                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Ah, gods, this month has just been one thing after another. You've probably
had months like that, too. Still, we try to keep up with ourselves. Although... if
exactly six die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish, and I find myself
wondering: Would that be bad? Ah, well. It hasn't happened so far.

Mirage "caught the eye of many," which is, of course, what mirages do. In this
case, she also gained the most points, forty, after defeating Hempen Jig. Prisoner
0484 lost the most points (34) after being defeated by a standby. That's bad.
Math op Owain got the most challenges, which isn't saying much; there were only
two challenges. Nobody was Most Avoided.
We had twenty-two fights, seven of them involving standbys. Not good, though
I've seen worse (in Darkholm, for instance). Two challenges, as I said.

FLY FISHER (21-6727) (22-3-1,75) of SEA DOGS fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-5) (0-0-
0,70) of the Imported Mimes. FLY FISHER was vanquished by MEAN SPIRIT in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided match. Since the standbys have agreed to provide a few
personals, I will comment on this one. If I can think of a comment. Ah... not right
this minute.
FAMINE (21-6826) (14-10-0,51) of DARK AT HEART fought SEA LEGS (9-5387) (23-20-
2,87) of SEA DOGS. FAMINE luckily beat SEA LEGS in a popular 6 minute gory match.
Famine may be dark at heart, but he/she/it is thin at waist. These days, people
figure that counts. Odd.
PRISONER BG23 (97-3369) (7-11-5,42) of DUNGEON CELL W10A fought LAKE SAILOR
(101-2) (0-0-0,30) of the Imported Mimes. PRISONER BG23 was vanquished by LAKE
SAILOR in a 1 minute mismatched fray. A second win for a standby! Will the Mimes
post a winning record this turn? If so, they'll be insufferable in the bars. But
they'll have earned it. So, let's see how the others fare--
     MIRAGE (84-10230) (13-10-1,31) of DRAGON'S GUARD V fought HEMPEN JIG (9-5388)
(26-20-1,89) of SEA DOGS. MIRAGE narrowly defeated HEMPEN JIG in an action packed 3
minute bout. Mirage clearly earned that sharp rise in the ranking.

     PRISONER R02 (82-51078) (21-34-1,40) of DUNGEON CELL 4 fought HERMY (101-4) (0-
0-0,50) of the Imported Mimes. PRISONER R02 was overpowered by HERMY in a 1 minute
uneven fight. A third win for a standby.
LAHRS ENNY (39-3400) (25-22-0,63) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT fought SURLY DECKHAND (21-
6568) (32-37-1,89) of SEA DOGS. LAHRS ENNY overpowered SURLY DECKHAND in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute mismatched fight. And what, I wonder, did Lahrs take besides the
win, eh?
CHATTY CABALIST (42-4488) (28-17-3,63) of DUNGEON CELL fought B&G BOUNCER (101-
3) (0-0-0,30) of the Imported Mimes. CHATTY CABALIST overpowered B&G BOUNCER in an
exciting 1 minute brutal one-sided bout. Ah, a loss! The standbys are now 3-1.
LAZY LOOKOUT (42-4504) (22-14-1,52) of DUNGEON CELL fought LAKE SAILOR (101-2)
(0-0-0,30) of the Imported Mimes. LAZY LOOKOUT was devastated by LAKE SAILOR in a 1
minute mismatched brawl. Well, that does it! Even with more fights to come, the
standbys are now assured of a winning turn. Four and one today.
SALTY (21-6607) (28-30-1,92) of SEA DOGS fought SHADOW BLADE (46-2972) (21-8-
6,83) of SERPENT'S HOLD. SALTY was devastated by SHADOW BLADE in an exciting 1
minute uneven duel. An interesting match, closer than you might guess. A lot of
skill displayed.

     PRISONER 0484 (82-49671) (18-37-1,100) of DUNGEON CELL 97 fought HERMY (101-4)
(0-0-0,50) of the Imported Mimes. PRISONER 0484 was handily defeated by HERMY in a 3
minute one-sided conflict. Five and one for the standbys, and you can see why this
Prisoner got such a sharp drop in the rankings.
JETSAM (1-8172) (31-34-1,149) of SEA DOGS fought ALARIC (28-3787) (23-11-0,103)
of THE WARLORDS II. JETSAM luckily beat ALARIC in a crowd pleasing 7 minute gory
match. When I was fighting, I never let them refer to my victories as "lucky."
Insulting, that. Mine were all due to skill.
GOB (51-5436) (21-14-1,123) of SEA DOGS fought OWAIN HARLSON (35-3130) (47-72-
1,135) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. GOB savagely defeated OWAIN HARLSON in a crowd pleasing
1 minute bloody competition. Ah, the Gob--beating up on children.
PRISONER BG11 (99-1620) (25-27-4,177) of DUNGEON CELL 508C fought THEATRE BUM
(101-6) (0-0-0,130) of the Imported Mimes. PRISONER BG11 handily defeated THEATRE
BUM in an exciting 1 minute one-sided bout. And the standbys end at five-two. Not a
bad turn for them.
SPARE ANCHOR (18-9610) (34-23-1,164) of SEA DOGS fought HUW AP HUW (35-3030)
(34-92-1,149) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. SPARE ANCHOR luckily beat HUW AP HUW in an
exciting 7 minute fight. What's the deal with the relatively long fights today?
Everybody moving slowly because of the heat? I could see that. It's been steamy.
When not stormy.

PRIZMATYK WAHL (73-4252) (29-17-2,165) of MAGIC MAYHEM fought CORRUPT TURNKEY
(42-4487) (27-8-3,175) of DUNGEON CELL. PRIZMATYK WAHL was vanquished by CORRUPT
TURNKEY in a 1 minute one-sided duel. Turned the key and opened the wahl. Whatever
works.
SMOKE (68-5868) (22-12-0,169) of ZOMBIE SQUAD II II fought GAR & BRILL (38-4252)
(77-134-1,136) of JUST BECAUSE. SMOKE narrowly defeated GAR & BRILL in an action
packed 3 minute gruesome melee. Practically necessary, if you consider how much
smoke the Gar and Brill generates on its own.
     PRISONER 0103 (82-33733) (56-69-0,190) of DUNGEON CELL 21 fought MARY ANN (47-
4378) (23-32-0,160) of SCREEN DREAMS. PRISONER 0103 bested MARY ANN in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute bloody match. Is it my imagination, or am I seeing a lot of
Prisoners on the sands these days? I know the Commission has offered the occasional
condemned criminal for a target dummy, but this is a whole different matter.
     PRISONER 0118 (82-33748) (42-70-0,207) of DUNGEON CELL 24 fought DIVING HAWK (3-
2665) (45-64-0,176) of WE BIG WOHPUM. PRISONER 0118 devastated DIVING HAWK in a
popular 1 minute uneven brawl. Mean Prisoners.
KEEL HAULER (9-5389) (28-5-0,193) of SEA DOGS fought NO CHASER (33-6490) (35-30-
0,154) of JOYS OF BOOZE. KEEL HAULER devastated NO CHASER in an exciting 1 minute
one-sided fight. Ah, well, we all know sailors can drink like the fish.

Our two challenges:
NACHTRAG (51-4310) (21-6-0,131) of RESURRECTION challenged TAVIS CADFALSON (35-
1419) (53-126-3,162) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. Up 31. NACHTRAG lost to TAVIS CADFALSON
in an action packed 2 minute Challenge battle. A bold move, Nachtrag, and I hope you
learned many good skills. Not that there are many BAD skills out there....
NIGHTBLADE (6-2008) (34-48-0,177) of THE DARK LORDS challenged MATH OP OWAIN
(35-1418) (67-112-1,198) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. Up 21. NIGHTBLADE slimly won victory
over MATH OP OWAIN in a 5 minute Challenge fight. Good going, Nightblade. Math may
have a poor record, but he's no pushover.

For the title:
     BUDDERCUP (60-5967) (48-48-0,202) of BUMS 'R' US fought CLEVER (50-2192) (49-24-
2,194) of RANDOM BLADES. BUDDERCUP was savagely defeated by CLEVER in an action
packed 2 minute Title fight. So much for Buddercup, who did not write a column or
even a couple of lines. Congratulations to Clever.

                                        Olaf

Math -- Thanks for the advice. I'll take that into consideration. By the way,
thanks for the skills those last two fights. -- Nightblade

Keel Hauler -- You get right to the point, don't you. -- Nightblade

Oh, gods, why did we agree to read and comment on the commentary in the spy report?
It's bad enough having to read the fights! -- Math, for the Children of Llyr

Diving Hawk -- Listen, I've been attacked by eagles and worse, a hawk is, well, not
small potatoes, but something I can handle. At least the first time. -- Math op
Owain

Olaf -- Do not speak slightingly of experience. The simple fact that I "have a lot
of it" means that I'm a survivor. That counts for more than just about anything
sometimes. -- Math

Prizmatyk Wahl -- My eyes hurt. And it's very hard to fight effectively when I have
to squint to get a glimpse of my opponent. Is this some kind of special treatment to
the armor that anyone can get (if they can pay for it)? -- Owain Harlson

Olaf -- I would never knit! Who cares about raveled sleeves of care and all that
stuff? I think I'll build ships in bottles. I've already made a start: I'm
emptying some bottles. -- Owain

Smoke -- Ma'am, it was an honor to meet you. It would be a greater honor to meet you
at a restaurant for dinner, however. -- Tavis Cadfalson

Olaf -- You insult the lady without knowing whereof you speak. She was pacing
herself. -- Tavis

Gar & Brill -- Take that, you fiendish instrument for furning bood! -- Huw ap Huw

Olaf -- I think I resemble that remark. -- Huw

Olaf -- We are taking the line that we are only required to comment on the comments
on our own fights, not on the rest of the spy report. Let the others carry some of
the load. -- Math, for the Children of Llyr
P.S. Or let the rest of the load drag in the dust, as the case may be.

I could always restrict my comments to fights in which you're involved. -- Olaf
P.S. But these were good responses. Thanks.

                        BLOODGAMES at the SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE

Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Summer FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:

DM 98: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and
DM 99: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds

Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:

BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)

DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker
before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited.
The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even
at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.

REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.

CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 98, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds.
For DM 99, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair
for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges.

TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by Wednesday, July 7, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at
the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament.

MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.

ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.

NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.

FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.

AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.

The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.

A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.

The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.

AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving
gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any
special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters
combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that
this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will
survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D.
That warrior could be yours!

The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
