starting Near Vithicar:
Tyre didn't curse as he trudged along under a heavy pack. Sidon didn't curse,
either. But Master Darque could tell they were both thinking about it. He didn't
owe them--or anyone else--an explanation. But they'd been with him a long time, were
loyal and reliable....
"We can't travel magically because of the disturbance the idiot in Kurukar is
creating," he said. "When we get down off the mountain, we might hire horses."
Tyre said, "Ah," and Sidon nodded and almost smiled. They resettled their packs
and kept walking.
And walking. It was a long way down off the mountain, which was one reason why
he'd picked that cave system to establish a laboratory in the first place. Close to
the nexus of power that was Vithicar, and a long way from anywhere else. Master
Darque had a lot of enemies, which was inconvenient but also a mark of his successes.
Practically a way of keeping score.
He dismissed that idle thought from his mind. What of the Black Kaliv of
Kurukar? He needed a plan. The first step would be to assemble all he knew about
the man, all he had picked up in bits and minute pieces over the years.
Brother to the First Wife of the Satrap of Zuwayza, given the rule of Kurukar at
his sister's insistence when the previous kaliv had become incapacitated. Some kind
of lingering debility on the previous man's part, and the possibility that it might
have been magically induced by his successor was... not something Darque had ever
heard suggested. But it might be so, and might be worth considering. Still, not
immediately critical. Except that a man who could and would use magic to open a path
to power for himself, behavior which seemed to Darque quite... normal, even
admirable, had chosen Kurukar. Why? The place was a backwater. A benighted
province with a poor climate and no great resources. Why had the Black Kaliv not
chosen Aljafir? Or Jurine? Or...?
Ah! A very old image emerged from the vaults of his memory. Centuries old, he
had been--briefly--studying the magical foundation of Alastari with some Fratsfan.
The man's name eluded him but probably didn't matter. What mattered was the map. It
had shown the lines of power that criss-crossed the isthmus of Alastari, and though
towns and borders, even rivers, had changed, the lines of power, what humans called
the "ley lines," would not have done so. Not to any degree that mattered, anyway.
And there had been a major node in the area that was now Kurukar.
So the Black Kaliv had made that choice for a sound reason. Good to know.
There might be a way to turn that knowledge into a weapon, which was something Master
Darque excelled at: turning knowledge into weapons.
Sorry no time for more, I've been sick. -- the Scribe
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Captain of the Guard
Home Guard, I am disappointed in you. I was perfectly willing to take a fall
for the right price. I even said so in my column when I first captured the throne.
But no, not a single taker. I can't tell if you are all too poor or too honest. In
either case, good riddance! I'm off to Talahya after this turn.
Corrupt Turnkey
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Welcome HOME GUARD. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with CHATTY
CABALIST? He actually beat MEAT YOUR MAKER's PORKY PIG, and walked away with 21 more
points from the fight. Major screwup at DUNGEON CELL. LAZY LOOKOUT lost 25 points
to LAKE SAILOR. Some new strategies, perhaps? Maybe LAZY LOOKOUT will provide more
easy wins... Try as he might, DIVING HAWK wasn't good enough at persuading CORRUPT
TURNKEY to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Advice to fighters with a 1
will--give up fighting!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... How well I know the
feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, ZOMBIE SQUAD
3! Management must be dealin', as the boys at USELESS TOOLS ain't reelin'! ZOMBIE
SQUAD 3's mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, GAR
& BRILL! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. Maybe ZOMBIE
SQUAD 3's DESPAIR is one of those guys who likes pain, or something. That's what
he'll get next week, after challenging up 47 to GAR & BRILL. GAR & BRILL must not
been fighting well, cause it lost to DESPAIR of ZOMBIE SQUAD 3. Sometimes you just
have a bad day where things get, um, mixed up. HOCKEY DUCK expects the easy win by
going 22 points down. OWAIN HARLSON will find this a hard lesson! Just who can
HOCKEY DUCK beat? I mean, the last matchup with lesser-ranked OWAIN HARLSON shoulda
been a piece of cake! Taunt your opponent STOWAWAY! That was my lucky charm when I
was unfairly challenged. (and by 33 points!) A.O. HELL should have an easy win.
A.O. HELL won victory over STOWAWAY. USELESS TOOLS calls this fighting? In my
day... SPARE ANCHOR didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he received from
RUBBER BULLET of USELESS TOOLS, who is 24 points below him. RUBBER BULLET perhaps
got his just desserts, seeing as he bested SPARE ANCHOR and ended up with 175
recognition points.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master
many skills, fight dirty.
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
HOME GUARD is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time
for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
There seems to be some delay in the office, and so, in the interests of making
sure this newsletter goes out in a timely manner (tomorrow being Veteran's Day
and a postal holiday--and we value our veterans here in Home Guard), I am
sending it with the golem spy report. Until next time. -- Olaf Modeen
Home Guard -- 7-3-5 in the Bloodgames, 0-19 in Home Guard. I would say that you all
should be proud, but it was mostly Lake Sailor and Mean Spirit. Perhaps I can finish
up at a perfect 0-20. I'm off to try my hand in Talahya, next, because whatever I'm
doing here isn't working. If I can't win in Talahya, either, do you think they'd let
me go back to the Bloodgames? -- Prisoner BG23
Probably not. The Commission doesn't figure it's operating to please the
gladiators.
Once again, I'm reducing my numbers in Home Guard so that I don't have to fight so
many stand-ins, but I will maintain a presence in this historic arena. I plan on
sticking around until they turn this place into a no-tourney ADM arena or a bowling
alley. I'll try to write more often, too, but I can't make any promises. -- One
Armed Bandit
Whatever you can do will be appreciated.
Despair -- Well! That certainly belies your name, at least from my point of view.
Thanks. -- Math op Owain
Spare Anchor -- When will you cease to weigh me down? -- Tavis Cadfalson
Diving Hawk -- I'm not a fish, dammit! Do I *look* like a damned fish? Stop diving
on me! -- Huw ap Huw
Sidewinder -- So, now that you're all wound up, what happens next? -- Owain Harlson

WINTER FACE-TO-FACE IN SUNNY ARIZONA!
Our next winter FTF will be held in Tempe, Arizona, January 14-16, 2011. It will be
held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tempe, Arizona (480-894-7444), the same hotel as
last year by popular request. Room rates are $129.00 per night, 1-2 occupancy, which
includes full cooked breakfast, complimentary manager's reception (yes, really!), free
airport shuttle, free parking and free high speed internet. There's a fitness center,
jacuzzi, and pool. The rooms are blocked--please make your reservation by December 22
before the block is released! (This is prime season for Phoenix, and people have been
unable to book rooms because they waited too long.) Look for the tournament info
sheet and minioverviews some time in December. We hope you're all looking forward to
it and that we will see you there!
