                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Captain of the Guard

One day, you are cast overboard in a storm. Another day, you sit on the throne
in Home Guard. Who would have thought such a thing was possible? No matter how much
the world has beaten you down, there is always hope for better things to come. Take
heart, Home Guard.

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

I was sitting there thinking how to start this spy report, which is hardly the
first one I've ever written, when I got this cold creeping feeling at the back of my
neck. You know the one I mean, the one that says, Look around, bub, you're missing
something. So I looked around. Same old office I've been using for years. Desk.
Chair. File cabinet. Coat tree with trench coat on it. Window with dusty blind.
Wastebasket. Cat.
Wait a minute, cat? Since when do I have a cat? I took a closer look.
Ordinary sort of cat. Gray and kind of stripey or mottled, the kind of color that
fades into any shadow. Low key. Not remarkable for size, either, probably if you
stretched him out, he'd measure maybe two feet from front paw to rear paw, right
before he raked you with claws like daggers. It was staring at the doorknob.
Perfectly normal doorknob, too. Round. Shiny. White, kind of china-like, with
flowers painted on it (hey, it was my gramma's doorknob, it's a memento). Takes
fingerprints well. Twitching a little, I could see the flowers moving back and
forth. Not much, but a little.
So the cat walks over and sits down under the doorknob, looking up. Then he
sits up on his haunches, like a squirrel or something, and looks at it, and he still
isn't more than halfway to the knob, which is three feet off the floor. And then he
stands up on his hind feet and stretches upward, and he almost reaches that doorknob,
two feet of cat reaching darn near three feet, which is unnatural. And he looks over
his shoulder at me and meows.
What am I, his doorman? So I upend the wastebasket over him and get back to
work. The cleaning ladies can let him out, unless they're too smart. He isn't MY
cat, after all.

Which doesn't give me a hand up on starting the spy report, so I might just as
well start at the beginning.
Greatest rise in recognition: Chatty Cabalist, 35 points.
Greatest drop, A.O. Hell, 28 points.
Most avoided, We Big Wohpum. By Royal Flush.
     Most challenged, Spare Anchor.
Last time, we had thirteen fights and five standbys. Today, we have nineteen
fights and only one standby. Great improvement! This is looking good. Five
challenges. It's almost like we have a real arena here! No, come to think of it,
and to look around a little, it IS like a real arena here. A good one, too, I don't
care what some people say.

DEAD LEE (8-3142) (12-3-0,79) of YOU PAY I SLAY fought MORBID CRUSADER (21-6825)
(20-9-1,68) of DARK AT HEART. DEAD LEE was overpowered by MORBID CRUSADER in a 1
minute one-sided duel. Somehow this sounds... appropriate. Like these two guys were
meant to meet.
     A.O. HELL (54-2523) (24-9-2,87) of USELESS TOOLS fought HERMY (101-4) (0-0-0,50)
of the Local Odds and Bods. A.O. HELL was handily defeated by HERMY in a popular 5
minute mismatched competition. The only standby on the sands today, and A.O. lost.
It's no wonder he dropped like the temperature at sunset.
     PRISONER R02 (82-51078) (29-40-1,47) of DUNGEON CELL 4 fought FAMINE (21-6826)
(15-12-0,66) of DARK AT HEART. PRISONER R02 overpowered FAMINE in a 2 minute gory
one-sided bout. How did the Prisoner do this? By eating the rats? Bleh. Not a
tasty visual.
     MIRAGE (84-10230) (22-15-1,74) of DRAGON'S GUARD V fought SURLY DECKHAND (21-
6568) (38-45-1,68) of SEA DOGS. MIRAGE devastated SURLY DECKHAND in an exciting 1
minute brutal one-sided brawl. This was probably because Surly couldn't see Mirage.
Well, not "couldn't see," but you know how it is with mirages. What you see is NOT
what you get.

     DOMINION (98-2058) (8-12-3,63) of ZOMBIE SQUAD 3 fought PRISONER 0484 (82-49671)
(23-46-1,52) of DUNGEON CELL 97. DOMINION slimly won victory over PRISONER 0484 in a
2 minute bloody bout. The scribes missed a good bet on this one, they should have
said the Zombie "slimly won dominion over" the Prisoner. That's what being named
Dominion is all about, isn't it?
HOCKEY DUCK (39-937) (35-29-1,114) of DUCKS UNLIMITED fought FLY FISHER (21-
6727) (30-9-1,94) of SEA DOGS. HOCKEY DUCK was vanquished by FLY FISHER in a 2
minute gruesome mismatched bout. Gruesome doesn't even begin to cover it. You'd
think a Duck would know better than to swallow a fisherman's fly, wouldn't you? But
maybe it's the hockey influence, hit on the head by a flying puck once too often.
BRICKHOUSE (29-4131) (44-21-0,157) of STREET WALKERS fought CHATTY CABALIST (42-
4488) (35-18-3,138) of DUNGEON CELL. BRICKHOUSE was devastated by CHATTY CABALIST in
a 2 minute mismatched bout. There are occasions when you just don't expect--or
welcome--a lot of talking, right Brickhouse?
GOLDIE (29-4805) (28-17-5,164) of STREET WALKERS fought NO CHASER (33-6490) (38-
41-0,147) of JOYS OF BOOZE. GOLDIE handily defeated NO CHASER in an exciting 1
minute one-sided contest. Easy one. If the Boozer wouldn't give chase, why, Goldie
just turned the tables and chased HIM.
MAD DOG MONTANA (29-4984) (31-28-6,152) of STREET WALKERS fought GAR & BRILL
(38-4252) (80-145-1,142) of JUST BECAUSE. MAD DOG MONTANA was overpowered by GAR &
BRILL in a 3 minute one-sided match. A classic loss, everyone has to lose to Gar
once. Which reminds me, welcome to Roadkill and the Street Walkers. We haven't seen
you here lately, and we're glad to.

IMMOVEABLE OBJECT (59-2110) (32-13-1,176) of NOT QUITE fought TAVIS CADFALSON
(35-1419) (59-134-3,169) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. IMMOVEABLE OBJECT defeated TAVIS
CADFALSON in an action packed 3 minute gory match. Ah, the pleasure of watching
someone ELSE beat his head against a stone wall, or whatever Immoveable might chance
to be. It feels so good to know it isn't me down there making an ass of myself.
DON KING (47-5374) (27-25-3,191) of ROYAL FLUSH fought SIDEWINDER (21-6883) (22-
1-1,154) of SERPENTS HOLD. DON KING vanquished SIDEWINDER in a 1 minute one-sided
duel. This Don knows his way around a serpent--come in from the top, not the side.
That's what musicians (snake charmers, every one) mean when they say, "Take it from
the top."
PERFECT TEN (47-4218) (34-28-1,182) of ROYAL FLUSH fought BUDDERCUP (60-5967)
(53-57-0,188) of BUMS 'R' US. PERFECT TEN was viciously subdued by BUDDERCUP in an
action packed 5 minute gory duel. Does this mean Buddercup is an eleven? Hard to
find good shoes in size eleven.
MATH OP OWAIN (35-1418) (73-120-1,200) of CHILDREN OF LLYR fought CATFISH HUNTER
(5-3315) (24-24-1,186) of PARTY ANIMALS. MATH OP OWAIN devastated CATFISH HUNTER in
a 2 minute one-sided competition. And to the Catfish guy, I say, "Look out! It's
fish-fry season!" Of course, it makes a difference if you're a catfish who hunts or
one who hunts for catfish. Or, I suppose, a cat hunting for fish. They do that
sometimes.
DIRTY SANCHEZ (29-4802) (29-17-0,185) of STREET WALKERS fought WAHOO (26-3916)
(25-18-1,181) of HERE TO PHOENIX. DIRTY SANCHEZ was devastated by WAHOO in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute one-sided duel. I dunno, I think the stewards shouldn't have let
Wahoo bring the bar of soap into the arena....

The challenges:
CAULIFLOWER EARS (52-3424) (28-21-0,100) of OTTO'S PARTS challenged OWAIN
HARLSON (35-3130) (51-82-1,133) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. Up 33. CAULIFLOWER EARS
overpowered OWAIN HARLSON in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. This is the kind
of thing that makes a gladiator feel good about himself. Well do I remember! So
long as you pick your opponents, you can boost your confidence out of all
recognition. Which is not to say that Cauliflower didn't do good with this win, but,
well, we know Owain here. And his record speaks volumes.
PORKY PIG (72-5953) (24-13-2,113) of MEAT YOUR MAKER challenged HUW AP HUW (35-
3030) (36-104-1,123) of CHILDREN OF LLYR. Up 10. PORKY PIG was vanquished by HUW AP
HUW in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Bit of a surprise, this. "Everyone"
seems to feel that Huw is a joke. But he's a tough joke.
RUBBER BULLET (54-2503) (26-5-1,167) of USELESS TOOLS challenged SPARE ANCHOR
(18-9610) (43-28-1,181) of SEA DOGS. Up 14. RUBBER BULLET was viciously subdued by
SPARE ANCHOR in a 3 minute Challenge match. This is the Most Challenged Spare
Anchor. Not someone you want to meet in a dark alley.
ROWDY YOBBO (20-3429) (33-39-1,194) of SPARF! challenged SMOKE (68-5868) (29-19-
0,200) of ZOMBIE SQUAD II II. Up 6. ROWDY YOBBO devastated SMOKE in a 2 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. I had to laugh at the end, where Rowdy was "blowing smoke out
his ears." Figure of speech, but what with him working up a sweat, and the day being
so cold, it looked like the real thing.

For the title:
PHONELESS CORD (54-2018) (36-21-0,216) of USELESS TOOLS challenged JETSAM (1-
8172) (44-35-1,260) of SEA DOGS. Up 44. PHONELESS CORD was bested by JETSAM in a 2
minute Challenge Title fight. A good try and a good win. Congratulations to the
Cord for nerve, and to Jetsam for skill. Be here next year, I'll be waiting!

To write SOMETHING, but not to go beating on a dead horse. However, I've gotten
one request in a different arena to continue, so I probably will--and push it to
a conclusion with determination and (I hope) dispatch. Then, maybe something
else; suggestions are welcomed. -- the Scribe

Buddercup -- The advantage of experience is made obvious. On a different note, have

Gar & Brill -- Ah, it's you. I've been meaning to ask, is there some compelling
reason why you don't wash that brill? It's filthy with cooked on grease and frankly
