Mission to the Twisted Lands
Episode Three
A mounted man has an advantage over opponents on foot, so Keel Woodhaven stuck his
boot into the stirrup and swung up onto Old Brown. He didn't glance at the people on
the Flying Pig, hoping they wouldn't feel they needed to help him. Unsheathing the
Dentless, he urged the horse forward, gazing sternly at the approaching half-dozen
denizens of Dustward. "You folks have some kind of problem?" he growled.
"You need to pay the docking fee," said a man who looked a little bit cleaner and
better dressed than his companions. His hand rested on a small crossbow that was
clipped to his belt.
"Oh, in blood?" Keel asked, looking as though he were quite ready, and it wouldn't be
his own blood. Old Brown drifted to a stop.
"In money," the man said irritably. "We townsfolk built this dock and it's for our
own use. Your horse just peed on it, too."
"Haven't got much cash," Keel lied, "but maybe I can pay in help. Have you been
having trouble with monsters showing up south of here?"
The two mutants in the group looked uneasy at this question. Since their shapes
appeared to be modifications of the human norm, they weren't too horrible to look at.
One had three eyes, and the other had a few extra fingers. From the shape of his
custom-made boots, he had extra toes as well. The spokesman said, "We're okay with...
monsters, if they behave themselves. In fact, we don't call them monsters."
Keel nodded. "Sure, but what about monsters that don't behave themselves? I suppose
you already know you've been exposed to leftover magic from the last magewar. But
there's something else in this region now. I heard a chaos gate has cracked open.
You guys been seeing things that never used to be human?"
The man drew a sharp breath. "Not seeing, exactly. Or those that do, don't come
back. Strange tracks have been found though. What are you offering? And who are
you?"
"Name's Woodhaven. I've been sent to close that Gate, and it sounds like that would
benefit you. Are we good? Can we all put our weapons away now?"
The spokesman glanced at his associates, and there was a general nod of assent. "I'm
Rock Darn. Why don't you come on up to the tavern and we'll talk about it?" One by
one they sheathed or uncocked their weapons.
Keel sheathed the Dentless over his shoulder, and dismounted. He glanced back at the
bargemen on the Flying Pig and waved them off. At a word from Captain Hand, crewmen
poled the boat away from the dock. Linda waved again, then walked away into the
canyons of cargo containers.
As a courtesy, he dismounted, leading Old Brown so he could more easily keep pace with
the pedestrians. He glanced around as they walked through the town... village,
really. Or hamlet. Or less. It appeared there were two streets, one that ran along
the shore and another one that went perpendicular to it, roughly following the course
of a river. The community was not uniformly dilapidated, nor were the inhabitants
destitute. Going through a hard time though, it looked like. And nervous. People
peeked out their doors at him, then seemed to relax a bit and some came out in the
open to watch him and Old Brown pass by. Keel understood their reaction. He didn't
look like a normal man, any more than some of them did. Parts of him were metal, even
his left eye. Not mechanical, just organic metal, a souvenir of his five centuries in
a Chaos Gate, when he'd had to patch his wounds with ore mined from the Gate. Usually
that made folks leery of him. In Dustward, it made him just a bit more trustworthy.
The tavern was on the perpendicular street that followed the river, which appeared to
turn into a road to somewhere. A sign hung in front of it with a picture of a bed, so
he guessed it was an inn as well.
Inside, Rock Darn sat down at the head of a long table, joined by the other five men
who'd been with him. Keel sat down next to the three-eyed guy. A well-built waitress
came over, took their drink orders, and said the dinner special was roast eggbeast and
potatos. Keel said he would like some. Privately he wondered what an eggbeast was,
but it sounded edible.
"So, you want to know about the disappearances," Rock Darn said after a swig of dark
beer. We've lost... let me think... nineteen people from Dustward and the surrounding
area. This has happened in the last five weeks. I'm not sure of the timing on some
of the incidents, but from what we can tell, it happens about every day and a half."
Keel paused with his mug halfway to his mouth. "Really. That's weird. I wonder if
it's ritualistic. Or if something needs to feed every thirty-six hours. Have you
noticed any pattern to the locations of the incidents? Something that might tell us
where the Gate is?"
The three-eyed man shook his head. "It even happened in town a few times, and
sometimes a day or two's ride away from here."
"Is there anybody you can send to for help? I mean like a government?"
There was a chorus of noes from the table. One of the men added, "Dustward isn't a
part of anything bigger. Nobody wants us, I think."
Keel had often thought governments were a pox on mankind, but he heard the keenness of
longing in that comment, and felt a response in his gut. He nodded his head and drank
some more beer. He thought to himself, Civilizations should look after their members,
at least where violent aggression from bad people is concerned. And these folks are
definitely members of civilization, even if they do have a few extra fingers. They
speak, they build, they do business. They shouldn't be ignored. Then he remembered
that Sheila had sent him to close the gate because she was a protector of the world,
or part of it. So he was an agent of civilization and he was here to help them. That
made him feel good though a bit weird. He was more in the habit of thinking of
himself as an agent of chaos. Heh! After all these centuries, maybe there was still
a bit of the paladin left in him.
He had to be a chaos paladin though. Lifting his mug, he offered a toast. "Here's to
civilization, and to chaos, in the best possible way. Flip off the queftlings, shout
down the minnipules, and just shake things all about!"
There were polite if indecipherable murmurs, and mugs were lifted. He thought that
toast might have gone over better on the Flying Pig than it did in Dustward. But then
he grinned when Rock Darn said loyally, "Yeah! Shake it all about!" and everyone
drained their drinks. A couple of guys looked hopefully at the waitress, who arrived
just then with a tray of bowls for them, but all she shook was her head.
Roast eggbeast, it turned out, tasted like curried chicken. As they dug in, Keel
said, "Does somebody know where I could get a map of this area?"
"At my shop," said the man with extra fingers. "I'm the claim recorder, Jock Eich.
I'll get you one after I eat."
After a moment, realizing the man was offering a map, Keel replied, "Thanks." He
swallowed a bite of fried potatos, which had delicious burnt crispy bits. "So,
there's mining in this area? What else goes on here?"
"Fishing, and this inn is a caravan stop," Rock Darn replied. "Soil's bad, there's no
farming except when somebody imports dirt and mixes it with manure."
"What about grazing animals? I'm wondering if my horse will be safe to eat grass
here."
"No," said the claim recorder. "We import oats and hay, and you'll have to buy some.
There is a refund for manure though."
"For you, horse feed is on the house," said one of the others, a bowlegged individual
with a weathered face. "I'm Tush Darn, by the way."
"Good to meet you, Mr. Darn."
"Thanks." Keel looked at the claim recorder. "If there's no government, how do you
stop claim jumpers?"
"Lynch mob."
"Ah, okay. What kind of things are mined here?"
"Ores you can't find anywhere else on Ghea," said the many-fingered man, with a look
of pride. "Magical stuff. It's dangerous to handle, but we can sell it for a lot of
money."
"It's probably from the wizard war," Keel said, nodding. "Has there been anything new
lately? Like, maybe from recent exposure to a leaking Chaos Gate?"
Jock Eich looked dubious. "Sorry. Claim locations are secret." He closed his mouth
in a tight line.
"Hey, I don't want to jump anybody's claim. I mean, even if I was a crook -- lynch
mob, hell no! But it might help me narrow down where I need to look for the Gate."
"That does make sense," Rock Darn said, with a meaningful look at the claim recorder.
With the expression of a man having teeth pulled, Jock Eich sighed and said, "I'll...
sketch out the general area on your map."
Rock Darn said, "I run the inn. You've got free room and board here, and stabling,
for as long as you need. Is there anything else you need from us today? I expect
you'll be starting out tomorrow?"
Keel said, "I'll just follow Mr. Eich on over to the claim office and get that map,
thanks. Nothing else today. Tomorrow, a guide might be nice."
The bed had fleas, or maybe lice. But Dustward at night was extremely quiet. It
seemed the region had very few birds or other wildlife. In the morning, he ate
eggbeast eggs and... he supposed... baconbeast bacon. And a young man with slit-
pupiled yellow eyes walked up to him while he was eating.
The young man smiled with pointy teeth. "Mr. Woodhaven, I'm Kot Buglar. I'll be your
guide."
"Glad to meet you," Keel said, idly scratching his chest, inwardly reflecting that the
predominant mutation in this community seemed to be a tin ear for naming babies.
Mentally he reviewed the map, which he had promised not to show to anyone. "I guess
we'll be starting to the southwest, near a place called Murder Canyon. I was told
there were tracks and other clues near there. Do you know that area? Got any advice
about it?"
Buglar nodded. "Normally, I'd advise anyone to stay away from there. But I guess
that's exactly why we should go, right?"
"Yup. You've got a horse, I guess?"
"A mule actually, but he's fast. Dustward mules are justly famous."
Keel noted the sword at Buglar's belt. "Are you a good fighter?"
Buglar shrugged. "Decent. You've got to be, around here. There are lots of hungry
things in the wild."
After breakfast, they set out down the road southward, and took a trail west that the
young guide indicated.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Good afternoon.
There were 109 fights today, no challenges, no avoids, but two deaths. How
unfortunate! Today I have been assisted by Alarond the Scribe, who informs me that
the taverns here have old wine and young serving girls. In my opinion, young girls
should not be serving alcohol.
The deaths:
YONDER ORPHAN (5-5387) (68-29-2,246) of IT'S ALL OVER NOW fought FEZZIK (45-814) (38-
32-1,198) of MAX'S MIRACLE. YONDER ORPHAN slaughtered FEZZIK in an action packed 1
minute mismatched bout. Yonder Orphan is Home Guard's highest ranked Basher, but in
my opinion, the stylemaster's title should not be awarded for killing someone.
STEADY DECLINE (84-47675) (18-8-1,166) of FEAR FACTORY 19 fought FAITH (47-8944) (35-
52-1,101) of SERPENTS HOLD II. STEADY DECLINE barely slew FAITH in a popular 1 minute
duel.
Since there is so little else to mention, I'll move on to the rest of the
stylemasters.
Our premier Aimed Blow practitioner is Gamma Cepei, who is also, of course, the
Captain of the Guard. GAMMA CEPHEI (61-3877) (56-35-0,338) of CEPHEUS fought RUTH
(18-10121) (110-64-0,317) of SHEPHERDS. GAMMA CEPHEI viciously subdued RUTH in a
crowd pleasing 4 minute gruesome Title fight. Ruth had been the most highly
recognized Parry-Riposte, but currently she is not.
The most highly ranked Lunger is Silver Seas, as was the case last turn. JURINE
CASSEROLE (42-4844) (27-20-1,250) of SHEWISH BUFFET fought SILVER SEAS (22-7127) (61-
39-1,302) of ARE YOU ?. JURINE CASSEROLE was demolished by SILVER SEAS in a popular 1
minute one-sided melee.
Blackguard is the best recognized Striker. ERIK (56-3399) (92-106-1,222) of MEN OF
STEEL fought BLACKGUARD (5-5543) (40-17-3,271) of DUNGEON CELL. ERIK was savagely
defeated by BLACKGUARD in an exciting 2 minute gruesome fight.
The highest ranked Total Parry, same as last turn, is Colosseum Halls. COLOSSEUM
HALLS (1-8871) (84-62-0,256) of RUN DMC fought TEDDY RUXPIN (11-6399) (74-56-1,196) of
LORDS OF CHAOS. COLOSSEUM HALLS viciously subdued TEDDY RUXPIN in a crowd pleasing 10
minute brawl. Mr. Ruxpin is the Parry-Strike of highest rank in Home Guard, having
won that award from Jurine Casserole.
Kurt Cobain is our top-ranked Slasher, as he was last turn. KURT COBAIN (46-4253)
(93-58-0,235) of THE 27 CLUB fought MUTANT BLOWBY (1-5520) (33-28-0,192) of GOD SQUAD.
KURT COBAIN handily defeated MUTANT BLOWBY in a 1 minute uneven melee.
The highest ranked Parry-Riposte is Tenth Watch. Are there ten watches on a ship?
They must be very short terms of duty, followed by a long rest. TENTH WATCH (18-
10705) (35-16-0,212) of SEA DOGS fought EARLY ONE MORNING (16-6010) (68-39-0,229) of
BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. TENTH WATCH devastated EARLY ONE MORNING in a crowd pleasing 6
minute mismatched bout.
Corea is the reigning Parry-Lunge, having wrested that honor from Eighth-Rate. COREA
(12-7086) (53-61-0,195) of BLUE NOTE fought ZETA AQUILAE (62-4867) (37-17-0,208) of
AQUILA. COREA overcame ZETA AQUILAE in a 2 minute duel.
And the top Wall of Steel is Dobbie. EXECUTIONER (5-5505) (36-28-1,213) of DUNGEON
CELL fought DOBBIE (84-30850) (69-72-2,200) of PEEP SHOW. EXECUTIONER was overcome by
DOBBIE in a 1 minute bout. Hmm. For a Wall of Steel, Dobbie produced a rather dull
fight, I think.
As usual, Job is the overall popularity leader. BICYCLE RACE (9-5609) (65-55-3,192)
of QUEEN fought JOB (18-6129) (73-188-0,208) of SHEPHERDS. BICYCLE RACE vanquished
JOB in a popular 1 minute mismatched fray.
This turn's favorite is T.G.I. Floyd's. ADEMA (61-3093) (39-50-0,110) of FEAR FACTORY
fought T.G.I. FLOYD'S (17-7346) (27-11-0,150) of ALL THINGS FLOYD. ADEMA was
viciously subdued by T.G.I. FLOYD'S in an exciting 7 minute gory brawl.
The least popular fighter is -10 Attack. HOFFA (18-8478) (61-201-1,67) of ARROGANCE
fought -10 ATTACK (21-7906) (24-79-0,57) of D.R.I.. HOFFA was outlasted by -10 ATTACK
in a unpopular 17 minute bout. I believe Mr. Attack must practice a defensive style.
I missed the fight. Someone invited me to taste a toasted lizard and I became ill.
Mr. Woodhaven sometimes mentioned the fights that happened at the end of the day.
I'll do that.
PSUNAMI FORCE (62-4920) (16-3-0,74) of STRIKER FORCE fought MEAN SPIRIT (101-5) (0-0-
0,70). PSUNAMI FORCE was overpowered by MEAN SPIRIT in a popular 1 minute one-sided
bout. I don't know whether Mean Spirit was the only stand-in to participate today,
but he was the only one I noticed.
BASHER FORCE (62-4872) (28-42-5,38) of STRIKER FORCE fought RAT-CATCHER (5-5714) (15-
17-0,46) of DUNGEON CELL. BASHER FORCE overpowered RAT-CATCHER in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided battle.
ROBERT FROST (45-5021) (17-12-2,57) of DEAD POETS fought BURDEN TOFU (38-5293) (18-15-
0,69) of TMM KNOCKOFFS. ROBERT FROST luckily beat BURDEN TOFU in a crowd pleasing 2
minute gruesome battle.
Those three fights were well enjoyed by the spectators, which apparently goes to show
that Home Guard is one of the more entertaining arenas.
