Mission to the Twisted Lands
Episode 9
The cabins that Captain Hand had caused to be built for them on the deck of the Flying
Pig were three in number, made of sturdy wooden frames with canvas sides and roofs.
One had a single hammock in it, which Orv claimed. The other cabins had two each.
Kinthel said, "So it's a ladies' cabin and a men's cabin? Anyway it's good the horses
have big stalls, and we can walk them around the barge so they don't stiffen up. Lady
Greywand really gave us some good horses."
They put their things in their cabin. After the Pig departed from Bonsur harbor,
Kinthel suggested they walk their horses around the deck of the barge. It was a
pretty large craft, maybe the size of a city block. Vlada took note of places she
would have to clean up later, if she couldn't get somebody else to do it. She
remembered that the Rocani woman had been a caravan raider, which was probably why she
was so interested in horses. She might be willing to do shovel patrol. "Are horses
very smart?"
Kinthel tipped her head. "About as smart as dogs, maybe, but it's hard to tell
because they're not so interested in doing what humans want them to do. But if you
can make friends with your horse, it's pretty cool. They do friendship well."
"What about the winged horses over in Darkholm?"
"I don't know. Why do you ask?"
Vlada tipped her head toward something in the northern sky. "Those are winged horses,
aren't they?"
There were five of the creatures, flying in a V formation like a flock of geese, dark
winged dots against the ominous clouds. Galloping dots, she realized as the formation
came closer. And how silly was that?
As the winged horses came nearer, Kinthel said, "I don't see any riders, do you?"
"And they're all different colors," Vlada said. "The ones in the Delarquan Air Corps
are always black, aren't they?"
"These must be wild ones."
Vlada wondered how winged horses could really be a successful species. They were
basically heavy-bodied, non-aerodynamic, six-limbed birds. Those wings were really
big, but still... they had to be magical in order to lift the weight of a horse. And
why were they diving at the Flying Pig? She drew her sword.
Kinthel said, "Uh... there are five of them, and five of us. You don't suppose Lady
Greywand sent them for us to ride?"
"She already gave us horses. And a barge for them to ride in."
Kinthel bit her lip. "Hey, I just remembered hearing once that winged horses are
carnivores. Because the energy required for them to fly requires a meat diet."
"Hedgehog, I mean Kinthel, didn't you say you're good with a bow?"
"Yeah! I'll go get it!" The Rocani woman vaulted neatly onto her bay mare and
galloped for the stalls.
Vlada rode to get her bow as well, wishing she'd practiced with it more.
The bargemen were reacting, too, running for weapons. Belatedly, the lookout on top
of the pilot house called a warning, but then, he'd probably been watching the horizon
for sails, not the sky for wings.
A woman ran up to stand with the gladiators, along with Orv and Kot. She was a
muscular and tattooed, with an eye patch and a mostly shaven head except for a crest
of six-inch-long raven-black hair that curved around her head from front to back. She
held two curving, barbed daggers. "They'll be after your horses," she said. "They
eat horses, cattle, pigs... sometimes humans. We get trouble from those things
sometimes, when we're hauling livestock."
Kinthel came out of their cabin with bows and quivers for herself and Vlada. Fealost
and Kot were closing and barring the stalls with the horses in them. Luckily, the
stalls were solid wood, not canvas over a wooden frame.
Fealost asked the crew woman, "What's the best way to fight those things?"
"Poke them in the belly. That spear of yours should do all right. First time we
fought winged horses, I tried to hamstring one, but that didn't do much because it was
flying."
"I hate the idea of hurting horses," Kinthel said in a low voice.
The woman shrugged. "Hate it if you want, but if you can't do it, you should hide."
Kinthel stood her ground, feet braced, bow ready, her chin thrust out. Vlada thought
the one-eyed woman was being too hard on the Rocani gladiator.
The two women released their arrows. A few crossbow bolts came from some of the
crewmen. A horse neighed in pain or anger.
And then the winged horses were almost upon them, legs thrust out stiffly, preparing
to descend and trample them. Vlada shot another arrow. Since she was standing in the
center of the defending line, she shot at the palomino stallion that was coming at
her. Then she tossed the bow to the deck and drew her sword. The winged horse lashed
at her sword arm with a front hoof, striking the flat of the blade with great force
and knocking it out of her hand. With a cry of frustration and rage, Vlada dove to
the side, rolling, to retrieve her sword. The horse landed on the deck, pivoted and
came at her with its fangs bared. This time, she gripped the sword tightly in both
hands. Since the horse was not attacking with the force of gravity behind it, she
managed to hold onto her weapon and cut its neck -- just a shallow wound, slicing a
flap of skin, but it started bleeding. The stallion didn't react. She kept her sword
pretty sharp; he might not even feel it yet. His head snaked out and his teeth
snapped on her right wrist before she could move back to guard position.
"Ow!" Those sharp teeth sank through skin and muscle. She felt something else give,
maybe a tendon. The hand felt much weaker; she shifted her grip on the sword, and
thrust forward, aiming for the beast's neck but it moved and the blade slid into his
shoulder.
She glided back, focused on the fight, not the pain. Against so massive a foe, she
was afraid she'd only inflicted a couple of flesh wounds so far.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Fealost, who was fighting a sorrel stallion.
Ducking past its bite, he stabbed it in the belly. The winged horse screamed.
Kinthel was matched against a smallish brown and white paint horse, long-legged and
slim. She whacked it on the ribs with her quarterstaff, dodged a lashing hoof, and
then hit it on the head. There was a loud "BONK" sound and the black and white horse
dropped limply to the deck.
Kot and the one-eyed woman were each fighting a horse, both using daggers, which were
not good weapons against animals with such a long reach. Orv held the big emerald
earthstone cupped in its hands, and seemed to be concentrating.
Then Vlada had to focus on her own fight, desperately dodging a rearing beat-down from
the palomino's front hooves. One hoof caught her on the thigh, which hurt a lot
although she didn't think the bone was broken. It did slow her, though. Sensing an
advantage, the palomino stallion went for her throat with its teeth, its long bloody
neck snaking out. Since it was too close in for her to bring her long blade to bear,
she hit it on the nose with the hilt of her backup dagger. The stallion curved its
head back, lips curling as though it wanted to sneeze. Then suddenly its wings swept
forward with a sound like thunder, smashing her between them. They were very powerful
wings, possibly magical, and when they released her she staggered: deafened, stunned,
and bruised.
Orv shouted something that she couldn't exactly hear. Then the deck tilted. Still
disoriented, Vlada fell, although she sprang to her feet again quickly. The deck had
sprouted... arms? She saw that the palomino was caught on three of its four legs by
branches growing out of the wooden surface. It neighed and struggled, but she pointed
her sword and lunged at its throat, ending its life.
The others were overcoming their opponents as well. Kinthel and Kot beat and stabbed
a dappled gray, while the one-eyed woman neatly slit a roan's throat. Fealost's
opponent had been disemboweled; he put it out of its misery with a slash of its
throat.
All of the winged horses had crossbow bolts sticking out of them.
Wiping sweat from her face, Vlada went to finish off the black and white paint which
was bound with wooden arms as well, but Kinthel stepped in front of her. "No. That
one's young, just a colt really. This was a bachelor band."
"A what?"
"Usually one stallion will claim all the mares and drive out the other males, so wild
horses have bachelor bands." She flicked a hand at the paint. "That one's really
young. Maybe he can be tamed."
"We don't have time to do that! We're on a mission!"
"I won't let you kill him."
Vlada sighed. The paint colt was regaining consciousness, struggling although it
could really only twitch, and it did look very young and very frightened. Suddenly
she wanted to save it, too. "Okay with me. If Captain Hand will allow it."
Kot said, "We could leave it in Dustward while we finish our mission."
The crew of the barge had started gathering around. "Looks like horsemeat for
dinner," said one.
Kinthel bared her teeth. "No way! Don't you have enough food for this trip?"
Then Captain Hand was there. "I see you all stood back and let our passengers fight,"
he said.
"Why not?" asked one man. "Those are professional fighters."
"Not all of us," Kot said. "We were glad to defend the boat, but I think we should
get to say what will be done with the winged horses. I say throw the dead ones
overboard and let the ladies try to tame the other one."
"I agree," said Orv. Fealost just shrugged.
The Captain nodded. "It's decided, then." He pointed at four of the largest crewmen.
"You four, help drag the corpses to the rail. Magda..." He looked around, and nodded
at an older woman who was standing with the crew. "Treat their wounds, please."
After they were all bandaged, they had dinner: fish and potatoes, not horse. They
put Kot's mule with Orv's small mare, and lodged the winged colt in the stall that had
been vacated. The paint colt was extremely wild. It wouldn't touch the oats they
offered it, and broke the bowl of fish stew that they put in the stall. Later,
however, Vlada saw that it had eaten some of the fish. And so, they traveled on to
Dustward with an additional passenger.

There were 118 fights today, 23 challenges, several avoids, and no deaths. So it was
a much better turn than last time. The overall popularity leader (Job) and the least
popular fighter (Teckla King) were the same as last turn.

0,179) of SHEPHERDS. AIR RAID was overcome by JOB in a crowd pleasing 5 minute bout.
BLOCK (26-5168) (33-35-1,157) of FIST fought TECKLA KING (35-786) (35-29-1,123) of
HOUSE JHEREG. BLOCK was savagely defeated by TECKLA KING in a dull 27 minute brutal
match. Nearly half an hour! It was exhausting to watch, and surely exhausting to
participate in.
This turn's favorite fighter is Picaroon. PICAROON (28-5202) (43-26-1,191) of SEA
DOGS fought THE GNOME (84-26786) (57-32-0,195) of PIPER AT THE GATES. PICAROON was
savagely defeated by THE GNOME in a crowd pleasing 8 minute gory contest. Picaroon is
also our best recognized Parry-Lunge. The Gnome is top Total Parry.
The first non-challenge fight was our Title match. KURT COBAIN (46-4253) (101-58-
0,338) of THE 27 CLUB fought IOTA DRACONIS (56-4546) (42-37-0,215) of DRACO. KURT
COBAIN overpowered IOTA DRACONIS in an exciting 1 minute uneven Title match. And so,
Mr. Cobain is still our Captain of the Guard and most highly ranked Slasher.
Tamba is our top Lunger. TAMBA (97-6138) (40-29-4,252) of CHIEFS 16.1 fought SUICIDE
KING (35-3104) (36-42-1,200) of ONE MAN GANG. TAMBA devastated SUICIDE KING in an
action packed 1 minute bloody mismatched match.
The leading Aimed Blow this turn is Privateer. PRIVATEER (28-5247) (51-33-0,242) of
SEA DOGS fought POSTMORTEM (82-7091) (35-71-0,211) of FEAR FACTORY. PRIVATEER
overpowered POSTMORTEM in a crowd pleasing 3 minute brutal one-sided duel.
Our premier Wall of Steel is Janis Joblin. JANIS JOBLIN (46-4380) (81-35-3,247) of
THE 27 CLUB fought BOZO (42-4016) (67-88-0,190) of CLOWNING AROUND. JANIS JOBLIN
savagely defeated BOZO in an action packed 3 minute brutal competition.
THE HITMAN (30-4550) (26-11-0,230) of WRESTLMANIACS challenged DRES (18-10562) (45-28-
1,231) of HIP HOP HEROES. THE HITMAN devastated DRES in a 1 minute mismatched
Challenge fight. The Hitman is top Striker.
CHUCKY (22-7121) (41-36-1,213) of THE MENTORS GORE fought ERIK (56-3399) (95-111-
1,202) of MEN OF STEEL. CHUCKY was viciously subdued by ERIK in an exciting 3 minute
brutal conflict. The victorious Erik is our finest Basher.
CHICKEN A LA KING (47-7583) (27-21-2,198) of ROYAL FLUSH challenged UNZASTER DIZASTER
(43-1011) (27-20-1,200) of COLLEGE RADIO. CHICKEN A LA KING was vanquished by
UNZASTER DIZASTER in a 1 minute Challenge battle. Mr. Dizaster is our most highly
rated Parry-Riposte.
WHOOPIE DOO (24-5196) (45-39-4,204) of TRIBE fought CHAINSAW JUGGLER (82-56761) (26-
20-0,175) of CARNIVAL OF CHAOS. WHOOPIE DOO demolished CHAINSAW JUGGLER in a popular
1 minute one-sided battle. The Juggler is top Parry-Strike.
Avid Fans avoided Shewish Picnic. Well done, sirs.
