Korga and vicinity:
Aghtamar pushed back her bowl with a sigh of satisfaction. She'd probably eaten
better venison stew, but she couldn't remember when. "So tell us about the new
danger on the road here," she invited.
Cadal drained his tankard of ale and folded his arms on the table. "We don't
know what it is," he said, "but there have been more than a dozen travelers' deaths
between here and Mirkon [the next town east of Korga] that can't be accounted for by
any of the usual hazards. All but one instance were lone travelers, all were moving
after dark. A courier, a couple of traders, the rest we're not sure about. Two
female, the rest male. Karnhorns, mostly, but three Harkenes, a couple westerners,
Convincian, maybe. All armed, four mounted and the others on foot."
"A mixed lot," Fist of Kjarran said, nodding. "Nothing to link them together--"
"Except the way they died. The doctor here that examined some of the bodies
called it 'heart failure'." Cadal grimaced. "Those of us that have been patrolling
the road and found the bodies call it 'dead of fear'. The looks on their faces...."
He shook his head slightly. "Whatever they met terrified them. All but the oldest
two had run long and hard before they dropped. We figure the oldest ones simply died
on the spot where they met...whatever it was."
"Not a lot to go on, if you're thinking we can help you hunt this killer," Zilla
said critically. "I suppose there aren't any tracks?"
"Nothing we can be sure of," Cadal admitted. "My idea is to bait them--send a
likely traveler along the road after dark and follow, hoping to come on something."
"Damned big risk you're asking your decoy to take," Aghtamar pointed out.
"Yes, that's why I only want Lord Protectors on this."
"I can do this," Fist of Kjarran said briskly. "For the glory of the Empire and
in the service of Kjarran and His Daughter Jayde, I will serve as bait to lure out
this killer who preys on innocent travelers!"
Zukal and vicinity:
It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it
might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical,
shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning
eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and
Harlund drag him into the rowboat.
"He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back
toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's
nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?"
"Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen
something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw."
"He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There
aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around
uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset
faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with,"
the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...."
"Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said
firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road
and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something
terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason."
Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it
again. Smart move.
"Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't
your problem."
Malcorn:
Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, sat in his study and stared into the fire. He
was alone, and it was very late. A bottle of wine and a goblet sat on the table at
his elbow, but he didn't reach for them. Getting drunk might make him forget his
problems for the night, but in the morning, the problems would still be there, and
he'd have Shew-sized hangover to go with them. Better to pass on the wine.
Had he done the right thing in releasing the Dregur from the Silent Place? Yes.
Or at least, releasing them wasn't a wrong thing. Caging them because the Karnhorns
didn't know how to live with them and hadn't the power to kill them had been a wrong
thing. Blackie believed with his whole heart that death was better than a cage. And
he had known the risks he was taking--the risks he was subjecting everyone in the
area to--when he released the Dregur. Some innocent people would die of encounters
with the Dregur...as innocent people were dying every day at the hands of the
invaders.
Blackie's eyes went to the wine bottle. That was what haunted him, the innocent
people. Hell, even some of the invaders were innocent in all the ways that counted,
drafted from their Eastern homes at the command of some powerful lord and sent to
Alastari to fight and die. Telling himself that fewer innocents would die this way
was cold comfort.

The Isle of the Eye, Talahya:
It didn't take them long to bring Carris Fallstar up to date on what they had
deduced; the elf had managed to guess a lot of it on his own. When Fizban started
adding speculations and guesses, Carris held up a hand to stop him. "Save the
guessing till you've got more facts, old man," he suggested. "The important thing
now is action--"
"Such as?" Scarlatti demanded truculently.
"We need to reconnect the Isle to Alastari," Carris said calmly, "or to some
other world that can supply us with the food needed to support the population."
"And you think we can do this?" Rogan's skepticism was obvious. "It's true
that Fizban's a wizard, but--"
"But not knowledgeable or powerful enough to accomplish that," the old man
agreed. "I learned my art in another place, and even there where the pattern was as
familiar to me as the shape of my hand, I might not have been able to..." he
shrugged, "to do whatever it would take to forge such links. It's my thought that
the Lady Greywand may be the only one with the knowledge we need and the control."
Scarlatti blew out his breath in something a little more than a sigh. "Yeah,
that's what I've been figuring right along. And I'm assuming that she knows what's
happening and is doing whatever she wants to and can do about the situation, and
we're still in trouble here. So...." He shrugged.
"So we need to come up with something ourselves," Rogan said coolly. He seemed
to sense the doubt in his companions and turned his blind face from one to another.
"Why not, after all? We are none of us stupid, unimaginative, or lacking in
potentially useful skills. Therefore let us use them."
"Good points," Moonjumper murmured. "Because of my nature, I can sense the
presence of Gates... at least active ones. And I can also sense the linkage with
Alastari, when it is operating. What other skills may be part of my design I do not
know. I have never had an opportunity to speak with my designer," the golem said,
"nor do I know the designer's identity or purpose."
Scarlatti nodded. "That's about what I figured. I, uh, have some skills in
gathering information...."
"A spy?" Rogan asked.
"I prefer to think of myself as an observer," the Lapurian answered with
dignity. "I also have some knowledge of the political chessboard that is eastern
Alastari, though I admit I don't see how that can be useful."
"Very well, a trained observer," Rogan said. "That may be quite useful in
itself. I am, as you see, Aruaki, and I can shapeshift at need. Also, my senses
other than sight are much sharper than is normal." He paused for a moment, then went
on more slowly, "I suspect that I may extend the range of my other senses beyond even
that of most who are born blind... or perhaps I have some other sense that I cannot
give a name to. But I become... aware of things, sometimes."
"Interesting," Fizban said. "Perhaps we could set up some experiments to
determine the full range of you-- Oh, all right," he shrugged at Scarlatti's frown,
"some other time. My skills that might be useful are simple: I am a wizard. Not
the greatest, perhaps, but not the least, either. And I have a lot of information
picked up in odd, sometimes VERY odd, places." He looked at the last member of the
group, Carris, expectantly.
The elf shrugged. "I have a lot of skills, you could say I collect them! I
know a little of sorcery, and more of surviving in strange corners of the universes.
We probably all have abilities that we don't yet realize will be valuable. No way to
list them till we know what we're going to DO with them. So...?"
"Two angles of attack on the problem occur to me," Fizban said after a moment.
"We can find where the magical links USED to be anchored and look for significant
facts about the anchors, how they worked and why they aren't now. And we can find
Gates that are working now and study THEM to find out the how and why."
"And from those two sets of facts," Carris agreed, "we should be able to draw
conclusions and form plans of action. Sounds good to me. Let's get started."

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Zontani Sharp Eyes haled you as he went past. He says, "Hi." And other stuff,
but you don't need to hear all that other stuff, do you? I mean, there is LOTS of
stuff today if we just talk about fighting, and why not talk about other stuff too?
For one thing, Zontani said the city is going to perish if six people die in
duels this week. Well, let's see, one died in Talahya, and one in Andorak, but
nobody in Primus. We can't count Lirin Kiv because of it being in totally a
different town, and of course not Gateway either. And nobody died HERE, so unless
exactly four... no, wait, Darkholm isn't here, either, it's down in, you know, Willow
Beach. So we're saved. Unless somebody's holding duels not in the arena, but they
wouldn't do THAT, would they? And would it even COUNT?
So, anyway, here's some other stuff about the fights today, of which there were
sixty-three, which is totally amazing. And only two standbys, and nobody died, and
nineteen challenges matches, and lots of personals, and it's just, you know, totally
tubular. Drake's Bar-B-Q avoided Silmarilliad, probably because they couldn't, like,
spell it, you know? And Superior Forces, not the team, but the guy from Duplicate
Reduncancy, I think, unless I'm wrong, he got the most challenges, though why anybody
would WANT them, *I* don't know. I mean, I just report stuff. And besides, it's too
hot to think.
Before I list the fights, with maybe just a LITTLE comment here and, you know,
there, I want to ask you this. Have you honed any years yet? And if you HAVE, what
do you do with them? I mean, so? Some years have sharp points and some don't. Big
deal, right?
AGRO (29-4314) (20-21-1,59) of CROC FILES fought DARK VANITY (15-4338) (21-9-
2,77) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. AGRO was narrowly defeated by DARK VANITY in a 2 minute
gory fight. So, Agro, what about Dark Vanity's crockodile handbag? And the shoes?
I mean, I like the gold buckles, but still.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (21-17-0,47) of CROC FILES fought BRANGUS (16-4162) (21-27-
1,51) of PUNNY AMINALS. GRAHAM overpowered BRANGUS in a 1 minute one-sided match. I
can't talk about all these fights, you know, because of there being so many. Which
is good, if you like fighting, and I guess, well, it IS what SHE wants me to talk
about, so....
SAMPSA (31-4233) (17-0-2,53) of SOL INVICTUS fought POINTY (16-4427) (27-21-
0,56) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS.... SAMPSA was devastated by POINTY in a crowd pleasing 5
minute brutal uneven match. Wow, Pointy must really hone his ears. Um, I mean his
years. Or something.
HERMES (58-6016) (13-4-0,86) of MYTHICAL fought PSYCHOSIS (9-4650) (11-1-1,35)
of DSM4. HERMES defeated PSYCHOSIS in a 2 minute fight.
LAYTOOS (60-5693) (26-18-0,89) of SHAVE MY POODLE fought ROCKI ROADS (25-4365)
(24-25-0,69) of IVERS GIRLS. LAYTOOS demolished ROCKI ROADS in a 1 minute uneven
battle. These are both Andorians! What are they doing here? I mean, fine, it's
totally albendranious to have them liking us best, but, you know, why?
HAYSEED X-IV (82-6120) (12-6-1,69) of PROJECT HAYSEED fought SAMOO (37-4630)
(14-10-1,53) of DARKENED PRIDE. HAYSEED X-IV was overpowered by SAMOO in an exciting
1 minute uneven melee. This was too fast for really exciting. We need more TWO
minute fights.
JOELEAN (97-903) (9-7-4,36) of IVER'S GIRLS fought THE MADNESS (21-5214) (20-8-
1,63) of BLACKEST PRIDE. JOELEAN was overpowered by THE MADNESS in a 1 minute one-
sided fight. This is, like, totally expected. But, you know, insane anyway. Or
really upset.
SWEET CHASTITY (35-504) (29-23-1,100) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE fought LUCIFREYJA
(103-40) (19-21-1,90) of Eager Fans. SWEET CHASTITY viciously subdued LUCIFREYJA in
an action packed 3 minute match. And next time, Lucifreyja won't be so eager, and
then where will you be, Sweet? I mean, okay, you wanted to win, but did you have to
be VICIOUS?
SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (16-2-0,97) of CASTLE BLACK fought NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-
5821) (15-9-0,54) of BLADES OF WONDER. SETHRA LAVODE devastated NEBUCHADNEZZAR in a
1 minute one-sided fight. This is good, because of Nebuchsomething being so hard to
spell. Can I call you Neb? Will you write personals?
VENRIC (60-5709) (16-16-0,97) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 fought YAMA (82-11638)
(11-7-0,40) of DEATH HORDE VI. VENRIC demolished YAMA in a 3 minute one-sided
conflict.
LIMA BEAN FLAMBE (70-3118) (25-16-0,113) of HEAVE HO! fought FODDERER (36-5602)
(21-18-0,95) of ANARKYSTS. LIMA BEAN FLAMBE won victory over FODDERER in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute match. I don't like lima beans. Just in case you wanted to know.
Nasty things.
DESECRATION (21-4392) (21-11-2,124) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought LORD LIGHTSPEED
(33-2928) (26-22-3,119) of LUROCIANS II. DESECRATION was beaten by LORD LIGHTSPEED
in a popular 3 minute match.
CLOD PUNTER (66-3309) (30-34-3,164) of MAROON MIDGET fought TOUCH MY MONK, EH?
(12-5112) (25-19-0,142) of ESTIMATED PROPHETS. CLOD PUNTER was overcome by TOUCH MY
MONK, EH? in a 2 minute contest.
AHRINGOL (33-5726) (19-11-0,162) of DEATH HORDE fought FRAIL WHALE (55-1968)
(96-146-3,130) of RHYME TYME. AHRINGOL vanquished FRAIL WHALE in a popular 1 minute
bloody one-sided struggle. This is Ahringol tW, which you can tell because Frail
didn't die, which if it had been Ahringol tG, he would have, probably. Ahringol is
like that.
D (82-44) (19-9-0,168) of EASTERN HORDE 4 fought SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (25-19-
0,120) of SHADOWCIRCLE. D demolished SHEA MAGEBORN in a popular 2 minute gory
mismatched contest. What kind of name is D? There isn't even enough to get a, like,
grip on, much less a tan.
NIGHTIE KNIGHT (12-4731) (37-22-1,177) of LOBOTOMATION fought MADBULL (13-4198)
(46-73-1,152) of CARDOW HUNTERS. NIGHTIE KNIGHT viciously subdued MADBULL in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute brutal fight. I laughed, you know, but I don't think Madbull heard
me. But it was because of the pink negli-gee that Nightie had. And the feathers.
KELOS (55-30) (50-71-3,162) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought CATATONIC (9-4649) (27-14-
0,140) of DSM4. KELOS savagely defeated CATATONIC in an exciting 2 minute brutal
struggle. I don't believe this. I mean, okay, Kelos won if you say so, but how
could it be exciting? Because it says right here in my notes that Catatonic means
sleeping a lot or something like that, and sleeping isn't exciting.
HOUSE MOUSE (55-221) (103-165-2,179) of RHYME TYME fought RUNEQUEST (49-2862)
(58-89-3,177) of RPG'S. HOUSE MOUSE overpowered RUNEQUEST in a crowd pleasing 1
minute bloody mismatched bout.
FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (78-111-1,180) of RHYME TYME fought ANTHRAXUS (33-5723)
(23-15-1,157) of DEATH HORDE. FUNNY BUNNY was viciously subdued by ANTHRAXUS in an
exciting 3 minute brutal bout. Pooh.
MOONRACER (50-3206) (32-23-1,202) of MISFIT TOYS fought STEEL CLOTH (56-1745)
(89-101-3,204) of PITT GLADIATORS. MOONRACER was handily defeated by STEEL CLOTH in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided duel.
TRYURLUCK (61-1029) (43-34-1,188) of BLOOD KNIGHTS fought RILLION (36-5545) (26-
11-1,158) of THE CHADS. TRYURLUCK overpowered RILLION in a popular 1 minute uneven
bout. This is Rillion tW, and I expected, you know, better of him. So what
happened? Don't tell me you bought a lottery ticket! That would be totally
bankruptical.
JULIUS (64-3641) (63-67-2,184) of UNDER DURESS fought INCISOR (64-3639) (53-69-
4,178) of MASTICATORS. JULIUS overpowered INCISOR in an action packed 1 minute one-
sided battle.
RISK TAKER (43-3388) (41-35-1,181) of GIGABLOOD fought BLINDFOLD SKIING (55-
2408) (55-78-2,181) of BAD IDEA. RISK TAKER handily defeated BLINDFOLD SKIING in a 1
minute one-sided conflict. This was a summerical match, somehow, with the risks and,
you know, bad ideas. Like going to the beach without an umbrella.
XERXES (67-2429) (36-31-2,191) of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE fought HATHU (103-32) (5-
1-0,250) of Eager Fans. XERXES defeated HATHU in an exciting 2 minute bloody brawl.
Hathu is, like, totally mogrified and not happy at all.
MALICE (15-3729) (32-23-0,193) of MISCELLANEA fought TRAVELLER (49-2866) (66-67-
2,183) of RPG'S. MALICE demolished TRAVELLER in a crowd pleasing 1 minute uneven
conflict.
CHAOS LICH (15-4132) (35-20-0,190) of GRAVEYARD GLORY fought KOOSH BALL (71-
3536) (31-20-0,183) of STUFF I BROUGHT. CHAOS LICH lost to KOOSH BALL in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute duel. It's because of not having a lite touch. I bet Chaos Lich
doesn't even play with frisbees.
AZREAL ELS III (4-4482) (22-14-2,181) of EASTERN HORDE fought SNAP CRACKLE PUP
(49-738) (35-30-1,188) of PETS ON FIRE. AZREAL ELS III vanquished SNAP CRACKLE PUP
in an exciting 1 minute one-sided match. Did you notice how all the sandrakers had
fire extinguishers this time? I don't know where they got that many, and I asked,
and it was soda bottles! Which means no fizzy drinks tonight.
NIRFAUNA (16-4214) (28-43-3,191) of HELPLESS ANIMALS fought BLADE RUNNER # (33-
4544) (76-56-4,201) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. NIRFAUNA was overpowered by BLADE
RUNNER # in a 1 minute one-sided competition. But not killed, either one, so this is
good. Because if they'd both been killed we'd be closer to having the city
destroyed, or perished, or whatever, and I don't want that to happen. At least, not
right now.
TITAN (21-5070) (32-17-1,189) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought DR. SCUM (15-1968) (41-
44-2,204) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. TITAN was beaten by DR. SCUM in a 2 minute duel. Did
you know who Dr. Scum really is? I looked it up. It's a not-so-soft drink with, you
know, hard water and fizz, but it doesn't bubble, it just floats there and looks
tired.
DARK OMEGA (21-4983) (37-34-0,190) of LORDS OF SHADOWS fought MELKOR (13-1821)
(30-8-0,193) of SILMARILLIAD. DARK OMEGA handily defeated MELKOR in a 2 minute gory
uneven match. Every time I see Dark's name, I think for a minute it says Dark Arena.
Those are so depressing, except in Lirith Kai where the costumes are very colorful.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (28-17-0,192) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN fought HEL (82-14331)
(25-22-0,197) of ARCTIC GUARDS. SEVERUS SNAPE overpowered HEL in an exciting 2
minute brutal one-sided fray.

4097) (32-24-0,186) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. VALKYRIE devastated NEBUCHADNEZZER in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided battle. Wait a minute! I thought we just HAD a
Nebudetcetera! Where did this one come from (yes, I know, Malcorn, but you know what
I mean!)? How can we have two?
PILLSBURY (17-5157) (43-45-2,183) of NH INDUSTRIAL fought TESEN (12-4211) (35-
30-1,180) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. PILLSBURY was devastated by TESEN in a 1 minute
one-sided duel. The oven was too hot. Just like today.
CANDYACID (1-2545) (67-66-1,184) of TASTE THE PAIN fought WWW.QUAM.COM (82-4467)
(28-30-4,186) of EASTERN HORDE 2. CANDYACID savagely defeated WWW.QUAM.COM in a 2
minute brutal fray. So what is with the sign that says "No More Spam"? I mean, spam
is, like, totally boring, but still, it's better than, you know, crackers. If you
add garlic.
NIGHTSTALKER (82-5868) (33-9-0,221) of MAGIC 303 fought MOJO-JOJO (12-3867) (41-
35-1,192) of EASTERN HORDE. NIGHTSTALKER was defeated by MOJO-JOJO in an exciting 2
minute bout.
TRASH QUAM (19-3751) (26-20-2,211) of EASTERN HORDE 3 fought SMUG BUG (55-2900)
(34-50-0,189) of RHYME TYME. TRASH QUAM subdued SMUG BUG in a 2 minute fight. So,
like somebody said, why is this Bug so Smug?
JOE SCHMOE (82-1888) (27-14-2,215) of EASTERN HORDE fought MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-
1744) (37-47-4,196) of BALLROOM BLITZ. JOE SCHMOE viciously subdued MR. TESTOSTERONE
in a popular 2 minute brutal fray. Now, that was just MEAN. Because of Mr.
Testosterone being a really great guy, and a good dancer, and all, and fun on an
adventure.
ROCK A BYE (33-4653) (46-32-3,225) of EASTERN HORDE fought HINDENBIRD (49-1277)
(34-16-0,193) of PETS ON FIRE. ROCK A BYE viciously subdued HINDENBIRD in a popular
6 minute gory bout.
PARTY'S OVER (75-2179) (33-28-0,216) of EASTERN HORDE fought GNU WORLD ORDER
(16-3948) (56-52-3,201) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. PARTY'S OVER was overpowered by GNU
WORLD ORDER in a 1 minute one-sided fray.
FERRET INFERNO (49-361) (35-27-2,214) of PETS ON FIRE fought TYVIN (60-5382)
(40-30-0,187) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. FERRET INFERNO demolished TYVIN in an action
packed 1 minute gruesome one-sided melee.
ROYLAND (56-3380) (50-39-0,216) of REDHORSE fought MOONJUMPER (16-3062) (52-82-
1,186) of PUNNY AMINALS. ROYLAND overpowered MOONJUMPER in a popular 1 minute one-
sided duel. Vicious. I can tell.
LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (82-74-4,214) of ILLFANG PACT fought DREAM WARRIOR (48-
1040) (37-12-0,198) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS. LUMP O'GORE demolished DREAM WARRIOR in an
action packed 2 minute one-sided fight. Is this, like, a dream, or a nightmare?
BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (37-21-2,257) of DARKMOON fought ULTIMATE FURY (12-5020)
(21-9-1,210) of LUROCIANS IV. BEAG MAGDA was vanquished by ULTIMATE FURY in a
popular 1 minute mismatched fray.
PEPE LE FUNK (60-4570) (31-25-1,223) of EASTERN HORDE fought FORBIDDEN DONUT
(16-4788) (20-18-1,190) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS.... PEPE LE FUNK demolished FORBIDDEN
DONUT in a 1 minute uneven bout. Forbidden Donuts are the best. I demolish them,
too, every chance I get. With milk.
Oh, good, challenge matches. I say they're good because once I've done the
counting up and down, I don't have to think of anything else to say unless it just,
you know, sticks out all over.
THE BIG MEOW (21-5307) (14-2-0,81) of MEOW MIX challenged ZENAR (12-4043) (17-
16-1,100) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. Up 19. THE BIG MEOW unbelievably bested ZENAR in a
popular 6 minute gruesome Challenge bout. I believe it, because meow mix is GOOD.
My cat likes it, and cats KNOW.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (15-5-0,84) of SHADOW MOD challenged LOPING WOLF (56-
1796) (49-86-0,97) of REDHORSE. Up 13. BLACK ANDARUS defeated LOPING WOLF in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge conflict. I thought a Black Andarus was a kind of
cow, or, you know, a steer, which is a cow that isn't, sort of. But he didn't look
like a cow.
TESSERACK (33-6641) (25-10-0,100) of SHADOW X challenged CRYPT KEEPER (15-4146)
(28-15-1,113) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Up 13. TESSERACK was overpowered by CRYPT KEEPER
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. And now Tesserack is locked in the crypt,
and now what? You can't get a tan in a crypt.
PANIC ATTACK (9-3624) (19-10-1,139) of DSM4 challenged GRIMTHANE (16-3957) (27-
28-0,152) of THE BLACKHEARTS. Up 13. PANIC ATTACK devastated GRIMTHANE in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight.
LORD REDMOND (12-4109) (28-10-1,142) of LUROCIANS IV challenged MILA (55-29)
(47-79-0,145) of ROCANIS RIDERS. Up 3. LORD REDMOND was viciously subdued by MILA
in a 2 minute Challenge bout. See? Vicious, and Mila is Royland's father, so
Royland must be vicious, too. It's herenical.
ARTEMISIA (12-5096) (26-24-0,121) of DARKMOON challenged IMMORTAL (49-2905) (45-
80-1,121) of RPG'S. Straight across, which is easy math. I like that kind best.
ARTEMISIA defeated IMMORTAL in an action packed 3 minute Challenge struggle.
ALI GATOR (33-5584) (25-31-1,163) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO challenged REDFOX (13-
4197) (39-52-0,180) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 17. ALI GATOR was handily defeated by
REDFOX in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge conflict. Didn't they just DO this? Or was
it somebody else?
MORROLAN (7-4400) (33-34-1,173) of DEATHSGATE challenged BLACKER (33-4445) (56-
80-2,161) of HOMES. Down 12. MORROLAN was subdued by BLACKER in a crowd pleasing 2
minute gory Challenge match.
BEERBARIAN (15-2865) (28-33-1,194) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged MYMID EL NAIMIS
(7-4420) (52-16-1,203) of THE DANGER DOGS. Up 9. BEERBARIAN devastated MYMID EL
NAIMIS in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. Beerbarian had an off-hand
stein. I saw that before once, but not in the arena. Keel Woodhaven had an offhand
stein.
THORON (16-4094) (37-44-0,193) of THE BLACKHEARTS challenged RAVEN EYES (12-
2709) (59-75-0,220) of SWEET MAGIC. Up 27. THORON was overpowered by RAVEN EYES in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight.

2982) (80-66-0,255) of RPG'S. Up 45. ELRORAN was overpowered by PENDRAGON in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge fight.
RED HUMMER (65-5154) (45-46-3,216) of GOOD VIBRATIONS challenged TRY ME NOW (61-
846) (48-44-1,221) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Up 5. RED HUMMER viciously subdued TRY ME NOW
in an action packed 2 minute Challenge fight.
MIMR (82-3783) (41-30-2,225) of SOL INVICTUS challenged BLACKMYTH (11-4018)
(46-28-0,231) of SHADOWS. Up 6. MIMR lost to BLACKMYTH in an action packed 2 minute
Challenge duel. I'm running out of things to say, and, you know, steam, too. But
we're almost at the end.
PARANOIA (9-4557) (10-1-1,115) of DSM4 TV challenged SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543)
(53-79-2,123) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Up 8. PARANOIA devastated SUPERIOR FORCES in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. Gosh, everybody's out to get Superior Forces!
He must be getting paranic, too. But a TV challenge is a good thing to have, if you
like that kind of stuff. We've got five of them working here today. Totally
tubular.
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (36-30-0,207) of DARKMOON TV challenged CREED (64-3997) (62-
39-0,209) of GROOVE MERCHANTS. Up 2. WOUNDWORT overpowered CREED in a 2 minute
mismatched Challenge match.

223) (107-166-0,218) of RHYME TYME. Up 22. BANKRUPT luckily beat GROGGY DOGGY in an
exciting 9 minute gory Challenge melee. Because of the poor doggy being groggy,
which hardly seems fair.
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (42-24-3,194) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q TV challenged MAGE (49-
2918) (63-61-3,199) of RPG'S. Up 5. E.A.POLECAT devastated MAGE in an action packed
2 minute mismatched Challenge fight.

(60-30-0,272) of BLOOM COUNTY. Up 18. WHITE KNIGHT was overpowered by STEVE DALLAS

THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN
PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Mr. Testosterone -- I'm bettin' ye wished ye hadn't challenged me, eh? Sure an' that
was a painful way to get no skills. Y'see, I can't teach what I don't know. -- Lump
o'Gore
Ali Gator -- I let you win. Once again they carried me to the tower to be healed by
Greywand herself. She's hot for me. -- Mila
Xerxes -- No, I haven't been humbled enough, but you couldn't think of any good
insults. Look, if you haven't got a good one, there's always the bathtub thing. --
Kelos
But that is, like, totally hackled.
Runequest -- Whoa, you maxed! Make sure your manager knows. -- Royland
Debby Tonte -- Mean and vicious? Me? Never! I did write ads, but my mean and
vicious dad forgot to post them. -- Royland
Mean and vicious. It says so right here in my notes.
I didn't see any ads on the hall table. -- Mila, still uncomfortable in a guildhouse
fancy enough to have a hall table
Superior Forces -- One hit. That's all it was. What kind of damage do you do? --
Loping Wolf
Santa Sylvester - Where'd Christmas go? - Rillion
Sir Boyd -- 40% of your "significant" managers didn't fight last turn. Yet even if
they did send their usual squads, we would have only had 3.4% more fighters. More
significantly, all of your 'significant' managers combined contributed exactly zero
personal ads, spotlights or DM columns last turn. Exactly what is their significance
to the arena again? -- Rillion
Yeah! Like, what?
Manager -- Here I go and acknowledge your contribution to Free Blades and you repay
the compliment by not contributing any thing yet again. Sigh. -- Rillion
Redfox -- If I can't have that riposte skill I'll at least take the drink. Thank
you! -- Rillion tW
M.E.N. -- You spilled my drink and made me mad! -- Steve Dallas
Shadowgate -- You better hurry up if you plan on beating me to 55%. -- Rillion
Mayhem -- Perhaps you should be more focused and a little less chaotic. It might
help you remain on your feet. -- Elroran
Blindfold Skiing -- I was really upset that I did not get a chance to harm Chalice
before I left, so I took it out on you. -- Harm
Bitter Almond -- Bitter and slow, not a good combination. -- Hermes
But, you know, sure.
Tryurluck -- Seems my luck is just fine. -- Milquetoast
Royland -- Hrmph. -- Severus
Smug Bug -- You're awful smug for some so bad. -- Steve Dallas
Moonracer -- Seems all the practice you have had racing the moon has made you fast.
Much too fast for me, at least you didn't kill me. Dying isn't fun. -- Tesen
Not even for a golem?
Red Hummer -- ARGH! I hate spending every fight on the ground. -- Tyvin
Rosella -- Wow, I guess if I keep fighting stand-ins people might actually think I'm
good. -- Venric
Agro -- Thanks, I needed a new suit of armor and this crocodile scale mail sure looks
swanky. -- Zenar
Debby -- Sorry your source must have misinformed you. I had no deal with Master
Darque. I let Zenar keep the skin to make a new suit of armor. -- Rillion tM
Oh, well, okay. Whatever. It was just something I, like, heard under an eave.
Drake and E.A. Polecat -- Congratulations on your tourney showing. -- Jorja
Sir Boyd -- Thank you, but I don't need you telling me what I already know. As for
how I got to be the most "significant" manager in Freeblades, well superior
managerial prowess, not by picking on the weak! (No offense, Rillion.) -- Sylvester
"Mr. Significant" Frothingslosh
Rillion -- And suddenly you want to keep score? You aren't worth my time chump. --
Sylvester
Raven Eyes -- Don't worry, there'll be a rematch, and I've already beaten more
experienced warriors than you. -- Melkor
Debby T -- What'd you call me?? A "crock"??!!! Let me make something clear to you.
I'm a CROC! That's short for CROCODILE! -- Agro (insulted)
It says "crock" in my notes. Like a tub, or something.
Gladiatorial Commission -- May we, The Croc Files, challenge the spyreporter Debby T
to a bout? She's been making inflammatory statements at Agro and I and we want to
settle the score... -- Graham (indignant)
Indignant is good for you. It's, like, totally aerobic.
Zenar -- Ouch! --Agro
Caffiene Achiever -- Oh, you think you're so smart just because you're training stats
at 62 fights. I have 120 fights and I'm still training skills but that's because I
have like 500 skills already and still learning more. -- Kelos
Paranoia -- I've never been stopped by Greywand's herald before. That is one weird
guy, all solid muscle above the belt and all cloudy below it. Hey, you fought pretty
well but I don't like your style. In the future, fight me as a slasher or a waste.
-- Loping Wolf
Severus Snape -- I just bet you shouldn't be training what you are training. Do you
know that you can damage your long-term potential if you train most stats before
you've got all your skills? The only exception is constitution. It's never too
early in life to start eating better and doing aerobics. -- Royland
A manager told me once that this isn't true sometimes.
Hel -- Sure and I felt strange to swing me sword at a pretty young lass like you. Me
sainted ma never raised me to be winnin' fights with women. Still, you did account
well for yourself and almost won. -- Lump o'Gore
Koosh Ball -- Do you remember just after the Arenamaster held up your arm in victory,
some idiot in the stands yelled "Come on, Mila, you can do it!" That was my friend
Kelos and he had double-dog-dared me to stick a "Kiss me I'm a dwarf" sign to the
back of your armor. So I heard Lucifer kissed you in the locker room, and now you
know why. -- Mila
All -- Well, the short cut back turn went well, but this turn will see my horde or
warriors appear! We will see if they can live up to my smack talk! Get them, boys
and girls! -- Shadowgate
So long as they talk, too.
All -- He better include us in there as we are his best performers! -- Nemesis and
Sethra Lavode (the girls)
I can tell you the best places on the Isle for getting, you know, a tan or
finding men to buy you drinks with umbrellas or whatever.
Risk Taker -- That was fun! It is not often that my style jumps yours and keeps the
attack the whole fight. -- White Knight
Raven Eyes -- OUCH! That BA is vicious! Note to self: Need more CN trains! -- Dark
Omega
Blade Runner # -- That was interesting... I thought you had me for sure there for a
while. Then once I got to swing it was over! -- Blackmyth
Runequest -- That looked painful! Maybe it is time to train something other than
skills. -- M.E.N.
Chalice -- Well done. That was the type of fight I've been wanting since Ultimate
got to 103. I think I learned a few things in that one. -- The Greek Guy
Sylvester Frothingslosh -- I was bored today so I went through the information I have
for all of my warriors in ADM and calculated their records against your guys. I
limited this just to fights in ADM and ADM Tournaments (Freshman & Above) as I do not
have complete records for my non-ADM warriors. I have actually done a little bit
better overall then your guesstimate a while back. You have a decided edge overall
at 24-7 with one kill. The only positive aspect for me was that while the record
here in Free Blades was 23-4 in your favor, in tournaments the record was 3-1 in my
favor. Congratulations on slapping me around, I hope to even that record out a bit
in the future. I'll email you the fight by fight breakdown when this gets published.
-- Rillion
Mr. Testosterone -- Splendidly done, I was impressed. -- Moonjumper
Debby -- We did dance all night, but it was a different night. -- Moonjumper
Ali Gator -- Whoa! Anyone who loses to me isn't really trying. Better polish the
act, my friend. -- Redfox
Joelean -- Women are not supposed to be warriors (how like the Andorians to encourage
it!). So, naturally, I had to take a very firm line with you. -- Brangus
P.S. I am not vicious. That is Andorian propaganda. I am firm and correct. Or
correct and firm.
It says vicious in my notes.
Dark Omega -- What a pleasant surprise. I'm sorry I couldn't teach you any skills,
sir. -- Raven Eyes, savoring that rare experience, a win
Debby -- No, I can't see in the dark. But I have a flashlight. -- Raven Eyes
Oh, well, okay.
Lord Lightspeed -- Uh, sorry it took so long--well, only a minute or two, but I'm
sure it SEEMED like a long time--for me and the arenamaster to drag Madbull off you
after the fight ended. Madbull has a little problem with the concept of "quitting
while he's ahead." -- Redfox
P.S. I'm not sure the red cape is a good idea.
Maybe it was the sequins.
Rillion tW -- I didn't see a name on the label. It was just a generic riposte skill.
-- Redfox
Bobby Bigfoot -- I say, yes, certainly. -- Jorja
Greetings Free Blades! I have decided to bring a fistful of my graduates to your
fine arena from 100. I look forward to butting heads with many of you. -- Chazz
Frothingslosh (Pets On Fire, Homeric Mmmmmms, 22 Acacia Avenue, and Estimated
Prophets.)
Grasshopper -- I'm sure that Primus must be looking for very good fighters like you.
-- Woundwort
Mage -- Debbie Tonte says that you had to lose because you couldn't use magic; but
you do have a winning record, and I've never seen a mere dweomercrafter throw
critical attacks and parries with a morningstar before, so you look like a gladiator
to me! -- Woundwort
E.A. Polecat -- Now that was a close and well fought match! -- Beag Magda
Sidon -- Blind challenges are killing my record. -- Artemisia
P.S. I just spoke with a newly arrived fighter named Sampsa, who said that he
thought he's a might better than yourself, and says that he'll test you out after his
freshman status ends.
Fodderer -- All I needed to turn the tables on you was to land one single blow, but
you kept your wits about you, and you kept the pressure on me. Good job. Now I'm
off to Homeguard to try and salvage my record. -- Queen Amazonia
Moonjumper -- You may be right. I never did know just what to say to the ladies. My
attempt at levity was rather crass in retrospect. Please know that I intended no
offense. -- Mimr
30 April 2003
All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned
in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI
10 May 2003
To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione
