Ibizond, Korga, and in between:
Aghtamar and Zilla had argued with Fist of Kjarran, but not for long. After
all, someone to play bait WAS needed, and he WAS a Lord Protector and therefore had
guaranteed resurrection.... The Murskan, Cadal, suggested that they all get a good
night's sleep here in Ibizond, look over the area where they wanted to set their trap
tomorrow by daylight, and then run the bait tomorrow night. This seemed such a
sensible suggestion that Aghtamar hesitated to accept it; there was sure to be an
unpleasant catch in it somewhere. But Zilla was for it, and even Fist, not one to
wallow in luxuries, agreed, so she shrugged and nodded.
They stayed at the inn where they'd eaten, the Red Cow, and it seemed to
Aghtamar that the night was endless. She dozed and woke and dozed and woke and it
was still dark. Maybe the sun had forgotten to rise. Maybe she was caught in some
magical time loop. Maybe she was worrying too much. Maybe she had insomnia. She
rolled over and thumped her pillow and tried to go to sleep again. Really asleep
this time. But there were so many things that could go wrong....
By the time morning came--reluctantly, with lots of clouds and a cold, damp
wind--Aghtamar was a rag. Squinting at the imperfect mirror in the small bedroom,
she amended that to a depressed, grumpy rag. Or hag. The kind of rag or hag that no
right-thinking gladiator would want as a companion on an adventure. She was going to
be as second-rate at adventuring as she had been in the arena. She was just working
up a really good depression when Zilla pounded on the door.
"Come on," Zilla urged, bouncing on her toes once the door was opened. "The
guys are waiting."
"Maybe it would be better if I didn't--"
"They're WAITING for us, Aghtamar. Come ON." Zilla grabbed her arm and dragged
her out into the inn's tiny hallway. "I kind of LIKE having a couple of men waiting
for us," she confided. "Even though Cadal is OLD, he must be forty or even FIFTY,
he's a very HOT-looking old man...."
At that, Aghtamar laughed. "I didn't know you had a thing for older men,
Zilla!"
"Well, he's a Lord Protector, so he won't get any older than he IS, after all,
and I bet he knows lots of INTERESTING things." She glanced sideways at her friend.
"I bet he knows some men he could introduce to you."
"Uh...Zilla, I'm not really looking for--"
"You should be. It's great exercise!"
"Zilla!"
"Jack told me to watch out for you," Zilla said. "He likes you. I like you.
Lots of people like you. He was, we were all worried you might get depressed again.
You take things too seriously, Aghty."
"'Aghty'?"
"What kind of nickname would YOU suggest I make out of Aghtamar? Why you ever
let your folks--or Jack if it was him--saddle you with such a mouthful of a name...."
Zilla squinted at her thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll call you 'Sunshine'. Would that be
better?"
By this time, they had arrived at the ground floor, where Fist of Kjarran and
Cadal were, indeed, waiting. "I've got horses for us all," Cadal said the moment
they appeared, "and lunches packed. Let's go, we're burning daylight here."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Basically, the part of the Traders' Road that ran between Ibizond and Korga was
just like the parts between Korgan and Malcorn and between Ibizond and Murska.
Unpaved, rutted, hilly, muddy in the low spots, with trees crowding close on both
sides most of the way. Many of the steepest hills had been cut down to make the
grade easier, with the road passing through dirt-walled notches--great places for an
ambush, as Fist of Kjarran observed cheerfully.
Cadal nodded, but he looked gloomy. "Great places," he agreed, "but our killer
doesn't use 'em, mostly. Out of the dozen we think are victims of the same killer,
only two were attacked at a road cut like this." He looked up at the steep, muddy
banks with their shaggy topping of brush and sighed. "One in six isn't significant.
That would be too easy. Our killer doesn't seem to need ambuscades."
"But we do," Zilla said. "So, which ones do you favor, and how do you expect us
to get the killer to attack Fist where we're watching?"
"There is no way," Aghtamar muttered.
"Sure there is. Fist sets out in a group--say four people--from Ibizond about
sunset. As he approaches the spot we've picked as best for our purposes, the other
three turn back, leaving him to enter the target zone alone. So far, the killer has
never attacked a group as big as four, and besides, we can probably get enough out-
of-work gladiators from Murska, gods know there are plenty of them, to do the escort.
But my figuring is that he won't be attacked till he's alone. And if he gets beyond
the optimum area without an attack, he turns and comes back, and if he gets all the
way back through it without being attacked, we join him and call it a night and go
back to Ibizond."
"I wouldn't like to go back to the inn and leave a job undone," Fist of Kjarran
protested.
"But doing the job needs the cooperation of our killer, so we're not totally in
control of that," Zilla pointed out. "This sounds like a decent bet. Let's do it."

Rithakar:
As the lancer came nearer, Onuphre drew his sword and awaited the charge with
bared steel. A thunder of hooves burst out of the silence of the night. The horse
staggered and seemed to have trouble regaining a smooth stride. The lance wobbled
and missed the Shew as the man closed with him. Onuphre sidestepped and his sword
licked out.
Bellerophon kept his attention on the main body of the ghost troop. They had
shown no awareness when Onuphre drew his sword, but when Bellerophon and the rest of
the gladiators armed themselves, the company faltered in its steady progress. It
seemed to ripple in their vision, as though they were looking at it through running
water.
"They are barely in this world," Tamea Soulkeeper murmured behind the
gladiators. "I had heard of such things but never expected to see it."
Ultraist glanced over his shoulder at her. "What do you know about it?"
"About this particular example, not a thing," she answered calmly. "About the
phenomenon... a little." She returned his look from half-closed eyes. "Why should I
share my hard-won knowledge with you?"
"Why shouldn't you?" Debby Tonte asked from farther back. The well-tanned spy
report could be just glimpsed coming up, mostly by the large umbrella she carried.
"I mean, we're comrades, right? We're, like, unallajous together."
"I wouldn't have put it QUITE like that," Mr. Testosterone muttered, "but then
again, she does have a point." He looked at Tamea expectantly.
Shrugging as though it didn't matter (though her frown said otherwise), Tamea
said, "It's a kind of stasis, half pocket universe, half time-stop. At least, that's
what I've heard. There are usually some specific signals that end the spell--a time
limit, or some triggering event. Or two events, here, apparently. Whatever set them
in motion to begin with, and the Shew drawing steel on them to finalize the, hmm,
reconnection." She glanced over at Onuphre.
The Shew was having no trouble with his opponent. The man's movements were slow
and awkward, though definitely hostile in intent. The horse was in serious trouble,
stumbling, overshooting turns, and seeming to sag with exhaustion or age as they
watched.
"But the others haven't emerged from their, um, pocket universe," E.A. Polecat
argued. "So--"
"Part of the same problem," the witch said with an airy wave of her hand.
"Sloppy workmanship is what *I* would call it. Even in stasis, people and horses
don't last forever, you know. I guess whoever set this up expected it to be
triggered sooner--a LOT sooner--and didn't put a final time limit on it." She looked
at the ghost troop and bared her sharp white teeth. "So these fine fellows have
passed their peak. Lile wine too long in the cellar. If they can break out of the
stasis completely--which seems to be giving them trouble--they'll be easy meat. One
might learn many interesting things from an examination of their souls...."
"That would be totally necrophilatilous!" Debby Tonte said in a shocked voice.
"I don't think you should."
Before anyone could reply to this, a thin cry of anguish jerked their attention
back to Onuphre, who had kept his mind focused on his job: killing the lancer who
was trying to kill him. The man had been unhorsed, and they saw that he had drawn a
sword of his own and made battle on foot. But the Shew was too big, too fast, and
too vigorous for him.
Onuphre had disarmed the man and was now holding him in an iron grip to prevent
him bleeding to death from the stump. Seeing that he had his companions' attention
again, the Shew said, "I thought we might want to ask this fellow some questions."

The Isle of the Eye, Talahya:
"Okay," Carris Fallstar said, "how do we tackle your two angles? How do we find
where the, uh, 'magical links' that bind the Isle to Alastari are located?"
Everyone turned to look at Moonjumper, who frowned at the ground between her
feet. "I'm not sure," she said slowly, "but I might--only might--be able to identify
them. But it would help a LOT if I had some idea, however vague, of what the
identifying characteristics of such a site WERE."
All eyes now moved to the old wizard. Fizban sighed. "I suppose 'used to be
strongly magical but nothing working there now' is not enough?"
"You suppose correctly!" Carris muttered. "What an idea--used to be...." He
shook his head. "The Isle positively reeks of magic, past and present, and well you
must know it, if you're any kind of wizard at all!"
"Look," Scarlatti interrupted, "I don't know much about magic, but it stands to
reason that the kind we're talking about would be different than, um, regular magic,
and a lot more powerful. There must be some way to tell that?"
There was a silence that seemed long.
Finally Rogan said, "What about the ferry docks? That's where the physical
connections are anchored, so why shouldn't the magical connections be in the same
locations?"
"Sounds good," Scarlatti agreed. "Can you lead us to a ferry dock through this
fog?"
The blind gladiator smiled faintly. "Easily." He set off down the street, and
the others fell in behind him.
The city was mostly silent, and the gladiators met no one as they hurried toward
the shore. There were people about--now and then they could hear footsteps fading
away, or voices just too muffled to be understandable. The fog was so heavy that
even their immediate surroundings seemed unreal. A sound shook the air, heavy as a
mountain, dull as despair. It was repeated six times.
"Gods!" Fizban wiped sweat from his face.
"What was it?" Carris asked, one hand on his sword.
"A clock tolling the hour of seven," Moonjumper guessed, but she sounded unsure
of it. "Maybe the one at the Stronghold Academy...."
"It never sounded like that before," Scarlatti growled.
"Another sign of the differences here and now, wherever and whenever here and
now is." Rogan pulled his cloak a little more snugly around himself, though the
evening was no colder now than it had been an hour ago. Or maybe it was colder. It
was impossible to be sure.
Sooner than they expected, the cobbles underfoot changed to planks, and the
smell of the air changed from stone and fog to mud and fish and water.
Carris Fallstar stopped and sniffed, then drew in a lungful of air and seemed to
taste it slowly. "Salt water, I could swear it smells like salt water," he muttered.
"But the lake is fresh!" Scarlatti protested.
"But is this the lake we remember?" Fizban asked. "I doubt it."
The Isle of the Eye, Lirin Kiv:
The carriage jolted as though the pavement had suddenly ended, rolled a few feet
farther, and stopped. After a moment, there was a creaking shift as the driver
climbed down. Shylock glimpsed his lantern moving through the fog, going ahead past
the horses, then coming back.
The face that appeared at the window was white, eyes round with disbelief. "The
road is lost," the driver said hoarsely.
Shylock frowned at him. "You mean YOU are lost--"
"No! I swear, I was following the road right along, and then it... it just
wasn't there anymore!"
Shylock looked hard at the driver and decided the man wasn't lying. He might be
mistaken, but he believed what he was saying. And if he wasn't mistaken.... Well,
better to find out for himself, the gladiator decided. He unlatched the door and
stepped down from the carriage. "Wait here," he said over his shoulder to Clemenda.
"Not hardly!" She climbed down after him.
The driver held up his lantern, swinging it from side to side, which set shadows
swooping wildly. Shylock took the lantern away from him and held it steady.
It was true. A pace behind the rear wheels of the carriage were the flat stones
of the roadway. Under the wheels and ahead was rocky dirt and tangled grasses and no
sign that there'd ever been a road.
"Amazing," Shylock murmured, "this is something quite without precedent, so far
as I know. I wonder what else has changed?"
"Don't say that!" Clemenda looked around fearfully. "I like things to be
ordinary," she whispered, "no surprises...."
"It would appear that surprises are the name of the entertainment tonight,"
Shylock countered. "Still.... Driver, take us back the way we came, to Lirin Kiv."
The man hurried to climb back onto the box as Shylock assisted Clemenda into the
body of the carriage again. The horses were turned, and they went rumbling back onto
the paving and southward... or at least, back. No telling if it was still south.
Shylock leaned out the window to watch ahead. Even in this fog, it should be
possible to see the lighted tower of the Temple of Mantor for a fair distance.
Judging the current speed of the horses against the pace at which they had come out,
it should be possible to see it now.
But he didn't see it.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Yowza! Who would have imagined that I would ever be Lord Marshall? Me! That's who!
This has been a long time coming. Clearly I am the best warrior here and the only
way any of you is going to get me off this throne is by pure luck. Since learning my
last riposte skill back on turn 335, I have gone 14-1 here in Free Blades. Since
Rillion is forcing me to make this longer, he says it's my obligation since he has
complained about other "Managers" not contributing Lord Marshall Columns to the
arena. Why I should be forced to do something because he complained is beyond me,
but I'll humor him since he's picking up the bar tab. So remember, the martinis and
pizzas are on him, so eat and drink up!
Steve Dallas, Lord Marshall Extraordinaire
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. FREE BLADES needs a spy report." Actually, they didn't say
that, because of me being already here, but it's the principle of the thing, you
know?
Oh, well, here I am, anyway, and there are lots of you here, and the scribes
from the Commission office brought me a sunbrella and drinks with umbrellas in them
and extra fruit, so it's okay.
We had the most fights today of any regional, sixty-five! Everybody's coming
here. Darkholm only had forty, and Andorak and forty-seven, and we won't, you know,
mention Lirin Kiv at all. Sixty-five fights, and thirty-five were challenge matches,
which is totally tubular. But because of there being so many, I just can't talk
about them all.
Scarlatti got the Man Vaulting Points award, whatever that is, for when he
fought Mymid El Namis and got ninety-seven points for it, which seems like a lot all
at once.
Steve Dallas got the most challenges, which is the way it should be on account
of him being the Lord Marshall and having pizza every night.
DSM4 was avoided by Blackest Pride, but I don't know why.
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. What if they had a fight and nobody showed
up? We could all go on picnics together, is what!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. I had
a fun time, see you later.
Debby Tonte
Oh, right, you want stuff about the fights. Well, here.
THE BIG MEOW (21-5307) (15-2-0,98) of MEOW MIX fought JOELEAN (97-903) (9-8-
4,36) of IVER'S GIRLS. THE BIG MEOW outlasted JOELEAN in a slow 20 minute one-sided
match. I think this might be the longest fight, or anyway, it was the longest
enough. I mean, I had time to get my nails done, and my toenails TOO.
REDFOX (13-4197) (40-52-0,189) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought BLACKER (33-4445) (57-
80-2,173) of HOMES. REDFOX was viciously butchered by BLACKER in a crowd pleasing 3
minute brutal match. A death. We don't have these lots, but we had three today and
I think I should, you know, just mention them.
MIMR (82-3783) (41-31-2,201) of SOL INVICTUS fought WHITE KNIGHT (58-5971) (52-
41-2,201) of CRUSADE. MIMR was beaten by WHITE KNIGHT in an action packed 3 minute
bloody bout. Because it was action packed, which only three fights were today.
NEMESIS (4-5115) (41-8-0,191) of CHAMPIONS fought XERXES (67-2429) (37-31-2,206)
of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE. NEMESIS devastated XERXES in an exciting 1 minute mismatched
fight. Because of being exciting, which a lot were, but I just have to go by the
notes because some days I can't tell.
AZREAL ELS III (4-4482) (23-14-2,199) of EASTERN HORDE fought ELRORAN (12-4386)
(38-25-2,194) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. AZREAL ELS III overpowered ELRORAN in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided struggle.
SCARLATTI (29-3867) (56-31-1,218) of CRUEL BUT FAIR fought MYMID EL NAIMIS (7-
4420) (52-17-1,187) of THE DANGER DOGS. SCARLATTI easily killed MYMID EL NAIMIS in
an exciting 1 minute gory one-sided bout. Another death! This is what made
Scarlatti MVP, I guess. It seems kind of hard.
RAVEN EYES (12-2709) (60-75-0,229) of SWEET MAGIC fought THORON (16-4094) (37-
45-0,186) of THE BLACKHEARTS. RAVEN EYES handily defeated THORON in an exciting 1
minute one-sided duel. She could see his black heart on account of her eyes.
RED HUMMER (65-5154) (46-46-3,226) of GOOD VIBRATIONS fought NIRFAUNA (16-4214)
(28-44-3,188) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. RED HUMMER savagely defeated NIRFAUNA in an
action packed 2 minute gory bout. Which just SHOWS that Nirfauna really WAS a
helpless animal, so it was cruel, right?
You know, if some of you want to be mentioned, you have to do something to,
like, catch my eye. Like issue a challenge or at least have lots of action and
excitement in your fight. Or die.
YAMA (82-11638) (11-8-0,45) of DEATH HORDE VI challenged LOPING WOLF (56-1796)
(49-87-0,88) of REDHORSE. Up 43. YAMA beat LOPING WOLF in an exciting 2 minute
Challenge competition. All I saw that was exciting was the horse. It isn't every
day we have a horse on the sands, you know.
HAYSEED X-IV (82-6120) (12-7-1,52) of PROJECT HAYSEED challenged POINTY (16-
4427) (28-21-0,77) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS.... Up 25. HAYSEED X-IV overpowered POINTY in
a 1 minute uneven Challenge bout. The fans laughed about this. I don't know why.
Unless maybe they were farmers?
HERMES (58-6016) (14-4-0,88) of MYTHICAL challenged THE MADNESS (21-5214) (21-8-
1,68) of BLACKEST PRIDE. Down 20. HERMES was demolished by THE MADNESS in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge conflict. Ooooo, madness! This is, like, exciting to me,
but I guess not to somebody else.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (22-17-0,60) of CROC FILES challenged NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821)
(15-10-0,59) of BLADES OF WONDER. Down 1. GRAHAM handily defeated NEBUCHADNEZZAR in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Did you see Graham bite of Nebu's beard and
tie it into like a tail for his helmet?
MELTDOWN (32-3836) (18-3-0,67) of WOLF PACK II challenged SAMPSA (31-4233) (17-
1-2,47) of SOL INVICTUS. Down 20. MELTDOWN demolished SAMPSA in an exciting 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. My chocolate melted down today. It was, like,
totally hot, you know?
TESSERACK (33-6641) (25-11-0,97) of SHADOW X challenged FODDERER (36-5602) (21-
19-0,99) of ANARKYSTS. Up 2. TESSERACK devastated FODDERER in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided Challenge duel. And then he, meaning, you know, Tesserack, folded
him, meaning Fodderer, into a shape with too many sides and no place to put them.
VENRIC (60-5709) (17-16-0,99) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 challenged BRANGUS (16-
4162) (21-28-1,40) of PUNNY AMINALS. Down 59. Gosh. VENRIC was beaten by BRANGUS
in an exciting 2 minute Challenge fray.Brangus was next to the bottom warrior last
time, but now that he's won, he's way higher up. He says he's going to stay there,
too.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (16-5-0,97) of SHADOW MOD challenged SWEET CHASTITY (35-
504) (30-23-1,105) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE. Up 8. BLACK ANDARUS savagely defeated SWEET
CHASTITY in an exciting 2 minute Challenge fight. I don't think this was NICE.
Andarus should be ASHAMED of himself. Savage, even.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (25-20-0,125) of SHADOWCIRCLE challenged GRIMTHANE (16-
3957) (27-29-0,138) of THE BLACKHEARTS. Up 13. SHEA MAGEBORN vanquished GRIMTHANE
in an exciting 4 minute one-sided Challenge fray. There were a lot of circles in
this fight, did you see them?
DESECRATION (21-4392) (21-12-2,120) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged SUPERIOR FORCES
(33-4543) (53-80-2,112) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Down 8. DESECRATION vanquished
SUPERIOR FORCES in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. Which means that
Forces wasn't REALLY Superior.
LIMA BEAN FLAMBE (70-3118) (26-16-0,118) of HEAVE HO! challenged ARTEMISIA (12-
5096) (27-24-0,129) of DARKMOON. Up 11. LIMA BEAN FLAMBE viciously subdued
ARTEMISIA in a 2 minute bloody Challenge bout. Well, of course. I mean, lima beans,
who's surprised?
CLOD PUNTER (66-3309) (30-35-3,150) of MAROON MIDGET challenged TRAVELLER (49-
2866) (66-68-2,179) of RPG'S. Up 29. CLOD PUNTER was beaten by TRAVELLER in an
action packed 3 minute gory Challenge duel. I saw them fighting before the fights,
in the line to get tickets for the ferry.
MORROLAN (7-4400) (33-35-1,163) of DEATHSGATE challenged RUNEQUEST (49-2862)
(58-90-3,168) of RPG'S. Up 5. MORROLAN was overpowered by RUNEQUEST in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge bout. Did you know Runequest has lots of tattoos? He does.
Somebody told me, I didn't, you know, see them myself.
ANTHRAXUS (33-5723) (24-15-1,177) of DEATH HORDE challenged CHAOS LICH (15-4132)
(35-21-0,185) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Up 8. ANTHRAXUS was overpowered by CHAOS LICH in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. Which is kind of summerical, isn't it? I mean,
death and graveyards.
D (82-44) (20-9-0,172) of EASTERN HORDE 4 challenged FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (78-
112-1,166) of RHYME TYME. Down 6. D was defeated by FUNNY BUNNY in a popular 1
minute Challenge match. Why it was popular is because of Bunny always telling jokes
at the end of the fight. The fans like that.
TITAN (21-5070) (32-18-1,188) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged MOONJUMPER (16-3062)
(52-83-1,183) of PUNNY AMINALS. Down 5. TITAN was handily defeated by MOONJUMPER in
a 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. But what if she didn't use her hands? Would it
still be handily?
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (29-17-0,210) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN challenged HINDENBIRD
(49-1277) (34-17-0,197) of PETS ON FIRE. Down 13. SEVERUS SNAPE was narrowly
defeated by HINDENBIRD in a 6 minute Challenge duel. Six minutes was too long. I
thought Hindenbird's fire was going to go out.
NIGHTSTALKER (82-5868) (33-10-0,196) of MAGIC 303 challenged TRYURLUCK (61-1029)
(44-34-1,199) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Up 3. NIGHTSTALKER handily defeated TRYURLUCK in a
1 minute Challenge competition. And it wasn't even night, because of us having no
dark arena, only a light one.
WWW.QUAM.COM (82-4467) (28-31-4,181) of EASTERN HORDE 2 challenged HOUSE MOUSE
(55-221) (104-165-2,189) of RHYME TYME. Up 8. WWW.QUAM.COM beat HOUSE MOUSE in a
popular 1 minute Challenge match. With spam.
BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (37-22-2,194) of DARKMOON challenged KOOSH BALL (71-3536)
(32-20-0,201) of STUFF I BROUGHT. Up 7. BEAG MAGDA was luckily beaten by KOOSH BALL
in an exciting 7 minute Challenge bout. Is that a play on numbers, up seven for
seven minutes? And Koosh is from arena seven-one, too.
CREED (64-3997) (62-40-0,193) of GROOVE MERCHANTS challenged DR. SCUM (15-1968)
(42-44-2,215) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Up 22. CREED was basted by DR. SCUM in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute Challenge brawl. The sauce had honey, and soy (ick!), and peppers,
and lots of other stuff in it, and Drake said it would be GOOD for Creed, but Creed
seemed, like, upset, you know? Maybe because of it getting in his hair.
PARTY'S OVER (75-2179) (33-29-0,191) of EASTERN HORDE challenged MOONRACER (50-
3206) (32-24-1,190) of MISFIT TOYS. Down 1. PARTY'S OVER devastated MOONRACER in an
exciting 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. Moonracer didn't WANT the party to be over,
anyone could see that.
MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-1744) (37-48-4,196) of BALLROOM BLITZ challenged MALICE
(15-3729) (33-23-0,201) of MISCELLANEA. Up 5. MR. TESTOSTERONE handily defeated
MALICE in a popular 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Because of Malice can't dance.
Mr. dances BEAUTIFULLY. I know. We danced at the Hamadrina Hilton.
MELKOR (13-1821) (30-9-0,182) of SILMARILLIAD challenged TESEN (12-4211) (36-30-
1,193) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. Up 11. MELKOR was savagely defeated by TESEN in a
popular 2 minute bloody Challenge brawl. Well, you know how it is with demons. It
was because of Melkor having a bad guy name, and Tesen being jealous. Demons do lots
of jealousy. It's in their contracts.
JOE SCHMOE (82-1888) (28-14-2,222) of EASTERN HORDE challenged DARK OMEGA (21-
4983) (38-34-0,214) of LORDS OF SHADOWS. Down 8. JOE SCHMOE butchered DARK OMEGA in
a 1 minute brutal mismatched Challenge conflict. Which is the third death, and it's
a good thing that this isn't a week for the city perishing if six people die. I
mean, we're half way there, and I haven't even looked at the news to see what
happened in Talahya and Andorak and Crysalis and Primus which are all here, too.
ROCK A BYE (33-4653) (47-32-3,240) of EASTERN HORDE challenged BLACKMYTH (11-
4018) (47-28-0,245) of SHADOWS. Up 5. ROCK A BYE was savagely defeated by BLACKMYTH
in an exciting 4 minute Challenge fight. I read in a book once about blackmiths
having hidden powers. Do you think that was it here?
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (43-24-3,211) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged TRASH QUAM
(19-3751) (27-20-2,214) of EASTERN HORDE 3. Up 3. E.A.POLECAT savagely defeated
TRASH QUAM in an exciting 3 minute Challenge fight. And it wasn't even trash-pick-up
day, which is not till tomorrow, which means Trash Quam will have to sit in the
dumpster until tomorrow. But I'll take him a drink with an umbrella in it, in case
the dew falls.
PARANOIA (9-4557) (11-1-1,130) of DSM4 TV challenged ALI GATOR (33-5584) (25-32-
1,157) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO. Up 27. PARANOIA was handily defeated by ALI GATOR in
a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. Which just SHOWS about people REALLY being out to
get Paranoia all the time! But it was good that he had a TV challenge to use, so he
could PICK who got to get him this time.
And all the next fights, making a total of seven, are TV challenges, which is
really great. It's impressive.
AHRINGOL [tW] (33-5726) (20-11-0,165) of DEATH HORDE TV challenged PANIC ATTACK
(9-3624) (20-10-1,157) of DSM4. Down 8. AHRINGOL tW overpowered PANIC ATTACK in a
popular 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. But didn't kill Panic, which I think
was very nice of him. I mean, nobody would have been SURPRISED if Ahringol tW had
killed him.
BANKRUPT (71-3786) (35-11-0,204) of SHADOW GOLD TV challenged FERRET INFERNO
(49-361) (36-27-2,229) of PETS ON FIRE. Up 25. BANKRUPT was viciously subdued by
FERRET INFERNO in a popular 4 minute Challenge duel. One of the bookies said that
Bankrupt owed money to Ferret, and that's WHY Ferret was so vicous. I don't know.
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (37-13-0,192) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS TV challenged GROGGY
DOGGY (55-223) (107-167-0,202) of RHYME TYME. Up 10. DREAM WARRIOR savagely
defeated GROGGY DOGGY in an exciting 3 minute Challenge fight. It doesn't make any
difference HOW many times we tell him, Doggy always gets drunk before the fights
because of not having umbrellas, and then he loses. Well, almost always.
TRY ME NOW (61-846) (48-45-1,195) of BLOOD KNIGHTS TV challenged MOJO-JOJO (12-
3867) (42-35-1,216) of EASTERN HORDE. Up 21. TRY ME NOW was overpowered by MOJO-
JOJO in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge duel. And Mojo did try him, and you see what
happens?
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (37-30-0,230) of DARKMOON TV challenged LUMP O'GORE (13-
1212) (83-74-4,239) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 9. WOUNDWORT subdued LUMP O'GORE in an
exciting 2 minute Challenge melee. But messy. I mean, exciting in a messy kind of
way, on account of lots of gore, which is too much. Any gore is too much.
ULTIMATE FURY (12-5020) (22-9-1,229) of LUROCIANS IV TV challenged MILQUETOAST
(33-5313) (58-37-2,255) of BLOOM COUNTY. Up 26. ULTIMATE FURY devastated
MILQUETOAST in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. I think it's Milque's name,
myself. I mean, if he'd change his name to Peppertoast or something, it would
probably be all different.
And for the title of being Lord Marshall, even though he was most challenged,
STEVE DALLAS (33-5314) (61-30-0,291) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged PEPE LE FUNK (60-
4570) (32-25-1,232) of EASTERN HORDE. Down 59. STEVE DALLAS won victory over PEPE
LE FUNK in a 3 minute Challenge Title fight. But Pepe fought back, so it was good.
Not too easy.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Rillion -- Bite me. I pulled my DM columns to protest you and your lame rankings.
I'll write ads and columns when I want, not when poked and prodded by the likes of
you and Sir Boyd. -- Manager
Sir Boyd -- A turn or so back I noticed an ad you wrote to Sentinel I believe
something to the effect of referring to Andorak being more competitive than Free
Blades? Why don't you come here instead of hiding away in that backwater Lirith Kai
arena and let us convince you otherwise.... -- Sylvester Frothingslosh
Rillion -- Thanks for the standings. I don't keep records very well so your post
helped greatly. So now it is 25-7. -- Sylvester
Saint, Scribe -- Please make a note that all Ultraist's teams are now managed by
Sylvester Frothingslosh--thanks. -- Sylvester F.
Yep, I've got the change noted. -- The Saint, keeper of lists
Chazz -- Welcome to Free Blades! -- Sylvester
Sylvester -- I see I am not the only one that talks out his butt. You say I'm not
worth your time, yet you continue to take the time to fill out the forms necessary to
challenge my warriors. I am glad you have brought more warriors here, it gives me
more to chose from. Plus the more you fight the quicker your record will drop. I
would say I am looking forward to the day I pass you in the ranks but I am sure you
will realize your mistake and cut back your squad here before your record drops too
far. -- Rillion
Royland -- I have learned all but a handful of parry skills. If you noticed, I was
training wit, which does not 'burn' any parry skills. But I will probably go ahead
and get those parry skills when I start training my strength and/or will. If I need
to rely on my parry, I've already lost the fight. -- Severus Snape
Shadowgate -- You still here? I can not find your teams listed in the team rankings.
Oh wait, there they are, oh my, you seem to have moved over to the "also ran" side of
the page. ;) Perhaps if you used those TV challenges on someone else you might
start moving up the ranks instead of down them. -- Rillion
All -- Well, that sucked! 5-7 really is sad. I now really have to work a bit to get
to 55% before Rillion! Worse yet, I gave him two wins! -- Shadowgate
Milktoast (or whatever your name is) -- You got lucky, punk! I will be back. I
understand your manager made a deal with mine to leave you alone for a turn but I
WILL be back! -- Nemesis
Steve Dallas -- Now that was embarrassing! Ok, I guess I have some more work to do!
-- White Knight
Mimr -- Nice try! You even hit me. Too bad neither of us got anything out of it! --
Blackmyth
Beerbarian -- Wow! You got lucky with that one! Let me know if you want to try that
again! -- M.E.N.
Blacker -- Well that was successful! Really! Any fight I get more than one skill in
is great! -- Morrolan
Crypt Keeper -- Ouch! That is an amazing hit! -- Tesserack
Mojo-Jojo -- Hey! I thought I had you there! Guess I need to train some CN. --
Nightstalker
Melkor -- Cool! I challenged you but it didn't get through but you got me anyway! --
Dark Omega
D -- What the hell! Your style should have done that well vs. me! Then you go and
get a train and I get nothing! Ack! -- Shea Mageborn
Nebuchadnezzar (of Blades of Wonder) -- Sorry about that! I was impressed you stuck
around for the second swing! -- Sethra Lavode
Nemesis -- You TV'd? I will have to give Rillion my nastiest glare for not sending
me to the last tournament. I mean there must not have been much competition if you
were one of the best. -- Milquetoast
White Knight -- Thanks! -- Steve Dallas
The Big Meow -- You better get your licks in now cause my endurance increases with
every fight. -- Zenar
Ferret Inferno -- Hmm, I don't think I've ever gotten spanked so hard by one of your
style. -- Tyvin
Pillsbury -- Thanks for the win but next time I'd prefer a defense skill. -- Tesen
Hel -- Welcome to it! -- Severus Snape
Tryurluck -- I don't like to try my luck, I prefer to have an easy win. So hopefully
we won't fight again. -- Rillion tW
Yama -- What does a golem have to do to lose around here? -- Venric
Psychosis -- You almost had me there for a second, but I was too quick for you. --
Hermes
Thoron -- You started with a black heart, but now it's more colorful: black and
blue. Good try, though. -- Raven Eyes
Ali Gator -- Well, you know how it goes. I'm all for kindness to animals, but I
don't pet things that have teeth big enough to bite off my hand. Just a personal
rule of thumb (and fingers). -- Redfox
Royland -- Tish. I bet you haven't done any personals. -- Moonjumper
Well, ha! He did.
Nightie Knight -- Wow, you really annoyed him that time. And I'm afraid he never was
a "make love, not war" type. -- Redfox
Graham -- My day will come. You will be filleted and served with horseradish. --
Brangus
Mimr -- I did know that. -- Moonjumper
All -- Welcome to all new teams, gladiators, and managers. The personals are looking
up, and I'm sure the competition will too. -- Bobby Bigfoot, for Darkmoon et al
Creed -- I was really trying for skills, not a win. Still 12 to go, and counting. --
Woundwort
Blackmyth -- I thought that I had turned the tide of the battle quite nicely;
however, you turned it back 'round again and pressed your advantage to the fullest.
I say brilliantly done! -- Mimr
Immortal -- You did some flashy things with your two weapons; I was fortunate to find
an opening in your defense in time. -- Artemisia
Ultimate Fury -- That exchange was thrilling; I was disappointed though, by my weak
finish. -- Beag Magda
Pointy -- You really put on the pressure well, and kept me off of my stride. Of
course I am rather inexperienced yet, I hope to do well after my freshman status
expires. -- Sampsa
Lord Redmond -- That was some brave challenge. You've got guts enough, all right.
But I'm not much of a teacher, am I? -- Mila
Black Andarus -- Those were MY skills. I don't appreciate being challenged by young
whippersnappers who want to spill my precious bodily fluids and steal my skills. --
Loping Wolf
Dream Warrior -- I especially liked the part where I twisted me blade around your
parry, yelled "Omigod! An olliephant!" and whacked ye in the butt when ye turned to
look. It's hard to get a lot of force into a blow when I do it like that, but
there's somethin' extra delightful about a gullible opponent. And then the fight got
even better when I pulled the same gag again, this time with the Royal Delarquan
Pegasus Corps. You've got to get a rein on that elven streak of yours, boyo. When
you step into the arena, clamp down on that imagination, bare your teeth and think
like a junkyard dog. That means don't think too much. -- Lump o'Gore
Moonjumper -- I always feel like I should apologize when I keep attacking someone who
has fallen down. I mean, I know we're supposed to, but it goes against my
upbringing. I am sorry. -- Royland
Catatonic -- How you learned a parry skill from me I have no idea. I don't parry
worth beans! At least you got something for your trouble. I hope you get a better
matchup next time around. -- Kelos
10 May 2003
To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists
