WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
Hey, everybody, look it's:
THE FREE BLADES SEMESTER IN REVIEW
(Turns 339 to 349)
Okay, so technically the semester started on turn 338. Unfortunately, I don't have
the info I need to include that turn in this report. Yeah, you get shorted a turn,
but at least you're getting a report. Live with it. Similarly, since I haven't done
one of these in a while, I'm not going to be doing any comparisons to any old reports
(though I may make a comment or two about Home Guard as I run these over there as
well). All right, enough with the explanations, let's get on with the show:
THE TOP 5 MANAGERS OF THE LAST SEMESTER
Manager W L K Rec Percent
------- -- -- ----- ------ -------
The Sandman 15 4 0.25 33.25 78.94%
Boz 35 10 0.14 22.42 77.77%
Aragorn 17 5 0.00 31.66 77.27%
Yukon Cornelius 20 11 0.00 -10.00 64.51%
Mr Mojo 15 9 0.00 16.66 62.50%
* - Only currently active Managers with at least 18 fights were considered.
The field consisted of 21 eligible managers.
So, the Sandman, tiptoes past Boz in taking the top spot for this past semester.
Overall, it was a fairly tight race for the top 3 spots and it's worth noting that
Boz managed second while still having more total fights than both the first and third
place managers put together.
THE BOTTOM 5 MANAGERS OF THE LAST SEMESTER
Manager W L K Rec Percent
------- -- -- ----- ------ -------
Terrablood 11 22 0.00 10.33 33.33%
"Dundee" 8 14 0.00 -6.00 36.36%
Drake 21 35 0.00 8.83 37.50%
She-Puppy 21 34 0.00 -5.40 38.18%
"Lord Gravedigger" 13 21 0.00 5.25 38.23%
* - Only currently active Managers with at least 18 fights were considered.
Now, over in the Guard, if I don't know who manages a team, I just make up a manager
name. If you want me to use your real manager name, you'll have to let me know what
it is. So, with that in mind, "Dundee" would be whoever manages Croc Files and "Lord
Gravedigger" sets up plots for Graveyard Glory.
In any case, Terrablood's the one stinking up the arena this semester, performing a
full 3% below anyone else. Yes, yes, I know. I'm on the list as well. It won't
last long, I tell you. I'll be off this list and onto the top 5 by the next Semester
Report. Just you wait and see.
THE SEMESTER ALLIANCE RECORD

League Arcane: Buddha,
Minions of Diana: Lord Andarus, Shadowgate, Umbra,
I'm certain there's more than two alliances in this arena, but I don't know who they
are or what managers are members. So, if your alliance isn't listed, let me know
what it is and who's in it. BTW, if none of the managers are eligible for Top/Bottom
five listing, their alliance won't get listed anyway, so keep that in mind when
sending me hate mail.
THE TOP 5 CITIES OF THE LAST SEMESTER

KURUKAR 21 17 0.00 3.50 55.26%
* - Only cities with at least 18 fights were considered.
The field consisted of 17 eligible cities.
Lapur manages nearly 2 wins for every 3 fights this time around, and 3% ahead of the
competition. It was also done with more total fights than any of the other top five
cities. Nicely done.

Aradi had a rough time of it this past semester, ending up nearly 9% below the next
lowest city. Not only that, but they did worse than any cities did in Home Guard
this past semester. Fortunately for you, Home Guard's worst performance is still
lower (at somewhere around 23%).

Gorboduc technically gets the top spot by not losing at all this semester. Of
course, he (she?/it?) just barely qualifies for inclusion by meeting the minimum
fight requirement. I doubt this record will stand long as a result and I'm much more
impressed by Steve Dallas's performance.

In a similar boat is Joelean, who just barely managed 6 total fights and didn't win a
single one. We'll have to wait and see if anyone out there can get more fights
without winning in a single semester. They only need seven. I suppose it's really
obvious why Caffeine Achiever is now Home Guard qualified again. Ah well.

Well, Manager just managed to blow the competition out of the water by nearly
doubling the next highest Total Recognition Average per Warrior. For the Single Turn
Average per Warrior, Boz tops the list, but doesn't look anywhere near so dominant.
Also, "Lozenge" runs Hall of Giant.

A-Sop kinda/sorta does worse than "Mr. Pink" (manager of Team Floyd). Oh, yeah, and
"Repeat" keeps Sadists II in line. For the individual turn category, "Mr. Pink" is a
full 1.5 points below Maddog and we get to see Khyron deciding he liked losing
recognition so much, he does it twice.

Andor ended up with a nice margin for error over Dwes Eg, and way ahead of the third
place city, Lapur, yet somehow never once shows up on the Single Turn list. In fact,
none of the top 5 total cities do. Seems the tortoise was right after all.

Kaltos ends up with a bit of egg on its face by being 50 points below Cliffhome.
Similarly, Bonsur wanted to make sure to be on the bottom and did so by losing 42
more points than Delarq Tor. Is it me, or are there an awful lot of Delarquan cities
represented here in Free Blades?

Chalice's commanding performance this past semester easily puts her at the top of the
Semester Recognition Total list. Ultimate Fury tried to catch up, but ended up a
full 32 points shy. Similarly, Scrooge's hoarding of 99 recognition in one turn
makes him comfortably richer than Victim of Society. You know, there's something
that just fits about Scrooge being better off than warriors named Victim of Society
and Picky Urchin.

Lysear proved that Superior Forces wasn't quite as not only is SF on the list for
most recognition lost this semester, but he couldn't even be best at it. Scrooge,
not content to top one list, goes for two by also losing the most recognition in a
single turn. Quite stingy of him, I must say.

Groggy Doggy if no one's consistent. Of course, those on the TWLF list aren't even
close to being a threat to GD. Especially Rocki Roads who made 3 appearances to play

Okay, a word of explanation on the Popularity Lists: Each turn, the person at the
bottom of the 'Other Ten Most Popular Warriors' list gets 1 point. The second to
last listed gets 2 points, and so on up to the first on the list. No points are
awarded for TWF or Pop Leader as those get separate awards. Then, those points are
averaged per turn to get the numbers above. The Least Popular List works the same
way but with negative numbers.

16 minutes is fairly long for an ADM fight (unless you're in the Guard where fights
have been known to last 1000s of minutes, but only during Manager's scumfest
contest). So, that's double the runners up, showing that Zeus has the stamina to
outlast most anyone else.

LORD REDMOND GRAHAM -13
* - Challenges by the Recognition Leader were excluded.
* - The average recognition difference for a challenge was 15.13 points.
A fairly impressive average challenge difference from the folks here at Free Blades.
It's nice to know some folks respect challenging competition.

BLACKER 33-4445 1 |
* - Manager and city kills are average kills per warrior.
Khyron the Black gets to be 'Mr. Bloodthirsty' this semester, at nearly half a kill
per warrior. Now if he could just get his gladiators to finish the job, I'd be
impressed. Sentern & Delarq Tor tied for killingest city this time out and no one
warrior managed more than a single kill.
And that wraps it up for this edition of the Semester Report. I'll see you all again
next fall.

Zukal and vicinity:
It was harder to get Veleks into the boat than Ghenis had expected. Dead, it
might have been awkward, but alive...the little thief turned suddenly hysterical,
shrieking and weeping, trashing wildly, and begging not to be given to "the burning
eyes and flashing teeth." Ghenis finally had to knock Veleks out so that he and
Harlund drag him into the rowboat.
"He's nuts," Harlund growled, leaning into his oars as he drove the boat back
toward the shore. "Burning eyes and flashing teeth. Sounds like some kind of kid's
nightmare. He do some kind of drugs?"
"Veleks? No. He's got a few bad habits, but not drugs. He must have seen
something real...but maybe not really what he thinks he saw."
"He couldn't've seen something like that, not on the beach he couldn't. There
aren't any monsters in the woods around here." Harlund paused and looked around
uneasily, looked down into the water, which was filling with the shadows of sunset
faster than the sky was. "Might be different if he'd been in a boat to start with,"
the beach walker muttered. "He might've seen something over the water...."
"Veleks can't swim and had no boat. He was not on the water," Ghenis said
firmly. "Besides, I found what are probably his tracks. He was on the shore road
and left it to run toward the beach, and I do mean run--flat out. Something
terrified him. Veleks is no hero, but he wouldn't run without a reason."
Harlund opened his mouth to argue further, then looked at Ghenis and shut it
again. Smart move.
"Just get us to shore, man. Then I'll pay you, and you can go home. It isn't
your problem."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Ghenis had the idea that it would have been harder, maybe impossible, to get rid
of Harlund at any time earlier in the day. But it was sunset, and the beach walker
seemed to have a strong aversion to being out on the shore at night. Which probably
meant that the gladiator would be wise to get himself and Veleks off the shore before
dark, too. Besides, he didn't want to meet his henchman's "burning eyes and flashing
teeth" with Veleks on his hands either unconscious or hysterical.
He draped the little thief over the saddle of his rented horse and glared at the
beast. It probably wasn't a bad horse, as horses went, but neither was it
outstanding in any way--it seemed unlikely, for instance, that it would take to
carrying double. Which meant he himself was going to have to walk. He toyed again
with the idea of buying a horse, a really GOOD horse. But, as at other times, he
also thought about how much it cost to keep a horse in the city, whether he was
riding it or not. His resources weren't infinite. And he didn't really leave the
city and NEED a horse that often, so it wouldn't be a savings, not really.
By the time Ghenis had reached this point, a familiar one, in his thoughts, it
was twilight and he was back on the coast road, leading the horse. He paused before
stepping out into the open. By the evidence of the tracks, Veleks had been on the
coast road in the dark when he met his monster. Maybe it would be better to get
under immediate cover instead of heading straight back to Zukal tonight. He'd passed
an abandoned farmstead--courtesy of the invasion, most likely--on his way to the
beach to meet Harlund. It wasn't any palace, but it would provide shelter and a
defensive position, and it was nearby, a mile, maybe a mile and a half away. He set
off in that direction, crossing the road and plunging into the brush along an
overgrown track.
The farmstead was as Ghenis remembered it, a stone house with half a roof, two
or three wooden sheds that had mostly collapsed, a cluster of unpruned fruit trees.
He led the horse right into what had been the main room of the house and dumped
Veleks onto the ground. By the dark powers, the little thief had better have
something useful to report after all this trouble! Veleks could sleep now, but by
morning he'd better be coherent.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Ghenis sat over the fire he'd made from scraps of lumber and watched the full
moon ride across the sky. The night seemed long for the time of year, but that was
subjective, he knew. It was about midnight now, with the moonlight turning the
landscape into silver and soot. There had been owls hooting earlier, some other kind
of night birds, rustlings outside the farmhouse that had nothing to do with the wind,
but the night was silent now. He touched the amulet he wore under his shirt,
wondering if he would see Veleks' monster tonight. That would be...interesting.
A howl? There were wolves around the delta country, they'd come down out of the
hills after the invaders had devastated the area. A chorus of howls, must be a pack.
His horse was moving restlessly. It had a right to be uneasy, a pack of wolves was
no joke. Ghenis wished briefly that he had a crossbow, but he didn't. He drew his
sword and put more wood on the fire, checked to make sure that the remaining walls of
the old house would protect him from the sides and rear.
Another howl, closer, almost a hound-like baying. Other wolf voices answering.
Definitely a pack, hunting in the moonlight. He touched his amulet again. The dark
powers would not protect him if he stupidly put himself in the way of danger. Which
he had not done tonight, he had prudently gotten off the road and taken a defensible
shelter. With one hand on his amulet and the other on his sword, he waited.
Shadows moved in ways that wind and trees could not account for. They gathered
around the shell of the farmhouse; he glimpsed them through the empty doorway and the
gaps in the wall. The shadows blinked at him with eyes that were not burning but
cold as the moon overhead. Wolves. Big wolves, given how far off the ground those
pale eyes were. A lot of big wolves. But they weren't trying to get at him. More
kept arriving, causing an ongoing stir of shadows. He didn't try to count them.
Didn't really want to know how many wolves there were out there.
And then, suddenly, there was something else, with eyes of flame and a spear
tipped with icy moonlight. Human in shape, more or less, and mounted on something
that might be a horse but probably wasn't. It lifted a horn and blew, and the sound
was a wave of fear.
Veleks' monster.

In the Far West:
"Shania is with the Eye of the West, that we are seeking?" Ashon Chang repeated.
He frowned at Herlas. "That sounds too easy. The Eye of the West is not where it's
supposed to be," he guessed.
"On Kurzanica? No, I don't think it is," Herlas agreed. He kept a wary eye on
Rughal, which was not difficult since the ranger had a nearly-strangling grip on the
wizard's throat. "I would guess it's somewhere on the mainland, probably in Zinaco
somewhere. But you can't interfere! The preservation of the Arcanum is essential,
anyone's life is nothing in the face of the disaster to be avert--"
Rughal closed his fingers more tightly around the Fratsfan's throat, choking him
to silence. "We don't need him anymore now, do we?" he asked almost casually.
"He might still have his uses," Ashon Chang said slowly, and Werre nodded with
him. "But we cannot trust him--"
"Did we ever?" Vurand demanded. "The thing is, we can't guard him properly
because none of us do magic. Better just to kill him." He took a step closer to
Herlas, who was helpless in the grip of both Rughal and Ashon Chang. "I'll help...
strangling him is too fast, Rughal."
"Just...? In cold blood?" Jammies asked, swallowing hard.
"Who says my blood is cold right now?" Vurand growled. The Orc flexed his large
hands and bared his fangs in a hungry grin. "Who says any of us are feeling cold
about this? Even you, boy."
Jammies opened his mouth to argue the point and stopped, staring at Rughal. The
young gladiator knew himself to be average and no more in the matter of the more
esoteric martial arts as studied in Lirith Kai, but he had training enough to realize
that he was seeing something extraordinary now. Light was emerging from the darkness
around them, swirling in a haze that shaded from gold to increasingly red, hotter and
brighter with every passing instant. The source was Rughal, the fury was Rughal's,
and Jammies wondered if the ranger intended to kill Herlas with a manifestation of
hiu. He backed away a couple of steps without realizing that he was doing it; there
didn't seem to be enough air to breathe so close to all that power.
Werre pushed past the younger Adantri and forced his way toward Rughal; he
looked like he was wading against a strong current. He grabbed Rughal's shoulder and
leaned close, saying something Jammies couldn't hear. Rughal turned his head slowly
to look at Werre. The ranger's face was quite calm, which Jammies found shocking.
Calm, but not really aware of anything beyond himself and Herlas. It seemed like a
year before Rughal's eyes actually focused on Werre. The four of them, Ashon Chang,
Herlas, Rughal, and Werre, all clustered together, were half-hidden by the steadily
thickening haze of rage, as though they were embedded in blood-colored amber.
Beside Jammies, Vurand growled. "They're going to let the damned wizard live, I
bet."
Jammies shrugged uncomfortably. "Well...I know he's no friend of ours, and he's
a wizard, and...but I don't like the idea of just killing him out of hand."
The Orc snorted. "That's what civilization does to people, makes you all soft!"
Jammies opened his mouth to refute this and was knocked from his feet and half-
deafened by an explosion. He struggled to one elbow and saw that Herlas was sprawled
on the deck, while Werre and Ashon Chang were holding Rughal backed against the low
wall of the ship's cabin. The haze of rage and hiu was gone, but there was still
anger enough in Rughal's tense posture to alarm a sensible man. Werre had one hand
clamped around Rughal's wrist to prevent the ranger from drawing his sword.
"We still need him," Ashon Chang said, his voice hard. "Without Shania, we need
him because we have no way to find the Eye of the West. We could walk right past it
and not know."
Rughal growled something that was barely words.
"You watch him, then," Ashon Chang said, "and I will help sail this boat. We
need him alive, Rughal. He is our best tool to find Lady Shania."

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Most challenged? Wow, I am flattered! Seems everyone wants to test themselves
against the best. Too bad for you losers that I got to pick my opponent this time
out. The match up against Pepe Le Funk was so lopsided that I decided to make the
fight interesting for the crowd by taking a brief nap out on the sands for the first
minute and a half. I lay there on the ground while Pepe Le Funk did his best to hurt
me. Pepe finally woke me from my nap with a couple (seven) taps. After I got back
up on my feet it only took a two quick swings to defend my title. Better luck next
time, Pepe.
I am off to the tavern; remember, Rillion's buying so come on down,
Steve Dallas, Best of the Best
P.S. Challenges went out to Raven Eyes and another one of Mojo's strikers.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
It is him, Novogrodey Vir, who spies on everybody, and I knew you didn't want
to, like, talk about it at all. Or listen to it, or, you know, whatever.
I could tell you about our cloud, which was strange and not like other clouds,
but do you want to know? Probably not. So I'll tell you about the fights instead,
and I should probably be short on account of Drake giving us a semester review. Or
maybe not, if I think of things to say. But, Drake, if you need a newsletter, ask!
We've got them. It's all in Our Chives. (And yes, this is, like, totally a strain,
which is why I only do it once every two weeks.)
We had sixty-three fights, which is not as many as last time but still more than
the other regionals, because everyone comes here instead. And thirty-six challenge
matches, unless I missed some, which I might have because of the umbrella blocking my
view sometimes. Steve Dallas got eleven challenges, which is probably the most and
is totally hyperbolic. It's the pizza. And Blackest Pride was avoided by Demons of
Darkness. I don't know why; I guess it's a manager thing. Nobody died, which is
good. If people don't die, nobody thinks the city will be destroyed, which can be,
like, totally upsetting. Two standbys fought. Some fights, not many, were action
packed, and lots and lots of fights were exciting. At least, that's what the notes
say.
So here is some of the fights, which might not be the fights you want to hear
about, but so what? Here they are. SAMOO (37-4630) (16-10-1,83) of DARKENED PRIDE
fought POINTY (16-4427) (28-22-0,56) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS.... SAMOO was overpowered by
POINTY in an exciting 1 minute mismatched fight. Why was this fight exciting? I
don't know. What is Samoo, and why? Where did it come from? Why doesn't Pointy
wear a berry? Berries are good for hiding pointy heads.
HERMES (58-6016) (14-5-0,72) of MYTHICAL fought SAMPSA (31-4233) (17-2-2,46) of
SOL INVICTUS. HERMES subdued SAMPSA in an action packed 1 minute battle. The action
was Hermes jumping around, and the wings on his sandals flapped and stirred up clouds
of sand. The arenamaster complained about it, but nobody listened. I mean, he's an
old stick in the mud, so who listens to him?
SWEET CHASTITY (35-504) (30-24-1,99) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE fought YAMA (82-11638)
(12-8-0,75) of DEATH HORDE VI. SWEET CHASTITY won victory over YAMA in an exciting 2
minute duel. I didn't think this was exciting, but all the ushers were screaming for
Sweet to take it all off, and she didn't, and Yama couldn't make her do it. So I
guess it was exciting for some people.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (17-5-0,113) of SHADOW MOD fought HELYSE (103-36) (45-
35-5,165) of Other People. BLACK ANDARUS was overpowered by HELYSE in a 1 minute
mismatched bout. I promised Helyse I would mention this even though it wasn't
exciting or action packed, because she won. She likes that.
RUNEQUEST (49-2862) (59-90-3,178) of RPG'S fought MADBULL (13-4198) (47-74-
1,165) of CARDOW HUNTERS. RUNEQUEST was viciously subdued by MADBULL in an exciting
1 minute gory bout. People get excited about strange things, have you noticed that?
Like being excited about Madbull using his horns, which I don't know why he has them,
but why not, after all? Maybe he's a mini-tar.
SNAP CRACKLE PUP (49-738) (36-31-1,189) of PETS ON FIRE fought ALI GATOR (33-
5584) (26-32-1,168) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO. SNAP CRACKLE PUP was savagely defeated
by ALI GATOR in an exciting 2 minute conflict. The Pup had a good rhythm going, you
know, snap, snap, crackle, but he just couldn't keep it up, because of Ali snapping
faster and throwing him, like, off.
STEEL CLOTH (56-1745) (91-101-3,232) of PITT GLADIATORS fought GNU WORLD ORDER
(16-3948) (58-52-3,223) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. STEEL CLOTH was overcome by GNU WORLD
ORDER in an exciting 5 minute brutal conflict. I didn't see why this one was
exciting, on account of this is when I was talking to, well, you don't need to know
who I was talking to, right? I mean, it was personal. But I missed the fight.
KOOSH BALL (71-3536) (33-20-0,215) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought CANDYACID (1-2545)
(68-67-1,195) of TASTE THE PAIN. KOOSH BALL was handily defeated by CANDYACID in an
exciting 1 minute mismatched fight. Koosh flew into the stands, and a couple of
bashers, I think they were from Home Guard, threw him back, but he didn't bounce, so
Candyacid won.
MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-1744) (38-48-4,214) of BALLROOM BLITZ fought DREHVIN (103-
34) (75-45-7,200) of Other People. MR. TESTOSTERONE demolished DREHVIN in a 1 minute
uneven conflict. Mr. said that if I mentioned Helyse winning, then I had to mention
him beating Drehvin, so I am. Mentioning.
BEERBARIAN (15-2865) (30-33-1,239) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q fought MAGE (49-2918) (63-
63-3,183) of RPG'S. BEERBARIAN savagely defeated MAGE in an action packed 2 minute
bloody duel. Beerbarian threw steins! Nines of steins. I counted. And they were
full, which was, like, totally barbaric.
And here are the challenge matches, which always seems to go faster except when
it slows me down, because these are people who do things, and it's easier to talk
about people who do things, sometimes.
MELTDOWN (32-3836) (19-3-0,81) of WOLF PACK II challenged BRANGUS (16-4162) (22-
28-1,79) of PUNNY AMINALS. Down 2. MELTDOWN overpowered BRANGUS in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. But even so, Brangus didn't go back to the bottom of the
rankings. There are lots of people below him now, so he has to lose lots of fights
to go back to the bottom.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (23-17-0,73) of CROC FILES challenged ROCKI ROADS (25-4365)
(25-26-0,73) of IVERS GIRLS. Straight across. GRAHAM demolished ROCKI ROADS in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge duel. I like rocky roads ice cream. Is it the same sort
of thing?
RUDRA (82-5565) (12-11-1,52) of DEATH HORDE IV challenged AGRO (29-4314) (20-23-
1,59) of CROC FILES. Up 7. RUDRA overpowered AGRO in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-
sided Challenge match. If Rudra wasn't using arrows, which the Commission says he
shouldn't use them, why was he CARRYING arrows? And I heard him talking about a
Croc-skin for his quiver, too, which would make ME quiver. I mean, that's so cruel,
because how can you get a tan if someone takes your skin? You have to start all over
from the beginning, with sunburns.
THE MADNESS (21-5214) (22-8-1,94) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged VENRIC (60-5709)
(17-17-0,64) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Down 30. THE MADNESS devastated VENRIC in a 1
minute uneven Challenge bout. I guess this is why Demons of Darkness were trying to
avoid Blackest Pride? I would.
FODDERER (36-5602) (21-20-0,92) of ANARKYSTS challenged SUPERIOR FORCES (33-
4543) (53-81-2,107) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Up 15. FODDERER vanquished SUPERIOR
FORCES in an exciting 3 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Which must mean Superior
isn't, but I guess being a Duplicate, which is like a carbon copy which is always
smudgy, does that.
CLOD PUNTER (66-3309) (30-36-3,150) of MAROON MIDGET challenged HOUSE MOUSE (55-
221) (104-166-2,180) of RHYME TYME. Up 30. CLOD PUNTER was overpowered by HOUSE
MOUSE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. I heard somebody, I don't know who it
was, maybe a bookie, yelling to Clod and saying something about cheese, but I didn't
catch it. I mean, if Clod said cheese, so what? Is this for the PR photos? Nine
hours of sleep is better.
TESSERACK (33-6641) (26-11-0,110) of SHADOW X challenged GRIMTHANE (16-3957)
(27-30-0,126) of THE BLACKHEARTS. Up 16. TESSERACK overpowered GRIMTHANE in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. I don't know about exciting, but this
was really strange because of Tesserack folding up Grimthane into a, well, it was
square but not exactly, and it made my eyes cross, and it only had one side which is
why the fight was one-sided, I guess.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (26-20-0,145) of SHADOWCIRCLE challenged BLINDFOLD
SKIING (55-2408) (55-80-2,141) of BAD IDEA. Down 4. SHEA MAGEBORN was overcome by
BLINDFOLD SKIING in an exciting 6 minute Challenge fight. We TELL people about
Blindfold running right over them, but they never believe it until it happens. Just
get out of the way, because he never sees you standing there, but if you move, he
always misses.
LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928) (28-22-3,164) of LUROCIANS II challenged PILLSBURY
(17-5157) (43-47-2,156) of NH INDUSTRIAL. Down 8. LORD LIGHTSPEED overpowered
PILLSBURY in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. I overpowered some sweet rolls while
this fight was going on, well, I started overpowering some sweet rolls, anyway, which
was kind of a sympathy thing.
MORROLAN (7-4400) (33-36-1,154) of DEATHSGATE challenged FRAIL WHALE (55-1968)
(97-147-3,163) of RHYME TYME. Up 9. MORROLAN was overcome by FRAIL WHALE in an
exciting 1 minute Challenge duel. There was lots of splashing, which made the
arenamaster mad, but he's like that. Who cares?
THORON (16-4094) (37-46-0,180) of THE BLACKHEARTS challenged FUNNY BUNNY (55-
1862) (79-112-1,183) of RHYME TYME. Up 3. THORON was handily defeated by FUNNY
BUNNY in a 1 minute uneven Challenge bout. The trick is that Funny has a new joke.
There were bets about this in the office, about Funny not being able to learn a new
joke even if someone tried to teach it to him. So one of the scribes in the office
said he'd try, and he did. But I don't think Funny could learn TWO new jokes.
LORD REDMOND (12-4109) (29-11-1,162) of LUROCIANS IV challenged INCISOR (64-
3639) (53-71-4,145) of MASTICATORS. Down 17. LORD REDMOND savagely defeated INCISOR
in an exciting 2 minute Challenge melee. I thought for a minute this was a TV
challenge, but then I saw it was an IV challenge, which is something else entirely.
But it worked anyway, so okay.
ANTHRAXUS (33-5723) (24-16-1,173) of DEATH HORDE challenged HEL (82-14331) (25-
24-0,181) of ARCTIC GUARDS. Up 8. ANTHRAXUS was savagely defeated by HEL in a
popular 2 minute gory Challenge duel. You know, I keep thinking I'm getting near the
end of this, and there keeps being more and more every time I look. If I don't look,
will it stop growing?
TITAN (21-5070) (32-19-1,175) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged GORBODUC (29-3991)
(17-6-0,106) of CRUEL BUT FAIR. Down a bunch, um, 69. TITAN was defeated by
GORBODUC in an exciting 2 minute Challenge duel. This was so exciting, one of the
bookies fainted. Not Carlos, one of the others. I guess because of betting on
Titan, which was a mistake.
PANIC ATTACK (9-3624) (20-11-1,153) of DSM4 challenged MILA (55-29) (48-80-
0,165) of ROCANIS RIDERS. Up 12. PANIC ATTACK devastated MILA in a popular 1 minute
one-sided Challenge bout. I knew someone who had panic attacks once. I mean, I once
knew someone who had, you know, panic attacks. He was a lifeguard at the beach, and
he had a really great tan.
ROCK A BYE (33-4653) (47-33-3,201) of EASTERN HORDE challenged MILQUETOAST (33-
5313) (58-38-2,194) of BLOOM COUNTY. Down 7. ROCK A BYE was demolished by
MILQUETOAST in a 1 minute uneven Challenge bout. The BEST toast is milque and egg
and maybe powdered sugar, or apricot jam. But you have to train for it.
PARTY'S OVER (75-2179) (34-29-0,206) of EASTERN HORDE challenged SMUG BUG (55-
2900) (35-51-0,212) of RHYME TYME. Up 6. PARTY'S OVER was viciously subdued by SMUG
BUG in a popular 2 minute Challenge bout. Which I guess means the party is NOT over.
But that's okay. Just remember to have umbrellas in all your drinks, and you'll be
fine.
CREED (64-3997) (62-41-0,190) of GROOVE MERCHANTS challenged RED HUMMER (65-
5154) (47-46-3,231) of GOOD VIBRATIONS. Up 41. CREED overpowered RED HUMMER in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. It was the wrong tune, Red. You
need one that goes zum zum zummity ZUM zum. The rhythm has to be just right.
MALICE (15-3729) (33-24-0,189) of MISCELLANEA challenged LUMP O'GORE (13-1212)
(83-75-4,198) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 9. MALICE was subdued by LUMP O'GORE in an
exciting 3 minute Challenge bout. What IS it with the cheese? I mean, Swish? Ick.
The only good thing about Swish cheese is that it's already got holes in it so you
can string it on, like, licorice shoe laces.
MIMR (82-3783) (41-32-2,199) of SOL INVICTUS challenged MICAWBER (19-3686) (36-
27-1,200) of GO TO THE DICKENS!. Up 1. MIMR bested MICAWBER in an exciting 1 minute
Challenge fight. The whole time, which was only a few seconds, so that doesn't mean
more than once, but the whole time, Micawber kept saying that something would turn
up, and it did. Mimr turned up.
WWW.QUAM.COM (82-4467) (29-31-4,191) of EASTERN HORDE 2 challenged GROGGY DOGGY
(55-223) (107-168-0,198) of RHYME TYME. Up 7. WWW.QUAM.COM overpowered GROGGY DOGGY
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. But when I put it on my spider, you know,
the web-thingee, nothing happens. Why is that?
MYMID EL NAIMIS (7-4420) (52-18-1,188) of THE DANGER DOGS challenged BLACKER
(33-4445) (58-80-3,210) of HOMES. Up 22. MYMID EL NAIMIS overpowered BLACKER in a 2
minute gruesome uneven Challenge struggle. There was, you know, grue everywhere. So
I want to remind Blacker that grue on a black robe will stain if you don't rinse it
out quick in cold water. Even if you think you can't see the stains, it makes the
robe all icky.
TESEN (12-4211) (37-30-1,209) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged CHAOS LICH (15-
4132) (36-21-0,199) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Down 10. TESEN was overcome by CHAOS LICH
in an action packed 1 minute Challenge fight. I thought a chaos lich was, like, a
demon of darkness, too?
NIRFAUNA (16-4214) (28-45-3,186) of HELPLESS ANIMALS challenged TRASH QUAM (19-
3751) (27-21-2,201) of EASTERN HORDE 3. Up 15. NIRFAUNA savagely defeated TRASH
QUAM in a popular 3 minute bloody Challenge brawl. Well, of course. Trash, you
know. This is going on for ever and ever, and I'm getting tired. I'm going to have
to stop soon, so I guess I should talk faster, right?
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (44-24-3,223) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged PENDRAGON (49-
2982) (82-66-0,280) of RPG'S. Up 57. E.A.POLECAT was bested by PENDRAGON in a crowd
pleasing 4 minute Challenge conflict. Well, you know, what did E.A. expect, huh?
It's like poking a stick at a dragon in a cage, not that anyone puts dragons in
cages, but the principle is the same.
MOJO-JOJO (12-3867) (43-35-1,228) of EASTERN HORDE challenged DR. SCUM (15-1968)
(43-44-2,230) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Up 2. MOJO-JOJO was subdued by DR. SCUM in a 1
minute Challenge match. Which is a strange fight, and I think it should have been
exciting, on account of Dr. Scum winning so fast. I mean, this is not, you know,
regular.
NIGHTSTALKER (82-5868) (34-10-0,214) of MAGIC 303 challenged AZREAL ELS III (4-
4482) (24-14-2,216) of EASTERN HORDE. Up 2. NIGHTSTALKER was overpowered by AZREAL
ELS III in a 1 minute Challenge melee. Because it was day, I suppose. Maybe
Nightstalker needs a dark arena to fight in?
WHITE KNIGHT (58-5971) (53-41-2,214) of CRUSADE challenged RAVEN EYES (12-2709)
(61-75-0,236) of SWEET MAGIC. Up 22. WHITE KNIGHT slimly won victory over RAVEN
EYES in a 2 minute Challenge fight. I'm confused about this White Knight stuff.
Shouldn't there be knights of other colors, too? I mean, white is so bland. It's,
like, boring.
And seven TV challenges, which is more than Darkholm has been using. So ha!
JOELEAN (97-903) (9-9-4,48) of IVER'S GIRLS TV challenged LOPING WOLF (56-1796)
(49-88-0,65) of REDHORSE. Up 17. JOELEAN was viciously subdued by LOPING WOLF in a
1 minute Challenge melee. That's because Joelean was slow at the door, and you know
how it is when the wolf is at the door.
PARANOIA (9-4557) (11-2-1,127) of DSM4 TV challenged DESECRATION (21-4392) (22-
12-2,129) of BLACKEST PRIDE. Up 2. PARANOIA was overpowered by DESECRATION in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. And what is, they're all out to GET Paranoia. I
can tell.
AHRINGOL (33-5726) (21-11-0,179) of DEATH HORDE TV challenged RILLION (36-5545)
(27-12-1,185) of THE CHADS. Up 6. AHRINGOL devastated RILLION in a crowd pleasing 2
minute one-sided Challenge duel. This is, you know, Ahringol tW, which is why he
didn't kill Rillion tW. Otherwise maybe he would, don't you think? Or is it too
late at night for thinking? It might be.
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (38-13-0,204) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS TV challenged PEPE LE
FUNK (60-4570) (32-26-1,206) of EASTERN HORDE. Up 2. DREAM WARRIOR defeated PEPE LE
FUNK in a crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge match. It was, you know, like a dream or
something. Did it really happen?
BANKRUPT (71-3786) (35-12-0,199) of SHADOW GOLD TV challenged SEVERUS SNAPE (18-
7146) (29-18-0,201) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN. Up 2. BANKRUPT unbelievably bested SEVERUS
SNAPE in a popular 8 minute Challenge contest. This was the longest fight, but not
very. That's because the creditors were all waiting, and Bankrupt had to leave in a
hurry.
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (38-30-0,243) of DARKMOON TV challenged FERRET INFERNO (49-
361) (37-27-2,249) of PETS ON FIRE. Up 6. WOUNDWORT overcame FERRET INFERNO in a
popular 1 minute gruesome Challenge match. I wondered why Woundwort went out with a
fire extinguisher! That was totally sneaky and, you know, wet. Or whatever. I
guess maybe not water.
ULTIMATE FURY (12-5020) (23-9-1,251) of LUROCIANS IV TV challenged SCARLATTI
(29-3867) (57-31-2,315) of CRUEL BUT FAIR. Up 64. ULTIMATE FURY devastated
SCARLATTI in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Which just SHOWS that Ultimate
Fury really IS.
And for the title of being Lord Marshall: BLACKMYTH (11-4018) (48-28-0,261) of
SHADOWS challenged STEVE DALLAS (33-5314) (62-30-0,301) of BLOOM COUNTY. Down 61 and
the loser buys the pizza. BLACKMYTH viciously subdued STEVE DALLAS in a popular 4
minute Challenge Title duel. Congratulations, somebody. And then he said ANCHOVIES
on the pizza. And pineapple, too. I need an umbrella with a drink under it.

THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN
PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Rillion -- You keep living in your fantasy world, little one. The only way you will
ever pass me in the rankings is if I quit and give my team to you to butcher the
record. The only warriors you have that can beat any of mine are the very same
warriors I was pounding with my first crop of warriors here a couple of years ago.
By your count the overall record now is 26-7 overall and 25-4 arena, my favor,
correct? -- Sylvester "I own you" Frothingslosh
Cosmo -- Welcome back? to Free Blades! -- Sylvester
Manager -- Excuses, excuses. If you want to show you are incapable of contributing
to this arena on a regular basis as a protest, go right ahead. -- Rillion
Sylvester -- 'Cause Sir Boyd isn't willing to put his money where his mouth is. I
may shoot my mouth off but at least I show up to take the beating. -- Rillion
P.S. Another for you, 26-7, sigh.
Ultimate Fury -- Hmm, you're faster then I expected. Congratulations on the
knockdown, not much of a contest when that happens so quickly. -- Milquetoast
Melkor -- That was not a very smart challenge, you been taking advice from Rillion or
something? -- Tesen
Hindenbird -- Congratulations, seems my manager is incapable of picking good
challenges. -- Severus Snape
Brangus -- Thank you! I was afraid I was going to go on a prolonged winning streak
there for a while. Fortunately Rillion knows how to pick challenges his warriors
can't win. -- Venric
The Madness -- Hmm, madness must have effected Rillion when picking out challenges
this turn. -- Hermes
Is this all, like, some kind of hint?
Azreal -- Well done. Must be nice to fight for a smart manager. -- Elroran
Gorboduc -- Congratulations! It is obvious your manager knows what he is doing. --
Zenar
Beerbarian -- I knew I was in trouble when I realized I was standing between you and
the beer seller when the fight began. I blame Rillion since he told me where to
stand. -- Tyvin
Wow, one 3-7 turn and my warriors turn on me. What a bunch of ingrates! Doesn't
anyone on my team have anything nice to say about me? -- Rillion
Rillion -- I think you are the best! -- Rillion tW
TGG -- Damn, you are ahead of me now. Time to get serious again. -- Rillion
Shadowgate -- A few more turns like the last one and I'll be the one dropping to the
right side of the newsletter. I guess the race to 55 isn't going to be over as
quickly as I had hoped. -- Rillion
Titan -- I'm glad I won that, because it would have been terribly embarrassing not
to. I suppose you have tourney fights that don't show? Or else why are you ranked
so high? -- Moonjumper
Venric -- I don't know why you were made to feel pain. Perhaps your manager is a
sadist? -- Brangus
P.S. Or there may have been some idea that if you could feel pain, you would attempt
to avoid it, by fighting better.
Thoron -- Not today, I've got a date. -- Raven Eyes, in a hurry
P.S. Actually, no, I couldn't see your black heart. If it is black, which seems
moderately unlikely.
Blacker -- Oh, damn, I HATE dying. -- Redfox
P.S. And on my feet, too. You could have given me a chance to fall down, you know.
Crypt Keeper -- Keep your crypt, I don't want it. -- Madbull
Debby -- If I didn't use my hands, I probably wouldn't win, so the issue is moot. --
Moonjumper
Oh. I'm glad you explained that. Moot, huh?
Debby -- Maybe we should slip the word to Desiree, who keeps commenting on the dearth
of TV challenges in Darkholm, that they're all over here. -- Jorja
P.S. After all, who'd want to go to Darkholm when they could be in Free Blades?
P.P.S. And we could tell the people in Andorak that the personals are all here, too.
Would they care? Would they all come here and try to get the best seats?
Royland -- I suppose the apology does you credit, but why, then, does Debby insist
that you're vicious? There is an inconsistency here, or else a very sneaky policy.
-- Moonjumper
He's vicious and sneaky.
Mymid El Naimis -- Sorry about killing you like that, but what's death like? I mean
are you kind of groping around in the dark until you hear Sheila Greywand's voice
saying, "Come to the light"? At least you're immortal and come back for more. I
remember my first kill back in Lapur. I was a young buck then eager for a
Duelmastership. A good stepping stone was this 49 fight veteran named Twist. I
challenged him and didn't try anything particularly deadly. I killed him dead. Man
did I feel guilty! The next turn the manager DA'd the rest of his team and was never
seen again and I took the Duelmastership. I've never stopped feeling guilty about
that one--but hey! that's how it works. Thanks for letting me vent. -- Scarlatti
Lump O'Gore -- Yikes! I barely made it through that one. And with a skill too! --
Woundwort
White Knight -- Solidly done. I don't think that there was anything more I could
have done. -- Mimr
Koosh Ball -- You keep getting tougher to beat, don't ya? My stablemate, Mimr, said
that I would be able to put you down and keep you there. Was he ever misinformed! --
Beag Magda
Lima Bean Flambe -- I guess you've got me all figured out. My teammates ought to be
a different story though. -- Artemisia
Meltdown -- Even though I lose, I think it was a close one. Are you planning on a
strong showing in the freshmen class at the summer F2F? -- Sampsa
Woundwort -- Sure an' that was a comeback, laddie--but ye'd best mind your first
minute in future fights. Ye all but lost it. And as for the handshake at the end,
leave off the joy buzzer! If your opponent is vertical and sufficiently conscious to
shake your hand, the graceful thing to do is to leave him in that condition! That
thing nearly stopped my heart! Skaganny! -- Lump o'Gore
Yama -- I hope you enjoy that master rating. I am an excellent teacher; you are an
adequate student. -- Loping Wolf
Smug Bug -- You're too kind. It was an honorable fight I suppose, but well fought?
I think not. I don't know where my attention was but it wasn't on the fight. --
Royland
P.S. Your aim is very good.
Severus Snape -- I stand corrected, then. I didn't know that about wit and parry
skills. -- Royland
Micawber -- They reattached my arm. I hate when things get cut off, don't you?
Anyway I guess that was a well-struck blow although it's hard to think of it that
way. -- Kelos
Peter People-Eater -- I'm glad I'm not a Peter Person. Even as a Mila Person, I had
a pretty rough time of it. I don't think I want to fight you again. -- Mila

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
