Riztab:
With all the snow of the winter just past, the lake was higher than usual. At
least two feet higher, Spymaster Torric guessed, looking at the water that now stood
waist high in the doorway of the old arena records building. He hadn't liked going
in there to hunt for old records when the water was barely up to his knees. Now...
no. No way he was going in there; anything could be hidden by that dark water.
"What idiot made the decision to leave the records down there, anyway?" Jorja,
manager of Sweet Magic, asked. "It's so stupid!"
Torric shrugged. "Gladiators and managers don't have the copyright on stupid,"
he said mildly. "I'm not sure if it was Arenamaster Rillion or First Citizen Makrok
who made the decision, but the other one concurred in it."
"Sounds like maybe the both had something to hide," Garfield, manager of Arena
Felines, murmured. "I wonder what?"
"Don't we all," Torric responded. That Rillion tA and Makrok should have a
secret they had succeeded in hiding offended him. He was supposed to be able to find
things out, and so far he hadn't scratched the surface on that.
"Are the records even THERE?" Garfield asked. "Maybe Rillion tA just said
they're stored down here to keep you from finding out that they're gone."
"They were here a little while ago." Torric frowned. "Four years? Five?
Something like that, I think--but I know the records still existed back then,
whenever, because I consulted them to find out about the earliest teams here. For
Sleepy, that was. Then something came up--the invasion, I think? Anyway, I didn't
go back. But--" He jumped as a crazy howl floated over the water. "I hate coming
here so late in the day," he muttered, glancing anxiously to the west. The sun was
slipping behind a bank of clouds.
"If somebody's messing around in the records storage, late in the day is the
time to watch for him. Be glad we can't see in the dark and watch after sunset!"
Jorja advised.
"Huh. I wish now I hadn't mentioned that Jaguar saw someone down this way."
Garfield eyed the dark water with disfavor. "Better I should have stayed at the
guildhouse and whacked him a couple of times for wandering around where he shouldn't
be."
The howl came again, from far out over the lake. A chorus, several voices
saluting the coming night.
"Loons," Torric said uneasily. "We always have some loons on this lake.
Horrible birds."
"It sounds more like wolves to me," Jorja countered, "or even hounds."
"Not on the lake!"
"I know, but--"
Another chorus of howls, this time accompanied by a deep-throated hunting horn.
"It IS hounds!" Garfield backed up a couple of steps. "I don't like dogs."
"And I don't like anything that can hunt on the surface of the lake," Jorja
agreed. She backed up with him. Spymaster Torric was already behind them and edging
farther back. "But I'd like to know what it is."
"It's us cats that are supposed to be curious," Garfield reminded her.
"Yeah, but it kills you cats. Don't want that--who'd I have to talk to?" She
stiffened, staring out over the water intently. With the sun sinking into the clouds
and the forest shadowing the lake anyway, it was hard to be sure, but she thought
something--bigger than any water bird--was moving out there.
The horn blew once more, a long note with more chilling menace in it than
anything either manager had heard. The horn call was backed by the baying of the
unnatural pack. The twilight took the shape of a pack of tall hounds and three lean
horsemen sweeping forward across the glassy surface of the water.
"They're headed for the old records building," Garfield noted in a steady voice.
"I don't think I want to hang around to welcome them."
"Right." Jorja joined his retreat. She shivered a little in the night air.
"This calls for strong drink in a warm, crowded tavern."

Ibizond, Korga, and in between:
The sun was low in the sky, less than an hour from setting, Fist of Kjarran
calculated. He glanced at his companions, a hastily assembled group of gladiators
from Murska and hunters from Ibizond. They had all heard of the killer that stalked
this stretch of road at night--Cadal had insisted on telling them, just to make sure
they all knew, which Fist thought was a mistake--and they were nervous. Well, it was
time for them to turn back, and their numbers should protect them from attack.
Cadal, with Aghatamar and Zilla, were somewhere ahead, waiting in ambush to attack
the killer if the killer attacked him, Fist of Kjarran. Not a bad plan, he conceded
privately, even if it had come from a Murskan semi-barbarian. The man was almost as
good as a true Karnhorn in his thinking.... But Cadal hadn't taken into account the
possibility that the killer might take one look at him and sheer off. Fist caressed
the hilt of the sword at his side. Even if the killer had never heard of him, the
Lord Protector knew that he was an impressive, even daunting, sight. A stir among
his companions drew his attention outward again.
"About time we turned back," one of the men said. He seemed to be the leader,
what was his name...Finn, that was it. "Most of these people aren't Lord Protectors,
and if the killer gets them, they're just plain dead."
Fist nodded. "Yes, you should have time to get back to Ibizond before dark," he
agreed. "And we certainly don't need more deaths along here."
They all came to a stop. "Thing is, I don't like leaving you on your own," Finn
went on. He looked uncomfortable about the whole situation, but of course he had no
belief in Kjarran to sustain him. "I could stay...."
"A generous offer," Fist responded, clapping him on the back. It was good to be
reminded that even non-believers had courage and honor. "But I'm supposed to be
alone, to be tempting bait for the killer. That is the way it's planned, you know.
We can't change the plan at this late hour!"
"I know," Finn agreed gloomily, "but I don't like it. Well...I guess we turn
back now. Good luck!" He gestured to his group, and they turned back readily, even
eagerly, toward Ibizond, sturdy walls, lights, and companionship. With a last
salute, Finn followed them, leaving Fist of Kjarran alone on the road.
Fist of Kjarran watched them go and smiled to himself as he turned to go toward
Korga. That was the best thing about adventures; you made new friends, met good
people you would never have encountered in your regular life. Doing this service for
the people of the area, ridding the road of its killer, was a good thing, a worthy
effort, but making new friends was a warmer pleasure. Whistling, he strode eastward
toward the prepared ambush.
Near Malcorn:
Blackie, Lord Malcorn of Malcorn, stood next to the ancient stone and waited for
the moon to rise. It would be full tonight, and he knew, because he knew most of the
natural world around Malcorn, that when it reached a certain height above the
horizon, it would shine through the hole in a more distant rock and strike squarely
onto the face of the rock beside him, revealing carvings that had been old when the
first Lord Malcorn came to this land. The records of his ancestors said that the
Dregur were accustomed to gathering here when the moon was just so.
"I must be insane," Tiljanz muttered behind him.
"Courage and a sense of responsibility often looks like madness," Blackie
agreed, "even to the people exhibiting it. You didn't have to come here tonight, but
you felt it was the right thing to do. I can respect that in a man. A lot."
"Will it do any good?" the young Karnhorn asked curiously. "We've turned the
Dregur loose, and I'd think it hard if not impossible to rein them back in."
"We turned them loose under terms," Blackie said. His voice hardened, becoming
the voice of the Lord of Malcorn. "They have not kept those terms. They were to
attack only those who came here following Inzolas. That a few innocents might get
caught in that net by accident was...almost inevitable. But some of the Dregur have
been actively hunting those not indicated by the terms of their release." He was
silent for a long moment, then shrugged. "I'm not certain that we can put an end to
these...excesses. But I am very certain that if we don't protest, the situation will
become worse. A failure to protest will be seen as an admission of weakness."

Rithakar:
Onuphre had disarmed the man and was now holding him in an iron grip to prevent
him bleeding to death from the stump. Seeing that he had his companions' attention
again, the Shew said, "I thought we might want to ask this fellow some questions."
"What an excellent idea!" Tamea Soulkeeper purred. She moved closer to the
Shew's prisoner and examined him curiously. "He appears to be of a race unknown in
Alastari," she murmured, then glanced at the blood leaking from the stump of the
man's arm. It was an unusual shade of red, almost coppery. "Of an unknown species
entirely. I wonder where the Folstrom found him?"
"Stop wondering and ask your questions," Onuphre suggested. "He isn't going to
last long, as much blood as he's lost."
Tamea gave the Shew a look that would have put a dagger to shame for sharpness
and addressed a brisk question to the prisoner in a language none of the other
gladiators recognized.
The man stared at her blankly, then mumbled a few words.
The witch frowned and rapped out another question in what sounded like a
different language.
The man shook his head feebly.
"Those other people make my head spin," Debby Tonte announced. She was glaring
at the main body of lancers, who were still rippling and fading in and out of
solidity. "They make me feel like I forgot the umbrella in my drink, or, you know,
no olives. I don't like it."
Bellerophon and Mr. Testosterone turned to look at the larger group again. It
didn't appear to offer much danger, if the lancers couldn't even rejoin the active
universe.
"That sphere the banner-man is carrying!" Mr. Testosterone said suddenly.
"Could that be the Eye we're looking for?"
Ultraist* squinted at it and nodded once. "It could be," the big Aruaki
admitted. "It looks pretty much the way the Eye looked--if it was the Eye--when I
saw it last. But how would they come to have it?"
"If that's the Eye of the South," Bellerophon answered briskly, "it doesn't
matter how they got it. We have to get it back."
This declaration gathered the attention of the whole group that had originally
set out from the Isle. After the delays and disappointments experienced so far, the
possibility of actually being able to accomplish their task was invigorating.
"How do we get it from them?" E.A. Polecat demanded. "They aren't all here, I
mean, they're not in this world completely, and if they can't touch us, we can't
touch them, right?"
"We can get right in among them with our swords drawn," Skirnir suggested.
Holding his blade at the ready, he moved forward as he spoke.
The others rushed to join him, out of loyalty and duty and from a simple desire
to have, finally, a clear fight that they could win. Because they were going to win.
At their near approach, the lancers seemed to get a firmer grip on reality and become
solid, or nearly so, but at the same time many of them began to age with appalling
swiftness, as though all the years they had slept through were falling on them at
once. Skirnir, who found himself paired with Black Skull, the retired Rocani Lord
Protector, headed for the banner man who had what was probably the Eye of the South.
Bellerophon and Natasha Knight targeted the leader of the troop, and the other
gladiators spread out to do as much damage as they could.
The man with the banner and the Eye shouted when he found himself beset by two
warriors, and others rallied to his side, including the leader. The battle was brief
but fierce, the end inevitable. Though they had the advantages of numbers and of
being mounted, the lancers were weary and confused, and when one of them took a
deadly wound, he rapidly collapsed into a pile of bones that crumbled to dust.
Black Skull looked over the seen of the battle, shaken. Nothing remained of the
men they'd fought, who had fought them with the fierceness of desperation, but dust
drifting away on the wind, and a few pieces of age-weakened metal--spearheads, a
helmet or two, a buckle.... "That was..." he shook his head, unable to think of a
word to describe his feeling.
"It was as bad, in its way, as though we'd lost," Bellerophon said grimly. "But
we won." He stepped carefully through the dust to the spherical stone, white and
dead as the moon, that might be all that remained of the Eye of the South.
"Better not to touch it!" Ultraist advised, coming up beside him.
"Right! Remember what it did to that poor dragon!" Debby Tonte added, joining
them. She rummaged in her straw bag and pulled out a large towel. "Roll it into
this, so you can carry it safely. We can take it back to HER, and then forget about
it. And the sooner the better, too!"
*Ultraist is now known as Sylvester Frothingslosh.

Talahya?
Scarlatti knelt on the stony beach and scooped a hand through the water, sniffed
it, then touched his tongue to it. "Salt. This is weird. Only something really
strange could change a freshwater, inland lake to salt water."
"Unless," Fizban repeated, "it's not the lake we remember."
"Well, that'd be pretty strange, too."
Rogan cleared his throat. "That isn't all that's strange," the blind man said.
"You sense it, too?" Moonjumper asked. "But of course, you would--"
"We aren't in Talahya," Rogan confirmed. "At least, in no part of Talahya I've
ever encountered, and we were walking a known route. I sense a different pattern of
buildings and open spaces around us."
"We passed through some sort of Gate," Moonjumper added. "I sense quite a
different pattern of energies around us, as well. So what do we do now?" She turned
to Fizban and Carris Fallstar. "How do we go about investigating...whatever it is
that makes this not the Isle?"
Before the old wizard could answer, Carris said, "We were headed for the ferry
docks on the Isle, and we've come to a shore. Maybe there are ferries near here.
Let's find 'em."
"Why?" Scarlatti asked.
"Why not?" the elf countered. "It's a place to start."
Lirin Kiv?
The town that finally emerged from the fog bore some resemblance to Lirin Kiv,
but it was definitely not the Adantri town. The architecture they could see was
similar in style, but different in detail, the streets were laid out in different
curves and lined with different trees, some of them totally unfamiliar to Shylock and
Clemenda. Where the Temple of Mantor should have been was a temple to...somebody
else. By the symbols on the facade, some kind of solar deity, Shylock thought.
The carriage came to a stop, and the driver dismounted again, to peer anxiously
through the window at his passengers. "I don't know where we are," he admitted, "but
it's nowhere I've been before. Now what?"
"See if there's anything like an arena here," Shylock ordered. "If there is,
it'll be a point of contact, I think."
"Where do I look?"
Shylock bit back an exasperated comment which wouldn't help. The man was
stupid, but it would do no good to rub his nose in that dismal fact. "Look where you
would expect to find the Lirin Kiv arena, if this were Lirin Kiv and that was the
Temple of Mantor."
The driver clambered back onto his perch and set the horses in motion.
"Something this strange, Lady Sheila would have to know about it, wouldn't she?"
Clemenda asked. "I've always understood that she knows about every bit of magic
that's performed on the Isle."
"Maybe she's not paying attention," Shylock answered. His eyes gleamed at the
possibilities opened up by Sheila not paying attention. "She's got other things on
her mind, I suppose--the decline in the Arcanum and all that...." He frowned
slightly. "Wherever we are, THIS Arcanum hasn't declined!"

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hail, Free Blades!
It is an honor to be the first warrior of Shadowgate's to make it to the throne
here. He was amazed as he though Nemesis would be the one! I have to admit that I
was surprised to as I am not nearly as developed as most of the CC in this arena. We
will see if I can stick here another turn. S.D., you are just too slow for me and
fall into those who I am most effective against.
-- Blackmyth
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
It is totally, and I mean TOTALLY too hot! Like, you know the notes the scribes
make about challenges and stuff? They make them on these wax tablets, which I think
is dumb but they say erasing paper to use it over again is too much work and it's too
expensive to not use it over again, and the same for, you know, parchment. Did you
know parchment is animal skin? That is totally gross! What if animals made notes on
people skin? Anyway, they use these wax tablets, which are actually wood with, like,
wax frosting. And it was so hot, the wax melted, and I can't read all the notes, I
think. Or maybe not. Anyway, too hot. And smoky, because of a lot of people
burning up forests, which is wasteful. I mean, if they didn't burn up forest, then
paper, which is made out of trees, which I think is Very Strange but what do I know,
then paper wouldn't be so expensive and the scribes could use it instead of was
tablets. Right?
Well, some stuff about the fights, because of HER liking it if I say stuff.
About the fights. Blackest Pride was avoided by somebody. Wait, let me find that
note. Dsm4 avoided them. I don't know why. Nobody tells me these things. Lump
O'Gore was most challenged, and it served him RIGHT, because he didn't do personals
AGAIN or any of his teammates. We had sixty fights which is too many *I* think but
not as many as last time, and half were challenge matches, so somebody is paying
attention. Lots of somebodys. The Lord Marshall wrote a column, which is, you know,
totally cool. I like it when that happens. I don't know why, but it just makes me
feel good, you know? But not feeling so good is seeing that one warrior died a
little today. It's especially bad because of the heat, of course. The longest fight
was nine minutes, so it's no wonder the wax melted. I mean, nine minutes? This is
not, you know, good sense. You could get a sunburn in nine minutes. Or a heat
stroke.
Anyway, here's some of the fights. Not all, because of the wax melting, but
some of them.
NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821) (15-12-0,50) of BLADES OF WONDER fought ZENAR (12-
4043) (18-18-1,88) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. NEBUCHADNEZZAR lost to ZENAR in an
exciting 1 minute contest. This makes Zenar have a winning record, which gladiators
always tell me is a good thing to have. I think it's unbalanced and, you know,
lopsided, but you all like it.
LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (23-24-0,93) of LUROCIANS II fought AGRO (29-4314) (20-
24-1,46) of CROC FILES. LORD FIREFLASH vanquished AGRO in an exciting 1 minute one-
sided duel. I always like fireworks, you know. Except when they set forests on
fire, of course, which I already told you I think is, like, totally dumb. But
fireworks are better than HER lightning, *I* think.
LIMA BEAN FLAMBE (70-3118) (27-16-0,132) of HEAVE HO! fought HELYSE (103-36)
(45-35-5,165) of Other People. LIMA BEAN FLAMBE was demolished by HELYSE in a 1
minute uneven duel. Well, you know, not many people like lima beans. I mean, beans?
And they're flat and, you know, like flour or something. Ick. Lots of people liked
to see Lima get demolished. I only mentioned this one, if you want to know, because
of Helyse asking me to, and I'm, you know, always glad to do it if somebody asks.
Anybody.
REDFOX (13-4197) (40-54-0,173) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought ARTEMISIA (12-5096) (27-
26-0,126) of DARKMOON. REDFOX was savagely defeated by ARTEMISIA in an action packed
4 minute brutal fight. Have you noticed how Redfox seems to always lose to women?
And men, too, I guess, but I don't notice that. Or maybe it's women that mostly
challenge him, except for this not being a challenge match. Maybe it's something the
Handicapper worked out with the Bookies. I mean, you hear a lot about random, and
you know, fair, but do you see it much?
JULIUS (64-3641) (64-69-2,172) of UNDER DURESS fought LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928)
(29-22-3,172) of LUROCIANS II. JULIUS was overcome by LORD LIGHTSPEED in an exciting
2 minute contest. I'm kind of surprised this one took two minutes, on account of
somebody told me once that light was very, very fast, and two minutes doesn't seem
fast to me. Well, sometimes, okay, like trying to catch the Shuttle and being late,
but they always wait for me, so it's okay.
ROYLAND (56-3380) (51-41-0,188) of REDHORSE fought NIGHTIE KNIGHT (12-4731) (39-
23-1,157) of LOBOTOMATION. ROYLAND bested NIGHTIE KNIGHT in an exciting 1 minute
bloody match. Viciously, too. I could tell. He's like that, even though he, you
know, seems so sweet at first. But it's because of being Mila's son, and Mila is,
you know, a caravan raider, and they're all vicous. Totally. And he doesn't write
personals because he can't reboot it.
HINDENBIRD (49-1277) (35-18-0,196) of PETS ON FIRE fought MOONRACER (50-3206)
(33-25-1,203) of MISFIT TOYS. HINDENBIRD unbelievably bested MOONRACER in an
exciting 3 minute bloody conflict. This was, like, awful. Totally barbaricue, on
account of Hindenbird's tail being on fire the whole time. If we had a forest here,
it would probably be burning. Besides, burning feathers don't smell good. I mean,
you can't help but notice, right?
KOOSH BALL (71-3536) (33-21-0,188) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought MADBULL (13-4198)
(48-74-1,180) of CARDOW HUNTERS. KOOSH BALL savagely defeated MADBULL in an action
packed 2 minute gory fight. I always like when Madbull stomps around and bellows. I
don't know why, just exciting, I guess. Like a play. Or maybe an opera, except that
he isn't in, you know, tune.
MICAWBER (19-3686) (36-28-1,197) of GO TO THE DICKENS! fought HOUSE MOUSE (55-
221) (105-166-2,183) of RHYME TYME. MICAWBER subdued HOUSE MOUSE in an action packed
2 minute bloody conflict. With a broom. Whack whack whackity whack. I laughed. I
mean, it was totally hillirious.
RAVEN EYES (12-2709) (61-76-0,199) of SWEET MAGIC fought ALI GATOR (33-5584)
(27-32-1,190) of DRAKE'S PETTING ZOO. RAVEN EYES overpowered ALI GATOR in an action
packed 1 minute bloody uneven battle. This is petting with a sword, right? Does
alley gator make boots like crock? Only different, of course, but still, kind of
like?
BLACKER (33-4445) (58-81-3,193) of HOMES fought BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (38-23-
2,210) of DARKMOON. BLACKER was savagely defeated by BEAG MAGDA in an action packed
2 minute competition. Well, the notes SAY there was a lot of, you know, action, but
I couldn't see it. I mean, probably, because of the crowd roaring like, well,
something that roars, maybe surf or something. But I was doing my last nail, and I
couldn't look away or it would get smeared. Smeared nails are totally low class.
BLADE RUNNER # (33-4544) (78-57-4,216) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought TYVIN (60-
5382) (41-32-0,183) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. BLADE RUNNER # savagely defeated TYVIN
in an exciting 2 minute bloody match. But he didn't kill him or, whatever, it.
Which is good, because of Blade Runner killing to many people here in Free Blades,
even if it IS only temporary. I mean, what if seven or nine or whatever die, and the
city is destroyed? What a mess!
DR. SCUM (15-1968) (44-44-2,239) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q fought SCARLATTI (29-3867)
(57-32-2,194) of CRUEL BUT FAIR. DR. SCUM was demolished by SCARLATTI in an exciting
2 minute gruesome mismatched match. I watched this one, because I think Scarlatti
is, like, totally cute!
Oh, here are the challenge matches. Good, that's half way, except that I didn't
talk about all the other fights that weren't challenge matches. Oh, well. Still.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (24-17-0,83) of CROC FILES challenged POINTY (16-4427) (29-22-
0,84) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS.... Up 1. GRAHAM was savagely defeated by POINTY in an
exciting 2 minute bloody Challenge fray. I think today is probably not a good day
for alley gators OR crocks.
SAMOO (37-4630) (16-11-1,61) of DARKENED PRIDE challenged BRANGUS (16-4162) (22-
29-1,74) of PUNNY AMINALS. Up 13. SAMOO overpowered BRANGUS in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge bout. Well, you know, lots of people beat Brangus, almost as many as beat
Madbull, or maybe more. I think he made a, you know, career error.
VENRIC (12-4040) (16-7-1,77) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged THE BIG MEOW (21-
5307) (16-3-0,87) of MEOW MIX. Up 10. VENRIC was outlasted by THE BIG MEOW in a
popular 9 minute Challenge match. This is, like, Venric I. And the longest fight.
I think he just got too hot after a while and quit. I would've.
ROCKI ROADS (25-4365) (25-27-0,65) of IVERS GIRLS challenged SUPERIOR FORCES
(33-4543) (53-82-2,90) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Up 25. ROCKI ROADS was vanquished
by SUPERIOR FORCES in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. Is it because of Rocki
being Andorian? I mean, we should be curly to guests, or something, right? But why
is Rocki a girl? I thought it was a, like, guy. With boxes.
MELTDOWN (32-3836) (20-3-0,91) of WOLF PACK II challenged VENRIC (60-5709) (17-
18-0,66) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Down 25, I think. MELTDOWN vanquished VENRIC in a
popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. This is Venric II, right? And faster. I
would've thought One would be faster, but that's just the way it goes.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (17-6-0,119) of SHADOW MOD challenged LORD REDMOND (12-
4109) (30-11-1,166) of LUROCIANS IV. Up 47. BLACK ANDARUS savagely defeated LORD
REDMOND in an exciting 2 minute Challenge fray. I wasn't excited, I was, like,
totally disappointed because of hoping Lord Andarus would come. He's the cutest
manager! But he didn't. But there are, you know, lots of cute managers, so it's
okay. Just, I kind of hoped he might drop by.
TESSERACK (33-6641) (27-11-0,129) of SHADOW X challenged FRAIL WHALE (55-1968)
(98-147-3,167) of RHYME TYME. Up 38. TESSERACK viciously subdued FRAIL WHALE in an
action packed 4 minute Challenge bout. You know, I don't think Whale is Frail at
ALL! I think it's just a JOKE. Or a, you know, sneer and a delusion.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (26-21-0,141) of SHADOWCIRCLE challenged CLOD PUNTER
(66-3309) (30-37-3,148) of MAROON MIDGET. Up 7. SHEA MAGEBORN won victory over CLOD
PUNTER in a popular 4 minute Challenge fight. Hum! I just noticed that nobody in
this fight is from here! I mean, they're from here now, but they weren't in the
beginning. Not that we mind. Just noticing, you know?
GRIMTHANE (16-3957) (27-31-0,112) of THE BLACKHEARTS challenged RUNEQUEST (49-
2862) (59-91-3,166) of RPG'S. Up 54. GRIMTHANE vanquished RUNEQUEST in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge match. I bet Rpg is upset, but does Coeur even notice? Would he
notice if I spelled is name, you know, wrong? I mean, it's been years.
CATATONIC (9-4649) (27-15-0,141) of DSM4 challenged BLINDFOLD SKIING (55-2408)
(56-80-2,154) of BAD IDEA. Up 13. CATATONIC was overpowered by BLINDFOLD SKIING in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. I don't think it was fair for Skiing to take a
dog into the arena. I mean, okay, so he can't see, is that Cat's fault? Only the
dog chased Cat Atonic around and around, and in this heat!
PANIC ATTACK (9-3624) (21-11-1,170) of DSM4 challenged THORON (16-4094) (37-47-
0,171) of THE BLACKHEARTS. Up 1. PANIC ATTACK was handily defeated by THORON in a 1
minute uneven Challenge duel. Well, you know what they say, I mean, some of them say
it, but not all. Be calm. This is supposed to be a good thing, better than panic.
MORROLAN (7-4400) (33-37-1,151) of DEATHSGATE challenged GORBODUC (29-3991) (18-
6-0,156) of CRUEL BUT FAIR. Up 5. MORROLAN was savagely defeated by GORBODUC in an
exciting 1 minute gory Challenge duel. This is Scarlatti's sidestep, right? I mean,
the one beside him. Or his hunchman. Or, um, something or other. This is kind of
blurred.
GREW SOME SHREW (16-4135) (45-39-2,192) of HELPLESS ANIMALS challenged FUNNY
BUNNY (55-1862) (80-112-1,193) of RHYME TYME. Up 1. GREW SOME SHREW overpowered
FUNNY BUNNY in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. What is the shew, I mean,
shoe thing? I mean, we have alley gator shews, shoes, and crock shews, and now bunny
slippers, and it's too HOT for this stuff. Besides, the fluff makes me sneeze.
MELKOR (13-1821) (30-11-0,182) of SILMARILLIAD challenged MOONJUMPER (16-3062)
(53-84-1,191) of PUNNY AMINALS. Up 9. MELKOR beat MOONJUMPER in a 2 minute
Challenge match. I think they maybe did this before, but, you know, what else is
there? I mean, you can't challenge someone who isn't there, and if you're there all
the time, you just fight the same people lots of times. Which it sounds kind of
strange sometimes, because of Moonjumper asking after Melkor's wife and kids before
the fight, and Melkor promising his special recipe for stewed livers, and, you know,
old friend stuff. But you shouldn't stew liver. Really. Slice it thin and fry it
with onions and an umbrella in it.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (29-19-0,203) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN challenged NIGHTSTALKER
(82-5868) (34-11-0,194) of MAGIC 303. Down 9. SEVERUS SNAPE beat NIGHTSTALKER in an
exciting 1 minute Challenge match. I heard this was some kind of GRUDGE, on account
of Nightstalker sneaking around the House at, you know, night, and doing things he
shouldn't be doing. Because if he should be doing them, he wouldn't need to sneak
around at night, after all.
RED HUMMER (65-5154) (47-47-3,191) of GOOD VIBRATIONS challenged ULTIMATE FURY
(12-5020) (24-9-1,277) of LUROCIANS IV. Up lots. Umm, 86. RED HUMMER was butchered
by ULTIMATE FURY in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Gee, I guess this wasn't
such a good idea, Red. I won't give you dried flowers like Galen does, because
they're too itchy and besides, they just smell like dust. But I hope you have a good
resurrection.
PETER PEOPLE-EATER (77-2609) (46-22-1,195) of MOTHERGOOSEONHALDOL challenged
LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (84-75-4,209) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 14. PETER PEOPLE-EATER
viciously subdued LUMP O'GORE in a 1 minute Challenge duel. This is, like, strange.
Because of the notes said about Lump starting a fast food joint, which I don't like
fast food, because it's always better to take your time and digest, you know? But
Peter bit him and was all set to eat him up, except for the arenamaster stopping him.
TESEN (12-4211) (37-31-1,199) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged STEEL CLOTH (56-
1745) (91-102-3,200) of PITT GLADIATORS. Up 1. TESEN was handily defeated by STEEL
CLOTH in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. Well, you know, you have to be careful
because of Steel being totally experienced and, you know, not a pushover. If you
want to push him over. I don't know why somebody would, but people always say that.
STEVE DALLAS (33-5314) (62-31-0,201) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged MIMR (82-3783)
(42-32-2,211) of SOL INVICTUS. Up 10. STEVE DALLAS savagely defeated MIMR in a
popular 3 minute bloody Challenge brawl. This was funny, and kind of a surprise too.
I mean, you expect people to throw cream pies, which is why I never have that kind
because it's too hard to eat them on the, you know, fly. But I never saw them
throwing pizza pies, except it was only Steve throwing pies, because Mimr didn't have
any. And anyway, I thought it was Carny who was supposed to throw pies.
WHITE KNIGHT (58-5971) (54-41-2,220) of CRUSADE challenged MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-
1744) (39-48-4,239) of BALLROOM BLITZ. Up 19. WHITE KNIGHT slimly won victory over
MR. TESTOSTERONE in a 6 minute conflict. White may be slim, which is okay, slim is
good. But Mr. has muscles, which is also good. I mean, I like a date that can carry
me over a mud puddle if there happens to be one. In the road or wherever we're
walking, not that goes LOOKING for a mud puddle and then insists on carrying me over
it. Royland did that once. But he's like that.
MILQUETOAST (33-5313) (59-38-2,215) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged PENDRAGON (49-
2982) (83-66-0,298) of RPG'S. Up 83. MILQUETOAST overpowered PENDRAGON in an
exciting 2 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Oh! This is the last fight I have to
talk about, because of starting at both ends. Good. I'm sleepy, and, you know, hot,
too. I had a dragon pen once. It lit up, with little flames, you know, and burned
the paper, just like a forest. So I didn't keep it.
Eight TV challenges! They don't have this many going in Darkholm, so there!
JOELEAN (97-903) (9-10-4,47) of IVER'S GIRLS TV challenged LOPING WOLF (56-1796)
(50-88-0,67) of REDHORSE. Up 20. JOELEAN vanquished LOPING WOLF in an action packed
2 minute uneven Challenge fight. Not killing Loping is good, Joelean, because of
whatever it was trying to say here but it is kind of smudged. Oh, learning control.
Okay. Do you want to learn control? Some don't.
HAYSEED X-IV (82-6120) (14-7-1,100) of PROJECT HAYSEED TV challenged SWEET
CHASTITY (35-504) (31-24-1,101) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE. Up 1. HAYSEED X-IV overpowered
SWEET CHASTITY in a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. I don't think we should talk
about this one in, you know, public.
SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (17-2-0,99) of CASTLE BLACK TV challenged INCISOR (64-
3639) (53-72-4,150) of MASTICATORS. Up 51. SETHRA LAVODE devastated INCISOR in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. And broke his teeth, even! That was sooo dental!
PARANOIA (9-4557) (11-3-1,121) of DSM4 TV challenged FODDERER (36-5602) (22-20-
0,113) of ANARKYSTS. Down 8. PARANOIA devastated FODDERER in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge duel. He SAID that Fodderer was out to get him. I didn't know that. Why?
Or do anarkysts not have reasons? I mean, if they don't have reasons, okay, I
wouldn't want to, like, FORCE a reason. But if he has a reason, I just, you know,
wondered.
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (44-25-3,202) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q TV challenged MYMID EL
NAIMIS (7-4420) (53-18-1,205) of THE DANGER DOGS. Up 3. E.A.POLECAT overpowered
MYMID EL NAIMIS in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. I heard one of the ushers,
who are mostly cute but sometimes just a little, you know, dumb, saying about Edgar
Allen being stinky, but it isn't true. I mean, I know, because of the adventure
together. He washes as much as anybody and more than SOME I might name, only I
won't.
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (39-30-0,254) of DARKMOON TV challenged VALKYRIE (17-5544)
(70-46-0,255) of ARCTIC GUARDS. Up 1. WOUNDWORT was vanquished by VALKYRIE in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Why are there no notes about this? How can I say
anything without notes? I mean, am I supposed to REMEMBER all this stuff? As if!
BANKRUPT (71-3786) (36-12-0,212) of SHADOW GOLD TV challenged CHAOS LICH (15-
4132) (37-21-0,212) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Straight across. BANKRUPT overcame CHAOS
LICH in a popular 2 minute Challenge match. I heard about bankrupting being in
Chapter Eleven, but I'm glad this didn't take eleven minutes. Maybe they're very
short chapters.
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (39-13-0,213) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS TV challenged
CANDYACID (1-2545) (69-67-1,216) of TASTE THE PAIN. Up 3. DREAM WARRIOR was
devastated by CANDYACID in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge fight. This is, like, a
warning, about how some dreams are nightmares and stuff. So be careful what you
dream about.
GNU WORLD ORDER (16-3948) (59-52-3,231) of HELPLESS ANIMALS challenged BLACKMYTH
(11-4018) (49-28-0,285) of SHADOWS. Up 54. GNU WORLD ORDER narrowly defeated
BLACKMYTH in a 3 minute Challenge Title fight. A challenge for the Lord Marshall!
This is good, people will be impressed because of it showing something or other. I
forget what. But congratulations anyway.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Rillion -- 27-7 my favor. Maybe it would be more lopsided if you weren't avoiding me
like the plague. Maybe I'll just avoid you too. -- Sylvester F.
Moonjumper -- Of course I have tournament experience. But the reason you won is that
I'm trying to get a little lower in the rankings so I can punish a certain manager...
-- Titan
You could, you know, lose fights.
Hermes -- No one ever accused Rillion of being a glowing orb of wisdom. -- The
Madness
Rillion -- Ok, that didn't go as well as the turn before but you're still in reverse,
so I am catching up on you! :P -- Shadowgate
Scarlatti -- Nemesis tried to pay you back for me but Ultimate Fury got to you first.
Oh well. -- M.E.N.
Mimr -- Thanks. Hopefully I can do something in Eligibles this time out! -- White
Knight
Throw a party?
Severus Snape -- Sorry, I just couldn't pass up a chance to tweak your nose! --
Bankrupt
Azreal Els III -- Nice one! Maybe next time! -- Nightstalker
Helyse -- I like stand-ins like you! The ones that can teach! -- Black Andarus
Thank you, sir. I like a good student, too. -- Helyse
Drake -- Thanks for the excellent report! -- Rillion
Sylvester -- I remember you telling me you did want to go after my 'fight thrower'
yet you challenged Venric again. I'll repeat again, all my warriors are now trying
to win, except for Venric. Having said that I still expect you will challenge him
and then gloat about it as usual. -- Rillion
P.S. 27-7.
Bankrupt -- Your name is an apt description of the courageousness of your challenge.
-- Severus Snape
Ahringol tW -- The outcome of our fight is about what I would expect if our namesakes
had fought instead. -- Rillion tW
Blackmyth -- Good fight. I expect you to buy the beer in exchange for me throwing
that fight. -- Steve Dallas
Chaos Lich -- I don't care about the loss but couldn't you have taught me how to
dodge? -- Tesen
Rock A Bye -- Bye bye, baby. -- Milquetoast
The Madness -- Congratulations on beating an unarmored warrior that is standing
around waiting to be hit. I am sure it was actually one of your tougher fights. --
Venric
Melkor -- I guess hitting really hard has its uses. I just wish I got to use it
more. -- Elroran
Kelos -- Sigh, I remember once not long ago when I was a good warrior and didn't need
to get lucky to beat my opponents. -- Tyvin
Sampsa -- Better luck next time. -- Hermes
Nebuchadnezzar -- Keep trying, eventually you will live up to The Sandman's
expectations. -- Zenar
Ferret Inferno -- My desperation strategy saved me once again. -- Woundwort
Micawber -- You just can't keep a good dwarf down. -- Mimr
Not even with a lot of rocks? I just, you know, wonder about that.
Xerxes -- It was over in a flash. -- Beag Magda
O -- That was brutal. -- Artemisia
Hermes -- I'm still looking for my first ADM win, 0-3 so far. -- Sampsa
White Knight -- I wish we could have stopped at the end of the FIRST minute, when I
was ahead. Ah, well. -- Raven Eyes
Meltdown -- (vicious scowl) We'll see about that. -- Brangus
Touch My Monk, Eh? -- Not even on a dare! -- Moonjumper, non monkey toucher
Runequest -- I'll carve runes on your bones! -- Madbull
Nebuchadnexxer -- I wasn't really shocked. I expected that. -- Redfox
P.S. I wonder how many skills I have to go yet?
Drake -- What's Tankesh doing in our Semester Report? I don't think he's ever run
anyone in Free Blades. -- Jorja, manager of Punny Animals, Sweet Magic, Cardow
Hunters, etc.
P.S. How did all my warriors manage to stay out of the Worst category?
P.P.S. Are you sure you didn't send us half of Home Guard's report? That's where
Ho-Chan managers.
P.P.P.S. The longest fight I know of was in Crysalis, which is, after all, a slow
arena.
Venric -- You don't deserve a prolonged winning streak. -- Brangus

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
