Ibizond, Korga, and in between:
Fist of Kjarran strode briskly along the road that ran east from Ibizond. It
would eventually reach Malcorn and then Zuwayza, but that was several days away even
if nothing came of this effort to catch the killer. What kind of man, he wondered
would haunt a lonely stretch of road and kill only single travelers after dark? A
coward, for one thing. But it might be useful to consider the other factors; after
all, the ambush ahead that was supposed to catch the killer might fail. He could end
up fighting alone. His hand caressed the hilt of his sword. And he'd do very well
by himself, if he had to.
The Murskan, Cadal, believed the killer was a non-human monster of some sort,
perhaps a demon. It would be a feather in his cap to kill a demon.... But he had to
remember that he wasn't out here for glory, even when the glory would honor mighty
Kjarran, and his daughter Jayde, too, of course. He was here to rid the area of a
killer. He peered sharply into the trees on either side of the road. Though the sun
had not yet vanished behind the western hills, the woods were already filled with
shadow. Anything could be hiding there.
In fact, Aghtamar, Zilla, and Cadal were hiding there, somewhere a little
farther ahead. No human would detect them, Fist believed. Cadal might be a semi-
barbarian, as all the Murskans were, and a second-rate gladiator (for a Lord
Protector), but he knew what he was doing in the woods. Fist sighed and shook his
head. What the Murskans should be doing in the woods was cutting down the trees and
planting beans. Oh, well. Doubtless that would come in time, as they absorbed
civilization from their more enlightened neighbor, the Glorious Empire.
Meanwhile, there was the killer. The sun was balanced on the rim of the hills,
and the shadows were stretching out of the forest and across the road. It was time
for the killer to appear.
As though his thought had conjured the sound, he heard hoofs on the road ahead
of him. No one had mentioned the killer being mounted. Could this be a chance
victim? Some unfortunate traveler from the east who didn't know the risk he was
taking? The rider was still out of sight, as the road ahead curving and slanting
into a valley dark with trees. That valley would be a good place for the killer to
set his ambush.... Or for Cadal to set his! Fist had a sudden vision of the killer
and the gladiators facing each other across the road, waiting for a victim to walk
into their trap. He resisted the urge to laugh; after all, it could be true! He
also resisted the urge to break into a run, which would tire out him right when he
might be needing his full strength.
Somewhere ahead, but farther away than the horseman, a hound bayed, answered by
two more. At least, Fist of Kjarran was fairly sure they were hounds, and not
wolves. But it was enough to make anyone's blood run cold, and that alone might have
scared a timid traveler to death. And who would be hunting with hounds along this
road at night? Fist wasn't a country boy, but something seemed out of step in this.
Maybe the killer used the hounds to terrify his victims? In any case, the horsemen
in the valley was in danger.
Fist paused to listen. He had lost track of the hoofbeats when he'd heard the
baying, but now he picked them up again. They were faster-paced, but...they didn't
seem to be getting any closer. He shuddered in sympathy for the rider as he hurried
ahead. It must be like one of those nightmares where you run and run and can't
escape.
Darkness filled the little valley like a pool of water. Fist had the
unreasonable feeling that he should hold his breath as he descended. There was a
thin wail from below, then shouts and the clangor of swords. He broke into a trot.
Some other traveler must have drawn the killer and sprung the ambush before he got
there!
At the bottom of the valley, the road crossed a stream. The woods were broken
there so that some moonlight came down onto the bridge and the struggle going on
there. Swords flickered in reflected moonlight, and shadows surged back and forth.
Fist drew his sword. One shadow detached itself from the struggle. It was
silhouetted briefly against the white foam of the stream: a gigantic hound, black as
hate except for crimson ears and eyes that burned like fire. It bayed as it raced
along the road toward Fist of Kjarran.
Fist shuddered. You didn't have to be timid for that sound and sight to freeze
your blood! But he was a gladiator, a Lord Protector, a faithful follower of Kjarran
and Jayde. No dog was going to intimidate him. He steadied his sword to receive the
charge.

Talahya?
They found a flagstone path that paralleled the shoreline and flipped a coin,
turned to the right (as calculated when facing the shore), and strode along briskly
through thinning fog.
"It's going to be a hot day once this fog clears," Scarlatti said, with the air
of one who will make conversation at any cost. "If we could find a hill or a tower,
we might see for miles."
Fizban's eyebrows rose. "Now that is a good idea, an excellent idea!" The old
wizard looked around hopefully. "I would really LIKE to be able to see for miles.
We might guess where we are, if we can do that."
"We won't see anything we recognize," Carris Fallstar predicted. This is
somewhere else entirely. I can feel it in my bones." The elf shrugged. "But a long
view to put ourselves in some kind of geographical context might be useful."
After five minutes of walking, it became apparent that the geographical context
was flat, and that if there were any buildings nearby, they were hidden by a belt of
trees that lay just inland of the path they'd found. The best they'd managed in the
way of a height was a hill that rose about ten feet above the beach. Fog lingered
under the trees, but over the water to their left, it was clearing fast. It was
already clearer than they had ever seen the air between the Isle of the Eye and
Alastari. The water went on to the horizon, but it was blotched with wooded islands
in the middle distance. Some of the islands had castles on them, shining cream and
golden and red as coral in the morning sun. There were boats, too, or perhaps they
were ships: big vessels and small, with sails, or banks of oars, or less obvious
means of propulsion.
"Well, at least it isn't an uninhabited world we've come to, apparently."
Moonjumper studied the scene critically. "But--"
"The path already told us there are people here," Scarlatti said.
"But," Moonjumper persisted, "it's a damned large one. We're going to have to
find someone to talk to, and people aren't exactly lining up on the path to meet us."
Rogan, who naturally had not been staring around, tensed suddenly. "Someone is
coming along the path," he said.

Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hail, Free Blades!
Well, turn two on the throne for me and I beat a great warrior in keeping it!
Ultimate Fury, I didn't keep the throne in 101 for 11 straight turns for nothing!
Not that you had much chance to do anything once you where on the ground. Now can I
keep this throne a third turn? Stay tuned!

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Today was, you know, something else, only it was yesterday really and these
notes are, like, totally late, but not very late, only a little. It was because of,
well, a lot of things, you know how it goes. But Zontani was in the office
sharpening his eyes, and Snide made a, you know, remark, and Zontani stabbed him in
the alley with his sharp eyes and then ran off into a deep con cave to hide because
of his legs being so stout. Like piano legs, except no piano. So, anyway, I'm doing
this today instead of yesterday. And besides, it's been so hot, and this morning it
isn't but it will be later, so I want to hurry and get outside before later, okay?
Some stuff about fights: Blackest Pride was avoided by Demons of Darkness,
which I don't know how they did it, because when it's dark or black, you can't see,
right? But there it is. Or it was, yesterday. You know what I mean. I think maybe
Artemisia got the most challenges, although what Zontani SAID is that she's got a lot
of enemies. I don't believe that. I think he's just got enemies on his mind because
of hanging out with Snide in alleys.
We had fifty-three fights, which makes me wonder where everybody went. I mean,
we had more last time, didn't we? And twenty-four challenges, which isn't even half.
But six of the challenges were TV, which is almost as good as renting your own
videos. Some standbys fought, I didn't count them, well, okay, two, I guess. Two
isn't many. And two warriors actually DIED. I knew it was unhealthy to fight in
this heat. I think the longest fight was nine minutes, which is about ten minutes
too long for ME, I can tell you.
Well, anyway, here are some notes about exciting, action-packed fights.
SWEET CHASTITY (35-504) (31-27-1,51) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE fought SANDY (22-5829)
(20-12-1,72) of WOMEN OF REALITY. SWEET CHASTITY overpowered SANDY in an exciting 1
minute bloody uneven fight. And if you think this is exciting, wait till Sandy gets
back from vacation!
ZENAR (12-4043) (20-19-1,100) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought BLUEY (29-4317) (24-
20-0,92) of CROC FILES. ZENAR devastated BLUEY in an exciting 1 minute mismatched
fight. I thought of saying something rude, but I guess Bluey has been humbled enough
already.
JOELEAN (97-903) (10-11-4,65) of IVER'S GIRLS fought HERMES (58-6016) (15-7-
0,83) of MYTHICAL. JOELEAN was savagely defeated by HERMES in an action packed 3
minute bloody bout. This was strange because of Mythical being, you know, not real.
At least, doesn't it mean that? Or am I think of something else, like having a drink
with an umbrella in it?
SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543) (56-82-2,108) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought POINTY
(16-4427) (32-22-0,122) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS... SUPERIOR FORCES was bested by POINTY
in an exciting 4 minute battle. Because of Pointy having sharp pointing things and
going "mmmmm" all the time. I bet you didn't know about the "mmmmm" being a magic
word, did you? It makes things not melt in your hands, which is good, because you
need to keep your hands clean.
LADY EMILY (33-6626) (18-11-1,146) of LUROCIANS II fought HELYSE (103-36) (45-
35-5,165) of Local People. LADY EMILY handily defeated HELYSE in an exciting 1
minute mismatched contest. Lady Emily, I want you to, you know, think about this. I
mean, it's rude to make it look so easy to defeat Helyse, which she might not want to
come back again if everybody boos and, you know, hisses at her, and then where would
we be?
IMMORTAL (49-2905) (46-85-1,145) of RPG'S fought MELTDOWN (32-3836) (23-3-0,150)
of WOLF PACK II. IMMORTAL was demolished by MELTDOWN in an exciting 1 minute
mismatched match. Well, okay, so I laughed. But it was funny. I mean, there was
Immortal looking, like, this totally superior dude, and Meltdown just went snick and
snee, and then Immortal didn't look superior, you know? So i laughed.
STEEL CLOTH (56-1745) (93-103-3,195) of PITT GLADIATORS fought PAPPI DEWRAG (66-
3565) (28-5-0,163) of HELTER SKELTER. STEEL CLOTH savagely defeated PAPPI DEWRAG in
an action packed 7 minute gory fight. Seven minutes is too long yesterday, because
of yesterday being so hot, but hi to Uncle Charlie anyway. It is Uncle Charlie,
isn't it?
TRYURLUCK (61-1029) (47-36-1,208) of BLOOD KNIGHTS fought MADBULL (13-4198) (48-
77-1,176) of CARDOW HUNTERS. TRYURLUCK was viciously subdued by MADBULL in an
exciting 1 minute gory match. It isn't any use for Madbull to win. I mean, when he
loses, he gets even madder, and when he wins, he gets all bloodlusty, so why not have
him lose because then SOMEBODY will feel good about the fight.
MAGE (49-2918) (64-66-3,195) of RPG'S fought TITAN (21-5070) (34-21-1,155) of
BLACKEST PRIDE. MAGE was devastated by TITAN in an action packed 1 minute mismatched
match. This was kind of like Immortal and Meltdown, only with different warriors. I
liked the part at the end where Mage turned himself into a little girl with a teddy
bear. It was a cute bear.
THORON (16-4094) (39-47-0,209) of THE BLACKHEARTS fought BLINDFOLD SKIING (55-
2408) (58-81-2,178) of BAD IDEA. THORON was slaughtered by BLINDFOLD SKIING in a 1
minute one-sided conflict. It wasn't like Thoron wasn't WARNED. It says right THERE
that Blindfold Skiing is a bad idea, and it IS. Especially in the summer.
SNAP CRACKLE PUP (49-738) (37-34-1,189) of PETS ON FIRE fought MOONRACER (50-
3206) (33-28-1,197) of MISFIT TOYS. SNAP CRACKLE PUP slimly won victory over
MOONRACER in an exciting 3 minute struggle. Is "slimly won" like having 2% milk in
the bowl to make the Pup go snap crackle? Or even, you know, skim?
KOOSH BALL (71-3536) (35-22-0,207) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought SMUG BUG (55-2900)
(37-53-0,185) of RHYME TYME. KOOSH BALL defeated SMUG BUG in an action packed 2
minute battle. This is what happens when bugs set around looking smug. I think it's
a July beetle. Smug is, I think. Or, you know, an August beetle, only they're
fatter. But also smug.
BLACKMYTH (11-4018) (50-30-0,210) of SHADOWS fought JULIUS (64-3641) (65-71-
2,185) of UNDER DURESS. BLACKMYTH vanquished JULIUS in an exciting 1 minute
mismatched bout. This is what happens when Julius offers to buy orange drinks all
around if he loses. And lots of people don't even LIKE orange drinks, but free is,
you know, free.
ULTIMATE FURY (12-5020) (26-10-2,200) of LUROCIANS IV fought FUNNY BUNNY (55-
1862) (81-114-1,186) of RHYME TYME. ULTIMATE FURY narrowly defeated FUNNY BUNNY in a
popular 9 minute gory duel. I think this is probably the longest fight, but it
seemed even longer because of Funny trying to tell a joke and he kept forgetting the
punch line, and finally Ultimate just punched him anyway to get it over with.
LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (85-77-4,190) of ILLFANG PACT fought CHAOS LICH (15-4132)
(38-23-0,188) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. LUMP O'GORE savagely slew CHAOS LICH in an
exciting 1 minute bloody match. I don't understand this one because I thought lich
meant you were dead already. So how could he be slewed? And what is this Lump doing
anyway, slewing five people now? He must be a caravan raider.
BLACKER (33-4445) (59-83-3,191) of HOMES fought HELYSE (103-36) (45-35-5,165) of
Local People. BLACKER was savagely defeated by HELYSE in an exciting 1 minute
gruesome struggle. See? THIS is what happens when you get Helyse upset. She gets
save and gruesome, and somebody else has to PAY for it.
EXQUISITE CORPSE (43-3200) (53-19-2,225) of CRADLE OF FILTH fought HINDENBIRD
(49-1277) (37-19-0,207) of PETS ON FIRE. EXQUISITE CORPSE savagely defeated
HINDENBIRD in an exciting 2 minute brutal fight. This one was so brutal it didn't
even get off the ground, and I don't want to THINK about it.
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (41-31-0,236) of DARKMOON fought RAVEN EYES (12-2709) (62-
78-0,198) of SWEET MAGIC. WOUNDWORT defeated RAVEN EYES in an exciting 1 minute
match. This would be some kind of home-town fight, wouldn't it? Except I don't
think these warriors are, like, the same generation at all.
HOUSE MOUSE (55-221) (107-167-2,219) of RHYME TYME fought XERXES (67-2429) (39-
34-2,207) of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE. HOUSE MOUSE was overpowered by XERXES in an action
packed 1 minute uneven fight. Which is because of House nibbling the corner of a
sack of, you know, oats or something, and there wasn't grain to feed a horse, and
because of being one horse short, the army didn't win, and the kingdom crashed, and
all sorts of stuff like that. I think.
Oh, now the challenge matches. Which if I'd been doing all the fights instead
of just some of them would mean I was half way through, but I'm not. Oh, well.
AGRO (29-4314) (21-26-1,67) of CROC FILES challenged LOPING WOLF (56-1796) (51-
90-0,73) of REDHORSE. Up 6. AGRO was handily defeated by LOPING WOLF in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge bout. And after the fight, Loping tied some teeth to his
horse's bridle, which the horse didn't like, well, who would? but whose teeth do you
think they were?
VENRIC (60-5709) (17-21-0,52) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 challenged RAVEN (71-3435)
(15-17-0,62) of 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS. Up 10. VENRIC vanquished RAVEN in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge fray. Because of being really tired of hearing the Raven go
around saying Nevermore, Nevermore. I mean, anybody would get tired of that.
ROCKI ROADS (25-4365) (26-28-0,91) of IVERS GIRLS challenged RUNEQUEST (49-2862)
(60-93-3,140) of RPG'S. Up 49. ROCKI ROADS was demolished by RUNEQUEST in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge melee. Which is a big up-challenge, and what did you
expect, anyway? Probably there were skills, though.
ARTEMISIA (12-5096) (29-27-0,129) of DARKMOON challenged FRAIL WHALE (55-1968)
(98-150-3,136) of RHYME TYME. Up 7. ARTEMISIA savagely defeated FRAIL WHALE in a
popular 8 minute gory Challenge duel. If Artemisia was most challenged, how come she
was the challenger? I don't understand this. Or maybe Zontani didn't understand it.
Or maybe he spilled a drink (without an umbrella) on his notes and it didn't mean
what it said. I don't know. But eight minutes is too long in this heat. Really.
FODDERER (36-5602) (22-22-0,103) of ANARKYSTS challenged MILA (55-29) (48-84-
0,109) of ROCANIS RIDERS. FODDERER demolished MILA in an action packed 2 minute
brutal one-sided Challenge fight. You see? Funny hats are not enough. But I have
to go for a walk before it gets too hot, so I will put this aside for a few minutes.
You won't mind, will you?
Well, gee! Even not-very-hot is hot. Darn.
DARK OMEGA (21-4983) (39-38-0,150) of LORDS OF SHADOWS challenged NIGHTIE KNIGHT
(12-4731) (39-26-1,158) of LOBOTOMATION. Up 8. DARK OMEGA vanquished NIGHTIE KNIGHT
in a popular 1 minute mismatched Challenge fray. Does this make you wonder what Dark
sleeps in? Or shouldn't I be asking something like that?
GRIMTHANE (16-3957) (28-32-0,139) of THE BLACKHEARTS challenged REDFOX (13-4197)
(40-57-0,146) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 7. GRIMTHANE subdued REDFOX in an action packed
1 minute Challenge bout. Which is, you know, one of those "everybody does it"
things. I mean, why does Redfox keep fighting?
TESEN (12-4211) (37-34-1,180) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged THE BIG MEOW (21-
5307) (19-3-0,133) of MEOW MIX. Down 47. TESEN was beaten by THE BIG MEOW in an
action packed 6 minute Challenge fight. Gosh, that has got to be soooo embarrassing,
I mean, to challenge way down and then lose. And to cat food! I mean, it's good cat
food, but still.
SMALL ROOMS (97-606) (15-6-4,169) of THE HASTINGS challenged BLACK ANDARUS (71-
3783) (18-8-0,164) of SHADOW MOD. Down 5. SMALL ROOMS overpowered BLACK ANDARUS in
a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Which is one of those "well, of course!"
things. I mean, a small room would make ME feel overpowered, too, which is why I
always stay at the Hiltonesque.
STEVE DALLAS (33-5314) (64-32-0,206) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged WHITE KNIGHT
(58-5971) (56-42-2,222) of CRUSADE. Up 16. STEVE DALLAS overpowered WHITE KNIGHT in
an exciting 2 minute one-sided Challenge bout. What was exciting was, you know how
sometimes people throw pies in the face? Which is a waste of good pie, but that is,
like, another matter, right? Well, Steve had pizza pie, and White ended up with
anchovies in his ears and pineapple hair and, you know, cheese everywhere.
GREW SOME SHREW (16-4135) (47-40-2,204) of HELPLESS ANIMALS challenged BANKRUPT
(71-3786) (37-14-0,197) of SHADOW GOLD. Down 7. GREW SOME SHREW was luckily beaten
by BANKRUPT in a 7 minute Challenge brawl. There's some kind of note where which I
can't read about Bankrupt and the number seven, but it must not be important. Or if
it is, so what? Because I can't read it.
RILLION (36-5545) (28-14-1,186) of THE CHADS challenged TRAVELLER (49-2866) (68-
71-2,184) of RPG'S. Down 2. RILLION tW overpowered TRAVELLER in an action packed 3
minute uneven Challenge struggle. I read about somebody who overpowered travellers
once. He had an inn, NOT a Hiltonesque, and when travellers stayed there, he killed
them and robbed them, which makes it hard to have repeat business.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (31-20-0,193) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN challenged TOUCH MY
MONK, EH? (12-5112) (29-21-0,192) of ESTIMATED PROPHETS. Down 1. SEVERUS SNAPE was
viciously subdued by TOUCH MY MONK, EH? in a 5 minute conflict. But are you SURE
that Severus actually DID touch the Monk? I mean, what if it just looked that way
but was really opera illusion?
MYMID EL NAIMIS (7-4420) (53-21-1,193) of THE DANGER DOGS challenged GNU WORLD
ORDER (16-3948) (60-54-3,196) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. Up 3. MYMID EL NAIMIS devastated
GNU WORLD ORDER in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge battle. I thought a gnu was like a
deer or, you know, a nantelope, but different. And dogs always chase things like
deers and nantelopes, so why not?
MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-1744) (39-51-4,194) of BALLROOM BLITZ challenged MIMR (82-
3783) (43-34-2,195) of SOL INVICTUS. Up 1. MR. TESTOSTERONE was overpowered by
MIMR in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge match. But I bet Mimr can't dance. Lots of
people can't, so that being able to dance is, you know, what's special, and Mr.
shouldn't mind about losing so much, because of being able to dance.
RED HUMMER (65-5154) (48-48-3,203) of GOOD VIBRATIONS challenged PENDRAGON (49-
2982) (84-68-0,194) of RPG'S. Down 9. RED HUMMER overpowered PENDRAGON in a 2
minute one-sided Challenge fight. I don't know, this fight just didn't do anything
for me. Maybe if I'd been there and seen it, I would think of something to say, but
not today. Or, you know, yesterday.
BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (40-24-2,216) of DARKMOON challenged DR. SCUM (15-1968)
(46-45-2,220) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Up 4. BEAG MAGDA viciously subdued DR. SCUM in an
action packed 2 minute Challenge fight. I've heard of vinegar being good for scum.
At least, I think it was vinegar and scum. Or maybe not. Did you use vinegar, Beag?
Even white vinegar.
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (46-26-3,212) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged FERRET INFERNO
(49-361) (39-29-2,215) of PETS ON FIRE. Up 3. E.A.POLECAT won victory over FERRET
INFERNO in a 1 minute Challenge duel. So this is like barbequed farret, right? Ick.
The pieces are, you know, too small, and it needs cranberry sauce, not hoarce
radishes.
MELKOR (13-1821) (33-11-0,236) of SILMARILLIAD challenged TRY ME NOW (61-846)
(52-46-1,259) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Up 23. MELKOR was viciously subdued by TRY ME NOW
in a 2 minute Challenge competition. Well, what can you expect? I mean, would they
ask you to Try Him Now if he wasn't ready?
Oh, the TV challenges! That means nearly the end. Great! It isn't that I
don't like all you guys, but I have, you know, other stuff to do. After all, it
isn't like this was still yesterday.
SAMOO (37-4630) (19-11-1,97) of DARKENED PRIDE TV challenged SAMPSA (31-4233)
(19-4-2,79) of SOL INVICTUS. Down 18. SAMOO overpowered SAMPSA in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge struggle. I don't know these people. Why haven't they talked to me
and told me stuff so I can say things in the spy report? I can't make it ALL up, you
know!
SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (20-2-0,179) of CASTLE BLACK TV challenged TYVIN (60-
5382) (42-34-0,186) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Up 7. SETHRA LAVODE demolished TYVIN
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. Black and Dark. This is, you know,
a same old story kind of thing. Dark dark dark. Black black black. How about
Demons of Daylight?
DESECRATION (21-4392) (25-13-2,156) of BLACKEST PRIDE TV challenged SHEA
MAGEBORN (75-2273) (27-23-0,160) of SHADOWCIRCLE. Up 4. DESECRATION vanquished SHEA
MAGEBORN in a popular 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Because of shadows not
being as dark as black? Don't ask me, I don't know these things!
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (40-15-0,207) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS TV challenged GROGGY
DOGGY (55-223) (110-169-0,220) of RHYME TYME. Up 13. DREAM WARRIOR was savagely
defeated by GROGGY DOGGY in a 3 minute Challenge melee. Well, of course. I mean, to
be dreaming, you have to be asleep, and groggy is at least partly awake, so this
makes perfect sense, kind of.
And for the Lord Marshall, NEMESIS (4-5115) (46-8-0,268) of CHAMPIONS TV
challenged BLADE RUNNER # (33-4544) (81-57-4,252) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Down 16.
NEMESIS devastated BLADE RUNNER # in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight.
This was good, because Blade Runner has been Lord Marshall, too, so it was, you know,
fair even if it wasn't even. Well, you know. And Blade Runner kills people, too. I
don't think that's nice, not really. Not even for a Lord Marshall. So
congratulations to Nemesis, and now this spy report is done, so congratulations to
me, too. Remember, blood on a purple robe stains, so don't wear a purple robe into
the arena, okay? I mean, that would be silly. Wear armor.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Lima Bean Flambe -- It seems your manager has lost his mojo! Losing that style
matchup, on his challenge even, is not a good sign.... Give my regards to the rest
of your teammates. -- The Big Meow
Rillion -- 33-8, you're closing the gap, my friend. -- Sylvester F.
Manager of Darkmoon -- Are you looking to replace Rillion as the nail under my
hammer? If so, you are off to a good start. -- Sylvester Frothingslosh, mgr. of
Blackest Pride etc....
Sethra Lavode -- You are scary. -- Titan
Nirfauna -- You're not all that helpless, are ye lassie? Sure an' I was appalled
when ye stepped out onto the sand, looking so large and wicked. 'Course I was even
more appalled at that incredible flesh-splitting slash to the groin. It's amazing,
the things we survive, ain't it? -- Lump o' Gore
You should talk!
Azreal Els III -- Wow, you're faster than me and meaner than me. It was sheer luck
that your weapon broke on that parry and I was able to win. I think I'd like to
fight you again, just to see if I can do better. -- Royland
Tyvin -- Well, it was unpleasant but it was short. I hate getting hit there. --
Kelos
Hayseed X-IV -- Did we fight yet? I have this vague memory of you walking towards me
with your blade swinging... -- Mila
Debby Tonte -- You think there's something funny about my hat? Granted, it's not the
season for fuzzy ear flaps, but I had them flipped up. I only flip them down when it
gets cold. -- Mila
Did you know your fuzzy flaps have eyes and, you know, teeth?
Venric -- Kelos, Mila and I all fought sexless golems. What's up with that? I
mean...nothing is up, so to speak, but I have heard that there are gender attachments
available. Why don't you get one? You might fight better. -- Loping Wolf (who won
against HIS golem, unlike his teammates)
Creed -- I hope that you aren't sore about me challenging you again. I'm running low
on upchallenges that I think I might win. And I still need to learn 11 skills.
Could be a long row to hoe. -- Woundwort
So get a tractor.
Touch My Monk Eh? -- I see that you are doing much better than my teammate,
Artemisia. We had high hopes for her, but now she's looking at possible retirement.
Anyway, I hope you keep doing well here. -- Beag Magda
Meltdown -- That didn't work out at all for me. -- Artemisia
Raven -- Close one! For a second there I thought that you would riposte. -- Sampsa
Koosh Ball -- What, do you have stone for bones then? I kept the critical attacks
coming for seven minutes and it's still not enough! And it looks like I'll be at the
grindstone all night, trying to get the edge back on that longsword! -- MIMR
Hel -- Wow, apparently CN doesn't matter anymore. Do you do some insane amount of
damage or did I just fall victim to random damage and consistent attack location? --
Dubijn
Peter People-Eater -- You can win the fight, but if you try to eat me, you're going
to find out I know things about fighting that aren't covered in the rules. -- Raven
Eyes
Xerxes -- Even your ekses won't be enough to save you from Madbull should you chance
to wander down a dark alley. Therefore I strongly advise you to avoid dark alleys
for a while, or else travel with a companion to cover your back. Outside the arena,
Madbull fights dirty. -- Redfox
The dark alleys are full of people who fight dirty. Someone should put in
lights. Or, you know, a laundromat.
Hmm, first a warrior in the stands called Funny Bunny pathetic, then the audience
booed and hissed, Sheila Greywand proclaimed me the victor, and the audience was
spellbound. A confused sequence there, possibly a sign of the confusion of the
times. -- Moonjumper
D -- There's so little to you, I couldn't see anything to strike. -- Redfox
Samoo -- It's probably part of a foul plot. -- Brangus
Artemisia -- Yes, I was stunned by your ambidextrous prowess. Very impressive. And
you can do good stuff in the arena, too. -- Redfox
18 July 2003
To All Managers -- I would like to take this time to announce that my alliance, The
Association, is no more. Due to the dead weight managers of the alliance and their
lack of participation, DarkSpirit and I have formed a new alliance: The Firm. We
have taken on two members so far and are looking for a few more. If you would like
to find out more about The Firm, you can diplo Dark Spirit, Unknowns XX in arena 15
or myself, Sungod, Sadists F2FII in arena 62.

Citizens of Alastari, a bright dawn has risen. While you slept, a pernicious
force has entered the once-fair City of Aruak. It fought alongside their treasured
warriors, it drank with their fans, and it slept with their women. Now the masks are
coming off.
Warriors, be afraid...be very afraid. After years of Andorian managers ranting
that Aruak is the safest city in Alastari, the Frothingslosh Syndicate has selected
Aruak City as the home for its next epic 'contest'--Murder by Numbers II. Our spies
have selected the warriors for extermination, and the executioners have had several
months to prepare. Now a new age of darkness will descend upon Aruak, as the
Syndicate and its allies bring an entirely new level of competition to the arena!
Downchallenges! Assassinations! Small poodles as hors d'oeuvres!
The Murder by Numbers II 'rules' will be announced next cycle. However, we
invite all managers, from all corners of Alastari, to come to Aruak City and take
part...in one way or another. Help defend the honor of a long heralded haven for the
pure, or join the forces of change in their siege of the ice-cream and cake
stronghold of the Dukes of Nerf-Dueling!
This exercise is not for either the faint of heart or the weak willed. Blood
will flow, brains will leak, and beer will be chugged. Either way, we welcome you
with open arms and gleaming blades.
This public service announcement has been brought to you by Frothingslosh Epic
Contests (tm), the number 86, and the letter 'K'.
The Frothingslosh Syndicate

* * * *The Third Annual Turf War* * * *
Yes, it's time again for alliances to go to war! TW3 will be held in DM 47
(North Fork) at a date to be specified later--right after Crip's Incomprehensible
Contest is over...but I'm sure everyone wants to get their teams there soon! Here
are the rules:
1. Each alliance must have a leader declare the arrival of his alliance. The leader
will be responsible for verifying any and all teams/managers who declare to the
alliance he/she is leading.
2. Each manager, team declaring for the contest must have approval of the leader,
donate one Roll-up Certificate ($5) to the prize pot (send it to me by diplo, by
snail, or a note to customer service), and declare his/her team by diplo, p-ad or
snail.
3. Each team may declare one warrior as champion. All points scored by a champ are
double!
4. Prizes are as follows (mostly...there WILL be some things added as the prize pot
grows with entry donations--this list is not final!)
* Highest scoring alliance -- Rename Arena 47 for a period of 6 months, one half
of the total prize pot donated; roll-up certs.
* The Alliance with the most returns from the DA will get to re-name the DA
monsters for a period of 6 months.
* The alliance with the most warriors listed as style masters will get to pick
the Alastari city/arena to host the next Grand Tournament.
* The warrior with the most front page honors/awards will have the Arenamaster
named after him for a period of 6 months.
* The Alliance with the most front page Honors/Awards will have the honor of
picking the *slow* arena to host the Fifth Annual Turf War.
* The team with the most listings as Style Master will find out the favorites of
one of their warriors.
* The warrior with the most listings as Style Master will fight at my expense
for five turns (I will transfer to the manager's account).
* The Alliance with the most kills will be able to re-name the stand-in warriors
for a period of 6 months.
* The warrior that scores the most total points will fight at my expense for 5
turns (I will transfer $7.50 to the manager's account).
* The team that scores the most total points will receive an extra share of
roll-up certs from the prize pot.
There may be more categories to come, and the prize pot still has to be
divided...I'm open to category/prize ideas--and further donations to the prize pot.
The contest will run for *TEN* turns; prizes will be awarded at the end of the
11th turn.
Scoring will be as follows:
* 5 points per fight, doubled for each of the following conditions met:
-- Two Alliance -- Champion
-- Challenge -- Two Champions
-- Bloodfeud -- Challenger losing
-- Kill
(Note: DA losses are exempt, but DA wins will be *tripled*!!! Ex: Happy
Slasher goes to the DA and dies, no points are lost. If he wins, his team scores 60
points! If he was a champ, he scores 120 points!)
Use the following chart to calculate scores:
Conditions Met: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Points Per Fight: 5 10 20 40 80 160 320 640
* Awards/Honors and Style Masters will each be awarded points also. Find the total
number of each (do note add Awards and Style Masters together) and consult the graph
below. Champs that score an award or style master count as two.
1 -- 5 7 -- 320
2 -- 10 8 -- 640
3 -- 20 9 -- 1280
4 -- 40 10 -- 2560
5 -- 80 11 -- 5280
6 -- 100 (x2 for each extra)
Note -- These categories *count as "triple"*--they will be figured for each team,
*AND* again for each alliance *as well as* for each warrior!
* Each and every mention in the Spy Report is worth 5 points...period.
* TVs will be scored on the same scale as Awards/Style Masters, but the total points
will be x10. TC's will be scored as TV's, but x10 more.
Number of TV/TC's Points Scored (TV/TC)
1 50/ 500
2 100/1000
3 200/2000
4 400/4000
+ x2/ x2 (for each extra)
Each alliance will start with 5000 points, scores for *fights* will be added to
the winner's total *AND* deducted from the losers.
Come one and all, defend your turf and the honor of your alliance...or your
own!

Assurnasirbanipal invites you to Talcama to participate in the third BATTLE
ROYAL contest. It is a Delarquan contest so brutal that even some of Talcama's most
notable managers will refuse to participate. The rules are simpler than any other
contest: You may not avoid any other contest team. There are no silly rules for who
can and can't compete. Any team in Talcama is eligible to compete. The scoring is
also quite simple (+1 for a win, +1 for a kill (+1 for the win), -1 for a loss) and
the first team to reach 25 points is the winner.
Scoring will be live--the results for the turn posted in the newsletter. The
winner will be able to fight their contest team in Talcama for free for 6 months but
more importantly will win a contest against some of the best managers who play the
game in one of the hardest contests in the game.
First turn for BATTLE ROYAL 3 is Talcama Turn 465, which is due August 30.
