Riztab:
"It's moved into the old office building on the waterfront," Spymaster Torric
said. "The one with the old arena records in it, you know?"
"They, not it," Jorja corrected absently. "More than one monster or whatever.
But I wonder why the office building? It seems so unlikely: the Office Building of
Doom or something."
Torric laughed but said, "It wasn't always an office building. Forty or fifty
years ago, it was a merchant prince's palace. Then the merchant went broke--don't
ask me how, because I do NOT want to know--and Tokken Makrok got the building as part
of the, um, settlement of debts, I guess. And when the arena opened, he sold the
building to the Gladiatorial Commission, and then the lake rose and drowned the lower
floor...." He shrugged. "But it was built on a much older foundation. Hundreds of
years older."
"What was it then, hundreds of years ago?" Jorja asked.
"I've got no clue, I wasn't around then," the Spymaster said. "Heck, I wasn't
even around when the merchant prince was going broke; I heard about that from my
grandfather." He topped up his stein from the pitcher on the table. "What are you
going to do about it? And where's Garfield--isn't that the guy that with you?"
"Garfield's got interests all over Alastari, you can't expect him to hang around
Riztab just to investigate a haunted office building. And besides, why should I, he,
or we do anything at all about it?"
"It worries people," Torric said. "There are, well, there are...noises. At
night. And sometimes people vanish from the lakefront...."
"They do that anyway--vanish. The lakefront isn't the safest place in Riztab
after dark," Jorja pointed out tartly.
"But--"
"And if the building belongs to the Commission now, THEY should be responsible
for whatever is going on," she went on relentlessly.
"But they won't DO anything!" Torric slammed his tankard down onto the table.
Jorja shrugged. "I have my own matters to attend to."
"At best," the Spymaster went on, "they'll assign some Lord Protectors to
investigate and if possible rid the place of its monsters. Why wait? Why not send
some of yours, or call for volunteers, if more are needed and you don't want to go
yourself?"
"If the Commission sends someone, they'll have to pay expenses," Jorja said.
"If we start on our own, they won't. And I'm just breaking even as it is."
Between Ibizond and Korga:
Aghtamar, Zilla, and Cadal sat or knelt, as each preferred, in a shadowy cavern
formed by the drooping branches of a pine. Cadal had vetoed a fire, but they had
food--thick slabs of bread topped with ham and cheese, and water to drink. They'd
taken position well before sunset, in case the killer was out early looking for HIS
position of ambush.
"He doesn't use the same one each time?" Aghtamar asked.
"No. There may be some repeating, judging by where the bodies have been found,
but some are too far apart to have been ambushed from the same spot. There's been a
general progression from east to west, too, as though the killer was coming from the
east coast, maybe from Zuwayza, and heading for the west coast by way of Murska and
Fratsfa. This seems like about the right distance from the last body--"
"I just hope the killer doesn't decide this tree would make a good ambush spot
for HIM," Zilla muttered.
There was a period of silence while the three Lord Protectors alternately ate
and leaned forward to peer through the branches at the road. Their position was in
the bottom of a small valley where the road crossed a steep, rocky stream on an
arched stone bridge.
"I wonder where the priests of Kjarran found the monster," Aghtamar asked in a
tone of idle curiosity. "I wonder if they have any control over it, or if they just
pointed it west at Korga and turned it loose?"
"You think the priests are responsible for this?" Cadal asked, surprised.
"Of course," she said. "Who else?"
"Some of the invaders might have released something that was caged," Cadal
suggested. "If it really is a monster of some kind. If it's just a killer, it could
be anyone. Besides, if it was set by the Kjarranists, you'd think it would leave
their people alone, and it hasn't. Well, we can't be sure about beliefs, but all
races have been attacked."
"The people of Karnhorn race who died might have been followers of Serimna,"
Zilla said. "The priests of Kjarran hate Serimnists more even than Karragit or Orcs
or Shews. More even than Elves."
"It doesn't matter," Cadal said finally. "Monstrous or mortal, it's a killer
and our job right now is to stop it."
Aghtamar was taking her turn peering out at the road. The sun was down, at
least as seen from this location, and the valley was filling with shadows. She
stiffened and whispered, "Somebody coming!"
"Fist of Kjarran?" Zilla asked.
"No, someone coming from the east. Someone on a horse."
"Bad time and place for an innocent traveler," Cadal said, moving up to join her
at the edge of their shelter. "So let's hope it's the killer looking for a place to
set his ambush."
Zilla crammed the last of her bread and cheese into her mouth, muttered
something indistinct, and began to climb the tree, keeping close to the trunk and
spiraling upward out of sight.
The road, which was used by traders' wagons as well as foot and horse traffic,
looped back and forth across the steep hillside to get an easier grade, so it most of
it was hidden behind the trees. All could hear the hoofbeats, though. One horse,
coming steadily at moderate speed. The last stretch above the bridge was in the
clear, however, and still lit, more or less, by the ruddy light of the setting sun
reflecting off clouds above the valley.
A shadow moved at the top of the visible length of road, resolving into a large
hound. Two large hounds. Too large to be hounds, but they weren't horses, bears, or
cattle. The darkness at the edge of the trees stretched out an arm which advanced,
detached, and became a vaguely seen man, or something man-like, on a horse, or nearly
a horse. A third hound followed on his heels.
"The killer," Cadal said, his voice little more than a ghost of sound.
"Couldn't be anything else."
"It could be human and I wouldn't mind," Aghtamar countered as quietly.
"Because THAT surely is no human or any other race I ever met."
What little they could see of the figure on the horse seemed tall as a Shew but
skeletally thin. The flame-colored light of the setting sun--or something--made the
eyes of horse, rider, and hounds all reflect redly. One of the hounds stopped, head
up and turning slowly. It looked directly at the tree where the gladiators were
hiding and then pointed its nose at the sky and loosed a howl that would freeze the
blood of a salamander. The rider turned to look toward the tree also, raised a
hunting horn and blew it. Above them, Zilla gave a startled shriek and slid down in
a shower of bark and needles.
"We'd better get on the road," Cadal said urgently. "We're in a trap if we try
to fight from in here."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
The dog charged Fist of Kjarran without finesse, just came straight at him. It
seemed to grow unnaturally as it came closer, from as big as a pony to a beast that
towered like an elephant, and it bayed continually. Fist wondered in passing where
it found the breath to keep howling like that as it ran. No doubt that it was an
unnatural beast of some kind! He muttered a quick prayer, wished for a boar spear,
and knelt, bracing his sword to receive the plunging monster.
At the last moment, its breath already cold on his face, the beast swerved to
pass Fist to his left. Fist twisted quickly and managed to slash across its ribs,
though the cut was only a shallow one. The dog twisted, too, whining with frustrated
eagerness to kill. Fist got back on his feet so that he could turn and keep his face
and blade to the circling hound. Why it didn't leap in to attack, he could not
imagine. It backed up out of blade's reach and bayed at him. The sound was
unpleasant, but that was all--what was the fool creature doing?
It bayed again, with vibrato and tricky overtones. Abruptly Fist guessed that
it was trying to frighten him. What the heck? Could it ONLY kill through fear, or
at least only physically attack those who had been unmanned by fear? He lunged
suddenly, and it scrambled back out of the way rather than meet the attack and
attempt to fight. Kjarran and Jayde! It was like the old motto: the only thing to
be feared was fear itself. He leaped to the attack again, pressing the infernal
hound relentlessly. The hound dodged and twisted agilely, and whenever it had a
moment, it howled. Not the hunting call, but the howl of a dog voicing its woes.
It was answered by a hunting horn from farther down the valley, and for the
first time since he'd seen the hound, Fist of Kjarran again noticed the sound of
battle down there. Apparently the hound was calling for help.
Kjarran and Jayde! A beast of prey that was at least twice his size and still
needed help to kill him was not something to frighten a child, much less a Lord
Protector! But there was no telling, the help it summoned might be more formidable.
Better to take care of the hound now, at once, and not have to fight hound and helper
together. Besides, his assistance might be needed down at the bridge where the other
Lord Protectors were fighting the hound's master. He made a determined attack on the
hound, pressing it back with his thrusts and slashes, attempting to corner it against
the low bank at one side of the road. It yelped, snapped, and lunged back at him
desperately.
"Ah...I shoulda remembered," Fist muttered, dodging. "Cornered rats and
all...." He tried one last slash as the beast went by and laid open its hip to the
bone. It screamed and fell.
There was a wordless shout of fury from farther along, two human screams,
drumming hooves that approached his position faster than a horse should be able to
gallop up that slope. Fist moved quickly to put his back to the low bluff beside the
road. It would hamper his movement, but it would be a worse problem for the
horsemen; at least here he wouldn't have to worry about being ridden down.

Not Talahya:
The gladiators shifted automatically to take up what each considered good
defensive stance. Fizban noted wryly that the ability to support each other in
defense or offense did not appear to be a dominating factor. No doubt Sheila
Greywand had reasons for the type of training she had ordained, each man trained to
be a solitary hero, but he would have preferred to see more teamwork. He sighed
again. Well, she doubtless had her reasons. For himself, he picked a position where
he had a clear field in the direction Rogan was facing and rummaged through his store
of spells for those which would be most useful in a totally unknown situation.
The fog, turned to a golden mist by the sunlight, thinned slowly. Slowly enough
that he would have expected the approaching person to be visible by now. Unless
Rogan had been mistaken, which seemed unlikely. True, he, Fizban, could not hear
anyone approaching, but unfortunately he had noticed a slight deterioration in his
hearing. Getting old was such a nuisance. Very clever of Lady Sheila to have
granted the gladiators agelessness for so long as they remained in her service.
Immortality without agelessness was a cruel jest, but agelessness granted at the
height of one's physical powers was...tempting. Few would refuse it, and the price
seemed so low, merely take an oath to serve her in defense of Alastari.... The oath
had magical overtones, of course, and once given could NOT be ignored. And the
oftener he came to the Isle, associated with Lord Protectors, the more certain Fizban
became that there was a hook somewhere in that tasty bait. Well, that wasn't today's
problem.
The mist farther along the flagstone path swirled and parted. The figure
approaching was approximately human in shape and size, but there had been, the old
wizard thought, reptiles in its ancestry rather than mammals. It was scaled and had
a crest of quills. It stopped and looked at them warily, but without overt
hostility.
"Greetings," Scarlatti said briskly. "We have come from a great distance, and
by accident. Can you tell us where we are?"
The creature uttered a musical trill, then said, in passable Isle cant, "You
have come to the Thallian Hub. Where did you expect to be?"
"We did not expect to have moved at all," Moonjumper answered ruefully. "We
were on the Isle of the Eye, at the city of Talahya."
"It is passing strange," the lizard man said, "but strange things are quite
normal here in Thallia. It is perhaps best that you should speak with the wizards of
the College. If you would have the goodness to come with me?" He gestured towards
the path behind himself and the minutely scaled skin of his forehead twitched,
perhaps the equivalent of a human raising eyebrows in question. "My name, by the
way, is--" he whistled something. "I believe you do not have the type of mouth
needed to speak that, however, and others of your kind might say...Thristle." He
moved along the path in the direction he'd come from, apparently trusting them to
follow and not concerned at having armed humans--and an elf--at his back. It was
only when the lizard man had turned his back that Fizban realized Thristle was armed
with a sword, as well.
Scarlatti hurried to catch up and walk beside their guide. "What do you do here
in Thallia?" he asked.
"Many things are done by different people here," Thristle said. "Thallia is a
Hub, after all. I myself am a gladiator, I fight on a team of netmen." He made a
deep humming sound. "It is not a career my clan would approve, but one does as one
must, and after the battle of Sigarvle was so disastrously lost...." He gave a
surprisingly human shrug. "Those of us who survived were so deeply dishonored by the
situation that we had few options. At least this gladiating allows us to pay our
way, and we remain together as a team, honing our skills for the chance that we all
await wherein we shall retrieve our honor and be able to return to our home,
beautiful Trisnath. What has been your career in the place from which you came?" the
lizard man asked. "What are your skills? For to live on Thallia is not a small
thing, and you will need to find employment at once."
"We're gladiators, too," Scarlatti said. "All but old Fizban there, and he's a
manager."
"Ah, that is bad luck! You are too few to make an effective team, and the best
you can hope for is to be taken on as standbys for the established teams. What are
your specialties? The phalanx teams are always looking for extra men, and I have
heard that the Blue faction chariots are--"
"We are accustomed to fighting one-on-one," Carris Fallstar snapped from
Thristle's other side.
Thristle's forehead twitched again. "Single combat? There is a market for
that, but as unknown challengers you would be likely to get only the worst matches."
He shook his head, his crest of quills rustling. "A hard life, and not even a friend
at your side in the worst of it. I do not envy you that!"
"We would rather simply return to our Talahya," Fizban said.
"And so I would suppose, as I would rather return to Trisnath. But even if you
have no stain of dishonor to wipe out, as I and my companions have, how will you pay
the wizards to accomplish it? The wizards of the College never act for free."
Before anyone could respond to this, Rogan said quietly, "Someone coming up
behind us, fast. A group--at least six, maybe seven. They're wearing mail."
Thristle darted a glance over his shoulder and his hand went immediately to his
sword. "The Ardaunar!" he wailed, turning and drawing. "Though you are not of my
company, I beg you not to flee. The Ardaunar always pursue that which flees!"

SCRAG'S LIZARD of DARK CIRCLE PETS II (Guardian, mgr.)
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
There was a totally strange, you know, memo thing when I got to the office
today. About challenging. It said how Andorak can only have up-challenges because
that's all that's honorable, and Darkholm can only have down-challenges, because of
that being the Delarquan Way. But what does that leave for us? For, you know, Free
Blades that doesn't have to worry about the Delarquan Way or being White-Hat
honorable. Do we only get to make challenges straight across, or do we have to have
half our challenges up and half down, or, you know, what? Or no challenges, and just
random matches? I'm just toally confused, you know?
Blackest Pride was avoided by Demons of Darkness, which is totally what everyone
expects, right? I mean, this is what they do. Moonracer got the most challenges and
traded them for horses, I don't know who he traded with, probably Tokken Makrok at
Riztab because of him doing horse trades, and Moonracer is going to do charriot races
on account of not liking to have a fast food joint. Which is good, because I don't
like fast food anyway. I hate having to chase it, you know?
We only had fifty-three fights, which isn't as much as last time, even. We're
sliding down, you know, the hill. Not that anyone could slide up, but still.
Twenty-eight challenge matches, four TV challenges. Where is everybody going? The
longest fight was nine minutes which was longer than all the others. Six minutes was
next. Nobody gets turtles, because I don't do turtles. I mean, turtles have shells.
Honestly!
So, something about the fights, because of HER thinking I should do stuff like
that.
BRANGUS (16-4162) (23-33-1,66) of PUNNY AMINALS fought DIRT KNAP (15-4418) (19-
2-2,61) of UNKNOWNS XX. BRANGUS slimly won victory over DIRT KNAP in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute match. I didn't know Brangus could win fights.
CENTURION (71-3432) (16-9-1,41) of 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS fought SWEET CHASTITY (35-
504) (32-27-1,77) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE. CENTURION was devastated by SWEET CHASTITY in
a 2 minute gory one-sided bout. Oh, gosh, I don't think I could talk about this one.
I mean, this is totally tubular.
RAVEN (71-3435) (15-19-0,53) of 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS fought ROSELLA (103-39) (26-
25-0,100) of Other People. RAVEN overpowered ROSELLA in a 4 minute mismatched brawl.
Which Rosella didn't like it, but that's what being a standby means, right? I mean,
it isn't like anyone is, you know, giving them strategy changes and challenges and
things.
BEER (71-3539) (18-18-0,54) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought ON MY WAY (61-3154) (13-2-
0,41) of SADISTS F2F. BEER was overpowered by ON MY WAY in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
gory uneven bout. And On just GOT here. Wow. I mean, this is, like, "begin as you
mean to go on," and really mean, too.
RUNEQUEST (49-2862) (61-94-3,117) of RPG'S fought NIGHTIE KNIGHT (12-4731) (39-
28-1,126) of LOBOTOMATION. RUNEQUEST was devastated by NIGHTIE KNIGHT in a 1 minute
one-sided match. Well, you know how it is with Nightie Knight. I mean, the pink
feathers. Mouse feathers. Berry mouse. Berry is the color, and it means like
raspberry and stuff. Or cranberry.
ZENAR (12-4043) (22-19-1,130) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought SAMOO (37-4630) (20-
11-1,111) of DARKENED PRIDE. ZENAR demolished SAMOO in a 1 minute one-sided brawl.
So much for, you know, avoiding and stuff, right? But nobody said it was unfillable.
POINTY (16-4427) (33-22-0,126) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS... fought ARTEMISIA (12-5096)
(30-28-0,126) of DARKMOON. POINTY devastated ARTEMISIA in a crowd pleasing 4 minute
brutal one-sided conflict.
This would have been straight across if it was a challenge. I wish it had been.
I mean, straight across is supposed to be OUR kind of challenges, I think. Or maybe
not, because it's all confusing. I mean, it's all legal, right? The Commission
doesn't stop anyone. So I asked who, you know, was making new rules, and the scribes
in the office said it was the spy reporters. But I'm a spy reporter, and I don't
know anything about it. And I asked Olaf, and nobody told him to make new rules,
either. I would have asked Desiree except for her making some totally unreal remarks
about my hair, which she is just jealous because of mine being sun-streaked, you
know? She can't get good sun streaks in her hair. I think she puts too much oil on
it. And anyway, if you didn't like the challenges, you would do something, right? I
mean, I wouldn't have to do anything. I don't issue challenges or, like, avoids, you
know? That's all your stuff.
Well, anyway, back to the fights. Not that I like fights, but it's, you know,
the job. CATATONIC (9-4649) (28-16-0,163) of DSM4 fought SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543)
(57-83-2,139) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. CATATONIC beat SUPERIOR FORCES in a 2 minute
conflict. I asked someone what catatonic meant, because I thought it was, like, v8
juice for cats, which cats don't like it at all, and he said it meant being asleep.
Only Catatonic wasn't, so I guess he was wrong.
LORD REDMOND (12-4109) (31-15-1,157) of LUROCIANS IV fought FRAIL WHALE (55-
1968) (98-152-3,121) of RHYME TYME. LORD REDMOND was beaten by FRAIL WHALE in an
exciting 3 minute gory battle. But not a mismatch. You saw that, didn't you?
CREED (64-3997) (66-42-0,209) of GROOVE MERCHANTS fought TRY ME NOW (61-846)
(53-47-1,200) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. CREED was vanquished by TRY ME NOW in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided match. Gosh, Creed DID try now, and you see what
happened! That is totally hyperbolic.
BLINDFOLD SKIING (55-2408) (59-82-3,193) of BAD IDEA fought ARUNDA ROCKTROLL
(103-35) (60-40-2,190) of Other People. BLINDFOLD SKIING savagely defeated ARUNDA
ROCKTROLL in a popular 4 minute bloody fray. Does running people down on MY skis
count as defeating? I mean, at least he should use his OWN skis, shouldn't he?
FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (81-116-1,193) of RHYME TYME fought INCISOR (64-3639) (57-
73-4,180) of MASTICATORS. FUNNY BUNNY was overpowered by INCISOR in an action packed
1 minute one-sided battle. Lots of biting. I don't like that. I think it's too,
you know, toothy.
KELOS (55-30) (53-76-3,184) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought TYVIN (60-5382) (43-35-
1,191) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. KELOS slimly lost to TYVIN in an exciting 2 minute
brutal conflict. Is Kelos slim? Is Tyvin slim? How can brutal be slim? I just
don't see this. And what about the horse?
HINDENBIRD (49-1277) (37-20-0,204) of PETS ON FIRE fought DESECRATION (21-4392)
(26-13-2,171) of BLACKEST PRIDE. HINDENBIRD was savagely defeated by DESECRATION in
an exciting 1 minute bloody brawl. Well, you know how it is, there's this guy who
says, "If you don't know what to do, have an explosion." And it works, but it's
messy, you know. Feathers everywhere.
SNAP CRACKLE PUP (49-738) (38-34-1,204) of PETS ON FIRE fought KOOSH BALL (71-
3536) (36-23-0,197) of STUFF I BROUGHT. SNAP CRACKLE PUP savagely defeated KOOSH
BALL in an action packed 9 minute conflict. Nine minutes is the longest fight, which
means it's this one. And I know why it's longest, which is because this is what
happens when you have a dog and a ball. They never get tired.
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (41-16-0,205) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS fought PARANOIA (9-
4557) (15-3-1,159) of DSM4. DREAM WARRIOR savagely defeated PARANOIA in an action
packed 3 minute bloody duel. I guess for Paranoia this is like a Nightmare Warrior,
right? I mean, he really was out to get Paranoia. I could tell. It was the way the
black plume on his helmet hung to the left side. That's always a clue.
MORROLAN (7-4400) (35-40-2,201) of DEATHSGATE fought BLACKER (33-4445) (59-85-
3,175) of HOMES. MORROLAN was beaten by BLACKER in a 2 minute fight. Does this mean
Morrolan is homeless now? Or does Blacker have the gates closed? Or, you know,
what?
TOUCH MY MONK, EH? (12-5112) (30-21-0,207) of ESTIMATED PROPHETS fought HOUSE
MOUSE (55-221) (107-169-2,192) of RHYME TYME. TOUCH MY MONK, EH? overpowered HOUSE
MOUSE in a 2 minute one-sided competition. Mouses and monkeys and a whole zoo
sometimes, and I just can't keep track of this all. Or, you know, monks, but what
kind? I knew a monk once.
BLADE RUNNER # (33-4544) (81-59-4,185) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought
NEBUCHADNEZZER (15-4097) (35-29-0,178) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. BLADE RUNNER # vanquished
NEBUCHADNEZZER in an action packed 1 minute one-sided bout. But he didn't kill him,
Blader kill Neb, I mean, which he did a lot for a while. But it's very unfriendly.
MADBULL (13-4198) (49-78-1,193) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought FERRET INFERNO (49-361)
(39-30-2,201) of PETS ON FIRE. MADBULL overcame FERRET INFERNO in a 2 minute match.
With horns and tramplings. I'm tired of Madbull. I want him to go away. Far away.
STEVE DALLAS (33-5314) (66-32-0,245) of BLOOM COUNTY fought RAVEN EYES (12-2709)
(62-80-0,200) of SWEET MAGIC. STEVE DALLAS handily defeated RAVEN EYES in an
exciting 3 minute one-sided fight. Only this time, not pizza. Big cheeseburgers,
with green chile on them. It's a regional specialty.
STEEL CLOTH (56-1745) (95-103-3,224) of PITT GLADIATORS fought CHAOS LICH (15-
4132) (38-25-0,181) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. STEEL CLOTH luckily beat CHAOS LICH in a
crowd pleasing 2 minute brutal match. These two don't talk, so why should I talk
about them? Answer me that if you can!
XERXES (67-2429) (41-34-2,242) of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE fought WOUNDWORT (12-4228)
(43-31-0,247) of DARKMOON. XERXES won victory over WOUNDWORT in a crowd pleasing 1
minute fight. And Woundwort was BLEEDING, and Xerxes LAUGHED. And this was all
while Woundwort was trying to get stuff into boxes, and there weren't enough boxes
and they weren't big enough, either. It's hard.
PANIC ATTACK (9-3624) (24-12-1,212) of DSM4 fought HEL (82-14331) (28-27-0,198)
of ARCTIC GUARDS. PANIC ATTACK was narrowly defeated by HEL in a 2 minute contest.
Narrowly is like slimly, but not as graceful. More nervous.
MYMID EL NAIMIS (7-4420) (55-21-1,229) of THE DANGER DOGS fought JULIUS (64-
3641) (66-72-2,197) of UNDER DURESS. MYMID EL NAIMIS overpowered JULIUS in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided bout. Well, who, you know, wouldn't? Because of Julius
coming out duressed in orange, which looked totally awful.
And here is, or maybe are, the challenge matches. But they're all out of
balance. Only one was straight across, eight were down, and nineteen were up. Way
out of balance. I even figured the points, and it was 173 down and 218 up, and
that's way out of balance, too. We have to work on this, or They will get mad and
come beat us up! It says so right here in this memo, that every arena has to be
really different. I did argue about it. I mean, Andorak has the honor thing and
never never never down-challenge, and Darkholm has the win thing and down-challenge
all you want, and Lirin Kiv has the beads, so why couldn't WE be special for having
fun?
VENRIC (60-5709) (19-21-0,89) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 challenged AGRO (29-4314)
(21-28-1,57) of CROC FILES. Down 32. VENRIC demolished AGRO in a 2 minute one-sided
Challenge fight. And Venric did, really, I saw him, take measurements for alligator
boots. Or crocodile boots, whichever. You know what I mean.
SUE (22-5828) (19-14-0,71) of WOMEN OF REALITY challenged NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-
5821) (17-14-0,75) of BLADES OF WONDER. Up 4, so we're balanced so far. SUE was
vanquished by NEBUCHADNEZZAR in an exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. Wait!
We just had a Nebuwhatchacallit. There are TWO. That's TOO MUCH. It's too
confusing and I can't even spell it once.
SANDY (22-5829) (20-14-1,46) of WOMEN OF REALITY challenged LOPING WOLF (56-
1796) (52-91-0,72) of REDHORSE. Up 26. SANDY defeated LOPING WOLF in a 2 minute
Challenge fight. This is, like, totally what people expected. I mean, I met Sandy
once. She would defeat anybody if she got mad.
SAMPSA (31-4233) (20-5-2,81) of SOL INVICTUS challenged GRAHAM (29-4318) (26-20-
0,85) of CROC FILES. Up 4. That makes too many up-challenges, so we have to have
some down-challenges quick! SAMPSA overpowered GRAHAM in an exciting 1 minute uneven
Challenge competition. But more crocodile boots. It's a fashion now.
JOELEAN (97-903) (11-12-4,80) of IVER'S GIRLS challenged MILA (55-29) (48-86-
0,92) of ROCANIS RIDERS. Up 12. JOELEAN was vanquished by MILA in an action packed
1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. This just goes to SHOW what a big meanie Mila is.
I mean, beating up a girl like that! And the back of his neck isn't tanned, either,
because of the funny hat.
HERMES (58-6016) (17-7-0,92) of MYTHICAL challenged THE MADNESS (21-5214) (26-9-
1,85) of BLACKEST PRIDE. Down 7. Finally, another down-challenge, but it still
isn't enough. We'll be unbalanced! HERMES overpowered THE MADNESS in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. And after the fight, in the hallway that
goes out of the arena, I saw The Madness BITE Hermes right on the snaky wand!
LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (26-26-0,104) of LUROCIANS II challenged REDFOX (13-
4197) (40-59-0,121) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 17. LORD FIREFLASH was vanquished by
REDFOX in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Gosh. This is a total, like,
surprise, with Redfox winning and all. Maybe he should get a strategy change and win
more. It would make a change.
HAYSEED X-IV (82-6120) (17-8-1,148) of PROJECT HAYSEED challenged THE BIG MEOW
(21-5307) (20-3-0,167) of MEOW MIX. Up 19. HAYSEED X-IV was luckily beaten by THE
BIG MEOW in a popular 4 minute Challenge match. This is because of Meow NOT having
hay fever, which Hayseed was hoping he WOULD have it.
LIMA BEAN FLAMBE (70-3118) (28-19-0,150) of HEAVE HO! challenged MAGE (49-2918)
(65-67-3,179) of RPG'S. Up 29. LIMA BEAN FLAMBE slimly lost to MAGE in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute Challenge fray. Ick.
ULTIMATE FURY (12-5020) (27-11-2,180) of LUROCIANS IV challenged TESEN (12-4211)
(37-36-1,152) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. Down 28. Good, another one. ULTIMATE FURY was
subdued by TESEN in an action packed 2 minute Challenge bout. What I think is, fury
is like panic and you shouldn't do it. I knew a guy once who was a surfer and he
used to get really mad sometimes, and he always fell off then. Always. So maybe
ultimate fury isn't a good idea in the arena, either.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (18-10-0,159) of SHADOW MOD challenged CRYPT KEEPER (15-
4146) (32-19-1,162) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Up 3. BLACK ANDARUS bested CRYPT KEEPER in
a popular 2 minute gruesome Challenge bout. Well, gosh, Crypt Keeper has been having
problems lately, and I heard he might not even get to keep the, you know, crypt.
LADY EMILY (33-6626) (19-12-1,152) of LUROCIANS II challenged IMMORTAL (49-2905)
(47-86-1,143) of RPG'S. Down 9. LADY EMILY overpowered IMMORTAL in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. Because of having really, really good manners, which
makes some people nervous. Especially when you put them at ease.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (28-24-0,175) of SHADOWCIRCLE challenged TRAVELLER (49-
2866) (68-73-2,180) of RPG'S. Up 5. SHEA MAGEBORN demolished TRAVELLER in a 2
minute one-sided Challenge bout. AND took his credit card so he can't leave home
because of not having it.
RILLION (36-5545) (29-15-1,199) tW of THE CHADS challenged SMUG BUG (55-2900)
(37-55-0,184) of RHYME TYME. Down 15. RILLION tW unbelievably bested SMUG BUG in a
popular 2 minute brutal Challenge brawl. I believe it. Why not?
ELRORAN (12-4386) (41-29-2,187) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged TRYURLUCK (61-
1029) (47-38-1,187) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Straight across. We need more like this.
ELRORAN lost to TRYURLUCK in an exciting 2 minute bloody Challenge fray. Well, okay,
maybe we don't need more if people are going to lose fights. I think what we need
is, more straight across challenges AND ties so both people win.
BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (41-25-2,200) of DARKMOON challenged MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-
1744) (40-52-4,205) of BALLROOM BLITZ. Up 5. BEAG MAGDA handily defeated MR.
TESTOSTERONE in a 2 minute uneven Challenge fight. Well, okay, but does Beag dance?
I mean, Mr. Testosterone dances beautifully, with lots of swooping and twirling.
WHITE KNIGHT (58-5971) (57-43-2,208) of CRUSADE challenged ROYLAND (56-3380)
(56-41-0,233) of REDHORSE. Up 25. WHITE KNIGHT demolished ROYLAND in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge brawl. It just SHOWS. Because of the Knight being White, you
know, and White Knights only beat up really bad people. It's in their job
description.
MILQUETOAST (33-5313) (63-39-2,202) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged TITAN (21-5070)
(35-21-1,186) of BLACKEST PRIDE. Down 16. MILQUETOAST devastated TITAN in an
exciting 1 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. This was too fast. I didn't have
time to be excited.
LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928) (33-23-3,199) of LUROCIANS II challenged MOONJUMPER
(16-3062) (55-87-1,190) of PUNNY AMINALS. Down 9. LORD LIGHTSPEED defeated
MOONJUMPER in an exciting 3 minute Challenge match. This was very fast, too, but it
was fast for longer, so it was, you know, more exciting.
DR. SCUM (15-1968) (47-46-2,209) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q challenged MOONRACER (50-
3206) (34-29-1,214) of MISFIT TOYS. Up 5. DR. SCUM overpowered MOONRACER in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge melee. Moonracer was most challenge, remember? And there
will be chariot races later. Because of all the horses.
MALICE (15-3729) (34-27-0,185) of MISCELLANEA challenged GNU WORLD ORDER (16-
3948) (60-56-3,188) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. Up 3. MALICE lost to GNU WORLD ORDER in a
popular 3 minute Challenge fight. So why is Gnu called helpless? I don't get it.
BLACKMYTH (11-4018) (51-31-0,192) of SHADOWS challenged LUMP O'GORE (13-1212)
(86-78-5,200) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 8. BLACKMYTH vanquished LUMP O'GORE in a popular
1 minute gruesome uneven Challenge duel. Lump is always gruesome, because of that
being his, like, middle name.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (31-22-0,195) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN challenged PENDRAGON
(49-2982) (85-69-0,206) of RPG'S. Up 11. SEVERUS SNAPE overcame PENDRAGON in an
action packed 3 minute gruesome Challenge fight. Why was this gruesome? I mean,
instead of gory or, like, plain old bloody?
MIMR (82-3783) (45-34-2,219) of SOL INVICTUS challenged BANKRUPT (71-3786) (39-
14-0,227) of SHADOW GOLD. Up 8. MIMR was luckily beaten by BANKRUPT in an exciting
6 minute bloody Challenge struggle. And now Mimr can't pass Go and collect $200,
which isn't much anymore anyway. But still.
And the TV challenges, which if you have it, you should use it.
MELTDOWN (32-3836) (24-3-0,160) of WOLF PACK II TV challenged DARK OMEGA (21-
4983) (40-39-0,168) of LORDS OF SHADOWS. Up 8. MELTDOWN demolished DARK OMEGA in a
1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. I melted dark chocolate yesterday. It
was an accident, and made a totally albendranious mess.
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (47-27-3,205) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q TV challenged VALKYRIE
(17-5544) (73-48-0,230) of ARCTIC GUARDS. Up 25. E.A.POLECAT devastated VALKYRIE in
a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. I am so glad Edgar Allen has a TV
challenge! He is, like, totally cute, you know.
SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (22-2-0,211) of CASTLE BLACK TV challenged MELKOR (13-
1821) (34-12-0,212) of SILMARILLIAD. Up 1. SETHRA LAVODE viciously subdued MELKOR
in a popular 3 minute gruesome Challenge match. We have a lot of people here with
amazing records, don't we? That didn't used to happen so much.
And for being Lord Marshall: NEMESIS (4-5115) (48-8-0,306) of CHAMPIONS TV
challenged GROGGY DOGGY (55-223) (112-169-0,249) of RHYME TYME. Down 57. NEMESIS
devastated GROGGY DOGGY in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. Somebody
should put that doggy in the window or, you know, in the doghouse. To retire and
find a good home, because of being really done here. And congratulations to Nemesis.
I'm kind of surprised I'm done finally.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Rillion -- I hope you know that I highly respect you, but you can not compete with me
in ADM. If you keep challenging me, that is just that many more challenges I'm going
to send you. BTW, have you noticed that my percentage has only gone up since I
activated more warriors? Must be luck, huh? -- Sylvester
Sethra -- How could I not notice? Hopefully, you are off to Gateway or Primus soon!
-- Titan
Bobby Bigfoot -- Then don't make challenges like you did a few turns ago. --
Sylvester F.
All who read and write personal ads, etc. -- I am moving out of my apartment by
August 31st and I still don't know where I'm moving into as I write this. So no time
for personal ads this cycle. -- Bobby Bigfoot
Good luck with the move! -- Ed., feeling sympathetic
That is, you know, more than some people wrote.
White Knight -- It might 'help' but it won't be enough. -- Steve Dallas
Morrolan -- Yeah, but I'm not very good either, so I'll take what I can get. --
Elroran
E.A. Polecat -- Thanks for the win. I hope you got what you were looking for from
that TV challenge. You owe me a martini. -- Steve Dallas
With an olive and a toothpick, I hope! They're not as good as umbrellas. As
if! But they're better than nothing.
Melkor -- Bah, you are a lame excuse for a warrior. I just wish I wasn't so lame
that I couldn't beat you. -- Rillion tW
Yeah and I wish you had a different name so I could retire you, sometimes we don't
get what we wish for.... -- Rillion tM
A name-change-o-rama?
Valkyrie -- I dread fighting you. You are a bane to our squad. -- Severus Snape
So avoid. That's what it's, you know, for.
Moonracer -- Well done, I just wish you had something to teach while beating me. --
Elroran
Kelos -- An unfortunate match up for you. Better luck in the future. -- Milquetoast
Fodderer -- I hope that leaves a nice nasty scar. All Frothingslosher warriors
deserve to be as ugly as their managers. -- Tyvin
Redfox -- Was that your original color or has all the blood stained you that way? --
Zenar
Bluey -- Huh, I guess my strategy is actually good against a certain type of warrior.
I'll need to find something less effective. -- Venric
Brangus -- Time for me to move up, I'm get tired of seeing all the same names turn
after turn. -- Hermes
Dream Warrior -- Your manager's dream, maybe, but not mine! (ruefully) Ouch. --
Raven Eyes
Debby -- I wouldn't have refused a chocolate peanut turtle. -- Raven Eyes
But only dark chocolate. Milk negates the health benefits. -- Ed.
But it says here that milk is GOOD for you. At least, if there's no chocolate
with it.
Panic Attack -- You certainly managed to stir Madbull up! -- Redfox
Dubijn -- Ah, that was a train I have been waiting for lo these many weeks and
months. -- Moonjumper
P.S. If you were drunk during the fight, I'd really like to know what you were
drinking. I'll try it myself.
Zenar -- (sigh) One of these days, I'm going to convince Jorja that I'm really not
cut out for this stuff. Thanks for your help in that line. -- Redfox
Hermes -- Just about what I would have EXPECTED from a Delarquan Elf. Bah! --
Brangus
P.S. Hmm, I just noticed the sandals with little wings. Never seen anything like
THAT before, but it's probably some kind of insidious Elf thing, right?
Debby Tonte -- Fortunately, I like caramel. -- Redfox
Me, too.
Woundwort -- Sorry, but I simply didn't have a skill to spare. If you want to drop
by the guildhouse, though, I could teach you something unusual. -- Raven Eyes
Artemisia -- (mortified look) I didn't mean to cause a scene in the bar. -- Redfox
P.S. How about fermented mare's milk? That's what Rirorni usually drink when they
want to get relaxed.
Mymid el Naimis -- Now that wasn't a fair fight. It wouldn't be the first time I've
takin' to the sands with a bit of a mornin' head, but there was a mysterious stranger
who was so sympathetic before the fight, gave me a swig of the hair o' the dog, and I
swear the drink was drugged. Why else was I unable to lift me sword? Either that
stranger was from your guild or he'd bet on you. -- Lump o' Gore
Probably a bookie. You know, Carlos.
Lord Fireflash -- You're big for an elf. Mean, too. -- Mila
Jolean -- Your record says you have 23 fights. I take it you're a tourney
specialist? I don't think people like you should be matched against us ordinary
immortals. -- Loping Wolf
Why not?
Venric -- Maybe you should try something new in life. -- Loping Wolf
Funny Bunny -- You couldn't have showed me one of those last couple of skills I need?
Well anyway, I think you need a new desperation strategy. -- Royland
Milquetoast -- (sigh) Now that's cutting the legs out from under me all right. Don't
forget to tell your manager to change your training regimen. -- Kelos
19 August 2003
Citizens of Ghea (only the ignorant fail to note Lirith Kai is not in Alastari),
no new day is rising, but the sun is setting on just another beautiful evening.
While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City.
Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all
gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they
had masks, who cares.
Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in
Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by
those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the
same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many
years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by
pests.
Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own
little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except
to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you
choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs.
Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed.
Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents
will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target
those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home.
So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous
Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and
bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.
Defenders of Aruak

FACE-TO-FACE XXXII
Our next Winter Face-to-Face will be held on Martin Luther King weekend, Friday
through Sunday, 16-18 January 2004, at the Embassy Suites in Tempe, Arizona (4400 S
Rural Rd). Room rates are $119.00 per night, 1-2 occupancy, which includes breakfast.
The rooms are blocked. The reservations number is 480-897-7444; tell them you're with
the "Reality Simulations Face to Face Convention" block. Our room block will be
released in mid-December, so please make sure you reserve your room before then.
There is a free shuttle to the airport, as well as free parking. The hotel is
located down the freeway in Tempe. All rooms have high speed internet (for an extra
charge). There is a fitness center, jacuzzi, and pool, and of course a bar and
restaurant inside the hotel. And there's Denny's right across the street. Look for
transportation info in the tournament information sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
November/early December.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!
