Zukal:
Ghenis watched the ship _Relentless_ ease out into the channel and brushed his
hands together. It was bound for Niatoli to further certain interests of the dark
cult. On it was Veleks, and Cousin Og, who would look after the small thief...one
way or another. Which freed him to attend to other matters.
First of those other matters was a meeting with Pelishtekan, the Ferencian who
was currently the 'chief priest' of the cult. Ghenis scowled to hide his grimace of
disgust. He didn't like the Ferencian. In fact, he loathed the man. But it wasn't
necessary to like him, not really. As long as Pelishtekan did his job, nothing else
counted.
And right now, the man's job was to explain what manner of creature, monster, or
whatever was hunting over the lands just north of Zukal. And how the damned thing
could be fought and destroyed. It was in the way of certain plans that he had made
for the benefit of the dark cult...and of himself, of course. The dark power did not
expect his minions to work for nothing but the joy of it.
Ghenis left the waterfront behind and wove his way through the twisted and
noisome alleys of one of Zukal's poorest districts. The cult always had its centers
among the homes of the poor. They were the ones who had something to gain from it,
and nothing to lose, from shaking up the old order, after all. Ghenis smiled just a
little. He liked shaking things up.
The cult was headquartered in a tall narrow building squeezed between other tall
narrow buildings. The cellar, which was dark and always damp and divided into tiny
rooms no more than six feet square, was used for...storage. More or less. The
ground floor, reached by going down half a dozen steps from street level, was the
shrine itself. The level above that was where the main work of the cult was done,
the plotting and planning, the gathering of information, the good stuff. Above that,
two floors of small rooms where members of the cult lived if they couldn't do better
for themselves. And on the top floor, the pigeons that carried messages from points
as distant as Zuwayza and Murska in the north, Rocanis, Xochithlan, and even Tricorus
in the south. Most people had no idea how far the cult reached.
Which was another source of amusement to Ghenis. The authorities here in Zukal,
the very heart of the cult, had no idea that it was anything more than a handful of
dissatisfied commoners meeting to worship some petty godling. Ha! If Bey Sekahos
knew how near he stood to the rim of disaster, how fast he was sliding down the slope
into hell--! Even the Bandit Princes, who had a clearer understanding of their city,
didn't know that the cult was gaining power daily and would soon be ready to make its
move. IF the monster north of the city could be dealt with.
Ghenis pushed open the door and stepped toward Pelishtekan's office.
Near Malcorn:
The finger of light slid across the surface of the tall stone and touched the
worn carvings, which leaped into sudden clarity. The little clearing, which had been
empty except for Lord Malcorn and Tiljanz al Burgos, the young Karnhorn diplomat, was
suddenly full of shadows. Or something. Tiljanz could feel the weight of a dozen
minds thinking about him--calculating minds, hostile minds, hungry ones. He held
himself still and quiet with difficulty. This was Lord Malcorn's meeting; he himself
was just present as a witness.
Words came out of the darkness, hollow as caves, clear as trumpets. "Why are
you here, Malcorn?"
"To demand that you enforce your side of the agreement we made, Dregur," the
lord of Malcorn replied. If a great tree had spoken, its voice might have sounded
like that.
"Our side? What have we, the true and original lords of all the land between
the lakes, to 'enforce' at the command of an ephemeral like you?"
"Do not play games with me. A deal was made and sworn under just such a moon,
that the dregur would attack only those who entered this land at the command of the
Easterner Inzolas. In return for this, you were released from the Silent Place."
"And if we choose now to disregard that 'deal' you speak of?" Idle inquiry.
"The Silent Place is still there."
"You think you could return us to that captivity?" Scorn and amusement. "You?"
"If you do not keep your side of the agreement," now Malcorn's voice was like
iron, cold black iron, "I will return you to that captivity. Me." At that moment,
Tiljanz did not doubt that Blackie would do just that, whatever the cost to himself.
"We did make an oath." The voice was the same, but different. A different
dregur speaking, Tiljanz thought. "The oath is a binding already. He could do it."
Warning, cool consideration.
"Because a few of us have chosen to Hunt freely, as we used to? Unfair! This
land was OURS. If we stretch out our hand to take it back, where is the injustice in
that?" Passion.
"The injustice is in the breaking of our oath. The land itself will reject an
oathbreaker. It has always been so." Stern command. "We must keep our part of the
bargain, or by our failure we release Lord Malcorn from his. And he could then
return us to the Silent Place, if he is willing to pay the price." A pause. "And
you can see that he is so willing."
Objection. "Those who Hunt alone will not be called back to the kennel, even by
you."
Unyielding command. "Then I myself will lead a Hunt against them."

In the Far West:
The ship approaching them was running on oars; it had no mast that they could
see, but two banks of oars dipped and rose in practiced unison, glittering as
sunlight hit the water falling from the blades. It was considerably longer than the
gladiators' vessel, and narrower in proportion, but there was still room on that lean
deck for a cluster of armed men. It was headed straight for them, picking up speed
as it came.
Vurand cursed. "That's no pirate," the Orc said, turning to run toward the
stern of the ship. "That's a damned warship, and it's going to ram us!"
Ashon Chang and Werre had also seen the approaching ship, and Chang was running
toward the bow; he passed Vurand half way. "Not enough wind to avoid them," he said
in passing.
Jammies looked both ways, uncertain what it would be best to do, and decided to
wait for orders from someone more knowledgeable.
Reaching Herlas and Rughal, who were glaring at each other near the bow, Ashon
Chang said, "We are about to be rammed by a warship. Can either of you do anything
about it?"
Both men jerked and looked toward the approaching vessel.
"I can do little with the Arcanum in this state," Herlas said, "and nothing with
that barbarian watching me--"
Rughal, who looked as though he hadn't eaten or slept since Shania disappeared,
glared at him suspiciously. "What did you have in mind?"
"I might be able to do something with...oh, fog, maybe, and wind," the Fratsfan
said thoughtfully. "Weather is easily influenced, being naturally so unstable. But
we could as well crash into those rocks ourselves, running blind," he added.
Rughal glanced at the rocks, which were tall chimneys and small islands rising
straight out of the sea, then at the approaching warship. "A fog to hide both us and
that other ship," he said, "and on a count of ten after the fog appears, a strong
wind at an angle to take us through that gap." He indicated a passage between two
islands with a tilt of his head, not wanting to point and be seen from the attacking
ship. "Ashon, tell Werre. On the count of ten after the fog, change course--"
"To pass between those two islands, which we won't see until we're right on
them, but you're correct, it's a chance worth taking." The samurai turned and raced
back to the stern.
"I don't know if I'll have the strength to hold the fog and especially the wind
for long," Herlas warned. "I don't want to be rammed or captured, but my power has
limits."
Rughal bared his teeth in a hard grin. "I'll help you."
"But--!"
"Or stop you. Your choice."
Herlas said something under his breath. It might have been swearing. He put
his hands over his face for a moment, then straightened up and glanced at Rughal.
"Very well. I begin."
It began with a little haze, just the thinnest veil of sun-gilded mist. Nothing
to cause the most wary of mariners any concern. Rughal could see sweat forming on
Herlas' face and decided that it was time to join in. He gripped the Fratsfan's
shoulders, focused his mind and hiu, and visualized himself as a wall at the man's
back, bracing him in the effort he was making.
Herlas responded immediately. The mist shimmered and suddenly turned to a heavy
fog. Rughal began counting out loud while the wizard groped for the reins of the
wind. The ship wallowed underfoot as the wind that had been driving it faltered,
then quickened again as the count reached ten.

Shania Silverstar stared at the stone for several minutes. It was...no longer a
thing of power. No longer the Eye of the West. Dull-surfaced, lightless, dead. She
set it gently back in the niche these people had appointed for it. As soon as her
hands lifted from the stone, a faint crazing ran over the surface, deepened, and
suddenly the stone collapsed into a pile of dust.
"Well, that is one question answered," she murmured. "I won't have to tell the
people here that the stone is dead. They'll be able to see for them--"
She turned at a cry of alarm and fury from the doorway.
The man, the priest, who had spoken to her before stood there, staring. "Woman,
what have you done?" he demanded.
Shania raised an eyebrow. "I have absorbed the essence of the stone," she said
coolly. "I am now...the Eye of the West."
"No! That's impossible!"
"It's the truth." It seemed likely that he would attack her in his shock and
rage, and she readied herself to defend. She was a mage of no small ability, though
her power was currently much below normal, and the arena had trained her to use her
hands as weapons. She was aware, also, that with the power from the stone had come
certain abilities--there was no time to explore the possibilities, but some of them
were bound to be useful in combat. If this fool thought she was defenseless, he
would be surprised. Very surprised.
The man rushed at her and grabbed the front of her shift, presumably to shake
her. She swept up one arm to block and break away his grip, chopped into the side of
his neck with the edge of her hand, and as he began to fall away, snapped a kick into
his side. His collapse was gratifying, but there was no time to stand around and
admire her handiwork. He had no sword but did carry a dagger, which she
appropriated. An obsidian blade and a gold-inlaid handle. Probably ceremonial.
Well, it would still kill at need, no doubt. She took his outer robe, as well,
because it had a hood that would conceal her pale hair; she had a suspicion that
these people were all or mostly dark.
By the time she'd gotten the robe off him, he was beginning to twitch. Shania
looked at him thoughtfully, then hit him again on the side of the head behind his
ear, using the butt of his dagger. He subsided. She briefly contemplated tearing
his undergarment into strips and bind him, but it would take too long. She had to be
away from here NOW, before the other priests--there were bound to be others--showed
up to assist at the sacrifice.
She tucked the dagger into the sleeve of her borrowed robe, where it would be
instantly available at need, and opened the door.

Not Lirin Kiv:
The carriage moved through the streets slowly, as though the driver was feeling
his way in the fog. The fog wasn't heavy enough to justify that kind of groping
progress, but Shylock kept quiet. No point in berating the driver. Besides, the
Lord Protector was also making full use of the chance to stare around. So was
Clemenda, he noted, well, that was okay, too. He didn't normally like people around
him to be TOO alert, but in this peculiar situation, no telling what might be
significant and who might notice it first.
The temple to Somebody Who Wasn't Mantor vanished behind them. Shylock counted
turns and blocks of buildings and finally set his teeth against possible disaster and
looked toward where the arena should have been. Hmm. Not the same structure, but
there were points of similarity.
It might be an arena.
He could hope so. There were things about the gladiatorial system on the Isle
and off it that he didn't like, that he KNEW he could have arranged better, but at
least it would provide a point of contact where he and whoever lived in this world
could begin to understand each other. And understanding--up to a point--was
important. It was the first step to power and control. And power and control were
essential; without them, a man was a mere puppet in the hands of others...such as
Sheila Greywand. If this world had no Sheila Greywand...the possibilities were
enticing. He might decide to stay here.
But first, he had to establish contacts.
Shylock stepped down from the carriage and turned to give Clemenda a hand. Not
that she needed help, but it made a good appearance. And so did she. Her clothing
was more restrained than an Adantri would wear, but she looked good in it. She would
also look good out of it.... He suppressed that thought sternly. Not now. Right
now, he needed to meet people and find out where they were, why, and what, if
anything, could be done about it.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
It was an arena, more or less. But the warriors who competed here, Shylock
decided, could not reasonably be called "gladiators." At least, Master Dan Shao, who
was approximately the arenamaster, rejected that term vigorously and with many
scornful comments about the "depravity of the Thallians, with their lust to see the
blood of others."
"We are Champions," Dan Shao said sternly. "Every member of this community is a
champion of his city and style. We fight here as an offering to the great god
Mantor, and to further the development of our various styles."
Shylock nodded. Basically, that was the attitude that many of the warriors in
Lirin Kiv took, although the system itself didn't support such a position. He
sometimes wondered how Lirith Kai had come to allow the arenas into its cities, since
the philosophy behind them was so alien to the native culture. No doubt Sheila
Greywand had brought pressure to bear on the Emperor. He'd heard she did things like
that, and he could believe it. Sheila Greywand was definitely someone who understood
power and enjoyed using it. That, too, was something to pursue at another time. For
now....
"I don't understand how you got here," Dan Shao said, scowling suspiciously.
"Magic, I suppose." His voice became deeply disapproving.
"I suppose it must have been," Shylock agreed. "But it wasn't OUR magic. We
had simply set out for dinner in a neighboring town, and the world as we knew it
vanished, leaving us here."
"Some kind of interdimensional gate." The arenamaster's disapproval deepened.
"What do you propose to do about it?"
"In what sense?" Shylock asked cautiously.
"An unregistered gate is a Bad Thing!" Dan Shao thundered. "You, as the people
most closely connected with it, have the responsibility of closing it. Best to waste
no time about it, either."
"With us on the other side, I suppose," the gladiator grumbled.
"Well..." Dan Shao looked at Clemenda appreciatively, "that isn't essential.
It's the gate itself that matters."

Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hail, Free Blades!
Well, six turns and counting on the throne other than Xerxes did give me a
little scare in our fight! Good show! However, it was not enough and I was able to
turn it around on him. I am not sure who got my challenge this time, so it will be a
surprise to all. Well, see you back here next turn...I hope!

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
We're OFFICIALLY fall now, did you know that? I didn't realize, I mean, I knew
it was, like, the end of the summer pretty much, but I didn't know it was OFFICIAL.
I'll bet SHE came up with that. And we're going to have the OFFICIAL fall tourney
soon, too. Just a social whorl. Or something. Except it was cloudly today, and the
trees are all still green, like they aren't paying attention. I wish *I* didn't have
to pay attention.
But anyway, here's some stuff that the scribes paid attention to for me.
Blackest Pride was avoided by Demons of Darkness. Is this supposed to be, you know,
a surprise?
Mojo-Jojo of Eastern Horde got the most challenges, but I don't know what he did
with them.
We had fifty-two fights, which is, like, down again. Does this mean next time
is up again, and we're going to go up and down like Olaf talks about? I don't mind,
I just want to know. And twenty-eight challenge matches, but only FOUR TV challenges
went through. Gosh.
Five fights were action-packed, ten were exciting (not the same ones), two
standbys fought, one person died, and five fights tied for being longest at just four
minutes.
So, anyway, here is the fights.
LOPING WOLF (56-1796) (52-93-0,56) of REDHORSE fought LUCIFREYJA (103-40) (19-
21-1,90) of Other People. LOPING WOLF lost to LUCIFREYJA in a popular 2 minute
struggle. This made the standbys all feel good, so thank you.
CENTURION (71-3432) (16-11-1,47) of 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS fought AGRO (29-4314) (22-
29-1,76) of CROC FILES. CENTURION slimly lost to AGRO in a popular 4 minute gory
brawl. Only slim? This should be, you know, a FAT loss. Everybody likes a fat
loss.
RAVEN (71-3435) (16-20-0,75) of 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS fought DIRT KNAP (15-4418)
(20-3-2,64) of UNKNOWNS XX. RAVEN overpowered DIRT KNAP in an exciting 1 minute one-
sided brawl. I didn't know about ravens in the arctic. Arctic is like on the Great
Glacier or something, right? All white. And I thought ravens are black.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (27-21-0,94) of CROC FILES fought ON MY WAY (61-3154) (14-3-
0,61) of SADISTS F2F. GRAHAM was overpowered by ON MY WAY in an exciting 2 minute
bloody one-sided struggle. Crocodile boots. Or alligator.
SWEET CHASTITY (35-504) (34-27-1,100) of 22 ACACIA AVENUE fought BRANGUS (16-
4162) (24-34-1,73) of PUNNY AMINALS. SWEET CHASTITY overcame BRANGUS in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute contest. And he never even knew what hit him. I could tell.
CRYPT KEEPER (15-4146) (32-21-1,136) of GRAVEYARD GLORY fought ZENAR (12-4043)
(24-19-1,143) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. CRYPT KEEPER was subdued by ZENAR in a popular
3 minute gory battle. Did you know that when a crypt keeper comes out into the air,
he can't get a tan, just sunburned? That is so sad!
HERMES (58-6016) (18-8-0,129) of MYTHICAL fought LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (26-
28-0,100) of LUROCIANS II. HERMES subdued LORD FIREFLASH in an exciting 1 minute
conflict. Gosh, and the sandals got all messed up. I mean, it's hard to get blood
off the little wings, even WITH cold water. Do you foot wash instead of, you know,
hand wash?
REDFOX (13-4197) (41-60-0,123) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought SUPERIOR FORCES (33-
4543) (57-85-2,137) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. REDFOX overpowered SUPERIOR FORCES in
an exciting 1 minute uneven competition. If he's going to retire, this is the time,
because of actually winning a fight, and against a superior force, too. Duplicated,
even.
SCOURGE (74-2857) (24-19-1,174) of DARK ANGELS fought SAMPSA (31-4233) (22-5-
2,104) of SOL INVICTUS. SCOURGE beat SAMPSA in an action packed 1 minute bout. I
thought a scourge was like Attila the Hunk or something.
TESSERACK (33-6641) (28-11-0,156) of SHADOW X fought MILA (55-29) (50-86-0,102)
of ROCANIS RIDERS. TESSERACK subdued MILA in an action packed 1 minute fight. And
folded the funny hat into five dimensions, which made it look very strange.
CHAOS LICH (15-4132) (39-26-0,201) of GRAVEYARD GLORY fought HAYSEED X-IV (82-
6120) (18-9-1,159) of PROJECT HAYSEED. CHAOS LICH was easily killed by HAYSEED X-IV
in a popular 1 minute one-sided match. Which just SHOWS that liches, or is it
lichees? Anyway, that they're kind of flimsy, you know? Knocked down by hay.
XERXES (67-2429) (42-35-2,201) of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE fought TESEN (12-4211)
(38-37-1,163) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. XERXES devastated TESEN in an action packed 1
minute mismatched match. It's the x thing. I don't know why, but it is. There's a
note about it on the program.
HOUSE MOUSE (55-221) (108-170-2,200) of RHYME TYME fought HEL (82-14331) (29-28-
0,198) of ARCTIC GUARDS. HOUSE MOUSE was handily defeated by HEL in a popular 1
minute mismatched duel. Some people just do NOT want mouses in their houses, and I
don't blame them, because mouses are not, you know, CLEAN around the house. As if!
KELOS (55-30) (53-78-3,188) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought DARK OMEGA (21-4983) (40-
41-0,165) of LORDS OF SHADOWS. KELOS was vanquished by DARK OMEGA in an exciting 1
minute mismatched duel. You see? This is what happens when you don't get enough
sun. A shadow comes along and vanquishes you.
HINDENBIRD (49-1277) (38-21-0,196) of PETS ON FIRE fought CREED (64-3997) (66-
44-0,196) of GROOVE MERCHANTS. HINDENBIRD was vanquished by CREED in an exciting 1
minute one-sided match. With a fire extinguisher.
KOOSH BALL (71-3536) (36-25-0,192) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought MOONJUMPER (16-
3062) (55-89-1,191) of PUNNY AMINALS. KOOSH BALL was savagely defeated by MOONJUMPER
in an exciting 3 minute competition. Well, of course. I mean, I've SEEN people with
koosh balls, and they DO get savage. Vicious even.
LORD GALRON (33-5450) (21-12-3,186) of LUROCIANS II fought JULIUS (64-3641) (66-
74-2,166) of UNDER DURESS. LORD GALRON vanquished JULIUS in an action packed 1
minute one-sided bout. And duressed him a lot more.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (29-25-0,181) of SHADOWCIRCLE fought ELRORAN (12-4386)
(41-31-2,180) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. SHEA MAGEBORN was overpowered by ELRORAN in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided match. If you're overcome by a Demon of Darkness,
does this mean you can't get a tan?
BLADE RUNNER # (33-4544) (83-59-4,199) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought SNAP
CRACKLE PUP (49-738) (39-35-1,194) of PETS ON FIRE. BLADE RUNNER # was subdued by
SNAP CRACKLE PUP in an exciting 3 minute struggle. Imagine when the Pup grows up to
be a whole dog!
AZREAL ELS III (4-4482) (26-15-2,206) of EASTERN HORDE fought NEBUCHADNEZZER
(15-4097) (36-30-0,185) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. AZREAL ELS III was bested by
NEBUCHADNEZZER in a 2 minute battle. One Neb, not both. Is it the double zee that
makes us have two? Does the other one have two zees?
BLACKMYTH (11-4018) (53-31-0,229) of SHADOWS fought MADBULL (13-4198) (50-79-
1,193) of CARDOW HUNTERS. BLACKMYTH demolished MADBULL in a popular 1 minute uneven
contest. Oh, good, now he'll be REALLY mad, what with being demolished and all.
Everyone will be so glad. As if!
TOUCH MY MONK, EH? (12-5112) (32-21-0,233) of ESTIMATED PROPHETS fought SMUG BUG
(55-2900) (37-57-0,187) of RHYME TYME. TOUCH MY MONK, EH? beat SMUG BUG in a 2
minute fray. Smug is never good it. It's like a red flag that won't wash out, even
with cold water.
VALKYRIE (17-5544) (74-49-0,215) of ARCTIC GUARDS fought HATHU (103-32) (5-1-
0,250) of Other People. VALKYRIE beat HATHU in a 2 minute bout. And the other
standby, which she lost. So they're 1-1. That isn't so bad, there are lots of
people who'd like a record like that!
STEEL CLOTH (56-1745) (97-103-3,258) of PITT GLADIATORS fought TRYURLUCK (61-
1029) (49-38-1,203) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. STEEL CLOTH was overpowered by TRYURLUCK in a
popular 1 minute gory one-sided match. Does this mean Steel Cloth got rusty?
And the challenge matches, which I had a TERRIBLE time getting them in order.
At least, I hope they're in order, but if they aren't, then it's too bad.
MILQUETOAST (33-5313) (65-39-2,240) of BLOOM COUNTY challenged E.A.POLECAT (15-
2644) (49-27-3,260) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Up 20. MILQUETOAST viciously subdued
E.A.POLECAT in a popular 2 minute Challenge duel. But Polecats can be vicious, too,
without even a sword. So watch out!
BEAG MAGDA (12-4380) (42-26-2,199) of DARKMOON challenged MR. TESTOSTERONE (70-
1744) (41-53-4,210) of BALLROOM BLITZ. Up 11. BEAG MAGDA devastated MR.
TESTOSTERONE in an exciting 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. I think this was
probably because of Mr. wearing his ballroom dancing shoes, which are, you know,
slippery.
MIMR (82-3783) (46-35-2,216) of SOL INVICTUS challenged RAVEN EYES (12-2709)
(63-81-0,218) of SWEET MAGIC. Up 2. MIMR was defeated by RAVEN EYES in a 2 minute
Challenge match. Was it sweet?
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (43-33-0,197) of DARKMOON challenged LUMP O'GORE (13-1212)
(87-79-5,203) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 6. WOUNDWORT viciously subdued LUMP O'GORE in an
action packed 2 minute Challenge fight. Worted him all over. Worse even than Toads!
ANTHRAXUS (33-5723) (26-18-1,184) of DEATH HORDE challenged LADY EMILY (33-6626)
(21-12-1,184) of LUROCIANS II. Straight across. ANTHRAXUS was devastated by LADY
EMILY in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge brawl. Did you make him drink tea with pink
cakes? I like the pink cakes, because they're strawberry. Strawberry is good.
D (82-44) (23-11-0,166) of EASTERN HORDE 4 challenged FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (81-
118-1,174) of RHYME TYME. Up 8. D was overpowered by FUNNY BUNNY in a 1 minute
uneven Challenge fray. *I* think this is because of him not having a real name. And
Funny laughed, and he was, you know, totally mogrified.
PARTY'S OVER (75-2179) (37-30-0,236) of EASTERN HORDE challenged STEVE DALLAS
(33-5314) (68-32-0,275) of BLOOM COUNTY. Up 39. PARTY'S OVER was handily defeated
by STEVE DALLAS in a 3 minute Challenge fight. You see? Some people just have it.
I mean, if Steve says the party is NOT over, it is totally still going on.
ROCK A BYE (33-4653) (49-35-3,208) of EASTERN HORDE challenged LORD LIGHTSPEED
(33-2928) (35-23-3,220) of LUROCIANS II. Up 12. ROCK A BYE bested LORD LIGHTSPEED
in a popular 4 minute Challenge contest. It was a good lullaby. I went to sleep
myself.
TRASH QUAM (19-3751) (29-23-2,196) of EASTERN HORDE 3 challenged TYVIN (60-5382)
(44-36-1,195) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Down 1. TRASH QUAM slimly won victory over
TYVIN in a popular 3 minute brutal Challenge bout. I kind of liked the Quam Master.
Better than Trash, I mean, not that Trash is bad, if you put it in the litter
barrels, but think what it would be like all over the beach! Speckled tans.
VENRIC (60-5709) (21-21-0,94) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 challenged BEER (71-3539)
(18-20-0,38) of STUFF I BROUGHT. Down 56. VENRIC vanquished BEER in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge fray. Lots of warriors do that to beer. And other things. Without
even umbrellas in it.
NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821) (19-14-0,94) of BLADES OF WONDER challenged ARTEMISIA
(12-5096) (31-29-0,132) of DARKMOON. Up 38. NEBUCHADNEZZAR viciously subdued
ARTEMISIA in a 3 minute Challenge bout. Two zees again. It's a plot. I can tell.
PARANOIA (9-4557) (16-4-1,193) of DSM4 TV challenged GNU WORLD ORDER (16-3948)
(61-57-3,190) of HELPLESS ANIMALS. Down 3. PARANOIA viciously subdued GNU WORLD
ORDER in a 4 minute Challenge fight. But if, you know, EVERYONE is out to get you,
that means the gnu order AND the old one, so what can you do?
CHIM CHIM (12-4742) (19-14-0,57) of LUROCIANS IV challenged SANDY (22-5829) (22-
14-1,69) of WOMEN OF REALITY. Up 12. CHIM CHIM was overpowered by SANDY in a 1
minute uneven Challenge duel. She's like that. Overpowering.
LORD REDMOND (12-4109) (31-17-1,139) of LUROCIANS IV challenged NIGHTIE KNIGHT
(12-4731) (41-28-1,137) of LOBOTOMATION. Down 2. LORD REDMOND was narrowly defeated
by NIGHTIE KNIGHT in a 2 minute Challenge fight. With embarrassment. I mean, did
you SEE what Nightie was wearing? Or, you know, not wearing.
RED BARON (33-1092) (31-28-3,163) of LUROCIANS II challenged LIMA BEAN FLAMBE
(70-3118) (29-20-0,160) of HEAVE HO!. Down 3. RED BARON overpowered LIMA BEAN
FLAMBE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. Pizza rules. I always knew that.
DREAM WARRIOR (48-1040) (42-17-0,201) of NIGHT'S GUARDIANS TV challenged SEVERUS
SNAPE (18-7146) (33-22-0,235) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN. Up 34. DREAM WARRIOR defeated
SEVERUS SNAPE in a crowd pleasing 2 minute Challenge duel. This is like, you know,
is it a dream or is it a nightmare? I guess it depends on who's got the umbrella.
MELKOR (13-1821) (34-14-0,197) of SILMARILLIAD challenged PANIC ATTACK (9-3624)
(25-13-1,213) of DSM4. Up 16. MELKOR subdued PANIC ATTACK in an exciting 1 minute
Challenge bout. Which is good. I mean, everybody will tell you Panic is Bad. So
you have to subdue it.
FERRET INFERNO (49-361) (40-31-2,207) of PETS ON FIRE challenged DR. SCUM (15-
1968) (49-46-2,248) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Up 41. FERRET INFERNO was demolished by DR.
SCUM in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. Do you know how ferrets work? Well,
if you don't, you should be, you know, glad.
POINTY (16-4427) (34-23-0,120) of HOMERIC MMMMMMS... challenged FRAIL WHALE (55-
1968) (99-153-3,148) of RHYME TYME. Up 28. POINTY viciously subdued FRAIL WHALE in
a popular 4 minute gruesome Challenge match. Well, you know, Frail is, like, totally
frail some days. This was one of them.
BANKRUPT (71-3786) (40-15-0,191) of SHADOW GOLD TV challenged TRY ME NOW (61-
846) (54-48-1,193) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Up 2. BANKRUPT was overpowered by TRY ME NOW
in a 3 minute one-sided Challenge fight. So, you know, it must mean the check really
was in the mail.
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (20-10-0,184) of SHADOW MOD challenged ROYLAND (56-3380)
(56-43-0,188) of REDHORSE. Up 4. BLACK ANDARUS was demolished by ROYLAND in a 1
minute Challenge competition. See? It doesn't SAY he was vicious in the notes, but
i can tell. Or else why would he have demolished? That's vicious.
MORROLAN (7-4400) (35-42-2,177) of DEATHSGATE challenged MOONRACER (50-3206)
(34-31-1,180) of MISFIT TOYS. Up 3. MORROLAN slimly won victory over MOONRACER in a
popular 2 minute Challenge contest. More slim. Does this mean that Morrolan was
slim-fast? To beat a racer, I mean.
MYMID EL NAIMIS (7-4420) (56-22-1,197) of THE DANGER DOGS challenged RILLION
(36-5545) (31-15-1,203) of THE CHADS. Up 6. MYMID EL NAIMIS was beaten by RILLION
in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge fight. This is Rillion tW, so Rillion tM
should be pleased, right? I mean, he won. And the crowd was pleased. So this is
good, right?
NEMESIS (4-5115) (50-8-0,332) of CHAMPIONS challenged GROGGY DOGGY (55-223)
(113-170-0,211) of RHYME TYME. Down 121 for being Lord Marshall. Lord Marshalls get
to do things like this and everybody says it's good that they're giving other people
a chance. It's the triple standard. NEMESIS vanquished GROGGY DOGGY in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge Title fight. The poor Doggy didn't even have a chance to wake
up before the fight was over.
PINE SCENTED WONDER (14-3682) (30-9-1,148) of UNKNOWNS XIX challenged ULTIMATE
FURY (12-5020) (27-13-2,161) of LUROCIANS IV. Up 13. PINE SCENTED WONDER
overpowered ULTIMATE FURY in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. With lots of
sneezing.
SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (23-3-0,207) of CASTLE BLACK TV challenged NORTHERN
LIGHTS (19-3182) (61-29-1,208) of SADISTS II. Up 1. SETHRA LAVODE demolished
NORTHERN LIGHTS in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. She didn't really demolish
them, you know. As if! The bulbs burned out.
WHITE KNIGHT (58-5971) (59-43-2,243) of CRUSADE challenged MOJO-JOJO (12-3867)
(46-36-1,220) of EASTERN HORDE. Down 23. WHITE KNIGHT won victory over MOJO-JOJO in
a 2 minute Challenge fight. I bet MJ wishes somebody else's most challenge got to
him instead.
And the last one: SUE (22-5828) (19-16-0,60) of WOMEN OF REALITY challenged
JOELEAN (97-903) (12-13-4,83) of IVER'S GIRLS. Up 23. SUE beat JOELEAN in a 4
minute Challenge fight. Well, I knew Sue was, you know, tough.
So there is everything, more or less, or at least all you're going to get. And
now I have to go find someplace where the sun is shinging (not here). See you in two
weeks.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Venric -- No, you are not allowed to dedicate a victory to your manager. You have to
dedicate it to one of the gods, or to Lady Greywand. Sorry, but that is the rule. --
Loping Wolf
That is practically blastforme! To say Lady Greywand with the gods, in the same
sentence and all. I mean, gosh!
Party-s Over -- No wonder the party is over. Get a gender, kiddo. I understand
there is a gender attachment warehouse down by the docks in Talahya. -- Royland
Is this gender horrishment?
Ultimate Fury -- Don't forget to tell your manager to change your train. And to give
you a weapon. You're not as good at fisticuffs as you think, laddie. -- Lump o' Gore
P.S. Wait, is there an open-hand contest going on? (checking the newsletter)...
Not that I can see. Then you should get yourself a weapon, my friend.
Tryurluck -- Yes, well, that wasn't very difficult, was it? -- Kelos
Centurion -- Aha! I won! I was the only one who won! Woo hoo! Drinks on me! And
you're more than welcome for the skills! -- Mila
Sylvester -- I think regardless of our actions on the sands and occasional barbed
ads, our rivalry on the sands is not mean spirited. I do enjoy your continual
testing of my warriors despite the lopsided record in your favor. I have no
intention of refraining from challenging you when I think I have the advantage and
realize you will seek to retaliate, which is why I am constantly avoiding your
attempts at arranging fights favorable to you. -- Rillion
Brangus -- The winged sandals are not an elf thing, they are just a really cool
fashion statement. -- Hermes
But they tickle when you're walking along and they flutter.
Kelos -- My training regime will be changed as soon as I find out if I am going to be
inducted to Primus or not. No sense rushing off to Primus if I can get one more
Eligibles tourney in before I go. -- Milquetoast
Sethra Lavode -- Swinging back has never been much of a problem for me, just
defending against your ability to attack. I'm not your typical TP. I was moderately
surprised to see you take that kind of beating and keep going on to win--helluva
fight and congrats. We'll have to dance again sometime. -- Melkor
Milquetoast -- Ouch, impressive. I've never been owned that badly before, not even
by Cosmic Hammer. Well done. -- Melkor
Severus Snape -- Good fight, and congrats. We'll have to do that again. -- DW
All -- Well 4-6 was a little bit of a set back and Rillion moved up as well! Ok,
time to get some wins, boys and girls! -- Shadowgate
Steve Dallas -- Fluke! I had you there! Stupid broken weapon! I was pounding on
you even with my bare hands! I will pay you back for that defeat! -- Sethra Lavode
Snap Crack Pup -- Take that, you hell hound! -- White Knight
Joppa Clubfist -- Well, you showed me! -- Shea Mageborn
E.A. Polecat -- Ouch! Ok mister, this means war! -- Mymid El Naimis
Dr. Scum -- You're not! You seem to be able to actually fight better than I do!
That sure isn't the scum's way...at least I don't profess to be one! -- Bankrupt
Mimr -- As always, you triumph. I can only hope that Madbull doesn't attempt to do
you some unsanctioned injury outside the arena. -- Redfox
Artemisia -- Fair lady, I rejoice, in so far as my condition permits, that my last
match here was against you. -- Redfox, retiring
P.S. Four play?
Bridge?
Gnu World Order -- I'd like to say I gnew I would win that, but I didn't. Good
fight, if you like fights. I'm getting a little burned out on them myself. -- Raven
Eyes
Northern Lights -- Practically blinding you were. Next time, YOU can face north. --
Moonjumper
That's the way lights are right before the bulbs burn out.
The Madness -- You are indeed INSANE, beast-wench, to think that you can defeat one
of the True Blood so easily. Oh yes, it APPEARED so, but appearances can be sadly
deceiving. -- Brangus
Woundwort -- I'll be waiting for you, as soon as I slip into something more
comfortable. -- Raven Eyes
Groggy Doggy -- How have you avoided induction for so long? -- Woundwort
Attacking the mailman before he can deliver the notice. It's, you know, a dog
thing.
Madbull -- I'm gonna miss all your rampaging, if indeed you go inactive. -- Mimr
Touch My Monk Eh? -- I like your ability to hang tough, stay focused and turn the
fight around. -- Beag Magda
Red Fox -- If you go inactive, I don't know who I can try my experimental strategies
on. -- Artemisia
Hedgewick -- Throwing fights? -- Sampsa
Where? Not on the sidewalk? That would be littering.

An Announcement Concerning the Brotherhood of the Blade Alliance:
I have chosen to withdraw my membership from the Brotherhood of the Blade
alliance. The years I have spent in the alliance have been the best of my DM career.
I leave the alliance with many great friends and will always remain close to my
former brethren.
The Brotherhood of the Blade will not skip a beat without my membership. It
remains in very capable hands and its roster is among the strongest in the game.
With the return on some of its founding members to DM, I know the BOB will continue
to grow in strength and prestige in the years to come. -- The Sandman
