Near Barikala:
The Golden Moon, Lady Protector Artemisia commanding, was approaching the Urt
Delta from the northeast as the day drew to a close. Her goal was Zukal, but as soon
as the ship came within sight of land, she would anchor and wait for daylight. The
maze of channels and islands that formed the delta was not something to attempt at
night. At least, not now. A decade ago there had been an intricate network of
beacons that a skilled and familiar pilot could use to reach the city's docks at any
hour, but the invasion from the East had put an end to that. The defenders had
destroyed the beacons to hamper their foes, and the triumphant invaders of Zukal had
neither the knowledge or desire to restore the system.
Artemisia's lip curled. The Easterners called the people of Alastari
barbarians, because many of their cultures were young. But if the 'civilized' old
cultures of the East didn't--or couldn't--restore safe shipping, who was the true
barbarian?
The lookout shouted that land was in sight, and Artemisia turned to squint into
the setting sun. But she was lower than the man on the mast and couldn't see the
dark line of the shore yet. With a shrug, she turned to look the other way,
searching the sky for a warning of the sudden storms that had given this great lake
its name. That horizon was clear, also. She didn't quite trust it, but...the sky
was clear and the wind was steady. Good enough, for now.
When she turned to the west again, she could see land herself, the long, dark
hump of Barikala Island, silhouetted against the crimson sky. The sun vanished from
sight, and its light was replaced by the broad, slightly greenish beam that shot
straight upward from the center of Barikala. Around her, the sailors moved to place
the ship in a safe position and run out the anchors for the night; her first officer
needed no instructions to handle that.
That beam of light over Barikala was also new since the invasion, and Artemisia
wished her friend Beag Magda were here. The Elf understood such things. Or at least
knew how to think about them, because nobody understood just what that blazing beacon
was...other than dangerous. No one who had landed on Barikala in the last few years
had returned from there to tell what they'd seen.
The lookout called down something else that she couldn't hear over the bustling
sounds of sails being lowered and anchor chains creaking off their drums. One of the
sailors halfway down the mast below him shouted up, got an answer, and came hurrying
down.
"Koro says there's something coming out through the delta," the sailor reported.
"He isn't sure what, the light's about gone, but it might be a group of canoes. They
aren't in a main channel, anyway."
Artemisia glanced to the side. Her first officer was there, as he should be.
"We may have an attack coming up," she said quietly.
He nodded and moved off to make sure the crew was ready.
Artemisia tapped her fingers on the hilt of her cutlass, reviewing
possibilities, then shrugged. It was useless to speculate without more information,
and dangerous to formulate plans under such circumstances. She would have to wait
upon events.
Zukal:
Ghenis glared down into the alley where the last of the soldiers were marching
past. Nothing had happened. The dark god he had believed he served had not
responded. The Ferencian was lying to them all. But somewhere, he knew, there was
such a dark demongod, and he vowed to find it. And the Ferencian liar would be the
first sacrifice....
He withdrew carefully from the roof above the alley. It would be a good idea to
get out of Zukal for a while. Out from under that liar Pelishtekan's eye, so that he
could think and lay his plans in relative safety. Niatoli Island, that's where he
would go. The false cult already had a 'mission' there, and Cousin Og would be his,
Ghenis's, first recruit.
The Isle of the Eye:
Beag Magda sat at a small table near the back of the Two Lilies and swirled the
last of the tea in her cup moodily. She had no fault to find with the Lilies, they
knew her here and always gave her the same table. And the tea, as usual, was
excellent. Something was wrong somewhere, but it was less definite--and more
important--than a problem with the service, or a mediocre cup of tea. She was almost
afraid to look into her cup.
That was nonsense. It was only the unknown that should be feared, and once she
read the tea leaves, the problem would not be unknown. Well, it would not be
completely unknown, but tea leaves were a very imprecise method of diagnosis and
prognostication. With a little shake, she threw off the dark mood, emptied the last
swallow of tea into the saucer, and peered into the cup at the leaves clinging to its
bottom and sides.
She could feel the hair trying to rise on the back of her neck. The leaves
seemed to be swimming in a web of shadows. The patterns they formed all indicated as
plainly as tea leaves could that something very dark was impending. But nothing was
clear. Who was menaced, and by what? How soon?
Beag Magda set the cup down very carefully, because her hand was trying to
shake, and laid coins beside it to pay for the tea. She needed more information, and
she couldn't get it here.
Stormcrowe:
Lord Protector Ipecac stalked ashore and glared around for someone to share his
outrage. Anyone who recognized him in time--and Stormcrowe was a small island with a
limited population who generally DID recognize one another--departed hastily. Lady
Protector Snowfall wasn't quite fast enough. "Do you know what HAPPENED?" Ipecac
demanded.
Looking distinctly queasy, Snowfall shook her head.
"My ship was ATTACKED," the warrior from Emetics snapped. He didn't notice when
the shapely woman flinched from his vehemence; people were always doing that around
him. He stalked closer, dropping his voice for privacy. "Monsters," he hissed.
"Demons out of the waves. Half shark, half man, you might say. Others like kraken.
They were summoned by a dark wizard on a black ship. We have to do something about
this."
Snowfall swallowed a couple of times, then said, "Why? And how?"
Ipecac raised his eyebrows. "You want to live on nothing but fish caught in the
harbor?" he asked. "They could blockade us! And what if they decide to come ashore
and attack us here on the island?" He frowned thoughtfully. "Probably it's part of
some Karnhorn plot, and if we don't nip it in the bud, they'll be all over us,
murdering and enslaving. Can't have that."
"No," Snowfall agreed faintly, "we can't have that. But how do we stop them?"
"We fight, of course!" He hesitated, perhaps realizing that such a plan was
lacking in useful details. "All the ships will have to be armed with...catapults,"
he suggested. "And...none of them going out alone. Yes. And we need to find any
wizards on the island and recruit them to help fight, and more importantly to find
out what we're up against. That's a beginning." He nodded firmly. "We need to
start right away!"
Snowfall turned quickly to the rail at the edge of the dock and fed the fish her
lunch, then straightened. "Yes, I can see that. Wizards, catapults, convoys. No
time to waste...."

The Isle of the Eye, Stronghold Academy:
"Time," the old wizard said to his students, "is not a simple matter, especially
when considered in the context of the multiverse. It does not flow at the same speed
in one universe as it does in another. For instance, what seems like months here in
Alastari may be but a moment in the universe which contains Thallia. And to
complicate matters further, a moment here may appear, under other circumstances, to
be months in the Thallian world. This is primarily due to the density of the Chaos
dimension between the universes at the instants of transition, and although it cannot
be reliably calculated, it can be roughly estimated by--"
The student mages bent to their notes.
Picking up where we left off (only a moment for them) at various places in the
Thallian universe:
Scarlatti had expected them to go by ship to some other island, or to the
mainland of this world, whatever it was. But the lizard men were leading the way to
high ground, and from the arrangement of the trees and stones on that knoll, he
realized that the transportation was going to be magical. Teleportation, perhaps--he
had to remind himself that the instability that made teleportation on Ghea so
dangerous did not apply here. Wherever here was. Possibly a true Gate. Would that
mean that the home of the lizard folk was in a different world, just as Ghea was in a
different world from this one?
"If they can open this Gate," Carris Fallstar muttered, "they can open a Gate to
Ghea."
"It's easier to open a Gate that is already there," Fizban pointed out. "As
this one which will lead us to their home clearly is. The Gate to OUR home will have
to be found or created first. We must do this their way--their Gates first."
"That is the bargain we agreed to," Rogan added.
"I wasn't suggesting we break it," Carris snapped. "You humans are too damned
touchy about things like that--which shows your race's basic unreliability. I was
just making an observation."
The oldest of the lizard men, the one that might be a wizard, though his regalia
of bones and shells and odd bits of this and that seemed more like the gear of a
witchdoctor, gestured them forward. They took positions at his direction, along with
an equal number of lizard warriors.
The old lizard shook his rattle and whistled a call into the sky. Power rippled
around him. Around them. The world faded to gray.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
It was bitterly cold.
Fizban huddled into his robe and wished for something warmer. Old men shouldn't
have to be out in weather like this! And whether or not their new associates were
true cold-blooded reptiles, they were not adapted to function at this temperature.
No wonder they'd wanted the Gheans' help. No doubt this frozen wasteland was only a
stepping stone to the lizard men's home, but it must be a sore trial to them. Fizban
turned to speak to the gladiators who were with him.
One of the snowy humps that littered the landscape straightened up to a height
of seven feet and bared its fangs.
Power rippled across the sea, turning blue water to steel gray and the clear sky
to a dome of white glass.
"Sorcery!" the ship's captain gasped. He made a sign to avert ill fortune.
A futile sign, Shylock knew. The power that gripped this ship, the power he
could feel all around him, was too great for such a simple preventive measure. There
was power enough here to turn the world inside out.
And that was what it was doing.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Shylock had heard of waterspouts, though he'd never seen one. He suspected he
was seeing one now--from the inside. The ship seemed to be spiraling along the inner
surface of a tube of glassy water. He couldn't guess how fast they were going, and
he rather thought the concept was meaningless here anyway. His own magical ability
was insufficient to affect anything here--so far. He vowed silently to work HARD to
increase his knowledge and exercise his skill until such matters would NOT be beyond
him. But he could observe, and perhaps learn something from this unique experience.
He glanced around to see how the others on the ship were handling this and
realized that the ship was gone. Or mostly gone. He was riding on the ghostly
outline of a ship which had neither hull nor deck nor sails but only what looked like
a draftsman's rendering of those things, and there was no one with him except
Clemenda.

Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hail, Free Blades!
Well, I missed last turns column AGAIN! Thanks to Shadowgate, you slacker!
Well, after two turns of trying to get a fight with Desecration set up, we pulled it
off.... One hit later it was over. Satisfied? You can't imagine you're going to
beat me after I had all those fights, since the last time we fought, on you. Now I
am not sure who to give a shot for the throne? Let's let fate decide!

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... being a spy reporter isn't easy, you
know. I mean rushing around Alastari all the time. But what do those bums say?
"Hit the road, Debby Tonte. FREE BLADES needs a spy report." Not that I needed to
hit the road, because I was, you know, already here. Oh, well. MVP award for OURS
ROUGE? I still don't know what that means. Did he get Many Violet Pansies? THE
REDBAERS' proud of him after beating CRYPT KEEPER and getting 29 points. If they
know. Talk about yer major upsets! CRYPT KEEPER's match with OURS ROUGE cost him a
loss of 19 points! Ten points out of thin air. That is, like, totally lusory. Like
DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY's BLADE RUNNER # is sweating since he got TV challenged by Lady
Marshall SETHRA LAVODE! He should get, you know, some kind of anti-purserant. This
Lady Marshall is, like, something else! SETHRA LAVODE stopped BLADE RUNNER # dead in
his tracks! If he was making tracks. Maybe he was just standing there.
Oh, gosh, my mom just sent me a, you know, letter. This is too much! She said,
"Debby, slang is low, and I taught you better than that." Like, she thinks I
shouldn't say "like" so much or, you know, "you know," either. But what can I do? I
mean, I don't have TIME to worry about that stuff. You guys don't mind, do you?
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. And the scribes in the office make notes for me, because of being
such cute guys. Which, today's notes say: thirty-eight fights, which is pretty good,
and thirteen challenges, three teevee and ten radio. Nobody died, which is good
because dying is so depressing. I mean, it makes me feel bad for hours if somebody
dies. And only one standby fought, and the longest fight was just five minutes,
which doesn't really count as a long fight. Blackest Pride was avoided by Sol
Invictus. I think there's some kind of light-dark thing going there. Dr. Scum got
the most challenges.
And here are the fights, but not lots of talking about them (only a little)
because of what my mom said. I mean, I'm all tense and, you know, self congious
about it.
BEER (71-3539) (21-29-0,72) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought GOLDIE (29-4395) (16-15-
1,76) of CROC FILES. BEER won victory over GOLDIE in a 1 minute match. Some people
just don't know how to drink.
FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (10-3-0,59) of LUROCIANS XI fought BITTER ALMOND (103-41)
(14-16-4,50) of Some Nice People. FLESH RIPPER handily defeated BITTER ALMOND in a 1
minute mismatched match. Which is why Bitter Almond is so bitter. I mean, everybody
EXPECTS her to lose. This would make anybody feel bad, you know?
WRATH OF ONE (82-11628) (11-2-0,89) of LUROCIANS XII fought LOPING WOLF (56-
1796) (57-100-0,83) of REDHORSE. WRATH OF ONE was beaten by LOPING WOLF in a popular
1 minute duel. Next time, bring the Wrath of Two. Wolfs are tough.
JIMMY THE AINT (82-19733) (20-0-1,61) of BLADE BROTHERS fought WEDNESDAY (16-
5254) (14-12-2,45) of THE DARK TIDES. JIMMY THE AINT was demolished by WEDNESDAY in
a 1 minute one-sided duel. And wait till you hear what, you know, happened to him on
THURSDAY!
SUNGOD DESIGNED ME (43-4270) (22-5-0,100) of WENSINWASIN fought SCHIZOPHRENIC
(9-4595) (16-9-1,60) of DSM4. SUNGOD DESIGNED ME savagely defeated SCHIZOPHRENIC in
an exciting 1 minute match. So tell us, were there really two of Schizophrenic down
there? I mean, sometimes it LOOKED kind of like it. But sometimes not.
SUE (22-5828) (21-20-0,94) of WOMEN OF REALITY fought LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966)
(28-31-0,80) of LUROCIANS II. SUE was devastated by LORD FIREFLASH in a 1 minute
uneven bout. But the Infirmary had lots of aloe vera, so she should be okay by next
time.
AVARICIOUS AVON (63-2388) (24-24-0,143) of TOMATO ENFORCER fought JOELEAN (97-
903) (20-17-4,118) of IVER'S GIRLS. AVARICIOUS AVON savagely defeated JOELEAN in an
exciting 4 minute brutal struggle. It says here on the notes that Joelean is a real
tomato, so is that why Avon was able to, you know, get savage? Because of being
skilled with tomatoes.
TESEN (12-4211) (41-44-1,153) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought SAMPSA (31-4233) (24-
12-2,135) of SOL INVICTUS. TESEN bested SAMPSA in a 1 minute duel. I don't really
know anything about this one except that it wasn't, you know, a mis-match or uneven
or anything.
SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543) (60-94-2,152) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought SANDY (1-
6821) (22-40-1,129) of HOMICIDAL MANIACS. SUPERIOR FORCES overpowered SANDY in a 1
minute one-sided fray. And gosh, was Sandy mad! I mean, totally homicidal, you
know?
RILLION (36-5545) (34-22-1,180) of THE CHADS fought LORD REDMOND (12-4109) (33-
20-1,147) of LUROCIANS IV. RILLION (tW) overpowered LORD REDMOND in a 2 minute one-
sided bout. Which is pretty good for an old chad. And yes, I do know what a chad
is, so there! Except I thought you'd be rounder. And flatter.
JULIUS (64-3641) (70-82-2,173) of UNDER DURESS fought ELVIS (7-612) (33-23-
0,177) of THE ROCKERS. JULIUS was luckily beaten by ELVIS in an exciting 2 minute
gory match. Elvis KICKED him with his blue suede shoes! That was, you know, totally
over and above and beyond and everything.
CHAOS LICH (15-4132) (43-34-0,192) of GRAVEYARD GLORY fought MILA (55-29) (58-
90-0,175) of ROCANIS RIDERS. CHAOS LICH overpowered MILA in an acton packed 1 minute
uneven fight. I couldn't see this much, because it was so chaotic. Chaos is tricky,
you know.
ANTISOCIAL (9-4168) (45-25-1,199) of THE BLUES IX fought KELOS (55-30) (57-86-
3,166) of ROCANIS RIDERS. ANTISOCIAL overcame KELOS in an exciting 2 minute duel.
That was totally ethnic, because Antisocial wasn't just from The Blues, he was
painted blue all over. Different colors of blue, you know, navy blue and powder blue
and all kinds of blues. In swirly patterns which you get dizzy if you look at them
too much.
LADY EMILY (33-6626) (24-14-1,185) of LUROCIANS II fought XERXES (67-2429) (47-
42-2,190) of MISSION IMPLAUSIBLE. LADY EMILY was handily defeated by XERXES in an
exciting 1 minute uneven bout. It was because of the gloves. I mean, Lady Emily
always wears gloves. White ones. Which always get messy if you do xerox things, and
Xerxes is like xerox but more so, and she hates it when her gloves get dirty. You
see?
BANKRUPT (71-3786) (44-27-0,188) of SHADOW GOLD fought RED BARON (33-1092) (33-
31-3,162) of LUROCIANS II. BANKRUPT slimly won victory over RED BARON in an acton
packed 4 minute bout. This is, like, bad investments, right? Better to not invest
anything and just spend it all. I mean, you can't take it with you, so why not have
fun?
SCOURGE (74-2857) (28-22-1,203) of DARK ANGELS fought SAVAGE SAGE (17-4022) (26-
27-0,169) of IMMORTAL ASYLUM. SCOURGE vanquished SAVAGE SAGE in a 2 minute brutal
one-sided fight. Scourging and Savage and Brutal. It was awful.
LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928) (35-28-3,184) of LUROCIANS II fought ELRORAN (12-4386)
(44-34-2,190) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. LORD LIGHTSPEED won victory over ELRORAN in a
popular 1 minute match. Because of light being faster than dark. Everyone knows
that. It's almost as fast as gossip, almost.
RAVEN EYES (12-2709) (70-86-0,196) of SWEET MAGIC fought FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862)
(87-124-1,180) of RHYME TYME. RAVEN EYES was overpowered by FUNNY BUNNY in a popular
1 minute one-sided match. She was laughing too much.
NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821) (27-18-0,220) of BLADES OF WONDER fought HOUSE MOUSE
(55-221) (111-179-2,185) of RHYME TYME. NEBUCHADNEZZAR handily defeated HOUSE MOUSE
in a crowd pleasing 1 minute uneven duel. I didn't know you could bring pestacators
into the arena. Wow. Maybe I should take one on my next date, except what if it
keeps the dates away? Then I'd have to eat figs, and I don't like figs.
WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (52-35-0,242) of DARKMOON fought LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (92-
86-5,188) of ILLFANG PACT. WOUNDWORT lost to LUMP O'GORE in a popular 1 minute
match. This has got to be, you know, kind of embarrassing.
TYVIN (60-5382) (50-41-1,214) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 fought FUT COUGH (17-4815)
(36-14-0,189) of IMMORTAL ASYLUM. TYVIN viciously subdued FUT COUGH in a popular 3
minute gory contest. With a shoe lozenge.
TRYURLUCK (61-1029) (55-48-1,213) of BLOOD KNIGHTS fought NIGHTIE KNIGHT (12-
4731) (47-34-1,183) of LOBOTOMATION. TRYURLUCK was luckily beaten by NIGHTIE KNIGHT
in a crowd pleasing 1 minute fight. I guess it was Nightie's luck today. Sometimes
things are like that.
NEBUCHADNEZZER (15-4097) (46-32-0,227) of GRAVEYARD GLORY fought ROYLAND (56-
3380) (65-46-0,234) of REDHORSE. NEBUCHADNEZZER was overpowered by ROYLAND in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided match. And vicious. Royland hides in barnes and jumps
out at people.
E.A.POLECAT (15-2644) (58-30-4,225) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q fought BEAG MAGDA (12-
4380) (49-30-2,235) of DARKMOON. E.A.POLECAT was overpowered by BEAG MAGDA in a 1
minute mismatched brawl. Too much chile in the sauce, I bet. Did you know that
somebody started chile powder to be like curry? Wierd, isn't it?
BLACK ANDARUS (71-3783) (24-21-1,215) of SHADOW MOD fought HEL (82-14331) (36-
33-0,195) of ARCTIC GUARDS. BLACK ANDARUS savagely defeated HEL in an acton packed 2
minute gruesome struggle. Does that mean this fight was black and white and red all
over? As if!
And the challenge matches:
AGRO (29-4314) (27-35-1,97) of CROC FILES challenged TEXAS GLITTER (35-3509)
(24-11-0,99) of EXACTLY! Up 2. AGRO handily defeated TEXAS GLITTER in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge conflict. Now Agro is all glittery on his scales. Or maybe
scoots. I didn't study this stuff in school, so I just have to wing it.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (30-29-0,103) of CROC FILES challenged VENRIC (60-5709) (28-25-
0,133) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Up 30. GRAHAM was demolished by VENRIC in a 2
minute gory mismatched Challenge match. Do golems wear crocodile boots? Or any kind
of boots?
NOFX (19-3180) (61-33-2,172) of THE MOTHERSHIP II challenged REDFOX (13-4197)
(48-65-0,167) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 5. NOFX devastated REDFOX in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge conflict. This always happens to Redfox. It's like it's his
fate or something. Or maybe he broke a mirror.
OURS ROUGE (3-6049) (23-26-1,157) of THE REDBAERS challenged CRYPT KEEPER (15-
4146) (39-26-1,175) of GRAVEYARD GLORY. Up 18. OURS ROUGE overpowered CRYPT KEEPER
in an exciting 2 minute one-sided Challenge fight. And took away the crypt to
hibernate in. Except it's the wrong time of year to hibernate, isn't it? I mean,
spring.
SHEA MAGEBORN (75-2273) (36-33-1,194) of SHADOWCIRCLE challenged GROGGY DOGGY
(55-223) (120-175-0,197) of RHYME TYME. Up 3. SHEA MAGEBORN narrowly defeated
GROGGY DOGGY in an exciting 5 minute Challenge fight. This is the longest fight, and
probably because the dog was groggy to begin with. That makes for being slow.
TITAN (21-5070) (38-26-1,195) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged SMUG BUG (55-2900)
(40-66-0,190) of RHYME TYME. Down 5. TITAN luckily beat SMUG BUG in an acton packed
1 minute Challenge duel. We all love to see that bug lose. I mean, who likes smug?
Nobody, that's who!
DESECRATION (21-4392) (32-15-2,197) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged MOONJUMPER (16-
3062) (62-94-1,218) of PUNNY AMINALS. Up 21. DESECRATION vanquished MOONJUMPER in
an acton packed 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. If the announcer calls this uneven,
what does he mean? That Desecration is so much better or that Moonjumper had an edge
and should have, you know, won the fight? I mean, I wonder about this sometimes,
especially when I'm riding the Shuttle from arena to arena and it's dark and raining
and there's nobody to talk to except the Unknown Spymaster, and nobody wants to talk
to HIM. As if!
SERAPH (69-5725) (25-9-1,201) of DEATH REALM challenged MADBULL (13-4198) (53-
88-2,194) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 7. SERAPH viciously subdued MADBULL in a popular
2 minute gruesome Challenge competition. Beating Madbull is always, you know,
popular. He makes such funny noises!
DARK OMEGA (21-4983) (46-51-0,213) of LORDS OF SHADOWS challenged DR. SCUM (15-
1968) (58-49-2,206) of DRAKE'S BAR-B-Q. Down 7. DARK OMEGA was defeated by DR. SCUM
in an exciting 1 minute Challenge struggle. Dr. Scum was most challenged, and I
guess he didn't like it. I mean, it makes some people kind of nasty.
PARANOIA (9-4557) (22-6-1,215) of DSM4 challenged FRAIL WHALE (55-1968) (107-
157-3,215) of RHYME TYME. Straight across. PARANOIA overpowered FRAIL WHALE in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge match. It's not hard to beat somebody who's frail,
right? Especially when they think everyone's out to get them and they're, you know,
nervous or something.
And three TV challenges, which congratulations to three TV warriors for having them.
BLACKMYTH (11-4018) (63-39-1,95) of SHADOWS TV challenged OSIRIS (19-4111) (29-
17-2,149) of ANARCHY. Up 54. BLACKMYTH overpowered OSIRIS in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched Challenge duel. How did Blackmyth get all the way down there? I
thought he was higher.
KREWKUT SAUSAGE (65-6327) (17-22-0,266) of LINCOLNSHIRE TV challenged MIMR (82-
3783) (54-38-2,231) of SOL INVICTUS. Down 35. KREWKUT SAUSAGE viciously subdued
MIMR in an acton packed 2 minute Challenge battle. I knew he would be vicious. It's
the krewkut.
And for being Lady Marshall: SETHRA LAVODE (71-4060) (33-5-0,382) of CASTLE
BLACK TV challenged BLADE RUNNER # (33-4544) (92-62-5,268) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY.
Down 114. SETHRA LAVODE bested BLADE RUNNER # in a 1 minute Challenge Title fight.
Congratulations and all that stuff.

THE DEAD W L K TEAM NAME SLAIN BY TURN
PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Black Andarus -- Well, you've fought in a few tourneys, haven't you? Because I
could've beat anybody who actually had just a quarter of me fights. Ah well, at
least I had a bit o' luck with that training regime of mine. Trying to catch a fly
with chopsticks isn't so easy, even in cold weather. But after our fight the
Commission tested me and I caught one. It wasn't the one I was aiming at, but they
seemed impressed enough to give me a new rating. In any case, good luck in your next
tourney and I hope ye get inducted soon. -- Lump o' Gore
Titan -- You're going to need that train if you face me again. I really don't
appreciate getting hit there. -- Mila
House Mouse -- I appreciate your effort to teach me something even though I was
evidently too dense to learn it. Sorry about the elbow hit, I know how those sting.
-- Royland
Ms. Tonte -- No, only that people RAISED in barns tend to be uncouth. They hawk and
spit, they blow their noses without hankies, they fart and then review the odor
("That un's strong enough to fell an ox!"), and of course they invented cow-tipping.
However, people who just happen to be IN barns at the moment are not necessarily rude
or crude at all. Take me for example. I've been in barns. I still drink my tea out
of the cup, not the saucer. You could take me out to dinner and not be embarrassed.
-- Royland
So! You're, like, anti-barn, right?
Wyatt Earp -- If you weren't trying to learn skills you missed a bet, pal. When you
get matched against an old fart like me you can learn a lot. -- Kelos
Doc Holiday -- So, are you freshly come up from Riztab or are you a tourney veteran?
In any case, congratulations on recovering at the hands of Greywand. Some don't, you
know. But they never mention her name if a person dies in the infirmary. -- Loping
Wolf
All -- My apologies for being so quiet! Not that I have much to brag on other than
my DM run. Sethra is on turn 6 of holding the throne and I have now held the throne
18 of the last 20 turns! Not that I expect this to continue once Sethra goes off to
Primus. -- Shadowgate
Tesen -- Don't get a big head from beating me! Shadowgate must be drinking again
running me the way he has the past few turns! -- Blackmyth
Blackmyth -- You're supposed to keep that kind of info within the guild! The guild
is supposed to be like Las Vegas, what happens there stays there! You want to talk
about Yukon's drinking, much more interesting than mine, then go for it! --
Shadowgate
Yukon -- Come on, man! You start doing well here again and then you stop running
most of your warriors here! I need a little alliance support here! -- Shadowgate
Paranoia -- (screaming) You're out to get me! -- Madbull
Paranoia -- You must have a special touch, as he doesn't usually talk that much these
days. -- Redfox
Bankrupt -- I never buy on credit. -- Moonjumper
E.A. Polecat -- You didn't need that train. Good work. -- Raven Eyes
P.S. Dinner sounds good.
Crypt Keeper -- I'll "malevolence" you! -- Sandy of Homicidal Maniacs
Ours Rouge -- Actually, I wasn't "going for the glory of the kill" so much as "going
for the bearskin rug." You know. -- Redfox
Diaretic -- Hang in there, and good luck! -- Bobby Bigfoot
Shea Mageborn -- This time around the fight was not so close. -- Mimr
Nightie Knight -- I was going for the skill learns, (got one) and at least the first
attack. (Nope!) -- Sampsa
Xerxes -- You mustn't forget to dodge; the crowd simply adores the more flashy ones.
-- Woundwort
Hel -- Well fought indeed. I'm sure that the Grand Challenger Champions will be
seeing a lot of you. -- Beag Magda
Hog Reaver -- That just wasn't very nice of you. All of those wins you have and one
little loss. You could have afforded to let me win.

lack of episodes. I've been sick, but expect to be back at the keyboard soon. -- the

MONGO'S MARDI GRAS MADNESS DUELMASTERS AUCTION
Mongo, aka Matt McIntosh and ex-Warden of the Dark Circle, is auctioning off his
entire collection of Duelmasters warriors and stables. Don't miss out on this chance
to own some fantastic warriors! There are ADM warriors available in every class from
Primus to Freshmen, as well as over a dozen Basic stables.
Does a Slasher with +4 attack, +4 decisiveness, +3 initiative and +2 riposte
sound good? How about a Lunger who received the benefit of a TC prize, has TVed
three times after graduating--and still hasn't maxed out his skills!? How about a
Striker in the Freshmen class who has decisiveness for a favorite learn and the MAUL
for a favorite weapon!?
Or perhaps you prefer playing in Basic. Then how does a stable with four Adept
class warriors who have a combined record of 41-19-9 sound? Or maybe a stable with
three 21-Will warriors? Or perhaps a stable with four Initiates and a Rookie who
have a combined record of 23-6-1?
The quality of the lots is excellent. All you need to view and bid on the lots
is go to:
http://members.aol.com/jvmerlino/mardigras.html
If you want to be on the mailing list to receive regular updates on the auction,
just send an e-mail to JVMerlino@aol.com. Merlin, aka John Merlino and also an ex-
Warden of the Dark Circle, will be running this auction for me. I just moved to New
Orleans and am likely currently stumbling around the French Quarter...because it's
Mardi Gras! So I have named my auction in honor of this occasion.
The auction will start on Saturday, March 13th, 2004, and will continue for
several weeks. But you should get your bids in early if you want your best chance at
owning any of these fantastic warriors and stables.
Many thanks to all for your interest and your bids,
Mongo

Style Masters Symposium
Hosted by Hammer
The years have slipped by and many DM Managers have come and gone since the last
Hammer's Handbook was compiled and printed.
There is now a stirring within me to begin writing and editing yet another
Handbook with a distribution date sometime in 2005.
This Handbook will be made available via Email with a possibility of burning the
info to a CD for distribution.
Special arrangements will be made to provide the information via printed page to
those contributors who are serving sentences behind bars.
The working title of this new Handbook is "Style Masters Symposium Hosted by
Hammer".
Distribution of this Handbook is projected to be MAINLY for those DM Managers
who contribute information/articles to Hammer by June 2004.
Informative and entertaining articles should focus on insights regarding Any or
All 10 Style Masters for both the Basic and ADM arenas as well as Tourney
competition.
Articles focusing on Weapons/Armor are also encouraged for inclusion.
Whether you are a Newbie Manager without a clue or a Jaded Veteran; everyone has
discovered something about this gaming experience that is both Insightful and
Entertaining.
Email Your Articles to HammerDM@fastermail.com or send them via Diplo to either
Flower Hammerz (372) in DM 28 or Casino Hammerz (576) in DM 33.
Length and Content of the Style Masters Symposium Hosted by Hammer will be
Determined by the Quality and Quantity of Contributors Combined with the Literary
Efforts of Hammer who is currently overseas for an indefinite period of time.
Articles Contributed for this Project should be of Sufficient Length and Content
to Warrant being Included to Receive the Finished Document when Hammer has completed
this literary work to His satisfaction.
Managers contributing articles are also requested to include a DM Bio of
Themselves along with any Notable Successes and/or Failures during Their DM Career in
Basic, ADM and/or Tourney Play.
A listing of Active Stables would also be Helpful for Anyone Seeking to Reply to
Contributors via Diplo, Email or Snailmail.
May Your Blades Be Sharp And Your Wits Sharper!

St. Valentine's Day Massacre Update
We are pleased to announce that the kLk sponsored St. Valentine's Day Massacre
kill contest in DM 36 is off to a great start. We are also pleased to announce that
in addition to the 10 team rollups we are also able to offer the renaming of a dark
arena warrior as a prize to the manager with the most kills. The contest is only 2
turns old and is still wide open. There are currently 5 managers tied with one kill
each. Anything can still happen so hurry up and get into the arena.
On a personal note, no other alliances have entered the arena in force to
challenge the kLk dominance. We were expecting The Firm to put up a fight for their
supposed home arena. But, they were a no show. Guess they proved what they are
really made of. *evil grin*
Perhaps another alliance would like to step in to give us a challenge. We are
throwing down the gauntlet. Perhaps the Chaos Inc. boys I keep hearing about would
like to step in and challenge the kLk for arena dominance. If you don't show up,
Chaos, don't feel bad. FAR better managers than you have been invited into Jhans but
have chosen to pass on the offer.
So if you consider yourself worthy to compete, like fierce competition, and
enjoy arenas where the personals are as fierce as the fighting, come visit JHANS DM
36. We're already planning our next contest, "Capture the Flag," and have a
storyline being actively worked on in the arena. Whatever you like about DM you can
find it in JHANS.
