Near Barikala:
The heavy bell-tone sounded again, and this time the wave-front came with a
light that was brighter than sunlight and sharper than needles. Artemisia felt that
she was being raked over with a curry-comb. It didn't feel bad, exactly, but if it
had been a little more forceful.... The tentacle holding her did not fare so well:
its flesh was ripped by the comb-teeth of sound and light. A dark fluid that must
have been its blood splattered on the deck.
The tilting deck. There are just so many assaults of sound-light that any
wooden ship could take, and _The Golden Moon_ had taken them.
Artemisia rolled free of the tentacle that had been pinning her down and looked
around, assessing options. The tentacles seemed to be out of the fight, at least for
now. The zombies, too--the bell's attack had shattered their flimsy bodies. The
ship was coming apart around her. But what about her crew? The few men she could
see were dead. They couldn't all have died but her, could they? It certainly looked
like that was what had happened. Maybe it was the Isle spells that had accompanied
her oath to the Greywand that had preserved her.
Which didn't answer the immediate question: What to do? If she stayed with the
ship, no spell of physical toughness would preserve her from the possibility of being
crushed by a falling mast or the like. And if she dived overboard...was the tentacle
thing killed or just injured? But gladiators didn't make it to the Isle through
being indecisive.
She sheathed her cutlass, gathered her limbs under her, and dived, cutting the
water cleanly and stroking away from the ship and toward the dark hump of Barikala
island. They said that no one ever came back from Barikala these days, but she would
deal with that problem later. She could feel turbulence in the water below her and
guessed that it might be more tentacles, and whatever it was they sprouted from.
Well, nothing she could do about it right this minute, but she vowed that if she
survived this, she would encourage the eating of giant octopus. Or squid, as the
case might be.
Her fingers grazed rock and something grasped her wrist. She looked up, gasping
for breath and already twisting to reach her cutlass.
There was a man kneeling on the rock and pulling her upwards. An ordinary man.
The most beautiful sight she'd seen in hours. She allowed him to help her onto the
rock, which she saw was part of the shoreline of the island.
"I'm surprised you survived," the man said. "And glad, of course, we see so few
new faces here! My name's Eddystone, by the way--graduated from the arena here and
didn't get off-island fast enough."
Artemisia gave up trying to wring water out of her hair and clothes. "I'm a
Lady Protector myself," she admitted. "What's going on here? The zombies, the
tentacles, the bell...?"
"Ah, well, it's a longish story," Eddystone muttered. He squinted out across
the water. "But I guess you're the only survivor on my section of the coast, so we
might as well head back to the Hall."
"And you can tell me this long story on the way," Artemisia suggested firmly.
"Start with the short version, and we can go into detail later."
"Yes, well...hmm. I guess it began with the Invasion, or around the same time--
I don't know if they were connected. But the Duke says that's when the Light-Keepers
started having trouble with-- Er, you HAVE heard of the TRUE Barikala Light, haven't
you?"
Artemisia glanced inland toward the pillar of light that was visible over the
island every night and on cloudy days. "Even if I hadn't heard of it then, I have
since."
"Well, the Light-Keepers started having trouble with the, uh, controls on it, I
guess you'd say. Most of us didn't know a thing about it then, of course, but we've
all--everyone on Barikala--become, uh, well-informed, I guess you could say, since
then. The Light got loose. At least to the extent you see now. Don't even ask what
happened to the Keepers on duty when that happened! The Light isn't, well, Evil or
anything like that, but when it's loose, it strains things. The fabric of the
Multiverse and so on. Like having a lot of little temporary Gates around the place.
Well, the Duke's no fool, you know. There were procedures. Close off the island to
local traffic. The power of the Light can be tapped, and it was used to set up a
Barrier. Things can get in, but not out. Because all these little Gates were
leaking...monsters. Like the one you fought, we've had several of that type. They
come from a place called, uh, Miskatonia or something like that. Not always inside
the Barrier, but since the monsters are all drawn to the power of the Light, they all
come in, sooner or later. And we kill them as fast as we can." Eddystone grimaced.
"It isn't easy! We kill monsters, but there are always more coming, and OUR
population is dropping, because since the Barrier went up and people realized that no
one was LEAVING Barikala, we haven't gotten people to replace the ones that die."
"Sounds like what you need to do is close the Gates," Artemisia said.
"That's easy to SAY," Eddystone agreed, "and we do when we can, although we're
running out of magicians. But for every Gate we close, it seems like two more open.
It's the Light that makes all these Gates POSSIBLE, so what we NEED to do is get the
Light back under control. And that isn't something anyone seems to know how to do."
"Then we'd better find out," Artemisia said.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hail, Free Blades!
I figured that I ought to write a little something since so many of you like
such things. Let's see. There's Rillion(tm), Jorja, my own manager Bobby Bigfoot,
and the editor too. O.K. there's not a lot of people who like such things, but I
have a lot of respect and appreciation for those who do, so here goes.
I am the very first of Bobby Bigfoot's fighters to become a Lord Marshall of any
advanced arena. I didn't think that I would be ready for a shot at it until after
the next split when even more fighters would be skimmed off the top. However, I saw
my chance and I took it. With my T.V. Challenge (actually, I got back to back T.V.'s
in the last two Spring mailers, both in ADM class) I just might be able to hang onto
the title for a cycle or two. We shall see. I hope that you all come out to see the
dashing young Shagornan defend his position with that wicked pointy thing!

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Alarond the scribe says that the bars here use trolls in their stew, which is
NOT TRUE. Because they don't serve stew, you know? Just sandwitches. And you can't
make a sandwitch with a troll, which I know because I saw somebody try once, with a
slice off of, you know, an arm, and the sandwitch kept growing fingers even when he
kept biting them off, and besides, it tastes terrible. At least, that's what he
said. And it would be worse than eating watermelon seeds that would sprout in your
stomach, because at least they don't sprout FINGERS. I wouldn't want fingers growing
in MY stomach. As if! Besides further, there aren't any trolls on the Isle, which I
know because I was looking for one just yesterday because of wanting to talk to him
about a bridge. So remember, if anyone tells you about trolls in the stew, DON'T
LISTEN. It's, you know, totally spurious.
It says here that Blackest Pride is standing tall, which is good, because
slumping is, you know, bad. It's untidy, and it doesn't leave room for lunch.
Darkmoon is avoiding them. I don't know why, because of them being so fine and
upstanding tall and all. I guess it's just one of those things.
Sue from Women of Reality got the most challenges, but she says it wasn't as bad
as TOGS, so it's okay. But don't do it again.
Some numbers for people to crunch, because crunchy is more fun than smooth.
Thirty-three fights. Fifteen challenge matches. No standbys! Two people actually
died, but they came back to life before their apartment leases were cancelled, so it
doesn't count. Lots of people tied for longest fight at five minutes, which I don't
think is long enough to call, you know, really long.
About the fights:
SHEYN (64-4157) (22-0-1,88) of HEART OF DARKNESS fought DOC HOLIDAY (12-2956)
(17-16-1,70) of THE LAWMEN. SHEYN was subdued by DOC HOLIDAY in a crowd pleasing 1
minute match. I was, you know, surprised. I thought Doc Holiday was more of a fun
kind of guy. Like Mr. May at the beach or something.
BEER (71-3539) (24-34-0,70) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought LOPING WOLF (56-1796) (59-
106-0,85) of REDHORSE. BEER won victory over LOPING WOLF in a crowd pleasing 1
minute fight. This was one of those, what do they call it, four-dinged? It was a
four-dinged fight. Beer defeats almost everybody. Especially Rirorni, because of
them only being used to icky mare's milk.
SANDY (22-5829) (27-17-1,99) of WOMEN OF REALITY fought SPINAL CRACKER (36-5007)
(15-17-0,55) of HELTER SKELTER. SANDY handily defeated SPINAL CRACKER in a 1 minute
mismatched match. Well, you know, of course! I mean, not just the fights and the
points making it totally not matched, but it's right before a tourney, and Sandy is
ALWAYS ready to beat people up right before a tourney. It's a law of nature.
WRATH OF ONE (82-11628) (12-3-0,91) of LUROCIANS XII fought LOKI (71-3798) (17-
15-1,91) of ARCTIC GUARDS. WRATH OF ONE executed LOKI in a 1 minute one-sided bout.
Gosh! I mean, you know, okay, Loki was asleep on guard, but it was only for a
minute. And he was at least THERE, you know. Some people don't even show up.
Especially in the arctic. Well, except maybe when it's this hot and the arctic is
really nice and cool. But still.
LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (30-31-0,102) of LUROCIANS II fought CRACKPIPE (69-
8196) (24-10-3,95) of MARY HAD A LITTLE.... LORD FIREFLASH was narrowly defeated by
CRACKPIPE in a popular 5 minute gory match. This is one of the tied-for-longest
fights, but they don't get turtles. Turtles don't like gory. And somebody should go
TALK to Mary. About, you know, stuff. And things.
RED BARON (33-1092) (33-33-3,167) of LUROCIANS II fought HERMES (58-6016) (20-
10-0,141) of MYTHICAL. RED BARON lost to HERMES in a 2 minute gory fray. And his
manager was SOOO mad that Red had to wash pizza pans for a whole WEEK. Which is
awful, I mean, burned on cheese. That's totally hard to clean off.
RILLION [tW] (36-5545) (38-26-1,164) of THE CHADS fought SUNGOD DESIGNED ME (43-
4270) (23-5-0,102) of WENSINWASIN. RILLION [tW] was viciously subdued by SUNGOD
DESIGNED ME in a popular 2 minute gory bout. It was a.... What's this word supposed
to be? I never heard of that word. No, I won't go look it up in the dictionary.
Why should I? I think you made it up. I'll say it MY way. It was a poetic match,
because of Mr. Me punching holes in Rillion tW, and the pieces that came out of the
holes being all over so that people were tripping on them, and it was even worse than
gore.
SMUG BUG (55-2900) (41-73-0,179) of RHYME TYME fought LORD REDMOND (12-4109)
(33-22-1,150) of LUROCIANS IV. SMUG BUG was unbelievably bested by LORD REDMOND in a
crowd pleasing 2 minute bout. Darn. This means that the stupid Bug will go around
being smug for TWO MORE WEEKS, just because of beating somebody who only had about
half as many fights, which isn't something to boast about in MY book. As if!
PAPPI DEWRAG (66-3565) (30-7-0,187) of HELTER SKELTER fought HOUSE MOUSE (55-
221) (115-183-2,185) of RHYME TYME. PAPPI DEWRAG was savagely defeated by HOUSE
MOUSE in an action packed 4 minute duel. I warned people, I told them, "Don't feed
that cute little mouse troll stew, or next thing you know, it'll be all mean and go
biting people," and have you ever looked at a mouse's teeth? They're really big and
sharp. And savage.
LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928) (36-29-3,193) of LUROCIANS II fought HEL (82-14331)
(39-38-0,196) of ARCTIC GUARDS. LORD LIGHTSPEED overpowered HEL in an action packed
1 minute one-sided bout. That's why it was, you know, action packed, because of
everything happening so fast. We had to have instant replay to see who won!
JOPPA CLUBFIST (12-3748) (24-20-0,210) of HALL OF GIANT fought ELVIS (7-612)
(35-29-0,172) of THE ROCKERS. JOPPA CLUBFIST was beaten by ELVIS in an action packed
5 minute fight. This was another one tied for longest. Why couldn't somebody have
gone another minute? This is confusing. Anyway, Elvis kicked Joppa and now he's
nothing but a hound dog crying all the time. It's very sad. Someone offered him a
bone in the infirmary and he wouldn't take it.
SAMPSA (31-4233) (26-18-2,186) of SOL INVICTUS fought MILA (55-29) (61-95-0,179)
of ROCANIS RIDERS. SAMPSA was defeated by MILA in an action packed 2 minute fight.
But the announcer didn't say it was mis-matched, which is, you know, something. Not
a lot, but still, because of the different numbers, it's something.
MOONJUMPER (16-3062) (66-98-1,196) of PUNNY AMINALS fought TRYURLUCK (61-1029)
(57-54-1,183) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. MOONJUMPER was narrowly defeated by TRYURLUCK in a 2
minute match. How narrow is a narrow defeet? Quad A? I mean, you keep hearing
about them, but have you ever tried to find SHEWS for de feet when they're narrow?
It's totally wide shews all the way.
ELRORAN (12-4386) (50-36-2,254) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought JULIUS (64-3641)
(73-87-2,188) of UNDER DURESS. ELRORAN slimly won victory over JULIUS in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute fray. It wasn't REALLY a slim victory, it just looked that way
because of Elroran wearing a girdle. And you thought it was Julius that was under
duressed. As if!
TITAN (21-5070) (45-27-1,222) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought LADY EMILY (33-6626) (25-
15-1,185) of LUROCIANS II. TITAN was demolished by LADY EMILY in a 1 minute uneven
bout. Gosh! That doesn't sound, you know, lady-like. I mean, sure, a lady would do
anything the RIGHT way, but, like, demolishing just isn't a lady sort of thing.
DESECRATION (21-4392) (37-16-3,296) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought MADBULL (13-4198)
(55-94-2,186) of CARDOW HUNTERS. DESECRATION devastated MADBULL in a popular 1
minute gruesome one-sided contest. Not to make it sound like it wasn't good work,
but, you know, EVERYBODY devastates Madbull. This is, like, why he's always mad.
LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (97-89-5,211) of ILLFANG PACT fought FRAIL WHALE (55-1968)
(111-161-3,197) of RHYME TYME. LUMP O'GORE was narrowly defeated by FRAIL WHALE in a
popular 5 minute bloody match. And ANOTHER one tied for longest. That's THREE.
It's too much. Or else not enough.
DUBIJN (64-4092) (39-10-0,233) of HEART OF DARKNESS fought SAMOO (37-4630) (27-
15-1,201) of DARKENED PRIDE. DUBIJN was devastated by SAMOO in an exciting 1 minute
brutal one-sided fight. This is what happens to people with funny names, Dubijn.
People come along and devastate before the arenamaster even figures out how to SAY
your name.
Oh, and now the challenges matches. That's good, that means half done already.
Which is like, glass half full, you know? Because it's always better not to get
gloomy, or it makes wrinkles, and it's really hard to get a good tan inside a
wrinkle.
ROWARDENN (16-4105) (17-11-0,60) of SAILS OF CHARON challenged FLESH RIPPER (74-
3375) (12-3-1,96) of LUROCIANS XI. Up 36, and, because the Saint said I should
mention it to see if anybody cared, down 13 fights. I think. I didn't, you know,
study math when I was a kid. ROWARDENN beat FLESH RIPPER in a crowd pleasing 4
minute Challenge brawl. We kind of expected this, right?
LOONY LATEKNIGHT (28-3529) (25-8-2,100) of IDIOTIC ICCERS challenged SUPERIOR
FORCES (33-4543) (63-99-2,133) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Up 33 points and, um, more
than a hundred fights but don't make me count them, okay? Um, you should know that
I'm not having an OPINION here about fights and recognition, I'm just saying the
numbers. That's all. LOONY LATEKNIGHT was devastated by SUPERIOR FORCES in a 1
minute Challenge duel. Actually, it must have been Loony's manager who is, you know,
idiotic.
THE SICKNESS (21-5327) (20-8-1,94) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged SANDY (1-6821)
(23-47-1,67) of HOMICIDAL MANIACS. Down 27 or so, and up 42 fights. Not counting
tourney fights at, you know, ANY time, because I don't know how many anybody has if
they have any at all. THE SICKNESS overpowered SANDY in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge duel. It's the berserk thing. I was talking to Olaf Modeen just, you
know, last week or maybe it was this week, he always looks the same, and he said
being berserk in the arena is mostly not good, because of doing stupid things. And I
said being in the arena is a stupid thing to begin with, and he said, well, you don't
need to know what he said.
BINDI (29-4454) (18-6-2,100) of CROC FILES challenged REDFOX (13-4197) (50-71-
0,127) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 27 and maybe 95 or so. This is the "teach me skills"
thing, isn't it? BINDI was devastated by REDFOX in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
mismatched Challenge bout.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (31-36-0,117) of CROC FILES challenged BLUE (33-5776) (25-16-
1,125) of BLADES OF GRASS. Up a little, um, about 8, and down 26, I think. I don't
think I'll mention the fights next time, unless you want me to, because of the extra
math. GRAHAM was handily defeated by BLUE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest.
I like bluegrass. Music.
OURS ROUGE (3-6049) (24-33-1,149) of THE REDBAERS challenged VENRIC (60-5709)
(33-28-0,179) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. Up 30 and 4. OURS ROUGE assassinated VENRIC
in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Gosh! That's one mad bear!
His face is red. After he tried to eat Venric, you know, and found out about Venric
being a golem. I didn't know bears turned red in the face when they got mad. Do
they go berserk, too?
TESEN (12-4211) (42-51-1,133) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS challenged IDIOTIC INDIGO
(28-3528) (26-7-0,134) of IDIOTIC ICCERS. Up 1 and down 60. TESEN overpowered
IDIOTIC INDIGO in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Does it count if he's an
idiot? I mean, some people, not me!, say that if you're an idiot, nothing counts.
GOLDIE (29-4395) (22-17-1,132) of CROC FILES challenged ROYLAND (56-3380) (69-
50-0,173) of REDHORSE. Up 41 and 80. GOLDIE was vanquished by ROYLAND in a popular
1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. See? I told you Royland was Not Nice. He's
always been like that.
SCRAPPA (29-4411) (19-13-2,107) of CROC FILES challenged GROGGY DOGGY (55-223)
(123-180-0,173) of RHYME TYME. Up 66 and lots and lots, more than 200. This is
totally albendranious. SCRAPPA was vanquished by GROGGY DOGGY in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. I mean, this dog didn't even wake up to beat Scrappa.
AGRO (29-4314) (31-39-1,153) of CROC FILES challenged KELOS (55-30) (61-90-
3,161) of ROCANIS RIDERS. Up 8 and 81. It sounds different with the fights in it,
doesn't it? AGRO was overpowered by KELOS in an action packed 1 minute uneven
Challenge melee. I think every Croc lost today, and what I want to know is, did the
man who was taking orders for crocodile boots have anything to do with this?
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (39-25-0,203) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN challenged FUNNY BUNNY
(55-1862) (92-127-1,204) of RHYME TYME. Up 1 and lots, more than a hundred, and I'm
not going to do the math. My head aches. SEVERUS SNAPE overpowered FUNNY BUNNY in a
2 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Bunny slippers? That's, I don't know,
totally tubular. I mean, I just can't see Mr. Snape with bunny slippers.
TYVIN (60-5382) (54-45-1,196) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2 challenged SMALL ROOMS
(97-606) (18-9-4,201) of THE HASTINGS. Up 5 and down 72. You know how it is with
the Bloodgames warriors, they come in here swanking--I never knew what swanking was
till I saw them--and they just don't have lots of experience like everyone else.
TYVIN was savagely defeated by SMALL ROOMS in a 3 minute Challenge competition. But
they're really mean.
THE MADNESS (21-5214) (33-13-1,190) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged SUE (22-5828)
(26-23-1,191) of WOMEN OF REALITY. Up 1 and up 3. Close, you know? THE MADNESS
devastated SUE in a popular 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. *I* think it was
the threat of another TOGS that did her in. That's what *I* think.
MIMR (82-3783) (59-41-2,248) of SOL INVICTUS challenged RAVEN EYES (12-2709)
(75-89-0,237) of SWEET MAGIC. Down 11 and up 64. Didn't they just do this? Or was
it somebody else? I mean, I see so many fights, or at least so many notes about
fights, sometimes I get confused. MIMR demolished RAVEN EYES in a popular 1 minute
gruesome one-sided Challenge melee.
And for being Lord Marshall, our Duel-Too column-writing WOUNDWORT (12-4228)
(58-37-0,247) of DARKMOON TV challenged WYATT EARP (12-2168) (29-11-1,213) of THE
LAWMEN. For the title, nothing counts except winning. That's what it says here in
my notes. I don't know who said it. And a TV challenge, too! The rest were just
radio. WOUNDWORT viciously subdued WYATT EARP in a 2 minute Challenge Title fight.
Congratulations and all that good stuff, and thank you for writing a column this time
and next time.

Death Fest Begins July 29/DM 59 T-172
"You drive a hard bargain Hammer," responded Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul, "but the
Gladiatorial Commission has agreed to re-open DM 58 Delarq Tor as a Slow Arena
exclusively for a period of six months to those Death Fest contestants who fight
their stables at least 67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death
Fest; on the condition that at least 20 stables qualify for the Illis Iron Stable
Award at the conclusion of the Death Fest and those qualifying managers send a New
Stable to DM 58 Delarq Tor without Cannibalizing their participation in the other
arenas where they have active stables!"
Hammer felt a certain sense of satisfaction as he studied the ghoulish grin
spreading across the face of Lord Lian Ki Na-Sul; proud Arena Master of the once
dying Illis Arena, as the DM 59 Arena Authority signed the Gladiatorial Commission
papers authenticating the arrangement agreed upon by the two parties presiding.
"You and the Gladiatorial Commission also drive a hard bargain," Hammer replied
as he reflected upon the prospects of Delarq Tor DM 58 being re-opened as a Slow
Arena with at least 20 New Stables by the Managers who fight their stables at least
67 times out of a possible 75 during the 15 rounds of Death Fest. "I also notice the
clause that for Delarq Tor to be open Exclusively for 6 months to the New Stables
managed by the Illis Iron Stable Award Winners that there must be at least 15 stables
Active each cycle. That is a fair bargain for the opportunity to battle for the
Duelmaster Throne each of those six months before Other New Stables are allowed to
enter Delarq Tor."
This was a Golden Opportunity for both Veteran and Newbie Managers to pave a new
frontier of Delarq history by qualifying their Death Fest stables in DM 59 with 67
fights out of a possible 75; then for the price of running a stable in a Regular
Arena, continuing to be Active in DM 59 and sending a New Team Roll Up to be a part
of "History in the Making" when Delarq Tor would re-open for its First Turn as a Slow
Arena on November 3rd, 2005.
Death Fest would conclude on T-186 August 25th, 2005 allowing the Illis Iron
Stable Award Winners enough time to be registered with the Gladiatorial Commission;
whereupon they would be able to submit a New Team Roll Up to the GC to start a New
Stable in Delarq Tor; be able to fight those New Gladiators in the Rookies 2005 Fall
Mailer Tourney; then begin competing for the DM 58 Duelmasters Throne in Delarq Tor
right out of the gate with the November 3rd 2005 T-1 Debut Opening Round.
Hammer of the First Part had also negotiated with Lord Na-Zul of the Second Part
an agreement that All 10 Dark Arena Monsters and 17 NPCs Characters be re-named by
the Top Ten Death Fest Finishers. [See DM 59 T-171 Newsletter Team Spotlight by
Hammer for the complete listing of Dark Arena Monsters/NPCs and the Official Death
Fest Designation for which Top Ten Finishers re-name which characters!]
Lord Na-Sul could not hide his delight at the prospects of Death being re-
delivered to his once dying arena during the Delarq Death Fest; the DM 59 Arena
Master agreed that these Death Fest Prizes were but a Small Exchange in Comparison to
the Profits to be made by the local Illis business merchants and surrounding
community from the Anticipated Influx into Illis by the Veteran and Newbie
Managers/Gladiators/Stables seeking to make History in the Delarq Death Fest.
Nor could Hammer conceal his jubilation regarding the Call Across Alistari being
Answered to Cross Blades and Match Wits with the Devious, the Diabolical, the
Dangerous and the Down Challenging who were being drawn to the Delarq Death Fest to
Fulfill their Delarq Dueling Destiny!
