The Isle of the Eye:
Beag Magda sat at a small table near the back of the Two Lilies and swirled the
last of the tea in her cup moodily. She had no fault to find with the Lilies, they
knew her here and always gave her the same table. And the tea, as usual, was
excellent. Something was wrong somewhere, but it was less definite--and more
important--than a problem with the service, or a mediocre cup of tea. She was almost
afraid to look into her cup.
That was nonsense. It was only the unknown that should be feared, and once she
read the tea leaves, the problem would not be unknown. Well, it would not be
completely unknown, but tea leaves were a very imprecise method of diagnosis and
prognostication. With a little shake, she threw off the dark mood, emptied the last
swallow of tea into the saucer, and peered into the cup at the leaves clinging to its
bottom and sides.
She could feel the hair trying to rise on the back of her neck. The leaves
seemed to be swimming in a web of shadows. The patterns they formed all indicated as
plainly as tea leaves could that something very dark was impending. But nothing was
clear. Who was menaced, and by what? How soon?
Beag Magda set the cup down very carefully, because her hand was trying to
shake, and laid coins beside it to pay for the tea. She needed more information, and
she couldn't get it here.
The Darkmoon guildhouse was empty when she got there, everyone out on their own
business. Just as well, she didn't feel like trying to explain this formless dread.
She climbed the stairs to the second floor, meaning to go to her room in the tower
above. But as she walked down the hallway, she was stopped by a call for help.
For a moment Beag Magda didn't move, hoping for more information. It had been
Artemisia--she was passing the door to her friend's room at that moment, which might
have helped focus the call--but all she knew for certain was that Artemisia had some
problem and needed her assistance. But where? And to do what?
No answer was forthcoming.
Beag Magda nodded once and continued on up to her own room. It was a pleasant
room, warm and well-lit even with the fog pressing against the windows from the
outside, but today it felt cold. Unsheltering. Probably just her imagination,
stirred by the message in the tea leaves. The only problem was, what if it wasn't
her imagination? Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference between imagination
and a genuine psychic sense of foreboding. Well, that was neither here nor there.
Her problem was to learn more, so that she could give Artemisia the aid that was
needed.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hello again Free Blades!
Where has everyone gone? Is it just a post face to face thing, or is it
something to worry about? I hope not. Well it makes me the King of a very small
mountain. Is that better than not being king at all? You tell me.
I T.V. challenged Elroran this last time, another former arenamate of mine. My
manager wasn't sure about Elroran's FE, but he guessed that it was more than mine.
Obviously I came out on top. Elroran, maximum respect to you and Rillion, your
manager. If you are remaining active and I remain on top, I'll probably give you
another shot, so maybe you can adjust your strategy and take me down. We'll see.
Jorja, only you and my manager seem to have posted any personals this time, so
as always, our hats are off to you, fair lady.
It's time for me to go now. The ladies really line up to meet a defending Lord
Marshall and I see some interesting new faces tonight.
Fight on, Free Blades, and tell your friends to join us here.
Woundwort
Lord Marshall
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Lightning and thunder and rain. I tried to explain how we had that last time
and didn't need it again, but it still went right on doing it. Oh, well. Did you
know that you can grow mushrooms in the bathroom in this weather? On the towels.
And under the tub. Much better to go to the beach, there aren't any mushrooms there.
Lurocians II were avoided by Blackest Pride. It SAYS here in the notes that
this is because the Lurocians don't brush their teeth, but how did, um, whoever it
was, the Unknown Spymaster, how did he know? I mean, that's between them and their
dentist, isn't it?
Mila got the most challenges and decided to open a presidential fast food joint.
I like my food slow, really. I mean, who wants to chase fast food? Especially when
you're hungry.
Thirty-three fights, twelve challenges, three of them teevee, one standby, no
deaths. The longest fight was six minutes, if you call that long. Sometimes it is,
and sometimes it isn't.
So here they are. The fights.
BEER (71-3539) (25-35-0,76) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought LULU (32-3523) (24-29-
1,64) of FISHERMAN'S WHARF. BEER devastated LULU in a 1 minute one-sided battle.
Well, now she knows. About Beer in the kitchen, you know. Cook with it, don't drink
it, but why cook with it anyway? There's other things.
FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (12-5-1,71) of LUROCIANS XI fought WHITEWING (13-4346)
(20-36-0,49) of CARDOW HUNTERS. FLESH RIPPER was devastated by WHITEWING in a 1
minute one-sided duel. I guess Whitewing didn't want his flesh ripped, as who would,
you know? It isn't something people like. Unless maybe they're a Croc and doing it
to somebody else, which is not nice.
PLACES THE LOTION... (98-909) (7-3-5,29) of ARCANE BEACH DAY fought U.S. STEEL
(49-3369) (18-20-0,73) of THE BONDS. PLACES THE LOTION... was overpowered by U.S.
STEEL in a 1 minute one-sided fray. Well, you know, it was only SPF 10. That isn't
enough. Places had better get to work and train that SPF, because ten is piffling.
It says so right here in the notes. Really. Well, the ten, not the piffling.
LOKI (71-3798) (18-16-1,97) of ARCTIC GUARDS fought DOC HOLIDAY (12-2956) (18-
17-1,91) of THE LAWMEN. LOKI was beaten by DOC HOLIDAY in a 2 minute bout. This is
what happens when you break the law, Loki, the dentist comes and pulls out all your
teeth, and then you have to mend what your broke anyway. It isn't worth it.
TIGRESS (13-4471) (30-27-0,116) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought VENRIC (60-5709) (33-
30-0,149) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. TIGRESS was demolished by VENRIC in a 2 minute
one-sided fight. Someone told me that tigresses always fight fiercely to defend
their cups, but this one must not have had cups. Or kittens, or whatever.
KELOS (55-30) (62-91-3,147) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought XHUGHA KARGARIT (103-38)
(32-28-1,130) of Old Barflies Association. KELOS was overcome by XHUGHA KARGARIT in
an exciting 2 minute fight. And then everyone in the stands laughed at Kelos, who
didn't notice anyway because of having SUCH a headache.
RILLION (36-5545) (39-27-1,142) of THE CHADS fought SCRAPPA (29-4411) (19-15-
2,112) of CROC FILES. RILLION overpowered SCRAPPA in a 1 minute uneven fight. And
Rillion (tW) punched, like, totally holes in the Croc and had them made into buttons.
I don't know why, he doesn't wear things that button. And buttons always come off at
the worst moment and get lost and if they're fancy buttons you can never find them
and have to get all new because otherwise nothing matches.
OSIRIS (19-4111) (31-20-2,171) of ANARCHY fought LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (31-
32-0,102) of LUROCIANS II. OSIRIS overpowered LORD FIREFLASH in an exciting 1 minute
uneven competition. I didn't know Osiris did anarchy. I thought he was a star. In,
um, Canis Medium?
SMUG BUG (55-2900) (41-75-0,170) of RHYME TYME fought HYSTERIAS (19-4047) (30-
32-3,161) of ANARCHY. SMUG BUG was vanquished by HYSTERIAS in an action packed 1
minute one-sided fray. Oh, good. Smug should always be stepped on because of being
so annoying. Bugs, too.
ROYLAND (56-3380) (71-50-0,179) of REDHORSE fought SAMPSA (31-4233) (27-19-
2,180) of SOL INVICTUS. ROYLAND won victory over SAMPSA in a 2 minute bout. You
weren't supposed to lose that, Sampsa. It'll give Royland ideas, and he doesn't need
ideas. He already has some.
KREWKUT SAUSAGE (65-6327) (22-24-0,190) of LINCOLNSHIRE fought JULIUS (64-3641)
(74-88-2,195) of UNDER DURESS. KREWKUT SAUSAGE overpowered JULIUS in a popular 1
minute brutal one-sided duel. Good work, Krewkut. Duress that Julius some more. He
never talks. Well, you don't either, that I can remember, but it's the principle of
the thing.
LADY EMILY (33-6626) (26-16-1,198) of LUROCIANS II fought FUT COUGH (17-4815)
(39-16-0,177) of IMMORTAL ASYLUM. LADY EMILY was overpowered by FUT COUGH in a 1
minute one-sided duel. That's because she's too polite to ask what it all MEANS, but
I can ask. It isn't impolite if I do it, because I'm the spy reporter. How can your
feet cough? Do you need to wash your socks oftener?
NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821) (29-23-0,192) of BLADES OF WONDER fought LORD REDMOND
(12-4109) (34-23-1,167) of LUROCIANS IV. NEBUCHADNEZZAR devastated LORD REDMOND in a
popular 1 minute one-sided bout. I think it was because someone asked Lord to spell
Neb's name. That would devastate anybody. There's too much of it, with lots of
letters. Zees, even.
WYATT EARP (12-2168) (30-12-1,203) of THE LAWMEN fought SAVAGE SAGE (17-4022)
(28-30-0,186) of IMMORTAL ASYLUM. WYATT EARP was overcome by SAVAGE SAGE in an
action packed 2 minute duel. Gosh, does this mean Savage was a train robber or
something? Or a rustler? Never rustle, just crackle briskly. Much better.
ELRORAN (12-4386) (51-37-2,196) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought SUPERIOR FORCES
(33-4543) (65-99-2,167) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. ELRORAN overpowered SUPERIOR FORCES
in a popular 1 minute one-sided duel. So, what is superior to superior? Extra-
superior? Eloran is an extra-superior force?
PARANOIA (9-4557) (28-7-1,235) of DSM4 fought FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (92-129-
1,191) of RHYME TYME. PARANOIA overpowered FUNNY BUNNY in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
mismatched conflict. And after the fight, Funny kept looking over his shoulder, and
whirling around to see if somebody was creeping up on him, and when he went to the
Wolf's Head he looked under the table, too, because he was SURE somebody was out to
GET him. Too bad they didn't.
HOUSE MOUSE (55-221) (117-183-2,217) of RHYME TYME fought HEL (82-14331) (40-39-
0,200) of ARCTIC GUARDS. HOUSE MOUSE narrowly defeated HEL in an exciting 3 minute
brutal bout. Narrow is, like, just a crack, right? So if we put Duck Tape over the
crack, it won't happen again?
ELVIS (7-612) (37-29-0,212) of THE ROCKERS fought FRAIL WHALE (55-1968) (112-
162-3,200) of RHYME TYME. ELVIS devastated FRAIL WHALE in a popular 5 minute brutal
mismatched brawl. Of course. Anybody would be, you know, devastated to come out and
see a hound dog in blue suede shoes. But you have to be careful, because blood on a
blue suede shoe may stain, and you can't soak it in cold water or it goes all icky.
DESECRATION (21-4392) (38-16-3,303) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought PANIC ATTACK (9-
3624) (32-22-1,201) of DSM4. DESECRATION devastated PANIC ATTACK in an exciting 1
minute uneven duel. So does this mean that Desecration (I call him Dessy when we're
at the Wolf's Head) doesn't panic? I suppose it's because of his pride.
LIMA BEAN FLAMBE (70-3118) (37-26-0,211) of HEAVE HO! fought TYVIN (60-5382)
(54-47-1,195) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS 2. LIMA BEAN FLAMBE was handily defeated by
TYVIN in a 1 minute one-sided conflict. Oh, good. I just can't ever seem to have
good feelings about lima beans. It's just, you know, one of those things.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (40-25-0,216) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN fought THE MADNESS (21-
5214) (34-13-1,204) of BLACKEST PRIDE. SEVERUS SNAPE subdued THE MADNESS in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute gory match. What I want to know is, if the Madness is subdued,
does that make it sane? Or just only a little madness? Sort of half-mad?
The challenges, which are mostly radio:
COOKIE (29-4455) (16-10-2,60) of CROC FILES challenged LOPING WOLF (56-1796)
(60-107-0,78) of REDHORSE. Up 18. COOKIE was devastated by LOPING WOLF in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge conflict. Well, you see, it's what wolves do. They eat
cookies. And little girls. Because of pretending to be grandmas and having big
teeth.
LOONY LATEKNIGHT (28-3529) (25-9-2,98) of IDIOTIC ICCERS challenged REDFOX (13-
4197) (52-71-0,144) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 46. LOONY LATEKNIGHT subdued REDFOX in a
2 minute Challenge match. Well, gosh, sometimes you just HAVE to be up late at
night. And of COURSE you're subdued the next day. Whatever else? It just happens.
BINDI (29-4454) (18-8-2,97) of CROC FILES challenged WRATH OF ONE (82-11628)
(14-3-1,130) of LUROCIANS XII. Up 33. BINDI was handily defeated by WRATH OF ONE in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. Imagine if there'd been two! Croc boots.
IDIOTIC INDIGO (28-3528) (26-8-0,123) of IDIOTIC ICCERS challenged RED BARON
(33-1092) (33-35-3,153) of LUROCIANS II. Up 30. IDIOTIC INDIGO unbelievably bested
RED BARON in a popular 6 minute Challenge fight. Well, the bookies said this was
really idiotic, but you know an iccer can eat lots of pizza. But I'd like to see
somebody ELSE open a pizza place here on the Isle. Competition. Price wars. Extra
sausage.
GOLDIE (29-4395) (22-19-1,139) of CROC FILES challenged TRYURLUCK (61-1029) (58-
55-1,179) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. Up 40. GOLDIE was vanquished by TRYURLUCK in a 1 minute
uneven Challenge fight. Well, the Crocs and the Iccers might not TALK, but at least
their manager is paying SOME attention. They might be huge challenges, well, okay,
they ARE huge challenges, but at least, you know, they get to pick their fights.
AGRO (29-4314) (31-41-1,138) of CROC FILES challenged TESEN (12-4211) (44-51-
1,163) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. Up some. Um, 25? Something like that. AGRO was
vanquished by TESEN in a 2 minute uneven Challenge duel. Never bite a demon, Agro,
because they have icky blood.
GRAHAM (29-4318) (31-38-0,108) of CROC FILES challenged BLUE (33-5776) (27-16-
1,136) of BLADES OF GRASS. Up 24. GRAHAM slimly won victory over BLUE in a popular
3 minute Challenge competition. I didn't know people were let come out on the sands
with grass swords. That's weird. And people call ME, you know, a dumb blonde (yes,
they DO, I've heard them), but I wouldn't do that.
OURS ROUGE (3-6049) (25-34-2,180) of THE REDBAERS challenged GROGGY DOGGY (55-
223) (125-180-0,183) of RHYME TYME. Up 3. OURS ROUGE was overpowered by GROGGY
DOGGY in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. I guess Groggy must be a bear dog.
But he had armor, so he wasn't completely bare. Could you bear it if I went on with
these, you know, puns? Because I've barely started. There are more. Oh, well, I
guess the printer wants this right away, so maybe some other time.
SUE (22-5828) (26-25-1,182) of WOMEN OF REALITY challenged LUMP O'GORE (13-1212)
(98-90-5,198) of ILLFANG PACT. Up 16. SUE was devastated by LUMP O'GORE in a 1
minute uneven Challenge brawl. Blood is one thing, because you CAN wash it out, but
LUMPS of gore just don't ever go away. You have to throw the clothes away instead.
HERMES (58-6016) (21-10-0,160) of MYTHICAL TV challenged MILA (55-29) (62-96-
0,190) of ROCANIS RIDERS. Up 30, and a teevee challenge, besides. You noticed that,
right? HERMES viciously subdued MILA in a popular 2 minute brutal Challenge fight.
I bet Mila wishes somebody ELSE had gotten the challenge through.
TITAN (21-5070) (45-28-1,185) of BLACKEST PRIDE TV challenged MIMR (82-3783)
(61-41-2,271) of SOL INVICTUS. Up lots. Why do I always have to do the math? I
didn't, you know, study in school. 86. TITAN handily defeated MIMR in an action
packed 1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Wow, that was, like, totally titanic.
For the Lord Marshall: WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (60-37-0,285) of DARKMOON TV
challenged LORD LIGHTSPEED (33-2928) (38-29-3,215) of LUROCIANS II. Down 70.
WOUNDWORT devastated LORD LIGHTSPEED in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight.
And Woundwort is still Lord Marshall, and thank you for writing a column, too. We
appreciate it. Well, some of us do.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Funny Bunny -- You know, you have more fights in your loss column than I have total
F.E. but that's fine. You are persistent and you probably didn't start out with the
triple seventeens that I did. -- MIMR
Goldie -- If you're looking for skills, try someone from Rhyme Tyme if you can reach
them. -- Sampsa
Jorja -- Regrettably, none of our fighters matched this time. Sometimes I challenge
your fighters just for the personals that follow. -- Bobby Bigfoot
Bindi -- For a cold-blooded, scaly not-human, you look pretty good, ma'am. This
being Hands Across the Species Lines Week (and no, you cannot have my hand, I'm still
using it!), would you care to join me at the Wolf's Head for a sociable drink? --
Redfox, kept around for continuity's sake and not thrilled with it, but what can a
mere gladiator do?
Royland -- It is clear that Debby Tonte has you pegged. A mean, conniving son-of-a-
she-demon you are! (Did you think I would malign a perfectly decent family of
canids?) You are obviously one to take unfair advantage of a woman, and I wouldn't
be surprised to find that you gossip in the locker room, either! But be warned, I am
informed and alert now, I will not be so easy next time. -- Tigress
Lord Fireflash -- You know, that could be handy for those days when the fire just
will NOT light. Or for doing stir-fry that doesn't need more than a kiss of heat.
Do you have a day job? Because if not, I'm thinking of opening a little fried-fish
cafe, and if you would care to drop by and help out, I'm sure we could come to an
agreement. -- Lulu
P.S. I don't know about "would've won," but with my special cast-iron skillet, it
would have been a different fight.
Loping Wolf -- (surprised look) You saw honor in that fight? Where? In your one
hundred sixty-six fights against my fifty-five? -- Whitewing the critical
P.S. Try to rob my caravan, buster, and you're dead meat. I won't do it in a duel,
I'll lurk with a bow until I can get you from a distance.
P.P.S. I never said I was a fool.
Hmm, this Lady Lucifreyja is obviously a tough competitor, and such a little thing,
too. I wonder if she'd like a chance to invest in a really good thing? -- U.S. Steel
Mimr -- As you see, I have retired from the arena. I have been offered a job singing
at the Wolf's Head in the evenings twice a week. Can I hope to see you there? --

17 July 2004
I am currently trying to put together a favorites chart for AD warriors. I
desperately need help with this. What I need are style, favorite rhythm (ex.:
hi/low), favorite weapons, and tactics. What would be great is if you could send me
a copy of the invite with the warrior's name, id#, and arena blacked out. This way,
I can verify that this is an actual warrior. Minis will work, too!
For those interested, I have both a challenge style vs. style and a match-up style
vs. style chart. There's about 250 fights calculated in these charts, and I'll be
happy to send a copy to anyone who asks. You can contact me (if you're a free world
player) at: Rick Stringer, Merit/East, SCI, P.O. Box 500, Georgetown, DE 19947-0500.
If you're in prison, just send a diplo to: Baphomet, Mgr. Knights Templar (568), DM
#47--North Fork. (I also have a lot of other charts and info for anyone who wants
it.) Thanks!
30 July 2004
The total number of fights calculated was reported as 250 fights. This is a
misprint. It should have read "over 2,500 fights." -- Baphomet
