It was a dark and stormy night, and no two ways about it. Definitely night, the
big clock over the arena, Big Bill they called it, had struck the first hour of the
morning. The first hour was badly bruised. Very dark. The streetlamps, such as
they were, had all gone out. Perhaps the oil used to fill the lamps had run out, or
perhaps the lamplighters (magic was not used for this, due to an agreement between
the Stronghold Academy and the Union of Lamplighters and Hackney Drivers) had not
wanted to go out in the storm. And it was unquestionably stormy. A lightning
display to shame the most expensive fireworks, a continual drumroll of thunder, and
rain falling in such a deluge as might herald the end of Life as We Know It.
Bindi, the Croc from Lapur (who was able to be in two places at once due to the
special magical nature of Life on the Isle), huddled in a doorway and waited. She
didn't mind the rain, but the lightning was not something she wanted to encounter up
close and personally. And it was striking freely on trees and housetops; any minute
it might decide to target people on the streets--of whom (or which as the case might
be) there were very few. She didn't mind the waiting, either, she'd waited on river
banks for stray goats or villagers often enough. Okay, she did mind waiting. She'd
been doing it too long tonight. But she wanted Royland, and he was SUPPOSED to come
along this way sometime before morning. But there were still a lot of rainy hours
before morning.
Bindi sighed. She was supposed to wait. She would wait.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
In another doorway farther down the street, Venric, a Demon of Darkness from
Aradi, stood and waited. More patiently, perhaps, because it was a golem. But then
again, maybe it wasn't waiting patiently. With a golem it was hard to tell. Perhaps
even Venric didn't know if it was patient, as golems are seldom designed for
introspection. Not that it mattered. Venric had received orders--written orders
bearing his manager's seal--to wait here until Royland came along. What it was to do
then depended on a number of circumstances.
No matter. A golem, a GOOD golem, a DEMONIC golem, was flexible. So it waited.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Under the trees at the edge of a park, a little farther down the road, Redfox
waited, cursing the rain. This would have been a fine night to be inside by a fire,
nursing a mug of mulled cider. Or even something, some one, warmer and livelier.
Still, it shouldn't be much longer. Surely anything Royland was doing out here in
the rain would be over soon?
The Rirorni sighed and blinked at the wall of rain. No point in trying to see
anything more than two yards away. But if Royland didn't show up by the end of the
next hour, he, Redfox, was going home. Let Tigress catch her own dates. Or whatever
it was she wanted to catch Royland for....

On the other side of the park, Helyse and Lucifreya stood together under the
inadequate shelter of a single umbrella.
"If Royland has half the brains his father claims he's got, he won't be out in
this," Helyse muttered.
"Nobody has half the brains their father claims for them," Lucifreya answered.
"But still... you're right. I don't even know why WE are out in this, much less
somebody who's got a choice."
"The Master Mime didn't say why...?"
"No. Just 'Royland should be coming through the park between the first and
second hour. Wait for him and bring him back to the College'. So here we are."
Luci sighed. "Teaching at the College of Mimes is a good job, but the things we have
to do to get tenure... I don't know. Maybe it isn't worth it."

Hail again Freeblades,

Yes, I desicrated Desicration, (put some holes in him at least) so I'm still on
top and I was Lord Marshall for Halloween, like I had hoped. Now that the tournament
is behind us, I hope to see a lot more activity here. Well it looks like I have to
go now; my manager is calling me for deftness drills. Juggling daggers is tricky! I
can handle three, maybe four, but any more and someone always gets hurt.
Freeblades, never let our sands thirst for lack of sweat and blood.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Alarond says he gets rich being a spy reporter, and I want to know how! I sure
haven't seen any.

Blackest Pride got the most avoids, from Dsm4. Titan got the most challenges.
I don't know what the point is. I mean, most challenges, most avoids, what's the use
of having lots? You can only use two at a time.
There were only twenty-eight fights today. Which is awful. I mean, not
fighting is good, more fun than fighting, but you should at least show up! We could
have a party, or something. And only six challenge matches, half tv and half radio.
And three standbys fought, so that wasn't even fifty-six whole people who fought,
only fifty-three.

Well, anyway, the scribes in the Commission office say I should hurry up with
this, so here is stuff about the fights.
LULU (32-3523) (24-36-1,42) of FISHERMAN'S WHARF fought ROSELLA (103-39) (26-25-
0,100) of College of Mimes. LULU was overpowered by ROSELLA in a popular 3 minute
gory one-sided match. It isn't always that the mimes are popular, but sometimes yes.
I don't know why. People never tell me stuff like that. Never.
U.S. STEEL (49-3369) (21-24-0,45) of THE BONDS fought ROSELLA (103-39) (26-25-
0,100) of College of Mimes. U.S. STEEL was defeated by ROSELLA in an action packed 1
minute duel. Gosh, is Rosella going good today, or what? I don't know how she does
it. Do you suppose it's her hair?
FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (16-8-1,80) of LUROCIANS XI fought MAINE COON CAT (21-
5358) (20-12-0,72) of MEOW MIX. FLESH RIPPER was handily defeated by MAINE COON CAT
in a 1 minute one-sided duel. Of course. I mean, have you SEEN a coon cat? All
that hair! You could never find the flesh to rip, and while you were looking, well,
cats have claws, you know.
PLACES THE LOTION... (98-909) (7-9-5,31) of ARCANE BEACH DAY fought INERTIA (21-
5761) (15-4-1,50) of BLACKEST PRIDE. PLACES THE LOTION... was overpowered by INERTIA
in a 1 minute one-sided fray. I don't know what this means. Maybe he, like, DROPPED
the lotion this time?
BEER (71-3539) (30-37-0,100) of STUFF I BROUGHT fought WHITEWING (13-4346) (23-
40-0,81) of CARDOW HUNTERS. BEER vanquished WHITEWING in an action packed 1 minute
uneven bout. You've heard of soft shews? Well, Beer isn't one. He's a hard shoe.

SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543) (67-104-2,149) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought LOKI
(71-3798) (21-20-1,111) of ARCTIC GUARDS. SUPERIOR FORCES was vanquished by LOKI in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. But we knew about this already. Except with,
like, Redfox or somebody, Superior Forces isn't. Or maybe aren't. I never know.
THE SICKNESS (21-5327) (24-8-1,139) of BLACKEST PRIDE fought LOPING WOLF (56-
1796) (66-108-0,91) of REDHORSE. THE SICKNESS won victory over LOPING WOLF in a
popular 1 minute match. Does this mean that Loping is a sick puppy? Has he had his
shots?
ARAC IRONFIST (67-1944) (23-11-0,141) of RAZOR GRACE fought MAREI (103-37) (38-
32-2,150) of College of Mimes. ARAC IRONFIST demolished MAREI in a 1 minute one-
sided fight. I guess it's just a good thing for Arac that he didn't fight Rosella
instead. I mean, she was winning all over the place. Well, not ALL over, but you
know what I mean. Anyway, good work.
REDFOX (13-4197) (53-77-0,110) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought SUNGOD DESIGNED ME (43-
4270) (25-7-0,150) of WENSINWASIN. REDFOX was vanquished by SUNGOD DESIGNED ME in a
popular 1 minute mismatched fray. Everybody beats Redfox. Don't you sometimes
wonder how he got here at all?
HOUSE MOUSE (55-221) (120-187-2,180) of RHYME TYME fought TIGRESS (13-4471) (30-
34-0,105) of CARDOW HUNTERS. HOUSE MOUSE demolished TIGRESS in a 1 minute uneven
bout. That's the thing about random matches, which is, you never know if you're
going to fight this big, hugely experienced mouse or not.

JULIUS (64-3641) (76-93-2,168) of UNDER DURESS fought LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966)
(33-37-0,159) of LUROCIANS II. JULIUS was beaten by LORD FIREFLASH in an action
packed 2 minute fight. And blinded, too. Because those are BRIGHT flashes. Not
just fireflies or something.
SEVERUS SNAPE (18-7146) (44-27-0,197) of HOUSE SLYTHERIN fought TRYURLUCK (61-
1029) (61-59-1,180) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. SEVERUS SNAPE overpowered TRYURLUCK in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched fight. I knew somebody who hunted snapes once. He
never found any.
MONOMACH (17-3648) (28-20-3,209) of RAZOR GRACE fought SAMPSA (31-4233) (28-25-
3,172) of SOL INVICTUS. MONOMACH overpowered SAMPSA in an exciting 3 minute one-
sided match. I still haven't found out yet whether Sampsa turns into a cockroach at
night. I really want to know.
FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (94-134-1,200) of RHYME TYME fought LORD REDMOND (12-4109)
(34-30-1,178) of LUROCIANS IV. FUNNY BUNNY overpowered LORD REDMOND in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched brawl. It's those big floppy ears, is what *I* think.
And the slippers with the little-kid smiley faces on them.
KELOS (55-30) (66-94-3,189) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought RED BARON (33-1092) (36-39-
3,180) of LUROCIANS II. KELOS overpowered RED BARON in an action packed 1 minute
uneven struggle. Gosh, was the Red Baron robbing a caravan? Or is it only Redhorse
that fights caravan robbers? Sometimes I have trouble telling them apart. It's the
funny hats.
MILA (55-29) (66-99-0,200) of ROCANIS RIDERS fought WRATH OF ONE (82-11628) (17-
7-2,174) of LUROCIANS XII. MILA was handily defeated by WRATH OF ONE in a 1 minute
one-sided conflict. And I bet Mila feels funny now, losing to twenty-four-fights-
showing, and if he DOESN'T, he SHOULD. I mean, it was ONE-SIDED.

LADY EMILY (33-6626) (28-21-1,181) of LUROCIANS II fought ELRORAN (12-4386) (52-
37-2,200) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS. LADY EMILY was demolished by ELRORAN in a popular 1
minute mismatched match. Is this RUDE, or what? I mean, she's a LADY. It should be
that Elroran just, you know, snubbed her or something.
TESEN (12-4211) (49-53-1,192) of DEMONS OF DARKNESS fought PARANOIA (9-4557)
(34-8-1,206) of DSM4. TESEN was bested by PARANOIA in a crowd pleasing 2 minute
conflict. Does this mean Tesen thought everyone was out to get him (or it), or just
that he (or it) thought so? Or does it matter?
LUMP O'GORE (13-1212) (102-93-5,197) of ILLFANG PACT fought HEL (82-14331) (44-
42-0,193) of ARCTIC GUARDS. LUMP O'GORE was handily defeated by HEL in an exciting 2
minute brutal one-sided bout. I HEARD that there are better ways to make little
lumps. But you need a Mrs. O'Gore first.
HERMES (58-6016) (26-12-0,220) of MYTHICAL fought FRAIL WHALE (55-1968) (115-
166-3,195) of RHYME TYME. HERMES vanquished FRAIL WHALE in a popular 2 minute brutal
one-sided duel. I wouldn've thought Hermes would do it faster. But what do I know?
Besides how to get bloodstains out of, you know, purple robes and stuff.
KREWKUT SAUSAGE (65-6327) (28-25-0,250) of LINCOLNSHIRE fought LORD LIGHTSPEED
(33-2928) (40-34-3,191) of LUROCIANS II. KREWKUT SAUSAGE vanquished LORD LIGHTSPEED
in a popular 1 minute uneven duel. I don't know, if *I* saw a sausage with hair,
even SHORT hair, I don't think I'd want anything to DO with it.
SCOURGE (74-2857) (33-24-1,218) of DARK ANGELS fought GROGGY DOGGY (55-223)
(130-182-0,217) of RHYME TYME. SCOURGE viciously subdued GROGGY DOGGY in an action
packed 3 minute gruesome fight. Good! I am so tired of that Doggy!

Oh, challenge matches. I guess I must be almost done.
SKULL STROKER (21-5590) (19-9-0,66) of BLACKEST PRIDE challenged CROUCHING TIGER
(12-5899) (15-8-0,57) of ARENA FELINES. Down 9. SKULL STROKER devastated CROUCHING
TIGER in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. I guess Crouching should've jumped
up.
SMILING GOAT (82-20735) (13-11-0,62) of SHAVE MY POODLE challenged MOUSE NOYLE
(17-6252) (23-33-0,97) of MIDDLE WAY. Up 35. SMILING GOAT was bested by MOUSE NOYLE
in a popular 1 minute Challenge duel. Yes, well, there are days like that.
NEBUCHADNEZZAR (22-5821) (32-27-0,182) of BLADES OF WONDER challenged ROYLAND
(56-3380) (76-52-0,215) of REDHORSE. Up 33. NEBUCHADNEZZAR was overpowered by
ROYLAND in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Do you suppose Neb was waiting for
Royland, too?

Bug is just, well, it will be even MORE smug, now.

2,267) of SOL INVICTUS. Up 69. ELVIS was savagely defeated by MIMR in an exciting
2 minute gory Challenge melee. Well, what did you expect? Even the very BEST blue
suede shoes can't do EVERYTHING.

And for being Lord Marshall: TITAN (21-5070) (49-28-1,263) of BLACKEST PRIDE TV
challenged WOUNDWORT (12-4228) (66-38-0,303) of DARKMOON. Up 40. TITAN was
devastated by WOUNDWORT in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge Title fight. So it's
still Woundwort, and I think that's great, although Titan would've been just fine,
too. Congratulations and stuff.

Youngblood's Three and Out Contest

I would like to take this time to announce and invite all managers to compete in what
I think will be an awesome contest. If you haven't ever TC'd at a tourney before,
here is your chance. The contest will start Wednesday, December 1, 2004, but a
chance will be given November 17 to dark arena, only, any warrior that you do not see
fit to run in the contest. So now that I have your attention, here are the rules
(like you didn't know they were coming sooner or later).

1. Any manager participating can enter one team, only.
2. No sandbagging whatsoever. (I will keep up with it, every turn.)
3. No teams or warriors will be allowed to run after contest starts.
4. All warriors will run until they lose three times, after three losses they are
eliminated.
5. If a warrior sits out a turn, they are accounted with a loss in the contest.
This is to keep warriors with winning records from sitting out until the end of
the contest.
6. If a warrior is killed during the contest, the replacement cannot enter the
contest.
7. If a warrior is killed, bloodfeuding is allowed, but only by a warrior that is
active in the contest.
8. If a warrior is run after being eliminated, the manager is disqualified from the
contest, no questions asked.
9. Challenges are legal, up or down.
10. Contest will keep going until 1 warrior is left without three losses, and that

warrior, of course, is accounted the winner.
11. All managers participating will be asked to purchase a rollup certificate, to be
awarded to the winners of the contest.

As I have already said, and according to participation, rollups will be awarded
to the first and second place managers. So the majority and minority of the rollups
will be determined when all are accumulated.
