Rocanis:
Redfox looked up at Spirit Ridge and shuddered. He had gone that route once
before, and the memory was not something he cherished. It had been a bad time. He
was lucky he'd gotten back alive--some had not--and more or less intact. He guided
his horse in a long circle around the ridge to reach Rocanis. It would take him
hours and miles out of his way, but... he was NOT going to turn his back on Spirit
Ridge.
The Hunters were affiliated with the Bad Apples (a well-named group, in his
opinion), and he headed for their guildhouse. It was a ramshackle place, on par with
the rest of the town, and he thought it might once have been some kind of warehouse.
By the smell, a place for storing hides, and the complex of buildings just down the
slope toward the river had probably been a tannery.
"Took you long enough to get here."
Redfox wheeled his mount, his sword coming out fast. A man emerged from the
shadows. Redfox grunted and re-sheathed his sword. "You could get hurt, sneaking up
on people like that, 'Wing."
His teammate Whitewing shrugged and grinned. "Just making sure you're on the
ball. It'll be my life at risk, too, you know."
"You got sucked into this ghost business of Uncle Wolf's? I thought you had
more sense."
Whitewing shrugged. "You can stable your horse over here," he said, leading the
way around the warehouse. "It isn't a case of sense, I'm bored, okay? We came in
off the plans and settled at Dullens, and for more than a year I focused on the arena
and getting Invited to the Isle. Which did finally happen. And then... nothing
much. Same old thing. I've DONE gladiatorial fighting, and I'm tired of it. And I
figure with the Witch's guarantee of resurrection--"
"I wouldn't trust that, if I were you. They say she's insane now, and even if
she isn't, well, did you actually LISTEN to the oath? There are gaps in what SHE
promised that are big enough to drive a herd of buffalo through." Redfox dismounted
and began stripping the gear from his horse.
Whitewing was silent for several minutes. Then he said, "You took the oath,
too."
"Yeah, well, they didn't give us a lot of choices," Redfox answered. He
shrugged, forking hay into the manger. "And I was a lot younger and more idealistic
then."
"So why are you doing this, whatever it is, that Uncle Wolf wants? If you
aren't idealistic any longer."
"Uncle Wolf asked, and I owe him anything." Redfox shouldered his saddlebags
and looked toward the dark bulk of the warehouse. "Are we taking any Apples on this
adventure?"
"Apparently. I don't know which ones yet, though."
A series of sharp cracks echoed through the twilight, the ground shook, and a
bluish glare snaked through the town, spitting sparks, flaring and fading, on a
winding line as though it followed some drunkard's trail.
"That's the third time this week," Whitewing muttered. "The first time, it
happened right in front of the stagecoach from Morya, and the horses spooked--"
"Probably a very good word for it!"
"Not funny. There was a bad wreck. People crippled or dead. The second time
was midday, right through the market. Panic, people trampled, booths collapsed,
fires. If Uncle Wolf knows a way to stop this, and we can help... well, I'll be
there."

"I don't understand what this gall-fff is," the woodcutter said. "But if it
involves pastures, grass and all that, well, you can't work on it NOW. I know that.
We'll have SNOW soon. You can't do grass in the snow."
"I know that," Damoreth Stenn answered. "And I know I can't even do the
finished ski slope until next summer. But I can make a start on everything, plan,
start clearing ground--I'll need the firewood anyway--"
Joevina Saril, an ungraduated Sand Dancer from Dal Shang, interrupted, "You
shouldn't try to start everything at once. One thing at a time, start to finish, is
the best way." She squinted up at the tree-covered slopes of his property, then back
at the old farmhouse. "Better to START by remodeling the house. Lot of work to do
there, and if you get the outer shell done, you can work inside all winter."
"That'd be smart," Darlina agreed, exchanging nods with Joevina. "But if he was
smart, he wouldn't be a gladiator in the first place."
"You're too harsh," Joevina argued. "Yes, you can die, but how many jobs are
there where that is NOT a risk?" She glanced at the woodcutter. "Yours?"
He shook his head. "Not hardly. A saw slips, a tree comes down the wrong way,
a bear comes out of the woods... lots of ways to die."
"And if you have a little luck and a little knack, being a gladiator does let
you accumulate a little capital." She turned to Damoreth. "Could you have afforded
this land, much less to have any work at all done on it, if you hadn't been a
gladiator first?"
"Nope. But that doesn't mean--"
The ground shook, and the bell in the watch-house on the road at the end of the
valley started clanging irregularly, its sound muffled by the distance of two miles
but still identifiable. The woodcutter immediately ran for the open floor of the
valley, away from trees... which were swaying and groaning with the earth movements.
The three gladiators were on his heels before the first tree came down.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Oh, Novgorodny Vir! Him. You know, the one who's like a god descending, well,
falling flat on his face. He says people use phsyciks to predict wins, which maybe
the bookies do, but why would any team? Unless they were, you know, going to bet
against themselves or something. Besides, predicting doesn't work, not even for the
weather, and people have studied that for YEARS. I mean, somebody predicts that one
guy will beat another, but then in the middle of the fight, the one that's supposed
to win's nose itches and he sneezes, and the loser hits him where it hurts (a
gladiator told me that it hurts everywhere, but you know what I mean), and the winer
loses and the loser wins, and then what price the prediction? I mean, people get in
a lot of trouble for steering the bookies wrong!
Oh, and Vir thinks that the Knights of Rocanis are unsociable, or maybe Do It
Again is unsociable, I'm not sure which. As if! They're both great bunches and lots
of fun to party with. It isn't the same at ALL if Do It Again avoids Knights of
Rocanis. That's just business. You know.
And Alvin got the most challenges, which fortunately are NOT horses, because
horses cost a lot to feed and they make a mess on the streets besides, and why would
he want horses for a fast food joint? I'm not getting this. Does Vir mean Alvin
would COOK the horses, or use them to deliver pizzas? This is all just loose talk,
if you ask me.
We had twenty-eight fights, which is okay, but more would be better. And no, I
do NOT get paid by how many fights you guys have! The very idea! But Free Blades is
the best, and we should share it. Only two standbys, so it's like there were
actually twenty-seven fights, or something. Nobody died. Eight challenges, but they
were all radio, not a tv in the lot. Too bad, but we've got another tourney coming,
so let's do better, okay?

1,86) of PHILANTHROPISTS. RUDRA overpowered ALDALDON in a popular 1 minute one-sided
match. And what I hear is, he was RUDE, too. Probably the name. It makes a
difference.
MOUSE NOYLE (17-6252) (52-81-0,99) of MIDDLE WAY fought COMRADE KOOK (12-6339)
(27-23-1,64) of CULTS-R-US. MOUSE NOYLE overpowered COMRADE KOOK in an action packed
1 minute one-sided fight. I don't think this should be allowed. I mean, people will
say how mice are cute. Well, I know better. Mice are, you know, total pests. They
get into things and chew them up and make messes, and, listen, this is perfectly
TURE: they carry diseases, too. I think we should kick this Mouse OUT of here. Of
course, he's over one hundred fights, so if Jorja actually does what she SAYS, he IS
out of here at the Split.
MALT-O-MEAL (60-7527) (27-13-1,171) of CHILDHOOD TRAUMA fought JADRA (61-3379)
(20-5-1,111) of PHILANTHROPISTS. MALT-O-MEAL was handily defeated by JADRA in an
action packed 2 minute mismatched bout. If Jadra used his hands, does that mean that
he was playing with his food? I don't think Malt-o is all that bad, so long as you
don't put it up your nose.

of I AM SAM. D was overpowered by SAMURAI in a popular 1 minute uneven duel. This
was an upset, which means that the people who tried to predict it were wrong, and the
bookies were upset.
WWW.QUAM.COM (82-4467) (32-39-4,180) of EASTERN HORDE 2 fought MAREI (103-37)
(38-32-2,150) of the College of Mimes. WWW.QUAM.COM was overpowered by MAREI in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided bout. Wow, this had got to be totally embarrassing
for the quam guy. It was probably the full moon, though. Full moons mess up all
kinds of things.
CORRUPTION (82-22745) (18-5-0,176) of THE BROTHERHOOD 40 fought NYZEIL OGLATA
(17-6753) (23-10-1,123) of PHILANTHROPISTS. CORRUPTION beat NYZEIL OGLATA in an
action packed 1 minute fight. I knew a professor of politics once who told me that
Corruption will always win in the end. Then a lot of people get revolting, and it
all starts over again. Don't ask me what "it" is.

(32-28-1,130) of the College of Mimes. YAMA subdued XHUGHA KARGARIT in a popular 4
minute gruesome fight. This is okay. I always have suspicions about someone whose
name starts with a ecks. It's unnatural. Or foreign. Maybe both.

(28-11-0,173) of PHILANTHROPISTS. SAMARIUM vanquished ENLIGHTENED BEING in a popular
1 minute mismatched fray. The Kung-Fu Masters are always telling me--when I go
around to the different arenas not on the Isle, you know--that enlightenment is a
Good Thing. But then stuff like this happens, and I have to wonder, good for what?

4482) (26-21-2,173) of EASTERN HORDE. KYRLANIA vanquished AZREAL ELS III in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided match. Gee, with not even two hundred more fights?
Gosh, what a shock.

(29-30-0,167) of PHILANTHROPISTS. REQUIEM devastated DRIZZT in a popular 1 minute
one-sided contest. Of course! Everyone knows that Drizzzzt can't carry a tune for
coffee.

mismatched fight. Good. I always like to see a fossil go down. I know, it's
totally modern of me, I mean, fossils are, like, antique! But I figure, that's what
museums are for. Or Primus.

73-4,206) of SAND DANCERS. MOJO-JOJO was overpowered by DARLINA in an exciting 2
minute brutal one-sided bout. Does this mean that Mojo-Jojo won't get the contract
for Mongolian Stir Fry at the new resort?
FUNNY BUNNY (55-1862) (148-157-2,208) of RHYME TYME fought T-BONE (13-3139) (48-
35-0,190) of LEGION OF DUMB. FUNNY BUNNY was handily defeated by T-BONE in a 2
minute mismatched bout. So who belongs to what legion now, huh?

a 1 minute one-sided duel. Well, bummer. You know Duplicate Redundancy has this new
strategy where they do everything twice? Or oftener, sometimes. Well, twice the
injuries isn't a good thing.

pleasing 1 minute mismatched bout. I don't get this. Shouldn't they go together?

sided battle. Yes, well, one way or another, she's leaving, Noreaster. And, hey,
skills, right?

(22-13-1,181) of KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS. PARTY'S OVER demolished MORLENA in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched match. Well, I can understand that, I guess. I mean, I
feel devastated when a really good party finally ends, too.

(87-124-0,199) of THE DRAGON FIST. ANTHRAXUS was overpowered by CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a
popular 1 minute one-sided melee. I can't help it, I just keep thinking of Anthraxus
as something at the post office and everybody getting upset. So I guess I'm sort of
glad he lost, even if it was to a fossil. Well, they have to be good for something,
don't they?

(116-81-1,211) of BLOOD KNIGHTS. TRASH QUAM was vanquished by TRYURLUCK in a 1

you know? Always, pick-up-the-trash day. Of course, if you could get a job being
the one who does the picking up, that might be cool!

The time is fast approaching and soon the SLAUGHTERHOUSE 3 will be upon us. 9 teams
(a total of 18 managers) have announced for what promises to be a fierce competition
in DM 45. You still have time to join the fun!
ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS:
*Find a Partner
*Declare your intentions in the Stormcrowe newsletter to enter before the first turn
of the contest. You may also email or diplo Master Darque.
*Each manager entering the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse must submit one (1) Team Roll-Up
Certificate. Only certificates will be accepted for entry. All certificates
submitted will be used during the course of the contest as prizes.
*RU certificates must be received on or before the first turn of the contest which is
Stormcrowe Turn 263 (running approximately December 4th, 2007). You may diplo them
to Master Darque or have them shipped directly to him. Email MD for a home address.
RULES and SCORING
Rules and Scoring information for the Slaughterhouse will be posted every turn in the
Stormcrowe newsletter beginning with Turn 260 and in a final all arena ad in
November.
PRIZES
ENDURANCE AWARD: One (1) +1 Bonus Potion will be given to every team that competes
in 60 of the 65 contest fights.
KILL MASTER AWARD: The individual manager with the most kills will receive a Limited
Immortality Potion. This potion may be applied to one (1) warrior. He/she will be
resurrected ONE-TIME if they are killed in Basic D2.
TOP TEAM AWARD: Each manager on the winning team will receive the following prize
pack for their Slaughterhouse Dominance:
*One (1) +1 Bonus Potion
*Favorites Knowledge for one (1) Warrior
*Undisclosed amount of Team RU Certificates
Special note from RSI on prizes: All contest prizes must be used within three
months. All contest prizes may only be used on a living warrior on the participating
contest team in DM 45. The immortality potion may resurrect a warrior one time,
after a death in DM 45 only, after which time the potion disappears.
