DM 65 DAL SHANG (turn 444): MAN-O-WAR of TIL DEATH DO US PART (Killjoy, mgr.) REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER Listen, here we are, and Hal has been acting up! Or out. I forget which. Maybe both. It's hard to tell with golems. None of the personals came through, or the Lord Marshall's column, or anything, and we're lucky they even gave me the fight notes. I mean, people were asking why I needed them, and why not let the golem spy reporter--it was the Alarond golem, you didn't want to here that, did you?--take the report. Because it would be FASTER. Is faster always better? I mean, cheeze louize with chives on it, guys, some things are better done by real people. Golems already do too much. So what we've got here, besides being the best regional arena on the Isle, is thirty-three fights with eight standbys. That's maybe a little much, but the standbys have bills to pay, too, I guess. Eight challenges, one tv and the rest radio. And I think I saw the hearse, so somebody probably died, too. Inconsistent Fury was most avoided by Angels of Pain. Sounds like a good deal to me. Who needs angelic pains? Superior Forces (tW) got the most challenges. More, it says here, than the Lord Marshall. Uh-huh. And the Lord Marshall fought on HIS challenge, so what does that mean? Don't ask me! Some scribe in the Commission Office of Statistics came up with that one. The fights: WEE MAN (19-5071) (15-12-0,57) of CUNNING RUNTS fought FREDERICK DOUGLASS (5- 4424) (18-6-1,81) of I'M HISTORY. WEE MAN was demolished by FREDERICK DOUGLASS in a popular 1 minute one-sided duel. Wee is new here, and I don't think I've seen Freddy before either. Is this good that new guys should fight each other, or would it be better if some Old Free Blades Hand smacked them around? JEREMY CAMP (43-4626) (14-6-0,67) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE fought BITTER ALMOND (103-41) (14-16-4,50) of the College of Mimes. JEREMY CAMP demolished BITTER ALMOND in a 1 minute mismatched match. Which is, you know, why Almond is Bitter. Well, part of the reason. If you'd been fighting on the isle for years and never got a single change in your record or anything, I bet YOU would be bitter, too. KRYSTAL MEYERS (43-4635) (16-4-0,52) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE fought BITTER ALMOND (103-41) (14-16-4,50) of the College of Mimes. KRYSTAL MEYERS demolished BITTER ALMOND in a 1 minute one-sided struggle. Especially if you had to fight more than once in a day and STILL didn't get anything for it. I know we need standbys, but this is, like, totally hard on them, if you ask me. TWIG LITE ZONE (56-3537) (19-15-1,71) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought PANE (35-3822) (17-14-1,55) of LOST CAUSE. TWIG LITE ZONE viciously butchered PANE in a crowd pleasing 2 minute brutal fight. Why? And does this mean that Pane really IS a lost cause? I didn't even know he was ANY kind of cause. This is albendranious. DOOMSDAY DEVICE (65-4854) (20-22-0,57) of REIGNING DOOM fought MOSSIE ROCKTROLL (56-3549) (17-14-1,54) of INCONSISTENT FURY. DOOMSDAY DEVICE was savagely defeated by MOSSIE ROCKTROLL in an exciting 2 minute fray. Well, no wonder! I didn't like the idea of some old Doomsday Device, either! I mean, who has time for a doomsday? There's plenty of stuff still to be done. Can't we reschedule doomsday for, oh, in th next millenium, maybe? DARKNESS ABOVE (65-4856) (21-11-0,76) of REIGNING DOOM fought LUCIFREYJA (103- 40) (19-21-1,90) of the College of Mimes. DARKNESS ABOVE overpowered LUCIFREYJA in a 2 minute brutal one-sided fight. Well, this is almost, you know, reasonable. I mean, I've SEEN Luci--we all call her Luci walking around with a black cloud over her head all the time. She's gloomy! SHEN (65-4973) (20-11-0,88) of BATTLE SCHOOL fought LUCIFREYJA (103-40) (19-21- 1,90) of the College of Mimes. SHEN vanquished LUCIFREYJA in an exciting 4 minute brutal one-sided fray. And this might be why--two fights in a row, just like Bitter Almond, and both losses, and no improvement of her record, and all that stuff. It isn't easy being a standby. SUPERCHICK (96-2999) (6-5-3,41) of KEYS 2 THE KINGDOM fought LUCIFREYJA (103-40) (19-21-1,90) of the College of Mimes. SUPERCHICK was defeated by LUCIFREYJA in a 2 minute fight. Yes, okay, THREE fights in a row for Luci, but she got to win this one, so I figure it isn't quite the same. Well, it isn't at ALL the same. ALE'CHAI TALLSKY (35-4026) (23-2-0,92) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought JOHN TYLER (5- 4420) (28-6-0,81) of I'M HISTORY. ALE'CHAI TALLSKY handily defeated JOHN TYLER in a 3 minute mismatched bout. I'm not seeing why this was called mismatched. Sure, there was a lot of back and forth, but that's just good action. It's supposed to go like that. FALLING ROCK (29-4286) (30-51-0,100) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought DICKY V GOES POSTAL (11-6940) (12-9-1,59) of ARMED & GREGARIOUS. FALLING ROCK was vanquished by DICKY V GOES POSTAL in a 1 minute one-sided fray. This is like a Right of Passage here, beating Falling Rock. Everybody does it. Doesn't matter what kind of record you come in with. Lots of people wonder how Falling managed to graduate at all. It isn't like Lapur is EASY, after all. DAGA TERS (56-2627) (27-17-1,112) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought VELOXI (38-4233) (15-5-0,100) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. DAGA TERS was overpowered by VELOXI in an action packed 1 minute brutal one-sided bout. I wondered about this one. Does this mean that Daga's fury is now blended to a consistent state? And if it does, well, so what? Inquiring minds might not really care, but feel like asking something. Silly minds. JEO THE SONGSMITH (1-3260) (44-84-0,137) of BLUE EYRIE fought NAKHA ADIASO (56- 2615) (25-29-0,133) of INCONSISTENT FURY. JEO THE SONGSMITH viciously subdued NAKHA ADIASO in a popular 5 minute gruesome match. What *I* heard was, Nakha tried to yodel and he was off-key and Jeo couldn't stand it, which made Jeo vicious. Of course, he might have been vicious to begin with, but maybe not. You never know. BLACK WOLF (29-4194) (46-44-1,176) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought NYZEIL OGLATA (17- 6753) (27-19-1,119) of PHILANTHROPISTS. BLACK WOLF overpowered NYZEIL OGLATA in a popular 1 minute one-sided match. One-sided? No kidding! It was practically no- sided. Well, unless Nyzeil has hidden tourney fights, but even so, the ranking must mean something. Mustn't it? DRIZZT (40-4146) (30-34-0,177) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought WONDER BUBBLE (56-3522) (21-16-2,121) of INCONSISTENT FURY. DRIZZT vanquished WONDER BUBBLE in a 1 minute mismatched fray. Some days I really wonder about our handicapper. I mean, eight standbys, and we still get matches this far out of step? What is it with this guy? DESERT GYPSY (56-2105) (32-20-3,194) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought DREHVIN (103- 34) (75-45-7,200) of the College of Mimes. DESERT GYPSY vanquished DREHVIN in an action packed 1 minute one-sided match. Somehow it seems to me that these names match. Don't ask me how, that's for people who study deep thoughts and hidden meanings and stuff like that. You won't catch ME losing sleep over that kind of thing. After all, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and you should put it out right away because it takes DAYS to get the smell out of your hair. Who wants to go around with hair that smells like a cigar? DREAM WEAVER (56-1959) (35-24-1,206) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought ARUNDA ROCKTROLL (103-35) (60-40-2,190) of the College of Mimes. DREAM WEAVER was unbelievably bested by ARUNDA ROCKTROLL in a 7 minute contest. I don't know what took Dream Weaver so long, but I figure that's probably why the clerk who writes these silly sentences didn't believe it. His attention wandered, and when he looked back, DW had won. So there. ALDALDON (56-3913) (27-15-1,182) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (102-142-4,169) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. ALDALDON overpowered KOOKABURRA in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-sided match. Heck, I wish Kooky would get inducted. Those cookies are STALE now. ENLIGHTENED BEING (26-4642) (32-16-0,194) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (88-204-3,167) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. ENLIGHTENED BEING was overpowered by THE QUICKLING in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Well, listen, a really Enlightened Being would have DEFEATED that old Quickling. Why were you goofing off like that? JELIAH BIGABO (35-3676) (53-29-2,185) of PHILANTHROPISTS 3 fought CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (111-141-0,194) of THE DRAGON FIST. JELIAH BIGABO was overpowered by CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a 1 minute mismatched brawl. Tcha! I always wanted to say that, and this seemed like a good time. Maybe I'll do it again next cycle, if I remember. JADRA (61-3379) (24-14-1,185) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought COMRADE KOOK (12-6339) (46-45-2,209) of CULTS-R-US. JADRA devastated COMRADE KOOK in a 1 minute uneven duel. I guess that's what Comrade would call an unpleasant surprise, huh? Too bad, but it happens. RAORK ROKIOS (70-1526) (34-20-0,191) of ORKOGRE CASTLE fought *LEATHER* (65- 3336) (31-24-3,181) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES. RAORK ROKIOS handily defeated *LEATHER* in a 2 minute one-sided conflict. Listen, Leather, the little stars may look pretty, I don't say otherwise, but they don't help you fight better. Maybe if you saved the stars for after the fight? MIMOSA (32-4294) (27-21-1,204) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought MAC (35-2993) (59-47- 0,198) of LOST CAUSE. MIMOSA demolished MAC in a popular 1 minute mismatched match. Hey, we've got an argument in the office here. Some people say a mimosa is a tree with, like, pompom type flowers--pink ones. And some other people say mimosa is a drink. With an umbrella in it. I don't see why it can't be both, but these clerks are insisting it's got to be one or the other. So, which is it? NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (150-123-0,229) of DARKLINGS fought JUDGE (56-119) (65-43- 2,203) of INCONSISTENT FURY. NIGHTCAP devastated JUDGE in a 1 minute mismatched conflict. Never drink before a fight, Judge. Especially not a nightcap, because of it having stuff in it to make sure you sleep well. POINT (56-633) (39-50-1,220) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought ROBIN OF SHEW-WOOD (103-33) (1-0-1,220) of the College of Mimes. POINT was luckily beaten by ROBIN OF SHEW-WOOD in an exciting 2 minute brutal fight. Robin says it wasn't luck, it was good management and superior height, but he always says that. SMUG BUG (55-2900) (84-157-0,211) of RHYME TYME fought BARBARIAN KNIGHT (70-565) (26-22-0,196) of DISPOSABLE HEROES. SMUG BUG overpowered BARBARIAN KNIGHT in an action packed 1 minute one-sided fight. Darn bug. Ah, the challenge matches! Great, it means we're making progress, and some days it's hard to tell. ANTONIUS (19-5063) (19-9-0,94) of IDES OF MARCH challenged CEDAR (29-4319) (27- 38-2,66) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 28. ANTONIUS was defeated by CEDAR in an action packed 1 minute Challenge duel. Oops! LUCRETIUS (32-4687) (25-10-3,100) of ROMAN HEROES challenged TYI VELWIC (56- 2609) (18-31-0,48) of INCONSISTENT FURY. Down 52. LUCRETIUS vanquished TYI VELWIC in a 2 minute gruesome uneven Challenge duel. Why? No, honestly, I really want to know. CORNELIUS (31-3485) (29-6-1,145) of CAESAR'S POOL HALL challenged STONETOOTH (29-4560) (34-55-0,129) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 16. CORNELIUS handily defeated STONETOOTH in a 1 minute uneven Challenge fight. An old reliable. DREAD (32-4666) (21-8-0,166) of ANGELS OF PAIN challenged SEKHAT (7-2251) (30- 40-2,174) of CASTAWAYS. Up 8. DREAD vanquished SEKHAT in an exciting 1 minute bloody mismatched Challenge fight. You know, it doesn't look to me like anyone but Caesar and Dark One challenged. That's too bad. Challenging might help you win fights, you know. That's what Olaf says, anyway. ARTEMIDORUS (17-6864) (45-8-1,169) of FIELDS OF ELYSIUM challenged TALL TREE (29-4380) (25-70-0,148) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 21. ARTEMIDORUS savagely defeated TALL TREE in a crowd pleasing 2 minute Challenge match. People are always doing this. Just call us Little Darkholm or something. Really, some of these "always lose" guys should retire. They're getting boring. CLAUDIUS (13-2860) (71-52-2,198) of I, CLAUDIUS challenged SUPERIOR FORCES (33- 4543) (118-171-3,183) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. Down 15. CLAUDIUS viciously subdued SUPERIOR FORCES in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. This is Most Challenged Superior Forces, mind you. The TV challenge, and congratulations on having it: DEFIANCE (32-4619) (34-10-1,224) of ANGELS OF PAIN TV challenged FLAMING FLEA (70-499) (30-29-2,213) of MIDNIGHT HOUR. Down 11. DEFIANCE devastated FLAMING FLEA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. I figure this is a good job sort of thing. I mean, flaming fleas? That does NOT sound like a good idea. For the title: NATAS (11-6531) (37-20-0,255) of DO IT AGAIN challenged AIN GOBLINBANE (70-678) (53-26-1,229) of ECCENTRIC DWARVES. Down 26. NATAS was handily defeated by AIN GOBLINBANE in a 1 minute Challenge Title match. Aha! This must mean that Natas is a goblin, because Ain baned him like it was going out of style. For now, our apologies. -- the Editor 29 April 09 Greetings All -- This is Vincent Michaels, "the Rake", mgr. of the Stormbringers out of DM 33 Niatoli Island, back after a relatively long layoff. I come back to my arena to find only two other teams there. Terrible! I'm calling on all you managers out there who have inactive teams in Niatoli to put them back in the game. Also, anyone else who wants to come check out our little island are welcome. Good food and a lot of good gambling, and you will have a chance to smack around Gen. GirlPants and his band of Ravaged Queens. Great fun. Come one, come all! 4 May 09 Players of Duel 2: RSI wants to try, in a few arenas, a system that rewards role-play and general arena involvement. Our thoughts at this time are as follows, and feedback is earnestly solicited: 1. What to reward. a. Spotlights--they don't have to be involved and lengthy storylines, and in fact, my own inclination is to say: anything game related and original (i,e,, not a reprint), maybe set a minimum length. I use TOGS here as my model--half a column as formatted for the newsletter, and we don't judge the quality of the writing (so long as the editor isn't grossed out), just the intent to make a positive contribution. b. A dm column where one is "due." Again, no judgment on quality of writing, should be dm-related, and I would say (this is just me) a minimum length of maybe five lines. c. Personals. More than just "you suck," or "good fight." How much more doesn't really concern me, and quality, other than "not offensive to the editor," should not be an issue. We don't want to encourage participation and then muzzle it. d. It has been suggested that a reward point or two be offered for running a full team. We could include this, but my own inclination would be to say that there would be no points for this, but that those who don't make a clear effort on this (accidents happen, so maybe something like "when the three-turn total of fights is below twelve"?) aren't eligible for points on any turn until they get it back up to a full team. 2. How to reward it. a. We've been thinking nebulously about some kind of point system, obviously, as an example, say 3 points for a spotlight, 2 for a column, 1 for personals, more points here for what takes more effort, but some points for any effort. This is in no way final! But some way to keep track of who is contributing and how much, and as non- subjective as possible; this would be noted as each newsletter would be proofed. A way to clearly identify who's sending in what would help, but I can work it out by referring to the warrior listings if I have to. b. But, assuming a point system, do the rewards, whatever they end up being, go to the player who achieves a certain point total? Is this calculated per turn, or as a running total over as many turns as it takes to reach that point? Or to the player with the highest total on any given turn? What about ties? c. What do the points get the player? The current thought is X points gets a free fight, probably replacing the "Popularity Leader's" free fight in the relevant arena. That suggests only one player getting a role-play free fight on any given turn. Is this enough to encourage the newsletter participation we're hoping for? Should we convert "This Week's Favorite" to a role-play free fight also? Or handle rewards in some other way entirely? 3. Where it happens. The current thought is, try it in four arenas: one in each region, and one slow arena. Who picks the arenas in question? I'd be inclined to rule out those that are doing fairly well already (Ardivent, Sunset, Lapur; Arkers, Morya, North Fork), but is that wise? Or even fair? Darned if I know. Places where it is NOT currently intended to happen: Transfer arenas. Maybe rule out the no-tourney arenas as current candidates, too? If this seems to work well enough to be worth the effort, should we consider extending it to more, eventually to all non-transfer, arenas? This is not a "someday down the line we might" concept. We want to do this, and SOON. Your feedback would be appreciated, for, against, changes, anything. You can email me directly at jputney zianet com (make sure it says DM in the subject line) or send a diplo to scribe, any arena. the Scribe P.S. Staff members not to be eligible for role-playing free fights. 5 May 09 The Battle Royal V is upon us! Come join one of the original contests that has had some of the games best managers involved in the past. DM 18, Talcama, some consider it to be the crown jewel of the Delarq cities is where this contest will take place. The Battle Royal is intended to be a play as you want, play what you want Delarquan style contest with very few rules. While I'd love to say, "NO AVOIDING" is the only rule (and that wouldn't be too far off), I must spell out situations that can and have occurred and require additional clarification. The advantages of this format: 1) Simple. 2) No penalty for DAs. 3) No restrictions on warriors entered into the contest (baggers, TC mods, etc all welcome) 4) No penalty for not fighting. 5) It isn't a race where 21 wit and favorite learn determine the victor. 6) Losing a warrior (or even your whole team) doesn't eliminate you from contention. 7) It is possible to overcome almost any deficit. And this has been proven, with managers making huge point swings in short periods of time! 8) It is a contest designed to show manager skill rather than warrior ability. There are a few disadvantages: 1) There is no set end. It is possible for this contest to go on indefinitely. In practice, this format has worked very nicely in the past and I expect it will continue to work well. 2) You cannot avoid (But that is part of the fun and the head to head nature of this contest requires this rule.) 3) It encourages bloodshed. 4) Baggers and experienced warriors have an advantage over new warriors. Battle Royal Rules: - Any team in Talcama is eligible to participate. There are no restrictions on warriors (baggers, TC prize modified, etc). However, any warrior that fights for your team is considered in the BR. - Teams may not avoid any other team within the contest. (Note that you may avoid teams outside the contest but you do so at your own risk.) Avoiding a team on the turn they enter the Battle Royal is not considered against the rules (since you couldn't know the team wasn't part of the BR). The suggestion is not to avoid at all. Assur (the contest moderator) gets an avoid report every turn and will catch people avoiding! - Managers may only enter a single team in the contest. - Any manager with more than one team in Talcama may not challenge any other contest warrior with their non contest team(s). The intention is that no advantage can be gained by having multiple teams in the arena. ****Failure to comply with the above rules*** 1st offense: Disqualification from the prize, but you may still participate. 2nd offense: Warning. 3rd offense: Removal from Battle Royal. - If a manager decides to switch teams, his score will start back at 0. This is to prevent a manager from sweeping the contest with several teams of sandbaggers. Can a manager use this clause to go from a negative score to zero? Yes. I realize this is sort of cheating, but I'd rather have a manager start over with a new team than drop out of the contest. Even so, they have to start at 0 and must gain 25 points. - If your warrior loses a contest fight because of an input error and this error is verified by RSI, you will have a point added to your score. The head to head records will remain the same and any points gained by another manager will remain on that manager's record. - As soon as you are announced in the newsletter, you are officially entered into the Battle Royal. Scoring begins on that turn! You are expected to follow the rules that turn and every turn following. Your team may enter any time they wish during the course of the Battle Royal. - If you are exiting the Battle Royal, you are not removed until the turn after your intention is published. You are asked to follow the rules for that turn (either through not avoiding or not running your warriors). Scoring: - Scoring begins the turn your team declares participation. - Scoring continues through the turn your team withdraws. - Score is calculated by: Wins+Kills-Lossses. - Only fights with other B.R. participannts count towards your score, but they count whether they are challenges or random match-ups. - First Manager to 25 points wins! - In event of tie, B.R. continues until one team that has reached 25 points is ahead of all other participants. Disputes: - The attempt has been made to make these rules as complete and bulletproof as possible, but Tripwire will resolve any disputes as fairly as he is capable. Prizes: For the Winner: 6 Months Free Play in Talcama for the winning team (doesn't include tourneys)! One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18)! One Limited Damage Bump Potion (one time use, up to max for stats, used on DM 18 warrior)! One Minor Stat Switch Prize (up to 2 points can be moved from one stat to another stat on a new rollup in DM 18, before adding 14 points. This prize can be used up to 3 months from the contest end. Both points must be used in the same place (can't take one from a speed and one from deftness and add one to wit and will)). One Favorites Knowledge Potion (to be used on a 5+ FE warrior in DM 18). Rename One Dark Arena Creature in DM 18, which will be renamed for 6 Months or until the Ladies decide to return it to the previous name. All potions renaming prizes must be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest. Endurance Award (available to all participants): One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18). To qualify for the Endurance Award you must participate in 90% of the total fights possible over the course of the BR. If you don't have time to make it into the BR by the first turn, there will be a two turn window before the counter will start for new teams. The fights do not have to be BR point scoring fights, just 90% of the total possible participation over the course of the contest! So, if the contest runs 26 turns, there are 130 fights possible. Your team must have 117 fights during those 26 turns to be eligible. All prizes/potions subject to RSI's interpretation of how they are used/implemented. RSI said the faves knowledge must be used on an Inits warrior or higher and set at 5FE or more. Tripwire LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DEFIANCE devastated FLAMING FLEA in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight.
