WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
The Caesar Chronicles: Observations from the Pinnacle of Greatness
A Day in the Life of a Free Blades Legend...
The nighttime streets and winding alleyways of Chimlevtal are home to many
perils; cutthroats, pickpockets and drunken scoundrels are among the many denizens of
the night. Venturing through the maze of cobbled streets alone after dark could be
hazardous and even fatal. Under the backdrop of the mighty Chimlevtal Coliseum, a
proud and fierce Free Blades warrior city-state thrived. Here, the fighting was
deadly and motivated by vicious, often ancient, rivalries. The Council Of Lords,
famous historians of this time honored city, and other factions sparred regularly in
the monthly games. While Chimlevtal had seen better times, rumors of a stimulus
package and bail out by the city council fueled false hopes in the minds of the
everyday citizen. The grim reality remained, however, that only Chimlevtal's most
loyal guild houses kept her games afloat during these bleak economic times....
Among those guild houses, the great Roman banner flew proudly in the defiant
Chimlevtal wind. Long ago, a young Caesar had come to this city, in search of new
adventures and eager to start a new Roman franchise. Chimlevtal, a place where only
the strong could move forward and plant their spear in the arena sands. Here Caesar
built his pool hall, a massive facility housing championship games and an annual high
stakes nine ball tourney. With over 100 beers on tap, legendary comfort food that
included heaping portions of shepherd's pie, bacon mushroom cheddar burgers to die
for and mammoth buffalo wings imported from a poultry company owned by a Caesar
subsidiary on the outskirts of Zuwayza. The sweet potato french fries came with a
superb honey mustard dipping sauce and the onion rings were battered and fried to
deep perfection. Here you could order delicious pulled pork sandwiches, giant
barbecued ribs that fell from the bone and brisket that was slow cooked, rubbed with
secret seasoning and aged to perfection. And if you ordered from the Caesar's Chop
House section of the menu, an ala carte steak dining experience of a lifetime awaited
you. Caesar's giant cattle farm on the outskirts of Aljafir was famous throughout
Alastari for producing the finest cuts of beef imaginable. Add a football sized
baked potato loaded with butter, sour cream and bacon and you have one serious meal.
With a large and well stocked wine cellar, any grape varietal could be had, including
Caesar Estates Private Cellar Merlot from Caesar's famous Arvat winery. With over
one hundred full sized, regulation pool tables, Caesar's Pool Hall remained an
Alastari legend. Last year, Claudius of Dullens was placed on the Chimichanga Wall
of Fame after eating 67 of the fried burritos! A local record! It remained a loud,
bustling place filled with locals and travelers alike. Hustlers walked the billiard
room floor with Sneaky Pete cues and wallets laden with gold coin, eagerly seeking
unsuspecting prey. Scantly clad waitresses made their way from table to table,
serving up beers and curly cued cheese fries, another specialty of thehouse. The
clash and collision of balls, the shouts of triumph and screeches of the vanquished
echoed throughout the billiard room floor. The cigar bar provided the players with
many great rolls and the patrons lit up as coolie servants, located aloft in a hidden
ventilation chamber, labored to power a giant fan that pumped out the smoke and
scents of cooking and left them wafting through the Chimlevtal night where people far
and wide became enticed by the aroma. The business appeared recession proof as
regardless of the economic realities facing the average citizen, people simply never
forgo food and beer....
The non-descript rickshaw made its way quietly through the labyrinth of poorly
lit streets and past the rows of foreclosed and abandoned houses. A team of sweating
coolies pulled the vehicle along, a silent "heave ho" on their breath. The
passengers were none other than Caesar himself as well as his lieutenants, Trebonius
the Magnificent and Darius the Great. The men preferred to make a secret visit to
the city, fully aware that assassins lurked everywhere and the dangerous politics of
Chimlevtal could be deadly. All three carried longswords and wore hauberks of golf
club strength titanium. The rickshaw stopped before a small back door of the
Caesar's Pool Hall building. The coolies, relieved of the burden, breathed a sigh of
relief. Quickly one dropped to all fours to serve as a step for the rickshaw's three
passengers. The building door opened and the three vanished from the darkness of the
Chimlevtal night.
Once inside the crowded and bustling nightlife of the pool hall, Caesar and his
henchmen remained cloaked as they made their way down a corridor towards the
championship library room. A private room that housed the hall's finest table, a
Brunswick Zanzibar!!! A magnificent table made from a rich mix of international
woods, including Malcorn maple burl and rails of warm-grained Murskan cherry, blended
with beautifully textured, etched brass panels on ornate aprons and leg pedestals.
On an elaborate rack hanging between the booked lined walls, Caesar's prized Meucci
Original cues rested, eager to be wielded again by his pool god-like hands.
A giant pitcher of one of Caesar's favorite beverages awaited, Edelweiss 100%
Alpine Weiss Beer. The men helped themselves to the perfectly chilled brew as Darius
racked a nine ball game.
"Sire, this Banthius may have run, cowering and in shame to Home Guard or some
other refuge." stated Trebonius the Magnificent. "He was not present at the 509th
Free Blades games and his stable did not field even one warrior."
"Ha!" exclaimed Caesar triumphantly. "Perhaps we have one this war without
firing one arrow?"
"We are still winning and that is all that counts." declared Darius proudly.
"Keep the pressure up, boys. Let's see if this Banthius returns on Turn 510..."
stated Caesar
The hour was late, the beer supply endless and the billiard table wagers
beckoned the three....

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Defiance glanced out over the seated audience and smiled. The crowd was
epecially large today. Then again that was not the problem. The tickets to the
games always sold, however it was becoming harder to find managers willing to shell
out the cost to field a team of gladiators.
This new contest promised to change that, at least somewhat. Let other
gladiators win glitzy prizes in the tournaments, the true honor was fighting for your
homeland in the Regional contests. And it had been a LONG, LONG time since they had
been fought. Probably due to some bureaucratic foul-ups or licensing confusion.
Still, now they were back and he had the honor of being the Lord Marshall the
week they were officially announced. Indeed, nothing would please him more than
being able to represent the Free Blades on the sands for the contest.
The Free Blades. Every region had its proponents. The hoity toity Andorians
with their unwritten rules and the armies of savage Darkholm with their unwarranted
cruelty. Both teams were sure to be well staffed. But what did it mean to be a Free
Blade? To Defiance it meant living by a personal code of honor that didn't have to
be dictated by others, it stood for freedom of choice and then living with any
consequences. It also meant being unpredictable and wild. No one could pin down a
Free Blade to a set course of action. He sometimes equated it with chaos, but for
some reason that word conjured up a negative connotation to many.
No matter. The call has been sent out and already the Free Blades gather. The
team would surely be formidable. Certainly the honor of the Free Blades would be
well represented.
Defiance turned his attention back to the sands. It was time to prepare and
plan.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Next to the last set of fights before the Summer Tourney, and things are GOOD
here. We have competitors, we have feuds, we have enthusiasm! I really didn't know
if the regional thing would work, you know? But it sure seems to be. Totally
tubular! We've got more people here, more teams, more managers. This is great.
We have thirty fights with NO standbys fighting today, is this amazing, or what?
Fourteen challenges, one tv and the rest radio.
Inconsistent Fury was avoided most, by Fields of Elysium. Smug Bug got the most
challenges.
The fights themselves:
WILD THANG! (29-2393) (19-15-0,87) of STREET WALKERS fought ALEX GRIFFIN (9-
4856) (16-16-1,71) of DREAM PARK. WILD THANG! overpowered ALEX GRIFFIN in a popular
1 minute one-sided match. Just too wild for him, I guess. You know how that can go.
Lots of gladiators are basically conservative.
DIRTY SANCHEZ (29-4802) (21-10-0,78) of STREET WALKERS fought JOHN TYLER (5-
4420) (29-8-0,79) of I'M HISTORY. DIRTY SANCHEZ was savagely defeated by JOHN TYLER
in an action packed 5 minute fight. They tell me--this is the scribes in the office
who tells me--that if you don't read history, you're doomed to be defeated by it.
Does this make sense to you?
MOSSIE ROCKTROLL (56-3549) (18-15-1,74) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought JEREMY CAMP
(43-4626) (16-7-0,75) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE. MOSSIE ROCKTROLL was savagely
defeated by JEREMY CAMP in a 3 minute competition. Huh, I guess Jeremy was very
positive about it.
DOOMSDAY DEVICE (65-4854) (22-23-0,74) of REIGNING DOOM fought MAD DOG MONTANA
(29-4984) (21-17-6,84) of STREET WALKERS. DOOMSDAY DEVICE was handily defeated by
MAD DOG MONTANA in a 1 minute uneven bout. Yes, well, you gotta watch out for those
mad dogs.
DARKNESS ABOVE (65-4856) (22-13-0,79) of REIGNING DOOM fought GOLDIE (29-4805)
(22-9-4,89) of STREET WALKERS. DARKNESS ABOVE savagely defeated GOLDIE in an
exciting 2 minute gruesome melee. Well, gosh. I have, you know, sympathy for
Goldie, although her tan needs work.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (89-206-3,175) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought DICKY V GOES
POSTAL (11-6940) (15-9-2,150) of ARMED & GREGARIOUS. THE QUICKLING was overpowered
by DICKY V GOES POSTAL in a 1 minute one-sided duel. What can I say, I'm always glad
to see a fossil get into trouble. I mean, after so many years on the Isle, the
fossils should be doing better, or else in Home Guard, right?
BLACK WOLF (29-4194) (47-46-1,174) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought FREDERICK DOUGLASS
(5-4424) (21-6-1,125) of I'M HISTORY. BLACK WOLF was overpowered by FREDERICK
DOUGLASS in an exciting 1 minute uneven fight. Somebody else who hasn't been reading
history, I guess. But it's kind of boring.
ALDALDON (56-3913) (28-17-1,180) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought JEO THE SONGSMITH (1-
3260) (45-86-0,131) of BLUE EYRIE. ALDALDON was unbelievably bested by JEO THE
SONGSMITH in a popular 3 minute contest. You know, this is one of those times when I
just do NOT understand where the scribes are, like, coming from when they pick their
words. How can it be unbelievable if you see it happen?
MOOSE (56-3459) (49-78-0,160) of REDHORSE fought LUCRETIUS (32-4687) (26-12-
3,102) of ROMAN HEROES. MOOSE overpowered LUCRETIUS in a 2 minute uneven fray. I
bet there are some days when you just WISH for a standby. There must be evener
matches out there, right? The Handicapper must hate Lucretius. Or he's been bribed.
I hear he gambles. The Handicapper, not Lucretius. Well, maybe Luke, too, I don't
know.
COMRADE KOOK (12-6339) (47-47-2,190) of CULTS-R-US fought DRIZZT (40-4146) (32-
35-0,180) of PHILANTHROPISTS. COMRADE KOOK was defeated by DRIZZT in an exciting 1
minute duel. What IS it with all these Drizzts? I keep expecting to see somebody
drizzting salad dressing on people.
NORMANDY (65-4916) (24-26-3,198) of DOOMSDAY4DOOMCORPS fought MOUNTAIN GOAT (56-
3700) (62-88-3,182) of REDHORSE. NORMANDY handily defeated MOUNTAIN GOAT in a
popular 1 minute mismatched competition. I hear Normandy was a champion goat-roper
last year.
JELIAH BIGABO (35-3676) (54-31-2,199) of PHILANTHROPISTS 3 fought MAC (35-2993)
(59-50-0,179) of LOST CAUSE. JELIAH BIGABO demolished MAC in an exciting 2 minute
gory one-sided bout. Mac as in... with cheese and pickles and onions and a special
sauce? Or a raincoat? I had a mac raincoat once, and IT was sure a lost cause.
Thorns, you know. Never accept when someone offers you a bed of roses.
DREAD (32-4666) (23-9-0,190) of ANGELS OF PAIN fought KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (103-
144-4,173) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. DREAD devastated KOOKABURRA in a popular 2 minute
brutal mismatched brawl. Good. Those Cookies are getting really stale anyway.
SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543) (120-172-3,219) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought GOLEM
(35-1485) (81-54-1,210) of THE PHILANTHROPISTS. SUPERIOR FORCES devastated GOLEM in
a 2 minute brutal uneven duel. I just can't get worked up about golems. It's a
thing with me, you know? I just don't warm to them at all.
CLAUDIUS (13-2860) (74-52-2,238) of I, CLAUDIUS fought NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (152-
124-0,205) of DARKLINGS. CLAUDIUS was overpowered by NIGHTCAP in a 1 minute one-
sided duel. You think it's just a glass of hot milk (yucky stuff, hot milk, unless
you put chocolate and, you know, other stuff in it too), and it turns out that it
DOES have lots of other stuff in it that you shouldn't be drinking right before a
fight. Ah, more than you want to know? Well, some days are like that.
HIMEY THE PIMP (29-730) (43-33-1,218) of STREET WALKERS fought GAZELLE (56-3701)
(64-80-0,188) of REDHORSE. HIMEY THE PIMP was viciously subdued by GAZELLE in a
crowd pleasing 7 minute bout. Wow, vicious, and for seven minutes! This is really
something. Just, you know, don't ask me what.
The challenge matches already? Well, time flies when you're having fun. Actually,
time flies like arrows, but fruit flies like bananas. I don't remember who said
that, but I guess it might be true. You never know about things like that.
HAWK NELSON (43-4636) (20-2-0,67) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE challenged FALLING
ROCK (29-4286) (31-53-0,64) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 3. HAWK NELSON unbelievably
bested FALLING ROCK in an exciting 3 minute Challenge battle. Oh, hey, this is no
surprise at ALL, even though Rock has all that experience. I mean, look at it, what
he's got is experience in losing.
SUPERCHICK (96-2999) (6-8-3,39) of KEYS 2 THE KINGDOM challenged ANTONIUS (19-
5063) (20-11-0,100) of IDES OF MARCH. Up lots. Um, 61. SUPERCHICK was demolished
by ANTONIUS in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. Naturally! But we can
hope she learned something. Like, don't challenge that far up! Or a skill or two
would probably be good. You never know.
QUINTUS (17-6913) (15-7-3,52) of FIELDS OF ELYSIUM challenged WEE MAN (19-5071)
(15-14-0,61) of CUNNING RUNTS. Up 9. QUINTUS was defeated by WEE MAN in a 2 minute
Challenge match. This one was close, and the audience was betting back and forth a
lot. Don't ask me where they get the money!
KRYSTAL MEYERS (43-4635) (19-4-0,74) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE challenged PANE
(35-3822) (18-16-1,69) of LOST CAUSE. Down 5. KRYSTAL MEYERS beat PANE in a popular
3 minute Challenge melee. I'm not getting how pane is a lost cause. Can somebody
clue me in on this?
SHEN (65-4973) (23-11-0,110) of BATTLE SCHOOL challenged CEDAR (29-4319) (30-38-
2,131) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 21. SHEN unbelievably bested CEDAR in a popular 6
minute gory Challenge duel. Well, I don't know about anybody else, but what I didn't
believe is that they kept at it for six minutes with neither one willing to
surrender!
ALE'CHAI TALLSKY (35-4026) (25-3-0,113) of PHILANTHROPISTS challenged VELOXI
(38-4233) (16-7-0,128) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. Up 15. ALE'CHAI TALLSKY vanquished
VELOXI in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. And a chicken ran around the arena
yelling that the sky was falling on Veloxi. Some days are strange.
CORNELIUS (31-3485) (32-6-1,161) of CAESAR'S POOL HALL challenged STONETOOTH
(29-4560) (34-58-0,135) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 26. CORNELIUS handily defeated
STONETOOTH in a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. Right.
ARTEMIDORUS (17-6864) (48-8-1,176) of FIELDS OF ELYSIUM challenged TALL TREE
(29-4380) (25-73-0,139) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 37. ARTEMIDORUS devastated TALL
TREE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge competition. Yep.
NYZEIL OGLATA (17-6753) (29-20-1,152) of PHILANTHROPISTS challenged SEKHAT (7-
2251) (31-42-2,171) of CASTAWAYS. Up 19. NYZEIL OGLATA vanquished SEKHAT in an
exciting 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. What are the Castaways doing here? I
thought they were in Talahya.
ENLIGHTENED BEING (26-4642) (34-17-0,193) of PHILANTHROPISTS challenged SMUG BUG
(55-2900) (86-158-0,222) of RHYME TYME. Up 29. ENLIGHTENED BEING demolished SMUG
BUG in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. This is the Most Challenged Bug,
and let him be smug about THAT loss!
GOSSAMER (35-3656) (53-43-1,191) of PHILANTHROPISTS 2 challenged CORT NIGHTJEWEL
(78-196) (114-141-0,235) of THE DRAGON FIST. Up 44. GOSSAMER slimly won victory
over CORT NIGHTJEWEL in a 5 minute Challenge contest. But not REAL slim.
NATAS (11-6531) (38-22-0,205) of DO IT AGAIN challenged ALIX (74-2701) (30-21-
0,211) of CHEYSULI & LIR. Up 6. NATAS handily defeated ALIX in an action packed 1
minute one-sided Challenge match. But the question is, will he do it again?
*LEATHER* (65-3336) (32-26-3,208) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES challenged MIMOSA (32-
4294) (29-22-1,197) of PHILANTHROPISTS. Down 11. *LEATHER* lost to MIMOSA in a 2
minute Challenge battle. Losing on a down-challenge... that's got to hurt. Well,
losing has got to hurt, I guess.
For the title:
DEFIANCE (32-4619) (37-10-1,259) of ANGELS OF PAIN TV challenged JADRA (61-3379)
(27-14-1,211) of PHILANTHROPISTS. Down 48 from the throne. DEFIANCE bested JADRA in
a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge Title fight. You'll note that there aren't any
comments about "one-sided" or "mis-matched" here. That means Jadra is TOUGH. Just
not tough enough. And congratulations to Defiance, for winning and for having a tv
challenge to use to do it. Good going!

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Artemidorus -- Eh? I thought you guys were going after, um, I forget who, but
someone else? Feel free, don't let the thought of me languishing without your
attentions stop you! -- Tall Tree, ready to sacrifice for the common good
Cornelius -- My teammate pretty much said it all. Why are you guys challenging us?
-- Stonetooth
Lucretius -- We aren't managed by Banthius, you know. Never have been. -- Cedar
P.S. That challenge was a good try, though.
P.P.S. Huh, don't see any of Banthius's guys active today. I guess that explains
it. Too bad, in a way, we were hoping that'd take some of the pressure off! Oh,
well.
Jadra -- I believe this whole business of "that ain't philanthropy" has been hashed
out elsewhere. And I could wish you'd go make hash of somebody else, too! -- Black
Wolf
Superchick -- Silly girl! Shade on a hot day is all well and good, but you shouldn't
go lying down under a rock about to fall. -- Falling Rock
P.S. Ms. Tonte, please note that I *won* that fight. Surprise is no reason for
carelessness!
