THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Defiance sat once more upon the throne as Lord Marshall of the Free Blades. He
was the most famous and, theortically, the most talented of all of the hundreds and
hundreds of gladiators in the region. And still he was not at peace. Ther Regional
Tournament was at hand. The Tournament of the Dead was nigh. There remained much to
do.
But that was not what had been troubling him the most. He had been having
strange dreams, nightmares really, ever since he had reclaimed his title. And they
all centered on the runesord, El Cid.
El Cid had been the emblem of the Lord Marshall of Free Blades ever since the
arena was created. Before that it had been the symbol of authority of the Grand
Marshall of the Army of Alastari. Before that... Who knew? It had been in the
public view for nearly a millennium. Its powers were many. It could change into any
weapon its wielder desired. It was perpetually sharp--razor sharp. It leant its
owner somewhat enhanced agility and improved vision. And who knew what else?
But in the dreams, the sword was talking to him. He had gone to the Regional
Library and done a bit of research. No former Lord Marshall had recorded any
incidence of the blade talking. But night after night, that's what he was dreaming.
Defiance examined the sword in greater detail. Whatever weapon he desired, the
sword became. So it could obviously read his mind or somehow feel his desires
through some form of empathy. Why would it not be able to speak? He had heard of
talking swords before. They were very rare--the stuff of legends--but the old
stories often told of magical talking swords.
He held the sword up and checked the edge--razor sharp, as always.
"Well, El Cid, I don't suppose you can really talk at all, can you?"
The sword throbbed a violent blood red hue in response. Defiance nearly dropped
it on the cobbled stone floor.
"Is that supposed to mean you can talk?"
The sword pulsed a soft, blue shade.
"You can talk. But in words, not only in this yes or no color speech?
Again the blue pulse.
"So go ahead and talk." Defiance encouraged it.
The violent red returned, shining brightly from the sword's blade.
"You can talk, but something is preventing you?" Defiance guessed.
Blue again. Clearly there was something going on here. An enchantment,
perhaps? Or possibly some set of conditions had to be met before it could speak.
If indeed it was a spell, Defiance knew only of a handful of wizards strong
enough to deal with something like that. Lady Sheila was not about to grant him an
audience, at least not without a long delay. The Dark One was off doing who knew
what. That left Tortured Trout. The former gladiator and Primus TV had been the
Dark One's apprentice and was now his chief of staff. He would know what to do.

An hour later Defiance stood in the laboratory of his guild's lavish tower on
the isle. Tortured Trout was handling El Cid and reading from a large, golden tome
on a jade pedestal.
"Well, Defiance, you seem to be right. There's some enchantment overlaying the
sword and has been there for some time. Clearly someone in ages past was trying to
keep El Cid from being able to speak."
The sword glowed soft blue once again.
Tortured Trout shrugged. "But why? Why now? You could have communicated with
any of the Lord Marshalls over the years."
El Cid remained obstinately silent.
Defiance stepped closer. "I have the feeling that something is happening.
Something that El Cid senses and is trying to warn us about."
The wizard thumped a meaty index finger down on the spellbook. "Here we are. A
curse of silence. It was developed by Grand Mage Thiurix, Lady Sheila's great,
great, great... Well, sufice it to say that he was her grandfather many times
removed. I wonder what he was worried about to develop such a complex silence
spell?"
The sword flared an angry red again.
Tortured Trout smiled. "Ah. And here's the counterspell."
A few moments later a glowing enchantment filled the room as the wizard spoke
words of power and sprinkled glittering dust over the sword. The curse broke with a
thunder clap and El Cid let loose a roar of centuries of frustration.
Recovering quickly from the spectacle, Defiance seized his sword and held it
aloft. It was not damaged in any way.
"So then, sword, what is so important that you felt the need to come alive at
just this time?"
El Cid glowed a satisfied golden color and, tentatively, began to speak. "I
must give you thanks, Master, for heeding me and freeing me from that horrible curse.
But at my beginning I was not forged alone. There were three of us made that night.
I was named the Blade of Balance, created to maintain this plane of existence as best
I might. Also forged were the Blade of the Heavens, which has been lost for
centuries untold. And, last, the blade of the Underworld. Meant to bring the forces
of the death and destruction to the forefront here on our plane. Who made us I was
not meant to know. However I was made to counter my brothers and, suitably, maintain
the balance of life and death."
It paused a moment, then continued, "I have had other tasks as given me over
time, and more recently have served as the sword of Free Blades. This has suited me
and my nature, as the ethos embraced by your people is much like my own. So I slept
for many years, only barely aware of what has been going on in the world. In fact
the Grand Mage Thiurix, a former owner of mine, felt that both of my brother blades
have been gone so long--lost and unknown--I would be better off sleeping and not
remembering. Thus his spell."
Defiance interrupted, "But now something has changed."
"Indeed. The Blade of the Underworld has come to life. And close to your home
city of Arvat. It plots, as it always does, to bring death to your world. If it is
not stopped, your civilization will fall and death will rule all!"
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Olaf Modeen agreed to make some notes for me, which was sweet of him--he is
sweet, you know--but sometimes he just doesn't get things right. I mean, he says
here that he remembers this place well, and it is NOT TRUE. He's Delarquan, everyone
knows that.
But he makes good notes, like I think he's saying here that Black Wolf got the
biggest point gain today, and MAYBE that Sissy Chrissy got the biggest point loss.
It's hard to be sure, because he spilled something on the notes and the ink smeared.
Beer, maybe.
Inconsistent Fury was Most Avoided by Fields of Elysium.
I think maybe Artemidorus got the most challenges.
We had thirty-seven fights, almost like the old days in a small way, with three
standbys. And fourteen challenges, but none of them were tv challenges, which is too
bad.
So, the fights:
MADNESS (32-4980) (14-3-1,46) of ANGELS OF PAIN fought WEE MAN (19-5071) (17-18-
0,54) of CUNNING RUNTS. MADNESS was subdued by WEE MAN in an action packed 1 minute
competition. I feel kind of funny about this. About Wee Man, I mean, and I'm not
sure why. I mean, if he was really small, like a little kid, I could understand it,
you aren't supposed to hit kids. But he isn't. So it must be his name.
AIRSLICER DAN (56-4093) (16-12-1,61) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought ALEX GRIFFIN
(9-4856) (16-17-1,66) of DREAM PARK. AIRSLICER DAN slaughtered ALEX GRIFFIN in a 1
minute mismatched bout. This is, like, totally not the way to come into a new place!
For either one of these guys, really.
SUPERCHICK (96-2999) (6-13-3,41) of KEYS 2 THE KINGDOM fought ROSELLA (103-39)
(26-25-0,100) of the College of Mimes. SUPERCHICK was demolished by ROSELLA in a
popular 1 minute one-sided duel. I do wonder sometimes what our handicapper is
THINKING (if he's thinking at all) when he picks the random matches.
KRYSTAL MEYERS (43-4635) (23-5-0,96) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE fought MAREI (103-
37) (38-32-2,150) of the College of Mimes. KRYSTAL MEYERS subdued MAREI in a crowd
pleasing 2 minute match. Well, I guess this one is better, and that's two of the
standbys done and away.
GERMANICUS (17-6999) (22-8-1,97) of GLADIATORS fought HAWK NELSON (43-4636) (24-
3-0,98) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE. GERMANICUS was outlasted by HAWK NELSON in a
popular 7 minute fray. Seven minutes is almost respectable, way to go, Hawk.
DAGA TERS (56-2627) (30-19-1,147) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought JEREMY CAMP (43-
4626) (19-9-0,100) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE. DAGA TERS was subdued by JEREMY CAMP in
a crowd pleasing 5 minute match. I used to know a guy named Jeremy, but he never
went camping.
WONDER BUBBLE (56-3522) (23-20-2,118) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought DARKNESS ABOVE
(65-4856) (24-16-0,117) of REIGNING DOOM. WONDER BUBBLE was vanquished by DARKNESS
ABOVE in a 2 minute mismatched fight. Oh! For a minute there, I thought it said
Wonder Bubble vanished, but I guess it just looked that way because of all the lights
going out. Um, they did, didn't they? I mean, it was raining, and sometimes that
makes the lights go out.
TWIG LITE ZONE (56-3537) (21-18-2,103) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought VELOXI (38-
4233) (18-10-0,121) of BLENDING ENTHRONED. TWIG LITE ZONE overcame VELOXI in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute match. I'm not getting this whole "blending" business. Unless
it's fruit juice in drinks, and then there should be an umbrella, too.
ALE'CHAI TALLSKY (35-4026) (30-6-0,178) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought DOOMSDAY
DEVICE (65-4854) (25-25-0,134) of REIGNING DOOM. ALE'CHAI TALLSKY overpowered
DOOMSDAY DEVICE in an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. This is good, I'm not ready
for doomsday yet.
SHEN (65-4973) (25-14-0,156) of BATTLE SCHOOL fought SEKHAT (7-2251) (33-48-
2,130) of CASTAWAYS. SHEN overpowered SEKHAT in a 1 minute one-sided match. So
there! Twigs in your eye, Sekhat! (That's a toast.) (Whole wheat, with strawberry
jam.)
SISSY CHRISSY (29-1347) (36-30-3,178) of STREET WALKERS fought CEDAR (29-4319)
(32-44-2,139) of CARDOW HUNTERS. SISSY CHRISSY was overpowered by CEDAR in an action
packed 1 minute uneven fight. This is one that Olaf made a note about, either
because Sissy lost a lot of points, or Cedar found them, or maybe both.
ALDALDON (56-3913) (31-21-1,197) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought FREDERICK DOUGLASS
(5-4424) (23-9-1,174) of I'M HISTORY. ALDALDON overpowered FREDERICK DOUGLASS in an
exciting 1 minute uneven competition. And Freddy really is history. I found him in
the encyclopedia. He was pressed between two pages like a flower.
POINT (56-633) (42-52-1,206) of INCONSISTENT FURY fought ALIX (74-2701) (33-23-
0,208) of CHEYSULI & LIR. POINT was overcome by ALIX in an action packed 3 minute
bout. Um, okay. What can I say about guys with names like that? Who knows what
they're really like, you know? Not a clue.
NYZEIL OGLATA (17-6753) (33-24-1,181) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (159-125-0,202) of DARKLINGS. NYZEIL OGLATA was vanquished by NIGHTCAP in a 1
minute uneven bout. And Nyzeil got lucky, because Nightcap was just looking for a
chance to get a kill, I could tell.
FLAMING FLEA (70-499) (33-32-2,199) of MIDNIGHT HOUR fought JOHN TYLER (5-4420)
(34-8-0,170) of I'M HISTORY. FLAMING FLEA was viciously subdued by JOHN TYLER in a
popular 9 minute brutal fight. Nine minutes! Getting better--a really long fight,
you know, has at least two digits, and this one was almost there.
CORNELIUS (31-3485) (38-8-1,181) of CAESAR'S POOL HALL fought DRIZZT (40-4146)
(33-42-0,180) of PHILANTHROPISTS. CORNELIUS was vanquished by DRIZZT in a 1 minute
one-sided match. Oh, for a minute there, I thought the announcer was saying
"drizzle," which we've got a lot of right now.
GOLEM (35-1485) (85-56-1,208) of THE PHILANTHROPISTS fought CXYAN (77-2553) (22-
14-0,164) of LEGIONS. GOLEM defeated CXYAN in a 2 minute fight. What, is there an
award for using up unwatned letters?
MIMOSA (32-4294) (35-24-1,198) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought *LEATHER* (65-3336)
(34-29-3,187) of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES. MIMOSA handily defeated *LEATHER* in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided contest. But it was philanthropic.
HIMEY THE PIMP (29-730) (48-36-1,200) of STREET WALKERS fought DESERT GYPSY (56-
2105) (36-21-3,202) of INCONSISTENT FURY. HIMEY THE PIMP was savagely defeated by
DESERT GYPSY in an action packed 7 minute bout. Well, you know how it is, deserts
make you tough. So do some kinds of desserts.
GOSSAMER (35-3656) (58-44-1,243) of PHILANTHROPISTS 2 fought NORMANDY (65-4916)
(27-28-3,195) of DOOMSDAY4DOOMCORPS. GOSSAMER was viciously subdued by NORMANDY in a
popular 6 minute gruesome bout. Why? I mean, where did the "vicious" part come
from? Is there something between these two?
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (120-143-0,256) of THE DRAGON FIST fought HATHU (103-
32) (5-1-0,250) of the College of Mimes. CORT NIGHTJEWEL overpowered HATHU in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched fight. And there's the last standby out of the
way, I'm glad of that.
RAORK ROKIOS (70-1526) (38-21-0,217) of ORKOGRE CASTLE fought NATAS (11-6531)
(42-26-0,206) of DO IT AGAIN. RAORK ROKIOS savagely defeated NATAS in an exciting 4
minute brutal match. Is there too much savagery around here? Do we need to call in
Emma LePost to remind us of our manners?
ENLIGHTENED BEING (26-4642) (39-20-0,216) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought SMUG BUG
(55-2900) (90-162-0,196) of RHYME TYME. ENLIGHTENED BEING was viciously subdued by
SMUG BUG in a 1 minute brawl. Aaaaah! That darned Bug.
The challenge fights:

(29-4984) (24-22-6,100) of STREET WALKERS. Up 26. QUINTUS bested MAD DOG MONTANA in
an action packed 1 minute brutal Challenge duel. And Montana's really MAD now!
TYI VELWIC (56-2609) (20-34-0,80) of INCONSISTENT FURY challenged FALLING ROCK
(29-4286) (35-57-0,85) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 5. TYI VELWIC was handily defeated by
FALLING ROCK in a 1 minute Challenge conflict. Never stand in the way of gravity,
Tyi. There's no beating it.
MOSSIE ROCKTROLL (56-3549) (20-18-1,100) of INCONSISTENT FURY challenged TALL
TREE (29-4380) (26-80-0,132) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Up 32. MOSSIE ROCKTROLL was
