"Zombies are invading Arvat? That's brilliant!" Manager exclaimed as he talked
to Marmaduke and Reaper.
"What do you mean? It sounds like a serious situation." replied Reaper.
"Oh please," Manager scoffed, "It's either a plot by the Free Blade team to make
us complacent--or the Delarquan or Crysalis teams are behind the Zombies. I can't
believe I didn't think of the ol' Zombie infestation trick!"
"Do you really think that another team could be behind the Zombies?" asked
Marmaduke, appalled.
"Of course!" said Manager, "You guys are new, but you need to always be aware
this kind of stuff is going on! You think it's coincidence that all of the Home
Guard guys avoided most of the loaded part of the bracket? Or that the top Delarquan
warriors are set on opposing ends? The commission guys who set the match ups are
making a fortune with all of the bribes!"
Suddenly A-Sop walked over to the threesome holding a bag of goodies. "Muffin?"
she asked sweetly. "The Muffin Man baked these himself."
"I'll have one." said Marmaduke, as he grabbed a chocolate muffin from the
basket.
Manager quickly slapped the muffin out of his hand as A-Sop walked away. "What
are you doing?!?!" he exclaimed.
"Um--eating a muffin." replied the Marmaduke, confused.
Manager pointed to the growing line of managers waiting to use the restroom.
"Those things are laced with laxatives." he whispered.
"No!" gasped Reaper in shock.
"I need you two to keep a close eye on Kellumbo," said Manager, "He's still got
two warriors left in the competition. There's no telling what the other teams could
be up to!"
"What about you?" asked Marmaduke.
"What do you mean? replied Manager.
"If all of the other regions are plotting against each other, surely you're
doing something too!"
"I can't believe you think I would do such a thing!" Manager feigned hurt
feelings, "Everyone knows Andorak's warriors are the best! I would never resort to
such tactics!" He then looked around and whispered, "But just make sure you guys
aren't sitting in sections, C or E!"
The bell signalling that the third round of fights sounded and the managers
hurriedly moved to their seats.
Bloodbath and Death Fog were up first in one of the most anticipated fights of the
round. Bloodbath had knocked off two top contenders in Reddi Whip and Dallas.
Meanwhile, Death Fog had cruised to easy wins over 3 Fisted Rat Boy and Boarish
Yeltsin. Many bookies felt that these were the best two warriors on their
respective teams. In a tough two-minute battle, it was Death Fog who was the first
warrior to advance to the quarter-finals
In another anticipated battle, Cooler and Jackson were up next. Both had scored
upsets in previous rounds. Cooler had defeated perennial TVer Hari Kari in the
first round and Jackson had knocked off a former ADM runner-up in He Hate Me in the
second round. In yet another lopsided victory, Cooler crushed Jackson.
Another impressive Slasher, Snotman, was up next. Natas, Dark One's Lunger that had
knocked off two Wastes was his opponent. In the end, it was Natas who advanced,
sending the worried Home Guard team down to their last warrior.
In an eagerly anticipated match-up, it was Defiance vs. Harv. Both powerhouses Aimed
Blows were thought to anchor their teams and both managers hoped this battle wouldn't
occur until later in the tournament. After a lot of dodging, it was Harv who was
triumphant, there were now no managers who still had two warriors left in the
tourney.
The two underdogs (Gossamer vs. Baron Stonewall) were up next. Both went into the
tourney as long shots, but the winner of this fight would only be three wins away
from a regional tourney title. It was Gossamer's Cinderella run that continued as he
handily defeated the Baron. The loss eliminated the team Crysalis from the
competition.
Two other defensives, Nightcap and Vision were up next. While Free Blades and
Andorak were both assured of going to the next round, both wanted to counter the two
Delarquan warriors who had already advanced. After a tightly contested battle, it
was Vision, the last Total Parry in the competition, who advanced.
Also fighting for survival was the Home Guard team, which was down to its last
warrior in Shewish Whaler. The Delarquan powerhouse, Littlest Tyrant was his
opponent. In unsurprising fashion, it was The Muffin Man's Tyrant who won.
So, going into the quarterfinals, there were 3 regions left in the contest. The
scoreboard read:
Scoreboard:
------------------
Darkholm: 10-4 (71.4)
Free Blades: 12-10 (54.5)
Andorak: 12-10 (54.5)
Home Guard: 7-10 (41.1)
Crysalis: 7-13 (35.0)
Warriors Left: Delarqs-3, Andorians-2, Free Blades-2
Managers with a warrior left: Jolly, Manager, The Dark One, TUM, Aragorn, Det.

Just as Agony began moving forward to assassinate the Duke, a piercing scream
shattered the festivities at the Ducal Ball. From the front hall of the manor,
shouts rang out, followed by the sounds of fighting. An instant later a wave of
rotting corpses lumbered into the ballroom, eagerly seizing guests and servants alike
and ripping them into edible pieces.
At the same moment, the kitchen doors flew open, slamming against the side walls
of the hallway despite the mechanism meant to halt their progress. Defiance, armed
with El Cid, charged into the ballroom.
"Assassin! Assassin!" Defiance shouted. "Sugar! Get the Duke to safety!"
Tortured Trout, Levi A. Thon and D. Moe Gorgon moved to intercept the zombie
hoard, leaving Defiance to stop Agony and the Sword of the Underworld.
Arenamistress Sugar, upon hearing the shouted warning, spun and suddenly a
dagger appeared in her hand. She grabbed the Duke with her other hand and pulled him
down a side corridor.
Agony took one step towards the Duke and then the sword began speaking to him.
"No, fool, it is no use now. The weakling Duke will have to await another day. We
must escape."
Agony sensed fear in the blade's mental sending. It was definitely not
confident of victory here. But why? Then he noticed the glowing sword in Defiance's
hands. It was very much the same as his own. That must be what the sword feared.
Defiance moved through the retreating crowd, keeping his eye on Agony and the
Blade of the Underworld. He wasn't sure why one of his former guildmates was
wielding the cursed weapon, and even less sure why Agony would be trying to kill the
Duke.
El Cid spoke suddenly in Defiance's mind. "The Sword of the Underworld does not
ally itself with humans. Your friend is but a pawn to it. It is controlling his
every action. Unfortunately we may have to kill him to stop it."
Defiance frowned as he moved a gowned matron aside to continue his advance. He
wasn't particularly enthusiastic about killing Agony. They were not close friends,
but he had helped Agony train and they were more than acquaintances. There had to be
another way to stop him.
At that, Agony turned and ran, back into the pantries of the manor, seeking the
hidden stairs and the long descent back through the cellars. The Sword of the
Underworld seethed. It had been thwarted, once again, by its brother blade. The
plan was so perfect. The Duke should be dead! It had happened before. Many times.
Somehow every time it forged a plan to destroy the balance and shift the world into
darkness, the other sword always discovered the plot and interfered. Then it would
have to flee, bide its time until another plan could be created. Enough! This was
enough! For once it would turn and fight!
Defiance raced down the spiral staircase in pursuit of Agony and the cursed
sword. Urged on by El Cid, he leaped the banister near the bottom and bolted along
after the tracks in the dusty cellar.
He only had a moment's warning to throw himself flat when the Sword of the
Underworld whistled out of the darkness, just missing shearing off the top of
Defiance's head. He rolled to his feet and lunged into the attack.
A fierce flurry of feints, attacks and parries followed as both gladiators moved
too fast to be seen by mortal eye. Sparks showered from the blades as they met again
and again in the deadly dance.
Across the cellar the battle flowed with each combatant seeking to gain an
advantage, using the old furniture as a barrier to interfere with their opponent's
range of motion.
Defiance, judging the battle dispassionately from his perspective, felt that
they were too evenly matched for the fight to be won easily or quickly. With the
swords enhancing the gladiator's already honed skills, they might fight on and on for
hours.
Agony, trapped within the iron grip of the will of the Sword of the Underworld,
had come to much the same conclusion. But then he realized that the Sword was so
occupied on the battle, its hold over him was slipping a little. At least he could
think independently now, even if he couldn't do anything about it. Or perhaps he
could.
As the next lightning blow arced towards him, Agony focused all his strength and
tried to will himself to alter the parry. For an instant it appeared that his effort
was insufficient, as the swords met with a clang, but then El Cid slipped around the
parry and buried itself to the hilt in Agony's chest.
Slipping into darkness, he threw a defiant thought at the Blade of the
Underworld. 'I am no pawn, sword. And you have lost!' Blackness enveloped him.

Isle of the Eye -- Free Blades Headquarters:
Defiance returned El Cid to the new Lord Marshall of Free Blades. He had kept
the sword longer than he should have, having lost his title several turns back.
There would be some penalty for that, but it was necessary.
In the end, once he had won the fight with Agony he had consulted with El Cid on
how to destroy the Blade of the Underworld, and determined that there really wasn't
any way to unmake the sword permanently. Instead they had taken it and sealed it
within a great block of crystal, forever to rest as an exhibit in the Hall of
Trophies on the Isle of the Eye. No one could touch the sword and, therefore, it
would be unable to work its mischief. Defiance was less than satisfied with this
resolution, but swords made by gods were beyond him. It would have to do.
Arvat -- Devil Advocates Guildhouse:
Agony awoke with a groan.
His teammates and Tortured Trout, the old gladiator-turned-wizard who was the
Dark One's apprentice, stood around his bed looking down at him.
"I'm alive?" He was shocked. "Neat trick, that."
Lou C. Firr wouldn't meet his gaze. "Well, not exactly. You were pretty well
killed by the time Defiance brought you back here. And you're not immortal or
anything. And the magic to resurrect you is pretty rare. That's why they use it for
tournament prizes and stuff..."
Tortured Trout nodded. "What he's trying to say is that the best we could do is
to latch on to some of the magic that the Sword of the Underworld was using and bring
you back... as a zombie."
Agony considered that. "I don't feel like a zombie. I don't feel quite right,
but I'm not hankering for human flesh or anything."
"That's because you still have your soul. We got to you in time for that, at
least."
A zombie with a soul. Agony sat up. There were worse things to be, he
supposed. Like dead. Or being controlled by a cursed sword for the rest of your
days.
"Well, I'd better get up and start practicing. I'm still in the arena and
there's a title to win."
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
First off, I'm not a gazelle. For those of you who think everyone really is
what their warrior name says. I'm also not a golem, for those who believe what the
Arenamaster announces. I'm a Rocani, and proud of it.
Second, Claudius, what were you thinking? That you didn't want to be the one up
here writing a column and talking to reporters? Because you really, really shouldn't
have lost. Did you throw the fight? I mean, you guys, he came in with an 80-55-2
record, compared to my 70-83-0. And a more aggressive style than me. And I hit him
on the ARM, for pete's sake. And... well, then I hit him once more. But it wasn't
that much. And then he complimented me on a good fight, and walked out of the arena.
Talk about your anticlimaxes. I was all set for a rip-roaring fight.
So anyway, here I am. Come and get me, anyone who thinks they can! You know
you want to.
-- Lord Marshall Gazelle
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
I was going to cut the spy report short on account of the stuff from the
regional tourney, you know? And then I looked at the fight card. Like, wow! Where
did everybody go? Don't answer that, lots of them probably went to Primus, because
we had the split earlier this week. But there are only fourteen fights! This is
bad. Only twenty-seven active gladiators (and one standby), and next thing you know,
it's going to be echoing in here. I mean, look, guys, come back!
Fourteen fights, with one standby. Five challenges, none of them TV. Where did
all the tourney victors go? I know we had some! Lord Marshall Gazelle got the most
challenges, which is, like, proper, right? Inconsistent Fury was most avoided by
Roman Heroes. The longest fight was nine minutes, which is barely time for my nail
polish to dry.
Since there were so few fights, here are all of them:
MARCELLUS (32-5133) (19-3-0,70) of ROMAN HEROES fought BITTER ALMOND (103-41)
(14-16-4,50) of the College of Mimes. MARCELLUS was overpowered by BITTER ALMOND in
a 1 minute one-sided duel. Was Marcellus's face red, or what?
QUINTUS (17-6913) (19-13-3,100) of FIELDS OF ELYSIUM fought FALLING ROCK (29-
4286) (37-57-0,100) of CARDOW HUNTERS. QUINTUS was devastated by FALLING ROCK in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched bout. Kinda strange.
THE QUICKLING (70-1669) (91-214-3,160) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought CEDAR (29-4319)
(33-45-2,162) of CARDOW HUNTERS. THE QUICKLING bested CEDAR in an exciting 1 minute
battle. I was hoping we'd've got rid of The. Guess not.
CORT NIGHTJEWEL (78-196) (121-144-0,193) of THE DRAGON FIST fought DREAD (32-
4666) (27-15-0,179) of ANGELS OF PAIN. CORT NIGHTJEWEL was demolished by DREAD in a
crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched match. Same with Cort. Too bad, Primus NEEDS
him.
KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (107-150-4,204) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES fought SUPERIOR
FORCES (33-4543) (123-179-3,188) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY. KOOKABURRA was overpowered
by SUPERIOR FORCES in a popular 1 minute one-sided melee. Fossils everywhere.
GIMME SOME SUGAR (19-4936) (26-18-0,182) of ARMY OF DARKNESS fought SMUG BUG
(55-2900) (91-163-0,194) of RHYME TYME. GIMME SOME SUGAR unbelievably bested SMUG
BUG in a popular 2 minute gory duel. I believe it, and I'm GLAD.
DEFIANCE (32-4619) (43-14-1,205) of ANGELS OF PAIN fought ALDALDON (56-3913)
(32-22-1,196) of PHILANTHROPISTS. DEFIANCE vanquished ALDALDON in a 2 minute one-
sided duel. Just, you know, a fight.
BLACK WOLF (29-4194) (53-50-2,221) of CARDOW HUNTERS fought ARTEMIDORUS (17-
6864) (53-13-1,182) of FIELDS OF ELYSIUM. BLACK WOLF was overpowered by ARTEMIDORUS
in an action packed 1 minute uneven melee. Black Wolf sure goes up and down a lot.
NATAS (11-6531) (43-27-0,224) of DO IT AGAIN fought NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (161-125-
0,224) of DARKLINGS. NATAS was devastated by NIGHTCAP in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
mismatched match. It's probably something to do with Daylight Savings.
The challenges:
ANTONIUS (19-5063) (28-13-0,150) of IDES OF MARCH challenged TALL TREE (29-4380)
(27-81-0,108) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 42. ANTONIUS bested TALL TREE in a popular 1
minute Challenge duel. Sad.
GERMANICUS (17-6999) (23-9-1,112) of GLADIATORS challenged JEO THE SONGSMITH (1-
3260) (46-95-0,124) of BLUE EYRIE. Up 12. GERMANICUS defeated JEO THE SONGSMITH in
an exciting 4 minute bloody Challenge fight. No songs today.
CORNELIUS (31-3485) (39-9-1,172) of CAESAR'S POOL HALL challenged STONETOOTH
(29-4560) (34-68-0,142) of CARDOW HUNTERS. Down 30. CORNELIUS vanquished STONETOOTH
in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Yep.
LUCRETIUS (32-4687) (34-14-3,157) of ROMAN HEROES challenged SEKHAT (7-2251)
(33-50-2,131) of CASTAWAYS. Down 46. LUCRETIUS subdued SEKHAT in an exciting 3
minute gory Challenge melee. So this makes four challenges by Ceasar, and all of
them won. Does he know what he's doing, or what?
For the title:
JEANNE D'ARC (70-68) (34-27-0,211) of GORGEOUS GOBLINS challenged GAZELLE (56-
3701) (71-83-0,262) of REDHORSE. Up 51. JEANNE D'ARC outwaited GAZELLE in a crowd
pleasing 9 minute Challenge Title fight. The longest fight, and not bad.
Congratulations to Jeanne.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Claudius -- Wow. How did that happen? And in less than a minute! As a Total Parry,
I don't win that way very often. You must have been having a really off day. --
Gazelle
Lucretius -- I told you never to hit me there. Catfolk are not well-padded in that
region. -- Sekhat
Twig Lite Zone -- You... run around in the dark, naked but for sunglasses and fuzzy
slippers? Why yes. That IS an ouch waiting to happen. -- Sekhat
Twig Lite Zone -- How did that occur? According to the Arenamaster, I am the more
defensive warrior. By the seventh minute, I should have been pulling ahead.
Instead, you defeated ME... in the tenth minute! It is passing strange. -- Jeo the
Songsmith
Robin of Shew-Wood -- You fought well and lost properly (being a stand-in). --
