Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hello!
It's Nightcap again. Bet you're all getting tired of me. But I'll tell you one
thing for sure: This beats Primus!

Nightcap paused, his quill poised over the paper, and gazed abstractedly out the
window. The guildhouse was an older one, built in the days when the casinos still
flourished in Talahya. And it had a touch of that style, the big plate glass panes
with the carved walnut frames, stained almost black. He was looking out over the
sloping ground of the town, to the Lake of Mist.
There were no reptilian heads sticking up out of the water at the moment, but
those were not an uncommon sight. The Lake was infested.
He liked this place, even though the casinos and bars were mostly boarded up,
the beach was rocky, swimming was limited to a magically warded area, and boating was
very much not advised. Once, the huge population of gladiators had overwhelmed the
much smaller population of local fishermen, sheep herders, and their families. Now,
the smaller and less brash group of Lord Protectors that remained seemed to have made
more of an effort to be good neighbors and be part of the community. This very
afternoon, as the Lord Marshall, he was supposed to hammer the first nail as part of
a barn-raising celebration. There would be free food and all the lemonade he could
drink. It was an honor. He hoped it would be a very good barn.
With a smile, he turned his attention to the quill and paper again.

My fight with Kookaburra was a random match. Kookaburra is a golem with no sex
at all. It doesn't look like a cookie, really. It looks like... well, a big-
shouldered sculpture. Humanoid certainly, the color of clay, and wearing a simple
homespun tunic under its fighting accoutrements. It was not suited to fight my style
(I am a Parry-Lunger). I felt rather sorry for it.
I should wrap this up, as I have an important appointment. So, chat with you in
two weeks-- or sooner, if you go to barn raising and such.

Here we are, and we are here. About... forty-four gladiators, me, the
arenamaster and stewards and orderlies (very disorderlie, those guys), bookies, and
even a few managers. All here.
Lord Fireflash had the biggest point increase: 38.
Wooden Arrow, not having a winning streak today, had the biggest drop: 28.
Half the old women in the area feel that they can fight better than the active
gladiators here, and they might be right, because they're retired from Primus.
Lurocians II was most avoided, and On the Rocks most avoided them.
Gazelle got the most challenges.
There were twenty-three fights, with two standbys and six challenges.
So, some fights, well, all today's fights....
BRAVO (96-3034) (11-11-3,85) of PHONETIX fought KING COREY (43-4620) (24-17-
1,70) of LUROCIAN ROYALTY. BRAVO murdered KING COREY in a 1 minute one-sided melee.
Well! Murder is a serious charge. Not something to do lightly, you know. What was
behind this? I've HEARD that it was a woman, but nobody actually KNOWS.
MAKADOS (29-4704) (23-11-0,95) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought JEO THE SONGSMITH (1-
3260) (59-129-0,99) of BLUE EYRIE. MAKADOS was savagely defeated by JEO THE
SONGSMITH in a popular 9 minute gory duel. Battered about the head and shoulders by
the wings, I bet.
FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (23-12-1,147) of LUROCIANS XI fought MAREI (103-37) (38-
32-2,150) of the College of Mimes. FLESH RIPPER overpowered MAREI in an exciting 1
minute uneven fight. You'd better avoid Marei for the next few days, Flesh, because
she's mad enough to do some murdering of her own.
MOSSROCK (15-4871) (40-40-2,159) of GREENWARDENS fought CONTROVERSY (64-3914)
(42-48-1,172) of UNDER DURESS. MOSSROCK slimly won victory over CONTROVERSY in a
popular 3 minute brutal contest. The winning streak continues!
WOODEN ARROW (15-4619) (32-33-0,168) of GREENWARDENS fought SLEEPWALKER (74-
2843) (52-110-1,132) of DARKLINGS. WOODEN ARROW was overpowered by SLEEPWALKER in a
1 minute uneven fray. Silly! Next time you see an opponent who looks like he's
asleep, DON'T BELIEVE IT, you dummy.
UNFORGETTABLE (78-2306) (19-4-3,173) of THE WILLBURYS 78 fought THE QUICKLING
(70-1669) (103-249-3,176) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. UNFORGETTABLE overpowered THE
QUICKLING in an exciting 1 minute uneven fight. Always a pleasure to see. The days
when Quickling had the approval of the fans are long past. YEARS past.
MARTIN BLANK (82-28434) (32-8-0,203) of BLOOD TITANS fought KRYSTAL MEYERS (43-
4635) (32-15-0,171) of POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE. MARTIN BLANK overpowered KRYSTAL MEYERS
in a crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched fight. So much for Krystal's winning streak.
SANDMAN (74-2896) (56-90-3,191) of DARKLINGS fought HELYSE (103-36) (45-35-
5,165) of the College of Mimes. SANDMAN was overpowered by HELYSE in an exciting 1
minute one-sided match. And Helyse is swaggering around like anything, really
ladying it over Marei.
DANISH (74-2451) (79-34-0,201) of THE ALPHABET fought REM (74-2853) (89-69-
0,189) of DARKLINGS. DANISH slimly won victory over REM in a popular 3 minute brawl.
Is there a Danish alphabet? Letters made of blonde wood, maybe?
ALDALDON (56-3913) (36-28-1,207) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought S. MARY ROSE (78-
2313) (60-74-1,151) of HABIT. ALDALDON vanquished S. MARY ROSE in a crowd pleasing 1
minute one-sided fray. The right side, or the left side?
SMUG BUG (55-2900) (111-190-0,183) of RHYME TYME fought SAVORY (32-4143) (34-29-
1,152) of DEAD WE SUCK. SMUG BUG vanquished SAVORY in a 1 minute mismatched bout.
That darned Bug! I wish he'd go to Primus.
SEKHAT (7-2251) (46-84-2,186) of CASTAWAYS fought REDTHORN (15-4943) (31-28-
0,169) of GREENWARDENS. SEKHAT handily defeated REDTHORN in a 1 minute one-sided
conflict. Isn't that just LIKE an Andorian, to use his superior ranking to defeat
humble Free Blades?
GIMME SOME SUGAR (19-4936) (51-39-0,203) of ARMY OF DARKNESS fought ARGUMENT
(64-3915) (39-51-0,195) of UNDER DURESS. GIMME SOME SUGAR was demolished by ARGUMENT
in a popular 1 minute mismatched match. I've seen that happen lots of times.
LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (50-51-0,192) of LUROCIANS II fought MACHINE (56-3795)
(36-35-0,157) of DIRTIE. LORD FIREFLASH butchered MACHINE in a 1 minute mismatched
conflict. This is just weird. How do you butcher a machine? Take it all apart and
throw away some of the pieces? That's probably littering.
SUPERIOR FORCES (33-4543) (162-187-3,300) of DUPLICATE REDUNDANCY fought STUMP
(15-4882) (31-58-0,182) of GREENWARDENS. SUPERIOR FORCES handily defeated STUMP in
an exciting 2 minute brutal one-sided bout. Hmm, I guess this isn't Stump's day to
work on his winning streak.
JOHN TYLER (5-4420) (47-14-0,216) of I'M HISTORY fought RED BARON (33-1092) (59-
56-3,194) of LUROCIANS II. JOHN TYLER unbelievably bested RED BARON in a popular 5
minute brutal fight. I don't know why, but somebody said that John went, "ack ack,"
and that's why he won. Beats me!

(29-33-0,121) of GREENWARDENS. Up 16. REPUGNANT overpowered TREEFROG in a 1 minute
one-sided Challenge struggle. I find frogs often repugnant, when they're slimy
because I don't like slime, not even gumbo, but toads more repugnant because they're
ickier.
GARY M. REAPER (32-2502) (67-37-1,193) of DEVIL ADVOCATES challenged SERGE (32-
3549) (44-43-0,195) of ASSORTED. Up 2. GARY M. REAPER demolished SERGE in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge competition. So, does this mean Serge has been reaped?
Or that he's going gary. Um, gray.
SCAPA (35-4198) (26-8-1,198) of ON THE ROCKS challenged PHIL PHILANTHROPIST (20-
3330) (31-58-2,201) of PHILANTHROPISTS. Up 3. SCAPA was devastated by PHIL
PHILANTHROPIST in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. Don't ask me whether this
was philanthropy, I don't understand that stuff.

BILBO BAGGINNI (9-5508) (36-16-0,219) of MIDDLE ITALY challenged GAZELLE (56-
3701) (99-102-0,256) of REDHORSE. Up 37. BILBO BAGGINNI was bested by GAZELLE in a
crowd pleasing 4 minute Challenge fight. I bet the fight difference isn't QUITE as
much as it looks like. Hidden tourney fights, you know.
