THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Hello again! This time around, I was challenged by Phil Philanthropist. There
wasn't much to it. He's a sturdy fellow-- I had to hit him three times, using three
of my best moves-- but the style match was against him, in addition to which he just
had SO much less experience than me. Ninety fights, to my 334. As I told him, it
was a really, really brave challenge. And it does take courage, you know. You'll
get brought back if you die, but that doesn't mean it isn't horrible.
Even while he was hurting a lot, he asked me to teach him one of my moves. It
was the one where I whip my epee back and forth as if to slash my foe to ribbons.
Maybe you noticed it, if you saw our fight. So I met with him afterwards and taught
it to him. It's a feint, actually. Gets the person expecting a horizontal slash,
and then you thrust instead. Not a really powerful thrust because there's no lunge
behind it, but it's quick and unexpected and can get past a good defense.
Fashion, ah. Since I've been Lord Marshall for several weeks now, I've saved up
my extra pay and I finally took it to a couturier. Actually I don't like to wear my
best stuff in the arena, where it'll get slashed up and bloodstained, but I did wear
a new kichai this time. That's a kind of coat, for those non-Adantri among you.
It's turquoise quilted silk, because I like turquoise, and it has some subtle
emboidery that looks like clusters of brightly colored dots, but if you look closely
they're schools of fish. It reminds me of the fish pond where I went to school.
Hasn't got anything to do with fighting or the arena, you understand. I just like to
wear it. It's kind of my lucky jacket. I might lose a fight in it, but at least
I'll look good.
The only Challenger Champ who approaches my level of experience is Kookaburra,
and since he's Top Basher... well, he might do okay. I'm a Parry-Lunger, and I've
been a told that a parry-anything is somewhat vulnerable to bashers. If we fight,
we'll just have to see, won't we?
Anyway, I didn't have much to say, and that was it. Till another two weeks have
passed, fare well.
Lord Marshall Nightcap
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Well, what are you looking at, FREE BLADES? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed
to see SUPERIOR FORCES win a fight and gain 80 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, JEO THE
SONGSMITH beat MOSSROCK and MOSSROCK lost 26 points. You're breakin' my heart. And
if variety is the spice of life, FREE BLADES may be getting bland, as NIGHTCAP stays
top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you
think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. FREE
BLADES, I am losing what little hope I had in you. DARKLINGS the most avoided team?
What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like ARMY OF DARKNESS avoided
them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph.
SEKHAT was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to GARY M. REAPER
of DEVIL ADVOCATES for challenging up by 19 to GOLEM. GARY M. REAPER lost to get 202
points of recognition. And we have GIMME SOME SUGAR in a challenge, going down 10
points for the fight. Guess what? I thought GIMME SOME SUGAR showed great skill and
promise when he won victory over SERGE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. We're all going to die in the end, so why
worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in FREE BLADES to get a drink than The Cooler!
Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So
nyaaah! Glad to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Due to circumstances that took me completely by surprise, I won't be able to do
a spy report for you today. I know it's, like, totally awful, but there it is.
-- Debby T.
Krystal Meyers -- I don't call that a positive alternative. -- Whitebraid
Sleepwalker -- Better to be awake, even if you're a mossy rock like me. -- Mossrock
P.S. Not that I'm REALLY a mossy rock, at least, I don't THINK I am. And since I
can think, that PROVES I'm not, doesn't it?
Rem -- What's with you guys, fighting us? Take your tricky eye movements away. They
make my head ache. -- Redthorn
Red Baron -- Ah! Pizza! -- Stump
Makados -- Very slim, after all, it took you three minutes to pull it off. --
Treefrog
Repugnant -- You ARE. -- Wooden Arrow
Sleepwalker -- No, I was just in a hurry to go back to bed. -- Wooden Arrow
Phil Philanthropist -- That was a really, really brave challenge. You might want to
beef up a lot more before you challenge me again, though. -- Nightcap
Golem -- Hey! I really like long fights. Why don't more people do those? I bow to
the superior scum though. Can't remember staggering so much in any fight. Thanks
for the challenge. -- Gazelle
Danish -- Ow. You hit me on the nipple. My people (catfolk) have six, you know,
though they're hidden in the fur. Anyway... good fighting. Hope I don't get matched
against you again. (ow) -- Sekhat
Redthorn -- Hmph. Useful fight for you, not so much for me. Glad I could show you
some stuff though. -- Rem
Savory -- Your team name, "Dead We Suck." What does it mean? That you don't fight
well after you're dead? Or is that too obvious? Anyway, I'd say you fight pretty
well when you're alive. -- Sandman
Mossrock -- I hit you on the nipple AND the groin, and you still kept going and
scummed me. My hat's off to your fortitude. -- Sleepwalker
Machine -- Ah-HAH! I won! And after falling down and getting my weapon broken, too.
I am quite dangerous, am I not? -- Jeo the Songsmith

WINTER FACE-TO-FACE IN SUNNY ARIZONA!
Our next winter FTF will be held in Tempe, Arizona, January 13-15, 2012. It will be
held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Tempe, Arizona (480-894-7444), the same hotel as
last year by popular request. Room rates are $134.00 per night, 1-2 occupancy, which
includes full cooked breakfast, complimentary manager's reception, free airport
shuttle, free parking and free high speed internet. There's a fitness center,
jacuzzi, and pool. The rooms are blocked--please make your reservation by December 15
before the block is released! (This is prime season for Phoenix, and people have been
unable to book rooms because they waited too long.) Look for the tournament info
sheet and minioverviews some time in December. We hope you're all looking forward to
it and that we will see you there!
