THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
I've been here before, and here I am again. I like it.
I've been here before, and here I am again. I like it.
Superior (that name is not a joke) Forces
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Wow, Superior Forces (the gladiator) has been sucked off to Primus! I thought I
heard a lot of kicking and screaming a few days ago, but I didn't realize what it
meant. I wonder who else has gone?
Well, anyway, the clerks handed me some spy report stuff, mostly pretty boring
because they never have figured out how to write anything fun. But you might like to
know some of it, so: Jeo the Songsmith rose the farthest, 29 points. Not because of
his wings, he has to keep those closed up in the arena. S. Mary Rose dropped
fartherest, 23 points.
Darklings was most avoided, with Army of Darkness doing most of the avoiding.
Kookaburra (not gone to Primus, I guess) got the most challenges.
We had seventeen fights, with only two standbys. This is GOOD, which I never
thought I'd say about seventeen fights, but there its. Six challenges.
KING COREY (43-4620) (26-21-1,74) of LUROCIAN ROYALTY fought ROSELLA (103-39)
(26-25-0,100) of the College of Mimes. KING COREY was bested by ROSELLA in a 2
minute fight. Well, you know, I should hope so!
SANDMAN (74-2896) (59-93-3,141) of DARKLINGS fought XHUGHA KARGARIT (103-38)
(32-28-1,130) of the College of Mimes. SANDMAN vanquished XHUGHA KARGARIT in a crowd
pleasing 3 minute bloody one-sided fray. Sometimes "vanquished" means "removed in a
plain van." I bet you didn't know that.
WHITEBRAID (15-2110) (38-66-1,162) of GREENWARDENS fought MACHINE (56-3795) (39-
38-0,141) of DIRTIE. WHITEBRAID won victory over MACHINE in a crowd pleasing 1
minute bout. Gosh, who knew Whitebraid could do this?
SLEEPWALKER (74-2843) (57-111-1,173) of DARKLINGS fought TREEFROG (15-4177) (30-
38-0,101) of GREENWARDENS. SLEEPWALKER overpowered TREEFROG in a popular 1 minute
mismatched conflict. You know what happens to a tree frog who falls asleep? He
falls out of his tree! Uneven fights will do that.
REM (74-2853) (92-72-0,180) of DARKLINGS fought MOSSROCK (15-4871) (42-44-2,144)
of GREENWARDENS. REM viciously subdued MOSSROCK in an exciting 2 minute bloody
battle. The spy reporter stuff the clerks put together should include something like
"team with the most uneven matches." I suppose they don't want to take the time to
figure it out.
S. MARY ROSE (78-2313) (63-77-2,195) of HABIT fought JEO THE SONGSMITH (1-3260)
(63-131-0,164) of BLUE EYRIE. S. MARY ROSE was overpowered by JEO THE SONGSMITH in a
3 minute one-sided match. This was the biggest upset fight. Probably really
upsetting. And the Jeo will crow about it next time, if he thinks of writing
personals at all.
SEKHAT (7-2251) (49-87-2,191) of CASTAWAYS fought MARTIN BLANK (82-28434) (36-
10-0,196) of BLOOD TITANS. SEKHAT was overcome by MARTIN BLANK in a 2 minute bout.
Do you suppose Martin's longer id number gives him an edge?
CONTROVERSY (64-3914) (45-51-1,187) of UNDER DURESS fought SAVORY (32-4143) (36-
33-1,157) of DEAD WE SUCK. CONTROVERSY overpowered SAVORY in a 1 minute one-sided
fight. It's always like that, most times.
RED BARON (33-1092) (61-60-3,206) of LUROCIANS II fought ARGUMENT (64-3915) (41-
55-0,199) of UNDER DURESS. RED BARON was viciously subdued by ARGUMENT in an action
packed 2 minute fight. No argument like a sword! At least, that's what Olaf says.
SMUG BUG (55-2900) (117-190-0,263) of RHYME TYME fought NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (207-
132-0,223) of DARKLINGS. SMUG BUG lost to NIGHTCAP in an action packed 2 minute
duel. Darn, both of these guys still here! I wouldn't have been surprised if Primus
got 'em. Well, maybe next time.
The challenges:
OBAN (35-4213) (19-9-1,104) of ON THE ROCKS challenged WOODEN ARROW (15-4619)
(32-39-0,127) of GREENWARDENS. Up 23. OBAN was overpowered by WOODEN ARROW in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge struggle. That surprised a lot of the bookies, so watch
out when you leave the arena today. Surprised bookies usually means trouble.
GARY M. REAPER (32-2502) (68-42-1,177) of DEVIL ADVOCATES challenged REDTHORN
(15-4943) (32-33-0,171) of GREENWARDENS. Down 6. GARY M. REAPER devastated REDTHORN
in a 2 minute uneven Challenge brawl. Not a surprise.
FEEL THE BUZZ (35-2490) (31-17-1,187) of ON THE ROCKS challenged KOOKABURRA (33-
4151) (133-177-5,198) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES. Up 11. FEEL THE BUZZ was overpowered
by KOOKABURRA in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Darn, Kooky's still here,
too. Well, I guess we can't lose the fossils all at once.
BILBO BAGGINNI (9-5508) (39-19-0,209) of MIDDLE ITALY challenged SERGE (32-3549)
(45-48-0,212) of ASSORTED. Up 3. BILBO BAGGINNI was vanquished by SERGE in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Another surprising win! I mean, you can see that
Serge is working on a LOSING record, right?
SCAPA (35-4198) (27-11-1,194) of ON THE ROCKS challenged LORD FIREFLASH (33-
2966) (54-53-1,198) of LUROCIANS II. Up 4. SCAPA was demolished by LORD FIREFLASH
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Not so close as you might think, but I hope
Scapa learned a lot?
GIMME SOME SUGAR (19-4936) (55-41-0,206) of ARMY OF DARKNESS challenged STUMP
(15-4882) (32-63-0,200) of GREENWARDENS. Down 6. GIMME SOME SUGAR devastated STUMP
in a 2 minute gruesome mismatched Challenge fight. This is the kind of stuff
(losing) that Stump is good at.
For the title:
GAZELLE (56-3701) (103-104-0,217) of REDHORSE fought FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (29-
12-1,231) of LUROCIANS XI. GAZELLE devastated FLESH RIPPER in a 1 minute one-sided
Title competition. I bet Gazelle complains about writing a column, but I will, you
know, nag. The Lord Marshall should write. Or get someone to write for him.

BLOODGAMES at the WINTER FACE-TO-FACE
Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Winter FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:
DM 96: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and
DM 97: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker
before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited.
The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even
at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 96, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds.
For DM 97, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair
for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by Wednesday, January 11, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at
the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving
gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any
special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters
combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that
this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will
survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D.
That warrior could be yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
