THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Lord-Marshall
Of all the-- I'm still here? Gimme Some Sugar, I've got to say it was a bold
challenge, and credit to you that you made it a close fight.
Anyway, here I am, with space to fill. I'm a member of the Redhorse team, you
know. From Rocanis, or thereabouts. I was in the caravan business, but am retired
from that now. I'd like to point out that one of my teammates, Crooked Hoof, was
mentioned in a book that was written about a battle we had back home a few years ago.
Let me tell you, CH is really strutting. Even though he only had a tiny one-line
cameo. And I'd like to mention that, as the author of "Dark Arena" emphasized
several times, the Rocani tribesmen no longer raid caravans. That's long, long past.
Long, long, long past. Really. I wouldn't even know how to go about, you know, the
old psych-out bit with the war whoops and hairsbreadth "misses" with arrows in order
to intimidate the guards and minimize loss of life. Maybe my great-great grand-pappy
was around when some Rocani did stuff like that, but it's a mystery to me. Anyway
it's a good book.
My teammate Royland, who is retired at the moment, was actually a caravan guard.
That's how law-abiding we can be.
Well... I was challenged by Gimme Some Sugar, a dwarf, and male, according to
the announcer. It can be a little hard to tell. He fought pretty well, too. I
didn't start dominating until the third minute. It was a good fight. Sugar's got
some moves.
And that's all I have to say. See ya!
Gazelle
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
So, like, here we are again. Depending on how you count it, this is the last
fight day of the year, or the first of the next year. Either way, there it is.
Fight day.
Wooden Arrow went up the most, twenty-four points. Mossrock went down the most,
twenty-six points. They both fought standbys.
Lurocians II was (were?) most avoided. Devil Advocates did most of that
avoiding. No surprise. They (the Dark One's warriors) did all the challenging, too.
I *think* Jeo the Songsmith got more challenges than anybody.
Sixteen fights, three standbys, three challenges. Well, it's better than
Andorak. Or Home Guard.
KING COREY (43-4620) (27-22-1,81) of LUROCIAN ROYALTY fought BITTER ALMOND (103-
41) (14-16-4,50) of the College of Mimes. KING COREY overpowered BITTER ALMOND in a
1 minute one-sided bout. Easy peasy. Which is a dish of mashed peas, which *I*
never found easy. I don't like 'em that way.
WOODEN ARROW (15-4619) (33-40-0,130) of GREENWARDENS fought MAREI (103-37) (38-
32-2,150) of the College of Mimes. WOODEN ARROW overpowered MAREI in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute mismatched brawl. Well, good.
MOSSROCK (15-4871) (42-46-2,150) of GREENWARDENS fought ROSELLA (103-39) (26-25-
0,100) of the College of Mimes. MOSSROCK was defeated by ROSELLA in an action packed
5 minute gruesome struggle. This must be, like, totally embarrassing.
WHITEBRAID (15-2110) (40-66-1,166) of GREENWARDENS fought MACHINE (56-3795) (39-
40-0,142) of DIRTIE. WHITEBRAID was handily defeated by MACHINE in a 1 minute one-
sided conflict. It's the white hair thing. It really shows the dirt, you know?
SANDMAN (74-2896) (61-93-3,160) of DARKLINGS fought SAVORY (32-4143) (36-35-
1,160) of DEAD WE SUCK. SANDMAN demolished SAVORY in a popular 1 minute mismatched
match. I heard someone say that a savory is like sardines or something. Or
anchovies. Bleh. Too oily. Well, the sardines are too oily, and the anchovies just
don't go with the rest of the stuff on an "everything" pizza.
S. MARY ROSE (78-2313) (64-78-2,174) of HABIT fought TREEFROG (15-4177) (30-40-
0,122) of GREENWARDENS. S. MARY ROSE bested TREEFROG in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
conflict. Well, at least Treefrog gets to lose to someone different today.
MARTIN BLANK (82-28434) (38-10-0,207) of BLOOD TITANS fought SLEEPWALKER (74-
2843) (59-111-1,177) of DARKLINGS. MARTIN BLANK overpowered SLEEPWALKER in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. Some days it's actually better to, like, wake up
early. Weird, but true.
REM (74-2853) (94-72-0,202) of DARKLINGS fought REDTHORN (15-4943) (32-35-0,169)
of GREENWARDENS. REM savagely defeated REDTHORN in an exciting 2 minute gruesome
fight. So much for "thornier" today.
STUMP (15-4882) (32-65-0,187) of GREENWARDENS fought CONTROVERSY (64-3914) (46-
52-1,184) of UNDER DURESS. STUMP was viciously subdued by CONTROVERSY in an action
packed 2 minute gruesome fight. This is just, you know, something I don't even want
to talk about.
RED BARON (33-1092) (62-61-3,196) of LUROCIANS II fought SEKHAT (7-2251) (49-89-
2,195) of CASTAWAYS. RED BARON overpowered SEKHAT in an action packed 1 minute
gruesome uneven melee. Probably with anchovies.
KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (135-177-5,219) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES fought FLESH RIPPER
(74-3375) (30-13-1,195) of LUROCIANS XI. KOOKABURRA was devastated by FLESH RIPPER
in a 1 minute mismatched match. This is just amazing. I mean, three hundred fights,
and Kooky's "mismatched" with a guy who only has thirty-some? That really tells you
something.
NIGHTCAP (74-2745) (209-132-0,237) of DARKLINGS fought SMUG BUG (55-2900) (118-
191-0,217) of RHYME TYME. NIGHTCAP devastated SMUG BUG in a popular 1 minute uneven
brawl. Good. Squash that Bug.
The challenges:
BILBO BAGGINNI (9-5508) (40-20-0,203) of MIDDLE ITALY challenged ARGUMENT (64-
3915) (42-56-0,210) of UNDER DURESS. Up 7. BILBO BAGGINNI demolished ARGUMENT in a
2 minute uneven Challenge fight. I call that, you know, a WINNING argument.
GIMME SOME SUGAR (19-4936) (56-42-0,198) of ARMY OF DARKNESS challenged SERGE
(32-3549) (46-49-0,187) of ASSORTED. Down 11. GIMME SOME SUGAR subdued SERGE in a 1
minute Challenge melee. Okay.
GARY M. REAPER (32-2502) (70-42-1,198) of DEVIL ADVOCATES challenged JEO THE
SONGSMITH (1-3260) (64-132-0,198) of BLUE EYRIE. Straight across. GARY M. REAPER
devastated JEO THE SONGSMITH in a 3 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Well, good.
Jeo gets above himself sometimes, which, with his record, he shouldn't, but there it
is.
For the title:
GAZELLE (56-3701) (105-104-0,253) of REDHORSE fought LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966)
(56-53-1,224) of LUROCIANS II. GAZELLE was defeated by LORD FIREFLASH in an exciting
3 minute Title fight. This is, like, a win-win deal. Lord gets to be Lord Marshall,
and Gazelle doesn't have to write a column. Congratulations.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Sleepwalker -- And then you fell asleep over the drinks. I'm not getting that. But
maybe I should learn, since you keep winning.
Bilbo Bagginnni -- Well, you had that one in the bag in a hurry. -- Stump
Flesh Ripper -- If we do this again, I'll try to be thornier. -- Redthorn
S. Mary Rose -- I don't see why you have to get so mean. Many a rose has bloomed
happily beside a mossy rock. -- Mossrock
Sandman -- The handicapper hates me. I always knew that. -- Wooden Arrow
Machine -- I just scooped up a bit of sand and dropped it into the gears, and presto,
I won the fight. I'm amazed it was that easy. -- Whitebraid
Sleepwalker -- We just did this, and it's a really unfair match. I think I should
get points for simply SURVIVING. -- Treefrog
Gimme Some Sugar -- Well... thanks for bumping me into a winning record, barely. You
are a good representative of your style, but you're so much newer at this than I am.
Good try. But why weren't you training skills? -- Gazelle
Gary M. Reaper -- You've got some mighty good defenses there. It's fun to try to hit
you. -- Sekhat
Argument -- Oh, what a rotten matchup for you! I'm sorry. -- Nightcap
Did you arrange it?
Serge -- That's all you've got? Cute pointy ears though. -- Rem
Martin Blank -- Aha! Groundlubber, you were no match for my... oh wait... damn! --
Jeo the Songsmith
Wooden Arrow -- You're welcome for the skills and congrats on the rating. It's fun
to come limping out of the arena only to see a smiling clerk with a scroll of
achievement to award to you, isn't it? -- Sandman
Treefrog -- It was one of those sad matchups, wasn't it? Sorry. -- Sleepwalker
Is this YOUR fault?

NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA
The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
"But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
