                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out FREE BLADES to
see what's new. MVP award for WHITEBRAID? GREENWARDENS' proud of him after beating
SLEEPWALKER and getting 29 points. Well, they would be, if they were paying
attention. Talk about yer major upsets! SLEEPWALKER's match with WHITEBRAID cost
him a loss of 27 points! And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit
of...(!) Oh well, the fire hazard was, like, severe, so, welcome NIGHTCAP. Aren't
DARKLINGS proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine
hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos. Or they would, if we had,
you know, cameras.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. DARKLINGS was FREE BLADES' most avoided team. Is there some award
for that? I don't know what DEVIL ADVOCATES' been doing. They certainly haven't
been accepting many fights from DARKLINGS, that's fer sher.
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do? What? Oh, Olaf says
I should, like, remember that's why you're here in the first place. To fight.
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. It's been really albendranius! Later, guys-- Debby Tonte

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

A well-written column, Gazelle. I'm sure you and your teammates are the very model
of respectable citizens. -- the Greenwardens

Marei -- This is the beginning of my winning streak. Just watch! -- Wooden Arrow

Rem -- You may have gotten past my thorns in the arena, but wait till you see what
your DREAMS are like. -- Redthorn

Sandman -- No. I'd rather come limping out of the arena and receive a victor's
bonus. -- Wooden Arrow the Ungracious in Defeat

Gary M. Reaper -- I wave my armpit in your general direction. -- Jeo the Songsmith

Lord Fireflash -- I thought I'd won. I could have sworn I heard the Arenamaster
shout "That's it!" so I lowered my sword and turned away--and you hit me! Guess what
I heard was a spectator. How embarrassing. -- Gazelle

But you don't have to do a column now.

Smug Bug -- Kick your manager, man, and tell him to change your train! -- Nightcap

     Not going to happen.

Red Baron -- Bah! Would you please kick MY manager and tell her to let me use a
lighter weapon? -- Sekhat

Redthorn -- You're tough. But not fast enough. -- Rem

Martin Blank -- Titan? You look like a dwarf to me. Nimble, though. -- Sleepwalker

Savory -- Eh. Bad luck for you, that match. Your style is weak against mine. --
Sandman

Wooden Arrow -- If the handicapper hates you, buy her flowers. -- Sandman

     It's a guy.

Treefrog -- Yup, it's unfair. Like life! -- Sleepwalker

                              "DARK ARENA" -- The Novel

For centuries, the Shagornan Elves have been forced to live underground.
Human invaders, the Delarquans, burned their forests, sparking a war of elven
annihilation. The elders told tales that when the Delarquans marched to war
against the elves, the land itself bled as they passed. Since the war, the
elves have dwindled with every passing year, while the humans multiply like
rodents across the land of Alastari.

Now, the Delarquans have disappeared. Some say they departed, others indicate
it.s a ruse, but there have been whispered rumors of another greater threat
looming in the region. Khyron of the Shagornan Elves has been tasked to
determine the cause, realizing that failure is probable and at the end of the
road death could be the only reward.

Khyron has known only the safety of the caves, but now he must journey to the
world above...the World with No Ceiling.

Throughout the years, many fine writers have played Duelmasters/Duel II and have
contributed greatly to the history and background of the world of Alastari. One very
intense period, during the early '90's, was during the Rocanis War, when authors from
both the Delarquan and Free Blades arenas collaborated on writing the history of the
invasion of the arena-city of Rocanis. Mark Manley (aka Grimwood) is a long-time
manager in Rocanis, and was one of the writers who contributed so much to this
history. Over the subsequent years, he has worked to bring his novelization to life
and make the story of the War and the preceding events which led to it available to
the greater public. Many Rocanis legends appear in the book: Itoz Trollbane,
Sandstorm, and others. The novel is a treat to read--even more so if you are familiar
with the game!
