                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
                           Reflections by the Lord-Marshall

Once again I enjoy the honor of addressing you from the Lord-Marshall's fancy
chair. It's fairly comfortable. Over the years, gladiators who have sat here have
made improvements. The cushions are really nice, and the upholstery is... well, it's
a nice bright red, but it's satin and one tends to slip off. That's why you always
see the Lord-Marshall gripping both arms of the chair, you know?
I've decided to take this "Marshall" thing more seriously. I've started
patrolling the arena and the neighborhood around it, speaking sternly to folks who
throw trash instead of disposing of it properly. Trash should be sorted into paper,
metal, clothing, home goods, and food, and placed in waist-high containers that can
be easily accessed by the city's homeless. I call this "recycling." And I suggest
that if you're throwing away food that's still good, you might want to wrap it in
paper, and note on the wrapper what it is and the date it was discarded.
I'm also giving disapproving looks to those whose clothing is sloppy or unclean.
And to those who deal violently with their neighbors, I am dealing violently.
Not TOO violently, but... I guess we need another category of waste bin for violent
offenders. I'll drop them in gently.
I'm not entirely sure this Marshall thing is a good idea, but since I've got the
title, maybe I ought to be doing it, right?

Lord-Marshall Nightcap

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Okay, here we are. Another day, another groundhog--it was a week ago, but
still--and another lot of winter coming down. But not enough snow to ski. Bummer.
Oban got the most points at 33. Savory lost the most at 27. Same fight. Where
did the extra five points come from? Well, I was, like, watching really closely, and
what it looked like was that the people in the stands were tossing fractions of a
point out every time they saw a really good move. You know, a tenth of a point here,
a third over there, and it adds up.
Devil Advocates (that's Dark One) avoided Darklings (She-Puppy). I won't say
"most avoided," because, you know, nobody else seems to have done anything like that
today.
I don't think anyone was most challenged. Probably a tie.
Sixteen fights, two challenges (both by Dark One), NO STANDBYS. One fight was
exciting, and one was action packed, and the rest were just ordinary fights. Two of
'em at four minutes each were tied for longest. Most days, I'd say four minutes
isn't very long, but it was COLD out there today. Four minutes was LONG ENOUGH.

MOSSROCK (15-4871) (42-49-2,132) of GREENWARDENS fought KING COREY (43-4620)
(29-23-1,93) of LUROCIAN ROYALTY. MOSSROCK beat KING COREY in a crowd pleasing 4
minute brawl. Well, I should hope so! I mean, with more experience and, you know,
points, I should just HOPE Mossrock wins. But it took him four minutes. Oh, well.
SAVORY (32-4143) (38-36-1,166) of DEAD WE SUCK fought OBAN (35-4213) (20-10-
1,114) of ON THE ROCKS. SAVORY lost to OBAN in a 2 minute fray. Well, you can see
why Oban got a lot of points for this, and why Savory dropped like the temperature on
a winter night.
     SLEEPWALKER (74-2843) (60-113-1,179) of DARKLINGS fought TREEFROG (15-4177) (30-
43-0,135) of GREENWARDENS. SLEEPWALKER vanquished TREEFROG in a 1 minute mismatched
bout. Well, of course. I mean, everyone vanquishes Treefrog, even when they're
asleep.
SANDMAN (74-2896) (64-93-3,177) of DARKLINGS fought WOODEN ARROW (15-4619) (34-
42-0,140) of GREENWARDENS. SANDMAN overpowered WOODEN ARROW in a popular 1 minute
mismatched conflict. Sometimes I wonder if the handicapper ever heard of a level
fight. Because even I know about, like, level fights. But do we see them? Not
much!

     S. MARY ROSE (78-2313) (66-79-2,171) of HABIT fought WHITEBRAID (15-2110) (41-
68-1,169) of GREENWARDENS. S. MARY ROSE subdued WHITEBRAID in a crowd pleasing 1
minute match. So, okay, say something and it'll turn around and bite you. This one
is level enough in points, if not in, like, experience. What I think is S. Mary was
jealous, or at least, envious of Whitebraid's hair. Lots of people want to be
blonds, but they don't realize how much WORK it takes to be a blond. You have to
take CARE of blond hair.
     MACHINE (56-3795) (42-40-0,192) of DIRTIE fought STUMP (15-4882) (32-68-0,176)
of GREENWARDENS. MACHINE savagely defeated STUMP in a crowd pleasing 4 minute bloody
competition. Yep. No surprises.
SEKHAT (7-2251) (50-91-2,186) of CASTAWAYS fought SMUG BUG (55-2900) (119-193-
0,204) of RHYME TYME. SEKHAT was overpowered by SMUG BUG in a popular 1 minute
brutal one-sided melee. Or here, either. Nothing like three hundred fights to get
the better of a mere one hundred forty!
FEEL THE BUZZ (35-2490) (32-18-1,188) of ON THE ROCKS fought CONTROVERSY (64-
3914) (47-54-1,158) of UNDER DURESS. FEEL THE BUZZ vanquished CONTROVERSY in a 1
minute one-sided fight. Well, I gotta tell you, if *I* touch a rock and it's
buzzing, I leave. That isn't something I stand around and, you know, stare at. As
if!
KOOKABURRA (33-4151) (136-179-5,202) of GIRL SCOUT COOKIES fought REDTHORN (15-
4943) (33-37-0,172) of GREENWARDENS. KOOKABURRA vanquished REDTHORN in a popular 1
minute gruesome uneven duel. Fossils. Do I "gotta love 'em"?

SERGE (32-3549) (47-51-0,197) of ASSORTED fought MARTIN BLANK (82-28434) (40-11-
0,210) of BLOOD TITANS. SERGE was handily defeated by MARTIN BLANK in an action
packed 1 minute uneven fight. Just, like, blanked out.
RED BARON (33-1092) (63-63-3,189) of LUROCIANS II fought ARGUMENT (64-3915) (43-
58-0,195) of UNDER DURESS. RED BARON bested ARGUMENT in a crowd pleasing 1 minute
match. You know, there's some people (mimes) who win arguments by throwing pies.
And some who throw pizza pies. That's such a waste!
LORD FIREFLASH (33-2966) (58-54-1,212) of LUROCIANS II fought SCAPA (35-4198)
(27-13-1,181) of ON THE ROCKS. LORD FIREFLASH devastated SCAPA in a popular 1 minute
uneven brawl. Burned him.
GAZELLE (56-3701) (107-105-0,235) of REDHORSE fought FLESH RIPPER (74-3375) (31-
15-1,198) of LUROCIANS XI. GAZELLE defeated FLESH RIPPER in an exciting 3 minute
fight. Well, of course. Gazelle didn't want his flesh ripped. I mean, who would?
REM (74-2853) (97-72-0,238) of DARKLINGS fought GIMME SOME SUGAR (19-4936) (59-
42-0,220) of ARMY OF DARKNESS. REM overpowered GIMME SOME SUGAR in a 2 minute bloody
mismatched duel. I had a dream about this.

One of the challenges:
GARY M. REAPER (32-2502) (72-43-1,207) of DEVIL ADVOCATES challenged JEO THE
SONGSMITH (1-3260) (64-135-0,192) of BLUE EYRIE. Down 15. GARY M. REAPER vanquished
JEO THE SONGSMITH in a 1 minute uneven Challenge battle. Really, Jeo should retire
and just sing.

And the other challenge, for the title:
BILBO BAGGINNI (9-5508) (43-20-0,232) of MIDDLE ITALY challenged NIGHTCAP (74-
2745) (212-132-0,289) of DARKLINGS. Up 57. BILBO BAGGINNI was bested by NIGHTCAP in
a 1 minute Challenge Title fight. This is probably a good thing. I mean, I don't
have anything against Bilbo, but Nightcap will write a column. But it was a good
try, Bilbo.

                                       Debby T.

Gary M. Reaper -- It serves you right that you were not able to learn anything. Take
that! -- Jeo the Songsmith

Martin Blank -- Oh, what a really unlucky match for you. It goes to show, I should
challenge. And if I want to pass the title to someone else, I'd better, eh? Anyway,
good try. -- Nightcap

Scapa -- Now here I am with a winning record, thanks to you. And I mean it. Thanks!
Although I don't like hitting women, generally. -- Gazelle

Flesh Ripper -- Luckily, my desperation strategy works pretty well, doesn't it? --
Rem

Serge -- What is it about my ankles that you hate so much? -- Sekhat

Controversy -- Good try. I enjoyed that bit at the start where our speed was so
obviously matched. -- Sleepwalker

Wooden Arrow -- Really, what else would an arrow be made of? I'd think a metal one
would be too heavy. -- Sandman

Lord Marshal Nightcap -- So, are you a doric column, or an ionic one? I'm fairly
sure you aren't corinthian. -- Jorja

Savory -- It didn't work, I am *not* bald. That's because it's resurrection moss.
Kinda like resurrection ferns. It always comes back. -- Mossrock

Feel the Buzz -- Debby had that right, what *I* felt was the bruise. -- Whitebraid

S. Mary Rose -- You think you won, don't you? But a frog can crawl right up your
skirt, and we have COLD noses. -- Treefrog
P.S. I never used to think I was a genuine frog. I thought it was just a name. But
lately, well, I've been catching flies with my tongue. Euwh! I need a pricness to
come along and kiss me.

Sandman -- I hope you got splinters. -- Wooden Arrow

Machine -- Damn, you're one of those woodchip machines, aren't you? -- Redthorn

Lord Fireflash -- I hope you broke your toe when you kicked me. -- Stump

Rem -- My dreams are TOTALLY private! -- Redthorn
