In the Far West:
Herlas sat at one side of the boat next to the rail, wrapped in his cloak and
staring out to sea; he ignored everybody. Shania sat in the bow, wrapped in her
cloak, staring out to sea, and ignoring everybody. The rest of the group, Ashon
Chang, Werre, Rughal, Vurand, and Jammies, went about the business of getting the
boat ready to sail. When the tide turned and started outward just before sunset, the
boat went with it.
Werre, Rughal, and Jammies handled the actual sailing, two on and the third
resting in rotation. Werre had sailed before, Rughal had some knowledge of boats,
and Jammies was a fast learner. It would turn out to be an exhausting schedule,
which they all realized, but Vurand was worse than useless on a boat, Shania didn't
have the strength to help, and Ashon Chang's job was to keep a close and constant
watch on Herlas.
The sun set before they were out of sight of the coast, coloring the sea before
them like blood.
"A bad omen," Vurand muttered, staring westward past Shania's motionless form.
Ashon Chang hesitated, looking away from Herlas to the red sea beyond. One
could not deny the reality of omens, but.... "Our journey will be what we make of
it, my friend."
"And we're nearing the end of it," Jammies added, coming up behind the two.
"Praise Mantor for that!"
"Geographically, we may be coming to the end," Ashon Chang corrected him, "but
in terms of actions to be taken and problems to be solved, I suspect we aren't even
half-way."
"I didn't want to hear that," Jammies told him. He shrugged. "I know you're
right, but can't you let me keep an illusion or two for another few days?"
The last burning rim of the sun disappeared under the horizon, and night
unrolled from the east. The speed with which darkness fell was unnerving.
"The moon'll be up in a couple of hours," Vurand muttered uneasily. "I'm not
afraid of the dark." He sounded unsure of that, and yet all the party knew that it
was true. The Orc had moved through the darkness of the mountains and forests
without hesitation. But there was something about this night....
Ashon Chang glanced back at Herlas, but the Fratsfan merely shifted his position
a little and continued to stare into the distance. At the bow, Shania was invisible.
"Lady Silverstar should go into the cabin and sleep," he said suddenly. Saying her
name focused his vague alarm, and he stared forward, trying to pierce the darkness.
"I'll remind her," Vurand agreed. He braced himself on the side of the cabin
against the movement of the deck and edged forward. A horse was easier to ride.
Hell, if a horse made trouble, started pitching, you could get off and walk.
"Shania, you need to.... Shania? Shania! Rughal, Ashon, she's not here! Shania's
gone!"
"She...she just went into the cabin when it got dark, and we didn't notice,"
Jammies said quickly. He scrambled down into the low doorway to check.
Ashon Chang moved in a different direction; the samurai had his own suspicions,
and he'd been against including Herlas in their party once the man had confessed.
The Fratsfan mage hadn't moved except to stand up and stare forward. The gladiator
saw his face pale as pearl in the darkness. He grabbed Herlas' shoulder. "Where is
she?"
"I don't know--"
"TELL ME, damn you!" He shook the mage hard.
"I. Don't. Know," Herlas repeated. "I've been under your eye the whole time--
yours or one of the others. What could I have done, how could I have spirited her
away--"
"Magic."
"Not in the current state of the Arcanum," Herlas snarled. "My powers are not
so great that I can draw from Outside sources. And would I do something to Shania
and stay here to receive your vengeance? I'm not such a fool!"
"Very nearly, though," Rughal said grimly. He grabbed Herlas' other shoulder.
"You may not have taken her away, but you can make a guess as to who did, how, why...
and where. If you want to see the sun rise again--"
"The triumph of brawn over brain?" Herlas sneered. Then he let out his breath
in a sigh. "I can make guesses," he admitted, "but they won't do you any good. If
she was taken as I think, none of you could get near her." He sighed again. "I do
not wish Shania Silverstar ill, but some things are too important for personal
considerations--the restoration of the Arcanum is one of them. Shania understood
that herself. It is her goal. She's dying, as you know whether you admit it or not.
What better use for her life than to--"
Rughal's free hand closed around the magician's throat, choking off any further
words.
"Don't kill him yet, Rughal," Ashon Chang said grimly. "First let him tell us
his 'guesses' on what has happened to Lady Shania. Then I'll help you kill him."
One hand ran along the sheathed curve of his sword.
Rughal relaxed his grip a little. Herlas sucked in air. "Start with who took
her," the ranger said.
"I don't know names," Herlas gasped. "A coalition of wizards and priests--"
"Think of some names," the samurai growled. His dagger gleamed silver in the
starlight as he brought it up to prick the Fratsfan's cheek just below his eye.
"I don't know names! Just...Murluvir, the one who came to see me in Zensu. He
isn't the principal, just an agent, as I was to be--"
"Don't lie," Rughal said. His voice was cold and smooth as ice. Or steel. "As
you WERE an agent. For whom?"
"I don't know! I didn't ask. Some things it's better not to know...."
"Guess," Ashon Chang ordered implacably.
"I don't know!" Herlas panted, perhaps gathering strength for more denials.
But he finally said, "I suspect...Folstrom. Or someone like them. Someone who can
draw on power from Outside."
"So that's who...for now. Tell us why," Rughal demanded. Before the Fratsfan
could answer, he added, "And don't tell us it's another thing you don't know!"
"But I don't!" he wailed. "All I can do is guess--"
"So guess." Ashon Chang leaned closer. "But guess right."
"Maybe...because she's from Outside, too. Or because she's a seer. Because she
knows things that other people don't understand how to know. Or because she's linked
to the Ghean Arcanum even though she's an Outsider. Some of those reasons, all of
them, none of them. I swear I don't know!"
"And how was it done?" Ashon Chang asked. "We assume magic of some kind--
nothing else would make sense. But under current circumstances--"
"They have no fear, no discretion, no patience!" Herlas' exasperation seemed
genuine. "It must have been some kind of small Gate, but to open one NOW...the
risks...."
"And the last question," Rughal said in a soft voice that sounded no less
dangerous for its softness. "Where have they taken her?"
There was a long silence.
"You don't know," Ashon Chang said. His grip on the man's shoulder tightened;
he could feel bones grinding against each other under his fingers. "Guess."
"To the Eye of the West. Wherever it is."

The Isle of the Eye, Talahya:
"Okay, then, we know where we are," Scarlatti said. "But what do we DO now?"
"It would probably help to know what went wrong," Rogan suggested. They had all
returned to the park, making grateful use of Rogan's ability to find his way without
visual cues. "Why should the Isle of the Eye be cut off from the rest of Ghea?"
"That, at least, is easy to answer." Fizban wrapped his cloak more tightly
around himself. A clammy fog was not kind to old bones. "It's an effect of the
decay of the Arcanum."
"But you said the power levels were rising!" Scarlatti protested.
The old wizard nodded. "Because the Isle is no longer connected to Ghea, it is
no longer being drained of its power by the Ghean decline." He hesitated. "The
coupling of the Isle to Alastari and Ghea is, or was, more magical than physical."
"What? That's nonsense!" Scarlatti shook his head as if to shake out the
bizarre notion. "The Isle is ON Ghea, it's part of Ghea--"
"Well, actually, it isn't," Fizban said. "Have you ever looked at a map of
Alastari? Unless the drawing is totally out of balance, it shows the Isle as perhaps
two miles long--"
Even Rogan looked startled at that. "But it isn't--!"
"Correct, the Isle is much larger...because it is not really on Ghea, not
entirely." He paused. "I have sometimes wondered whether the Isle might actually be
in a pocket universe of its own."
"You can see the shore from--" Scarlatti began.
"From the ferries," Moonjumper finished. "I'd never thought about it before,
but for one apparent reason or another--mist, haze, whatever--I have never been able
to see the shore from the Isle itself."
"Exactly. The links between the Isle and Ghea are primarily magical," the
wizard repeated. "And with the decay of the Arcanum, those links have also decayed.
There's still some tenuous connection, but...." He shivered from more than the cold.
"How long till even those links erode?"
"What about new Gates opening, though?" Scarlatti wanted to know. "If there's
more power around...."
Fizban shrugged. "I don't know. I suppose the shifting of power balances have
had many effects; that might be one."
Before the others could respond, Rogan turned sharply, his epee glittering
silver in the fog-dimmed light. "Who goes there?"
"Carris Fallstar, from Andorak, and I'm not looking for trouble." He sounded
testy. "Not that anyone would have to LOOK to find trouble today."
The Isle of the Eye, Lirin Kiv:
"I really don't like this fog," Clemenda muttered, peering out of the hire-
carriage window uneasily. "We could be lost and never know it...."
"I'd know," Shylock assured her. No point in telling her that they were lost
already, unless the driver knew where they were. Weren't cab drivers always supposed
to know where they were? It was some kind of union rule; he'd read about it
somewhere. Besides, the White Rose was in Talahya, and surely they wouldn't get lost
on the road that ran from Lirin Kiv to Talahya? Maybe after they got to the city,
but not until then. It wasn't like there were any roads branching off this one. It
simply ran along the edge of the island from Willow Beach and Darkholm at the south
end to Talahya at the north end, with Lirin Kiv half way up the west side.
The carriage jolted as though the pavement (big stone blocks, who knew how
they'd been moved and placed?) had suddenly ended. It stopped, and after a moment,
there was a creaking shift as the driver climbed down. Shylock glimpsed his lantern
moving through the fog, going ahead past the horses, coming back.
The face that appeared at the window was white, eyes round with disbelief. "The
road is lost," the driver said hoarsely.
Shylock frowned at him. "You mean YOU are lost--"
"No! I swear, I was following the road right along, and then it...it just
wasn't there anymore!"
Shylock looked hard at the driver and decided the man wasn't lying. He might be
mistaken, but he believed what he was saying. And if he wasn't mistaken.... Well,
better to find out for himself, the gladiator decided. He unlatched the door and
stepped down from the carriage. "Wait here," he said over his shoulder to Clemenda.
"Not hardly!" She climbed down after him.
The driver held up his lantern, swinging it from side to side, which set shadows
swooping wildly. Shylock took the lantern away from him and held it steady.
It was true. A pace behind the rear wheels of the carriage were the flat stones
of the roadway. Under the wheels and ahead was rocky dirt and tangled grasses and no
sign that there'd ever been a road.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
My fellow Delarquans,
Welcome to yet another page in the vast annals of spyreports in Greywand's
arenas. Will this one stand out as one of the best? Probably not, but it isn't one
of the worst either. I hope.
Just two TV challenges went through this turn:
Voldric the Blue of Thundr + Litening vs. Barroch of Shepherds. Voldric in 2.
Fat Bastard of I'm so Sexy vs. Silas of Shepherds. Fat Bastard in 1.
The A Team (12) was avoided by Tormentors (14). Exiled Knight was most
challenged. He is our top parry-lunger so that shows some sand on the part of his
challengers. MISTRESS OF EVIL (18-3565) (27-13-3,208) of EVIL DEAD challenged EXILED
KNIGHT (1-4297) (24-17-0,252) of ROVING DOOM, our top parry-lunger. MISTRESS OF EVIL
was overpowered by EXILED KNIGHT in a 1 minute Challenge struggle.
The Runeblade was up for grabs this turn, since One Man Army has taken his one-
way trip through the Gateway. Formidable top striker MAHI MAHI (18-4899) (71-58-
1,270) of BIG MEAN FISH fought ARES II (69-1111) (37-27-0,195) of DEATH RELIVED.
MAHI MAHI handily defeated ARES II in a popular 2 minute mismatched Title
competition. We're going to miss One Man Army. May the realm of Kaikwok treat him
well. I hope we will see a column next turn from Mahi Mahi.
Our top basher, HOT (48-3858) (33-33-1,191) of OUTSIDE IS challenged HE-MAN (21-
3112) (43-32-0,200) of TORMENTORS. HOT slaughtered HE-MAN in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge fight. Should we send He-Man a wreath, as they do in Talahya arena? I
think not. But I will buy him a beer when he has recovered enough to keep it down.
At least he fought hard enough to bring the issue to life-or-death.
LARGE SPINNY GUY (23-4361) (42-26-2,192) of DIABLO TOO, a former Keeper of the
Runeblade, challenged LUCRETIA BORGIA (4-3563) (85-124-0,227) of LETHAL LADIES, our
overall popularity leader. LARGE SPINNY GUY vanquished LUCRETIA BORGIA in a 2
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Lots of people thought the Commission was going
to call that the Title fight, but they went with the Mahi Mahi fight instead.
QUID PRO QUO (10-4794) (16-3-1,52) of QUBIT fought MAGINOT MIKE (4-4509) (42-49-
1,44) of DOGS OF WAR. QUID PRO QUO was savagely defeated by this turn's favorite,
MAGINOT MIKE, in an exciting 7 minute fight.
Our two least loved "warriors" shared the same very long moment on the sands
this turn. ETCHED IN STONE (61-3112) (21-8-0,76) of CEMENTIA challenged AGONY (21-
3413) (31-10-0,100) of TORMENTORS. ETCHED IN STONE was viciously subdued by AGONY in
a 51 minute Challenge conflict. Fifty-one minutes! The poor folks in the stands
were in agony, all right, as every irregularity in the stone benches became etched
into their flesh.
Alas, the foundation spot. CONSTANCE (42-3875) (17-16-2,26) of FLAGG'S FIVE
fought BOOKIE'S GUARD (104-5) (35-18-0,75) of ARENA STAND-INS. CONSTANCE was
demolished by BOOKIE'S GUARD in a 1 minute uneven competition. Poor Constance! Now
your record has gone negative. Don't worry, though. You'll get your "Isle legs"
soon, I'm sure.
Gaak! I'm getting too sympathetic! It's un-Delarquan! I'd better go and see
about getting Eudora flogged.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I was robbed! Robbed, I tell ya! And to add insult to injury, I had to dig
myself out of an unmarked grave. It appears Sheila Greywand has a sense of humor. I
guess I'll have to wait to TV/TC at the next tourney. -- Doone
Janet Reno -- I'd like to return the athletic supporter you left on the sands. --
Doone
Desiree -- Of course I meant Flagg is my manager. I could only be so lucky to have
Job as a manager. -- Constance
Indeed. (wise nod) All right. -- Desiree (who has no copy of last turn's
newsletter)
Shocking Toad, the Manager -- I love the personalized quotes. I'm working towards
getting all my fighters using them. It is a lot of work, coming up with fun quotes,
but well worth the effort! -- Assurnasirbanipal
Nick, etc. -- Am I ranked below you again? I hadn't noticed. It took me two turns
to even notice your personal addressed to me. Unfortunately, I've become one of
those awful maintenance type mega managers. I just let my warriors go out on the
sands and record their trains when they come in. It is actually quite rewarding and
sure frees up a lot of time that used to be used planning and plotting strategies,
challenges, and avoids. I fully accept full responsibility for my lousy record and
slacking certainly accounts for a large part of it. The rest can be attributed to my
choice of which warriors to run here in Darkholm. -- Assur
Giovanna -- Now you know why Merlin let you go so cheap! I think it is safe to say
that there are few warriors who can ever attempt to compare themselves to me and I
have no equal in terms of how poorly I've done in the arena. Yet you lost to me
which says way too much about you! -- Job of Talcama
P.S. Are the tides turning on my fortunes? Probably not. Who wouldn't expect me to
win a bunch of fights in a fool's tournament! I am the ultimate Fool.
Splurge on Wax Lips -- Why waste your time and effort on getting wax lips, which look
quite unreal and off-putting, when you could work on getting a gender attachment
instead? Were it not for the jealousy of my manager back in Osksi, I would have done
precisely that. But I have enemies everywhere. -- Life of Osksi
The Madness -- Wow, I didn't even have time to wind up the ol' blade and ATTEMPT a
blow! They should call you The Fastness or something. -- Maginot Mike
Harlequin Tuskfish -- You're unnatural, and I can't abide that which is unnatural. --
Mucker
P.S. Besides, I want a winning record.
Sinister Midget -- No you're not, you're dexter. I could tell. -- Tolais Deepheart
P.S. Well (shrug), the boss says I have to speak to you, and I couldn't think of
anything else to say that would get past Ed.
Cooler -- It would be great if I got to go out on this win, but the odds are good
that Nick will not get around to deactivating me in time. (sigh) And by the time
you've got one or two more fights in your stash, you'd be able to beat me easily. --
Ruffille
Desiree -- Maybe you haven't been feeding Eudora properly. When she comes to my
house, she hyphenates just fine. -- Nick
P.S. Couldn't you do a find-and-replace to substitute?
I think Ms. Eudora has problems communicating with the "perfect" scribe. -- Ed.
Well MY scribe, who is Word Perfect but evidently not Punctuation Perfect, will
search for and replace anything except hyphens. She will however accept and use
hyphens in the normal course of business. It may be that, as Ed. seems to be
implying, she doesn't get along with Eudora. Be that as it may, Eudora seems to
have a deeply ingrained horror of the innocuous horizontal line and will expunge
it from any document given to her by me. She will deliver hyphenated documents
to me from others, though. I neither understand this finicky distinction nor
approve of it. Not only that, but she does a strange thing to the spaces
between lines and--oh never mind, it's too aggravating. I have put in a
request to have Eudora flogged, but the Commission is apparently backed up on
such requests for its various scribes, messengers and assistants. Now I simply
send my spyreports and other heavily hyphenated documents by way of Eudora's
rude country cousin, the Yahoo from Wahoo. I believe he adds spaces, lots of
them, but they're easy to delete en masse and it's not my problem anyway. --
Desiree
Shocking Toad -- You make my point very well. You're more experienced, probably,
what, sixteen years to my fourteen or something on that order? You're running
warriors chosen for fighting ability (mine are chosen for the ability to generate
personals), you're probably issuing challenges and avoids and making strategy changes
(I don't). Your teams should be ranked above mine. Hmm. Probably my major
advantage has been the period when my warriors fought a lot of Assur's bashers. --
Nick
P.S. Yes, I'm aware that Darkholm is reputed to be the toughest regional arena. But
I've got a lower ranking in Free Blades, and scarcely higher in Andorak. Lirin Kiv
is my best regional, but then, it's the smallest and a good run of wins will skew the
total faster.
P.P.S. We share plenty of arenas, but I use different manager names a lot, because I
get bored being the same person all the time. I believe that at one point you
compared fighting my warriors to fighting standbys, but I must point out that mine
write personals, and standbys don't.
P.P.P.S. Can I calculate my record here based only on the performance of my good
warriors? It'd make as much of a difference for me as it does for you.
Flagg -- Now I've been challenged! I must have warriors on the roster who are Even
Worse! I'll have to review the mini-overs and see if I can meet your challenge. We
could duel for the team foundation spot.... -- Nick
P.S. Hey, at least I have a chance of winning that one!
30 April 2003
All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned
in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI
