WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
Some months ago...
The spy Ulrich had told her that the two Lady Protectors were "in"; that they
had gained entrance to Castle Midnight with the aim of capturing the notorious
sociopath Dirk Cholera. Black Widow and Jadestone Doll each had on her person a
magical rune that would--theoretically--ensnare the villain's mind and make it
possible for Sheila Greywand to transport him to the Grey Tower.* Ulrich had also
gleaned information that when Cholera was out of contact with the earth for a
prolonged period, he seemed to weaken.
"This had better work," said Sheila Greywand, when Desiree brought her the news.
"You know I haven't forgotten that you let Dirk Cholera escape from the Isle a few
months ago when I could have put an end to him. Do you have any idea how many people
he has hurt and killed since then?"
"A great many, I think," Desiree replied. "Lady Greywand, I've done my best to
make up for that mistake. As you may remember, I died bringing you information about
where he is and what he is doing."
The part-orcish wizard uttered an exasperated snort and turned away, looking out
the window of her sixth-floor study. Desiree felt a flash of anger.
"Lady Greywand, perhaps you don't make errors in judgement. But the rest of us
occasionally--"
"Spare me!" Still looking out the window, the mage folded her arms. "I don't
need an enumeration of your character flaws. Naturally I will do what I can to
destroy the monster. But I know you're actually here to advocate for his other half,
the slightly less monstrous Japhor."
"Yes." It was infuriating that Greywand understood her that well. "Of course I
am. Zukal needs him."
"The question is, does Alastari need Zukal?"
"As the forest needs the wolves, my lady."
Greywand turned to regard her with a smile. "I thought the Delarquans were the
wolves."
"Of course not! We're leaders and statesmen."
With a shrug, the mage said, "I've run some tests on him. Without reabsorbing
Dirk Cholera, Japhor will not survive. In fact, neither with Cholera, but that form
of death would take too long."
"Is there some way for Japhor to get what he needs from Cholera without
accepting his evil as well?" Desiree wished she could have suppressed the note of
desperation in her voice.
Greywand frowned at her, and then her eyes softened a fraction. "I don't know
yet," she said. "I have my Academicians exploring that question from several
directions. Their research will go a lot faster once they've got Cholera to work
on."
"Well, I've sent my informant back to Castle Midnight to give our Lady
Protectors the information that he weakens when he's out of contact with the earth.
That'll help, I hope."
***** ***** *****
When the cell door opened, Japhor looked up from something he was writing. His
expression was glum; on top of that he looked slightly disappointed to see Desiree.
He'd probably been hoping to see Greywand, she supposed.
"Hello, Dirk."
"Hey kid. How are those girls doing--the ones who went after him?" There was no
doubt who he meant by the pronoun.
"They're in. That's all we know."
"Their chances aren't that good, you know."
"I know. At least we have tissue samples so they can be remade if he uses that
horrible disease on them."
"Yeah." He grinned. "The samples were taken before the girls saw me, though,
so if they have to be brought back that way they won't remember. Too bad."
"I believe Black Widow intended to castrate you or something like that."
"Yeah, she intended to try. She had some sand, that one. I liked her."
* This was before magical transportation of this type became too risky.
and about that same time or a little earlier...
The Naked Dinner
Black Widow bathed very quickly. While she appreciated the steaming water after
hanging around naked in the dungeon of Castle Midnight, she did not want to get too
relaxed, in addition to which there was a chance that the water was drugged. There
were two serving women who had been assigned to help her and Jadestone Doll. Both of
them were helping the Tzaltakan princess now; Jadestone Doll was in no hurry to get
out of the bath. Well, maybe a good hot soak would help to purge her system. The
princess was suffering withdrawal from some sort of addictive mushrooms.
Toweling herself dry, the Widow glanced at one of the serving maids, who was
tipping a kettle of boiling water into the trough that replenished the bathing pool.
"Where are our clothes?"
"None were provided, Mistress," replied the maid.
Mistress, thought Black Widow. What a strange castle it was, where servants had
to say that to prisoners of such low status that they were kept naked.
There was a knock on the door and then it opened. A teenaged boy came in
bearing a carved and covered wooden tray. He looked bruised and half-starved, and
had a wary air. He glanced from Black Widow to Jadestone Doll, clearly noticing the
fact that they were both unclothed. "Who ordered the mushrooms?" he said.
Black Widow sighed. "That would be..." She paused, trying to remember the
false names they were using. "...my sister Amalie. Amalie, I recommend that you lay
off the drugs, dear. We want our wits about us."
"Indeed we do," said Jadestone Doll, walking away from the woman who was washing
her hair. She walked up the steps of the bath, evidently enjoying the fact that the
boy's jaw had dropped. "That is why I need my mushrooms." Dripping scented water,
she crossed the carpet and seated herself on a chaise. "Boy, you may serve."
With a slight frown as though he were not used to hearing himself spoken to that
way, the boy lifted the cover and offered her the tray.
Black Widow approached, noticing that the boy's clothes had bloodstains here and
there. "I wonder if you are a son of one of the bandit princes?" she asked.
He looked up at her (he was a half-elf, not very tall). "Yes, ma'am. My father
is...was...is Danver Gull of the North Quadrant."
"And you don't know whether he's still alive?"
Watching in amazement as Jadestone Doll devoured two of the spotted mushrooms,
he nodded slightly.
"Our father was Sanshor the Grey," said Black Widow. "I'm Raura and this is my
sister Amalie. We've been away at school."
His mouth opened as though he were about to contradict her, but reacted to her
wink and said, "Ah...oh."

In the Far West:
Shania Silverstar stared at the man, eyes narrowed in calculation. She sorted
data quickly. A man of the local race, one she'd never seen before, not that she'd
seen all the races of Ghea. An advanced gladiator. The nearest of Lady Greywand's
arenas lay to the east of here, in Lirith Kai. And the westernmost of those
arenas.... "You're from Simtakka?"
"Smart as well as beautiful, I see." Faintly sneering. Not mocking her--she
thought that he probably faced all life with a sneer. "I earned my immortality in
Simtakka," he admitted after a moment. His scarred hands flexed. "I did it the hard
way, too. The Adantri aren't all pushovers."
"The ones I've met aren't," Shania agreed. "And their sense of honor is strong.
Very strong."
He bristled immediately. "If you're expecting that kind of soft-in-the-head
honor from ME--"
Shania smiled faintly. Some things a woman didn't need magic to understand.
"You could have attacked me while I slept," she said. "But you didn't. Yes, I am
expecting that honor from you. My name is Shania Silverstar, I graduated from an
Andorian arena." She held out her hand.
"Andorian. Gods, I should have known...a lot more softheaded than the Adantri.
Gods curse the luck." When her extended hand didn't waver, he finally grasped it and
shook it once, then turned away. Over his shoulder, he growled, "I'm called Zakar."
"Zakar. Good. If you have food out there, I would be glad to share it with
you."

"There shouldn't BE a reef here!" Werre said again, scowling at his chart.
"But we're stuck on one just the same," Jammies said with cheerful tactlessness.
"Where do you suppose it came from?"
"Doesn't matter where it came from," Ashon Chang growled. "The important thing
is getting off it before the waves pound us into pieces."
"Which they will do," Rughal added, studying the clouds that were being driven
up from the south by a strong wind, and the increasingly rough sea below them.
"This is some kind of magical effect," Herlas muttered. He had been tentatively
readmitted to comrade-ship and allowed to move about the ship freely...although
Rughal was usually not far away. "The reef, at least. The coming storm," he turned
to stare southward, "I don't know. Even that MIGHT be magical. There's a mishmash
of forces at work here...."
"Can magic get us off this reef then?" Werre asked suddenly. "Can you do
something?"
Herlas shrugged. "I don't think so. This is not my area of expertise--weather,
ships, and the moving of large objects." His eyes, unusually dark for a Fratsfan,
narrowed as he stared into the water. "This is what comes of not stabilizing the Eye
quickly enough," he muttered. "It could have been prevented--" He twitched when
Rughal, standing behind him, growled. More briskly, he went on, "I don't think
there's a lot I can do here, very powerful forces are at work--more powerful than
those any one, or any two men, for that matter, can muster. And if our hull has been
damaged, we might not WANT to get the ship off this reef, you know! Better to be
stranded than to sink."
"We won't sink if we get moving quickly enough," Werre countered. "If we get
off right away. But if we stay here and let the wind and the waves pound us and drag
us back and forth across whatever it is we hit--"
"Looks like the top of a belfry," Jammies said, hanging over the side.
Werre looked at Ashon Chang, who stared back at him. Then both of them glanced
around. They were in the middle of a plain of water, with not even a rocky islet to
be seen.
"I don't suppose it matters what we hit," Ashon Chang said after a moment. The
important thing is to get off it without having the bottom torn out of our ship."
"Well, at least this explains why there aren't a lot of other ships following
this good current," Vurand said. "What do we do?"
"Two men over the side," Werre decided. "With ropes to keep them from being
swept away, of course. To find out exactly how we're hung up." He glanced around
the little group. "I presume all of you can swim?"
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Shania washed her hands in the little stream that flowed through the shrine,
then sat back against the wall and sighed. "I needed that, thank you. Delicious."
Zakar, squatting on the other side of the stream licked his own fingers and
snorted. "Delicious," he repeated mockingly. "I bet you never ate korry in your
life."
"That the food was unfamiliar doesn't make it necessarily inedible," she
retorted. She glanced out the doorway of the shrine. Twilight had fallen, but the
sounds of a large population were still audible, and the light breeze carried the
scent of thousands of cooking fires as well as the smell of a seacoast. "How long
can we stay here?"
Zakar shrugged. "I don't suppose Hodan cares, even if he really is a god and
not just a myth. But we're both going to have people looking for us, and sooner or
later, they'll look here."
Shania blinked. "They'd violate a religious sanctuary? And what 'they', come
to think of it? I know I am likely to be pursued by priests, but what about you?"
"Everybody'd like to catch me." He seemed to take satisfaction in that. "I'm a
flaming revolutionary. And a heretic, too. 'Course, those're the same thing, here
in Zinaco." At her surprised look, he added, "They're a theocracy."
"What did you do to--? No, that's none of my business, I suppose. How do we
get out of here before we're found? Do we work together," she wasn't sure she wanted
to work with Zakar, there was something about him...but he was the only potential
ally she had here, "or each manage our escape separately?"
Zakar was silent for a long time, studying her with a critical gaze, the way he
might look at a horse he was thinking of buying. From someone he didn't trust.
Finally he said, "We work together." His hard mouth curled into a smile of sorts.
"I've got half an idea, but it would mean playing roles--you much good as an
actress?"
Shania's eyes narrowed. He seemed too pleased with his idea for it to be
something she was going to like. "Depends on the role." She considered mentioning
her magical skills and immediately decided against it. Better to keep that knowledge
in reserve until she knew Zakar better. And maybe not then.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
In the end, it was Ashon Chang and Rughal who went over the side. "Because,"
the samurai explained to Rughal as he slid down a rope and into the water, "we are
victims of our own honor. Werre must remain with the ship, as our most skilled
sailor, neither Jammies nor Vurand swims well, and Herlas claims that he cannot swim
at all. Less honorable men than we are might point out--" He gasped. "The water is
colder than I expected! Might point out," he continued, moving out of the path of
Rughal's descent, "that no great degree of swimming is required, and there ARE the
safety ropes...."
Rughal laughed, which Ashon Chang considered a small victory; the ranger hadn't
so much as smiled since Shania had been taken from them. "I'd go back up and do just
that," he said, "but we're already down here and wet, so we might as well take a look
at things."
The two men made their way along the small ship's waterline, probing with light
poles for depth. Rughal, who was in the lead, made the first find. "Something
here," he said, handing Ashon his pole. "I'll take a look." Before the samurai
could reply, he doubled and thrust downward vanishing beneath the surface.
The next minute seemed a very long one, and Ashon Chang began to hyperventilate
in preparation for diving himself.
Rughal resurfaced, gasped in breath, and said, "It IS a belfry! Or at least the
roof of some kind of tower. Hard to tell what, and who cares? I think we can get
off when the wind changes, IF it changes, as it usually does at sunset."
"Is the hull damaged?"
"Not that I can see. It's a roof with two ridge poles, and the front of our
ship is sitting between them like they were the jaws of a vice. We can't go forward,
but we should be able to go back, if the wind will cooperate." Rughal grabbed his
rope and began to pull himself up hand over hand.
"Excellent!" Ashon Chang began to pull himself up as well. "If the wind
doesn't cooperate, we will get Herlas to do it."

Not Lirin Kiv:
Shylock, who had been lurking behind a hedge of rosebushes as Master Dan Shao
explained the war with the Grey Witch to Clemenda, frowned and sank down onto a handy
bench. This would require thought. This "Grey Witch of the East" sounded nearly as
powerful as Sheila Greywand, and if that was the case, she was a threat to his plans.
She would have to be removed--which had the added advantage that it would apparently
make him a hero to these people. Or else he would have to write off this world as a
place to establish himself and find some other. Because he had no intention of
sharing power....
The thing to do, he decided, was to visit the home city of this Witch. He
didn't have to actually meet her to discover just how much of a danger she might be.
But he had to be closer. And fortunately, there was an obvious reason for the
journey: He, and also Clemenda, which would get her out of the hands of that cursed
Master Dan Shao, would be seeking aid in finding and closing the Gate that had
brought them here. An obvious reason, and one that no one could fault.
He would propose the plan to Dan Shao immediately. No point in wasting time.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't see why we had to rush off like this," Clemenda muttered. "Another day
or two wouldn't have mattered."
"It might matter," Shylock assured her. "With magic, you can never tell about
things like that. It MIGHT matter." He drew her down onto the bench beside him,
smiling at the water that separated them from Master Dan Shao. More water every
minute. "Besides," he said, "I promised you dinner in Talahya, and I can fulfill
that promise till we get home."
"But the Gate we came through must have been back there on that island!"
"Gates are magic and don't always follow linear logic, my dear."
"But--"
"And besides, Dan Shao sent men out to search the island, and they reported that
the Gate is gone. Or at least closed." He shrugged. "So we need to consult someone
who understands the magic of this world. Dan Shao said the greatest magician or
wizard or whatever you want to call her, the Grey Witch, lives on an island--Thallia,
it's called--to the east."
Clemenda sighed. "Okay, I don't argue with your logic, I guess. But I hope
it's not FAR to the east, because I don't like sailing." She swallowed twice and
moved back toward the rail, leaning over it. "I really don't...."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't know how far it is to Thallia," the ship's captain said. "I don't sail
there. Just the Irindan Sea, and to the Pillars of Gold, the gates of the Middle
Sea, you know, no farther." He gestured toward the east. "It's dangerous out there!
Our Sea Patrols keep order in the Irindan, but the Middle Sea is full of pirates.
Dangerous place, and you'd do better not to go. Stay in Lirith Kai. No place else
is as good anyway."

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Warriors and Warrior Princesses,
I'm sorry I wasn't here to do the report last turn. I had urgent business
elsewhere on the island. I see that Zontani did his usual...job. Well, though I
can't say I'm feeling the flame of inspiration at the moment I'll try to do better
than him. Barroch, thank you for your column last turn and please tell
Assurnasirbanipal that I'm very sorry to see him go, even temporarily.
Sir Aglio (9) was most avoided by The Mentors (10). Saliel was our most avoided
Warrior Princess. JANET RENO, lawyer princess (42-3823) (34-34-1,197) of I'M SO SEXY
challenged SALIEL (3-5485) (57-46-1,204) of ZODIAC KNIGHTS. JANET RENO was
devastated by SALIEL in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge match.
Nobody cared enough to kill anybody.
There was only one TV challenge that went through. How depressing. MANUS (63-
1783) (55-23-1,226) of BAILE BEAG TV challenged SUE E. SYDE (39-3240) (37-29-1,196)
of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. MANUS devastated SUE E. SYDE in an action packed 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. At least the Tournament Victor won. I hate when they
lose.
Lee at Tourney went away, leaving the title up for grabs. The Runeblade has a
new Keeper. DOONE (42-1183) (44-41-2,288) of FLAGG 16 fought MAJOR TOM (21-4598)
(42-32-1,203) of SPIDERS FROM MARS. DOONE overpowered MAJOR TOM in an exciting 1
minute one-sided Title match. I'm not sure why the Commission felt this fight and no
other was the Title fight, but they did. Congratulations Doone. You looked pretty
good out there. Nothing personal against Major Tom, but you should have killed him
to make it really decisive.
Our overall popularity leader is Speedi; let's look at his fight. LARGE SPINNY
GUY (23-4361) (53-30-2,206) of DIABLO TOO fought SPEEDI (58-3029) (92-77-3,197) of
SHAMROCKS. Master aimed blow practitioner LARGE SPINNY GUY vanquished SPEEDI in an
action packed 1 minute one-sided fray. It was good but it was too short. On the
other hand, the scum sympathy vote went to Rodeki Rambler who was actually out on the
sands long enough to get cold and tired. RODEKI RAMBLER (42-1158) (35-48-0,118) of
FLAGG 16 challenged TOWER (7-4461) (36-19-1,151) of BLADES OF ICE. RODEKI RAMBLER
was viciously subdued by TOWER in a popular 8 minute Challenge fight. It's fiercely
cold in the arena right now, but I have heard that you don't feel it during a short
fight. Eight minutes, though, that's enough, especially if you're a lunger and not
wearing much. Not that metal armor is particularly comfortable in winter either.
Aside from that fight, the longest was three minutes. Everyone wanted to keep warm.
The overall popularity award always goes to someone who provides exciting fights
with lots of leaping, dodging, last-minute blocks and spectacular lunges. The "most
popular this turn" award usually goes to someone the audience thinks was scummed.
But the "least popular" award is most often given to someone in the lower ranks who
stumbled around on the sands looking just plain inept. This turn, the distinction
goes to Huge Twirling Man. THUNDER BUG (37-3734) (14-9-0,51) of TACKLE BOX fought
HUGE TWIRLING MAN (24-4457) (18-8-0,43) of DIABLO ALSO. THUNDER BUG overpowered HUGE
TWIRLING MAN in a 1 minute one-sided brawl. You will note that the poor sod is third
from the bottom. Sorry, TB. Challenge, avoid, raise your kill desire and do better
next time.
Now, at the very bottom of the active warriors you will see Arsonist Art, who
has not moved from where he was last turn. Here is his fight: TYR (3-5575) (17-3-
0,54) of AESIR fought ARSONIST ART (39-3325) (23-17-0,36) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. TYR
demolished ARSONIST ART in a 2 minute mismatched contest.
I believe I've covered all the points of interest except for the advice.
Warriors, you may be wondering why your Warrior Princesses always complain when you
leave the seat up. The reason is, a Warrior Princess approaches the seat backwards
and has less chance to notice whether or not the seat is down. If you have forgotten
as well, then she will plunk down at a lower altitude than she expected, onto a hard,
narrow rim which is most likely coated with your sticky old pee. If she does not
smack you on the head for forgetting, then I may do so. Here is the correct
procedure for a warrior using a toilet: 1) use a clean handkerchief to lift the seat,
to avoid soiling it. 2) answer nature's call. 3) using some toilet paper, carefully
clean all residue from the rim and then flush the evidence. 4) thoroughly wash your
hands with soap and hot water...whoops! That should have been 5). I forgot to say,
put down the seat! By all the gods, it IS hard to remember!
With best wishes for the year-end feast and the turning of the sun,
Desiree (not my real name)

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager
