Jhans:
"That is a fight you cannot win, Princess Morra," Chancellor Ethylbyrr said. He
leaned forward to emphasize his point, one hand on the report that had sparked the
discussion. "It is better not to enter a battle you cannot win."
"Darron wouldn't--"
"Princess, your brother is no longer a boy, he is a young man now," the old man
said. "He will not be pleased to receive...advice from his older sister, much less
commands. Even without his new friends, he would be reluctant to--"
"All right, you've made your point." She looked away. Looked out the window
across the city of Jhans, but she didn't really see it. Didn't want to see it, if
the truth be told. She was surprised to realize that what she really wanted to see
at this moment was her husband, Gryzash the Golden. She had not felt strongly about
him one way or the other, theirs had been a marriage of political expediency. But
Gryzash was--had been--a confident, decisive man. One whose very presence would awe
these quarreling nobles of Jhans into obedience. Unfortunately, Gryzash was dead.
Her thoughts shifted briefly to their son, Gorris. She might have stayed in Jhans to
fight the treacherous 'advisors' of her brother, except...it was her first duty to
protect her son and defend HIS heritage. Let Prince Darron worry about Jhans now.
It was time for her to leave him to it, for good or ill.
"I must take Gorris to Sibikhas," she said finally. "That is where my duty lies
now. That city is his to rule, by rights, but it is easier to hold onto power than
to win it back after it's been lost. Will you stay here and advise Darron?"
Ethylbyrr laughed sadly and shook his head. "The boy--the young man--wouldn't
have me," he said. "His new friends won't want to share the influence, and...I am a
reminder of his youth. Which he would prefer to forget as he strives to become a man
in his own eyes."
"If you remain in Jhans without a royal post, your life won't be worth--"
"It will be worth nothing at all," the old man said. "I will be dead by the
time you clear the city's gates."
She nodded. There was no mercy in the Delarquan Federation for someone who fell
from power. "Come with me to Sibikhas, then. It would be a shame to waste your wit
and experience, old friend."
The old man half rose from his seat across the table and bowed. "I would be
honored to serve you in Sibikhas or elsewhere, Princess." Seating himself again, he
said, "But you cannot simply decide to leave Jhans and then go. You will need, at
the very least, bodyguards. The Jhans Royal Guard you cannot take with you--they
belong here and will provide some protection from Darron, if he does not run
completely mad and dismiss them. So you will need--"
"Gladiators," she said firmly. "Two or three, at least, as many as half a dozen
perhaps. They are--"
"They are crude men, for the most part," Ethylbyrr protested.
"So? They are less likely than any others to have political axes of their own
to grind. I will have gladiators for bodyguards." She grimaced. "I will need
them."
This is a call for volunteers. A personal, or an email to Livia@reality.com will do
it.

Not Talahya:
Carris Fallstar glanced around the interior quickly. The light was red and
seemed dim, though it was hot. Five free-standing hearths burned aromatic wood, or
maybe it would be better to say that aromatic woods smoldered on the hearths. There
was more smoke than flame and light coming from them. What little he could make out
seemed slightly blurred--three large lizard men and some anonymous pieces of
furniture. It smelled strange, spicy, musty, cloying without being sweet, an acrid
undernote. Reptilian, he supposed. "I suppose those three are the leaders, chiefs
or captains or whatever--"
"But they aren't reptiles," Moonjumper murmured, standing close behind him. Not
that she would have been overheard, as Thristle was making a long statement in his
own language. "At least, not what we'd call reptiles--they're warm-blooded."
"Then why do they keep it so blasted hot?" Scarlatti growled in his other ear.
"Must be what they're used to from their own world," Rogan suggested. "And...
there are more than three of them and Thristle here. I can sense several more at the
back of this space."
"Can't see 'em," Carris said after a moment. "The light's too dim, and all this
smoke...." He sneezed. "Not that I'm doubting you." Before he could say more,
Thristle's introduction came to an end.
One of the three lizard men they could see made a gesture. Thristle stepped
aside, allowing the man to face the gladiators without obstruction. "The young one
tells me that you are warriors in your own land," he said. His voice was deep, his
words heavily accented, but clear enough. "That you wish to return to your own
land."
The tone of the last sentence made it a question. "This is true," Carris said.
"It seems that our world is in some ways much like this one, but in others much
different. And the biggest difference is that this is not...home."
A sort of whistling sigh ran around the room, every lizard man sharing in it.
"We understand this distinction," the leader said. "We also feel it. If you
will help us to regain our Home, our Great Triliske, which is primarily a matter of
fighting, then we will call upon the priests and power-workers of Great Triliske to
help you to your Home."
"Seems like a fair deal," Scarlatti muttered quietly.
"There is more to it than shows," Fizban whispered back. "Else they would need
no help."
Carris Fallstar nodded very slightly. "I see that your men are all warriors,
and Thristle has told us that you are trained to it," he said, "and I wonder what
difference a few more could make."
The lizard man's head dipped in acknowledgment. "It is true that we are
fearsome in battle. But we cannot fight until we have reached the battlefield, and
the way to it lies through a realm of such cold that we would be nearly helpless. We
know this because we have made the attempt, and nearly half our number died in it.
We need those who can withstand the cold long enough to open the door for us."
"Presumably after fighting our way TO the door," Carris murmured. "And in
return for this, you will ask your wizards to open OUR door."
"That is the bargain we offer you," the big lizard agreed. "Of course, our
'wizards' cannot serve you until we have fought our way through to Great Triliske,
and your aid in that fighting may also be important, but..." the man spread his hands
in a curiously human gesture, "that is the best we can do--for you AND for
ourselves."
"It's difficult to be sure with an unfamiliar life form," Rogan said after the
silence had stretched into a full minute, "but I think, if this man is holding
anything back, it is not a critical fact or..." the blind Aruaki hesitated and then
shrugged, "not something of critical importance. I think he is truly offering the
best deal he can."
There was no need to consult his companions formally. Carris could feel that
the humans were in agreement. Probably it was an aspect of their short lives that
they made up their minds so quickly. The elf shrugged in his turn. "We'll take your
deal," he said. "When do we start?"
The Isle of the Eye, truly Talahya:
"The Arcanum with respect to the Isle has stabilized for the moment," the wizard
Tanrith reported. "But I don't know--"
"I am not interested in what you don't know," Sheila Greywand snapped. "Tell me
what you do know. Where are the gladiators who were caught by wandering Gates during
the first flux? Or don't you know that?"
"I'm not certain, but indications are that they ended up somewhere in the
Thallian realm. It is, after all, one of the other universes most closely tied to
ours."
Sheila's brows snapped together in a truly formidable frown, one that emphasized
the orcish part of her heritage. "It's HIM, isn't it? That damned Dwarf is doing
this to me, and I won't stand for it! I will take him DOWN."
"Er...shouldn't we see about getting the displaced gladiators back, first?"
"Nonsense. A mere half dozen? They're easily replaced," she snarled.
"Besides, I need to make an example. After they way gladiators failed to retrieve
the Eyes--"
"That was not their fault," the old wizard argued. "Nothing lasts forever--that
is a fundamental law of the multiverse. The Eyes have reached the end of their
span."
Sheila fixed him with a hard stare that had a glint of...almost madness. "I
could have extended them, IF they had been brought to me in time. Get me the
coordinates for all the Gates that link Ghea with Thallia. Do it NOW, old man."

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Well, dears, Desiree has gone home for the holidays. I do hope she has a lovely
time. Such a hard life she lives here, you know. All that spying and being a femme
fatale. Not really NICE, you know, although I have been assured that "someone has to
do it." I'm sure I don't see why. It quite coarsens the fiber, and leads to
unladylike behavior.
But enough of that, we don't want to make the poor girl a byword and a hissing.
I'm sure you want to hear all about the social whirl here in Willow Beach this week.
As always, it has been very BUSY here. I note that Raindance has been AVOIDING
Spiders from Mars. Surely you have forgiven them the unfortunate incident of the
spilled tea? It was naturally distressing, but the gentleman of breeding does not
hold a grudge, dear.
Slayer II of The Mentors was QUITE the most popular man in town this week.
Everyone wished make his acquaintance. Take care, Slayer, dear, popularity can be
overdone. You would not wish to become too COMMON.
These were the engagements of note today--
WORK IN PROGRESS (38-4193) (20-45-2,72) of JUST BECAUSE chatted with B.A. TURRY
(39-3383) (14-13-1,46) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. WORK IN PROGRESS was abashed by the
comments of B.A. TURRY in a 1 minute one-sided conversation.
BRADEN (6-4867) (49-84-0,78) of THE LADY'S LIST met with RAW SEX APPEAL (82-
1331) (11-4-0,90) of WHY WE LOVE TUM. BRADEN savagely rejected the attentions of RAW
SEX APPEAL in a crowd pleasing 1 minute harsh rebuke.
MEN WORKING (38-4189) (25-40-1,62) of JUST BECAUSE encountered ARSONIST ART (39-
3325) (23-19-0,36) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. MEN WORKING was devastated by ARSONIST ART's
coldness in a 3 minute one-sided meeting.
ZOT ZIPZIG (6-5688) (17-16-0,78) of NIGHT TRAIN chatted with SEX ON THE BEACH
(54-2435) (19-11-3,43) of INDULGENT DRINKS. ZOT ZIPZIG overpowered SEX ON THE BEACH
in a shameless 2 minute display.
PROFESSOR GRIM (10-2613) (21-11-0,97) of THE MENTORS encountered PORK CHOP (9-
3878) (12-5-1,100) of PIGS ON PARADE. PROFESSOR GRIM overpowered PORK CHOP in a 1
minute one-sided snack.
MIMIC BLENNY (18-7541) (26-13-1,138) of BIG MEAN FISH dallied with SLAYER 3 (10-
2530) (26-12-1,95) of THE MENTORS. MIMIC BLENNY handily defeated SLAYER 3 in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided debate.
CHIEF STORMCLOUD (51-4306) (27-11-1,148) of RAINDANCE paused to chat with OLD
SAILMAKER (104-7) (0-0-0,110) of the Willow Beach Old Salts Club. CHIEF STORMCLOUD
overpowered OLD SAILMAKER with astonishing tales of "the one that got away" in a 1
minute one-sided liars' contest.
OH WELL (10-2205) (29-25-4,174) of THE MENTORS exchanged smiles with BASS (5-
3666) (50-86-2,150) of JOHNS. OH WELL was rejected by BASS in a tension packed 1
minute meeting.
DOC STEELE (18-6010) (51-102-6,153) of ARROGANCE spurned the hand of friendship
offered by MAGINOT MIKE (4-4509) (52-56-1,135) of DOGS OF WAR. DOC STEELE was
overcome by MAGINOT MIKE in an action packed 1 love-fest.
LIFE (3-4196) (36-123-0,151) of GAMES LIBRARY attempted to snub ROB A. REE (39-
3241) (31-17-1,176) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. LIFE was savagely defeated by ROB A. REE in
an exciting 2 minute gruesome exchange of insults. Shameful. Provoked, but
shameful.
EXCREMENTO (51-4968) (39-36-1,162) of GUANO GROUP took tea with THE HUNGER (21-
4622) (21-10-1,141) of SPIDERS FROM MARS. EXCREMENTO slimly lost the battle for the
last bun to THE HUNGER in a popular 2 minute tussle.
SPEEDI (58-3029) (92-79-3,199) of SHAMROCKS encountered TORNADO (6-2249) (27-33-
2,174) of ACTS OF NATURE. SPEEDI was swept of his or her feet by TORNADO in an
exciting 1 minute whirlwind.
TOLAIS DEEPHEART (42-1620) (82-94-0,196) of DELVERS chatted with OBSESSIVE (58-
2447) (42-35-1,196) of ELEMENTS OF PSI. TOLAIS DEEPHEART was handily defeated by
OBSESSIVE in what turned out to be a heated 1 minute one-sided debate.
SINISTER MIDGET (6-5113) (38-43-5,184) of LOOK OUT BELOW exchanged glances with
IRON HEAD LEE (18-6563) (13-3-0,172) of THE GUARDIANS II. SINISTER MIDGET was
overpowered by IRON HEAD LEE's weighty mien in a 2 minute uneven view.
FACEMAN (38-4129) (43-36-2,200) of THE A TEAM encountered MAJOR TOM (21-4598)
(42-34-1,180) of SPIDERS FROM MARS. FACEMAN was overwhelmed by MAJOR TOM in an
exciting uneven 1 minute exchange of civilities.
BRAHMA (97-731) (29-30-4,192) of ONE SURFING HINDU met with BEDLAM'S BARD (2-
4144) (28-21-2,157) of MYTH AND MIGHT. BRAHMA easily soothed BEDLAM'S BARD in a 1
minute mismatched philosophical competition.
BLACK WIDOW (37-1303) (53-62-2,205) of BEAST MASTERS chatted with SUE E. SYDE
(39-3240) (38-30-1,206) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. BLACK WIDOW's views on dating were
demolished by SUE E. SYDE in an exciting 1 minute one-sided debate.
MAHI MAHI (18-4899) (86-60-1,196) of BIG MEAN FISH happened upon DARK ORIGIN
(42-2770) (26-16-0,192) of GUARDIAN'S SLAVES. MAHI MAHI devastated DARK ORIGIN with
a 1 minute one-sided account of his history. Very fishy, I thought.
DUSKY JAWFISH (18-6978) (39-37-1,208) of BIG MEAN FISH spoke carelessly to MISS
HONEY (36-4850) (61-55-0,191) of SCARRY TEAM. DUSKY JAWFISH was vanquished by MISS
HONEY who proved in 1 minute that a soft answer turneth aside wrath.
DOC STEELE (18-6808) (40-55-1,187) of ARROGANCE dallied with BUNNY WAILER (3-
5356) (34-22-0,192) of EXODUS! Good heavens, there are two of him! DOC STEELE was
savagely spurned by BUNNY WAILER in a popular, if messy, 3 minute encounter.
SID VICIOUS (18-6054) (34-24-2,240) of THE DARK TEMPLE spoke to HARLEQUIN
TUSKFISH (18-6977) (41-34-0,191) of BIG MEAN FISH. SID VICIOUS was devastated by
HARLEQUIN TUSKFISH's extremely improper 1 minute reply.
TRANQUILITY (36-3765) (50-39-3,213) of THE TAO exchanged bows with SIR ENE (10-
4360) (42-27-3,193) of SIR AGLIO. TRANQUILITY easily out-calmed SIR ENE in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided contest of cool.
BODHISATVA (36-4027) (40-25-0,228) of THE TAO looked upon SCHYLER (6-4866) (50-
83-1,200) of THE LADY'S LIST. BODHISATVA bestowed a blessing on SCHYLER in an
exciting 1 minute one-sided benediction. I had not realized that there were so many
people of a religious persuasion here. Remember, dears, that all religions are fine
so long as one avoids extremes. Extremes of anything are socially unacceptable.
JACK BOY (82-2030) (67-52-0,211) of ON A WHIM encountered CLEANER WRASSE (18-
6495) (61-58-2,237) of BIG MEAN FISH. JACK BOY was overpowered by CLEANER WRASSE in
a 1 minute one-sided bath.
DIERDRE (69-9439) (42-36-1,267) of FIANADHA smiled at THE WICKER KING (42-3904)
(24-18-0,183) of FURNITURE BARN. DIERDRE thoroughly subdued THE WICKER KING in an
action packed 4 minute, ahem, grapple.
LUIGI (6-5142) (28-34-2,150) of SUPER BASH BROTHERS sought to dance with TAPS
(96-841) (16-12-5,110) of MUSIC TO KILL BY. [Down 40] LUIGI handily out-danced TAPS
in an action packed 1 minute uneven minuette.
GREE CHAK (41-3859) (39-27-2,170) of KILLERS made advances to THANOS (37-1406)
(25-32-2,118) of NIGHT TRAIN. [Down 52] GREE CHAK overpowered THANOS in a popular 1
minute mismatched.... Oh, dear, I can't say THAT.
CHRISTIANITY (51-4965) (40-34-0,191) of GENOCIDE sought to convert MUCKER (42-
3596) (48-57-1,195) of DELVERS. [Up 4] CHRISTIANITY slimly won victory over
MUCKER's innate golemic resistance in a 2 minute moral struggle.
STORM XCIX (82-14095) (20-8-1,198) of DEATH STUDS VIII exchanged sonnets with
SHOCKING TOAD (7-310) (49-63-1,198) of NINJAS. [Straight across] STORM XCIX
overwhelmed SHOCKING TOAD in 1 minute with his exquisite poetry.
BUUL THE BULL (2-4840) (38-40-1,191) of RESURRECTION flirted with LADY STARDUST
(21-4601) (49-23-2,220) of SPIDERS FROM MARS. [Up 29] BUUL THE BULL was vanquished
by LADY STARDUST in a 1 minute rebuff.
The televised encounters:
MANUS (63-1783) (56-23-1,240) of BAILE BEAG TV made bold advances to SLAYER II
(10-2125) (39-24-1,302) of THE MENTORS. [Up 62] MANUS devastated SLAYER II in an
action packed 1 minute of, ahem, grappling and so on.
MAUI WAUI (40-3518) (33-16-0,283) of TACO GODS TV extended an invitation to
COOLER (82-7277) (29-15-1,219) of STYROFOAM. [Down 64] MAUI WAUI overcame COOLER in
a popular 1 minute which unfortunately displayed Cooler's lacks as a dancer.
I believe this concludes your social column for the week, dears, and no doubt
Desiree will be back next time. Perhaps she'll use her real name, do you think?

Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
