Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade

Sorry I didn't write last time, I was busy once again. I managed to get my challenge
in, though, and that's all that matters.

For this turn, I'm TV challenging Faceman, another one of Big Wave Dave's guys.
Black Widow, I'd like to give you a shot at the title but my alliance-mates come
first. If none of them reside in the GCCs next turn, I have to challenge Doone as I
promised him I would. You're next on the list after him, so if I can stay up here
long enough we'll surely meet.

Have fun on the sands,

Large Spinny Guy

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

My friends in Darkholm!

I am back. I'm sorry for missing the last two turns (don't know if anyone
besides Assur noticed). The first time there was a mix-up with the Commission's
notes, and the second time I was out of town. Not my fault. Perhaps it is worth
mentioning that I was involved in a carriage accident while far from home. No one
was injured, but it was my driver's fault and both carriages were pretty well smashed
up. The young fellow whom we hit just smiled and said, "Well, that's why they call
them accidents." The gentlemen whose home the accident happened in front of was very
nice and hospitable, the folks who rushed out of church to come and tend to the
(nonexistent) injured were very gracious as well as VERY elegantly dressed, and the
constable who cited my driver for being in the wrong lane said, "I'm sorry, sir, but
I have to give you this. It's state law." All of these folks were from a population
renowned for its impatience and rudeness. Truly, life is filled with surprises.
I suppose I must thank Olaf Modeen for writing the spyreport last turn.
However, I do not use hair spray, whatever that is, and I don't have big hair. My
hair is the standard size, just long and naturally a bit wavy.
The most challenged warrior was Braden of The Lady's List. There were no
avoids! I guess Assurnasirbanipal said those avoids of his would start NEXT turn.
As Alarond the Scribe points out, hiding behind large shields prevents proper sun
tanning. I'm not sure but I think this was a reference to avoiding, though I would
normally expect it to be a jibe at total parries. So just be aware, Assur, that if
you were hoping your warriors would catch some rays down at the challenge board, they
won't if they stand at the avoid window, which is in the shade. Oh, don't expect
sense. It's early morning and I haven't had my kav.
We had just one Tournament Victor challenge which was also our title fight.
Large Spinny Guy got his challenge, and lost the Runeblade. He had promised Faceman
the challenge. It's too bad he couldn't have kept the title long enough to give
Black Widow a shot at it, as he wished to do (and thank you for the column!). LARGE
SPINNY GUY (23-4361) (62-32-5,388) of DIABLO TOO TV challenged FACEMAN (38-4129) (46-
38-2,224) of THE A TEAM. LARGE SPINNY GUY was devastated by FACEMAN in a 1 minute
Challenge Title fight. Well done, Faceman! Interestingly, this fight was between
two Aimed Blow practitioners. It was like watching two cobras fight. They swayed,
they hissed (well, I couldn't hear, but I imagined that they did), and then suddenly
--Zat! One strike, and it was all over. Faceman, I would like to see you challenge
Black Widow if you're still on top when she comes into range. By the way, that was
our only TV challenge. There were four last turn. Manus, Maiu Waui, Chief
Stormcloud, why didn't you fight?
Note that our Keeper of the Runeblade could actually challenge up and stun any
Andorians who might be watching. Doone is a lunger (lunging stylemaster this turn)
with a not-so-impressive winning record, so Faceman would have the advantage of
style. Go for it, F.
No one was killed this turn, nor last turn either. What is going on? If you
fight as hard as you can, death blows will occasionally be struck. Fight harder!
This is serious!
And speaking of Black Widow as I was earlier, she lost to our overall popularity
leader, which is why she isn't in range for the title at the moment. BLACK WIDOW
(37-1303) (57-63-2,240) of BEAST MASTERS fought SPEEDI (58-3029) (96-80-3,209) of
SHAMROCKS. BLACK WIDOW lost to SPEEDI in a crowd pleasing 2 minute gory fray. Tsk
tsk.
Our longest fight was nine minutes and landed Super Bum in the unpopularity
list. SUPER BUM (82-18411) (15-8-0,52) of FLAT BROKE fought PROBLEMATIC (42-3928)
(22-16-0,82) of FLAGG'S FIVE. SUPER BUM handily defeated PROBLEMATIC in a 9 minute
gruesome mismatched match. Gruesome if you don't like to see people struggling to
hold up their weapons.
This week's favorite warrior was Zagnut, who unaccountably won the crowd's "scum
sympathy" vote although I should think Problematic would have had it hands down.
ZAGNUT (10-4745) (35-7-4,209) of TERRAPIN STATION challenged ETCHED IN STONE (61-
3112) (36-19-1,206) of CEMENTIA. ZAGNUT was luckily beaten by ETCHED IN STONE in a 5
minute Challenge duel. This was our second longest fight, so you can see no one was
going for an endurance record this turn.
Our least popular fighter this week was Men Working. MEN WORKING (38-4189) (26-
44-1,45) of JUST BECAUSE fought PEON NECROMANCER (18-7856) (17-14-3,68) of
SRETSAMLEUD. MEN WORKING looked pretty inept as he was overpowered by PEON
NECROMANCER in a 1 minute one-sided fight. He is now our arena's lowest-ranked
member; last turn he was the lowest-ranked active warrior. You know the crowd hates
it when warriors lose and they aren't that welcoming to newcomers. Hang in there,
MW, things will get better. Um, is that record of yours deceptive? Have you won a
lot of tourney fights?
Well, I think we've come to the end of this report. I have just one bit of
advice: don't believe it when someone tells you that everyone in a particular region
is hard to get along with. It's not a good idea to over-generalize that way. Even
in Darkholm, not everyone is hard to get along with.

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Sentinel -- Expect to see yourself highlighted in the spy report as the most avoided
team starting next turn. I didn't see my turn until well after I'd sent strategy
sheets in so I didn't notice that you'd TV'd me (and since Desiree didn't write the
spy report, I didn't read that, either). You're welcome to continue to challenge my
warriors, but I'm also welcome to do my best to avoid your TV's.... -- Assur
P.S. I have a long memory and should I find myself in the reverse situation, I won't
hesitate to send my TV at you!

Silk -- Surely you don't think you can compete here in Darkholm, almost losing to me
like that, do you? -- Cyclops

Dr. Dazzle -- Another happy customer! -- Numbered Won

Quid Pro Quo -- Uh, thanks for reminding me that weapons break -- Assur

Sultan -- I'm not sure if I should be glad for you welcoming me back.... Do you want
me back for me or the easy pickings my bashers give for you? -- Assur

Desiree -- Come back, please! Darkholm 2 turns in a row without you is truly a
wasteland! Without you, I'd even be tempted to move all my warriors to that 100
arena. As far as which 3 are my favorite warriors, Hansel, Blinky, and Job, of
course. None of them are very good, of course, but I've had more fun with any ONE of
them than most of the rest of my warriors combined! Can you imagine the stress I
went through waiting for every turn to come back when Job was in his 0-72 run?!? --
Assur

Assurnasirbanipal -- Thank you for the kind words. It was only circumstances
beyond my control that kept me away for so long. Yes, I imagine, Job's run was
quite a nail-biter towards the end. Where is he now? Is he really in Primus?
It does seem there is no justice on the Isle. -- Desiree

Life of Osksi -- I was not suggesting that you would be in Primus anytime soon. Just
that there could be a day (someday) where you might actually be in Primus and perhaps
Job and you could face off again. I know I enjoyed their fights, though clearly you
are the better warrior. I suppose it isn't without reason that a warrior goes 0-72!
-- Assur

Manus -- Not one of my more impressive fights, but at least we each benefited from
it. -- Tolais Deepheart

Harlequin Tuskfish -- Now tuskfish filets! -- Mucker

Geo Metro -- You call THAT "cool wheels"? RIDICULOUS! The Ford Model A (in black)
is the ULTIMATE cool wheels. -- Life of Osksi

Tornado -- You blew me down. Good fight. -- Maginot Mike

Readers, and especially those who volunteered warriors -- My apologies for the sudden
lack of episodes. I've been sick, but expect to be back at the keyboard soon. -- the

MONGO'S MARDI GRAS MADNESS DUELMASTERS AUCTION

Mongo, aka Matt McIntosh and ex-Warden of the Dark Circle, is auctioning off his
entire collection of Duelmasters warriors and stables. Don't miss out on this chance
to own some fantastic warriors! There are ADM warriors available in every class from
Primus to Freshmen, as well as over a dozen Basic stables.
Does a Slasher with +4 attack, +4 decisiveness, +3 initiative and +2 riposte
sound good? How about a Lunger who received the benefit of a TC prize, has TVed
three times after graduating--and still hasn't maxed out his skills!? How about a
Striker in the Freshmen class who has decisiveness for a favorite learn and the MAUL
for a favorite weapon!?
Or perhaps you prefer playing in Basic. Then how does a stable with four Adept
class warriors who have a combined record of 41-19-9 sound? Or maybe a stable with
three 21-Will warriors? Or perhaps a stable with four Initiates and a Rookie who
have a combined record of 23-6-1?
The quality of the lots is excellent. All you need to view and bid on the lots
is go to:
          http://members.aol.com/jvmerlino/mardigras.html
If you want to be on the mailing list to receive regular updates on the auction,
just send an e-mail to JVMerlino@aol.com. Merlin, aka John Merlino and also an ex-
Warden of the Dark Circle, will be running this auction for me. I just moved to New
Orleans and am likely currently stumbling around the French Quarter...because it's
Mardi Gras! So I have named my auction in honor of this occasion.
The auction will start on Saturday, March 13th, 2004, and will continue for
several weeks. But you should get your bids in early if you want your best chance at
owning any of these fantastic warriors and stables.
Many thanks to all for your interest and your bids,

Mongo

Style Masters Symposium
Hosted by Hammer

The years have slipped by and many DM Managers have come and gone since the last
Hammer's Handbook was compiled and printed.
There is now a stirring within me to begin writing and editing yet another
Handbook with a distribution date sometime in 2005.
This Handbook will be made available via Email with a possibility of burning the
info to a CD for distribution.
Special arrangements will be made to provide the information via printed page to
those contributors who are serving sentences behind bars.
The working title of this new Handbook is "Style Masters Symposium Hosted by
Hammer".
Distribution of this Handbook is projected to be MAINLY for those DM Managers
who contribute information/articles to Hammer by June 2004.
Informative and entertaining articles should focus on insights regarding Any or
All 10 Style Masters for both the Basic and ADM arenas as well as Tourney
competition.
Articles focusing on Weapons/Armor are also encouraged for inclusion.
Whether you are a Newbie Manager without a clue or a Jaded Veteran; everyone has
discovered something about this gaming experience that is both Insightful and
Entertaining.
Email Your Articles to HammerDM@fastermail.com or send them via Diplo to either
Flower Hammerz (372) in DM 28 or Casino Hammerz (576) in DM 33.
Length and Content of the Style Masters Symposium Hosted by Hammer will be
Determined by the Quality and Quantity of Contributors Combined with the Literary
Efforts of Hammer who is currently overseas for an indefinite period of time.
Articles Contributed for this Project should be of Sufficient Length and Content
to Warrant being Included to Receive the Finished Document when Hammer has completed
this literary work to His satisfaction.
Managers contributing articles are also requested to include a DM Bio of
Themselves along with any Notable Successes and/or Failures during Their DM Career in
Basic, ADM and/or Tourney Play.
A listing of Active Stables would also be Helpful for Anyone Seeking to Reply to
Contributors via Diplo, Email or Snailmail.
