Old Valamantis:

The group of gladiators moved toward the edge of the risen city as slowly and
carefully as they would have approached a sleeping dragon... that maybe wasn't
sleeping after all. There was a partial wall separating the buildings from the
countryside around them, but it must be outside the area of effect, because it was
not in good condition. There were gaps and fallen stones, even trees growing between
them where the ages had trapped dirt.
Smeds of Mordant patted one of the stones thoughtfully. "Honest stonework
here," he murmured.
"And more recent than the ruins," Shamu of Cliffhome agreed. "Six hundred
years, I'd say." He glanced at Smeds, and the other Dwarf nodded agreement.
"Built just before the most recent Chaos War," the Silver Mage said, "to keep
things in the ruins from getting out. Brought down by that war, at least in part.
But..." he touched several stones lightly and smiled a little, "not completely
useless even now and against this enemy. Honest stonework, as you say, but there is
a barrier spell bound within the stones, and it remains."
"If the spell is still working, why are we worrying about the ruins?" Smeds of
Mordant demanded.
"Because the spell will not keep working much longer." Tensekai frowned across
the wall into the city. "It was a good wall and a good spell, but it won't hold
Folstrom forever. Nothing--" He stopped and looked uncomfortable.
"You were going to say that nothing will hold the Folstrom forever?" Sputter of
Dwes Eg asked.
Tensekai shrugged. "No absolute statement like that should be trusted, but I
can honestly say that nothing we've found so far, except raw Chaos, will stop them.
We have new spells, of course, but what was there to test them on? We don't know."
"Yes, okay, but what are we supposed to be DOING here, then?" Lavender Lance of
Illis asked.
"You must observe," the Silver Mage answered promptly. "And I must go with you,
because there are some things ONLY a mage can observe. If we can find the keystone
of the spell that holds the towers up, we could destroy it, yes, and it might be a
good thing to do so, but the towers are just a symptom. There are more dangerous
things in Old Valamantis than just the towers."
"Those things being?" Smeds cut in.
"The wizards, obviously," Lavender Lance snapped.
"Again, just a symptom," Tensekai said. "Dangerous, yes, very dangerous,
but...."
Ka D'Argo, who had never been described as stupid, even by his enemies, nodded
slightly. "The wizards in Old Valamantis were resurrected along with the city," he
said slowly. "You think there might be some way for them to reach other wizards,
other Folstrom, of THIS time, don't you? That's what we have to prevent."
     Tensekai nodded.
     "How?" Smeds demanded.
"I'm not sure," the Silver Mage admitted. "Killing the resurrected wizards
might do it."
"But you don't think that's enough, do you?" Goblin said.
"No. I think we'll have to destroy the old city again," Tensekai answered.
"And that won't be easy with all the blood that's been spilled there. Not when blood
magic is at its strongest, as now."
"But it can be done?" Smeds asked.
"To get rid of bloodstains, soak in cold water and hand-wash," Lavender Lance
muttered.
Tensekai turned toward her slowly, eyes wide. "WHAT did you say?"
The Illisni gladiator backed up a couple of steps in the face of his intensity.
"It's how you get bloodstains out of cloth. Soak it in cold water--"
"Yes!" The mage stared around almost feverishly. "We'll need a LOT of cold
water...."
"Ice," Smeds suggested. "From the mountains above Khalhums. Dwarves can do
that." He glanced at Shamu, who nodded. "We're on it." The two Dwarves stepped
aside, muttering together about sledges and sawdust.
"If the wizards now in Old Valamantis realize we're trying to... quench the
blood magic, they'll move to stop us," Ka D'Argo said. "So securing the arena and a
route of access will be our job."
"And if any wizards get killed in the process..." Goblin bared his fangs, "too
bad for them."

Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade

I've now been moved over to Primus as the commission thinks I'm too good to hang
around here. Having a few Grandmasters will do that to a guy, I guess. This
should've been my 6th or 7th column in a row but that pud Faceman took me down. I'm
still scratching my head over that one. Aside from him, I think I had the inside
track on Doone, Black Widow (we did get a chance to fight, finally), and all the
other guys that were hanging out around the top of the arena.
I've had a good head start on my training so I should be able to hold my own up
there. Only time will tell.

Good luck everyone and goodbye Darkholm!

     Large Spinny Guy

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Forty-five fights? What is Darkholm coming to? There should be a hundred
fights, two hundred hardy warriors striving for glory, and what do we get? A
piffling forty-five fights, with only fourteen, that's FOURTEEN challenge matches. I
blame the wench. Who'd put a WOMAN in charge of reporting on Darkholm? She's barely
better than Novgorodny Vir, who tried to muscle in on this report. Vir listens to
"zen masters." You'd think he was Andorian or something.
There were no deaths, which the wench considers a bad thing. Not a bit of it!
It's the enemies of the Dark Federation who should be dying. You want to see deaths,
sneak over to Talahya and kill some Andorians in your spare time.
Next Generation was avoided by somebody, I forget who. Does it matter? They're
all a bunch of wimps anyway. Flat Broke avoided them. Pfui. Cowards. Braden got
the most challenges.

Of our measly fourteen challenges, here's what we've got.
STRAFE (82-11158) (13-11-0,69) of BLACK PRIMERS challenged ASHANTI (6-5352) (19-
28-4,37) of KREWE OF DRUID. Down 32. STRAFE defeated ASHANTI in a popular 3 minute
Challenge duel. Looks good, Strafe. Ashanti had enough fights to know what side was
up, but he couldn't demonstrate that to anyone's satisfactions. People talk of
losing warriors "washing the dishes"! Whip them all the way around the arena, *I*
say.
NUMBERED WON (18-7434) (21-25-0,82) of NEXT GENERATION challenged MEN WORKING
(38-4189) (26-49-1,36) of JUST BECAUSE. Down 49. NUMBERED WON overpowered MEN
WORKING in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. As you see, "Men Working" was
probably a Fratsfa Slave in disguise; they never work. They just stand around
looking "cool." Kill him next time, Won.
HE HATE ME (18-7820) (19-18-2,66) of WASTELAND challenged BRADEN (6-4867) (55-
88-0,100) of THE LADY'S LIST. Up 34. HE HATE ME devastated BRADEN in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute one-sided Challenge battle. May Braden be buried in obloquy, as he
is plainly unworthy.
LUC STARWALKER (58-6100) (32-34-0,85) of NEXT GENERATION challenged B.A. TURRY
(39-3383) (18-19-1,53) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. Down 32. LUC STARWALKER demolished B.A.
TURRY in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. Probably an elf. B.A. Turry,
that is. You know what those Xochithlani are like! Even the ones who aren't elves
are decadent.
MY1STADMWARRIOR (37-4668) (23-9-1,90) of SRETSAMLEUD challenged WENT TO MARKET
(25-4288) (21-19-2,81) of THIS LITTLE PRIGGY. Down 9. MY1STADMWARRIOR was
overpowered by WENT TO MARKET in a 1 minute Challenge fight. You couldn't even beat
an ANDORIAN? I hope they dropped you three times, My1st.
ARSONIST ART (39-3325) (30-22-0,98) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT challenged LUIGI (6-
5142) (30-41-2,123) of SUPER BASH BROTHERS. Up 25. ARSONIST ART overpowered LUIGI
in a action packed 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Good job, Art, even if you
ARE some cursed Xochithlani elf. Bashing is un-Delarquan, the kind of thing some
rock-for-brains Free Blades Shew would do. Do unto him first. That's the Delarquan
way.
NEOSPHINCTER (18-7317) (23-10-1,117) of WASTELAND challenged QUID PRO QUO (10-
4794) (29-13-1,158) of QUBIT. Up 41. NEOSPHINCTER viciously subdued QUID PRO QUO in
a 3 minute Challenge fight. This is incredibly stupid, you know--challenging way up
like that. Bear in mind that piece of Delarquan wisdom which says: It matters not
how you play the game, just WIN, dammit!
LINK (6-5144) (26-41-2,144) of SUPER BASH BROTHERS challenged THANOS (37-1406)
(28-39-2,139) of NIGHT TRAIN. Down 5. LINK was handily defeated by THANOS in a 1
minute uneven Challenge melee. Another intellectually challenged basher (all bashers
are intellectually challenged, or they'd be lungers) gets his.
SEX ON THE BEACH (54-2435) (26-14-3,129) of INDULGENT DRINKS challenged LIFE (3-
4196) (39-130-0,146) of GAMES LIBRARY. Up 17. SEX ON THE BEACH was beaten by LIFE
in a crowd pleasing 3 minute gory Challenge brawl. Gods, there are days when I would
cheer to see both warriors lose! "Sex on the beach"? This is a WARRIOR name? And
we all know what a worthless piece of manufactured "goods" Life is. A couple of
deaths, that would be the exact thing.
     ELI (18-7272) (22-30-3,126) of SHEPHERDS challenged PEGASUS (6-4161) (25-27-
1,123) of KREWE OF DRUID. Down 3. ELI was devastated by PEGASUS in a crowd pleasing
1 minute one-sided Challenge duel. Isn't that just LIKE a peasant (shepherds are by
definition peasants), to get trampled by a horse?
SILAS (18-6796) (38-60-2,170) of SHEPHERDS challenged DOC STEELE (18-6808) (42-
63-1,149) of ARROGANCE. Down 21. SILAS defeated DOC STEELE in a exciting 2 minute
bloody Challenge fight. Neither of these so-called warriors had a right to
arrogance. Arrogance is for the elite, not for those with losing records. Bah. The
deterioration in quality here is appalling.
CYCLOPS (7-4625) (25-26-1,174) of BIG BAD challenged TOLAIS DEEPHEART (42-1620)
(86-100-0,192) of DELVERS. Up 18. CYCLOPS was savagely defeated by TOLAIS DEEPHEART
in a 2 minute Challenge duel. Defeat is the proper desert of the arrogant, and
challenging so recklessly was arrogant. But they do say that for perspective, or in
simpler words judgment, you need two eyes, and as everyone can see, Cyclops is
deficient in the optical department. Has he, perhaps, spent too much time on the
beach at Bonsur, looking at the "babes"? That will burn out an eye, no doubt. Other
things, too. Decadent, oh yes.
ROB A. REE (39-3241) (34-24-1,184) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT challenged GREE CHAK (41-
3859) (45-31-2,184) of KILLERS. Straight across. ROB A. REE subdued GREE CHAK in a
exciting 1 minute Challenge melee. Let this Andorian "killer" (a mere two kills?"
suffer, I say! Hit him again!

And now a fight both commendable in that it involves a warrior who was a
tournament victor, and utterly disgusting in that it took TEN HOURS to complete.
What kind of Delarquan can't vanquish his enemy in TEN HOURS? A DIFFERENT GRAPE (82-
1258) (39-28-1,203) of MY WIFE'S COSMETICS TV challenged ETCHED IN STONE (61-3112)
(41-19-1,250) of CEMENTIA. Up 47. A DIFFERENT GRAPE viciously subdued ETCHED IN
STONE in a 595 minute Challenge fight. I suspect that this vicious Grape is a closet
Andorian, and it is PLAIN that the Karnhorn Etched is lacking in motivation. If I
had my way, the arenamaster would have been out there after the first half hour
motivating both participants with his sword.

And for the Runeblade, a totally degrading match with a standby. A standby!
The past proud Keepers of the Runeblade will rise up in their wrath and wreck a well-
deserved vengeance on this arena, or else we can start calling it Andoria South.
SLEEPLESS PARANOIA (82-2252) (21-17-1,218) of PARENTHOOD fought SOLACIA (104-24)
(68-32-0,225) of The Miscellaneous Losers. SLEEPLESS PARANOIA vanquished SOLACIA in
a 2 minute one-sided Title match. Pah!

                                     DEATH FEST

The ferocious ghosts of former glories whispered across the wind swept sands of
DM 59; agonizing incessantly due to the diminutive demise of the Delarq arena known
as Illis.
Tattered banners and forgotten memories wailed in the wind for a dynamic death
march to dawn once more upon the blood stained sands of the Delarq slow arena.
The distant call crying for a declaration of restoration amidst the ruin of the
all but forgotten Delarq arena carried to the far corners of Alastari; drawing the
Devious, the Diabolical, the Dangerous and the Down Challenging to cross blades and
wage warfare among an assemblage of new stables managed by the Known and Unknown;
willing to spill fresh blood, while carving their destiny during 15 Rounds of contest
driven combat to be known as the "Illis Incredibly Diabolical Delarq Death Fest".
A lone cloaked figure huddled by lamplight in a remote outpost near the
crossroads of ElseWhere and ElseWhen; feverishly formulating the foundational
framework for the dawning of the Delarq Death Fest in DM 59, complete with
Gladiatorial Commission sanctioned prizes to promote the growing thirst for a Delarq
Slow Arena Death Festival.

Delarq Death Fest Opening Round debuts the first turn immediately following the
Summer 2004 F2F Tourney and continues through the completion of 15 consecutive
rounds.
Death Fest points are Won or Lost ONLY in the DM 59 Delarq Slow Arena [Tourneys
DO NOT Add or Subtract from the Death Fest Point Scoring System]:

Death Fest Scoring Format:
Win =3D +2 pts
Loss =3D -1 pt
Kill =3D +5 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Death =3D -3 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Dark Arena Kill =3D +10 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Dark Arena Death =3D -5 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Revenged Blood Feud =3D +5 pts [successful Revenged Blood Feud provides Death Fest
contestants the opportunity to cancel out 3 pts for Death and 1 pt for Loss; while
gaining +1 pt overall for the Revenged Blood Feud in addition to the +2 pts for Win]

DEATH FEST PRIZES will be awarded to the Top Ten Death Fest Stables on the basis
of Total Points*** accumulated during the 15 rounds of competition as follows:

1. Favorite Weapon Knowledge for 1 (one) warrior ranked Initiate or higher on the
Final Round to be revealed by RSI to each of the Top Ten Death Fest Stables
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters and NPCs [yet to be determined according to how
many DA Monsters and NPCs are available in DM 59 for Renaming]
3. The Top Five Death Fest Stables will receive New Team Rollup Certificates as
follows: 1st (10), 2nd (8), 3rd (6), 4th (4) and 5th (2)
4. Renaming Illis Arena for 6 months plus Receiving 6 months Free Play courtesy of
RSI will be awarded to the manager of the 1st Place Death Fest Stable
5. Discussions are underway regarding a possible Special Award granted to the Illis
Iron Stable qualifiers who compete in 67 of a possible 75 fights during the course of
the 15 consecutive rounds of the Death Fest [Key Factor is How Many (?) stables will
be competing in the Death Fest without drawing away participation by current managers
in the remaining slow arenas!] Therefore, it is important for all managers entering
stables in DM 59 for the upcoming Death Fest to contact RSI as soon as possible
regarding their participation in this contest so that a Final Ruling on the proposed
Illis Iron Stable Award can be issued by RSI.

***TieBreaker is determined on the Final Round by the DM 59 Newsletter Recognition
Rankings. The stable with the Highest Ranked Active Gladiator is granted the
decision. [Example: Warrior A and Warrior B are both listed in the Recognition
Rankings with 87 pts; however, because Warrior A is listed in the Recognition
Rankings ahead of Warrior B, then Warrior A is granted the TieBreaker Decision for
His/Her stable!]
