WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
Rattlesnake Shake sat squarely on the three legged stool stretching his hands
and arms and looking straight ahead. The tarp on the wall which drew his gaze was
one he had never seen before this day, but had heard of it many times. Throughout
his training, Destitute Noble had been big on giving his warriors something to
visualize before each dueling session, whether it was an arena fight, a tourney, or
even just sparring. He always said it made you more focused. In years gone by, he
would currently be considering what "tweaks" to make to his fighting style to best
suit his next opponent. This next fight though, he approached just like the one
before it, and the one before it. He always thought the best strategy was to hit
first, and hit last. He also knew though that most fighters in the eligibles
classification were not quite that easily defeated. Many, like him, had used the
years to train their physical strength so they could carry more armor, and were not
that easy to hit in the first place. One advantage he had over most of his opponents
was the thing that made it most difficult to land a spot on a squad as he began his
fighting career--that was his size. It allowed him to be first to the "punch" more
often than not, and he had been lucky enough to have his critical injuries spread out
across his rather large frame over the years, rather than suffer multiple ones to the
same area.
The trainer had been working on his left shoulder, but had just finished up,
wished him well, and left him alone to ponder his upcoming match. Snake glanced over
at his armor--it looked pretty much the same as it did when he arrived at the
tournament two days ago. He noticed a fairly severe dent just below the collarbone
where Fountains of Wayne had tagged him on turn eleven. Floyd's warrior had nearly
knocked him to the ground with that one, but Snake was able to recover and win that
fight. They had both started the fight with only one loss, and had it not been for
his scalemail armor, that shot likely would have given Snake his second. As it was
though, he had marched on to this point and now was in the title match. He looked
back at the tarp on the wall--it didn't look all that interesting until you watched
it for a while, then you would notice that the image changed magically before your
eyes. As he viewed it now, it was an image of three warriors. Two of them, he knew
well, and had sparred against many times, the third he had never met, but was a
legend among Noble's warriors. His name was First Founder, and was Noble's first
warrior to ever do what Snake was now trying to accomplish--win a tournament. The
image showed First Founder, and the other warrior named Fladrakeen Oosch (Snake
always called him Flad) standing slightly behind the much smaller third figure, who
Snake knew as Comfortably Numb. All three had managed to win tournaments over the
years, though Flad and Comfortably Numb had won theirs recently, while First Founder
quit fighting before Snake even knew what went on within the arena walls. Noble told
Snake he had commissioned the tarp way back when First Founder had won his victory,
and hired a mage to give it the enchantment of showing different visions. It
alternated between showing a picture of the three together in an informal pose, and
each warrior separately going through some of their battle poses. Snake was still in
awe of the tarp--he had never seen anything quite like it, though he had very little
knowledge of the arcane. As he watched First Founder balance the blade of his epee
on the tip of his finger, he knew he had the chance to get his image on the tarp now,
to be glorified forever, and hopefully to be an inspiration to future warriors. He
thought back on the last few turns which got him here. Since the eighth turn when he
fought a warrior named Gordon, he had faced an onslaught of some of the best aimed
blow warriors this side of Primus. In addition to Gordon and Fountains of Wayne, he
had faced off and beaten Stanley's Cup, Choking Chicken, and Nebuchadnezzar. Snake
was bitter that he had not been able to add Belial to that list, the mighty aimed
blow from Talahya. He had beaten Belial in a previous tourney, but had lost to him a
half a dozen times otherwise, and it would have made the journey that much more
satisfying. Then again, there would be time for Belial later. He refocused on the
tarp again, and the three great champions seemed to be staring at him, or maybe
through him. He was sure they could sense the fear and uneasiness inside him. Snake
exhaled and shut his eyes. He felt confident that even the mighty three had also
felt the same way before entering the arena for their title fight, yet he was not
sure if they had to face a warrior quite like who would be opposing him.
He had never seen her fight before, as she made her home now in Darkholm after
graduating from Talcama. He had heard tales of her prowess before the tourney, and
had been judged one of the favorites to win it all, so he of course had made his way
over to watch her practice a bit the night before the tourney had kicked off.
Judging by the way she practiced, the tales were all true. Though she was a golem,
her gaze was razor sharp, and her movements were precise, with no wasted movement.
She ran through her styles, and sparred for a crowd of men, who looked like vultures
to Snake. They were people who would likely be betting on her to win, Noble often
called those people investors. Snake studied their faces as they watched her. They
were men who had the look in their eye like they had a secret about a "sure thing".
He had seen that look many times before, it was the same here as it was at the
chariot races, or a game of chance--when a man thinks he's found that sure thing,
it's tough to hide his glee. Snake had thought for a minute to join them and bet
some of his hard earned money against himself and on her as he continued watching her
fluid motions, and her sparring partners inability to lay a sword on her. Word had
spread that Doc Steele her manager had subjected her to arcane treatments to give her
that amazing speed and her incredible dexterity. Also, that her skin was unnaturally
thick, and even bladed weapons weren't able to cut her. Those things concerned
Snake, but a few things gave him hope and caused him to bet his money on himself
instead. She was a full foot shorter than he was, and he felt his height would give
him an advantage. The kicker though, came as she finished up her practice session
and mingled amongst some of the "investors". Her demeanor was carefree, and she
seemed to almost border on being too gleeful to be a serious warrior. She joked with
some of the men, and laughed freely, embracing Doc Steele, and courteously thanking
him for being her manager, causing a smile to spread on his face. The grizzled
manager that many considered to be unapproachable was obviously very fond of this
particular warrior, and likely had a lot vested on her winning. Snake hoped that
this emotion she exhibited meant she was not as strong of heart as he who had endured
many hardships on his road here. Snake's recollections were broken up by a knock at
the door.
"You ready?" Comfortably Numb asked, peeking his head in the door. Snake caught
a glimpse of the tarp, and on cue, it changed to Numb's visage. "It's time for your
fifteen minutes," Numb prodded.
Snake smiled at his friend who now dwelled in Primus trying to make a name for
himself there. Snake stood and said, "Just because you are a one hit wonder doesn't
mean I am. I've got at least thirty minutes coming to me!". He grabbed his
longsword and his spare before grabbing his cap. The sword, like the armor, seemed
to be in pretty good shape, and Urbane Elf, another of Noble's Primus warriors had
sharpened his longswords to a razor's edge. "Any final words of wisdom?" Snake asked
of his much smaller counterpart.
Numb thought for a moment, and scratched his bald head. "Yeah--I do," he said
before pausing, "Golems are creatures of habit, remember that, and attack from
different angles so she'll have to change her defense." With that, he departed,
leaving Snake alone in the training room. He placed his cap firmly on his head, and
walked out the chamber door to his fate.
Once in the arena, it did not seem the same as the hundred or so times he been
in one before. The midday sun was bright, and high in the sky. The way it glinted
off her spearpoint might be troublesome if it caught his eyesight. She was walking
next to the arena wall, waving to well-wishers, and embracing Doc one last time
before the fight was to begin. He started to sweat almost immediately under the
armor, due to the day's heat, and the stress he was under. As the fight began, he
was unhappily surprised that she was incredibly nimble, and was able to lock his
longsword up keeping him from attacking, though she could not get a good thrust in
either. Finally, he pushed her a bit off balance and had the chance to strike. At
that second, time seemed to slow down as he considered how to attack. Like most
warriors, he had a favorite attack that he called his "snakebite". The move had
earned him his name right after Noble had signed him on. Because of his great size,
he wiggled his upper body and arms when he used his snakebite attack, to make it
difficult for his foe to know precisely where the attack would come from. It had won
him many fights in his career, yet he decided against using it this time and instead
lashed out at Wiggler, trying to hit her in the chest. She seemed to sense exactly
where his attack was heading, and she dodged easily to the side throwing him off
balance, as her spear recoiled ready to strike. He knew he was in trouble before his
attack was even done. Her spear came crashing into his abdomen, nearly piercing it,
and she had to pull hard to dislodge it. As she pulled it out, Snake awkwardly fell
to his knees, and he looked up to see her smiling like a schoolgirl at recess.
Luckily for him, the recoil from pulling her spear out of his armor caused her to
stumble a bit as well. Snake used his sword as a crutch as he leapt to his feet
before she could bring her second attack, then brought his sword to the ready. She
was charging again, looking right at his mid-section, undoubtedly trying to pierce
the armor through it's now weakened hide. As the spear came flying towards him, he
dropped to his knees and threw his head back so hard his cap nearly flew off. The
spear went whistling over his head by inches, and again he saw her spearpoint twinkle
with sunlight as it withdrew. He jumped back to his feet and threw his right
shoulder forward in a feint. Like so many before, she took the bait. He undulated
his shoulders, moving his sword hilt back in forth, mesmerizing her just for a
moment, then ducked slightly and swung from a much lower guard than he though she
could defend with the thin spear. The sword found it's target striking her in the
right elbow, causing her to yell out in pain. More than that, his sheer mass had
bullied her into the sand, and he jumped over to her to make sure she would not have
the chance to get back up. A few more thrusts with his longsword, and it was over.
He offered her his hand, and she took it allowing him to help her to her feet. Right
then, Noble's warriors stormed the arena, putting the very sizable Snake on their
collective shoulders and carried him around the sands in a victory celebration.
That night, Snake contemplated his future. Would he continue his career and
fight in Primus, or would he use this chance to leave the arena life and try for
something more simple? Winning the tournament assured that he would always be able
to train others, or maybe even manage his own squad one day. He wondered how
Wiggler, and more importantly her manager was taking her defeat. He made a mental
note to try and look her up in the future and see how she was doing, though it was
very likely she would continue her career and end up in the top of Primus someday.
Either way, Snake smiled in the dark, enjoying his "fifteen minutes" and went to bed
contemplating what he could do to follow up on his great achievement.
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade
Hello, Darkholm!
Turn four of my reign. Where is Kylie!?! Come on, girl, how are you gonna talk
trash and then miss the turn! I'll give you this turn's TV for one more chance at
redemption.
Desiree, if you and the Commission want to see sparks fly go ahead and merge Andorak
with Darkholm. As long as Andorak is the arena that is closed. Warriors were
bleeding in the sands of Darkholm before these Andorian managers had taught their
first warrior to aim at non-vitals. As a representative of the top team in both
arenas, I hope our request will at least be considered by the Commission. I dare you
to do it. Those guys in Andorak would lose their minds. It would be hysterical to
watch them stammer away in the ads and demand this and that from the commission.
Bring it on!
Wiggler, Legion4
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Minions of the Dark Federation, I greet you warmly!
That's what the Andorians used to call it, you know. The Dark Federation. Yes,
all right, they have those elven and Vannish bloodlines and so they run to blondes,
while we enjoy the swarthy good looks of our Rirorni forerunners. But you know
that's not what the Andorians meant when they called us the Dark Federation. They
meant that we're BAD. Mind you, there is just one country in the region with an
assassins' guild. A country where there was so much employment for professional
murderers that they were able to band together and set rules for themselves to
regulate their market and to command higher wages. And that country, of course...
runs to blondes. Heh. Sure, I'd like to see the Commission merge Andorak and
Darkholm. It would be like merging an ice cube with a kettle of lava. Honestly,
though I don't think it's going to happen. I was speculating wildly, that's all.
I am willing to be bad. Let's all be bad, shall we? Just to give them a little
thrill? How about bumping up those kill desires?
There was just one TV challenge this turn, at least one that got through, and it
was the title fight as well. Our lovely Keeper of the Runeblade, WIGGLER (18-8088)
(37-6-1,374) of THUNDR + LITENING TV challenged KYLIE (18-6057) (34-28-1,229) of
UNTOUCHABLES. WIGGLER devastated KYLIE in an action packed 1 minute mismatched
Challenge Title fight. Wiggler had been hoping to fight Kylie, and she got her wish.
Oh, let's see...Thundr + Litening was avoided by Cementia. Nicely done.
No one was killed this turn. Not so nicely done. You must try harder!
CRACK IS CHEAP (82-18422) (34-24-0,177) of NEGATIVE CASH FLOW fought MINOS (21-
5805) (19-13-2,114) of SONS OF SATAN. CRACK IS CHEAP was vanquished by MINOS in an
exciting 1 minute brutal one-sided fray. Crack Is remains our overall popularity
leader. Tsk.
It's getting pathetic, how long a fight will win the crowd's "scum sympathy"
vote. DUSKY JAWFISH (18-6978) (59-60-1,219) of BIG MEAN FISH fought ONE A DAY (98-
799) (36-31-3,207) of MY DRUGS. DUSKY JAWFISH viciously subdued ONE A DAY in an
action packed 9 minute gruesome melee. This was actually a very hard-fought victory
for One a Day. There was no scumming.
Yes, Bozo should do better if he can. But maybe he's doing the best he can. It
is not really the "Delarquan way" to make excuses for warriors who lose, but...in
each of our fights, someone loses. Come on. MANUTE BOL (5-4233) (19-14-0,71) of
LARGE LOSERS fought BOZO (42-4016) (22-40-0,60) of CLOWNING AROUND. MANUTE BOL
overpowered BOZO in a 1 minute one-sided duel. Poor Bozo is our least popular
warrior this turn. Yes, he doesn't look that great against the star quality of most
of our fine Delarquan combatants, but I would like to see any member of that super-
critical pack of spectators try to take him out.
Well, there were only thirty-five fights today. Not that much to talk about,
really. I suppose we WOULD have more to talk about if Darkholm merged with Andorak.
(shudder)
Should I offer any unsolicited advice today? Hmm. Yes. On the whole,
forgiveness may be a good thing because it brings the forgiver peace of mind, but
there is a point beyond which it becomes a bad thing. It depends, I think, on
whether the person who harmed you did it knowingly and has been making a habit of
such behavior. Maybe the person who harmed you will keep right on harming you if
they are not slapped down hard. Maybe they will harm others. At some point,
forgiveness becomes irresponsible.
Until next turn, may you maintain a healthy balance in all things. And remember
to practice even moderation in moderation! Go overboard once in a while!
