Wiggler turned up the collar of her jacket as she crossed the arena courtyard to
the Black Tower. It was foggy and more than a little cold in Willow Beach this
night. Somewhere out towards the beach, a bell dinged twice. Then another bell
sounded a deeper note. That was a boat coming in, she thought. They ring twice when
they're coming in, and the bell on shore rings once. What's a boat doing out on the
Lake this late?
Before she could knock on the tower door, it swung open and a rough voice said,
"Come on in, Squiggler."
"That's Wiggler," she said, glancing at the small man with the red bandanna tied
over his hair. "Call me Lara." She adjusted her collar again and fluffed out her
red hair.
He smiled, exposing a full set of golden teeth. "I haven't used my given name
since I took to the sea. My friends call me Grinny."
"Oh, I heard you were going along on this...whatever we're doing."
"She's about to tell us what it's all about," he said. "She went to get the
teakettle."
On cue, Desiree reentered the room, carrying a tea tray and followed by a
worried-looking young man in a wizard hat. "Tea?" she asked, looking unsurprised
when both gladiators shook their heads no. "Brennan, you'd better have a cup."
The young man gratefully accepted the beverage that she poured, after which she
took a dark bottle from under her desk, filled two shot glasses from it, and offered
them to her other guests.
Wiggler rolled her eyes as the Tricoran Gold brandy filled her head with its
vapors.
"Thanks for coming," Desiree said. "I'll get right to the point. Brennan,
here, is from the Stronghold Academy. Something was stolen from one of their
laboratories, and the Academy needs you two to go and get it back."
"What was stolen?" asked Wiggler.
The young wizard looked exasperated. "You don't want to know that," he said.
"Yes, I do," Wiggler insisted.
"Me, too," added Gringold.
"Actually," said Desiree, "so would I. How are they going to look for it if
they don't know what it is?"
"You need to leave the room, then," the young man said.
"What? I can't even know the category of thing it is?"
"I'm sorry, no, it's too dangerous."
Picking up the tea tray, Desiree left the room.
Brennan looked at Gringold, and then at Gringold. "Knowledge," he said. "The
thief stole knowledge."
"Like, a book or a letter?" Wiggler asked.
"No. A tablet."
"Paper or stone?" said Gringold.
"Not that kind of tablet," said the young wizard. "It's in pill form. You
know, you take it with a glass or water?"
Wiggler said, "Don't you think he probably ate it by now, then?"
The two gladiators were standing on either side of Brennan so that he had to
keep looking back and forth between them. "He was probably sent by someone. He's
probably taking it to them."
"So," said Wiggler, "how dangerous is this knowledge?"
"Or rather," said the former sailor, "how valuable is it? What will you give us
to get it back?"
"I'm asking you on behalf of the Stronghold Academy," said Brennan, "which
means, I'm asking on behalf of Lady Greywand herself. I'm sure she'll give you an
appropriate reward, if a reward is all that matters to you." All of Gringold's teeth
were gold, which was his savings account. But he'd been thinking that if he got his
hands on more money, he'd have some of them set with diamonds.
Wiggler, at first, wasn't as interested in a reward, since her father, Doc
Steele, was rich. Then it occurred to her that a reward from Lady Greywand could be
something like those tourney prizes she hadn't won for him. "So it's important, this
knowledge? So the reward should be a big thing?"
"Of course, it's important!" Brennan responded. "That's all I can say!" He set
his cup of tea on Desiree's desk, since the tea tray had gone. "The thief was a very
thin man, pale with dark hair, dressed all in black. He was last seen entering
Willow Beach and it is believed that he'll try to get a boat to the mainland."
"That'd be stupid," said Gringold. "It's always foggy on the lake but you
couldn't see your hand in front of your face tonight. No way to stay in the safe
sailing lanes that are protected from the lake monsters."
"There is a boat out on the water!" Wiggler said suddenly. "I heard it! It was
just coming in to dock."
Gringold grabbed his black woolen pea jacket from the back of a chair. "Then
let's go, girl!"

Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade
Hello, Darkholm!
Turn ten should be the final turn of my reign. I doubt the commission will let me
fight here again after my experience in the Contenders tourney. I did send in a
challenge to Gringold on the off chance that they are slow in shipping me out to
Primus.
The Contenders tourney was a fierce competition, so I am proud to have managed a 4-3
in my first attempt. I look forward to learning from some amazingly talented Aimed
Blows that seem to dominate the top of that tourney. It was even my honor to take a
loss from the eventual TC Reaper, a fellow alliance mate. I have a long way to go in
that tourney.
Gringold -- You brought a smile to my face with your bold challenge in the personal
ads. Alas, I believe I will never get to honor that request but I am pleased that
you made the gesture. Good luck with the rest of your Darkholm career.
Goodbye and good luck to all my fellow Delarquans. I'll see you in Primus one day
perhaps.

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Good morning, riders of the windswept plain!
...Well, that's what we used to be anyway. I'm sure we would be still if we all
had horses, and if there were any good windswept plains on this Isle. But it's all
hilly and rocky and full of grazing sheep, except for the city bits.
No one avoided anyone, and there were no TV challenges although we certainly do
have Tournament Victors here after the recent tourney. So I suspect that this is the
turn when everyone is mixed up about who's still here that they can challenge, and so
on.
No one was killed. Hmm. I know Galen, over in Talahya, offers rewards to
warriors who fight hard enough to die. Maybe I should start doing that? No, that
rewards failure. I'll reward killers.
The title fight was quite interesting. WIGGLER (18-8088) (43-6-1,487) of THUNDR
+ LITENING fought DOC STEELE (18-6010) (69-133-6,219) of ARROGANCE. WIGGLER
overpowered DOC STEELE in a popular 1 minute gruesome mismatched Title brawl. You
know, I think it was personal on Wiggler's part. However her father, Doc Steele, may
feel about the Arrogance team, she mentioned to me that she doesn't like the idea of
a gladiator taking her father's name. And she was quick to let him know it. And
thank you, Wiggler, for the column. I'll watch your Primus career with interest.
Doc Steele, surprisingly, was this turn's most popular warrior despite losing.
Despite his far greater experience, he was perceived as the underdog.
Kung Pao Kitty was most challenged. It was a fight that made me hungry. SUSHI
SLINGER (96-1399) (12-2-3,60) of SEA DOGS challenged KUNG PAO KITTY (97-1310) (4-15-
3,61) of CUTE & KINDA DEADLY. SUSHI SLINGER was unbelievably bested by KUNG PAO
KITTY in a 3 minute Challenge duel. Well done, Kitty.
Of course, our overall popularity leader remains Crack is Cheap. CRACK IS CHEAP
(82-18422) (36-28-0,176) of NEGATIVE CASH FLOW fought LOCAL CONSTABLE (104-22) (0-0-
0,181) of ARENA STAND-INS. CRACK IS CHEAP was viciously subdued by LOCAL CONSTABLE
in a popular 4 minute duel. Nobody likes that constable.
Our least popular warrior this turn is Pud 126. YUENGLING (82-16265) (23-12-
1,144) of LOCAL BEER fought PUD 126 (82-22024) (29-15-0,115) of PUDS AGAIN 6.
YUENGLING demolished PUD 126 in a 1 minute one-sided conflict. It's not that Pud is
a bad warrior, but he was hung over or perhaps still drunk, and looked pretty inept
on the sands in that fight.
It's a very short report, but then again, it was a pretty short fight day. I
hope to see more people here next turn; you should all be sorted out from the tourney
by then. So until that day, keep alert! Well, you can sleep of course, but...you
know what I mean.
