It was only about three blocks to the dock, but Gringold released his horse's reins from the hitching post and swung up onto the saddle. "Hey!" said Wiggler. The former sailor glanced down at the pretty redhead. It looked like she hadn't brought a horse. He stretched his arm down; she grabbed it and jumped up behind him. It wasn't a very big horse but it was chunky with muscle, and took off like a rocket when Gringold pressed his heels into its sides. Wiggler flung her arms around his waist. There were several fishing boats tied to small docks, but they showed no lights and by what Gringold could see in the fog, their sails were furled. No suicidal idiots among the Willow Beach fishermen tonight, then. But one boat was tied to the larger dock and there were lanterns on it, and people moving around. It was no fishing boat, however. It was bigger, a steam wheeler, probably that tour boat that came by here sometimes. "Let's check there," Wiggler said, echoing his own thoughts. Gringold tied his horse to a tree that was up a bit from the beach--no point exposing it to any potential danger from a long-armed lake monster--and ran to catch up with Wiggler, who was already on her way up the gangplank of the Naiad's Dream. "Did a boat just leave?" she asked the first person who appeared out of the fog: A huge, lumbering, unbelievably ugly man whose grayish skin was crisscrossed with thin white scars. He smiled and replied in a surprisingly cultured voice, "Yes, a fishing boat just now set sail. It was a very dangerous thing to do, in this fog. Why do you ask?" "Did you see who was on it?" Gringold asked, stepping onto the deck behind Wiggler. The gray man nodded his head. "It was Bert Heysapper, one of the local fishermen. He should have known better." "Did he have a passenger?" Gringold persisted. "Not that I saw, not even his mate, but then the fog...and someone could have been in the cabin, too. Why are you asking? What's going on?" "It's official Greywand business," Wiggler said. "We need to commandeer your boat to go after him." Gringold caught his breath. First of all he didn't want to be out on the Lake tonight; Greywand needed your body in order to resurrect you and if you were eaten by lake monsters you were pretty much s.o.l. And second, he sympathized with the gray man's reaction to the idea of having his boat commandeered. But Wiggler was right. It was official Greywand business and the fate of the world could be at stake. The fellow seemed to take it all right, though. He turned his head and called out, "Kit! Up for an adventure?" "Always!" came the answer from the fog. "Wake the fire elemental and get us up a head of steam. We've got a boat to chase!" The gray man looked at Gringold and Wiggler. "That's what we're doing, right?" "Right," said Wiggler. Gringold said, "Er...is this boat big enough to hold off the lake monsters?" "Only the little ones," the gray man said. "But she's got wards on her hull, just like the Tourneytown ferry. They don't attack. Just don't lean on the railing or fall in the water and you'll be fine." "Do you need to see any identification?" Wiggler asked. "Oh, no, you're gladiators. Either you're on a mission or this is a prank, and either way it'll be fun. Follow me, I'll show you your seats." The gray man turned and lumbered over to a ladder, then stopped and looked back at them. "The observation deck is up here...oh, but you won't be able to see anything except fog from up there. You might be better off at the railing. So you think Bert had a passenger and that's who you're after? What's it all about?" "It's on a need to know basis," Wiggler said. She smiled. "Sorry. Oh, and if we catch up to them, we'll want the person alive." "And preferably dry," Gringold added, thinking that the stolen tablet might be water soluble. "I doubt they'd be headed to Bert's normal fishing spot. Did you see which way the boat went?" "Bert would be trying to keep it in the warded lanes," said the gray man. "Come on up to the bow, that's where the wheel is and it's also the best place for you to watch from." He led the way forward, pausing along the way to release moorings. Gringold thought the bow was an odd place to steer a ship from; but then he remembered that the Lake of Mists would put different requirements on any craft. Unnaturally thick fogs were quite common here. If you wanted to see where the boat was going, especially if your only guides were the orange and white lane buoys, you had to be up front and not too far from the water. The big gray man positioned himself at the wheel, then shouted cheerfully into a tube, "Ready when you are, Kit!" The Naiad's Dream lurched, then surged slowly away from shore. "How do you back up?" Gringold asked, since there would be virtually no visibility in the other direction, even in clear weather. "There's a second wheel in the stern," the gray man replied. There were benches around the bow, facing outward. Gringold sat in the frontmost one and Wiggler sat next to him. "Wish I'd brought my fishing tackle," the former sailor said. Then the thought faded as he began to concentrate on looking ahead, into drifting vapor that was almost like a thinner layer of water. It wasn't ordinary fog. It seemed to respond to his imagination. The way it swirled, it seemed to form shapes, even entire scenes...his years as a pirate on the Trier, Queen Gemra's dungeon...that curvy bit of mist there reminded him of Gemra herself, the shapely Brat Queen. He sighed. Lost in very different thoughts, Wiggler gazed into the mist, trying to keep her thoughts focused. She saw tourney fights. She saw herself losing, and her father's disappointment. It was painful and humiliating; she turned away. She met the tall pilot's eyes. "You know," she said, "this is a pretty big boat and I bet somebody could have snuck aboard tonight and you wouldn't know it." "That's true," he said. "I have to stay at the wheel, but you can search if you want." "I think I will." She got up, drew her sword, and walked back to the ladder to the observation deck. The sword was a gift from her father, Doc Steele. She couldn't use it in the arena, of course, since it wasn't a regulation size or metal or even one of the standard sword types, plus of course it was enchanted. It was longer than a shortsword but shorter than a longsword, heavier than an epee but lighter than anything else; it curved slightly and had a bronze hue with iridescent glimmers. More than anything it reminded her of a pheasant's tail feather, except of course for the hilt which was of carved, translucent jade, and the guard which was three curving spikes of the same bronzy alloy. It was a beautiful weapon and it could cut stone without losing its edge. Well, you wouldn't want to cut a LOT of stone with it, but you could if you had to. She walked up the ladder (stairs really) to the observation deck, and went down the aisle, cautiously peering between and under the benches. It wasn't a very dark night. There was a full moon, which was faintly visible through the fog from up here. The fog picked up the moonlight and used it to soften and lighten all the shadows. No one but her was on the observation deck. Back down on the main deck, she ran quickly around the deck, checking behind any piles of supplies or big coiled ropes that she saw, then went inside the superstructure. Living quarters, a couple of guest staterooms. Then down another ladder into the guts of the ship. The engine room. For an instant she saw an orange-furred woman curled up like a kitten on a big cushion, reading a book; then the woman looked up in surprise when Wiggler entered, saw the drawn sword, somersaulted backwards and drew a blade of her own, a worn shortsword with a barbed tip. "Are you Kit?" Wiggler asked. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. I'm searching for a possible stowaway." She sheathed her sword and extended her hand. "I'm Lara...or Wiggler is my arena name." "Khirza," said the cat woman, taking her hand. "Nice sword. I haven't seen anyone. Who are you looking for?" "I was told he's very thin, pale with dark hair, and dressed all in black. That's all I know. It's Lady Greywand's business and he's to be taken alive. And preferably dry." "Well, there are lots of hidey-holes down here. The storage rooms are pretty full of junk." Khirza glanced at the boiler which dominated the engine room. "I should keep an eye on this in case Fet needs full speed or reverse or something, in a hurry. But if you need help, just yell." Her slit-pupiled gaze swept over Wiggler's lithe form, and the sword. "You probably won't need help, though. Oh, but you'll need a lantern. Help yourself." She nodded toward the one she'd been reading by, then picked up a spare, lifted the glass shield and held it to the window of the boiler. "Light this for me, sweetie?" A thin jet of flame shot from the boiler and lit the wick. Khirza picked up her book--it looked like a romance novel--and sat down on the cushion again. With a smile and a nod, Wiggler took the offered lantern and stepped out of the engine room. The storage areas belowdecks on the Naiad's Dream were pitch black, and so the lantern was necessary, but it was not ideal for searching dark corners. In the close quarters she had to hold it in front of her, and she could hardly see anything past the glare of it. One with a shielded back would have been better, but this wasn't that kind. She was easing her way down a narrow aisle between stacked crates. Wiggler was a genetically altered gladiator with reactions so fast that she could catch arrows in midair. She heard the crossbow release, but--half blinded by the lantern--couldn't catch it in time. In her attempt to catch it, though, she had retained the presence of mind not to drop the lantern. The last thing any of them needed was to be on a burning boat in the middle of the Lake of Mists. So instead, she dropped her sword, and barely caught the tail end of the bolt as it plunged into her chest. The shock of it would have taken down most people, but she was a gladiator, trained to take fearsome wounds and keep fighting. She set the lantern on a crate, caught the sword under her toe and flipped it into the air, and caught it. No attack came during that scant second. She heard someone whispering unintelligibly as he tried to do something that rattled and clinked a bit; reloading the crossbow no doubt. The bolt had come from ahead, slightly left, and up high. Now that the light wasn't in her eyes she could dimly see a man lying on top of the highest crates, squeezed in really between the crates and the ceiling. "I wouldn't," Wiggler said, leaping forward and swinging her sword to shear off a corner of one of the crates he was on, to show him what she would do to him. The chunk of wood fell away, and, surprisingly, a cloud of locusts came flying out. She threw her arm over her face. In that blinding moment the man shoved his way past her. Even so, with her lightning reflexes she would have stopped him, except that a locust flew into her mouth and she nearly choked on it. By the time she had ejected the insect, he was gone. The label on the damaged crate, which she glimpsed before she turned and gave chase, said "Stronghold Academy," which explained a lot. Some student wizard was probably planning to put a horde of locusts in a magic lamp or something. Gringold was still staring ahead, straining his eyes to try and catch a glimpse of the fugitive fishing boat through the mist. The Naiad's Dream didn't have one of those pointy bits that stuck out from the rounded front of the main deck; it wasn't needed to hold a corner of a nonexistent sail, and it would impair the pilot's view. There was a figurehead, a rather depraved looking nymph, but she was affixed to the hull below eye level. Gringold only knew about her because the gray man, Fet, had pointed her out. There was a railing, though, made of sturdy wood and about four inches wide on top. Just as Gringold was turning to see about those running footsteps, just as Fet was saying "What the--" a man leaped past Grin onto the railing. He was thin, pale as a ghost, with wild black hair. His right hand was clenched in a fist and held against his chest. His left arm flailed for balance. "Catch him!" cried Wiggler, running up behind. She was moving rather slowly, and looked almost as pale as the man she was after. "She'll never get it back!" said the fugitive, actually leaping to one side on the narrow railing as Gringold made a grab for him. "She doesn't deserve it!" He held his clenched fist high. "The secret of the magical breakdown on Ghea!" "Don't let him fall in the water," Wiggler said. "Don't let him drop that tablet." She was approaching cautiously now, but there was a stagger in her step. Gringold said, "You don't want to be dropping something so valuable, my friend. Just give it here and I'll keep it safe for you." He was moving towards the man on the railing, but slowly, trying not to scare him. The man said, "You have no idea what I want," and opened his hand to reveal a gleaming blue ovoid, then with a triumphant smile, suddenly put it into his mouth and swallowed. His smile held for a second or two, then faded into a look of dismay. "Oh my!" he said. And then he turned and stepped off. Gringold and Wiggler lunged, each of them catching one of the man's legs--the same one. It came off, and the man fell, leaving them clutching a wooden leg and a pair of pants. There was a loud splash. --- to be continued -- THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade Hello, Darkholm! Obviously I was wrong about my last turn here. So I'll try again and say that turn eleven of my reign will be my last. I think my challenges did not get in last turn as we were pretty late with them. So I got a match up with one of these "Doc Steele" namesake warriors, which was really fun because that does actually sort of bug me that the commission let all these wannabe's name themselves after my Dad. Doc thinks it is flattering, so I guess I'll get used to. In this case, A-SOP is a top notch lady, so I'll cut her some slack. Desiree -- I hope you continue your efforts to liven up Darkholm. Good luck. Obsessive -- Loudmouth? I really hope the commission forgets to move us again; I'd like to make you eat those words. I'll keep an eye out in Primus for your arrival. Thundr+Litening is team 616 in Primus. You may want to write that down somewhere to make it easier to fill out your avoids when you arrive. Tolais -- Good luck in Darkholm and enjoy your retirement. Drop by Primus when they induct you and say hello. Goodbye, again. Wiggler, Legion4 REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER Hi! Well, our Tourney Victors got their challenges in gear and that's a good thing. But I don't think the split has happened yet. I think it's due to happen immediately after this turn's fights. We'll probably lose Wiggler and a number of others. Let's take a look at our TV fights first: DR DAZZLE (57-4485) (90-38-2,241) of PEPPER PRACTICE II TV challenged OBSESSIVE (58-2447) (67-60-1,257) of ELEMENTS OF PSI. DR DAZZLE devastated OBSESSIVE in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Obsessive was our most challenged warrior. GOHAN (18-8449) (30-15-1,152) of WASTELAND TV challenged MUTINEER (7-2607) (31- 19-2,161) of SEA DOGS. GOHAN vanquished MUTINEER in an exciting 2 minute uneven Challenge battle. CRACK IS CHEAP (82-18422) (36-29-0,175) of NEGATIVE CASH FLOW TV challenged SCHYLER (6-4866) (69-114-1,182) of THE LADY'S LIST. CRACK IS CHEAP was savagely defeated by SCHYLER in a 5 minute Challenge duel. Of course, Crack remains our overall popularity leader. Losing fights doesn't seem to affect that, just so the fights are exciting; and Crack's fights are always full of action. STRAFE (82-11158) (39-18-0,100) of BLACK PRIMERS TV challenged COOKIE FOR THE SOUL (6-6002) (17-2-0,52) of HOLE IN THE WALL. STRAFE savagely defeated COOKIE FOR THE SOUL in an exciting 2 minute Challenge fight. Here's what Zontani said about this fight: STRAFE must really be harboring a grudge against the HOLE IN THE WALL guild! Merciless, 48 challenged down COOKIE FOR THE SOUL points this week to duel with he. Hmm. Now, on to our title fight. And I'm surprised it wasn't a TV challenge. I haven't seen the tourney results. Wiggler, you did TV, didn't you? WIGGLER (18- 8088) (44-6-1,498) of THUNDR + LITENING challenged ASSAULT (82-2043) (76-43-1,218) of JOKA MASHER. WIGGLER devastated ASSAULT in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge Title duel. And by the way, thank you for writing another column this turn, Wiggler. One warrior was killed this turn. STUPID SEXY FLANDERS (42-3836) (34-23-0,205) of I'M SO SEXY fought SMUNCH (18-8337) (24-4-0,154) of THUNDR + LITENING. STUPID SEXY FLANDERS was slaughtered by SMUNCH in a 1 minute one-sided match. I sent a bottle of champagne to Smunch but then I felt bad for Flanders and send a bottle of the bubbly to him or her as well (sorry from where I was sitting I couldn't tell). It's bubble bath. Trust me, for a resurrection hangover a nice hot bath will do a lot more good than a bottle of booze. This turn's favorite warrior is Link, who is also our top Basher. RED FUSION (6-5480) (45-17-0,201) of IT'S NEW! fought LINK (6-5144) (37-69-2,188) of SUPER BASH BROTHERS. RED FUSION was viciously subdued by LINK in a popular 6 minute brutal fight. Well done, Link. And our least popular warrior was the winner in what I believe was this turn's longest fight. KUNG PAO KITTY (97-1310) (5-15-3,72) of CUTE & KINDA DEADLY fought UBER GOOBER (82-26198) (19-19-0,41) of NUTS. KUNG PAO KITTY was luckily beaten by UBER GOOBER in a popular 8 minute gory duel. Oh gee, that's not much to talk about, is it? Just as well; I don't know about you but the last few days have left me rather tired. The harvest feast and what not.
