                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Hullo!

Here we are again! *smiles brightly* Oh right -- I'm supposed to say something
about this turn's fights. There were fifteen of them, which is the exact same number
as last time. But these were more exciting!
For example: Someone posted a challenge! I am thrilled to see a sign of life
in this arena! ENDER (69-1066) (26-25-4,193) of XENOCIDE challenged ARSONIST ART
(39-3325) (49-44-0,203) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT. ENDER was unbelievably bested by
ARSONIST ART in a 2 minute bloody Challenge fight. Arsonist Art was, and remains,
our top Total Parry. Ender isn't our top anything except he is currently my personal
favorite. Moreover, he is obviously one of those gung-ho chaps who always volunteer
for adventures! He just forgot. But that's all right -- I signed him up, anyway.
There were NO stand-ins required this time around. Isn't that nice? Which
means that exactly thirty warriors competed. That's a nice, round number. Naturally
one would like to see a few more, but it's... intimate. Yes, that's what Darkholm
is. An intimate arena.
Let's have a look at our title fight. GATEWAY (82-15631) (90-56-1,331) of
ATTACK OF THE CLONES fought ROB A. REE (39-3241) (55-44-1,213) of CRIMINAL ELEMENT.
GATEWAY vanquished ROB A. REE in an exciting 1 minute uneven Title battle. Hmm. I
can understand Gateway not wanting to challenge since his three options (Rugen the
Jellyfish, Cooler, and Rob A. Ree) would all have been down-challenges. And they all
have winning records, which is pleasing to see. One could wish that one of them had
challenged Gateway, displaying a degree of ambition comparable to Ender's.
NEWKIRK (7-5156) (18-7-1,94) of THE ROCKERS fought HELENE JUSTE (5-4875) (15-15-
0,33) of THE MIDDLE WAY 5. NEWKIRK murdered HELENE JUSTE in a 1 minute mismatched
match. Olaf Modeen said "Many a warrior has met his fate in a drunken stupor," but I
don't think that is the case with Miss Juste. It wasn't really her fate, anyway,
since she's back, albeit with a resurrection head. That spyreporter in Talahya sends
resurrection gifts. Should I? I don't mind, if it's a young lady.
I'm going to close this report now, because I'm meeting Ender up at Eve's Palace
Casino. We're going to lay to rest those ghosts of parties past, so someone can
reopen the place.

And so, until next time, cheerio!

Malic of Talcama

                    + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ X ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

Where Shoreline Road climbed up from Willow Beach into the rough terrain of the
Isle of the Eye, Eve's Palace Casino stood on a grassy meadow between the road and
the drop-off to the lake. A flagstoned driveway led to the stairway and the wide
double doors--once, a smooth ride for the carriages of wealthy managers. Now it was
choked with weeds, the stones broken. A shutter banged, blown by the winter wind.
Ender stood there at the start of the ruined drive, dubiously eyeing the
building. It was two stories tall, its proportions gracious... built of wood, though
it had a marble facade. The years had been unkind to the structure. The porches
sagged, and the roof had lost half its shingles.
He'd just run up the hill, but he wasn't breathing hard--Ender was in shape. He
was a man of medium height, his dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. The scars on
his face showed that he had led a rough life long before becoming a gladiator. His
expression wasn't grim though. He liked parties, gambling, and pretty women. This
ghost-casino still had an aura of those things about it. It radiated a kind of
welcome, even though it was supposedly haunted.
"What ho!" said a cheerful voice. Ender turned, surprised to find that he'd
been studying the casino with such ferocious attention as to miss the arrival of a
horse and rider.
Malic was a youngish, tallish, rather skinny man who looked quite elegant in an
afternoon suit of gray velvet (gray, of course, because he thought the casino was
likely to be dusty). He smiled at Ender as he dismounted. "Great day for it, eh
what?" (It was cloudy, threatening to storm.) "We couldn't properly appreciate a
haunted house if it were bright and sunny, could we? Of course, we SHOULD have met
here at midnight or something, but I've got a party to go to later."
Leading his horse, he started up the drive, with the gladiator striding next to
him. "So, have you seen any ghosts yet? Heard anything spooky?"
"No," Ender said. "It looks like it used to be a really nice place. Who owned
it?"
"Ah--I asked around about that. Eve. Last name unknown. I think she came from
Sunset Island. She was a gladiator, and her manager was the Master of Anime. By all
reports, she was a great beauty. No one knows what happened to her. Maybe she went
on to Primus, eh? Where gladiators go and never return." He tried to make it sound
spooky, but it didn't. Ender thought going to Primus was a good goal.
As they approached the dilapidated structure, there came from inside it a high-
pitched ripple of hysterical laughter. Malic jumped. His horse jumped as well, then
jerked the reins out of his hand and galloped away.
Malic of Talcama drew in a deep, rather shaky breath. "Oh! I daresay that was
a woman. Don't you think? Was it a live woman, perhaps in need of... oh...
something to steady her nerves? Or was it a ghost?"
The gladiator pondered that question. "Ghost, I think," he said finally.
"Let's go see."

Hagar -- Ooooh, cool, more Horrible! If I could remember the name of your dog, I'd
ask after him, but... probably got hit on the head once too often. -- Katirona Murh
P.S. But don't you think the bit where you knocked me down and then raised your
weapon over your head and brought it down again was a little... histrionic?
Melodramatic? Unnecessary, even? It isn't like I was going to leap up and continue
fighting. When I'm down, I'm done.

Eek the Cat -- Ha. Ha. -- Helene Juste

Alfjar -- Yeah, I know, it's "elf-spear" or something along that line, but it still
seems to me more like a jar for storing elves. -- Jammy Larke

Worse. It's a jar for storing Alfs. Furry long-nosed ones.

Thunder Bug -- Ick, fishy stuff. No thanks. -- Jeri Lough

Tyr -- That rounds out an oh-fer on our part. I wonder if Jorja is ready to let us
retire? The "entry-level puds" we were supposed to fight haven't showed up, so why
should we stay? -- Pendru Rost

Malic's author -- Count us OUT. We do not want to be involved in an adventure of any
kind. -- the Middle Way
P.S. Draft the Innkeeper's Son and the Drunken Fisherman.

Bah. The innkeeper won't allow his son to do it, and the Drunken Fisherman is
     off on a binge somewhere.

??Radar?? -- Wow. I really didn't expect to win. In spite of your record being
almost as sad as mine, you seem to be a pretty good fighter. Oh well. Buy you a
drink? -- Crysoprase

Kalidor -- Hey, you knocked me down once, and hit me five times. I hit you once, and
you give up? What the heck? All right, I did cut your arm off. But you were using
a one-handed weapon, so you could still fight just fine. How come you quit? --
