THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade I'm not literary, you know? At all. I don't mind holding the Runeblade, which is kind of cool, or sitting in the special chair, which needs to be reupholstered, but... write something? Ew. I'm Stassia, from Sibikhas, half Shagornan elf. *twirls finger in air* Being a gladiator was really hard, at the start. Sibikhas was a tough arena in those days, and not all of my teammates were very nice people. Well, Phetmolge the troll was okay (surprisingly), but the team leader-- Ragtime Cowboy Joe-- he was a bad, bad man. Will you understand if I say that I didn't know he was bad, at the time? I thought all men were like that. He liked to hit women, and in those days, I thought he had a right to do it. Joe died though. Couldn't take it as well as he could dish it out, I guess. And things got a bit better after that. Still, the basic arena was tough. Darkholm, it's not so bad. No chance of dying, of course. Plus... we all know one another. And there's not much hating, you know? Beating on each other in the arena, that's a job, but there are no hard feelings about it. And women get as much respect as men. I like it here. Even if that spyreporter keeps looking at my chest when he talks to me. That's okay. My face isn't that great. I've been told I look tough. I mean-- what the F? I AM tough! This Runeblade is pretty cool. It changes shape, according to what you like, but when nobody's hands are on it, it's a scimitar, which is what I like, anyway. It's got a fancy guard and, yeah, glowing black runes all over the blade. I guess you'd call them glowing black. The blackness kind of spreads out from them, know what I mean? I tried to sharpen it, but my sharpening stone crumbled in my hand. That's a really magical sword, that is. I got the title by fighting Kalidor. Of course he wasn't allowed to use the Runeblade in the arena, or I would have lost, I'm sure. He was really good though. He's one of those werecats, and although he stayed in human form, he was really fast. But on a lucky riposte I disemboweled him. Pretty much. He didn't die. The healers here are pretty awesome. Anyway, that's all I've got to say. See ya. Stassia REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER Oh! There you are! Hullo, then. I should probably be telling you all about the fights, then. There were... let's see... exactly seventeen of them. We do usually have a better turnout, but I suppose a lot of people are getting read for the big tourney over on the mainland. Anyway, seven fights involved a stand-in. So that means 27 actual gladiators competed. At least, this is enough that no one ended up on BOTH the most popular and least popular lists. It's quite disturbing to some people when that happens to them. And you know, in a peculiar twist of human nature, the people to whom that happens are too often the exact sort of people you don't want to see in a disturbed state. You know-- the kind who prowl around muttering to themselves, and then they spot you and say "HA!" And give chase! To my relief, I have not been chased at all this past fortnight. I was at the deep conclave where they talked about the tourney prize. Just saying. It was kind of an honor. Never been invited to a deep conclave before. I sat next to Debby Tonte, who talked about ducks. I never knew Snide Clemens was a duck! There were no challenges, no avoids... no deaths. People basically said, "What? Darkholm? Never mind, no time!" And rushed off, you know, in a state of confusion. I am in a state of confusion, myself. What to talk about, how to fill this page? There are so many possibilities, so few of them involving arena fights. All right, here's the title fight. STASSIA (37-1523) (94-106-4,235) of UP TO NO GOOD fought RASCALLY RABBIT (59-1338) (34-30-0,192) of THE WILLBURYS 1. STASSIA slimly won victory over RASCALLY RABBIT in a 3 minute Title fight. Yes, right. It's a bit rummy, don't you think? She doesn't even have a winning record. And could barely beat a young rabbit. I had a dog that could, and did, eat a young rabbit. It was sad and disgusting. Anyway, now Stassia is our Top Wall of Steel and... reddest redhead. As usual, our overall popularity leader is ??Radar?? ??RADAR?? (82-20310) (81- 95-1,204) of DYSLEXICS UNTIE! II fought WORK IN PROGRESS (38-4193) (71-197-2,190) of JUST BECAUSE. ??RADAR?? subdued WORK IN PROGRESS in an action packed 2 minute fight. Quite. I did think it was an exciting fight. Olaf Modeen was asking whether our little town has any plans for a retirement home for aged warriors. Eh? Isn't that what the Isle of the Eye IS? I mean, yes, yes, all that earnest stuff about defending the land if creatures should attack from another dimension. But is that likely, really? You get a stipend, more if you fight, but something even if you don't, and some land. Some of it is rather good land, too. A lot of it isn't, but I believe the point is to have tough fighters living all along the borders of troubled areas, ready to jump in if enemies attack. Ah... not quite so much like retirement, then. Never mind. I've said quite a lot about quite a little, and I'm quite tired of writing. I'm off for a nap. See you in two weeks!
