                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Hullo!

Well, we had a freeze last night. And yes, it was very cold too. Nearly froze
my ha-has on the taxi ride from the Commission offices to my hotel. (You didn't
think I was going to ride all the way back to Willow Beach in the dark and cold, did
you?). Anyway, the Commish was doing a freeze. I'm not sure what that means, but
they were running around frantically, and it was fun to watch. The cat in the adage
said it best: Work fascinates me. I could watch it for hours.
Hmm... our title fight. RUGEN THE JELLYFISH (82-12478) (72-25-0,235) of
HANNAH'S PALS fought STASSIA (37-1523) (96-108-4,213) of UP TO NO GOOD. RUGEN THE
JELLYFISH viciously subdued STASSIA in a 2 minute Title fight. Congratulations to
The Upright Man, and please try to remember to write a column. Thank you. So Rugen
is once again our top Lunger. And poor Stassia has lost her title of top Wall of
Steel to ??Radar??, who also remains our Overall Popularity Leader.
Sorry to report that one poor fellow got killed this time. It was an accident,
of course, since there were no challenges. JUSTIN (6-6179) (19-26-2,58) of THE
LADY'S LIST fought HAWK (6-5764) (17-7-0,77) of WINGED LEGION. JUSTIN butchered
HAWK in a 1 minute brutal mismatched conflict. Hawk, I don't send deathday gifts,
since that seems rather morbid to me, but if you pop 'round, I will take you over to
the Chalice for a drink. Why? Because when I meet someone, I like to tip a glass
and relax, maybe toss a few items of food at my fellow tavern patrons. Learned it in
school, you know.
I like a good basher brawl. Our top Basher is Buri's man, Thunder Bug. THUNDER
BUG (37-3734) (28-19-0,195) of TACKLE BOX fought ZAKAU (5-4623) (39-37-0,192) of
JOHNS. THUNDER BUG overpowered ZAKAU in a 1 minute mismatched brawl.
Hmm. The Upright Man held onto his position of top team, with a 4-0 turn. Buri
remains in second place, with a 2-1. She-Puppy stayed in third with a 0-2, Rascally
Rabbit moved up from 7th to fourth with a 1-0, Preacher ascended to 5th place with 1-
3, A-Sop dropped to sixth with 8-6, Jorja dropped to seventh with 1-4, and Seraphim
brought in two more teams with a 1-2, but still stayed in eighth place.
This turn's favorite is Men Working. Easy to see why. MEN WORKING (38-4189)
(59-213-1,158) of JUST BECAUSE fought SPUTTERBUZZ (6-5810) (22-9-0,116) of TACKLE
BOX. MEN WORKING won victory over SPUTTERBUZZ in an action packed 3 minute duel. It
was a very exciting fight!
There were four fights with stand-ins this time. And I'm sorry to report that
one of them should not have happened!
*  HOFFA (5-4348) (12-118-0,41) of JOHNS fought BOOKIE'S GUARD (104-5) (35-18-0,75)
of STAND-INS DAMMIT!. HOFFA was handily defeated by BOOKIE'S GUARD in a popular 1
minute uneven fight.
* CLIVE (6-5215) (28-32-5,73) of THE LADY'S LIST fought COCKY SPECTATOR (104-3) (0-0-
0,0) of STAND-INS DAMMIT!. CLIVE devastated COCKY SPECTATOR in a 1 minute
mismatched brawl.
What's wrong with this picture? The Commission had scheduled Hoffa to fight
Clive, that's what. But our local bookie had taken a bet that there would be four
stand-in fights today, and so he arranged for Clive to be delayed in the locker room
when the fight was called. The bookie's guard was handy and offered to fight so they
put him in. And then they had to find a volunteer from the stands when Clive found
his boots and came running out. The bookie, Dire Slive by name, is now under
investigation by the local constable. (There's just one constable, Earnest Thread.)
     Our least popular fighter this turn also faced a stand-in. 2 + 2 = 4 (38-4190)
(39-133-0,47) of JUST BECAUSE fought DEBBY TONTE (104-2) (20-30-0,30) of THE MIDDLE
WAY. 2 + 2 = 4 was devastated by DEBBY TONTE in a 1 minute one-sided bout. Oh dear.
Not the best way to start a career on the Isle. Better luck next turn, eh?

It's time to send this off, so I'll say adieu. Or adios. Or see you later.

??Radar?? -- You know, that was a pretty good fight. And I felt like I got smarter.
Ain't that a gas? You know that song they're singing in Talahya, "On a Clear Day You
Can See Forty Feet." Well, I felt like I could see forty feet-- and around a corner!
I knew what you were thinking and I even knew what I was thinking-- and I was
thinking, "What you're thinking isn't gonna happen." Sorry. I don't let random men
squeeze the girls, even random men who are pretty nice. -- Stassia

Despair -- Aha! With a name like that, don't you get a lot of people triumphing over
despair? It's a happy thing, or at least a solidly contented thing. How's your
neck? -- Crysoprase

                        BLOODGAMES at the WINTER FACE-TO-FACE

Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Winter FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:

DM 96: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and
DM 97: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds

Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:

BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)

DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker
before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited.
The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even
at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.

REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.

CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 96, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds.
For DM 97, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair
for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges.

TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by Wednesday, January 11, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at
the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament.

MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.

ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.

NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.

FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.

AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.

The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.

A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.

The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.

AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving
gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any
special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters
combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that
this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will
survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D.
That warrior could be yours!

The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
