Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade
I have considered your comment about the Vannish warriors singing as they
fought, and my opinion is that they used some kind of magical equivalent of the alien
technological device called a "tape recorder," concealing it in their armor to emit
songs which they sang into it at their leisure. To test this possibility, I have
prevailed upon a magician at the Academy to produce such a spell device for me,
although I chose an instrumental piece for it to emit. That way, there's no
confusion as to whether or not *I* am wasting my breath in that fashion. Because
you're quite right about the breath, of course. One needs it for the fighting.
Malic, while your blue tunic was pleasant enough, I suspect that hanging your
pencase and inkwell from the baldric to facilitate taking notes on the fight was not
what the designer had in mind? The baldric in question appeared sturdy enough to
support a substantial sword.

We had a challenge match this week, for which credit must go to Buri!
SPUTTERBUZZ (6-5810) (28-20-0,199) of TACKLE BOX challenged MARK (5-4088) (59-141-
3,203) of JOHNS. SPUTTERBUZZ outwaited MARK in a crowd pleasing 7 minute gruesome
Challenge fight. There you go--seven minutes long, but crowd pleasing, and
Sputterbuzz is on the popular list, as well as our top Total Parry. Mark isn't,
because he did not wait gracefully. Kept tapping his feet and taking out his pocket
watch. Then he stretched out for a nap, which is not something you ought to do in
the arena. By the way, Mark was our most challenged fighter! Congratulations,
sleepyhead!
Here is a very noteworthy fight! Our Keeper of the Runeblade defeated our
Overall Popularity Leader. ELAYRON (51-1492) (90-62-0,222) of BLOOD + ORANGES fought
??RADAR?? (82-20310) (103-102-2,322) of DYSLEXICS UNTIE! II. ELAYRON narrowly
defeated ??RADAR?? in an exciting 3 minute Title melee. Top Parry-Lunger versus top
Wall of Steel. Snappy dresser vs. olive-drab slob. What did Elayron wear for this
fight? History does not reveal... but I do! He wore armor painted to look like a
gold brocade waistcoat with an elaborate tie, and a tricorn hat with a big white
feather in it. Wore it on a dare, most likely.
Elayron, my blue baldric is very sturdy! Yes, I imagine it could support a
sword, but that would get in the way of the flask of very old brandy with which I
revive the muse from time to time. But I don't ask that of it. Baldrics do what one
asks of them, and I ask mine to support my spy reporting gear. It's a type of
utility baldric.
This turn's favorite is Digger Wasp. 2 + 2 = 4 (38-4190) (49-148-1,86) of JUST
BECAUSE fought DIGGER WASP (7-4899) (15-5-0,87) of FLAGG'S CHAMPIONS. 2 + 2 = 4 was
savagely defeated by DIGGER WASP in a crowd pleasing 6 minute fight. By the gods, in
six short minutes he SOLVED that equation! Ahem. Sorry. Couldn't resist.
What's next? Ah... HIKARAN DAAL (1-2070) (80-94-1,189) of STORM RIDERS fought
CRYSOPRASE (1-3266) (119-139-3,205) of ILLFANG PACT. HIKARAN DAAL was defeated by
CRYSOPRASE in a crowd pleasing 4 minute duel. There's a fight that will generate
personal ads, see if it doesn't. Crysoprase is our top Parry-Striker.
Since we're pointing fingers, who is the very least loved of all of the fighters
here? Ah... that would be one of the Hoffas. HOFFA (5-4622) (39-62-0,80) of JOHNS
fought BIG BIRD (2-5703) (19-18-3,56) of THE FUNNY FARM. HOFFA was overpowered by
BIG BIRD in a 1 minute one-sided duel. He did look like he'd rather be anywhere
else, doing anything else. In fact, he was kind of doing something else. Hoffa was
having an argument with someone in the stands. While his attention was diverted, Big
Bird clobbered him.
Still, we have better things to talk about than popularity, haven't we? For
example, the fact that there was no Aimed Blow stylemaster this turn. I think that
means no Aimers fought at all. Same as last week. We need Aimed Blows! If you know
one, ask him or her or it to transfer here.
