                                 THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the Keeper of the Runeblade

Well. Now I have to write a Keeper of the Runeblade column. What can I say?
If not for the healers in the infirmary, I would be peeing blood after our fight.
You know they don't ever mention the winner of a fight having to go to the infirmary,
but it certainly happens.
We were matched against each other two turns out of three, Elayron, with one win
for each of us. I'm surprised I defeated you this last time, because I think your
style as well as your obvious talent give you a clear advantage.
Anyway, here I am. Not a bad chair, but it's got too much carving for my taste.
Heh, including some initials. As for the other honors associated with this title,
I've got an old spy reporter trying to stick me with his bar bill, and this strange,
evil-looking weapon. It's not like the Free Blades ceremonial weapon, El Cid, that
they say changes shape according to what sort of weapon the wielder needs. No, this
one is a scimitar, and stuck that way. With creepy runes etched on the blade. I'm
sure that sort of thing weakens a good hunk of steel, doesn't it?
I could fight with a scimitar, but we're not allowed to use this weapon in the
arena. What good is it then? I'm not going to wear it around. In the first place
it's big enough that it would have to be slung over my back. A scabbard comes with
it, of course, but still, it's heavy, it makes my shirts not hang right, and... I
just don't like its nasty vibe. So after having a good long look at it, I gave it to
the Commission to keep in the Tower as kind of a museum piece. They told me most of
the Keepers do that, after a day or two.
That's all I have to say. I hope someone else wins the title today so I don't
have to think of something to write again nest turn.

Very sincerely,
Crysoprase

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Well well well!

Yes, well, here we are again. Malic here, coming to you from the Margarita
suite in the Black Tower. I bring you my report with chunks of rock salt around the
rim, very decorative.
Eep, one of you earnest fellows killed another one of you this time out. LENNON
(5-4087) (37-36-1,138) of JOHNS fought BIG BIRD (2-5703) (21-19-3,92) of THE FUNNY
FARM. LENNON murdered BIG BIRD in a 1 minute mismatched competition. I say, that's
not so sporting, is it? One may have the urge to pummel anyone in a silly mascot
suit, but it should be done gently. Anyway... random match, so one assumes it
probably wasn't personal. Although it might be, now.
Ah yes, the title fight. In a valiant attempt to win back the title that was
once his, SPUTTERBUZZ (6-5810) (31-20-0,216) of TACKLE BOX challenged CRYSOPRASE (1-
3266) (123-139-3,262) of ILLFANG PACT. SPUTTERBUZZ was viciously subdued by
CRYSOPRASE in a 4 minute Challenge Title fight. Top TP challenged top PS. Longish
fight. It was a good try. But at least we got a column, or a quarter-column maybe,
from Crysoprase. An effort, anyway. And Sputterbuzz isn't the top TP anymore, but
he was before this fight. Crysoprase is this turn's favorite, I'm not sure why...
maybe because the fight was four minutes and some people thought Sputterbuzz dragged
it out a bit? That's overly impatient, if you ask me.
??RADAR?? (82-20310) (106-103-2,235) of DYSLEXICS UNTIE! II fought HIKARAN DAAL
(1-2070) (83-95-1,208) of STORM RIDERS. ??RADAR?? demolished HIKARAN DAAL in a
popular 1 minute gruesome one-sided melee. ??Radar?? is our top Wall of Steel as
well as our Overall Popularity Leader. Well done.
TOLAIS DEEPHEART (42-1620) (128-140-0,196) of HIGHLANDERS fought ELAYRON (51-
1492) (93-63-0,198) of BLOOD + ORANGES. TOLAIS DEEPHEART was devastated by ELAYRON
in a popular 1 minute bloody uneven brawl. This keeps happening, doesn't it?
Elayron is our top Parry-Lunger, on his way back into the Grand Challenger Champs to
win back the title.
TASHI'SINDAR (1-3249) (82-60-3,203) of STORM RIDERS II fought CLIVE (6-5215)
(45-44-5,159) of THE LADY'S LIST. TASHI'SINDAR handily defeated CLIVE in an action
packed 1 minute uneven melee. Tashi'Sindar is our top Lunger, and welcome to it.
MEN WORKING (38-4189) (70-231-1,182) of JUST BECAUSE fought FERD THE TOWER (104-
27) (120-15-8,280) of TACKLE BOX. MEN WORKING was vanquished by FERD THE TOWER in
an exciting 1 minute one-sided fight. Men Working is our top Basher and Ferd the
Tower, of course, is our top Educator.
     RODEKI RAMBLER (42-1158) (37-66-0,188) of FLAGG 16 fought MARK (5-4088) (59-145-
3,196) of JOHNS. RODEKI RAMBLER won victory over MARK in an action packed 6 minute
fight. It was Rodeki Rambler who took the top Total Parry title away from
Sputterbuzz.
JAMMY LARKE (5-4926) (53-37-0,185) of THE MIDDLE WAY 5 fought GAR & BRILL (38-
4252) (84-153-1,178) of JUST BECAUSE. JAMMY LARKE overpowered GAR & BRILL in a 1
minute one-sided fight. Mr. Larke is top Parry-Riposte, a lovely style to watch.
The most stylish style. That's what I'd be, I think, if I were a gladiator. That,
or I'd combine the sport with track and field and be a Runner. Gar & Brill is our
best Striker.
MIKEL (6-6190) (37-34-3,189) of THE LADY'S LIST fought SHEWISH GIANT (104-25)
(0-0-0,181) of DYSLEXICS UNTIE!. MIKEL was overpowered by SHEWISH GIANT in a popular
1 minute mismatched brawl. Despite losing to a stand-in, Mikel is our top Slasher.
Ah... it's time for another round. I've asked them to put an umbrella in mine,
in honor of Debby Tonte, who beat Aloyicious. ALOYICIUS (6-5045) (23-48-2,65) of THE
LADY'S LIST fought DEBBY TONTE (104-2) (20-30-0,30) of THE MIDDLE WAY. ALOYICIUS was
handily defeated by DEBBY TONTE in a 1 minute uneven duel.

I lift my Margarita to you all! See you in fourteen!

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Hot Flash! The Face-to-Face Tourney will be in the 18th, 19th, and 20th of this
month. Get your strategies in by the 17th, please and thank you.

Tolais Deepheart -- Quite reasonably so. I have ordered you a bouquet of blood
oranges as a gift. -- Elayron

Crysoprase -- I would be delighted to provide you with oranges, also, if that suits
your taste. The color is especially cheering at this season. -- Elayron

Gar & Brill -- You are worthless and weak. You don't belong here. You should be
sitting behind someone's house, half buried in snow. -- Hikaran Daal

Tolais Deepheart -- It was not my idea to THROW the oranges at you during the fight.
Nor Elayron's, either. Hikaran I could believe it of. But I actually think it was
one of the Bookie's Guards, trying to put you off your rhythm. They aren't supposed
to bet on the fights, but I believe they do. -- Tashi'sindar

Elayron -- She threw lightning, darn it! Scared the bejabers out of me. Aside from
that, it was a very enjoyable fight, except for the part at the end where I won. Not
a bad thing in itself, but it means I have to write a column--and who knows, one of
these days I could get inducted. *shudders* But you're very skilled, and it was fun
to test my own skills against yours. -- Crysoprase
P.S. I'd rather we stopped meeting like this. I like you, and it pains me to strike
you with weapons.

Tashi'Sindar -- Wow. That was very decisive. I don't do well against your style.
Well fought. And by the way, I do have a scabbard for the dagger. It's kind of
built into a pocket, so it isn't too noticeable. -- Tolais Deepheart
P.S. Oops, did I restore your winning record?

Satchel -- Retirement. That's the way to go. Our manager says we should at least
learn all the skills we can, first. Bleh. Anyway, congraulations, I guess. --
Adabemis (Balmador is sulking)

Hoffa 5-4299 -- Why did you allow yourself to be named the same as two other fighters
on your same team? And are you really a golem? -- Philthry

More than two others. There are Hoffas fighting in every arena on the Isle,
mostly from the same source, all from the same manager.

Hoffa 5-4622 -- Well fought. Thank you, however, for the riposting move, which I
shall cherish. -- Pelis the True

                           AVOIDS, BLOODFEUDS, & CHALLENGES

                                       by Pagan

Ever wonder how the whole challenge/avoid thing works?
Who you fight depends on exactly how it works. We will never know exactly how it
works unless we can get a look at the coding for the program, but this is how I think
it works:

The Situation:
The system allows a warrior to make two separate challenges and two distinct
avoids.
Avoids are distinct in that they MUST indicate a specific team to be avoided, so
a "double avoid" indicates a single team twice, which by default means you are
avoiding one team. In this case, the second avoid is a duplicate and therefore a
waste of an avoid.
Challenges are to specific warriors. You have a first challenge, and then you
have a second challenge.

The Process:
First the computer removes all Dark Arena challengers from the list of available
warriors.
Second, the computer checks for WHO fights WHO by going though all TVs and
bloodfeuds, which are 100% sure to go through except in four instances:
     1. the warrior challenged does not fight,
     2. the warrior challenged is also making a bloodfeud or TV challenge and that
challenge has already been assigned,
     3. the warrior has already been assigned to a Dark Arena fight,
     4. that warrior has declared your team to be one of his warrior's avoids,
reducing your challenge to 50%.
Third, the computer assesses all the regular first-challenge warriors and assigns
fights. All other challenges are at 100% chance of success except in a few instances:
warrior challenged is going to the DA, warrior challenged is involved in a previously
assigned challenge, warrior challenged is not running this turn, or warrior challenged
has avoided your team at 50% chance to avoid.
Fourth, the computer assesses and assigns all secondary challenges of warriors
not so far assigned for bloodfeuds and TVs.
Fifth, the computer assesses and assigns all the regular second challenges.
Sixth, the computer assigns random matchups in each available class starting with
the highest class first.
Seventh, the computer finds the remaining warriors that have successfully avoided
all first and second challenges and/or who also did not get randomly assigned, AND for
whom no more available warriors remain in their class for random pairing. All of
these warriors get RSI-generated warriors to fight based on their class.
So, if I'm right and avoids reduce the chance for a challenge to 50%, then:
In the absence of an avoid
          single challenge = 100% success
double challenge = 100% success, then an additional 100% success
     Where an avoid is involved
single challenge vs avoid = 50% success
          double challenge vs avoid = 75% (chance to avoid is 0.5 * 0.5 = 0.25; 1 -
0.25 = 75% chance to succeed

Bloodfeuds and TVs may increase the percentage chance of success above 100%, or
they may not. I feel that their increased ability to get through is based solely on
the way the computer assigns challenges. They are first, so they are most likely to
go through. The 100% chance for a challenge to succeed is 100% if it's a TV bloodfeud
and you are the first one to get assigned a fight that day because you are also the
Duelmaster. But after that the chances start to diminish rapidly.
The run-through for second challenges theoretically means your challenge should
be 100% but it's not the case if you are the LAST guy the computer goes to for finding
challenges.
If you don't double challenge, you significantly lower your chance to get your
challenge through. The second challenge is not equal to the first challenge.
