Zuwayza:

Tankesh didn't waste time cursing, he had a decision to make, and fast: fight
or flight. He could take the two men that were supposed to "teach him better
manners," and their captain and the rest of his men as well, come to that. He wanted
to. But would it forward his mission, which was to get into the Kashka, kill the
traitor, restore Kasarya to her rightful position, make sure the Andorian League came
out of the whole mess looking good, and get out safely himself? Or run, change his
appearance yet again, and try a different approach? Prudence said he should run, but
he didn't want to.
"You leave him alone!" Kasarya screeched.
Tankesh half sighed, half grinned. That would do it! No guard liked taking
orders from a civilian, and damned few Karnhorns could bear to take orders from a
woman, and then when you throw in the apparent difference in class.... He turned,
dropping into a hand-to-hand fighting stance. No point in killing these men if he
didn't have to; they were just doing their jobs.
Party of five, two men dismounted and carrying clubs. Okay, clubs he would
fight bare-handed until he could grab one and turn it on the other. But if either
one drew a sword, they were dead men. He feinted to the left, wove right, and then
darted toward the left-hand man and grappled briefly, seizing his club in time to
turn and parry the other fellow. The right-hand man staggered a little when his blow
met unexpected resistance, but he recovered fast. So did the one Tankesh had
disarmed, grabbing him from behind in a bear hug. Tankesh slammed his head back,
butting the bear-hugger in the face, stamped on the man's foot, and twisted free.
By this time, the other two guardsmen had gotten their mouths closed and were
dismounting, drawing swords. So much for Mr. Nice Guy. His sword slid into his hand
as he turned and moved to put the wall at his back. If the women had any sense--and
Kasarya, at least, should--they'd get out of the way.
Taynisya took a step forward and said, "Do not kill him! This is the man for
whom the Vizier has been searching, and he must be delivered to the Kashka alive."
Tankesh took note, in the back of his mind, that this had been a trap all along.
Taynisya would pay for that, but later. Right now... nobody told him that he had to
keep these Karnhorn Palace Guards alive. Especially not that captain, sitting on his
horse and waiting for his men to "teach the peasant manners." Afraid to do his own
dirty work? Or did he just feel that he was above such things? Whichever, he was
going to find himself in trouble soon enough....
Tankesh took out the first swordsman before the man could get set, with a
slashing sweep to the sword arm that crippled it. Then spun back to drive off one of
the club-wielders he'd fought first, back to the second swordsman.... The action
flowed into a blur guided by instinct and years of training, years that even the best
of these guardsmen couldn't match. They were probably good enough to dominate
peasants, but that wasn't good enough to take HIM.
Which the captain seemed to recognize, finally. He drew his own sword and
leaped down from his horse. Off-hand shortsword for parrying, Tankesh noted, and
steel back- and breast-plates instead of the leather worn by his men. The captain
moved like a man who knew what he was doing, too, probably trained in one of the
better local schools, maybe even a local duelist... but could he equal a gladiator?
And would the other men, the two that weren't badly hurt, stay out of it? He heard
the sounds of a scuffle off to the side, and Kasarya cursing, but couldn't turn to
look. With luck, she had taken out one of the guardsmen; at the least, she was
keeping the man busy.

In the Far West:

Herlas sat at one side of the boat next to the rail, wrapped in his cloak and
staring out to sea; he ignored everybody. Shania sat in the bow, wrapped in her
cloak, staring out to sea, and ignoring everybody. The rest of the group, Ashon
Chang, Werre, Rughal, Vurand, and Jammies, went about the business of getting the
boat ready to sail. When the tide turned and started outward just before sunset, the
boat went with it.
Werre, Rughal, and Jammies handled the actual sailing, two on and the third
resting in rotation. Werre had sailed before, Rughal had some knowledge of boats,
and Jammies was a fast learner. It would turn out to be an exhausting schedule,
which they all realized, but Vurand was worse than useless on a boat, Shania didn't
have the strength to help, and Ashon Chang's job was to keep a close and constant
watch on Herlas.
The sun set before they were out of sight of the coast, coloring the sea before
them like blood.
"A bad omen," Vurand muttered, staring westward past Shania's motionless form.
Ashon Chang hesitated, looking away from Herlas to the red sea beyond. One
could not deny the reality of omens, but.... "Our journey will be what we make of
it, my friend."
"And we're nearing the end of it," Jammies added, coming up behind the two.
"Praise Mantor for that!"
"Geographically, we may be coming to the end," Ashon Chang corrected him, "but
in terms of actions to be taken and problems to be solved, I suspect we aren't even
half-way."
"I didn't want to hear that," Jammies told him. He shrugged. "I know you're
right, but can't you let me keep an illusion or two for another few days?"
The last burning rim of the sun disappeared under the horizon, and night
unrolled from the east. The speed with which darkness fell was unnerving.
"The moon'll be up in a couple of hours," Vurand muttered uneasily. "I'm not
afraid of the dark." He sounded unsure of that, and yet all the party knew that it
was true. The Orc had moved through the darkness of the mountains and forests
without hesitation. But there was something about this night....
Ashon Chang glanced back at Herlas, but the Fratsfan merely shifted his position
a little and continued to stare into the distance. At the bow, Shania was invisible.
"Lady Silverstar should go into the cabin and sleep," he said suddenly. Saying her
name focused his vague alarm, and he stared forward, trying to pierce the darkness.
"I'll remind her," Vurand agreed. He braced himself on the side of the cabin
against the movement of the deck and edged forward. A horse was easier to ride.
Hell, if a horse made trouble, started pitching, you could get off and walk.
"Shania, you need to.... Shania? Shania! Rughal, Ashon, she's not here! Shania's
gone!"
"She...she just went into the cabin when it got dark, and we didn't notice,"
Jammies said quickly. He scrambled down into the low doorway to check.
Ashon Chang moved in a different direction; the samurai had his own suspicions,
and he'd been against including Herlas in their party once the man had confessed.
The Fratsfan mage hadn't moved except to stand up and stare forward. The gladiator
saw his face pale as pearl in the darkness. He grabbed Herlas' shoulder. "Where is
she?"
     "I don't know--"
"TELL ME, damn you!" He shook the mage hard.
"I. Don't. Know," Herlas repeated. "I've been under your eye the whole time--
yours or one of the others. What could I have done, how could I have spirited her
away--"
     "Magic."
"Not in the current state of the Arcanum," Herlas snarled. "My powers are not
so great that I can draw from Outside sources. And would I do something to Shania
and stay here to receive your vengeance? I'm not such a fool!"
"Very nearly, though," Rughal said grimly. He grabbed Herlas' other shoulder.
"You may not have taken her away, but you can make a guess as to who did, how, why...
and where. If you want to see the sun rise again--"
"The triumph of brawn over brain?" Herlas sneered. Then he let out his breath
in a sigh. "I can make guesses," he admitted, "but they won't do you any good. If
she was taken as I think, none of you could get near her." He sighed again. "I do
not wish Shania Silverstar ill, but some things are too important for personal
considerations--the restoration of the Arcanum is one of them. Shania understood
that herself. It is her goal. She's dying, as you know whether you admit it or not.
What better use for her life than to--"
Rughal's free hand closed around the magician's throat, choking off any further
words.
"Don't kill him yet, Rughal," Ashon Chang said grimly. "First let him tell us
his 'guesses' on what has happened to Lady Shania. Then I'll help you kill him."
One hand ran along the sheathed curve of his sword.
Rughal relaxed his grip a little. Herlas sucked in air. "Start with who took
her," the ranger said.
"I don't know names," Herlas gasped. "A coalition of wizards and priests--"
"Think of some names," the samurai growled. His dagger gleamed silver in the
starlight as he brought it up to prick the Fratsfan's cheek just below his eye.
"I don't know names! Just...Murluvir, the one who came to see me in Zensu. He
isn't the principal, just an agent, as I was to be--"
"Don't lie," Rughal said. His voice was cold and smooth as ice. Or steel. "As
you WERE an agent. For whom?"
"I don't know! I didn't ask. Some things it's better not to know...."
     "Guess," Ashon Chang ordered implacably.
"I don't know!" Herlas panted, perhaps gathering strength for more denials.
But he finally said, "I suspect...Folstrom. Or someone like them. Someone who can
draw on power from Outside."
"So that's who...for now. Tell us why," Rughal demanded. Before the Fratsfan
could answer, he added, "And don't tell us it's another thing you don't know!"
"But I don't!" he wailed. "All I can do is guess--"
"So guess." Ashon Chang leaned closer. "But guess right."
"Maybe...because she's from Outside, too. Or because she's a seer. Because she
knows things that other people don't understand how to know. Or because she's linked
to the Ghean Arcanum even though she's an Outsider. Some of those reasons, all of
them, none of them. I swear I don't know!"
"And how was it done?" Ashon Chang asked. "We assume magic of some kind--
nothing else would make sense. But under current circumstances--"
"They have no fear, no discretion, no patience!" Herlas' exasperation seemed
genuine. "It must have been some kind of small Gate, but to open one NOW...the
risks...."
"And the last question," Rughal said in a soft voice that sounded no less
dangerous for its softness. "Where have they taken her?"
     There was a long silence.
     "You don't know," Ashon Chang said.  His grip on the man's shoulder tightened;
he could feel bones grinding against each other under his fingers. "Guess."
"To the Eye of the West. Wherever it is."

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Wow!!! Another exciting cycle here in Andorak, with a whopping 50 fights! That's
great! Keep it up out there, Andorians!

We have a new King's Sentinel this time out, as Timber Wolf and Maserati both shipped
off to Primus; but I'll leave that for you to see for yourselves...

SHIVAA (26-3523) (88-62-0,213) of WARCKERS challenged INTENDRID O'REILLY (11-2969)
(45-44-0,214) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS.
SHIVAA was viciously subdued by INTENDRID O'REILLY in a 3 minute Challenge fight.
Up 1. At least Intendrid beat Shivaa HARD for her weak challenge.

MARS (52-2609) (78-56-0,218) of INCARNATIONS challenged FIRE MOUTH (25-2478) (36-26-
0,220) of THE NATURALS.
MARS savagely defeated FIRE MOUTH in a exciting 7 minute gory Challenge melee. Up
2. Another weak challenge, but this one better than Shivaa's. Congrats to Mars, I
guess.

JACK THE RIPPER (14-572) (28-38-1,191) of THE DEATH SQUAD challenged SNOWY OWL (71-
3252) (42-41-0,209) of CALL OF THE WILD.
JACK THE RIPPER vanquished SNOWY OWL in a popular 1 minute mismatched Challenge
brawl. Up 18. What a win for Jack! Snowy Owl has been cleaning house since
returning to our sands, but this time out Jack cleaned his clock!

JESUS (82-5459) (22-11-2,200) of RISEN FROM THE DEAD challenged WEIRD HEAD BOY (63-
2216) (22-12-0,234) of SUPERIOR FORCES 2.
JESUS was overpowered by WEIRD HEAD BOY in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge match.
Up 34! That's the spirit! Weird Head Boy just didn't want to drop back in the
rankings, I guess.

SILENT LUCIDITY (48-2586) (25-13-0,198) of PSYCHOTIC ENDEAVOR challenged LEETA
STORMRIDER (24-3849) (69-75-0,209) of KRILL CAVALRY.
SILENT LUCIDITY was vanquished by LEETA STORMRIDER in a 1 minute Challenge fight.
Up 11. Silent Lucidity should have kept his mouth shut, as issuing that challenge
stopped him short.

CARRIS FALLSTAR (11-3471) (41-35-0,194) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged LEPRECHAUN
(63-2130) (38-30-1,200) of DIRTY TRICKS.
CARRIS FALLSTAR beat LEPRECHAUN in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Challenge brawl. Up
6. At least the CROWD was happy; Leprrechaun was mumbling all the way to the
infirmary.

JESTER (38-830) (44-51-0,185) of MINSTRELS challenged SCRYB SPRITE (60-4003) (53-46-
0,187) of MAGICK.
JESTER defeated SCRYB SPRITE in a action packed 3 minute Challenge melee. Up 2.
Ho-hum. The Jester over the Sprite. How funny an image does THAT conjure!?!

GLEEMAN (11-4009) (30-23-0,193) of CARNIVAL challenged DEATH COMMANDER (14-669) (30-
44-3,193) of THE DEATH SQUAD.
GLEEMAN vanquished DEATH COMMANDER in a 2 minute gory uneven Challenge duel.
Even. Gleeman came close to killing his more experienced opponent. Calm down,
man...it'll be alright.

PEPSI (68-8510) (31-14-0,192) of OVERWORLD challenged BLUNT FORCE (63-2186) (36-11-
2,201) of CAR AND DRIVER.
PEPSI won victory over BLUNT FORCE in a popular 1 minute Challenge duel. Up 9.
Pepsi absorbed what little force Blunt could muster and sent the Car and Driver
warrior packing.

PLUTO (68-7735) (47-42-2,192) of REAL FAKE CHARACTERS challenged MICHAEL HONORBLADE
(11-3300) (76-46-0,203) of KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE.
PLUTO overpowered MICHAEL HONORBLADE in a popular 2 minute uneven Challenge
match. Up 9. A surprise win for Pluto, but well fought and challenged. Way to go!

ZEBRAWOOD (41-3595) (37-20-0,182) of ACTION TOYS challenged SALINE LAMORAK (11-4261)
(28-27-0,185) of SCARLET KNIGHTS.
ZEBRAWOOD subdued SALINE LAMORAK in a 2 minute Challenge match. Up 3.
Impressive record, Zebrawood. Just remember, Saline's used to look like that, too.

MERCURY (99-780) (42-36-5,171) of WAR SEEKERS challenged THE PIRATE (25-4572) (25-16-
0,193) of SLY'S SLAYERS.
MERCURY devastated THE PIRATE in a exciting 4 minute mismatched Challenge
conflict. Up 22. It doesn't pay to be a privateer around Andorian waters, and
Mercury wanted to make sure that The Pirate took the hint.

AL BUNDY (14-2010) (33-28-0,166) of THE DEATH SQUAD challenged FACE (25-2504) (32-26-
5,181) of THE NATURALS.
AL BUNDY was devastated by FACE in a 2 minute mismatched Challenge bout. Up 15.
Pretty evenly experienced, but Face was just about at his best as he crushed Al
Bundy, not an easy task.

WEBSTER (41-3848) (29-18-2,175) of ACTION TOYS challenged ROBYN (66-1996) (54-56-
2,187) of CRIMSON PEGASI.
WEBSTER was vanquished by ROBYN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge bout. Up 12.
Don't mistake her beauty for a lack of ability (nor her lack of finesse for a lack of
skill). Robyn fought in Tarrgir and is one of my personal favorites...I may be her
biggest fan! Way to fend off Webster's advances, Robyn. You're way to good for him!

IN THE AFTERNOON (82-10018) (11-6-0,121) of SUNNYDALE challenged WOLVERINE (66-3871)
(26-20-4,180) of X-FORCE.
IN THE AFTERNOON vanquished WOLVERINE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. Up
59!!! Wolverine was the most surprised gladiator of the cycle as In The Afternoon
swept his feet right out from under him.

LANFEAR (52-2872) (25-14-2,134) of INCARNATIONS challenged WARLOCK (66-2473) (54-84-
1,177) of X-FORCE.
LANFEAR slimly lost to WARLOCK in a crowd pleasing 5 minute gory Challenge brawl.
Up 43!!! Does everyone want to challenge as high as possible when fighting X-Force?
I guess not, only two of you did. Lanfear obviously thought that Warlock would be an
easy win, but discovered the King's First Scout can still scum with the best of them.
Okay, so it wasn't really a scum fest, but it was five minutes! If you weren't
there, I'm sure you heard the crowd raoring for the entire bout. Warlock pulled out
the win in the end.

MR BLACK (82-5468) (10-4-1,92) of FROM THE RESERVOIR challenged PUSSYCAT (14-3701)
(36-37-1,143) of THE DOGHOUSE.
MR BLACK overpowered PUSSYCAT in a exciting 1 minute one-sided Challenge match.
Up 51!!! Another huge challenge, this one with a huge win to go along with it as Mr
Black absolutely spanked Pussycat.

JOE SATRIANI (11-4422) (17-20-2,81) of THE HEADCUTTERS II challenged TWILO THUNDER
(60-5225) (28-17-1,100) of CLUB CULTURE.
JOE SATRIANI was beaten by TWILO THUNDER in a 2 minute Challenge fight. Up 19.
Our final challenge has Joe Satriani forced to bear another beating, this one from
Twilo Thunder. Can you believe that the title fight was a random matchup?

Speaking of that particular matchup...

PRIMUS BOUND (40-2996) (82-34-0,272) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought SIRYN (66-2357) (53-
42-0,192) of X-FORCE II.
These two went at it for an amazing 16 minutes, both showing just how much they
wanted to win the fight. Siryn wanted to be back in the Grand Challenger Champions,
and Primus Bound knew a win might put him in the top spot. In the end, Primus Bound
was just experienced enough to pull out the hard fought victory and claim the
position of King's Sentinel! Congratulations to Manager and his (still) Primus
Bound. Don't forget that column!

Positive -- I was hoping you'd hold out much longer against a petite little girl like
me. I wanted to test some strategies. Oh well. There must be better challenges
around here somewhere. -- Silent Lucidity

Timber Wolf -- Looking good! -- Carny

Loon -- Welcome! -- Carny

Joe Satriani -- Welcome! -- Gleeman

Newest Lyratilans -- A big welcome! -- Kottonkandy

Smith -- My turn to win, fellow Aruaki. -- Gleeman, spelled with 1 "G"

Dis-embowell -- You fell for the ol' "switch hands" ploy. -- Jester, Minstrels

Bruenor Battlehammer -- Ah, I needed that. Thanks. -- Llud

Saline Lamorak -- Too salty. Try it with garlic next time, okay? -- Leeta

Zebrawood -- The stripes made me dizzy? -- Schendirk

Free Box -- Yeah, right, about like a free lunch! I know when I'm outclassed, even
if it's just out-managed. Good work. -- Pussycat

Tease-Me -- That would be mean. I don't do mean. -- Billie Lu
P.S. At least, not on purpose.

All -- Remember to put your arena number on your strategy sheets. Strategies turned
in without an arena number run the risk of missing the turn. -- NAIEI

To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would
greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione
