Zuwayza:
Tankesh parried the guard captain's thrust and riposted, cutting the man's sword
arm. Minor wound, wouldn't stop him, wouldn't even slow him down. Damn. He parried
again. This guardsman was too good, he had no business being this good! Off to the
side, Kasarya gave a sudden squeak, and the sounds of struggle there ceased. Tankesh
still couldn't turn to look, but he had the uneasy feeling that one of the other
guardsmen was going to sneak up on him from the side, if he couldn't take this one
out of the fight in a hurry. The guard captain knew it, too, and pressed him harder.
There was a soft explosion, a nearly silent puff of air, but the ground shifted
under his feet. Tankesh sprang back, disengaging automatically, and the guard
captain did likewise. Both men looked around quickly.
At first glance, nothing seemed changed. At second glance...nothing seemed
quite the same. The building Tankesh was facing across the street, of sooty red
brick imperfectly plastered, turned browner and somewhat cleaner, though still
imperfectly plastered. The air, usually cool and damp even in summer, was suddenly
hot and dry. Excited voices called out in a language that sounded like Akhaddic
but...not quite the same; Tankesh didn't recognize many of the words he was hearing.
He stared at the guard captain, who stared back at him, wide-eyed.
The ground rocked again, and there was a sound, or not quite a sound, like
ripping silk. Dirty red brick and damp, cool air.
Before the guardsmen could react to the second change, Tankesh whirled and
grabbed Kasarya's arm, jerking her away from the man holding her, and plunged down a
convenient alley...which he didn't remember being there before, but he wasn't going
to look this gift horse in the mouth. With any luck, the guardsmen would be too
shaken to pursue them. Not that GOOD luck had been a prominent feature of his day so
far. Which meant it was about time for that to change, dammit. He was due some good
luck! The alley turned sharply and plunged into a tunnel formed where the second
stories of the buildings on either side reached out to touch each other. He watched
alertly for open doors or gates, anything to get them into more shelter and
concealment, because the guardsmen would have recovered quickly, and he thought he
could hear them behind, stumbling over barrels in the alley and pounding on doors.
No, wait, there hadn't BEEN any barrels in the alley....
Worry about that later.
The immediate need was to get away.
The alley took another sharp turn and opened out into a little courtyard filled
with harsh, hot sunlight.
Not Zuwayza.
But there were enemies here, just the same. Men in robes and turbans and the
dark, hawk-nosed faces characteristic of the Karnhorns turned at the sound of running
feet, hands going automatically to the curved swords that each wore at his waist.
Tankesh darted sideways, dragging Kasarya after him, in the hopes of finding an exit
or at least putting a wall at his back. Tripped over something--he heard the sharp
yapping of a dog as he fell. His head slammed against something else, hard, and that
was all he knew.

Rithakar:
Onuphre had disarmed the man and was now holding him in an iron grip to prevent
him bleeding to death from the stump. Seeing that he had his companions' attention
again, the Shew said, "I thought we might want to ask this fellow some questions."
"What an excellent idea!" Tamea Soulkeeper purred. She moved closer to the
Shew's prisoner and examined him curiously. "He appears to be of a race unknown in
Alastari," she murmured, then glanced at the blood leaking from the stump of the
man's arm. It was an unusual shade of red, almost coppery. "Of an unknown species
entirely. I wonder where the Folstrom found him?"
"Stop wondering and ask your questions," Onuphre suggested. "He isn't going to
last long, as much blood as he's lost."
Tamea gave the Shew a look that would have put a dagger to shame for sharpness
and addressed a brisk question to the prisoner in a language none of the other
gladiators recognized.
The man stared at her blankly, then mumbled a few words.
The witch frowned and rapped out another question in what sounded like a
different language.
The man shook his head feebly.
"Those other people make my head spin," Debby Tonte announced. She was glaring
at the main body of lancers, who were still rippling and fading in and out of
solidity. "They make me feel like I forgot the umbrella in my drink, or, you know,
no olives. I don't like it."
Bellerophon and Mr. Testosterone turned to look at the larger group again. It
didn't appear to offer much danger, if the lancers couldn't even rejoin the active
universe.
"That sphere the banner-man is carrying!" Mr. Testosterone said suddenly.
"Could that be the Eye we're looking for?"
Ultraist* squinted at it and nodded once. "It could be," the big Aruaki
admitted. "It looks pretty much the way the Eye looked--if it was the Eye--when I
saw it last. But how would they come to have it?"
"If that's the Eye of the South," Bellerophon answered briskly, "it doesn't
matter how they got it. We have to get it back."
This declaration gathered the attention of the whole group that had originally
set out from the Isle. After the delays and disappointments experienced so far, the
possibility of actually being able to accomplish their task was invigorating.
"How do we get it from them?" E.A. Polecat demanded. "They aren't all here, I
mean, they're not in this world completely, and if they can't touch us, we can't
touch them, right?"
"We can get right in among them with our swords drawn," Skirnir suggested.
Holding his blade at the ready, he moved forward as he spoke.
The others rushed to join him, out of loyalty and duty and from a simple desire
to have, finally, a clear fight that they could win. Because they were going to win.
At their near approach, the lancers seemed to get a firmer grip on reality and become
solid, or nearly so, but at the same time many of them began to age with appalling
swiftness, as though all the years they had slept through were falling on them at
once. Skirnir, who found himself paired with Black Skull, the retired Rocani Lord
Protector, headed for the banner man who had what was probably the Eye of the South.
Bellerophon and Natasha Knight targeted the leader of the troop, and the other
gladiators spread out to do as much damage as they could.
The man with the banner and the Eye shouted when he found himself beset by two
warriors, and others rallied to his side, including the leader. The battle was brief
but fierce, the end inevitable. Though they had the advantages of numbers and of
being mounted, the lancers were weary and confused, and when one of them took a
deadly wound, he rapidly collapsed into a pile of bones that crumbled to dust.
Black Skull looked over the seen of the battle, shaken. Nothing remained of the
men they'd fought, who had fought them with the fierceness of desperation, but dust
drifting away on the wind, and a few pieces of age-weakened metal--spearheads, a
helmet or two, a buckle.... "That was..." he shook his head, unable to think of a
word to describe his feeling.
"It was as bad, in its way, as though we'd lost," Bellerophon said grimly. "But
we won." He stepped carefully through the dust to the spherical stone, white and
dead as the moon, that might be all that remained of the Eye of the South.
"Better not to touch it!" Ultraist advised, coming up beside him.
"Right! Remember what it did to that poor dragon!" Debby Tonte added, joining
them. She rummaged in her straw bag and pulled out a large towel. "Roll it into
this, so you can carry it safely. We can take it back to HER, and then forget about
it. And the sooner the better, too!"
*Ultraist is now known as Sylvester Frothingslosh.

Talahya?
Scarlatti knelt on the stony beach and scooped a hand through the water, sniffed
it, then touched his tongue to it. "Salt. This is weird. Only something really
strange could change a freshwater, inland lake to salt water."
"Unless," Fizban repeated, "it's not the lake we remember."
"Well, that'd be pretty strange, too."
Rogan cleared his throat. "That isn't all that's strange," the blind man said.
"You sense it, too?" Moonjumper asked. "But of course, you would--"
"We aren't in Talahya," Rogan confirmed. "At least, in no part of Talahya I've
ever encountered, and we were walking a known route. I sense a different pattern of
buildings and open spaces around us."
"We passed through some sort of Gate," Moonjumper added. "I sense quite a
different pattern of energies around us, as well. So what do we do now?" She turned
to Fizban and Carris Fallstar. "How do we go about investigating...whatever it is
that makes this not the Isle?"
Before the old wizard could answer, Carris said, "We were headed for the ferry
docks on the Isle, and we've come to a shore. Maybe there are ferries near here.
Let's find 'em."
"Why?" Scarlatti asked.
"Why not?" the elf countered. "It's a place to start."
Lirin Kiv?
The town that finally emerged from the fog bore some resemblance to Lirin Kiv,
but it was definitely not the Adantri town. The architecture they could see was
similar in style, but different in detail, the streets were laid out in different
curves and lined with different trees, some of them totally unfamiliar to Shylock and
Clemenda. Where the Temple of Mantor should have been was a temple to...somebody
else. By the symbols on the facade, some kind of solar deity, Shylock thought.
The carriage came to a stop, and the driver dismounted again, to peer anxiously
through the window at his passengers. "I don't know where we are," he admitted, "but
it's nowhere I've been before. Now what?"
"See if there's anything like an arena here," Shylock ordered. "If there is,
it'll be a point of contact, I think."
"Where do I look?"
Shylock bit back an exasperated comment which wouldn't help. The man was
stupid, but it would do no good to rub his nose in that dismal fact. "Look where you
would expect to find the Lirin Kiv arena, if this were Lirin Kiv and that was the
Temple of Mantor."
The driver clambered back onto his perch and set the horses in motion.
"Something this strange, Lady Sheila would have to know about it, wouldn't she?"
Clemenda asked. "I've always understood that she knows about every bit of magic
that's performed on the Isle."
"Maybe she's not paying attention," Shylock answered. His eyes gleamed at the
possibilities opened up by Sheila not paying attention. "She's got other things on
her mind, I suppose--the decline in the Arcanum and all that...." He frowned
slightly. "Wherever we are, THIS Arcanum hasn't declined!"

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Gerfel's Friends beats feet every time Dark Pantheon comes-a-callin'! Wow...I
never would have expected to hear a rumor like that! Now, if someone had said to me,
"Dark Pantheon warriors wear tutus under their armor," I would have laughed myself
silly and probably found it at least a little more believable. But Gerfel's Friends
avoiding Dark Pantheon? I didn't believe it until I saw the arena documents for
myself (of course, the arena paper-pushers didn't recognize me in my janitorial
disguise). I didn't bother making copies of anything, and have forgotten everything
I read about who was trying to challenge who and all that, so don't bother asking!
Only 12 challenges for the turn...that's a disappointment to be sure. C'mon,
Andorak, we can do better than that! Let's see some participation out there! And
don't you DARE forget the upcoming tourney...I expect great things from Andorak's
finest, including a few TC performances for King Mickeal and Princess Samarra...
ESPECIALLY for the Princess. Okay...on to those challenges, now.....
NEBBISH (60-1172) (45-56-1,217) of SAILS OF CHARON TV challenged INTENDRID
O'REILLY (11-2969) (48-44-0,263) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS. NEBBISH viciously subdued
INTENDRID O'REILLY in a 3 minute Challenge fight. Up 46! NICE!!! Very impressive,
Nebbish. Looks like Gerfel's Friends should have been avoiding YOU instead of Dark
Pantheon...
GRAA ROCKBROW (15-3121) (39-29-0,208) of HALL OF GIANT TV challenged DEMONFANG
(6-4891) (57-49-2,209) of DARK PANTHEON. GRAA ROCKBROW was demolished by DEMONFANG
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge melee. Up 1. Graa, Graa, Graa, Graa...and on a TV
challenge, too. Demonfang just plain destroyed you. Pitiful.
WISTERIA (11-3786) (13-0-0,101) of WHAT'S YOUR POISON TV challenged SANDS (11-
4123) (34-33-2,172) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. WISTERIA was vanquished by SANDS in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge brawl. Up 71!!! By the frosty beard of an ice-giant,
this was unbelievable! I mean, I know there are a lot of tournament fights behind
Wisteria, but to chance your 13-0 record against so highly ranked an opponent is
beyond my comprehension. I guess you figured a Scarlet Knight would be easy pickings
since Armalias doesn't pay as much attention as he used to, eh Ivy? I have it on
good authority that Sands isn't your average elf-on-maintenance and is actually quite
good, with at least one TV from when he was coming up in Aruak City. Still, I must
commend Wisteria for such a bold challenge! You're one brave Poison!
LITTLE SISTER (26-669) (46-45-1,199) of HEADBANGERS challenged SILENT LUCIDITY
(48-2586) (27-14-0,208) of PSYCHOTIC ENDEAVOR. LITTLE SISTER was devastated by
SILENT LUCIDITY in a 1 minute Challenge duel. Up 9. Not quite as exciting as
Wisteria's challenge, but the result was the same, at the challenger (Little Sister)
was destroyed by the challenged (Silent Lucidity) in a fight that was over so quickly
half the audience missed it.
CARRIS FALLSTAR (11-3471) (43-36-0,196) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged PRONTO
PONGO (26-3999) (44-33-2,198) of WARCKERS. CARRIS FALLSTAR devastated PRONTO PONGO
in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge competition. Up 2. In a pretty evenly matched
bout, Carris pulls out a great win by over-powering Pronto Pongo. I have it on good
authority (can you see how I like that phrase?) that Pongo was out drinking heavily
the night before, and that an undisclosed alliance mate of Carris Fallstar was doing
the buying. Just an observation I made at the Crimson Eagle.
GIGGY (26-728) (49-48-1,184) of HEADBANGERS challenged JESUS (82-5459) (23-13-
2,194) of RISEN FROM THE DEAD. GIGGY lost to JESUS in a action packed 3 minute
gruesome Challenge duel. Up 10. Jesus was banging Giggy's head against the arena
wall for the last minute of this one. The blood was everywhere. It took the arena
staff hours to get the white marble of our beloved Andorak arena scrubbed clean and
stain free. Next time, Giggy, make a better choice of opponents...Jesus doesn't like
it when someone challenges him.
GLEEMAN (11-4009) (31-25-0,193) of CARNIVAL challenged HEATHER (48-3062) (82-
137-7,195) of STARS. GLEEMAN narrowly defeated HEATHER in a action packed 2 minute
gory Challenge duel. Up 2. Another narrow margin in recognition, and another narrow
win for the challenger. At least these blood-letting matches are exciting! Congrats
to Gleeman on his win.
GIMETHATSHIELD (26-1306) (33-22-1,173) of HEADBANGERS challenged MOJO (66-3401)
(33-60-5,175) of X-FORCE. GIMETHATSHIELD overpowered MOJO in a popular 3 minute gory
uneven Challenge match. Up 2. Here we go again...and it's not like I'm not used to
seeing it by now, but it still hurts...like when your out at the tavern, and your ex
walks in with her new boyfriend, and makes it a point to hang all over him just for
your benefit...never mind. Gimethatshield pulls the rug out from under Mojo and
drops him for the win.
LITTLE BIG BOX (60-4965) (40-48-2,180) of BOXES challenged JE SUIS BIEN (26-626)
(67-38-0,180) of HEADBANGERS. LITTLE BIG BOX was subdued by JE SUIS BIEN in a 2
minute Challenge match. Even. I think that from now on, on these even challenges, I
just won't say anything nice or mean about either contestant. I'll just say "Even"
in an even-tempered voice without even blinking an eye.
MR BLACK (82-5468) (12-5-1,177) of FROM THE RESERVOIR challenged SALINE LAMORAK
(11-4261) (28-30-0,177) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. MR BLACK devastated SALINE LAMORAK in a
2 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. Even.
VISION (26-1573) (28-14-2,134) of HEADBANGERS challenged BLACKRAZOR (11-4091)
(32-36-0,135) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. VISION was viciously subdued by BLACKRAZOR in a 2
minute Challenge bout. Up 1. Blackrazor pulled off a win against challenger,
Vision, to make his record seem a little less pitiful than it looked before. Do you
all remember how silly his record was when he arrived here from Aruak City? Now it's
laughable...HA HA HA!!!
And finally, the results you've all been waiting for...the King's Sentinel's
bout:
FIRE MOUTH (25-2478) (37-27-0,215) of THE NATURALS challenged PRIMUS BOUND (40-
2996) (85-34-0,313) of SUPERIOR FORCES. FIRE MOUTH was overpowered by PRIMUS BOUND
in a 3 minute Challenge Title fight. Up an amazing 98 for a shot at the throne!
Fire Mouth drinks free for the next cycle, if he can get the bar after that grueling
loss. Better luck next time, Fire Mouth...hopefully we'll here from Primus Bound
that he's Primus bound at the split. No offense, but your fight ratio when compared
to your "peers" is just a little ridiculous, don't you think?

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Manager -- Did you pull your DM columns here as well to spite me for complaining
about your lack of contribution to Free Blades? Or are you really just lazy and
making up excuses? -- Rillion
Primus Bound -- Oh wow. I think you're finally getting ready to live up to your
name. From the results of our meeting in the past tourney I was misled into thinking
I'd be Andorak's deserving King's Sentinel by now. Your developmental progress means
we must all suffer the apathy of a silent King's Sentinel. If you are going to make
a mockery of Andorak's top post, you might as well go fight in Talahya. Furthermore,
know that if King's Sentinels were elected by popular vote, I WOULD HAVE BEATEN YOU!
-- Axly Himself
Demonfang -- Who do I have to bribe so that I don't get matched up with you? --
Sablon-O-Vlad, mgr. Headbangers
Smith -- Very entertaining fight! Thanks for teaching me a "thing or two." -- Vision
Saline Lamorak -- Now that's what I'm talkin' bout! -- Little Sister
Death Twit II -- Grrr.... -- Giggy
Generalissimo Puerco -- What's a Doc Steele? We used to have this Doc LeGrand
character in Caleam who had this whole reptile thing going on about 10 years ago, but
I figured it would never last.... -- S.O.V.
Pluto -- Good fight, but it was my day. -- Jester, Minstrels
Goku -- Your supply of medicine will be cut off. -- Lady Herbblood, Medicine Show
Andorak -- I officially pass the baton of "Prime Leader of Andorak" by reason of our
ID of 25-21. To the Headbangers 26/9. Your gifts of silver should now go to them.
-- Kottonkandy, Carnival 25-21
Schendirk -- My cross court backhand was too much for you. -- Stilts, Carnival
Artemis Enteri -- Leaping, leaping. Next time I will deal with all of your leaping.
-- Gleeman, with one "G"
Jupiter -- Yes Krill! A noble arena the city had. -- F-A'Krill, Andorian
B.Llud Pitt -- Few know it is more difficult to hold the bottom-ranked warrior
spotlight title than the top-ranked. Thus it has greater glory. -- F-A'Krill, all
knowing
Monica Virtueshield -- It was an honor to test myself against you, sword-sister. --
Leeta Stormrider
Stilts -- Should you be learning skills? They'll only confuse you. Trust me on
this. -- Schendirk
Quiche Lorraine -- Quiche is eggs and stuff, right? Real cats LOVE eggs. -- Pussycat
P.S. And winning. Why, I'm in reach of a winning record!
Pepsi -- I could've told you the "Blue" thing was a mistake. Go with the tried and
true. -- Llud
Dain Bramage -- Er, sorry about the "horrific power" stuff. Daisy says "Hi." --
Billie Lu
The Saint -- Ducks can do ANYTHING. -- Ski Mask, Founder and President, Ducks With
Swords
F-A'Krill -- I was supposed to be impressed? Oh. -- B. Llud Pitt

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
