Not in Zuwayza:
A deep drumming sound echoed through the house.
"That will be the Sultan's men--or the Temple Guards, even!--at the door," the
merchant muttered. "I dare not refuse them entry."
The merchant hurried away, and Tankesh dismissed the man from his mind. The way
his head ached, he didn't figure on wasting his efforts on peripheral puzzles. The
important thing was to get on his feet without falling down. He braced one hand
against the wall and pushed himself upward. After a moment, the room stopped
wobbling around. He took a careful step toward the small table that held his sword,
picked it up, and slung the belt around himself. Headache or no, he could fight if
he had to, and just having the sword at hand gave him confidence. He looked around
the room.
The doctor was tidying away all sign that someone had been here, straightening
the cover on the divan, scooping up a small cup and spoon, a bit of bloodstained
cloth, anything that might be out of place, and gathering it all into a small bundle
which he shoved into his doctor's bag. Not speaking, the man gestured for Tankesh to
follow him and darted out a door that had been concealed by a hanging curtain.
No, Tankesh corrected himself as he scrambled to keep up with the man, not
concealed. It didn't seem to be anything like a secret door, and the curtain was
probably merely to stop drafts. Well, whatever. He didn't suppose that mattered.
He would probably never see these people or this place again.
The doctor led him down a long hall; some of the doorways opening off it had
curtains for closure and others had real doors of wood. Even in what Tankesh guessed
was a service hallway, the doors were all surrounded by tiles painted with bright-
colored floral patterns, and the floor, also of tile, had a long strip of striped
carpet down it. The door at the far end was locked and bolted, but the doctor had a
key and let them out into an alley.
A blank-faced building on the side made a narrow path of black shadow, but for
the rest, the sun turned the alley into an oven. The doctor didn't pause but led him
onward at a brisk trot, around a corner, and in through another door, across a small
courtyard, into a dusty hallway, out another door, and on and on through a maze of
buildings and alleys. Tankesh wondered what kind of practice the man had that he
knew this maze so well. They saw few people in their rapid passage, all of them
heavily cloaked and moving away.
They ended up in another small courtyard, this one dominated by a spreading
cypress tree and a tiled pool of water with a fountain splashing gently into it.
"I will leave you here," the doctor said quickly. "The sage may be able to help
you return to your own world. Fare you well, Traveler, and may the Goddess smile
upon your going out and your returning." Before Tankesh could respond, he vanished
back through the gateway.
"So you are a Traveler, eh?" The voice came from the deep shade of the cypress,
unhurried and genial. "It's been a long time since I Traveled, though I visited many
worlds in my youth. Come sit here by the fountain and tell me how it is with you,
young man."
Tankesh peered into the shadow but couldn't make out more than a vague presence.
With a slight shrug, he moved closer, noting with relief that the air was distinctly
cooler under the tree. He sank down onto the rim of the fountain and squinted into
the shadow.
The sage was very old, a shrunken, withered figure barely visible among a nest
of shawls. How could he stand shawls in this heat? "What's going on?" he asked.
The old man sighed. "It's a time of change, young man. I have studied many
lifetimes and do not fully understand it. There is always the possibility of
Traveling from one world to another, but the choice of destination is ordinarily
restricted, and the passage is difficult. For some reason beyond my slender
understanding, this is changing...at least for now. A world of which we know
nothing, have never Visited--your world--is coming into conjunction with ours.
Travel is easy, even happening by sheerest accident. Thus, I gather, your presence."
"The doctor who brought me here said the same thing, more or less. But that
still doesn't tell me why ME, what happened to my companion, and how I get home!"
The old man laughed. "Why you and what happened to your companion, I cannot
guess. As to how you might get home--" He stretched one thin leg out in front of
him, and the sunlight burned on a crimson slipper with a curled toe. "I don't think
my shoes will fit you, but there are other ways. Quite simple, really. Come into my
terminal." He hoisted himself to his feet and headed for a door that was barely
visible under a deep arcade.

THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the King's Sentinel
I think Duelmasters Columns should be abolished. I mean, what's the point? In the
modern age, I know almost everyone who runs in my arenas personally, and if I have
something to say to them, I can look them up. Or post on the Roundtable or various
forums. What subject material can I write here that I can't say in a spotlight or a
personal ad?
Instead, I'm wasting minutes of my life writing this, when I could be studying up and
learning how to get better. All to appease a vocal minority of wannabees who
complain that the Duelmaster isn't writing because they seem to be incapable of
taking the throne on their own.
So let's just kill the columns. It's definitely used less than 25% of the time, and
it would save the Commission production/labor/ink costs, even if it's only a paltry
amount.
Manager & Primus Bound
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Welcome, one and all, once again, to the white sands of Andorak! They were
bloodied just a few times today, though not enough to require any trips to Lady
Greywand. 51 total fights including 19 challenges, so away we go:
MAUI WAUI (40-3518) (31-16-0,255) of TACO GODS TV challenged DIS-EMBOWEL (63-
2025) (36-33-0,262) of DIS-TEAM. MAUI WAUI demolished DIS-EMBOWEL in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge melee. Up 7 with the TV challenge. You might not have thought so
going in, but Dis-Embowel never had a chance in this one. The Sentinel's crew is
simply overpowering!
GRAA ROCKBROW (15-3121) (39-32-0,185) of HALL OF GIANT TV challenged DEMONFANG
(6-4891) (59-50-2,194) of DARK PANTHEON. GRAA ROCKBROW was defeated by DEMONFANG in
a crowd pleasing 2 minute Challenge duel. Up 9. Another ill-advised attempt to
upset Demonfang. Graa, I thought I said something to you once before...maybe that
was someone else....
CARNAGE XIX (20-3386) (40-15-1,214) of DEATH STUDS VIII challenged WADAS (25-
2311) (43-40-4,232) of BARONE. CARNAGE XIX devastated WADAS in a exciting 1 minute
one-sided Challenge fight. Up 18. Wadas...if you'd like a little advice, avoid
Death Studs (and any other of the mighty warriors fighting for The Sentinel). Just a
thought. Congrats to Carnage XIX on the up-challenge and win!
THE PIRATE (25-4572) (26-19-0,188) of SLY'S SLAYERS challenged FIRE MOUTH (25-
2478) (37-30-0,199) of THE NATURALS. THE PIRATE was viciously subdued by FIRE MOUTH
in a 18 minute Challenge brawl. Up 11. Not sure what's natural about a Fire Mouth,
but I'm sure The Pirate can tell us. How about it? In 30 words or less, please
describe your take on what a Fire Mouth is....
GIMETHATSHIELD (26-1306) (34-24-1,172) of HEADBANGERS challenged HEATHER (48-
3062) (82-140-7,178) of STARS. GIMETHATSHIELD narrowly defeated HEATHER in a
exciting 5 minute Challenge struggle. Up 6. Heather held out for five minutes, but
just couldn't hold onto her shield.
CORNFACE ROWTEETH (60-2765) (25-15-1,162) of 4000 BLOWS challenged LITTLE BIG
BOX (60-4965) (42-49-2,200) of BOXES. CORNFACE ROWTEETH was handily defeated by
LITTLE BIG BOX in a 1 minute fight. Up 38! Thanks for the brave challenge, but Doc
Steele's warriors are probably as good as The Sentinel's, so your chances, Cornface,
weren't any better with Little Big Box. Again, thank you for playing....
PARTY CRASHER (23-2941) (32-23-1,179) of SLY'S SLAYERS challenged FACE (25-2504)
(35-28-5,194) of THE NATURALS. PARTY CRASHER vanquished FACE in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge duel. Up 15. Face was later heard asking where the party was, not
realizing that Party Crasher was still standing behind him. He was knocked out for
the second time the same day.
CRASSUS (25-2674) (23-29-2,152) of BARONE challenged SHIVAA (26-3523) (91-65-
0,196) of WARCKERS. CRASSUS lost to SHIVAA in a action packed 1 minute Challenge
fight. Up 44! Shivaa was too much for you, Crassus; but you still drink for free
for the next cycle at the Crimson Eagle. I like your courage!
WOOHOO-WOOHOO! (40-3504) (32-18-0,155) of TACO GODS challenged SNOWY OWL (71-
3252) (44-45-0,179) of CALL OF THE WILD. WOOHOO-WOOHOO! was vanquished by SNOWY OWL
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Up 24. I was looking forward to this one
when I heard it announced, but then it was over before it started. Snowy Owl kicked
sand into Woohoo's face and that, my friends, was the end of that. No really...right
in the eyes...really!
RENSHAW (63-2033) (39-29-1,172) of BAILE BEAG challenged SALINE LAMORAK (11-
4261) (28-33-0,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. RENSHAW was overcome by SALINE LAMORAK in a
popular 2 minute brutal Challenge bout. Up 8. I really expected Renshaw to win this
one. Scarlet Knights haven't issued a challenge in so long, I just know they must be
on automatic. My thanks to Renshaw and his manager for paying attention to the
goings on, here in beloved Andorak.
JOE SATRIANI (11-4422) (19-22-2,107) of THE HEADCUTTERS II challenged HUMMEL
(14-1404) (38-72-2,165) of MIKES. JOE SATRIANI subdued HUMMEL in a crowd pleasing 1
minute Challenge competition. Up 58! Here's your challenge of the week! Not only
did the axeman from Aruak City challenge up 58 points, but the youngster had the
audacity to win! Drinks for free for you as well, Satchman!
BLITZKRIEG XXIII (60-5503) (18-7-0,91) of DEATH STUDS VII challenged BLACKRAZOR
(11-4091) (33-38-0,148) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. BLITZKRIEG XXIII viciously subdued
BLACKRAZOR in a exciting 4 minute Challenge battle. Up 57! I would offer up free
drinks here, but Blitzkrieg looks too much like his teammates and they'd probably all
take advantage of me and fool the bartender into thinking they're all the same guy.
Another big win for The Sentinel as a Scarlet Knight takes the fall.
THE NATURAL (25-4630) (20-5-2,93) of BARONE challenged GOKU (46-3655) (18-14-
2,99) of DRAGONBALL Z. THE NATURAL was outlasted by GOKU in a crowd pleasing 7
minute Challenge conflict. Up 6. Our longest challenge match of the turn, with the
Saiyan Goku having to use his Super-Saiyan abilities to overcome The Natural. Who
doesn't love Dragonball Z?
SHAW (25-2949) (25-20-1,69) of BARONE challenged DRIVEN (63-2398) (24-5-1,98) of
CAR AND DRIVER. SHAW was overpowered by DRIVEN in a crowd pleasing 1 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. Up 29. Shaw was Driven under foot in this one, never showing
any of his many talents as he was simply outclassed by the higher ranked Driven.
JUDAS PRIEST (40-3869) (17-13-0,62) of THAT 80'S METAL challenged LADY HERBBLOOD
(37-2376) (22-18-2,70) of MEDICINE SHOW. JUDAS PRIEST handily defeated LADY
HERBBLOOD in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge bout. Up 8. It's so nice to see a
priest who can take his message to the masses in such a way as Judas Priest did,
here. Lady Herbblood should try eating regular meals instead of relying on all those
strange concoctions she has at her disposal.
GREAT BEAR (74-2851) (16-11-0,59) of TOTEM challenged JOYCE (25-4732) (24-16-
2,80) of WINDY CITY WOMEN. GREAT BEAR was devastated by JOYCE in a exciting 1 minute
one-sided Challenge fight. Up 21. I just know I've witnessed this same match-up in
the past. I just know it. And I'm just as sure the results were exactly the same.
Weird.
ARMY OF ONE (25-4639) (19-8-2,41) of BARONE challenged AZAZEL (15-2562) (9-9-
0,74) of LORDS OF DARKNESS. ARMY OF ONE was overpowered by AZAZEL in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge bout. Up 33. Azazel wanted me to tell you all how he defeated an
entire army, so here you go. Way to go Azazel! Woohoo, you defeated an ENTIRE ARMY!
Happy?
And finally, the moment I've...errr, you've all been waiting for! For the Title
of King's Sentinel:
NEBBISH (60-1172) (48-56-1,262) of SAILS OF CHARON TV challenged PRIMUS BOUND
(40-2996) (88-34-0,362) of SUPERIOR FORCES. Up 100!!! And the results are in:
NEBBISH viciously subdued PRIMUS BOUND in a 8 minute Challenge Title fight. We have
a new King's Sentinel! Not only that, but The Sentinel manages this Sentinel!
Congrats to both on a job well done and a victory most deserved!
Until next time, I wish you all well and hope to hear from all soon....

Geesh, both of my losses come to bashers...this game is tough to swallow some times.
-- Sablon-O-Vlad
Ergot -- Yeah, that's right. Knock you down and decide I don't want to throw any
crits. Let's try that again. -- Je Suis Bien
Khalli -- Retirement. You know. Sitting at the beach, sipping on cold drinks. No
fighting. No sweating about training stats with a 14 will. Just enjoying the good
lookin' ladies. It could be worse. -- Giggy
There should be more than enough good looking ladies for the both of us right
here in Andorak. And besides, I know plenty of low will fighters who have made
their way all the way to Primus and beyond. -- Khalli
Mrs. Limeschultz -- Wow, do I feel like a practice dummy right now. -- Gimethatshield
Hummel -- Nice fight. Good to see a win every now and then. -- Vision
Man, just one turn with a winning record. Is that too much to ask for? I tell ya,
fighting with warriors from 10 years ago is tough. Burnt, and not all that good on
top of it. I need a beer. -- SOV
Leprechaun -- You look like a mouse, you act like a mouse, be damned if I won't hunt
you down like a mouse! -- Pussycat
The Gakker -- The best part of that fight was at the end, when you gakked on the
arenamaster's boots and he swatted you with the sword in his hand. -- Llud
Ogier -- Oh. At first, I thought you were a willow, but that's osier. Or, uh,
something like that. And I was all set to deal with a willow, but Danes are
different. Oh, well. -- Schendirk
Silent Lucidity -- Well done, but couldn't you try being less silent? -- Leeta
Warpath -- Talk about a mismatch, what are you doing in range of me? -- Daisy January
Dain Bramage -- Where are you? -- Daisy January
Dreamslayer -- You see how I am teaching you. -- Gleeman
Positive -- You owe me for one weapon. -- Stilts
Talisman -- Looked good. -- Jester
Saline Lamorak -- I am trying a new style. -- F-A'Krill, Hero
Jack The Ripper -- You got into a precarious position. -- Kottonkandy
Joe Satriani -- That's one for you. Next time we double the bet. -- Lady Herbblood

To All Managers -- I would like to take this time to announce that my alliance, The
Association, is no more. Due to the dead weight managers of the alliance and their
lack of participation, DarkSpirit and I have formed a new alliance: The Firm. We
have taken on two members so far and are looking for a few more. If you would like
to find out more about The Firm, you can diplo Dark Spirit, Unknowns XX in arena 15
or myself, Sungod, Sadists F2FII in arena 62.

Citizens of Alastari, a bright dawn has risen. While you slept, a pernicious
force has entered the once-fair City of Aruak. It fought alongside their treasured
warriors, it drank with their fans, and it slept with their women. Now the masks are
coming off.
Warriors, be afraid...be very afraid. After years of Andorian managers ranting
that Aruak is the safest city in Alastari, the Frothingslosh Syndicate has selected
Aruak City as the home for its next epic 'contest'--Murder by Numbers II. Our spies
have selected the warriors for extermination, and the executioners have had several
months to prepare. Now a new age of darkness will descend upon Aruak, as the
Syndicate and its allies bring an entirely new level of competition to the arena!
Downchallenges! Assassinations! Small poodles as hors d'oeuvres!
The Murder by Numbers II 'rules' will be announced next cycle. However, we
invite all managers, from all corners of Alastari, to come to Aruak City and take
part...in one way or another. Help defend the honor of a long heralded haven for the
pure, or join the forces of change in their siege of the ice-cream and cake
stronghold of the Dukes of Nerf-Dueling!
This exercise is not for either the faint of heart or the weak willed. Blood
will flow, brains will leak, and beer will be chugged. Either way, we welcome you
with open arms and gleaming blades.
This public service announcement has been brought to you by Frothingslosh Epic
Contests (tm), the number 86, and the letter 'K'.
The Frothingslosh Syndicate

* * * *The Third Annual Turf War* * * *
Yes, it's time again for alliances to go to war! TW3 will be held in DM 47
(North Fork) at a date to be specified later--right after Crip's Incomprehensible
Contest is over...but I'm sure everyone wants to get their teams there soon! Here
are the rules:
1. Each alliance must have a leader declare the arrival of his alliance. The leader
will be responsible for verifying any and all teams/managers who declare to the
alliance he/she is leading.
2. Each manager, team declaring for the contest must have approval of the leader,
donate one Roll-up Certificate ($5) to the prize pot (send it to me by diplo, by
snail, or a note to customer service), and declare his/her team by diplo, p-ad or
snail.
3. Each team may declare one warrior as champion. All points scored by a champ are
double!
4. Prizes are as follows (mostly...there WILL be some things added as the prize pot
grows with entry donations--this list is not final!)
* Highest scoring alliance -- Rename Arena 47 for a period of 6 months, one half
of the total prize pot donated; roll-up certs.
* The Alliance with the most returns from the DA will get to re-name the DA
monsters for a period of 6 months.
* The alliance with the most warriors listed as style masters will get to pick
the Alastari city/arena to host the next Grand Tournament.
* The warrior with the most front page honors/awards will have the Arenamaster
named after him for a period of 6 months.
* The Alliance with the most front page Honors/Awards will have the honor of
picking the *slow* arena to host the Fifth Annual Turf War.
* The team with the most listings as Style Master will find out the favorites of
one of their warriors.
* The warrior with the most listings as Style Master will fight at my expense
for five turns (I will transfer to the manager's account).
* The Alliance with the most kills will be able to re-name the stand-in warriors
for a period of 6 months.
* The warrior that scores the most total points will fight at my expense for 5
turns (I will transfer $7.50 to the manager's account).
* The team that scores the most total points will receive an extra share of
roll-up certs from the prize pot.
There may be more categories to come, and the prize pot still has to be
divided...I'm open to category/prize ideas--and further donations to the prize pot.
The contest will run for *TEN* turns; prizes will be awarded at the end of the
11th turn.
Scoring will be as follows:
* 5 points per fight, doubled for each of the following conditions met:
-- Two Alliance -- Champion
-- Challenge -- Two Champions
-- Bloodfeud -- Challenger losing
-- Kill
(Note: DA losses are exempt, but DA wins will be *tripled*!!! Ex: Happy
Slasher goes to the DA and dies, no points are lost. If he wins, his team scores 60
points! If he was a champ, he scores 120 points!)
Use the following chart to calculate scores:
Conditions Met: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Points Per Fight: 5 10 20 40 80 160 320 640
* Awards/Honors and Style Masters will each be awarded points also. Find the total
number of each (do note add Awards and Style Masters together) and consult the graph
below. Champs that score an award or style master count as two.
1 -- 5 7 -- 320
2 -- 10 8 -- 640
3 -- 20 9 -- 1280
4 -- 40 10 -- 2560
5 -- 80 11 -- 5280
6 -- 100 (x2 for each extra)
Note -- These categories *count as "triple"*--they will be figured for each team,
*AND* again for each alliance *as well as* for each warrior!
* Each and every mention in the Spy Report is worth 5 points...period.
* TVs will be scored on the same scale as Awards/Style Masters, but the total points
will be x10. TC's will be scored as TV's, but x10 more.
Number of TV/TC's Points Scored (TV/TC)
1 50/ 500
2 100/1000
3 200/2000
4 400/4000
+ x2/ x2 (for each extra)
Each alliance will start with 5000 points, scores for *fights* will be added to
the winner's total *AND* deducted from the losers.
Come one and all, defend your turf and the honor of your alliance...or your
own!

Assurnasirbanipal invites you to Talcama to participate in the third BATTLE
ROYAL contest. It is a Delarquan contest so brutal that even some of Talcama's most
notable managers will refuse to participate. The rules are simpler than any other
contest: You may not avoid any other contest team. There are no silly rules for who
can and can't compete. Any team in Talcama is eligible to compete. The scoring is
also quite simple (+1 for a win, +1 for a kill (+1 for the win), -1 for a loss) and
the first team to reach 25 points is the winner.
Scoring will be live--the results for the turn posted in the newsletter. The
winner will be able to fight their contest team in Talcama for free for 6 months but
more importantly will win a contest against some of the best managers who play the
game in one of the hardest contests in the game.
First turn for BATTLE ROYAL 3 is Talcama Turn 465, which is due August 30.
