THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the King's Sentinel
My fellow Andorians,
Lo and behold, even a rogue such as I can be trusted with such tokens as befitting a
King's Sentinel! While I served faithfully as the Captain of the (Home)Guard for a
number of turns during my career, this marks the first time in Puerco's career that
any of us Gerfels have sat at the top of this fine arena. Once upon a time, I was
regarded as second-tier, now I am my manager's premiere Lord Protector! Where's Duel
Bob now?! Ha!
To my fine opponent, Pigmy Rattlesnake, that struggle was one more to add to our
history of epic meetings. May we never fight less than four minutes!
I would like to use this opportunity to voice my support for Khalli, our spymaster,
and his arguments against such underhanded tactics as downchallenging. We are
meeting for these games in Andorak, the gladiatorial icon of our shared values as a
nation under our King. Let us seek to uphold those values rather than squander them.
We have years and years of fine Andorian tradition to uphold. Who will do so, if not
us? Those that set such traditions in place are long gone, so the responsibility
falls to us, and we will gradually pass them on to future cohorts of Andorian
Protectors. We should work to ensure that there is something recognizable to pass
on. But enough of that. However you see the world, share your thoughts in our
newsletter, so that some of the recently returned will not mistake us for being
apathetic.
For this turn, Ogier is my chosen opponent. May the best warrior address you from
this column when next we gather!
Axly Himself
King's Sentinel of Andorak
Thank you for your support. You don't know how much I appreciate hearing your
words. -- Khalli
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
"Are you happy to be getting back to Andor?" Warlock asked Crystal as they rode
the cobblestone road just outside the capital city of Andoria. They had been riding
for several days, a leisurely, uneventful trip, with frequent stops at various inns
and taverns along the way and a couple of meals shared with local farmers when they'd
been too far from a town or village when night drew close. The late summer weather
had been surprisingly mild, and the two of them had managed to stay dry all the way
from the Isle.
Crystal raised her eyes to the city that had been her home during her last few
years of service to King Mickeal, a quiet smile playing its way across her face. "I
guess maybe I am, Warlock," she replied after staring at the palace in the distance.
"I've lived here in the palace for a few years now, and though my duties have kept me
busy, I have enjoyed the involvement in our King's court."
"Though I suppose we won't have much chance to enjoy court while we're here,"
Warlock intimated, pointing with his chin at the cluster of tents in the distance to
the north of the city. The men and horses were all milling around in the distance,
but it looked to the wizard like they were preparing to march.
Crystal's smile didn't diminish as she, too, took in the scene. "You may be
right," she said, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek. "But I expect we'll have
one night here, at least..."
Warlock smiled as he turned his gaze back to the guards at the outskirts of the
city.

Princess Samarra was pleased with the small group she had assembled to
infiltrate Jurine. This would not be the first time that Andorian Lord Protectors
had gone into the Karnhorn pleasure city, but she honestly hoped it would be the
last. The last time, she had led the rather large group into the city in hope they
could rescue some of their fellows, including the Spymaster, Swift, from the clutches
of the royal torture-master. One of the Protectors she'd be sending had been
involved in that mission, which had started out as an investigation into fight
throwing by several teams in Jurine's arena. Another was a native of the city. A
third was included to add some magic to the group, though she wasn't sure just how
good an idea that was, with magic going haywire all over Ghea.
Alain, Anikan Silverhawk, and Earthquake.
The other four Andorians who would be making the trip were the trustworthy
gladiators who had returned one of her sons to her. Now, they would make the journey
to complete their initial task and bring her youngest child home. Monica
Virtueshield would once again lead the expedition, despite Alain's greater
experience. The assassin's skills were not in leadership, after all. Anikan was a
native of Jurine, as well as a well-known gladiator from that arena, and would be
needed to do most of the interaction with the people of Jurine. He had a personal
stake in finding Joakim as well, as he had been Zarhed's friend and bodyguard. He
had insisted he be included in the mission, and Samarra had welcomed him with open
arms, knowing what finding Joakim would mean to them both. He had specific orders to
go after the former Spymaster once her son had been recovered.
Renshaw and Mrs. Jones had performed excellently in the first attempt, and
Deadpool's walk with Ahringol had proven far too valuable for him to be left behind.
For these three and their leader, Monica, this trip was a chance to finish what they
started; but more than that, it was a chance at redemption. They felt terrible that
they'd been duped, and were upset that three of their companions from that mission
had all but abandoned them. It stung.
The Princess was on her feet in her familiar place gazing longingly out the
window when the four entered the room. She turned to see Deadpool enter last,
closing the door behind them as they saw their three new companions for the first
time. She breathed a sigh of relief as Alain and Deadpool, both old members of the
Andorian Assassins guild, shared a look across the room. Anikan met Monica halfway
across the room, offering a salute and a handshake. Earthquake joined him,
introducing himself as well. Monica completed the introductions and they all took
their seats.
***************************************************************************
Joakim sat in his cell, unable to come to grips with his predicament. How did
he go from rescuer to criminal, so quickly? He had done as instructed, kidnapping
both children and killing the Karnhorn Prince, who he'd been told was out of favor
with the Satrap as well as his own father. The only possible explanation for his own
incarceration and upcoming execution was a betrayal by the only person in the world
he'd ever been able to trust; and for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to
believe that Raven would ever betray him.
***************************************************************************
Well, I don't have any more to report on the goings on in Andorak and abroad, so
let's get to the fights for the cycle, what do you say?
LITTLE BIG BOX (60-4965) (45-49-2,221) of BOXES challenged TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD
(11-4304) (36-25-0,193) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. LITTLE BIG BOX demolished TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD in a 1 minute Challenge melee. Down 28. I won't bother chastising him
on this one, as it will do no good. Talisman, challenge back and let that wuss have
it!
CARNAGE XIX (20-3386) (42-15-1,233) of DEATH STUDS VIII challenged IN THE
AFTERNOON (82-10018) (17-9-0,237) of SUNNYDALE. CARNAGE XIX was defeated by IN THE
AFTERNOON in a 2 minute Challenge duel. Up 4. A nice effort, but In the Afternoon
must refer to an afternoon storm, since the only carnage was what was left behind
when Carnage lost the fight. Well played by both parties...an honorable duel.
PLUTO (68-7735) (51-47-2,222) of REAL FAKE CHARACTERS challenged MICHAEL
HONORBLADE (11-3300) (82-49-0,228) of KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE. PLUTO savagely defeated
MICHAEL HONORBLADE in a exciting 2 minute Challenge fight. Up 6. Wow! Not only did
Pluto get the win, but Michael about got his head handed to him in this one. Savage
indeed. Thanks to you, Pluto, for your honorable challenge and win!
JE SUIS BIEN (26-626) (72-39-0,226) of HEADBANGERS challenged DEADPOOL (66-2274)
(60-62-5,184) of X-FORCE. JE SUIS BIEN bested DEADPOOL in a popular 6 minute bloody
Challenge duel. Down 42. Tsk, tsk...and after the pleasantries your manager and I
exchanged in the personals. I can't say this is unexpected, though the fact that you
won was. That Deadpool is damned deadly dangerous, if you know what I mean. Just
remember, Je Suis Bien, I'll keep after you unless you mend your ways here in
Andorak.
GIMETHATSHIELD (26-1306) (36-25-1,191) of HEADBANGERS challenged JUPITER (44-
2554) (44-48-0,188) of SHERWOOD FOREST. GIMETHATSHIELD was savagely defeated by
JUPITER in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. Down 3. Another down by the same manager.
CARRIS FALLSTAR (11-3471) (45-38-0,195) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged POSITIVE
(26-3633) (79-66-0,207) of WARCKERS. CARRIS FALLSTAR viciously subdued POSITIVE in a
5 minute Challenge melee. Up 12. After five minutes of Carris pounding on Positive,
we were rewarded with the loss going to the least offensive of the two, with the most
offensive warrior winning out...well, that DID sound a little confusing, but I bet
you all got my point.
INTENDRID O'REILLY (11-2969) (51-45-0,210) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged
MERCURY (99-780) (46-41-5,226) of WAR SEEKERS. INTENDRID O'REILLY vanquished MERCURY
in a 2 minute uneven Challenge fight. Up 16. These are just good challenges. Not
only are the challengers challenging warriors above them, but they are winning!
SHIVAA (26-3523) (92-67-0,196) of WARCKERS challenged FIRE MOUTH (25-2478) (38-
32-0,199) of THE NATURALS. SHIVAA overpowered FIRE MOUTH in a action packed 2 minute
one-sided Challenge fight. Up 3. Doesn't matter if its up 3 or up 300...the
tradition in Andorak is...UP, UP, UP!!! Shivaa does well to taste victory as well,
with Fire Mouth coming out with the short straw.
QUICHE LORRAINE (46-3451) (26-17-0,164) of DEATHTONGUE challenged NOT LIKE YOU'D
KNOW (82-7050) (12-10-2,168) of MIKE THE HUNTER. QUICHE LORRAINE was overpowered by
NOT LIKE YOU'D KNOW in a 1 minute Challenge match. Up 4. Quiche made a good effort,
but was rebuffed by Not Like You'd Know, a Downchallenger last turn. Good try,
Quiche. Your Spymaster appreciates your efforts to set things right.
WOOHOO-WOOHOO! (40-3504) (32-19-0,151) of TACO GODS challenged PUSSYCAT (14-
3701) (40-42-1,174) of THE DOGHOUSE. WOOHOO-WOOHOO! handily defeated PUSSYCAT in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge contest. Up 23. A wonderfully managed warrior with a
wonderful strategy takes a wonderful win over a wonderful opponent. Here's hoping
learns were good all around.
RENSHAW (63-2033) (40-30-1,180) of BAILE BEAG challenged LANFEAR (52-2872) (29-
19-2,179) of INCARNATIONS. RENSHAW subdued LANFEAR in a popular 1 minute Challenge
brawl. Down 1. Not sure what to think about this one...might have been an old
challenge, especially since Renshaw didn't run last turn. I'll have to investigate
further.
GREAT BEAR (74-2851) (16-13-0,42) of TOTEM challenged PAHPAEL (37-4112) (13-7-
0,99) of ARCHANGELS OF BRIAH. GREAT BEAR was handily defeated by PAHPAEL in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge conflict. Up 57! This was my challenge of the turn, with
the challenger reaching a little too far. Congrats on your effort there, Great Bear.
Keep up the good work and you will one day be rewarded.
And for all the marbles in Andorak, we have a challenge match:
THE GAKKER (65-4886) (56-52-0,256) of CALM DOWN! challenged AXLY HIMSELF (11-
2363) (89-70-1,242) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS. THE GAKKER slimly lost to AXLY HIMSELF in a
2 minute Challenge Title fight. Down 14 for the title, so the Gakker is forgiven.
The point is moot, since Axly Himself proved himself deserving of the title King's
Sentinel by retaining the throne! Let's hear it for the boy!!!
Until next we meet in the funny papers...

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Note to everyone from your ever-lovin' Ed. -- Some content has been changed in
various parts of the newsletter to make it somewhat less inflammatory. This
isn't to say it's not inflammatory at all, or there'd be just about nothing in
the newsletter. If it keeps going this way, I'll get a lot more ruthless.
Everyone has had their say (and then some), so take it on the sands. -- Ed.
It is such a pleasure to hear Doc Steele (wasn't he the one Ace gave the size small
pink jock strap to?) rant and rave in his old-fashioned bully ways. Reading his "me,
me, me", and "I, I, I am the big kahuna in town" brought back the days of yesteryear.
Remember the bully actions of The Dark Circle? Ah, Doc, you give us so much to read
pleasurably when you go into your whining act. It helps us discern the real you.
Bring out the black boots and the goose-stepping and all that goes with it, The Doc
is back. -- Fandil The Wise of Ardivent, Consortium Elder
Spy Reporter -- Sir, your passion does credit to your heart, but I fear that it has
also over-ruled your head. Unless things have changed greatly in the past month or
so, you are a REPORTER, not a POLICY SETTER. I believe, and am prepared to live
with, the theory that any arena, basic or advanced, gets the ambience it wants and
deserves. If the majority of managers here seriously abhor down-challenging, I feel
sure that they will make their position known without any unbecoming urging from you.
And if they do not take such a horrified view of it, your demand that they "punish"
those who use this valid, legal strategic tool will fall on barren ground. Yes,
down-challenging is valid and legal. The Commission says so, and it is the
Commission that makes the policy for Duelmasters as a whole. Just as it is the
active managers of an arena who set, by consensus, and defend, by their own acts, the
tone or style of the arena.
It seems to me that by your demand for specific action against down-challenging,
you are revealing an unvoiced fear that the members of this arena do not take so
severe a view of the practice as you do. If you were confident that all other
managers would rise up in wrath at the merest whiff of a down-challenge, you would
not need to make such demands, would you? The response would come automatically.
Further, I question whether your demand that managers in this arena "punish"
other managers who are operating in a Commission-approved way is desirable or just.
These people--all of them--are paying to be here, and they are not breaking the rules
of the game. If the active managers of this arena dislike and resent down-
challenging, leave them to deal with it. That is not your job. Your job is to note
and report what happens.
And finally, I do not feel that such violently stated opinions and demands for
action will enhance the atmosphere of this arena. If I wanted to read rabid
denunciations, I would have a newspaper in front of me, not the Andorak newsletter.
-- Leeta Stormrider, Krill Cavalry and other teams
Leeta -- My voicing of the traditional practices in Andorak is nothing new.
Mickey did it. Swift did it. Managers either liked it or didn't, stayed or
left of their own free will. I understand that downchallenging is "legal"
within Duelmasters. And I also understand that I'm here to report and not make
policy; but isn't part of my job to inform the managers that choose to run here
of the long-standing traditions that go along with running here? Is it not my
job to protect the flavor of the arena I am responsible for? If not, then
Princess Samarra, Lady Greywand, or Green-Eyes herself needs to let me know,
because as long as I've been around Andoria (which is a very long time), things
have been as I have tried to represent them to the managers of Andorak. If I've
offended you, I apologize. I simply don't want another Darkholm on the Isle...
do you? -- Khalli
Doc Steele -- I wonder why is it all about you? You seem to feel you have to punish
everyone for your own short comings, please explain the need. Even as the top team
in this arena that is traditionally not a down challenging arena. Yes those who down
challenge here should be punished and as the top team you should be holding to the
honor and traditions of this arena. Both in here now and in Aruak City, you made the
claim "Your way or No way." Must you always over react to every situation? Maybe
you should re-read what you wrote so you can see what I am sure everyone else is
seeing in you.
"As the top team in Andorak, that means if anyone should set an example, it
should be me. Well, you can all start licking your wounds over a cup of tea or
whatever it is that you do, because the gloves are coming off for my stable! This
place just became Darkholm as far as I am concerned, and I will be flexing my evil
Delarquan muscle at every opportunity." Must everything be Darkholm to you? Are you
really that bitter?
Gee, poor Doc Steele. The whole world is against him. Can't we all do
something to help? Can we all chip in and buy him a Teddy Bear to cuddle with at
night? Or a quiet goldfish to keep him company? Or maybe a pretty shawl to warm his
countenance? Surely the rest of you are as worried for his health as we are? Please
send all donations to the "Help Preserve Doc Steele And Not Let Him Get Any More
Depraved Than Normal". We will all feel glad that we did. -- Yours against
downchallenging, Lenpro, Consortium Elder
Thank you for your words, Lenpro. All of Andorak needs to hear more voices like
yours. I look forward to seeing more from you and your Consortium in the years
to come. Welcome back!!! -- Khalli
Doc Steele -- One "stout, black hearted Delarquan manager" at your service. Let the
fun, downchallenges, and whining begin! -- Sablon-O-Vlad
Free Box -- Hey! No fair! You didn't even fight with a shield. How am I supposed
to take it if you don't even fight with one??!! -- Gimethatshield
What's a guy got to do to get a title shot around here? -- Je Suis Bien
Challenge up? -- Khalli ;P
Mercury -- We seem to match up often, unfortunately, with similiar results. --
Headbangers
Khalli -- You know, with all the fun getting ready to start here, I just might be
tempted to stick around a bit longer. Oh, and by the way, downchallenging has
nothing to do with the fact that this arena is too quiet and apathetic, which is why
we will most likely be leaving next split. No one seems to care about anything here.
We'll see if a few downchallenges can spice things up. C'mon PANSIES, bring the
heat! -- Sablon-O-Vlad
Again, I'd like to see you stay despite your downchallenging. I DO wish you
wouldn't do it, but I can't stop you any more than I can bring about world
peace. -- Khalli
Khalli -- Winning is not everything, you are correct; winning is the ONLY thing.
This is a play by mail computer based strategy game about gladiatorial combat. When
I want to role-play, I gather around a table with my friends and play D&D. If the
Gladiatorial Commission wants to make down challenges illegal, I will support that.
In the meantime, I will not give up a tactical advantage in a strategy game for your
meaningless role-playing drivel. I don't know what is more pathetic, your attempt to
imply my success revolves around down challenging; or your loyal player supporters
who hide their defeats behind excuses.
Now to your comments about stepping onto the sands to teach me humility. Let's
see if you will put something tangible on the line, to back up your flapping tongue.
It seems to me that since the Commission allowed you (an employee) to talk to me (a
paying customer) in the insulting and personal manner you did last turn; that they
might just allow me to make you accountable for your comments. How about we both set
up a team in a closed basic arena, just you and I and whatever Commission NPCs are
required when we can't match up. I propose we both start with the same starting team
set up, to minimize the luck factor. We will fight with NO AVOIDS, and NO DOWN
CHALLENGES until one of reaches 100 wins. If you win, I'll leave Andorak forever.
If I win, you will never complain about down challenging or killing or any Delarquan
behavior again in Andorak. And you will sign all your spy reports for the rest of
time as "Khalli, vanquished by Doc Steele in a one-on-one feud, and forever his
humble servant."
My Dad used to warn me when I was young, not to let my battle ship mouth get my
row boat butt in trouble. As a man of honor, surely you can not say the insulting
and challenging things you did last turn, and then refuse to me meet me in honest
combat. A lesson will be learned, why don't we see who teaches it? Refuse, and you
reveal your words and convictions to be hollow, and I suspect they will forever after
fall on deaf ears. -- Doc Steele
<chuckle> I don't know where to start. You address me in a personal ad as
"Khalli" and sign your name "Doc Steele" and then in the same breath tell me
about "role-playing drivel." I'm pretty sure that's not your real name. Sounds
like a manager persona to me (role-played). As for me being an employee, I
can't refute that.
As for your challenge, I'll admit I find it intriguing, especially if we were to
indeed start with the same setups, no DCing and no avoids. I'd have to throw in
no tournaments as well. Just good old fashioned basic...say, how about we get
really bold with your little fantasy and say no Dark Arena challenges, either?
You must play what you get? And rather than you leaving Andorak, I would ask
that you stay and become the new enforcer of Andorian ways, never again down-
challenging in ANY arena, and opposing all that do. Of course, all of your
personal ads would have to be signed, "Doc Steele, vanquished by a fluffy
Andorian spymaster, humiliated for all time."
Your father sounds like a wise man. My father wasn't so wise, he just beat my
battleship butt until it became a row boat. I'd gladly accept your challenge,
and do my level best to beat you...but you know as well as I do that the
Commission isn't about to allow such an abuse of their facilities. I'm
surprised that even you would ask for something like this. -- Khalli

Citizens of Ghea (only the ignorant fail to note Lirith Kai is not in Alastari),
no new day is rising, but the sun is setting on just another beautiful evening.
While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City.
Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all
gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they
had masks, who cares.
Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in
Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by
those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the
same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many
years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by
pests.
Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own
little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except
to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you
choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs.
Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed.
Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents
will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target
those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home.
So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous
Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and
bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.

An Announcement Concerning the Brotherhood of the Blade Alliance:
I have chosen to withdraw my membership from the Brotherhood of the Blade
alliance. The years I have spent in the alliance have been the best of my DM career.
I leave the alliance with many great friends and will always remain close to my
former brethren.
The Brotherhood of the Blade will not skip a beat without my membership. It
remains in very capable hands and its roster is among the strongest in the game.
With the return on some of its founding members to DM, I know the BOB will continue
to grow in strength and prestige in the years to come. -- The Sandman
