Skaithvarn:
Raoul glanced over his shoulder, but Dankilvan's mansion was already out of
sight around one of the street's numerous curves. He wasn't sure Berdan had even
noticed their departure yet; at least, the Fratsfan wasn't coming along behind them.
He shrugged and turned forward again. As he'd told Hallie, they could do this
mission without Berdan if they had to, and looked like that was the way it was going
to be. He looked at the Delarquan. "Tell us more about these vampires in Leemith,
doll. Are they going to be a problem to deal with? Do they attack chance
travelers?"
"Well...not instantly, anyway." Hallie pulled a couple of pocket-sized leather
folders from a belt pouch, handing one to each gladiator. "These are passes signed
by Lord Dankilvan and naming you as being on business for Istoreth. If you get a
chance to show the pass, that should give you some protection. Of course, if we meet
someone who's working for, oh, Sharvan or Pantiello, or even Ulm, maybe, then the
passes will get us INTO trouble...."
"Those being other city-states here, I take it?"
"Yep. The Ulmers are probably okay, they've got some kind of trade treaty with
Convincia. But if the Leemin don't want whatever it is your Peranis is selling, I
bet the Sharvanese will."
"These Sharvanese have Delarquan ties?" Jeri asked.
"No, ISTORETH has Delarquan ties," Hallie corrected her. "Sharvan isn't a
player in Trier politics. Yet. But they want to be."
"And Peranis' book of names and blackmail material would give them their ticket
to the party," Raoul finished. "Damn." He scowled at the crowded street and the
city gate ahead of them without seeing any of it. "What's the political stance of
this Leemith place?"
"Mostly they just want to be left alone," Hallie answered promptly. "If they
buy the list of names, it would be some lord doing it for personal profit, I would
guess. Nobody's ever suggested they want to be a power in the Trier."
Raoul nodded, his attention returning to his companions. "So Peranis might be
able to sell it in Leemith if he's in a hurry, but he'd probably get more money, and
cause more trouble for Andorian, if he takes it to Sharvan?"
"Yes. That'd be how I see it." Hallie glanced at Raoul. "Whose names are on
this list?"
"According to Berdan, noblemen, politicians, merchants, even some arena
managers--people who make a big noise in Andorian politics and the Andorian economy."
"People with secrets they'd pay a lot--or do a lot--to keep hidden."
"Right."
"Hmm." Hallie showed her own pass at the city's gate and indicated her
companions with a gesture. "They're with me." She led the way through the gate and
onto the open road.
"We might've asked how long ago Peranis went through," Jeri said, urging her
mount up beside Hallie's.
"I already did. Two days. It's one day from here to Leemith, another day to
Ulm, a third to Sharvan, moving at a normal traveling pace. Peranis may already have
made his deal in Leemith, if he found a purchaser there."
Raoul glanced at the sky. It was midmorning, clear and crisp. Maybe eight
hours of daylight left, he judged. "Let's pick up our pace a little, then, so we can
make inquiries in Leemith this evening."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
The road hugged the coast, sometimes running along the narrow, stony beach,
sometimes veering inland to cross small, steep-sided valleys, occasionally clinging
to a cliff above the water. They met no one coming from the south, and were
overtaken by no coming from behind them. There were no villages or inns along the
road. A dense pine forest covered most of the land near the road.
"You could BELIEVE in vampires in a place like this," Jeri muttered, twisting to
reach the cloak tied behind her saddle. The temperature had dropped steadily all
morning, and now, looking north, she saw why. A bank of clouds filled the northern
sky with shades of slate and charcoal.
"Of course. What's to disbelieve? I never argue with the facts, doll," Raoul
said. He glanced over at her--they were riding all three abreast--and followed her
gaze northward. "Damn. Any place along here where we could take shelter?"
"Not that I know of," Hallie admitted, squinting at the clouds uneasily. "We
might come across something, I suppose, but would YOU trust any shelter you found
along here under these circumstances? Bound to be a disaster waiting to happen."
"We don't have much choice," Jeri argued. "If we can find ANYTHING, a house, a
ruin, a CAVE, even, I'm for it!" She kicked her horse into a better pace. "We know
there's no shelter behind us, almost all the way back to Istoreth, so--" The horse
seemed to share her dislike of storms and willingly shifted into a pounding gallop
down the hill into the next little valley.
Almost hidden among the trees was the curved stone wall of a stubby tower.

Not Lirin Kiv:
Shylock, who had been lurking behind a hedge of rosebushes as Master Dan Shao
explained the war with the Grey Witch to Clemenda, frowned and sank down onto a handy
bench. This would require thought. This "Grey Witch of the East" sounded nearly as
powerful as Sheila Greywand, and if that was the case, she was a threat to his plans.
She would have to be removed--which had the added advantage that it would apparently
make him a hero to these people. Or else he would have to write off this world as a
place to establish himself and find some other. Because he had no intention of
sharing power....
The thing to do, he decided, was to visit the home city of this Witch. He
didn't have to actually meet her to discover just how much of a danger she might be.
But he had to be closer. And fortunately, there was an obvious reason for the
journey: He, and also Clemenda, which would get her out of the hands of that cursed
Master Dan Shao, would be seeking aid in finding and closing the Gate that had
brought them here. An obvious reason, and one that no one could fault.
He would propose the plan to Dan Shao immediately. No point in wasting time.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't see why we had to rush off like this," Clemenda muttered. "Another day
or two wouldn't have mattered."
"It might matter," Shylock assured her. "With magic, you can never tell about
things like that. It MIGHT matter." He drew her down onto the bench beside him,
smiling at the water that separated them from Master Dan Shao. More water every
minute. "Besides," he said, "I promised you dinner in Talahya, and I can fulfill
that promise till we get home."
"But the Gate we came through must have been back there on that island!"
"Gates are magic and don't always follow linear logic, my dear."
"But--"
"And besides, Dan Shao sent men out to search the island, and they reported that
the Gate is gone. Or at least closed." He shrugged. "So we need to consult someone
who understands the magic of this world. Dan Shao said the greatest magician or
wizard or whatever you want to call her, the Grey Witch, lives on an island--Thallia,
it's called--to the east."
Clemenda sighed. "Okay, I don't argue with your logic, I guess. But I hope
it's not FAR to the east, because I don't like sailing." She swallowed twice and
moved back toward the rail, leaning over it. "I really don't...."
*** ***** *** ***** ***
"I don't know how far it is to Thallia," the ship's captain said. "I don't sail
there. Just the Irindan Sea, and to the Pillars of Gold, the gates of the Middle
Sea, you know, no farther." He gestured toward the east. "It's dangerous out there!
Our Sea Patrols keep order in the Irindan, but the Middle Sea is full of pirates.
Dangerous place, and you'd do better not to go. Stay in Lirith Kai. No place else
is as good anyway."
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Thirty-seven fights out there this turn, I'm so impressed. Can we please speak
to our friends and enemies and try to get that number back above 40, hmm? No dead
this time out, which is a good thing for the holiday season. The King's Sentinel
decided he wasn't about to sit idle, so issued a challenge in defense of his throne.
The result? You'll have to wait for that. Did we have any downchallenges this
cycle? Read on....
GOOD OL' HERB (77-2647) (51-37-1,193) of SUPERIOR FORCES 2Q TV challenged JE
SUIS BIEN (26-626) (77-40-0,256) of HEADBANGERS. GOOD OL' HERB was devastated by JE
SUIS BIEN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Up an truly amazing 63! My
thanks to Good Ol' Herb for keeping Je Suis Bien from DCing, at least...lol. Well
fought, even if you were devastated, Herb. Your drinks are on me for the next month!
OGIER (30-2493) (48-29-1,213) of THE LONGING challenged MERCURY (99-780) (48-45-
5,221) of WAR SEEKERS. OGIER vanquished MERCURY in a popular 1 minute gory
mismatched Challenge brawl. Up 8. Mercury was lucky to walk away from this one
without a visit to Sheila! Well done, Ogier, if a little bloodily done.
DIS-MOUNT (63-1970) (47-21-1,211) of DIS-TEAM challenged SILENT LUCIDITY (48-
2586) (33-20-0,217) of PSYCHOTIC ENDEAVOR. DIS-MOUNT subdued SILENT LUCIDITY in a 2
minute Challenge competition. Up 6. Nice to see one of Boyd's warriors in the
rankings, though I must admit that I don't know if Boyd owns her contract any more.
If so, he needs to wake up as Dis-Mount handed Lucidity her pretty little buns.
GIMETHATSHIELD (26-1306) (39-28-1,203) of HEADBANGERS challenged JUPITER (44-
2554) (47-51-0,218) of SHERWOOD FOREST. GIMETHATSHIELD was devastated by JUPITER in
a 2 minute one-sided Challenge duel. Up 15. Thanks for the double-digit challenge.
Congrats to Jupiter for staving off those advances and holding onto that shield!
THE 'STACHE (40-2048) (40-39-2,195) of TACO GODS challenged JESUS (82-5459) (29-
19-2,194) of RISEN FROM THE DEAD. THE 'STACHE slimly lost to JESUS in a popular 3
minute Challenge competition. Down 1. Unbelievable. The Sentinel used to be so
Andorian....
CARNAGE XIX (20-3386) (43-17-1,200) of DEATH STUDS VIII challenged BUTCH (66-
1831) (73-72-4,205) of THE INQUISITION. CARNAGE XIX handily defeated BUTCH in a
action packed 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. Up 5. Too bad Butch didn't smack
little Carnage around like a little eighty pount weakling. Better luck next time,
Butch. Carnage, thanks for the UC.
DIS-EMBOWEL (63-2025) (42-36-0,206) of DIS-TEAM challenged TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD
(11-4304) (39-28-0,208) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DIS-EMBOWEL was vanquished by TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD in a 1 minute Challenge fight. Up 2. Dis-Embowel makes it 1-1 for Dis-
Team on the challenges, losing his UC to Talisman Shieldguard. What is it with these
Scarlet Knights and their names, anyway? I think every one of them is pushing the
limit on name length....
GOOSEBUMPS (41-3112) (48-30-0,191) of SWEET SILK challenged QUICHE LORRAINE (46-
3451) (27-22-1,192) of DEATHTONGUE. GOOSEBUMPS defeated QUICHE LORRAINE in a 2
minute Challenge fight. Up 1. Sorry, Quiche...you seem to have given up too much in
experience. Better luck next time. Goosebumps...something we all get that we wish
we didn't.
RENSHAW (63-2033) (41-33-1,181) of BAILE BEAG challenged SHIVAA (26-3523) (94-
71-0,186) of WARCKERS. RENSHAW was overpowered by SHIVAA in a popular 1 minute one-
sided Challenge melee. Up 5. Renshaw gave it a go, but Shivaa (I LOVE that name)
was too much for him. Don't sweat it, Ren...your mind is elsewhere with that little
mission you want to take that the King is holding you back from. Chin up!
PEPSI (68-8510) (38-22-0,193) of OVERWORLD challenged HEATHER (48-3062) (84-147-
7,193) of STARS. PEPSI savagely defeated HEATHER in a crowd pleasing 2 minute bloody
Challenge match. Even.
VISION (26-1573) (33-21-2,173) of HEADBANGERS challenged HUMMEL (14-1404) (40-
79-2,163) of MIKES. VISION unbelievably bested HUMMEL in a exciting 4 minute bloody
Challenge battle. Down 10. Typical Headbangers' strategy here, only this time the
poor recipient had a LOT more fights. Hope you learned well, Vision...you'll need
those skills at the rate you're making enemies.
WEBSTER (41-3848) (34-28-2,168) of ACTION TOYS challenged MRS LIMESCHULTZ (46-
2809) (50-56-1,183) of DEATHTONGUE. WEBSTER beat MRS LIMESCHULTZ in a crowd pleasing
2 minute gory Challenge conflict. Up 15. Webster made it look easy as he pummeled
the Mrs into submission with the bloodiest beating of the cycle.
BLITZKRIEG XXIII (60-5503) (20-8-0,137) of DEATH STUDS VII challenged PUSSYCAT
(14-3701) (42-46-1,156) of THE DOGHOUSE. BLITZKRIEG XXIII was viciously subdued by
PUSSYCAT in a 2 minute Challenge bout. Up 19. Pussycat gets the big win and the
appreciation of the crowd this time around. Pussycat gave her best effort, and Blitz
was outclassed. Pussycat took care of business.
BABY (43-2863) (17-7-2,132) of DARK SIDE challenged GOKU (46-3655) (23-18-2,135)
of DRAGONBALL Z. BABY handily defeated GOKU in a crowd pleasing 1 minute mismatched
Challenge bout. Up 3. Baby took one look at Goku's hair and had a fit, pulling and
biting and screaming, forcing Goku laughing to his back where the officials thought
he'd given up...when in fact he was just laughing too hard. Nice strategy, Baby.
And for the coveted position of King's Sentinel:
EARTHQUAKE (60-1468) (106-65-1,261) of NATURAL DISASTERS challenged MR BLACK
(82-5468) (16-5-1,223) of FROM THE RESERVOIR. EARTHQUAKE luckily beat MR BLACK in a
exciting 7 minute gory Challenge Title melee. Down 38. Instantly forgiven, since
the King's Sentinel can only challenge down; and because Soultaker is such a putz,
it's impossible to be mad at him.
Thanks to all who issued challenges and personals this turn. Now if we can just
get some spotlights out of everyone....

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Earthquake -- Congrats on the throne. I'm coming for you, punk. -- Je Suis Bien
Heather -- Nice fight there, old girl. Care to make it best two out of three? --
Vision
Blackrazor -- Give it up, it's mine, all mine. -- Gimethatshield
Sands ( Doltboy ) -- Perhaps you should use a shield! That way I could take it. --
Gime
Khalli -- Ah...you warmed my heart to say that Je Suis Bien was "well known". Must
be the season for giving. -- Sablon-O-Vlad
Well known in Andorak might not mean much if you were in Darkholm. -- Khalli
I don't know about you all, but I sure was happy to see some of those warriors leave
for Gateway. Don't let the door hit ya, and all that.... -- SOV
Mr. Black -- From a reservoir, eh? Kind of like the Creature from the Black Lagoon?
-- Llud
Shivaa -- Not today. -- Leeta
Smith -- You should be called "Anvil," given the way I hammered you. -- Pussycat
Helio -- Acceleration as in how? -- Schendirk, genuinely curious
Dis-Embowel -- You have talent, but also a height problem. -- Lady Herbblood
Artemis Entreri -- Good luck in Primus. No Primus for me. I've a long term contract
to remain here. A tourney prize that I won long ago. -- KottonKandy
Demon Fang -- I told you that name of yours had to go. No way you could hold the
"Sentinel" title in Andorak with that name. Why, oh why, didn't you listen? --
KottonKandy
KottonKandy -- Some just will not listen. -- Lady Herbblood
Earth Quake -- Congrats on 'Sentinel'. -- Carny
Ahhhhh, some new blood arrived. Our gain. -- Carny
All -- On 16 December, please be thinking of me as I will be in Harrisburg, PA,
experiencing the once-in-a-lifetime Trilogy Tuesday! If you don't know what that is,
let's just say this: I read the greatest fiction of the 20th century for the first
time when I was 8 and waited 25 years for the movies. -- Armalias

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager
13 November 2003
All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex

Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
