Valamantis:
Hallie O'Dene did not stay in Valamantis. She hadn't been able to get an
audience with the ruler of the city-state, Garlor Shanmarrik, and the clerk to whom
she had given her warning had been...disbelieving. Had, in fact, threatened her with
imprisonment if she "stirred up unrest." A very proper bureaucrat, he'd been.
Hallie considered slicing off his ears and nailing them to the wall, or possibly
nailing the man's ears to the wall without slicing them off, but such action would
serve no purpose but to express her anger, so she didn't. There really wasn't any
point in that. She gave her warning to Arenamistress Sitalva, who was at least
polite, and then went on her way. Carefully circling wide around the ruins of Old
Valamantis and ghosts of the ancient city that came and went unstably above them.
The people of Valamantis, in the person of the Lord's clerk, had chosen to ignore her
warning, and there were others she had to find and warn, others who might listen.
Arenamistress Sitalva did not exactly believe Hallie's warning about the danger
from the Bloodgames, but she didn't disbelieve, either. She had already seen the
mirage-like ancient towers above the bloody ground. She had seen those ghostly
towers before, after other Bloodgames, had accepted them as a normal illusion there.
Maybe she needed to re-think "normal."
She couldn't imagine anyone resurrecting Old Valamantis for any kind of GOOD
reason.
The oldest levels of the city were Folstrom.
And saturated with dark magic.
Mordant:
Mordant was like a stirred up hive of bees, full of activity, and hostile to any
stranger who had the misfortune to get in the way. She guessed that she wouldn't
have any more luck getting in to see Queen Talissen of Mordant than she had in
Valamantis. Which was frustrating, since it was a serious warning she had to
deliver. Well, she hadn't expected this to be easy....
After a moment's thought, she headed straight for the arena, bypassing the
palace entirely. There would be people who'd listen to her at the arena, because she
was one of them. Kakar was arenamaster in Mordant, she'd met him once. A grim man,
but who wouldn't be if they had to live in Mordant? She avoided looking at the
pitted black stone that most of the city was built of, and the windowless
architecture. The Mordanti were a grim people all around.
The arena was seething with activity and speculation, though it wasn't fight
day. Rumors were flying; before she managed to locate the arenamaster, Hallie heard
seven different versions of "an attack on the Queen!" which had been foiled by a
gladiator, or maybe more than one gladiator, or maybe it had been made by a
gladiator, or only reported by a gladiator, or.... The attack on the Queen, if it
had happened at all, was the main topic, but there was a froth of other rumors in the
background: monsters in various likely or unlikely places, out in the swamp, down in
Valamantis, in the Syrinwald lake, or up in the mountains. A war that might or might
not be happening between two different kingdoms in the south, and even the supposed
participants kept changing--Trocar, Rocanis, Xochithlan, the wild Rirorni. Banditry
around Tricorus; she shrugged that one off. There was always banditry around
Tricorus.
Arenamaster Kakar was closeted with a sober looking man, tall for a Kannar, and
richly dressed. Kakar didn't actually refuse to listen to Hallie, but he made it
clear that he didn't have much time to spare.
Hallie shrugged. The way things had been going since she'd set out to spread
the warning, his attitude was no surprise. She wondered in passing whether Khaldren
could have managed some kind of spell that made people unwilling to listen. Not that
it mattered at the moment. "I bring word of a powerful wizard who has come out of
the past to spread disaster in our time," she began. "He is a wizard from drowned
Krael, and he claims the intention to resurrect Celestinvael and other lost cities
and build a new empire in Alastari."
The tall man leaned forward, suddenly frowning. "Celestinvael is five hundred
years dead," he stated. "How can this be 'resurrected'?" Celestinvael was also,
Hallie knew, the closest of the dangerous ruins to Mordant, unless you counted Old
Valamantis--which Khaldren hadn't mentioned.
"I'm no wizard," she answered. "I don't know. But he stated his intention to
use 'blood magic' to do it, which he believes will work even with the Arcanum in
flux." She shrugged. "I don't know about magic, but he seemed confidant, and I saw
him work spells of great power."
"No doubt we've mages around who can confirm or deny this possibility," the tall
man said. "I will carry the warning to Queen Talissen and set our magicians to
work." Seeing her surprise, he added, "I am Allech Rabo, Her Majesty's Herald. I
have the authority to take these steps."
"Good! You might pass word to Valamantis, too--I couldn't get to see anyone but
a damned clerk. If it's blood magic at work, well, there was a lot of blood spilled
in Old Valamantis just over a month ago--"
"Mordan!" The Herald leaped to his feet. "The Bloodgames! If blood magic
still works, then the danger is extreme! I must go to the Queen at once!"
"And I will speak to the gladiators of this city about the dangers ahead," Kakar
said when the Herald had gone. "Doubtless they will be called upon to take arms
against enemies of Mordant."
Iaye:
The first ground tremors made people uneasy, but no more than that. There had
been small earthquakes for months now, mostly centered on Seam and its underground
disturbances. They posed no threat to the island, except in the case of those boats
who were just coming into the docks when tremor-waves hit. And even that...the
sailors of Iaye were skilled, and they had learned to deal with it.
But the mild tremors didn't stop, they were replaced by serious jolts, and the
ground underfoot shivered like jelly in a bowl. All the sailors who could took their
ships out of the harbor and around the island toward the center of the Trier. No one
wanted to get caught by a bigger wave than usual and shoved onto a rocky shore.
Once the ships were safely away from the land, alarm turned to eager
speculation. Did this herald new geysers for Seam? Would a volcano erupt and
destroy the town entirely? Bets were placed. After all, Seam wasn't THEIR town....
Or maybe this quake would strike a little closer to home, like the one that had
cracked open the Ogre's Tomb in Point. That thought sobered people. There had
been...things in the Tomb, and it had taken all the warriors who could reach Point to
deal with them. What else might be down there, to be released by a fresh earthquake?
They didn't really want to know.
Most of the ships were strung out parallel to the coast north of Point and Iaye.
Far enough apart not to damage each other if something went wrong, close enough to
pass messages along. The message that came up from the southern end of the line near
sunset was unexpected, and more than a little alarming. Everyone knew there were
ruins under the lake between Point and the island of Iaye. But nobody had expected
them to rise.
And none of the half-remembered stories of Krael made people happy about the
great city's reappearance.
REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Andorian Eye of the Storm Episode
Lights sparkled in the room as the Protectors from Andorak gathered their things
and made ready to leave. Shatterstar hadn't given them much time, so they were
feeling a little rushed and were dropping things and picking them back up and rushing
around asking where "this trinket" or "that weapon" had gone, or if anyone had seen
"this piece of armor" or "that wineskin I found." The Andorian General stood with
arms folded across his chest, leaning against the wall near the Gate, watching it all
in disgust. He'd not wanted to spring this on them, but Swash had left him little
choice since he had been about to use this to undermine the elf's authority. All of
his companions weren't soldiers and he wasn't sure of their willingness to follow him
simply because he'd been placed in charge by Governess Samarra and King Mickeal. He
knew that a few of them, the "free thinkers", might have been just as happy having
Swash in charge of things, and that would have split the group, dividing them in a
way that might have allowed the enemy on the other side of that Gate to conquer them
easily.
Did he even know for sure that there was an enemy on the other side of the Gate?
Everything pointed to that being the case, but he still wouldn't know for sure until
they stepped through. He wished he'd had more time to prepare, to brief his troops
(as he saw them) on what to expect and what tactics to use as they passed through the
Gate. He could only hope it wasn't a trap and charge bravely forward. Even if it
were a trap, they would have to try fighting their way through it, as this was their
last hope.
"We're all ready, Benji," Phantazia said at his elbow, breaking him out of his
thoughts. She stood armed and armored, her blonde hair falling freely to her
shoulders. "How do you want to...."
Before she could finish, Swash stepped forward and drew his sword, advancing
purposefully on the Gate. "Here goes nothing," he said to them, winking at Camisole
as he quickly moved into the Gate and disappeared.
Shatterstar watched him go without saying a word, knowing without a doubt that
the man had just stolen the last bit of control he'd had on the situation. He could
see the breakdown of discipline in the faces of all those around him. Phantazia was
fuming, and it took a hard look at his sister to keep her from chasing the pirate
through the Gate. Jhadzia and Chi'en stood somewhat to the side, looking at him for
guidance, awaiting orders like good soldiers, but also confused as to why they
weren't forthcoming. Sayn Vann showed little or no emotion, save for the slight
slacking of the man's proud shoulders. He understood all too well what Swash had
done by not waiting. Lady Hawke stood stock-still and said nothing, but her body
language told the general all he needed to know...she wanted to follow. Calth stood
looking at Phantazia and Shatterstar, a clouded look of confusion and indecision on
his face before he, too, started for the Gate. Camisole was a step ahead of him,
moving deliberately for the Gate with a determined expression on her fair features.
"Stop!" Shatterstar barked as he did step forward, raising a hand to accentuate
his order. "We must stay together if we are to make it through this."
"How many times have we heard that over the last year," Calth said, his voice
carrying a hint of annoyance. He moved to take the Gate again until Phantazia
stepped in front of him, bring him to a halt.
"If we are to stay together, then we must go after Swash!" Camisole said, not
slowing but hurrying forward.
Shatterstar moved to block her, raising both hands before him, patting the air
to try to calm the priestess. "And we will go after him, but we must be organized
about it," he said, his tone taking on an air of command that comes from years of
leading troops. He knew he must be decisive to minimize the damage Swash had done,
so he made snap decisions and called out the orders. "By the numbers, people. One
at a time as I call your name. Through the gate, then into a defensive position to
the left of the person who went in before you. If there's combat already engaged
when you get through, engage the enemy with no quarter. Stay together and do not
separate for any reason."
He turned to face Phantazia and they shared a look of concern at the situation,
neither sure of what might be happening but knowing that someone had to go through
first. If there were enemies there, Swash would have set them on full alert and the
first person through was likely to be full of arrows before drawing their first
breath. "Lead the way, sister," he said with a nod of his head. Phantazia moved to
the Gate and was gone.
"Jhadzia, Chi'en, Calth, Camisole, Sayn Vann, Lady Hawke," he barked out their
names, sending all of them through first before he himself stepped through the Gate,
which closed behind him with an explosion so severe it started a chain reaction of
violent tremors that destroyed the small island and sank the Ice Palace into the
frigid waters.
===================================================================================
Not very many fights out there tonight, with a lot of Andorak's finest sitting
on the sidelines for undisclosed reasons. I'm afraid to ask why, but since it's my
job, WHY? There were only a few challenge matches this time out, so we have very
little to talk about in that regard. Oh, and NO downchallenges from the Headbangers
this turn!!! Ironic, considering the personals...but I don't want to spoil those for
you, so read on. No deaths this cycle, which is better than lately.
Anyone interested in having their warrior involved in some "slice of life" spots
in the Spy report need only e-mail me at khallidyreel@aol.com with census data and
you will have your name in lights. At least you'll get you guaranteed 15 minutes
that way....
Okay, now that that's over with, let's get to the fights....
SHIVAA (26-3523) (97-75-0,201) of WARCKERS challenged SHERRI (82-15114) (13-14-
0,215) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3201. SHIVAA subdued SHERRI in a exciting 1 minute
Challenge melee. Up 14. Shivaa chooses a warrior from a maintenance team and pulls
off the lopsided victory. Congratulations on putting Sherri in her place.
QUICHE LORRAINE (46-3451) (28-28-1,197) of DEATHTONGUE challenged GOKU (46-3655)
(26-26-2,199) of DRAGONBALL Z. QUICHE LORRAINE was defeated by GOKU in a 2 minute
Challenge duel. Up 2. Very similar records, very similar recognition, very good
fight. Goku wins the two minute thriller despite Quiche putting on such a fine
display of skill and determination. Congrats to the challenged this time!
MRS LIMESCHULTZ (46-2809) (52-61-1,190) of DEATHTONGUE challenged SANDS (11-
4123) (39-51-3,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. MRS LIMESCHULTZ was devastated by SANDS in a
1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. Up 5. Another close call, though the Mrs.
certainly had the fight advantage on paper. Sands, on a losing streak here lately,
managed to pull off the upset and defeated the more experienced Mrs. in short order.
Thanks to Mrs. Limeschultz for the challenge and Sands for the excitement.
POSITIVE (26-3633) (87-71-0,191) of WARCKERS challenged SALINE LAMORAK (11-4261)
(32-49-0,194) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. POSITIVE luckily beat SALINE LAMORAK in a crowd
pleasing 7 minute Challenge match. Up 3. Another of those "monstrous" challenges
we've been enjoying this cycle. Monstrous is perhaps the most appropriate term I'll
ever come up with for so boring an affair as this one. Saline looked marvelous as
she danced around Positive, who simply stood there without bothering to even turn
when being circled. I never saw anyone take such a beating without dying, yet
Positive managed a win. Remind me to check for a ring of regeneration or something.
THE PINK RANGER (68-9166) (30-22-1,174) of SUPERIOR FORCES X challenged GIGGY
(26-728) (50-50-1,196) of HEADBANGERS. THE PINK RANGER won victory over GIGGY in a
crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge fight. Up 22! If this is the challenge of the
turn, I'll be sick. It took 3 minutes for "Pinky" to beat "Gigli" for the "biggest
challenge (that didn't matter) of the turn" prize. Well, almost the biggest....
BOOMER (20-357) (23-12-0,113) of THE BLUES challenged SMITH (14-1282) (42-86-
4,147) of MIKES. BOOMER beat SMITH in a 2 minute Challenge brawl. Up 34! Now THAT
is excitement! HUGE challenge followed by big victory equals a very pleased crowd
and spymaster! Well done Boomer, YOUR drinks are on me at the Crimson Eagle.
BRICK (20-389) (34-28-0,127) of THE BLUES challenged PUSSYCAT (14-3701) (44-51-
1,173) of THE DOGHOUSE. BRICK viciously subdued PUSSYCAT in a action packed 4 minute
gruesome Challenge fight. Up 46!!! Here's another GREAT fight. Big UPCHALLENGE,
followed by what might have been the best fight of the cycle. Pussycat definitely
looked to have been pelted with bricks when this one was finally over. Super big
congratulations to Brick and the Blues as they win the Challenge of the week!
HOMELESS PRINCE (22-6012) (23-5-1,100) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged IRIADOR
(50-2481) (17-7-2,100) of DRUID'S GROVE. HOMELESS PRINCE was vanquished by IRIADOR
in a 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. Even. I know, I said I wasn't going to comment
on these low level challenges any more, but with only nine to go on, I had to say
SOMETHING about it. This kid has been tearing it up out there since she arrived from
Snowbound. Do YOU have what it takes to stop her? It appears the Hopeless Prince
does NOT.
And for King's Sentinel:
GIMETHATSHIELD (26-1306) (43-31-1,219) of HEADBANGERS challenged MONICA
VIRTUESHIELD (11-3208) (98-53-0,321) of KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE. GIMETHATSHIELD was
viciously subdued by MONICA VIRTUESHIELD in a 5 minute fight. Up 102!
Gimethatshield must not have known that Monica was carrying those four LG as backups
just so he'd take them, get weighted down, and lose the fight. I guess he knows now.
All hail our King's Sentinel (and not for the first time), Monica Virtueshield.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
All -- I don't write PA's that often, but when I do, I hope it means something. When
did this arena and its managers become so weak? Is this not Andorak? SOV has been
down challenging people for months and months and nothing is being done about it. I
have been challenging him, but obviously he is avoiding me.
So with this being said, 1 of 3 things will happen:
1) You other managers step up instead of being stepped on. I don't think this
will happen, because I shouldn't have to write this to get others to act.
2) I will gather my warriors and move to another arena, making this depleted
arena even smaller.
3) I am leaning towards this choice. I will join SOV in the down challenging,
because there is obviously no backlash like there used to be in Andorak.
Either way, decide fast for I have little patience. -- Papaiz
Papaiz -- I thank you for your statements and ask you to continue to persecute
SOV for the downchallenges. Of course, he's been doing a great job of UPward
challenges here lately, but still...keep up the good fight! And don't leave! --
Khalli
Sands -- Hiiiyaaa!!!! That's right! It's called a karate chop! -- Vision, who
should have been an aimed blow after that performance!
Talisman Shieldguard -- Nice fight! You had me worried there. Good thing for me you
can't take as well as you can give out. -- Je Suis Bien
Warlock -- Well...let's see if you are avoiding now! -- Gimethatshield
P.S. Would it be too much for you to bring along a shield next time?
Joe Satriani -- Ahhh, just what I needed to boost up the ole confidence after a long
layoff. Thanks. -- Giggy (You know, like the song....get Giggy with it!)
Atrophy -- Well, your name says it all if you ask me. Thanks for the skills, by the
way. -- Homeless Prince
Khalli -- Merry Christmas in March. No downchallenges from the Headbangers this
turn. Watch us go 0-5 and give up on that upchallenging stuff for good! LOL! --
Sablon-O-Vlad
Sablon-O-Vlad -- Thanks for joining in the spirit of Andorak! You've done well
for yourself lately with those upward challenges. Keep it up and prove your
worth. -- Khalli
Hey Ed.! Check it out. We've figured out how that "plain text" thing works! Whoo
hoo!!!! -- SOV (What do you expect? It only took a year and one firm reminder.)
Thanks! You get a gold star for that! -- Ed.
Adie -- It all helps, it all helps. -- Sablon
Dis-Embowel -- Must you? -- B. Llud Pitt
P.S. Of course, on those days when one is afflicted with Montezuma's Revenge, that
is not such a terrible thought....
Deadpool -- So what is it, industrial pollutants in the water? -- Leeta
Wisteria -- (grudgingly) The flowers were pretty. -- Pussycat
Hummel -- Sappy children, even when only statues, make me nasty. Your tough luck. --
Schendirk
Sabon-O-Vlad -- Heck, Lirin Kiv has more personals, and with only twenty fights, too.
-- Leeta
All -- Where is everybody? I know I don't talk like I used to, but this is just
terrible! Let's have some action in these ads, Andorak! Can I get an Amen? --
Armalias
Soultaker -- Okay, bub, I'm running in your stupid Aradi thingy and giving you and
your teammate a lot of points, so let's hear some talking HERE where it's important.
-- Armalias
Sentinel -- Same to you, bub. -- Armalias
Sablon-O-Vlad -- Boy, you sure do down challenge and awful lot. Maybe I should start
retaliating...in fact, I guess I should, judging by the number of DCs you've sent my
way. Hmm. Well, I guess we're at war now. Good luck, Headbangers! -- Armalias
All -- Anyone out there want to take the time to write a spotlight? That would be a
novelty, wouldn't it? I remember back when this newsletter was huge...I wonder what
we can do to bring that back? -- Armalias Skyhawk, Bard of Alastari, Scarlet Knight
25 February 2004
Readers, and especially those who volunteered warriors -- My apologies for the sudden
lack of episodes. I've been sick, but expect to be back at the keyboard soon. -- the

MONGO'S MARDI GRAS MADNESS DUELMASTERS AUCTION
Mongo, aka Matt McIntosh and ex-Warden of the Dark Circle, is auctioning off his
entire collection of Duelmasters warriors and stables. Don't miss out on this chance
to own some fantastic warriors! There are ADM warriors available in every class from
Primus to Freshmen, as well as over a dozen Basic stables.
Does a Slasher with +4 attack, +4 decisiveness, +3 initiative and +2 riposte
sound good? How about a Lunger who received the benefit of a TC prize, has TVed
three times after graduating--and still hasn't maxed out his skills!? How about a
Striker in the Freshmen class who has decisiveness for a favorite learn and the MAUL
for a favorite weapon!?
Or perhaps you prefer playing in Basic. Then how does a stable with four Adept
class warriors who have a combined record of 41-19-9 sound? Or maybe a stable with
three 21-Will warriors? Or perhaps a stable with four Initiates and a Rookie who
have a combined record of 23-6-1?
The quality of the lots is excellent. All you need to view and bid on the lots
is go to:
http://members.aol.com/jvmerlino/mardigras.html
If you want to be on the mailing list to receive regular updates on the auction,
just send an e-mail to JVMerlino@aol.com. Merlin, aka John Merlino and also an ex-
Warden of the Dark Circle, will be running this auction for me. I just moved to New
Orleans and am likely currently stumbling around the French Quarter...because it's
Mardi Gras! So I have named my auction in honor of this occasion.
The auction will start on Saturday, March 13th, 2004, and will continue for
several weeks. But you should get your bids in early if you want your best chance at
owning any of these fantastic warriors and stables.
Many thanks to all for your interest and your bids,
Mongo

Style Masters Symposium
Hosted by Hammer
The years have slipped by and many DM Managers have come and gone since the last
Hammer's Handbook was compiled and printed.
There is now a stirring within me to begin writing and editing yet another
Handbook with a distribution date sometime in 2005.
This Handbook will be made available via Email with a possibility of burning the
info to a CD for distribution.
Special arrangements will be made to provide the information via printed page to
those contributors who are serving sentences behind bars.
The working title of this new Handbook is "Style Masters Symposium Hosted by
Hammer".
Distribution of this Handbook is projected to be MAINLY for those DM Managers
who contribute information/articles to Hammer by June 2004.

All 10 Style Masters for both the Basic and ADM arenas as well as Tourney
competition.
Articles focusing on Weapons/Armor are also encouraged for inclusion.
Whether you are a Newbie Manager without a clue or a Jaded Veteran; everyone has
discovered something about this gaming experience that is both Insightful and
Entertaining.

Flower Hammerz (372) in DM 28 or Casino Hammerz (576) in DM 33.

Determined by the Quality and Quantity of Contributors Combined with the Literary
Efforts of Hammer who is currently overseas for an indefinite period of time.
Articles Contributed for this Project should be of Sufficient Length and Content
to Warrant being Included to Receive the Finished Document when Hammer has completed
this literary work to His satisfaction.
Managers contributing articles are also requested to include a DM Bio of
Themselves along with any Notable Successes and/or Failures during Their DM Career in
