REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
Shatterstar pulled back on the reins, halting Starmantle just inside the gates
of the White Tower's courtyard. How many years had it been since he'd been here? It
seemed like an eternity to the elf. It wasn't the first time he'd been away for an
extended period, though the last time he'd been away for this long it had been ten
years to him, while only a matter of months here. That mission had led his group to
another world...another dimension. He gave Starmantle his head, the warhorse
recognizing home for what it was, and allowed the mount to make his own way to the
stables.
Chi'en and Jhadzia rode in on the General's heels, the guards to engrossed with
Shatterstar's return to even register that the two had come into the courtyard
unannounced. They slowed their horses to a walk and followed Starmantle's lead to
the stable where they dismounted and handed the reins to the waiting stable boys.
The two women watched Shatterstar closely as he remained astride his sleek mount, the
stud pawing at the ground in anticipation of the brushing he knew he'd be getting
soon; but the elf was too lost in thought to notice. His head turned from side to
side, making a visual circuit of the courtyard, taking in all the familiar sights,
sounds, smells of Andorak.
Shatterstar turned his gaze upon his companions, a genuine smile almost taking
in his ears. "It is good to be home," he said, sliding easily from the saddle to
join the two women. He put an arm around their shoulders and gave them both a
friendly squeeze.
"Let us see what awaits us," he said, drawing them along with him, walking
straight toward the door into the White Tower itself. Jhadzia smiled at Chi'en as
they fell into step behind him, and almost bumped into him as he came to a sudden
stop in front of her. She followed his gaze up to the third level of the tower, to
the window there that overlooked the courtyard.
To the sapphire colored eyes of the Governess of Andorak.

The wind howled mercilessly on the Great Glacier, biting at the man's skin
despite the heavy furs he wore against the cold. The Ice Palace, or what was left of
it, stood in disarray around him, its once perfect walls in shambles and its Guardian
and other defenders gone from the place.
Dead, he reminded himself.
He tried to summon the magic that would bring to his mind visions of what had
transpired. A simple enough task for a wizard of his power; but not here, where
magic would never be the same. With the destruction of the Eye of the North, magic
simply could not function here anymore. The only clue he had as to who had been here
and destroyed his creation was a sword that he had found beneath the body of a large
gargoyle, the monster he'd set in charge of the defenses here.
In runes the man could easily read, despite the lack of working magic, was
written on the blade: "Shimmermoon."

Greetings, fair patrons of the Crimson Eagle! Feast your eyes on the Spymaster
of Andorak and know that he is here to sate your curiosity. Who challenged and won;
or lost? Who was talking bad about another in the locker room? Was there really a
fight in the ladies room after the title match? The only way you'll ever know is to
read on....
Joe Satriani; you must have made a lot of enemies here when you tried passing
off all that noise as music...it seems everyone in Andorak wants to take your axe and
shove it...well, you know...down your throat. Warckers was running scared once
again, with Headbangers chasing them all over the arena. And here I thought SoV had
turned the corner on the bad guy gig. Stupidest challenge for the turn goes to
Talisman Shieldguard, for his challenge of the more experienced Monica Virtueshield.
What was he thinking?
Wisteria needed time off to recuperate after all the partying she did after
taking the position of King's Sentinel, so we have a new leader atop the board.
Anyone care to guess who?
The challenges:
WARPATH (66-2926) (60-106-4,212) of X-FORCE challenged PEPSI (68-8510) (60-30-
0,231) of OVERWORLD. WARPATH was viciously subdued by PEPSI in a crowd pleasing 1
minute Challenge fight. Up 19. Armalias is paying attention; for that I should be
thankful. Warpath, however, might have been happier if he hadn't...this challenge
was a little beyond the big man. Pepsi is fast becoming one of my favorite
gladiators to watch...what a great fight! Kudos!!!
BRUENOR BATTLEHAMMER (67-917) (81-75-3,216) of FORGOTTEN REALMS challenged
STELLA BLUE (53-6167) (34-20-1,240) of PUERCO'S PINATA. BRUENOR BATTLEHAMMER was
savagely defeated by STELLA BLUE in a 2 minute melee. Up 24! A great big Andorian
challenge from a dwarf of greater stature (for a dwarf), but to no avail, as Stella
Blue proves you don't have to have a beard and smell like a mule to win in Andorak.
Really; you don't.
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (51-52-0,202) of SCARLET KNIGHTS challenged
MONICA VIRTUESHIELD (11-3208) (120-56-0,279) of KNIGHTS OF VIRTUE. TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD was vanquished by MONICA VIRTUESHIELD in a 1 minute brawl. Up 77!
Here's that stupidity I was talking about. Though both warriors are from Aruak City,
they are certainly a different vintage, as Monica proved by handing Talisman yet
another loss. Best of luck, Miss Virtueshield, for I see more Shieldguard in your
future.
WARLOCK (66-2473) (73-116-2,201) of X-FORCE challenged KILIM ALTARAXE (53-6251)
(46-31-0,202) of TORSCHIAN TUFTS. WARLOCK was overpowered by KILIM ALTARAXE in a 2
minute one-sided Challenge fight. Up 1. Almost not worth mentioning, except Kilim
wanted me to say that some dwarfs can win, despite smelling like a mule. <ducks>
Okay, gotta go.... Hmm, of interest is that despite his paying attention this cycle,
Armalias might have been better off staying in the shadows...that's 0-4 for those who
are counting.
VISION (26-1573) (55-31-2,207) of HEADBANGERS challenged PUSSYCAT (14-3701)
(56-64-1,211) of THE DOGHOUSE. VISION won victory over PUSSYCAT in a crowd pleasing
2 minute brutal Challenge fight. Up 4. Vision impresses me with an upchallenge in
recognition and fights, and more so with a fantastic win. Way to go, SoV? I'm proud
of you for living the Andorian way....
GOKU (46-3655) (37-40-2,196) of DRAGONBALL Z challenged HEATHER (48-3062) (92-
171-7,200) of STARS. GOKU was bested by HEATHER in a popular 1 minute gruesome
Challenge competition. Up 4. Not much of a difference in recognition, but look at
those fights! 186 fight differential!!! That was obviously too much for Goku to
give up...but as everyone knows, defeat only makes a Saiyan grow stronger....
POSITIVE (26-3633) (103-79-0,205) of WARCKERS challenged JOE SATRIANI (11-4422)
(25-32-2,205) of THE HEADCUTTERS II. POSITIVE unbelievably bested JOE SATRIANI in a
action packed 3 minute Challenge duel. Even. Joe was most challenged, and Positive
showed you why. If a scum like that can beat you, Joe, what chance do you have when
everyone else catches up to you?
GUESS MY STYLE (40-3407) (30-15-0,162) of SUPERIOR FORCES challenged BEAVIS
(14-3996) (21-16-4,169) of THE DEATH SQUAD. GUESS MY STYLE luckily beat BEAVIS in a
action packed 5 minute gory Challenge duel. Up 7. Sounds like a scumming to me.
"Luckily beat" in "5 minutes"? Got to be. But hey; it was a win AND a UC, so who am
I to complain?
ZERO THE HERO (14-4129) (22-6-1,130) of THE DEATH SQUAD challenged HOMELESS
PRINCE (22-6012) (31-22-1,163) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. ZERO THE HERO was overpowered by
HOMELESS PRINCE in a 1 minute uneven Challenge match. Up 33! Another stupid, err, I
mean BIG challenge. Zero must have thought that the Homeless one would be an easy
target, but he sure found out differently in the end, with Prince pounding his face
in the dirt for three minutes after the fight was over.
LUCIFER (52-3031) (16-16-0,102) of INCARNATIONS challenged HUMMEL (14-1404)
(47-104-2,136) of MIKES. LUCIFER beat HUMMEL in a exciting 3 minute brutal Challenge
fight. Up 34!!! Why three exclamation points? Because Lucifer WON on a big
challenge, that's why! Drinks are on me for the victor of this one, and the victor
can buy Hummel one to prove he's a good sport.
ATROPHY (14-4034) (21-16-1,98) of THE DEATH SQUAD challenged PYROTECHNICIAN
(52-2847) (22-21-1,112) of THE FURIOUS FIVE. ATROPHY was devastated by
PYROTECHNICIAN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge conflict. Up 14. With a name like
Atrophy, is it any wonder he stood there and got mashed like a melon? Well, thanks
for the challenge...it's more than I expected.
And at last, for the top spot in Andorak; the battle for King's Sentinel:
DEADPOOL (66-2274) (83-81-7,318) of X-FORCE fought POETIC JUICE (66-2975) (28-
18-0,193) of ANDORIAN UNIVERSITY. Wow. What a HUGE difference in recognition...125
points?!? How can this happen in Andorak? Was there no one who wanted to fight the
priest of Ahringol? I'm quite sure that Poetic Juice didn't want this fight....
DEADPOOL demolished POETIC JUICE in a popular 1 minute bloody mismatched Title match.
I was right, you know...PJ had no idea what was happening from the time the
Arenamaster shouted for the warriors to begin. Deadpool, I'm proud of you. You do
Tarrgir proud with your victory and I'm SO looking forward to a column from you and
that laz...uhh, manager of yours.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
So...how do we get some fresh warriors in here? The rankings are so thin, except for
the top, so the younger ones get clobbered. We need to get more managers to run
here. Any ideas, people? -- Adie
Sentinel -- None of my warriors are currently on maintenance actually. They haven't
been for probably at least a year and a half. I'm starting to think my recent streak
of more losses than wins is due to the underdeveloped nature of my warriors and the
thin ranks of the arena. After all, I can't be lazy if I'm actually sending in turn
sheets and trying to find good challenges (which is tough here). So nyah! :P -- Adie
Pyro -- Usually I'm first off the line, no question. There were a few questions at
the beginning of our duel. -- Clovia
Stella -- Hmm...I do know how to use a spear, and other lunging weapons. Maybe it's
worth a shot some time. -- Richard
P.S. Of course not. Win or lose, it was not a fun fight. I'd prefer a long close
battle and then lose.
Schendirk -- We all know Khalhums was one of the greatest arenas ever. Adie started
our team right after it shriveled away. But I earned my keep there fer sure. An'
I'm gettin' warmed up! So look out, laddie! -- Kilim
Armalias -- Speak up? Some of us here have the opportunity to retort with a "Look
who's talking" comment, ahem Leeta, Puerco and I. You've been pretty quiet yourself
except for a turn or two recently. I'll be more than happy to speak up knowing I
will be hearing more from you these days. :) -- Adie
SOV and DK -- You've been quiet. Busy? -- Adie
Pussycat -- Actually, that bodypaint gimmick got old YEARS ago, like back in
Khalhums. Alas, the name remains. -- Stella Blue
Schendirk -- Great fight, but you may be in need of an adjustment in your training.
Or, perhaps not. -- Stella
Stella Blue -- Long a favorite color of mine, that lovely blue. When I look at you,
I'm stunned by your...oh, was it your blow to my head? Uh, that wasn't what I was
going to say. At least, I don't think that's what I was going to say. -- Schendirk
Storm Lxv -- Listen, short-and-hairy, I don't LIKE dwarves, see? They smell funny.
And they don't UNDERSTAND cats. -- Pussycat
Oh, well, that's just GREAT, I lose to a STANDBY? Cheese. -- Minor Miner
George Bush -- I knew a Bush once. She was a mock orange. Very pretty flowers. Any
kin? -- Skelos
The Toad -- I heard that you guys all have jewels in your heads. They actually admit
it down in Dal Shang. But you look like you might be a different kind of toad, so I
can't be sure about you. What's the scoop? -- Daisy January

My fellow duelists I come before you bearing a sad and unfortunate message.
Several months ago our group, the Vendetta Cartel, had lost contact with one of our
friends. Since he was in contact or correspondence on an almost daily basis there
was concern amongst us. With some research two of our members discovered why contact
was lost with him.
On November 10, 2004, Richard Hammes was taken from us in a senseless act of
violence during a robbery attempt at a friend's store where he sometimes worked. He
was watching the store so his friend could go home to tend to his son who had taken
ill. You may have known Rich as Abarsis, The Slaughter Priest ; richh10 on the RT;
or gameogre on the Duel2 messageboard. You may not have known that he spent 13 years
serving the United States in the Navy.
Rich dearly loved this game and all it encompassed. He may not have been the
best or most experienced manager but he loved to interact with others and was quick
to offer advice whenever anyone asked for help. He was always kind and gracious and
tried to strengthen our game, often by helping new players feel welcome or give them
a chance to compete. With his prolific posting I know that I am simply speaking the
obvious about what he did for our game. Many, like me, were drawn to him, perhaps
for his kind nature or his sense of humor, and it appears he lived his life as he
played this game. Always willing to help or do right by others.
I realize that he had many friends outside the VC so I will include the link to
the news story in case any of his other friends would like to know more of what
happened. We're all dealt a hand in life but it's not the strength of the hand
you're dealt but rather how you play it that really matters. Rich played his hand to
the very best of his human ability and for this I admire him greatly. I know we all
choose to like or dislike managers but I believe deep down we are all good and
decent, in this game, and will drop party (alliance) lines and will show the proper
respect.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20041112/news_7m12clerk.html
Rich was taken from us all to soon and with so much left to offer the community
around him. He spoke of a desire to run a contest on the Duel2 site which I hope to
uphold in his name. Some of the people I have spoken with think it would be a nice
gesture to do one final good act in Rich's name, though it could never match what he
would've done within his community, for his community of San Diego. I hope that with
this contest we might raise a little money to donate to an appropriate charity within
San Diego in his name.
In conclusion I send a message to Rich:
"Rich, though I'm sure you gathered this I never really told you how much I
admired you and what a friend I considered you. I thank you for being my voice of
reason and always reminding me of why we both loved this game so much! You have
taught me one final valuable lesson in learning more of you. There are things far
more valuable in life than material possessions such as character and kindness. That
nothing going on in your life means that you cannot find a way to be kind and giving
to others. We always spoke of meeting someday and until we finally do know that you
will live on in with me and the rest of your brothers and sisters in the Cartel:
Master Darque, Kat, Bum, Sensei Jan, Maximillian, Hammer, Fizban, Firehawk, Phat
Phat. You increased all of our enjoyment of this game, you were a true ambassador of
Duelmasters, and the game will not be quite the same without you. A farewell battle
cry from the ZalCon: 'Confusion to our enemies'. May your soul rest in peace, my
friend."
Should anyone wish to correspond about Rich feel free to contact myself, or
anyone else within the Vendetta Cartel.

Be it known throughout Alastari that Hammer is no longer a member of the
Vendetta Cartel alliance.
A difference of opinion with another highly respected member of the VC due to my
recent vocal actions in DM 47 can only be resolved by my resignation from the VC as
of January 29, 2005.
I leave of my own accord, in good standing with all members and with no hard
feelings towards anyone in the Vendetta Cartel.
There was a time when I felt that my membership in the VC made the alliance
stronger. I know that my resignation today makes the Vendetta Cartel a stronger
alliance with my absence. -- Hammer

On behalf of the ILLUMINATI Confederation of Alliances (The kLk, CHAOS, Inc. and The
Company of Brothers) I would like to express our sympathies concerning the tragic
loss of Rich Hammes to both the DM community and to the real life world. Surely our
loss has been Heaven's gain. -- Talon Darkhart, deeply sorrowful
