Outside Kati-Tei:

"Separated in the darkness?" Flutterlee shuddered. "Definitely not." She
staked so close behind Jehu that she was practically treading on his heels. When he
stopped suddenly, she crashed into his back and yelped.
"Quiet!" Though firm, the word was barely a whisper.
Flutterlee peered around his right side and saw nothing, shifted a little and
peered to the left. Something. But what? Movement of some kind, but vague, almost
hidden by the darkness. It almost looked like... no, she couldn't tell. Only that
it was something moving among the tombstones and the curtains of rain. She took a
careful breath and tried to tell herself that she did not believe in ghost. Herself
didn't believe it. Of course she believed in ghosts. But that was NOT a ghost.
Almost certainly not. Well, probably not.
Besides, what would a ghost be doing moving around out there? They should be...
well, in their graves, shouldn't they? Or their tombs, as the case might be. Maybe
it was a grave robber. Um, another grave robber.
It occurred to her that Jehu wasn't looking in that direction. She turned head,
afraid to take her eyes off the thing she half-saw, but also afraid not to know what
her companion was looking at.
Nothing she could see. Why wasn't he paying attention to the ghost, which was
right THERE and probably closer than whatever Jehu wasn't seeing, anyway? In fact,
she choked back a sob of fright, the ghost was coming closer. Lots closer.
Definitely a ghost. It looked like a bit of drifting mist, except for being more or
less human-shaped. Flutterlee stared, hardly daring to breathe. It had nothing
resembling legs, maybe it was a female ghost and that was a skirt. Or not. But it
moved with a smooth glide that was quite inhuman and even un-elven. Not even a cat--
Arms of mist reached out to her. She choked on another sob of fright and
reached out for Jehu. A sarcastic remark from him would be welcome right now.
Jehu wasn't there. At some time while she'd been watching the ghost, he had
moved on, and she hadn't noticed. And he hadn't noticed that she wasn't behind him.
And the ghost was RIGHT HERE.
There was only one thing a conventional young woman could do in this situation,
and Flutterlee did it. She fainted.

"I don't know where she is," Jehu repeated. "She was right behind me, just
about walking on my heels. I stopped to look at... I don't know what it was, maybe a
dog, if a dog would be dumb enough to run around a graveyard on a night like this.
When I started again, I thought she was behind me, but she didn't say anything.
Well, I'd told her to be quiet. But--"
"But we can't go any farther without her," Lurline Grace said. She gestured
into the body of the tomb behind her. The light of a single candle showed a bare
stone room, long and narrow and fading into darkness at the far end. Along either
side were shelves that held coffins. "There's a door back there that I think we have
to open. Flutterlee is the one who is kin here, and we're probably going to need her
to open it."
After looking into the tomb, as requested, Jehu had turned again to stare out
over the graveyard. "Flutterlee knew that. She wouldn't have turned back at the
last minute--"
Lurline snorted. "Jehu, she was terrified of the whole situation. Of course
she'd have turned back, if there was the least shadow of a reason for it."
"You're too hard on her," Jehu said, his tone mild. "Incompatible
personalities." His tone hardened. "Something happened to her. Maybe something as
simple as a fall, hitting her head and knocking herself out. We'll have to go look
for her."
Lurline sighed. "I was afraid of that. Now that the tomb is open this far, I
don't feel good about leaving it unattended, but I don't feel good about either you
or F'lee being out there alone, either."
     "Needs must," Jehu said.
"You think the devil might be driving? Gods, I hope not!"

                          Reflections by the King's Sentinel

Dearest Andorak,
You really know how to make a guy feel special. Here I emerge from what was
practically turning into retirement, and step immediately into the arena's top spot.
Good thing for me I will be staying around a while--until the split, anyway. After
that I will be making the cross-Isle commute to Primus, to learn a few things that I
didn't even realize I didn't know! Until that happens, I will strive to be the best
King's Sentinel possible (which means two things, really: 1) keep winning, and 2)
write something here every turn). I hope I get the change to do both.
                                   Axly Himself

                             REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER

Somebody observed Columbus, whoever he is, headed our way, and declared a
holiday. Thus, the fights are late. But through heroic efforts on my part, not TOO
late, and with haste and no frills, we should get them done quickly here.

Most Avoided: Superior Forces 3J. Most Avoiding, Kellumbo's Kids.
     Most Challenged: Vajra Valmejar.
Twenty-four fights, involving six standbys. It could be worse. Five
challenges, none of them TV. No deaths.

MARS (41-3989) (31-17-0,87) of WANDERERS fought NAFISAH (22-6612) (19-7-0,80) of
KELLUMBO'S KIDS. MARS was overpowered by NAFISAH in a 1 minute uneven fight. This
Nafisah is cutting a broad sweep through the ranks. The bookies are watching him
closely.
BABY (43-2863) (24-30-2,62) of DARK SIDE fought OHRLAM (105-2) (0-0-0,60) of
Creepy, Lazy Monsters. BABY was luckily beaten by OHRLAM in a 2 minute duel. Was it
luck, or was it tentacles? Inquiring minds aren't sure they want to know.
TORNADO CXCVI (60-5111) (14-21-0,58) of DEATH STUDS VII fought PARNIAN (41-4138)
(27-39-1,72) of WANDERERS. TORNADO CXCVI was overpowered by PARNIAN in a 1 minute
one-sided match. Somehow, I hadn't expected Parnian to win. And neither had the
bookies, wherefore he'd better stay out of alleys for a while.
     HERO, HERO (68-446) (11-36-0,45) of DIAMONDS & RUST fought SHINORR (105-1) (0-0-
0,60) of Creepy, Lazy Monsters. HERO, HERO lost to SHINORR in a crowd pleasing 1
minute fray. Ah, but Monsters eat Heroes for breakfast, everybody knows that! It's
in the Monster Code.

OOZING ORIFICES (71-3475) (8-3-0,27) of POSITIVELY PUTRID fought SATURN (41-
3990) (19-74-0,85) of WANDERERS. OOZING ORIFICES viciously subdued SATURN in a
popular 2 minute gruesome match. I could almost feel sorry for Saturn: if it isn't
tentacles, it's gross and disgusting fluids.
SOLARIS (46-3759) (28-73-0,105) of RUBY DRAGONS fought TARIN SHARPEYES (105-3)
(0-0-0,100) of Creepy, Lazy Monsters. SOLARIS was viciously subdued by TARIN
SHARPEYES in a popular 5 minute gory contest. Hmm, hasn't it been a while since
Sharpeyes fought here? My memory could be wrong, of course. But if he's been gone,
he hasn't been loafing.
KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (49-47-1,117) of RUBY DRAGONS fought TARIN
SHARPEYES (105-3) (0-0-0,100) of Creepy, Lazy Monsters. KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN
overpowered TARIN SHARPEYES in a 1 minute mismatched fight. Okay, maybe he has been
loafing. Although with two fights in one day, some people would allow him to lose
the second without making snide remarks. I'll think about it.
WARDUKE (11-5930) (49-56-3,180) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought FLUTTERLEE (41-
4153) (23-37-0,108) of WANDERERS. WARDUKE was demolished by FLUTTERLEE in a 1 minute
one-sided bout. This totally boggles the imagination, and one can only assume that
Warduke showed up blind drunk.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (45-41-1,179) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought SEXTANT (63-
2415) (15-7-1,127) of SAILS OF CHARON. VAN HELSING bested SEXTANT in an exciting 1
minute fight. All well and good, Van, but what happens when you're lost and want to
shoot the sun? You think Sextant will cooperate?

     WOLVERINE (66-3871) (57-108-4,186) of X-FORCE fought MEYK (105-24) (0-0-0,250)
of Creepy, Lazy Monsters. WOLVERINE was handily defeated by MEYK in a crowd pleasing
1 minute mismatched bout. Handily, no less! Even with the ranking difference, you'd
think Wolverine could have held out for more than a minute. Well, maybe he was blind
drunk along with Warduke. I hear it was an amazing party.
     WARPATH (66-2926) (91-143-4,196) of X-FORCE fought BERYL (105-26) (0-0-0,181) of
Creepy, Lazy Monsters. WARPATH defeated BERYL in an action packed 1 minute struggle.
This is possibly impressive, or possibly not, and I can't find the data to tell me
which. So, on the theory that it's better to say something pleasant when one can, I
will be impressed here.
STORM LXV (60-4972) (34-17-0,198) of DEATH STUDS VII fought BLACKRAZOR (11-4091)
(62-123-1,192) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. STORM LXV overpowered BLACKRAZOR in a popular 3
minute gruesome mismatched conflict. I've been worried about that razor. I wonder
whether it might have been stropped too many times? Even the best blade might break.
     IRIADOR (50-2481) (69-48-2,189) of DRUID'S GROVE fought MAXIMUS (22-5966) (61-
41-3,196) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. IRIADOR viciously subdued MAXIMUS in an exciting 2
minute bloody battle. So bloody, in fact, that the janitors had to haul out two
cartloads of sand and replace it with fresh. I sometimes wonder what happens to that
bloody sand, but I don't... think... I'm going to ask. No, I don't think so.
LUCIAS CLAY (22-6359) (43-33-0,191) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought CONNOR MACLEOD
(11-5532) (56-67-0,172) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. LUCIAS CLAY demolished CONNOR MACLEOD
in a 1 minute mismatched competition. Thus demonstrating the advantage of paying
attention.

LEADFOOT (40-3516) (26-16-0,188) of TACO GODS fought SMITH (14-1282) (80-141-
4,169) of MIKES. LEADFOOT was handily defeated by SMITH in an exciting 1 minute one-
sided bout. What is it with this Taco? He came to us with such a good reputation,
and he's being kicked all over the place.
SANDS (11-4123) (62-121-3,188) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought WHERE'S MY TOURNEY?
(82-2893) (22-2-0,195) of THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! SANDS was defeated by WHERE'S MY
TOURNEY? in an exciting 2 minute fight. Many gladiators, and even managers, go down
before this one.
DEATH FOG (45-4017) (49-24-0,213) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD
(11-4304) (77-94-0,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DEATH FOG vanquished TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD in an action packed 1 minute uneven fight. Did I catch a whiff of
burning rubber in that fog? A bit of oh day mudflats?
POETIC JUICE (66-2975) (61-43-0,211) of ANDORIAN UNIVERSITY fought LUKARIAN
LAMORAK (11-4841) (60-78-1,186) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. POETIC JUICE won victory over
LUKARIAN LAMORAK in an action packed 3 minute duel. A kung-fu master in the audience
(they're all aesthetes) told me that the pattern of blood on the sands was
"poetically balanced." Oh yes?
NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (62-61-1,213) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought HOMELESS
PRINCE (22-6012) (74-47-1,212) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS. NIXIE SEASPRITE overpowered
HOMELESS PRINCE in a popular 1 minute mismatched brawl. This feels vaguely familiar,
but then, with our small roster, almost any match might feel familiar. Rumor has it
that the Prince is suffering from rheumatism due to sleeping in an alley in this
chilly weather.

     And the challenge matches:
SOLAR SISTER (71-5609) (42-15-1,196) of THE FURIOUS FIVE challenged LURLINE
GRACE (41-4164) (29-22-0,213) of WANDERERS. Up 17. SOLAR SISTER bested LURLINE
GRACE in a popular 3 minute bloody Challenge duel. What omens might one find in
this? Inquiring minds will probably find out next week.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (36-17-3,197) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (59-74-0,205) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 8. GRANDPA RAT overpowered VAJRA
VALMEJAR in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge match. Most challenged Vajra did not
"luck out" with the Rat. And if you think Grandpa is tough, you should meet his
wife!
     VISION (26-1573) (106-48-4,196) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged GOKU (46-3655)
(78-67-2,191) of DRAGONBALL Z. Down 5. VISION slimly won victory over GOKU in a
crowd pleasing 5 minute gory Challenge brawl. You should be doing better than that,
Vision! Although, with the Split lurking just around the corner, I suppose you might
not want to.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (41-13-0,214) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged STELLA BLUE
(53-6167) (40-24-1,208) of PUERCO'S PINATA. Down 6. BLIND GIRL was vanquished by
STELLA BLUE in a 3 minute uneven Challenge battle. Tricky. They say Blind Girl can
hear you breathe and locate you that way; do you suppose Stella was holding her
breath (in her off-hand, one presumes)?

And in defense of the title, our verbally active (thank you, Axly!) King's
Sentinel, AXLY HIMSELF (11-2363) (93-72-1,254) of GERFEL'S FRIENDS challenged HUMMEL
(14-1404) (83-136-4,340) of MIKES. Up something like 86 or so. AXLY HIMSELF bested
HUMMEL in a crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge Title fight. We're glad you won this,
Axly, and we give you a salute and a token good for one free drink at the Wolf's Head
Tavern.

                               PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE

Leadfoot -- Silly boy! You forgot the salsa. But that's dwarves for you, they just
don't understand that a GOOD taco is drenched with hot salsa. And sharp cheese, too,
of course, but the salsa is essential. -- Lurline Grace
P.S. Or, I could say, "You'll have to move faster than that to defeat me." After
which, you'll re-challenge, moving faster, and win. (sigh) It's a hard life.

Sextant -- Wow, talk about your bad omens! That probably means something DIRE will
happen to me in this month's spotlette. Try not to do it again, as I hate it when
dire things happen to me. I like life to be calm, orderly, and predictable. --
Flutterlee
P.S. Yes, I know, my death on the sands makes a dire even predictable, but I don't
have to LIKE it.

Solaris -- Well, damn. I took my canopener into the shop for repairs and didn't pick
it up in time for the fight today. Which means I deserved what I got. Not that I
feel deserving at the moment. Damn. This kind of thing makes me feel really dumb.
-- Mars

P.S. I wish this was like a mail-in tourney and we could specify different
strategies for aggressive and defensive opponents even in the absence of a challenge.
Oh, well. At least I'm stumbling around a lonely graveyard on a rainy night!

Baby -- (rearing up to his full height in perception of an insult) I do not fight
INFANTS. -- Saturn
P.S. However, consider this a lesson in losing, something in which I have great
experience.

Nafisah -- Welcome to the Isle, young lady. I, ah, stayed here instead of going to
Kati-Tei with some of my teammates especially to greet you. -- Parnian
P.S. Okay, maybe I didn't, but I can at least be gallant and lie, can't I?

Ardane -- I am NOT going retrograde, that's an artifact of observation rather than a
reality. I'm just going to have a major dust storm. -- Mars

Ok, ok, you can stop not-talking about TOGS VI already, it is coming, slowly but
surely, like a giant, over-fed, greased slug sliding down a gravely driveway. We're
looking for new-comers, old-timers, in-betweeners, fence-sitters and Delarquans to
come on out and participate. Just think, you could be the next Pinky & the Brain
pairing (a la Creepster & Manager), or maybe you'll be the team that crushes all in
its path on the way TO UTTER AND COMPLETE TOGS DOMINATION!!!!!! [note: insert
sinister cackle if it helps you complete the picture]

There will be a few minor changes, so let's recap the rules from top to bottom:

1. Each TOGS team consists of two managers. After the contest starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your teammate wisely. TOGS VI will last
for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so.

2. The TOGS entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per TOGS
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no exceptions
being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or manager decides
to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
     a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:
          Paul Jokelson
          115 Moss Ave. #201
          Oakland, CA 94611
     b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards
and no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.

3. TOGS point system:

Fights:

10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on another TOGS warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random match-up against another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another TOGS warrior.
 4 points for winning a random match-up against a non-TOGS warrior.

Changes this TOGS:

** 10 points for any challenge by the DM, UP OR DOWN!!
** 4 points for winning a random match-up against your TOGS partner's warrior.
To state the obvious, there are 0 points if you challenge your partner.

** 4 points for winning a bloodfeud attempt against you by a non-TOGS warrior

You will not get any points if you challenge or get challenged by a non-TOGS team
(with the exception of the above-stated rule if you get bloodfeuded), so use your
avoids wisely if you think someone is out to get you.

Spots/Ads

5 points for every spotlight written by any team member. 1 per manager per turn.

The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the newsletter
(that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and we will be completely firm on
this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will not be given points if
they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not Duelmasters or fantasy related.
We will be the sole judge of this. If you're unsure if we will judge something to be
Duelmasters or fantasy related, then e-mail me before you write the spotlight and
ask. We reserve the right to take points away from a spotlight after they are given
if we judge at later time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.

-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.

4. TOGS VI will start in arena 60 shortly after the Winter Face-to-Face (turn due
Feb 21, Aradi turn 436) and as mentioned before will last for 13 turns. There will
be multipliers in the later rounds, which means that all points accumulated by a team
on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by each team
on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.

5. Soultaker and Nuln will be the sole arbiters of any dispute that may arise, with
props to Sentinel for doing the score-keeping as always. Whine all you like, we will
be glad to provide comfortable chairs and the cheese of your choice.

And there be the rules. If you look closely, you'll notice there were a few minor
changes and additions made from the TOGS V rules. They are as follows:

-- The Snotman & Nuln rule: Last TOGS Snotman and Nuln randomly matched up something
like 4-5 times, so we basically decided out of pity to now give a small amount of
points (4 in this case) for winning a random against a teammate, so that you're not
completely screwed by having 2 of your 10 warriors get 0 zero points automatically.

-- Scaling Down Points for the DM: Previously a TOGS DM would get 10 points *in
addition* to whatever challenge points they got. This was to keep the DM from being
penalized for being at the top and give people something to fight for. However, it
was a bit too much of an award and we decided to scale it back and eliminate the
bonus, but give full upchallenge credit whenever the DM challenges.

-- Bloodfeuds from outside TOGS teams: This incident came up last TOGS, and it was
felt that if a person killed a non-TOGS warrior in a random, they shouldn't have to
be potentially locked into 4 turns of getting 0 points. So we've added an additional
rule which now gives 4 points if you win when bloodfeuded by a non-TOGS warrior, at
least giving you some way to get points if you're locked into a non-TOGS bloodfeud
instead of being basically removed from the contest for 4 turns.

And lastly...

-- Team Names: This was not listed in the rules, but to make things more festive, at
the suggestion of Manager we have decided to have the added dimension of team names!
Yes, no more boring rankings with Team 4 edging out Team 7. Just picture reading a
TOGS turn report now, with something along the lines of "Team Fiery Starfish
obliterated Team Superior TOGSlings," just as one example.

We hope to see you all there....
