On the shores of a lake:
Senator Sedalia stared at the magicians with consternation and displeasure.
The magicians stared back, in much the same mood. The one who seemed to be in
charge repeated his statement of position. "We came here to summon lesser daemons to
deal with certain problems in Istoreth," he said. "You appeared in response to that
spell. Therefore you are the summoned daemons and must do our bidding."
"And what if we can't deal with your problems?" Sedalia asked. There might be
some value in passing through Istoreth--a city on the Skaithvarn Peninsula, as he
recalled--in the character of magical spirits. And some risks.
The chief magician scowled. "Then you are the wrong daemons and must be
dismissed out of hand." His scowl deepened, and he tapped his wand on the palm of
his other hand. "A task which I am prepared to undertake without delay, it that
should prove... necessary."
"Or any of us!" another mage added.
"Summoned daemons should not be so quarrelsome," a third said. His fingers were
twitching. Since he was the one standing by the altar holding the knife (the victim
appeared to have been a rabbit), this was not encouraging.
Sedalia was quiet for a moment, reviewing what facts he had, then nodded
sharply. "It appears to me that you and we have been the victims of a daemonic
prank. Just as you cast your spell, your net, as it were, into the immaterial world,
my comrade and I were attempting to escape the magical bounds of the Isle of the Eye.
And some mischievous daemon, seeing a way to escape the spell himself, guided us into
it in his place." The senator shrugged. "You have, in a way, done us a favor. So
we will, so far as we can, return that favor by attempting whatever it was you wanted
the daemon to do."
The mages all stared at him fixedly for several moments, then turned to their
leader, consulting with glances.
Behind him, Gissanniah pinched his arm. "You don't know what they might want,"
she said, keeping her voice low. "We aren't demons--"
"Freely granted," Sedalia said, "though some might argue that politicians do fall
into that category. But they weren't fishing for demons. 'Lesser daemons', minor
spirits of some kind. And we are ingenious and capable. We may be able to handle
whatever is afoot."
"The spell specified that certain abilities believed necessary would be present,
and you could not have been substituted if you did not have them," the chief mage
said. "Therefore, we will allow you the attempt." He gestured toward a grove of
trees farther along the shore, where a carriage could be glimpsed. "Let us be away
to Istoreth and put it to the test."

Between Tarrgir and Andor:
"I don't believe this!" Fandil said. "After all these years of harmony, they're
just turning on their neighbors--"
Lenpro held up a hand to stop his companion. "Fandil, we could debate and
analyze till the cows grow wings, but it wouldn't do a bit of good. Just a post
mortem: How did the old Andorian League die? What we need is to act. Keep it
alive, make it stronger, a *new* Andorian League. Start thinking about that."
The old mage opened his mouth, then closed it again and frowned. Finally he
ndded. "You're right. Okay. Everything we've been able to find out indicates that
the king is dead or vanished, no one knows exactly how, but gone for good."
"Right. Somebody can investigate that later, if somebody wants to, but that's
done." Lenpro glanced over his shoulder at Tarrgir, fading into the distance behind
them. "Even if the king was found and returned to Andor, I don't think he'd be able
to rule effectively now."
"But somebody has to," Fandil said, nodding. "Not just to oversee the details
of government--although somebody should keep all those bureaucrats under close watch!
But--"
Lenpro laughed. "I suppose 'all those bureaucrats' are watching each other very
closely right now, making sure nobody gets more than their share of the power."
"Maybe so, but all they can do is keep it grinding along in the same old way,
and slowing down and dying in its tracks, if we could see a long view. No. We need
a visible head of the government, a king or whatever, to form the pole around which
the new Andorian League will crystalize."
"Right," Lenpro said again. "And it should be someone whose claim to that role
is beyond dispute. Andoria doesn't have *time* for internal disputes right now, not
with hostile and greedy neighbors. So it has to be Emperor Alonj of Fratsfa."
Fandil was silent for several minutes while their mounts negotiated a badly
graded slope and a weedy ford. Then he sighed. "I see your logic. The baron of
Ardivent is an elf, the head of the Aruaki Clanholds is an Aruaki. Neither would be
acceptable at this time to the rest of the Andorian population, even if they wanted
to take on the job. The High Thane of Convincia... isn't really up for the job, and
he's old. With the defection of Aradi, a Raltuman wouldn't be trusted. So that only
leaves a Fratsfan, and their ruler is human, the right age, and legitimate. But
there is a persistent rumor that he's a half-wit, you know. Even if it isn't true,
that will undermine the confidence of--"
"Lady Fern says he's capable enough," Lenpro said. "But that's a secondary
factor. He's the right man to serve as a figurehead for a new Andoria, so he's
hereby elected."
"Whether he wants the job or not?"
"Whether or not," Lenpro said. He reined his horse to the right at a fork.
"Which is why we're going to Fratsfa instead of Andor."
Andor:
Crystal Fireblade flicked a glance at the golem of the king, considering it and
dismissing it. "It won't buy us much time," she said. "You can make it look like a
king, but you can't make it act like one."
"There is a rumor," Herlas said, "a whisper of a rumor among the clerks at the
palace, that the golem is intended to announce its abdication in favor of some other
person. Maybe not today, but soon--we aren't the only ones who know this won't work
for long."
"Who?"
"Ah... probably Lord Korneth of Sengir."
"I have never heard of this Korneth, or of Sengir," the knight said. "What do
you know of him?"
"Little more than you do. He is as ambitious as any man I've ever seen.
Ruthless. As to his background, nothing. People who asked questions when he first
appeared... disappeared."

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
The good news is, we had more fights here than Home Guard did, and this despite a
light rainfall. The bad news is, that doesn't take much. Ah, well, gladiation on
the Isle is as it is, and not a whit different. Even Olaf Modeen accepts that, even
Debby Tonte does!
That Totally Sucks! was the most avoided team, and I'm sure nobody wonders at that.
I'd avoid them, too. Kellumbo's Kids, the most actively managed team here, did the
avoiding.
Smith got the most challenges. Given that *all* the challenges were issued by
Kellumbo's Kids, this probably means a double-challenge. I could be wrong, but it
isn't like anybody's going to write in and tell me so.
We had twenty fights (Home Guard just had nine!) with three standbys working. Seven
challenges, one of them a tv challenge. This isn't a bad percentage.
The fights:
GOLDERIE (26-4657) (25-29-1,68) of GOLDEN CANYON fought SHINORR (105-1) (0-0-
0,60) of Bored Fans. GOLDERIE beat SHINORR in a crowd pleasing 1 minute fight.
Well, if she'd cook for the aforementioned fans, maybe they wouldn't be bored. Talk
about riding a huff! Just because some of these guys had a few matchups with
grossly-named opponents, they're going to let us all starve. And besides, "grossly
named" is in the ear of the beholder anyway. Behearer? Whatever.
GO-FER (26-4444) (19-39-2,49) of GOLDEN CANYON fought FRY GUY (40-3655) (23-11-
0,74) of TACO GODS. GO-FER was demolished by FRY GUY in a 1 minute one-sided bout.
I've heard that many people who meet this Go-Fer consider that boiling oil is too
good for him. But it's a place to start.
CONNOR MACLEOD (11-5532) (64-81-0,100) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought BABY (43-
2863) (26-37-2,43) of DARK SIDE. CONNOR MACLEOD devastated BABY in a 1 minute one-
sided fight. Mis-Matches R Us. Also known as, Small Arena Syndrome Strikes Again.
SARINA (26-4220) (25-34-1,100) of GOLDEN CANYON fought LAWRENCE THE SOT (105-10)
(0-0-0,150) of Bored Fans. SARINA bested LAWRENCE THE SOT in a 2 minute brawl. Does
this mean we get Beer-B-Que next time? I could wrap myself around some of that.
WOLVERINE (66-3871) (66-121-5,179) of X-FORCE fought BERYL (105-26) (0-0-0,181)
of Bored Fans. WOLVERINE won victory over BERYL in an exciting 1 minute fray. It
wasn't really exciting, you know. Neither opponent was paying attention.
VAN HELSING (11-6338) (51-57-1,178) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought HERO, HERO (68-
446) (19-37-0,131) of DIAMONDS & RUST. VAN HELSING lost to HERO, HERO in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute bout. Beaten over the head by a rusty sandwich! The shame, the
ignominy! Hey, I have to say something, it's my job.
NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (66-79-1,200) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought HUMMEL (14-
1404) (93-148-6,205) of MIKES. NIXIE SEASPRITE narrowly defeated HUMMEL in a crowd
pleasing 4 minute gory conflict. I always thought Nixie was a narrow woman. And her
eyes are too close together. Or maybe her nose is too skinny.
BLACKRAZOR (11-4091) (66-141-1,206) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought CLEMMIE (26-4630)
(28-37-1,156) of GOLDEN CANYON. BLACKRAZOR murdered CLEMMIE in a 1 minute mismatched
match. See if she ever cooks for you! Something tells me that Clemmie isn't one to
toss a grudge out with last week's trash.
DEATH FOG (45-4017) (65-30-0,191) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought WARDUKE (11-5930)
(57-70-3,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. DEATH FOG devastated WARDUKE in a 1 minute
mismatched conflict. Is there a hint of chemical warfare here? Inquiring minds want
to get out of range before it's too late.
FINALITY (82-4063) (33-18-1,215) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3P fought GOKU (46-3655)
(92-75-2,210) of DRAGONBALL Z. FINALITY was savagely defeated by GOKU in an exciting
1 minute brutal fight. A curious outcome for a gladiator named "Finality." Is this
his/her/its final fight? Is a fate finally sealed? Or should that name have two
enns and indicate an affinity for the possession of fins?
TITANIA (65-5835) (39-26-0,213) of SUPERIOR FORCES 3J fought TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD (11-4304) (81-112-0,191) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. TITANIA overpowered
TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD in a 1 minute uneven match. Is there any truth to the rumor
that Titania was carrying an unobtainium shield or sword? Either would be
devastating, of course, but these things are more heard of than seen.
SNAKE CHARMER (22-6169) (47-23-0,212) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS fought SANDS (11-4123)
(67-138-3,195) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. SNAKE CHARMER unbelievably bested SANDS in a 2
minute gory duel. Aha! The truth comes out! Sands is a snake and easily charmed by
a tweedly flute and someone unsteady on their feet.
GOLDWRAP (82-11886) (37-11-0,256) of SUPERIOR FORCES 34 fought VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (69-86-0,201) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. GOLDWRAP vanquished VAJRA VALMEJAR in a
popular 1 minute uneven duel. I had a goldwrap sandwich the other day. It was...
interesting. The wrap in question was made of some kind of seaweed, ground corn, and
safflower, and it had a sort of musty taste. I don't think I'll be asking for
another.
The challenges:
DARNESHA (82-42015) (13-4-1,62) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 challenged LORIS KEY
(26-4706) (20-29-1,56) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 6. DARNESHA overpowered LORIS KEY in
a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. No pie for you, Darnesha, and you'll have to eat
it with chopsticks anyway. Talk about a challenge!
TEEVELLA (82-24954) (20-4-1,170) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged TORNADO CXCVI
(60-5111) (18-27-0,149) of DEATH STUDS VII. Down 21. TEEVELLA overpowered TORNADO
CXCVI in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge brawl. I hear that Teevella has gotten a
lot of job offers from Kansas.
NAFISAH (22-6612) (32-16-1,161) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN
(46-3809) (56-62-1,136) of RUBY DRAGONS. Down 25. NAFISAH vanquished KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. They tell me a bright light is
all it took. Amazing.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (50-25-3,217) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged SMITH (14-
1282) (95-148-4,243) of MIKES. Up! 26. GRANDPA RAT was savagely defeated by SMITH
in a 4 minute Challenge match. So much for reaching the Most Challenged Smith. But
perhaps he taught well. One can hope.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (53-23-0,229) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged WHERE'S MY
TOURNEY? (82-2893) (31-3-0,279) of THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! Up 50. BLIND GIRL was
overpowered by WHERE'S MY TOURNEY? in a 9 minute Challenge duel. Some days, it just
doesn't pay to get out of bed.
The tv challenge:
JACKSON (22-6649) (26-2-0,94) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS TV challenged SOLARIS (46-3759)
(35-88-0,62) of RUBY DRAGONS. Down 32. JACKSON devastated SOLARIS in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. Devastating indeed.
For the title:
VISION (26-1573) (123-53-4,268) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN LAMORAK
(11-4841) (69-91-1,221) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 47. VISION vanquished LUKARIAN
LAMORAK in a 1 minute uneven Challenge Title battle. We are glad to see Vision
continuing as the King's Sentinel (even if the identity or existence of the king is
debateable), because there's an outside chance that he might deign to give us a word
or two from his exalted position.
