Andor:
"I have never heard of this Korneth, or of Sengir," Crystal Fireblade said.
"Who is he that he should become king of the Andorian League? What do you know of
him?"
"Little more than you do. He is as ambitious as any man I've ever seen," Herlas
said. "Ruthless. As to his background, nothing. People who asked questions when he
first appeared... disappeared."
The woman glanced at him, and her eyes reminded him of her name: Fireblade.
"Did YOU try, magician?"
"Yes. I have never liked dealing with the unknown."
"And yet, here you are. Not disappeared." One hand went to the hilt of her
sword.
He looked away and shrugged. Hoped his face wasn't red with the memory of that.
"It was a close thing, I think. But he needed a magician he could control, and he...
decided he could control me."
"How?"
Now he was sure he was flushing, and it was all he could do not to hang his head
in shame. But he kept his voice steady. "Blackmail. I have done things in the past
that I would not like made public--"
"Why am I not surprised?"
"Worse things than just... indiscretions and bending of the rules. Things I
bitterly regret, now, when it's too late to not-do them. Things that, well, would
make it laughable for ME to be trying to do the right thing now, if it weren't for
the fact that no one else seems willing or able."
Fireblade's eyebrows rose. "And you know what is the 'right thing' to do now?"
"Gods, I wish! I'm hoping you've got a clue here, Lady. But at the least, I
will take Korneth with me, if I go down. I have already done what I can to insure
that."
She made a sharp gesture with one hand, to dismiss his statement. Or so he
thought. Until he noticed Korneth approaching. He went hot with embarrassment
again. How many years had it been since he'd made such an amateur's mistake as not
watching who was around him?
When Korneth reined his mount around to ride beside the magician, Herlas said,
"I'm not sure this parade was a good idea."
"You think not? But there were people beginning to wonder if the king was dead,
you know. It is necessary for a people to have confidence in the existence of its
leader."
Herlas wondered if the mocking undertone in Korneth's voice was intentional.
"It may give them a belief in his continued existence," he said, "but it hardly
inspires confidence in his fitness to rule."
"It just reminds them of how little has been done for the League as a whole in
the past few years," Fireblade added.
Korneth smiled. It was his smile that had first warned Herlas that this man
was... unusual. An old woman he had known when he was a child, a servant in his
family's house, had once described such a smile as 'someone who's sharing a joke with
seven devils, and so full of himself he doesn't believe anyone will catch him out'.
Did Korneth honestly think everyone was too stupid to figure out that he was up to no
good? Or did he just not care? Herlas heard Crystal Fireblade catch her breath
sharply beside him. She saw it, too, so he wasn't just imagining things.
"Perhaps it's just as well," Korneth said. "Let people once realize that the
king--who has no heir--is no longer fit to rule, and they will look with more favor
on a new dynasty." He raised a finger, and two men clad all in black, one in a
nobleman's silk and velvet, the other in the plainest of plebian garb, drew near.
Assassins. "A new dynasty that is prepared to maintain itself and rule with a firm
hand and a sharp blade. It will be like... the old days." He smiled again and
spurred his horse forward, but the assassins stayed behind.
Istoreth, Skaithvarn:
Whatever spell was on the city of Istoreth to make it perfect and beautiful did
not extend to the waterfront. It was simply a working waterfront. Prosperous, busy,
noisy with the shouts of venders and the cries of gulls, odorous with the stink of
ancient fish. The gladiators could see vessels that hailed from ports all around the
glacier-fed lake that was the Trier Sea. Gissanniah began to count them off in her
mind, dragonheaded ships from Snowbound, Karnhorn ships with two or three banks of
slave rowers, white-sailed Andorian ships, intricately painted hulls of the elves of
Ardivent, so many more, as a way to avoid looking at the blot of darkness anchored in
the center of the harbor.
It was the shape of a ship, as large as any other there, dead black so that it
drank any light that fell on it. A tall mast rose from the center but seemed too
slender to support sails against any earthly wind. No oars were visible. All the
normal ships appeared to be shrinking away from it toward the edges of the harbor.
"That is your task," the Istorene High Magician said, nodding toward the Black
Ship. The gladiators noted that he didn't look directly at it. "We want that gone
from our harbor, gone from our waters entirely. Make it so. If you can."
Senator Sedalia took a deep breath, paused for a moment, and then said, "It's a
challenge, no doubt about it. We'll do what we can."
Gissanniah just restrained herself from hitting him. What could they do? What
could gladiatorial skills or political savvy do against that blot on the Trier?
Sedalia turned to the mage. "Tell us what you know of this ship," he said.
"Since you sought demons rather than marines to rid yourself of it, I presume it's
magical in nature?"
"Magical, and of the darkest nature. Demonic, almost certainly. It comes from
Kurukar, where the accursed kaliv has opened the Darkest Door."
Sedalia nodded. "We have heard rumors and unconfirmed reports of the kaliv's
activities," he admitted. "We get little news out of Aradi now, but there is a hint
that a Chaos Lord there is considering the use of his special skills against
Kurukar."
"No!" The Istorene faced them squarely, which he had not done till now, and his
eyes were full of lightning while sparks leapt from the points of his mustache.
"There must be no unleashing of Chaos magic against the demonic forces, or the whole
world might be unmade!"

Andor:
Herlas glanced at the assassins out of the corner of his eye. The one in silk
had a slight smile; the one who looked like a peasant had no expression at all. Both
were staying close, right on the edge of earshot distance, as in "maybe they can hear
what we say, and maybe not." Ie he had been Korneth, the Zensovian would have picked
the assassins with the best hearing he could find and had them at just such a
distance. After all, they'd been trained to double as spies in the old days when the
kings of Andoria had protected their guild. Which meant no talking private with
Fireblade during the rest of this parade. And would the assassins keep with them
afterward? If Korneth's trust in him had fallen that far, Herlas figured it might be
time to put his ultimate contingency plan into motion.
He slid his glance toward the redhaired Lady Knight riding beside him. She
raised an eyebrow, then glanced toward the assassins and shook her head slightly.
What, did she think him such a fool that he would talk where he could be overheard?
He reined in annoyance. He'd been a big enough fool over this business already, why
might she not fear he would continue so? Why was it the only interesting women he'd
met could see that he was a fool and a blackguard? It was enough to depress a man.
The parade which had seemed endless looped back to the palace and ended. Lady
Knight Fireblade made another tiny, cryptic gesture and just... rode off! What did
she mean by it? Why did he care? He'd been playing out a lone hand so far, why did
he suddenly yearn for an ally? Herlas shook his head, hoping to shake out strange
notions, glanced at his assassin shadows, and rode toward the lodge on the edge of
the palace grounds where he was currently living.
***** *** ***** *** *****
Crystal Fireblade knocked on his door just after full dark. The front door, and
she knocked openly. Herlas looked past her gray-cloaked form into the rainy
darkness, then nodded. "Did anyone follow you?"
"I think not, though it's difficult to be sure." She shrugged out of the cloak
which had concealed her mail, the hood that had covered her flame-colored hair. "We
must take action of some kind, and soon," she said. "You know that." At his nod,
she went on, "Have you thought what kind of action? The lost king must be replaced,
and this Korneth of Sengir must be eliminated. But who the first, how the second?"
"Alonj of Fratsfa for the first," Herlas said. He indicated two chairs drawn up
to his fire, welcome on this wet night. The convincians will accept him as a
legitmate ruler, the Fratsfan will accept no one else. The Baron of Ardivent is too
far away, and nobody knows which way the Clanholds of the Aruaki will go these days,
they are too disorganized within themselves."
"Raltumas?"
"Not of immediate concern. The defection of Aradi has weakened them, and they
were never as coherent as other parts of the League."
"And what of Korneth? He will block any attempt to put Alonj--or anyone other
than himself--on the throne. It is my feeling that he will be hard to dispose of."
"Mine, too. There were those assassins early today, a rather pointed message, I
thought."
"Yes. Where are they now?" Fireblade glanced around as though she expected to
see them in some corner of the room.
Herlas smiled. "Posted in quite likely places, watching intently and seeing...
very little. Bats or whatever moves around at night. If those two are all Korneth
set to watching me, as I hope because he can't have many at his call yet, then we are
safe enough for now. Later... probably not."
Crystal Fireblade frowned. "Should we leave Andor, get to where he can't spy on
us, do you think?"
The magician got up and began pacing, tapping his fingers against each other
behind his back. After several minutes, he said, "No, I don't think so. True, we're
at risk of spying if we remain here, but once we move away from the center of the
action, we would need to find spies ourselves or lose touch with what's going on. My
feeling is that we need to know what is going on here, at least until we've dealt
with Korneth."
"I take your point, but what about Alonj of Fratsfa? Not only do we--or
someone--have to tell him that he must take over governance of the League, he must be
protected. Korneth is surely as able as we are to see that Alonj is the obvious
replacement for the vanished king."
Herlas barked a laugh. "Have you met Alonj's Adantri wife? I have, and I would
not want to be an assassin trying to get past her!"

REPORT FROM WITHIN THE TOWER
You do realize what all this "record low temperature" and "record precipitation
for the year to date" means, don't you? It means we're sliding into a new ice age.
Where is global warming when you need it? Not that I would ever imply that Ghea is a
globe, when the evidence is clear that it is not, but still, that's the current
catch-phrase.
But enough of that. Let's talk about the fights. Of which we had eighteen
today, and only one standby, which is excellent. Much better, for instance, than
Home Guard. Of those fights, eight were challenges, two of them tv challenges. All
from Kellumbo's Kids, that being the most actively managed team here in Andorak.
Kellumbo's Kids also did the most avoiding, and it was the Death Studs that they
avoided most. Blackrazor got the most challenges.
The fights:
BABY (43-2863) (26-39-2,37) of DARK SIDE fought LORIS KEY (26-4706) (20-31-1,49)
of GOLDEN CANYON. BABY was devastated by LORIS KEY in a 1 minute one-sided fight.
You shouldn't have asked her for baby-food, kiddo. Too bland for the Golden Canyon
Cooking Crew.
SOLARIS (46-3759) (35-90-0,71) of RUBY DRAGONS fought GO-FER (26-4444) (20-40-
2,58) of GOLDEN CANYON. SOLARIS was bested by GO-FER in a 2 minute brawl. Not what
anybody expected of Go-Fer, although it's true that his record isn't as bad as
Solaris's.
SALEM (82-42046) (12-6-0,42) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-23 fought FRY GUY (40-3655)
(24-12-0,65) of TACO GODS. SALEM was devastated by FRY GUY in an exciting 1 minute
uneven duel. Yes, well, some people just can't eat fried foods. Upsets their
innards. Probably nothing personal.
TORNADO CXCVI (60-5111) (19-28-0,180) of DEATH STUDS VII fought CONNOR MACLEOD
(11-5532) (66-81-0,128) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. TORNADO CXCVI was handily defeated by
CONNOR MACLEOD in a 1 minute uneven fight. Ah, that's got to hurt But experience
tells, or shows, or sometimes just handily defeats.
WOLVERINE (66-3871) (67-122-5,165) of X-FORCE fought LAWRENCE THE SOT (105-10)
(0-0-0,150) of Visiting Gourmets. WOLVERINE demolished LAWRENCE THE SOT in a popular
1 minute bloody mismatched match. Lawrence tells me that this is not what he was
expecting in Andorak. Ah, but you can't count on a blue-ribbon meal every time.
SMITH (14-1282) (96-149-4,190) of MIKES fought NIXIE SEASPRITE (11-4992) (67-80-
1,205) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. SMITH was overcome by NIXIE SEASPRITE in a 2 minute
contest. Yes, and Smith looked very funny snorking seawater out his nose, too. They
say it'll clear your sinuses. So will Snuffing grapefruit juice and garlic, but I
don't recommend it.
WARDUKE (11-5930) (58-71-3,200) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II fought HERO, HERO (68-446)
(21-37-0,186) of DIAMONDS & RUST. WARDUKE was demolished by HERO, HERO in a 1 minute
mismatched match. A classic and effective strategy: a Hero on the right, a Hero on
the left, and the wicked Duke between. Exit the Duke. Not that Warduke is
necessarily wicked, but that's what the traditional template calls for.
HUMMEL (14-1404) (93-150-6,188) of MIKES fought VAN HELSING (11-6338) (51-59-
1,159) of SCARLET KNIGHTS II. HUMMEL overpowered VAN HELSING in a popular 1 minute
one-sided melee. It amazes me sometimes that Van Helsing doesn't qualify as a full
fledged fossil (requires a minimum of two hundred regular-arena fights), because he
has that fossilized attitude. That whole, "I'm just marking time, I don't really
care what happens" attitude.
DEATH FOG (45-4017) (67-30-0,213) of SUPERIOR FORCES fought TALISMAN SHIELDGUARD
(11-4304) (81-114-0,190) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. DEATH FOG was vanquished by TALISMAN
SHIELDGUARD in a popular 1 minute one-sided duel. I could make a nasty joke about
this, one of the clerks actually fell off his stool laughing at it, but... nah. It'd
be rude, and I am nothing if not a model of courtesy and virtue, right?
SANDS (11-4123) (68-139-3,215) of SCARLET KNIGHTS fought WHERE'S MY TOURNEY?
(82-2893) (32-4-0,210) of THAT TOTALLY SUCKS! SANDS was unbelievably bested by
WHERE'S MY TOURNEY? in a popular 3 minute duel. Why is this hard to...? Ah, because
of the Fossil Factor. But some gladiators, despite a (relative) lack of regular
arena fights, are tough, and the rankings with which each started this fight should
have made it less than shocking. Oh, well.
The challenge matches:
NAFISAH (22-6612) (34-16-1,169) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged CLEMMIE (26-4630)
(28-39-1,159) of GOLDEN CANYON. Down 10. NAFISAH handily defeated CLEMMIE in a 1
minute uneven Challenge melee. Do you suppose there's any chance of getting some
more of that baklava?
TEEVELLA (82-24954) (21-5-1,151) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged KHORNE
SHADOWSPAWN (46-3809) (57-63-1,151) of RUBY DRAGONS. Straight across. Don't see
that often. TEEVELLA devastated KHORNE SHADOWSPAWN in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge
competition. And you know, when the two gladiators start out evenly matched in the
rankings, "one-sided" means the loser wasn't trying. Tcha.
BLIND GIRL (22-6041) (54-24-0,204) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged BLACKRAZOR (11-
4091) (67-142-2,204) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Straight across, again! This time against
the Most Challenged Blackrazor. BLIND GIRL unbelievably bested BLACKRAZOR in a 5
minute Challenge fight. Seeing is believing, and some things even the blind can see.
GRANDPA RAT (22-6549) (50-27-3,192) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged VAJRA VALMEJAR
(11-4928) (70-87-0,209) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Up 17. GRANDPA RAT was demolished by
VAJRA VALMEJAR in a 1 minute Challenge competition. For some people, "rat" is a hot
button. Looks like Vajra falls into that category.
SNAKE CHARMER (22-6169) (49-23-0,223) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged LUKARIAN
LAMORAK (11-4841) (70-92-1,219) of SCARLET KNIGHTS. Down 4. SNAKE CHARMER bested
LUKARIAN LAMORAK in a popular 3 minute Challenge fight. What our readership wants to
know is: Were there snakes involved in this? Much depends on the answer to this
question, a lot of gold, in fact. Some say yes, some say no.
The tv challenges, and, of course, our congratulations to those who have achieved
tourney victor status and are now making use of it:
DARNESHA (82-42015) (15-4-1,75) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS06-17 TV challenged GOLDERIE
(26-4657) (27-29-1,92) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up 17. DARNESHA vanquished GOLDERIE in a 1
minute uneven Challenge battle. I don't know what Golderie is thinking of right now,
but curry comes into my mind. HOT curry. Talk about blowing flame out the ears!
JACKSON (22-6649) (28-2-0,99) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS TV challenged SARINA (26-4220)
(26-35-1,106) of GOLDEN CANYON. Up 7. JACKSON devastated SARINA in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge fight. The orderlies tell me that Sarina was muttering about
venison stew as they helped her out of the arena. Well, it's coming onto the season.
For the title:
VISION (26-1573) (125-53-4,307) of KELLUMBO'S KIDS challenged GOKU (46-3655)
(94-75-2,237) of DRAGONBALL Z. Down 70. VISION outlasted GOKU in an action packed 9
minute bloody Challenge Title fight. NINE minutes? What took so long, Vision?
Congratulations.

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Darnesha -- I was thinking stuffed grape leaves. Either that, or stuffed tomatoes,
it depends on the color scheme of the meal as a whole, doesn't it? Rice to go with
either, but beyond that, well, I'm sitting with the cookbooks dreaming. I hate
having to choose, because there are so MANY good things, and no way I could eat them
all. Not if I still want to fit into my armor, anyway. -- Loris Key
Nafisah -- Baklava. At least, I think that's what I'm thinking of. Raisins, nuts,
honey, and flaky pastry. Whatever, it will be delicious. -- Clemmie
P.S. Actually, it's more Loris's kind of thing, just as the grape leaves or
tomatoes--or maybe stuffed peppers--are more in my line. But we thought we might be
getting too narrowly focused, so we're swapping around.
Connor Macleod -- I hate cooking for men, because they just stuff down anything and
the only comments are when they don't like it. So no way am I going to cook for you.
I'm going to make walnut and cream cheese sandwiches for the Ladies of the Isle
Gardening Club, and that's it. -- Sarina
P.S. Maybe lemon squares, too.
Baby -- I can't stand babies. Stay away from me! -- Go-Fer
Fry Guy -- I wish I could expect to get some fry breads, but this just isn't the
right culinary culture. Tood bad. -- Golderie
P.S. Although I suppose I could just... fry a tortilla in butter myself. With or
without cheese and cayenne. Hmm. Let me think about that.
Ardane -- Yes. -- Golderie
But holding a grudge is uncivilized. -- Ardane
